Brother Sears is a great professor to take Book of Mormon 121 from. He is very clear on what will be on tests and gives you the questions he will ask on the study guide and in the daily reading quizzes. It was a very easy class if you do the homework and make sure you use the study guides for the test. He's really fun and knows a lot.
He will answer every question you ever had about the Book of Mormon. I learned so much and was excited for the great lectures. He cares about students and is great with answering questions, no matter how hard they may be. Very organized, you know exactly what is expected and what will be on the tests and quizzes. Easy A if you study.
SOLID religion professor! His class discussions are actually interesting and he's very clear about what will be on tests. There are daily reading quizzes, but he provides study guides for those questions. He's also pretty funny sometimes. He's a bit of a new professor, but that makes him sensitive to students' needs, which is way nice!
Bro. Sears was a good professor and wants his students to succeed! He gives study guides for the tests, which usually have lots of information but it's not too hard. He's kinda quirky but that makes class interesting! You have a big paper at the end of the semester but he can help you with it. Easy class, but you still learn interesting stuff.
Just what you want for religion. Loved learning what he had to teach. Easy reading quiz every class (he gives you the questions to study for). 5 tests (made of reading questions and stuff from class. Everything is on the study guide.) 1 paper at the end of class wasn't too bad and a few other easy assignments. Very forgiving grader too.
Professor Sears is hands down my favorite religion professor at BYU! His lectures are amazing and you can really tell he cares about each of his students. He has an incredible amount of doctrinal and historical knowledge. Just memorize the questions on the quizzes you will ace the tests. I would take this class again and again if I could!
Brother Sears is an amazing religion professor! I learned SO much from him in class and for the first time at BYU, felt like I was gaining something from a religion class. Super easy class that challenges your thinking and helps expand your knowledge of the BOM. 12/10 would recommend.
Best Religion Teacher! He is young so he understands us. No final during finals week. Quick quizzes and reading every class. Posts Quiz questions before taking them online. Tests are from Quiz Questions. Interesting Lectures. Before I've had professors read from manuals and he actually makes the course interesting. Take any class from him!
This guy is amazing. You can tell throughout his class the incredible amount of time he puts into making your experience the best. You learn twice as much as the effort you actually put in to learn it. He teaches you amazing things in the classroom and through his assignments. If you want to learn the story of the Book of Mormon simply, take him!
Brother Sears is incredibly knowledgeable about the scriptures and the Book of Mormon. I have learned more in that class about the Book of Mormon than any other class or Sunday school, and he makes it fun and easy! Study the reading questions for the tests and you'll get an A. It's a super fun class by an amazing professor! Take from Bro Sears!!!
Brother Sears is an amazing teacher. His Lectures are SUPER interesting and are about things college students care about. He has a short reading quiz online due before each class, which he gives us the questions before. Has a Test on each of the 4 gospels and NO FINAL. Those Tests are made from the quizzes so you have all the test questions before.
I loved Brother Sears! He is a relatively new professor (I had him his second semester). but I honestly wouldn't have known that if he hadn't stated that the first day. The quizzes are straight forward, he is clear about what you will be tested on, and I felt like all of the assignments had a purpose. I learned a lot! Definitely take him if you can
He is a great religion professor with a strong testimony he isnt happy to share. Focuses on historical details so tests can be hard if you dont have a good memory or are unfamiliar with the scriptures.
Oh my goodness I love Brother Sears. I felt the spirit every time I was in his class and just wow. His lectures are so amazing and I learned something new every single day. This class was also VERY easy so that you can get a lot out of it! Reading quizzes, easy exams with a clear study guide, and a few small exercises. TAKE FROM HIM!!!
Brother Sears is great. He cares about the students, and teaches in a way that's really relatable and engaging. Not a ton of homework, but enough to keep you learning.
I normally don't write reviews on here but I had to because Brother Sears is amazing. He really knows his stuff and is able to answer any question thrown at him by students, but somehow maintains the spirit in every single class. The homework is totally reasonable and the tests aren't too difficult - TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM!
Helped me outside class a ton and helped get my grade good. Quality guy that cares about his students
LOVE HIM. He gets students so his workload and grading is easy. Def. quirky but I think hes hilarious. He has like a PhD in OT so he can answer any random question you ask. He has weekly online exercises that are the BEST- probably could get away w/ not actually reading them but if you do theyre amazing. Awesome class, not too hard for religion
I really enjoyed taking this class from brother Sears! I've heard nightmares about BYU religion classes so I was nervous taking this class but it wasn't bad at all! He really knows his stuff and you can tell he cares about students. I would definitely recommend taking his class!!
This is one of my favorite classes I've taken at BYU. Absolutely would take again.
If you are taking a religion class, take it from Bro. Sears! He is hands down one of the best religion profs at BYU. He makes his class very impactful and spiritual, without making it overwhelming and stressful on your grades. Just attend the lectures and do the reading questions and you will be fine. I learned a lot about the BOM. Spiritual. 11/10
Absolutely loved Brother Sears! Genuinely caring guy. Only had 3 assignments per week and half the midterm questions are exactly from the homework and half from the lectures which are summarized in his study guides. So as long as you do the homework and show up to class it's an easy A.
AMAZING. Cannot emphasize enough how great he was. He used his knowledge of the Old Testament to explain cultural and literary insights in the Book of Mormon, plus he was able to explain the infamous Isaiah chapters in a clear and inspiring way. He is caring and very knowledgable. I loved going to this class! You will learn so much!
Brother Sears is awesome. Great teacher. He wants you to get a good grade. Reading quizzes before every class. The tests are the reading question, and a study guide he helps you fill in. If you put in a little work you will get an A.
BROTHER SEARS IS AMAZING!!!! He genuinely cares about his students. We had one class where we just talked about mental health! He knows so much about the scriptures. I've read the Book of Mormon lots of times, but this is the first time I felt like I actually understood it. During his class, it was like- "It all makes sense now!"
Brother Sears had very clear grading criteria, and he gave very straightforward exams. The homework questions reflected the exams, so if you do the reading you'll do great on the exams. Very enlightening, insightful, non-stressful religion class. Bro. Sears changed the way I view the scriptures.
OK, if you came to this page wondering whether to take this class, the average score should answer your question! Professor Sears is probably literally the best religion professor at BYU, and no one talks about him! None of his work is busy work--you have to do it but it is so helpful and inspirational! He cares and plans class FOR the students!!!!
Brother Sears is awesome. Extremely insightful, and I learned way more than I expected. His lectures were the perfect combination of spiritual and scholarly, and the class way more focused on learning than doing a ton of homework.
Brother Sears is a great teacher and is so knowledgable. This wasn't the easiest religion class I've ever taken, but I learned so much from him! Beware, he does make you memorize three scriptures one of which is lengthy. He is so kind and really cares about his students!
Professor Sears is AMAZING!! I truely learned so much from his class and he prepares his students very well for the exams. The spirit was present and strong every single class which was very special because that doesnt happen in all religion classes. He was my favorite BYU professor and I highly reccomend taking his class!
Prof. Sears is a great guy. He knows his stuff for sure and is very willing to work with his students according to their needs. Really not a difficult class if you do the reading and the homework questions. He uses the homework questions on tests word for word so if you do the homework you'll get a good grade on the test for sure.
One of the nicest guys ever, and really cares about his students. I loved how he taught the 4 Gospels; he focuses on the doctrine, but he also teaches the background and history so we understand where it came from. He's always willing to answer questions and listen. He does take attendance everyday. *I finished this class online due to Covid19
Fantastic teacher! Very engaging. He would even bring in little artifacts or replicas to let us see frequently. Very clear expectations and we always knew what would be on the tests. You just have to make sure to study. He is always willing to meet after class to clarify things. *Finished online bc of COVID-19
Take this from Sears! Though a bit boring on occasion, he is very inspirational and very caring about his students and the content. Sears helps us really get a gauge for what's happening, and where, in the Book of Mormon through a geographical approach as well as through his knowledge of ancient writings. Very doable and worthwhile. 10/10
Brother Sears is a great teacher who knows a lot about every topic he teaches. I do disagree, however, with those saying that all of the exam questions are from previous quizzes. He throws a lot of curveballs and the exams can be very difficult.
He announces exams the day before you are supposed to take them, giving no time to prepare. There were also many assignments or lectures where we were talking solely on the New/Old Testament, instead of the Book of Mormon. (which is the class Im taking) We focused on a lot of textbook reading and it was hard to ever feel the spirit in this class.
He is awesome!! Always willing to work with you. He is very kind and wants the best for his students. The class is one you have to work for but it's all worth it! I would definitely recommend taking a class with him because I learned so much!!
Heavier focus on the Isaiah chapters but instead of being boring, learning these stories has been super enlightening! Not much homework, not super test heavy. Brother Sears is enthusiastic and caring; I have learned so much better HOW to study the B of Mormon, and I've gained a deeper understanding and appreciation for this book. TAKE HIS CLASS! :)
I loved taking Book of Mormon from Brother Sears! He's very caring, taking significant time to go over questions and concerns of students. He also designs his lectures around what he feels a student might need while teaching what you need to know for exams. You will learn and think a lot without worrying about your grade.
A great professor who cares about his students and is super knowledgeable on this subject. Even though I had a really rough semester and couldnt put my all into the class, I still passed. Clear expectations and the assignments dont feel like busywork, unlike many other religion classes Ive had. Cool guy, cool class.
He is really good at helping you know exactly what to study for the tests and quizzes and is really chill. There are quite a few tests, but none of them are too hard. The only thing I'd say is to make sure you write down when each of the exams are at the beginning of the semester, but he's been my favorite religion professor by far.
Brother Sears is the BEST! He truly wants his students to succeed, and he's super straightforward about what material will be on the test. I love how his class is easy enough that I'm able to have a spiritual experience in the class instead of just stressing out about the workload or difficulty of the tests! He never assigns busywork!
Brother Sears is a fantastic person which is evident in his teaching. I have loved his integration of the Old Testament and Book of Mormon in this class. Brother Sears is very caring and obviously wants each of his students to succeed. His class has been enriching and motivating. He is very detail-oriented, knowledgeable, and dedicated.
One of the best professors for NT! He uses a study bible in his class which makes the readings much more clear. Every week you have readings, an easy reading quiz (that makes up your exam questions), and a simple online assignment. There are four exams and no finals. He caters the class to your questions and is awesome!!
Bro Sears is everything you want in a professor - he teaches from the scriptures, the assignments are meaningful but not crazy hard or complicated, and the lectures are uplifting and informative. Just do the homework and attend class and you'll be 100% fine. Minimal studying, just doing the weekly stuff. He is really relatable and inclusive too.
No freebies (extra credit, dropped exams, etc) Wont lose points for no reason. Very clear expectations. Won't leave you guessing on what you need to know for exams. Class structure gets into predictable comfortable rhythm. Nothing is too hard, but just do it all and you will have a good grade.
Everything he has done has built me and my classmates and made us better people. He often took time to make the scriptures make sense without it being an hour-long lecture about some random part of the culture. He made everything applicable to us as his students and truly is the reason people like me want to be at BYU. I will be taking him again :)
This is one of the more inclusive religion classes I've taken (despite COVID) and I would definitely recommend Sears. The class isn't too hard and the lectures are interesting. Exams always felt like they came out of nowhere but they aren't too bad as long as you pay attention in class. The reviews before the tests are super useful too.
Professor Sears is AMAZING!! He's kind, funny, and genuinely wants all of his students to succeed. He includes questions from the reading checks on his tests, so you already know what's coming. If you're taking this class, take it from him! He is INCREDIBLE!
Overall, Brother Sears is a great guy and although nerdy, he really knows his stuff and engages the class. Attendance is mandatory; however, I am not one who likes to read out loud and he would often have everyone read row by row, so I would end up dipping out early. Exams are really easy!
Pretty easy class for the Book of Mormon requirement. Two reading quizzes a week that are easy if you fill out the reading questions beforehand. Tests weren't too difficult if you keep up on the reading and go to class. Once a week you have to complete an exegetical exercise which is pretty straight forward as well.
Everything was pretty straightforward, but the tests covered a lot of material so be ready to put a good amount of time in if you want an a on the tests. Besides that, decent class although I might look for a different professor if I was going to take it again.
Possibly my favorite professor I've had, regardless of discipline. I read the Book of Mormon (and my other scriptures) in a completely different way and feel like I understand them a lot better from an academic perspective. This class was stellar missionary preparation. He really knows his stuff, and the class is legitimately college-level learning
I learned so much from Bro. Sears this semester. Might very well by my favorite prof I've ever had. My outlook on so much about the scriptures was changed, especially with understanding textual and translational history of the New Testament. His classes are both very spiritual and more academic than any other religion class I've taken. 10/10.
THE IDEAL RELIGION PROFESSOR. Spiritually uplifting, inclusive of people of all backgrounds, fun, passionate, and inspirational. Class isn't too hard but you should take him simply because he is incredibly knowledgeable about the bible. If you want a class that can shape your perspective of the gospel THIS IS IT.
Brother Sears perfectly balances the spirit with academia. He goes on Rate My Professor to figure out what to avoid and adjusts accordingly. He also honors UAC accommodations which is a rarity amongst Religion Professors. He's the only professor I've willingly signed up for twice.
Such a great professor! He is so kind and funny. I took it from him blended. The information he gave was stuff normally not talked about in studying the Book of Mormon, which was great! There are lots of exams but they are very easy and that allows them to each have less of an impact on your grade. He gives the reading quiz questions beforehand.
Great professor! He is open-minded and definitely makes you feel safe and respected in his class. His lectures are easy to follow and the weekly assignments/reading is decently easy. Tests are not hard. Would totally take his class again! He understands that not everyone is LDS/has the same knowledge of the scriptures, so he accommodates to that.
Just amazing at explaining the scriptures. The exams are kinda difficult but it is worth it. Other than exams nothing else is hard. He is really good at explaining the book of Isaiah.
Bro. Sears was a favorite this semester. I took so much out of his lectures and assignments that they didn't really feel like work. If you're looking for a religion teacher that's open-minded and considerate of all situations, this is your guy. Seriously changed my life and really helped grow my testimony. Take this class!
For a Book of Mormon class it should have been an Old Testament history class. Prof. has 3 degrees in Old Testament so a LOT of focus on Isaiah chapters and the history behind it. Memorization of 3 Old Testament scriptures is tested on. Reading quizzes every class and are not open note. Tests are 1/2 reading 1/2 comprehensive lecture material.
Professor Sears is like that one seminary teacher that was your favorite. Pre-class readings take some time but they are really interesting. He is good at answering insightful questions in class.
Professor Sears is a good guy. I can tell he genuinely loves what he is teaching. The class talks a lot about history and context rather than doctrine, which isn't for me, but some may find it more interesting. Regardless, I learned a lot. If you do the work, the tests aren't bad, but they're half lecture based-half reading, so be prepared.
Attendance is part of the grade. Do the readings and pay attention and exams are easy. No papers to write, but lots of reading. He's funny and easy to approach. He's great at explaining things. He's a very fair and easy grader. He's focused on building testimonies and doesn't want his class to stress us out (unlike some religion professors).
I loved his lectures and the spirit he brings to the class, it made my day. make sure you go to class because it is part of the grade. I would say though if you have a heavy schedule I would avoid him because he has a crazy amount of reading, which I had to often skim because I had other homework I had to get done, but other than that he is great.
Very nice guy. Very willing to accommodate. Passing is quite doable. He just doesnt do it for me. If youre into The Old Testament and Isaiah, this is your guy.
This class was great! Professor Sears gives very interesting lectures and is super accessible. Everything in his class was super clear, including grading criteria, tests, and lectures. If you do the readings and pay attention in class, I don't see how you could fail. I would highly recommend if you still need religion credit!
I loved taking this class from Bro Sears! He is extremely knowledgable about the scriptures, and can answer almost any question in regards to ancient texts. This made his lectures different from anything I'd heard before. He is also very kind, inclusive, and cares about the success of his students. He will prep you for the tests! Highly recommend!
Sears is awesome! He is super knowledgable and I loved his lectures, I felt like I learned a lot. As long as you stay on track with the reading quizzes and assignments (which isn't hard), you will succeed.
Prof. Sears would be a great professor for an Old Testament class. His book of Mormon class felt like a history class. If that's your vibe, great. I was not impressed and wished I had a more spiritually uplifting experience rather than an experience full of ancient facts. He also spends A LOT of time on the Isaiah chapters of 2 Nephi so buckle up.
This guy is such a hand talker and I find it hilarious. Good class though.
Brother Sears was amazing for Writings of Isaiah. He really knows his stuff, and his lectures are really interesting. He closes every lecture with a brief testimony, which left me feeling uplifted after every class. There are five small tests, but they are easy. Homework can be long sometimes, but it isn't difficult. Absolutely recommend his class!
Brother Sears completely changed my opinion of Isaiah and made it understandable. He was so kind and caring and was great about answering tough questions. We had a small paper, five small tests that were super easy with a bit of studying, and a mostly self-graded final project. I left class every day feeling uplifted. Take his class if you can!
Professor Sears is a fantastic teacher and he cares a lot about the subject that he teaches and he is on the side of the students. There are no essays in this class which was really nice because most Christ and His everlasting Gospel courses do have essays. There is a reasonable amount of homework.
The best religion class I have taken at BYU. Harder than some religion classes I have taken, but not bad at all. The first two weeks have a lot of reading, but after that it cools down.
Brother Sears is the PERFECT balance of being spiritual but the class not being too hard. I still grew spiritually and the class wasn't too stressful. The tests were clear and there weren't surprises. You have to memorize a scripture for each of the 4 tests but it isn't too hard. Take him!
If you're looking for an easy religion class I would not recommend Writings of Isaiah. Tons of reading and memorization for the tests! Interesting and I learned a lot but by far the most difficult religion class I've taken at BYU!
I LOVED THIS CLASS! Easy A and I learned and grew so much. Tests were a piece of cake, and reading assignments were easy and interesting. My knowledge and faith grew, and I have a deeper and more personal understanding of who Heavenly Father and Jesus are, and have a much more meaningful relationship with Them. 100/10 recommend taking this class!!!
I was not a fan of his teaching. I took Christ and His everlasting gospel from him and not once did he expound or teach from the Book of Mormon. I was really upset when we learned about the atonement and he chose to teach us from early Christian scholars instead of our revealed scriptures. Teaching was by the power of the intellect not the spirit.
There are four tests. If you're doing the study guides with the readings assigned, the tests are super easy. They are literally the exact questions word for word. He is super smart, fair, and willing to answer questions/help whenever. He is the best teacher to take when deciphering Isaiah or any Old Testament in the BOM. Overall, awesome teacher!
You read a lot in this class but his biggest motto is "no surprises on the test" and so he will always tell you what you need to know before you take it. He never puts obscure details on tests that were never even talked about in class.
I always felt the spirit when I was in class. Brother Sears is just a genuinely great guy. There's a lot of reading for hw, but it's church stuff so it's uplifting. He always promises that there are no surprises on the tests, and he holds to that promise. He responds super fast to emails and always offers to meet with students outside of class
If you are going to take a Book of Mormon class at BYU, please, please, take it from Brother Sears. Every single lecture feels just a little bit life changing. Brother Sears is super smart, and the spirit in each class is nearly tangible. Yes, there are some readings, but they are incredibly inspiring and will pretty much ensure an A on the tests.
The professor is a really nice guy and he's a great teacher but the class itself is kinda hard. You have to really pay attention to understand and do well on the tests. I feel like he worries more about the test and checking off all the boxes rather than spiritually strengthening.
Writings of Isaiah was quite an easy class, in spite of the material. He shows you all the possible questions for tests. There are a lot of readings outside of class, around 2 hours for each class, but they are not overly burdensome.
I have nothing against Bro Sears, he is a kind soul and a good guy. However, his classes were the dullest and most uninspiring things I have ever been to. I am a front row type of guy and I try to stay super engaged but I fell asleep 5 times in this class. If you really like facts and the history of stuff great. Not spiritually uplifting tho.
Bro. Sears is the best! His lectures were both spiritual and informational and I left every single class learning something new that changed my perspective entirely. He is able to explain complicated topics in a simple way. If you can any of his classes please do!! He also understands that its a 2 credit class so the workload is manageable.
I gained so many new Book of Mormon insights from Brother Sears, especially the Isaiah chapters. He explains things clearly, grading is easy, the exams are never a surprise (I got 100% on all of the tests). You only have to write one paper, the workload isn't super heavy, though I spent more time on homework because I actually enjoyed the reading.
I took the first half of the Book of Mormon class from him. He's a super nice guy, and there are short reading assignments before each class, but the classes ended up only being about Isaiah and ancient Israelite stories, and the tests were basically all Isaiah questions too. The class was supposed to get to Alma 30, but we barely got to Mosiah.
literally the easiest class ever. you will get out of it what you put in it spiritually, but if you do the bare minimum, you will get an A. he believes in no surprises, so he gives a study guide for exams and half the questions are copy and paste homework questions. super knowledgable guy, good class.
I took REL395A. The tests are really easy, all pretty much verbatim from reading guides and topics in class. His discussion of the Fall of Adam and Eve changed my life. It was full of the Spirit and gave me a better mindset on how to approach hard times. He is a good man and has a good testimony of the Book of Mormon and scriptures.
Prof. Sears made this difficult course much more manageable. His lessons were engaging and he provided great study resources like quizzes and guides. unstuck ai also helped me prepare efficiently. Overall, a challenging but rewarding class.
took him for Univ, wasn't hard at all but there is reading and a discussion before every class. Wasn't too much to do but there's probably better profs for this. Kinda boring but he's very nice and caring
