Dr. Padilla is very passionate and well educated about the topic. He cares about the success of all his students, and goes out of his way to help. The tests are pretty straight forward, and there are multiple extra credit options. Would definitely recommend this class and this professor.
One of the best professors I have ever had. Dr. Padilla makes class fun by always making jokes and using real life examples. Most classes are just him lecturing, but it doesn't get boring. He doesn't take attendance but if you go to class you will understand the material. Not too difficult- just go to class, take notes, go to reviews, and study.
He is seriously one of the funniest teachers ever, and super nice. There is almost never homework except for the 3 exams we have, and one paper at the end of the year. The tests are pretty hard so just make sure you study a lot and you will be fine. He doesn't check attendance but you miss a lot if you don't go to the lectures. Give extra credit
He is an AMAZING professor. Very passionate about his studies. Show up to class and study you'll do great. I HIGHLY suggest taking his class
Best professor I've ever had! Lecture heavy but he's so funny it's enjoyable. Truly teaches out of love! I never opened the book and got an A in the class.
My favorite professor at UNR, absolutely amazing.
Many resources to help you get an A. A lot of extra credit. Was funny and easy to understand during lectures.
Super funny, interesting, caring, everything you'd want a professor to be. Classes are helpful for the test, and the lectures never get boring. He is very understanding and over all super enjoyable.
He was a really funny guy and made his lectures very interesting. He applied it all back to the Reno area, which made it more real. His presentations are based off the textbook, but still make sure to read it because he doesn't always present every bit of information. He really made me see how much socioeconomic class impacts an individual.
Dr. Padilla is quite a character, but in the best way possible. He's very flexible with helping out any students that need it, and his lectures never got boring. There are three midterms in the class, and no cumulative final. You will need to put in a lot of work for the 6 page paper, but if an honest effort is put forth, it will be easy. TAKE HIM!
My all time favorite professor at UNR. Take this class!!! Super easy, i would review for tests for about an hour the day before and get an A. Only one paper... Dont bother getting the book. I bought it and didn't open it once.
This man definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat. He's very interactive with his lectures and makes learning the material fun. I would definetly retake any course I could by him. He's a real gem. He's willing to go above and beyond for his students. He doesn't want them to be unheard or misunderstood. He encourages communication!
I wish I didn't take a 7:30 class, but if it was with anyone, I'm glad it was with him. Great professor and I learned a lot. Taking his class is worth it.
Dr. Padilla is the best. He seriously makes going to class to much fun. It is one of those classes that even though attendance isn't mandatory, his lectures are full everyday. He makes you want to be there and is constantly keeping you on your toes. He is very open and personal with you as well. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Dr. Padilla is my favorite professor. He makes the class so interesting with all of his jokes and outgoing personality even at 7:30 in the morning. He is super understanding if you miss something as long as you are honest, have a good excuse, and let him know in a timely manner. Everyone who can should take him!
Fun class, if you attend lecture and listen/take notes you wont have to read the textbook at all.
Professor Padilla was honestly an outstanding professor. His exams are very easy and simple as long as you take down the lecture notes and skim over the chapters in the textbook. Attendance is not mandatory whatsoever but you need to go in order to get the notes needed for exams since he doesn't post any of the lectures online.
Josh was probably one of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures cover everything that is on the test so it's best if you show up to take notes. If you show up it's a solid A or B. He is funny and very passionate about sociology!
He will help you if only you just ask
He has an amazing professor. The only difficult assignment the entire semester was the paper at the very end, but other than that it wasn't bad at all. Very funny and a great guy.
Dr. Padilla is by far the best instructor I have every had. He is very engaged with the students, adds great videos to the lectures to make you interested and keep you awake. The test are super easy as long as you go to class, paper was super fun to write. All in all I wish I could have him teach me again!
Dr. Padilla was the funniest and most caring professor I have ever encountered. His exams were low stress and super easy because he covers everything in lecture. The paper was the most difficult part and it was not bad at all! He also gave out extra credit towards the end and it made getting an A so much easier!
Hands off, best professor at UNR. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to take his class. Tests were easy as long as you went to lecture. Extra credit was offered. Lectures are so entertaining which is unheard of in college courses. You know what is expected of you from the very beginning. Do yourself a favor and take his class!!!!
Professor Padilla is an amazing professor! His lectures are full of knowledge but he also makes them engaging with his sense of humor. His exams are mostly lecture based so as long as you come to class you will pass. Has a genuine interest in making sure students are successful and is always willing to help. Amazing instructor!
He was a really good professor! He never once bored you in class, he was really funny. He offered plenty of opportunities for extra credit but beware of the Analytical paper! They grade it harshly but fairly. Exams are just terms and graph statistics from lecture!
Dr. Padilla is a great professor! He cares about his students and is passionate about sociology.
He is such a great professor. Everything is made very clear whether it be content on the test or what he's looking for out of students. The tests are an easy A if you show up, take notes, & read from the textbook every once in awhile. Not to mention he's SUPER funny. Never got bored even though it was an 8am. I really recommend him.
Easy class. Never even opened my textbook so save yourself the money. Just show up to lecture and you'll be set for the tests. All the answers for the tests are on his lectures. The only semi-difficult thing was the analytical paper but he's more than willing to help if you ask for assistance. Super Funny and engaging for a 7:30 AM class!
Josh was very hilarious.. best teacher I've had! He makes class fun and you get lots of extra credit options too. Take his class! You'll most likely get an A and have fun too
Dr. Padilla is honestly the best professor I had freshmen year! For being a 7:30am class, time went by quick and he usually ended early. He is very energetic and makes class fun with his jokes and life examples. Have any questions? Dont be afraid to ask him or his TA, he is willing to help and clarify all questions!
He's probably my favorite professor by far. He does an amazing job at engaging students in his lectures, even though it's at 7:30 am. The paper honestly isn't that difficult as long as you've been going to lectures. He's very approachable and gives good feedback when asked. I'd definitely take his class again, even if it was another 7 am lecture!
Padilla was awesome he is so funny and makes his lectures easy to understand. The textbook is required, but you could honestly do without it. Attendance is not required but I would recommend you go since he has certain in class assignments that count as extra credit.
Padilla's lectures were always funny and engaging. If you miss class he is more than willing to send you the powerpoint from that class. Tests were easy as long as you payed attention to the lectures.
He truly is the type of professor that really makes his class worth the money. He is so knowledgeable and knows how to make is lecture flow. He always makes perfect sense and his lectures are always interesting even at 7:30 in the morning. I never missed a day of class and is tests where on what he taught in class. He is a very cool guy!
He's very strict on cell phones during class. Tests are based on the material in the lecture slides so it's best to show up to class (can always email & he'll send slides). There are about 2 in-class assignments that are worth a lot of points-all you have to do is show up. Always a review before tests (poor grade retake test up to 70%) cool guy.
Amazing professor! Padilla is very knowledgeable about sociology and wants students to learn it well. He is hilarious and made getting up for the 8 am class bearable. The only readings were the textbook chapter readings.
Hands down my favourite professor this semester. His lectures are fun to go to and made me want to go to class. He gives random extra credit opportunities and his tests are very manageable. He's understanding and works with you if you have any issues. The only negative is his toughly graded analytical paper! Don't slack off on it and you'll do fine
An amazing professor. Dr. Padilla is kind, laid-back, and hilarious. Hes the only teacher I know who could make it worth it to go to a 7:30 AM class. Attendance isnt mandatory, and theres a clear schedule with no surprises. Exams and assignments are easy if youve read the textbook. He truly cares about his students and his field; a great class.
Only gotta go to class sometimes
Professor Padilla is my favorite professor I've ever had. He is very understanding of life outside of his class, which makes it easy to get a good grade in his class. He doesn't require attendance, but his lectures are so interesting and funny that I actually wanted to go. Definitely take his class!
Professor Padilla is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is very passionate about the subject, and makes it easy to understand. You can pass with very little work and you only have to come to class 5 times, for in class "assignments," and you are told the dates of these assignments at the beginning of the semester.
Padilla is one of my favorite professors! He makes SOC easy and is always making jokes and making you laugh during EVERY lecture. He is caring and is willing to work with you if something goes wrong. You have some days for in-class assignments, but he gives you a schedule, so you know what days. I HIGHLY recommend taking his class.
Professor Padilla was an amazing sociology teacher. If you're here looking for a SOC101 professor than Padilla is your man. He is a bit eccentric but it makes for an engaging class. He posts lecture notes which is all you really need for the tests and you won't need a book so I suggest not buying one. Overall a really easy class.
Attendance isn't mandatory except for a few days but those are on the syllabus. There are extra credit points on random days so I recommend showing up. Exams are super straightforward and basically just reflect the lecture notes. The textbook is useful, especially for the research paper but other than that, you'll be fine without it. No phones.
THE MOST AMAZING PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! Not only is he hilarious but honestly he cares about you as a student and really wants you to pass. His tests are straight forward and come exactly from his lectures, which he will send you if you miss them. One paper which was graded hard but worth it. Totally worth taking him at 7:30 am!
Dr. Padilla is a great professor. I always enjoyed coming to lecture just because his personality is so infectious. He's a great guy and as long as you read the ppt. before the test, you'll get a good grade. There is one big long essay you have to do and he actually grades really hard on that, so you have to do well on the tests to get an A overall
Dr. Padilla is an amazing sociology teacher. He is passionate and loves to teach, which makes going to class interesting and engaging. It is an easy class, as the tests reflect the lecture notes directly. Do well on the tests because there is one big research paper that is graded harshly, but otherwise, it's an easy A. Highly recommend his class.
3 exams buy scantrons, n a paper which killed my grade. He grades it harshly. Read the book, or go to class only on the review days. He never posts the powerpoints u gotta email him or the TA. He hates Phones. He counts u late even if u show up 10 mins b4 class starts n leave to restroom n comeback on time. yet he's always late to lecture.
Professor Padilla was a great professor. Made it very easy to show up to an 8 AM class. There were three tests including the final and there was one big paper that he grades harshly. Attendance is not mandatory but he does give extra credit points at random so I would recommend you go as often as possible. Overall a very easy class.
I took Professor Padilla at 7:30am and he always managed to keep the class awake because of his enthusiasm! His lectures were always interesting, he provides outlines of his lecture that way you're not always writing. He does offer extra credit and his test are multiple choice, so as long as you study what he says you are good to go!
Padilla is very engaging and he definitely wakes you up whether you have the class early in the morning or late afternoon. His exams are easy A's but the essay will probably kill your grade in the end. It all depends on how harsh your TA is. I ended with an A- in the class but he was very willing to round up to an A.
He is a great professor and made the class really engaging with his stories. His tests were easy to pass as long as you paid attention in class. The assignments he gives were easy too and were often about watching a video and answering questions. Be careful with the essay at the end, it's graded harshly.
This guy is great - he's funny and entertaining, and pretty lenient with grading. He doesn't curve tests, but the tests are so easy and open note so it doesn't really matter. The book isn't really mandatory because he doesn't assign anything out of it and if you attend his lectures he teaches the material very well. Super cool class!
The only reason I give him a four and not a five is because he doesn't record lectures but other than that he's super chill but he is a tough grader on the paper, so don't slack on that. I would say this class is textbook heavy so make sure you get the book, you actually need it.
this guy is unorganized. i took this class during covid times and it was by far the lest optimized class i took. the actual material is easy and the tests are easy. read a book. the main issue, the term paper the average was 64 percent, so expect an 8 % drop on average to your grade also you wont get the grade till after the class is over.
Professor Padilla was an exceptional professor, the exams are open note but you don't need anything other than the notes given in lecture. He also gives lots of extra credit opportunities for attending lectures. Just make sure to do good on the essay, he grades it harshly. Overall one of the best teachers I've had this year.
Take Professor Padilla, you will not be disappointed. Showed up to every lecture, took notes, even got a few extra credit. All exams are open note, super easy if you show up to lectures. The five assignments are also easy if you show up to class. Research Paper was easy to do, got an A by GOING TO CLASS. Literally all you need: SHOW UP, EASY A.
Great professor who actually cares about his students. As long as you go to the lectures and pay attention, you should be able to get an A easily.
Dr. Padilla is unlike and teacher I've ever had. Took his class at 7:30 AM and going to his class did no bother me at all. He's very understanding of everyones situation as long as you communicate with him. Test are fairly easy as long as you show up to class. So much extra credit opportunities, it's impossible to not pass the course.
Dr. Padilla was fun and caring from the first day. He is accommodating and does everything in his power to help his students succeed. Padilla is transparent with the material you are being tested on, and even offers extra credit for just showing up to class. As long as you show up once in a while, and are consistent with homework you will pass.
Dr. Padilla is a great professor. All of his lectures contain what you need for the 3 exams he gives throughout the semester. He also assigns a textbook and says it is a must have for the class. I didnt use it once, dont purchase a textbook until you really need one. Otherwise, his curriculum is engaging and interesting.
All I can say is wow! Padilla is an amazing professor. He makes his class so interesting, however he is a very tough grader. His tests are very difficult, and you have to work for a passing grade in his class. He gave me a 2 day extension on an essay we had all semester to do. He is also hilarious and is always cracking jokes about his wife. 10/10
Joshua Padilla’s lectures were very engaging although pretty decentralized. The class is an easy A. Test questions can be confusing and are not proofread for spelling and grammar. Pray that you don’t have any reason to interact with him personally. Respectfully, he is not a nice person.
Very straightforward class, you attend class and take notes then take an exam after a few chapters, the test are pretty easy. He makes a 7am class more entertaining because of how much enthusiasm he has in the morning. The hardest assignment is a 7-10 page paper but if you are good at writing you will be fine.
Absolutely amazing professor, he's very funny and keeps the lectures really entertaining. The course overall is super easy, just show up to class and when it comes to the exams just study a little and you'll pass. He made sociology super fun, and definitely recommend him as a professor.
Great professor. Hilarious guy who is very relatable. His lectures were really enjoyable and you really would learn a lot. Padilla makes every thing super interesting and puts into perspective of why its good to know these things. Get ready for lots of yelling and way too many off topic stories that are absolutely phenomenal. Dont bring up cyclists
Dr. Padilla is amazing. He makes lectures really interesting and is extremely flexible when it comes to assignments. His extra credit provides a bunch of room for improvement and he is very clear on what is on the tests.
Padilla was amazing, early class at 7:30 but his lectures are super worth going to, really loved this class, grading of the paper was really harsh, even worse than i thought from previous reviews, so be ready for it by going to lecture and doing well on the tests
He is very entertaining and the class is easy
loved this class! his lectures are really entertaining but if you don't go to class (my lectures were at 7:30 in the morning) he always posts the slides online. you really don't need the textbook, about 95% of what's on his tests are in his lecture slides, and the assignments are easy to get 100s on as long as you turn them in and follow directions
He is good, just a lot of content
Padilla is a really engaging, fun professor. He made 7:30 AM classes fun if you can believe it or not. The class was fairly easy and each exam is based on memorization. He also offers a few points of extra credit.
I LOVED coming to his lectures because he's an entertaining and understanding professor! Attendance is not mandatory at all (just show up for the exams and final). Just be wary of the 7-10 page analytical paper (+ it was the only time I really opened the textbook). The extra credits give a lot of cushion! Just don't mention cyclists...
Despite it being my earliest class, I always looked forward to attending these lectures! I felt very engaged with various videos and humor within his teaching. I highly recommend attending classes because the live descriptions really help! Watch out for the analytical paper though, that was the most difficult assignment.
Loved his class and the content! Almost made me a sociology major. Like how others mentioned, watch out for the analytical paper as it was the most difficult assignment. Also, he offers a lot of extra credit that provides a good cushion when final grades are being put in.
I love this professor, he is very fun and I love his lectures. He is an easy grader. You will need to get a textbook and buy your own scantrons for the texts. But overall amazing class and would definitely take again.
Took his 7:30 am class and he was understanding about time and had a lot of energy for being up that early. There are a couple class assignments, 3 exams (the final isn't cumulative - mainly about definitions), 1 7-10 page paper, 4 extra credit opportunities, and there is a textbook required but I did just fine without reading it extensively.
Professor Padilla is AMAZING. I loved attending his lectures even at 8 AM, and he made me enjoy sociology. The tests are exactly what he teaches in lectures, and he gives multiple extra credit opportunities to help with your grade. He grades the paper fairly harshly at the end, but it is good, valid feedback that will help in the future.
Padilla is amazing. He's very understanding that many won't show up for classes so he really tries to reward those who do (extra credit, exam reviews, lecture-based exams). He does require a textbook, but in all honesty, pay attention in class and you shouldn't need to rely on the book too much. Lectures are always engaging and PPTs are posted
Super funny and makes the class super fun!
Keeps the class interesting, and is very clear on what he wants for each assignment. Gives lots of tips and tricks for exams and assignments during lectures, so I definitely recommend attending. He's really funny and will definitely make fun of the people that are distracting.
Padilla's a great morning class option because he makes class interesting and will keep you awake. His assignments are straightforward and will go over what is going to be on each test. Making up notes on missed class is easy because he posts everything. Overall a fun guy who knows what he's talking about.
Padilla is very passionate about the subject and is definitely a character! 3 exams and 1 7-10 page paper however he lets you send it to him early so you can get feedback. Also does lots of extra credit if you go to lectures.
Professor Padilla is such a great professor and he really care about sociology which reflects on his teaching. There are three tests including the final, which are 50 questions each and is about the terms, readings, and videos. I am not very good at studying so that is what really tanked my grade but I really enjoyed the class.
Dr. Padilla is hilarious and understanding, an amazing professor! He def made an 8 am lecture worth going to, also there was extra credit opportunities if you did go to class. The class was great, will def take another class with Padilla!
Very engaging and enjoyable; his assignments are pretty simple. There's only three exams and one paper, although the paper is graded harshly and could potentially drop your grade quite a bit; otherwise, the class is not hard. He always posts the study guide with what should be expected on the exams too.
he was super understanding and kind and all his lectures were classes to look forward to
I took this class in Fall 2023, I'd say one of my favorite classes I've ever been in. I highly recommend people to take Sociology 101 with him. His class is no pushover either. As long as you show up to the lectures, read the textbook, do the assignments, and prepare for the exams, you will pass with an A.
The actual best. Took this class at 730 am and did not bother me at all to attend. So funny and super understanding. So much extra credit opportunity can literally get extra credit on tests just for showing up to lecture.
If you have the opportunity to take Padilla's class… DO IT! I had him at 7:30am and always looked forward to his lectures. 6 homework assignments total, 1 paper, 3 exams, no final, and tons of EC offered. He had us get a textbook but if you attend lectures, which I highly recommend, there is no need to get the book, he covers everything.
Makes lectures interesting with his examples/stories but sometimes it does feel like he "overshares" personal details in his life. Four easy extra credit opportunities. On the final day of lectures, he ended by saying "Thank you for letting me be your professor." to the class, and that really showed why I think he's such a humble and caring person.
Professor Padilla is nice and I didn't mind the 7:30 am class, He has very strong political views that he shares and comes off as judgmental if you disagree. Research paper graded very tough. He does offer extra credit opportunities. I feel strongly I should've gotten an A in this class and due to the low grade on the paper it killed that chance.
This man is easily the best professor I've had in my life. He is so funny, super understanding, and his lectures are incredibly engaging, making the material easily digestible. TBH I did not buy the book and I can't name a single instance where I needed it. So many extra credit opportunities and exams are fairly easy.
Lots of extra credit in this class. No need to show up for lecture, exams are basically all definitions from posted slides. He is super nice and will review your essay before submission. Bad reviews about the essay are from illiterate people because it's truly not even that hard.
Padilla is a lovely person and you can tell he's passionate about what he does. 3 exams, 1 paper, and a fair amount of homework. He's understanding, offers lots of VERY easy extra credit & his tests are fairly simple as long as you read the lecture slides. The only thing he grades harshly on is the paper, but he will guide you through every step!
Awesome prof take him
Profesor Padilla was honestly one of my favorite teachers I've had here at UNR. I looked forward to his lectures and he has some really funny stories. I highly recommend taking his class!
He rounded my grade up because he knows i go to every lecture even tho its not mandatory. I only did bad on the final paper (got a 60%) which brought my A to a B. He graded the essay hard but the tests are easy. And it's only one essay. Amazing study guides. I didn't even pay attention in class got As on exams, study guide carried.
Attendance not mandatory, extra credit is given randomly throughout the lecture slides which he posts in case you miss class. No final, three exams each 100 points and provides good study guides. One essay due and gives a couple writing assignments that take no more than an hour. Very understandable.
Lecture heavy but he did a great job at giving a real life examples that relate to the content. Attendance not mandatory but he gives random extra credit for showing up to class. Easy assignments but there is an 8 page research paper at the end of the semester.
Super easy and awesome class. Attendance was not mandatory, but the class was so fun that I went anyway. You only need the textbook for the homework, and pretty much everything on the exams is covered in the reviews he posts.
EC opps are legit so easy (so do them lol it can save ur grade). I am generally a good writer but that research paper was graded REALLY tough (fair tho) so for the love of God, take it seriously. He is easy going and attendance isn't mandatory but it's better just to go to class imo bc you wont have to study a bunch bc he's awesome at teaching.
Very hilarious dude. It's very easy to get a high grade as tests are easy. He has a writing project near the end of the semester worth a hefty portion. The instructions are unclear due to his terrible writing skills and his feedback is nearly incoherent. Somehow, the mean was a 60% in a Soc 101 class. Whiplash of a class. Decent overall.
