loved him
he looks like Waldo from "Where's Waldo?" hes completely useless if you ask him questions. over all his class is kind of boring. not to mention he crams like 8 chapters into each test, so theres A LOT to study.
Extremely hard in his grading, does not help students very much and its impossible to get an A on his tests. Do NOT take him for Biology if possible
Goto class for clickers, weekly assingments online, monthly exams from his notes. Standard intro class.
He was a good professor, his leactures could be a little long and extensive, but overall it's just a typical 100 level class. nothing to really cry about though.
very hard. he says that u just need to study the notes but u have to also read the chs wich r all over 30 pgs and theres about 35 of the. tand believe me when i say u need to study at least a half hr every night on what u did cvause otherwise u will not do well on the test. they r hard. i kno u dont want to, but u just need to study
Not going to lie, Its tough. Basically, his tests are on his lectures, however in order to understand what you are trying to cram in your head from the notes (at midnight before the test). LOOK AT THE BOOK. I guarantee if you make the effort. This class is not as bad as everyone is saying. Hes not a tough professor, just study.(a wee bit stressful)
Dr. Stevenson is a botanist from Canada...that's pretty much all that needs be said about him. His class is tough, TONS of memorization and that's pretty much it. He practically asks you to memorize every order, phylum, class, family, taxonomy word in the text and puke it back up on tests.
He's okay with teaching the material. His notes are similar to the weekly assessments and exams. However, his voice is monotonous, making the lectures very boring.
Stevenson's lectures are absolutley monotonous and it makes it very difficult to absorb any of the material. The tests aren't horrible but they are made difficult because the way he words the questions makes it difficult to answer if you don't know everything about the topic.
Kinda boring. I do like the set up of the class though. I basically taught myself the material but I liked it that way. He outlines what he wants you to know and just fill in the blanks. not too hard. ALOT of information. Tests are easier than they used to be I hear. Really smart guy. He also requires 'clickers' in class
He does clickers everyday. The tests are based on lectures. He goes through about a whole chapter a day so it is a very fast paced class. Study the lecture slides and the essay questions he gives you before the tests and you will do fine.
A predictable intro class. Daily attendance required if you want clicker points. My clicker only worked half the time, but he is pretty easy to negotiate with.
Tedious lectures due to lack of enthusiasm for teaching. However, he is very knowledgeable on the topic, but you can question how much of his knowledge you absorb through his class. I felt like the book taught me more than I learned from him.
Knowledgable guy, knows his stuff. Lectures are pretty boring, mostly everyone just goes for clicker points. If you read the book, you will pass with flying colors. I didn't know that until the 3rd exam, but it would've helped a lot. Tests are specific, unlike his review slides. Tests are easier than Prav's. Overall, I reccommend Stevenson.
good class. ur grade is all about test. 4 test, all required, worth 20% each. they r not too bad as long as u study the notes. 15 min a night and 2 hrs the night before the exam and u will get an A, i did. very fair guy, gives good amount extra clicker pts for absence. u dont need the testbook as long as u study his notes. test r right from them.
I learned more than I expected in this class. Obviously took the basics in high school, but learned a ton more than I did then. His notes are easy to understand and make everything simpler. His tests are directly off his notes, so you know exactly what needs to be studied. I enjoyed this class. I suggest anyone needing BIOL 190 take him.
Easy and interesting class. use lecture which are posted on line as a reference when reading the book and you will get an a or high b. lectures were occasionally boring but very useful information. tests were fair and relatively easy, i think the class averages were always above 70
Easy class. You don't even need to read the textbook in order to do well in his exam. Everything you need to study for is straight from his powerpoint notes. He offers plenty of extra credit as well. No surprise that a lot of students get As in his class.
His lectures can be a little dry at time but they were worth going to considering you got extra credit points via clicker questions. The class material was interesting and it is an overall "easy" class. Don't get me wrong you have to study but its not a class that will kill you.
I took this class in the summer. It was a very straightforward class & not difficult to complete in summer school even though there is a lot of material covered quickly. PowerPoint lectures were often dry, but the topics were presented clearly and well. All the info you need can be found in the lecture slides, but the textbook is sometimes helpful.
He's one of the professor who organizes his lectures in the most clear way. Lectures gonna be little dry but it worth it. The way he teaches, I love it. I gained the most amount of information with the least amount of the time in his class. Great teacher and great personality.
OK, brutally honest here. Dont take this class for granted cuz its a 100 level. You have to do a crap load of studying to get an A in this class. If you have to get A's for your major, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! Teacher is kinda helpful but that does not matter cuz the tests are kinda worded tricky Get ready to study and puke the info back onto the test
The last comment confused me a little. Stevenson's class is very easy as long as you study the powerpoints before going into an exam. His exams are strightforward compared to other ones I have seen. There are also a extra credit opprotunities that can raise your grade by up to 6 percent if you need it. Take his class.
His lecture might seem boring, but the lecture helps you a lot on the exam so try to go to lecture. Those people posted negative comments about stevenson just don't know hot to study and lack efforts. It's TYPICAL 100 level classes. Study the slides A LOT !! Read it through carefully 10 times and try to understand what's behind. You will get an A.
Wonderful teacher
Excellent teacher. Very clear and much easier to understand than other bio professors. Tests don't trick you, just study the slides and you will do well.
Although this class can be boring at times, Dr. Stevenson gives "bonus" points for attending lecture and also doing online homework. He posts his notes online, and the tests are strickly from the notes. I never even used the book. If you study, it's an easy class. But if you don't study or attend lectures, you're pretty much out of luck.
Not sure why someone flagged my post. Stevenson exams are tough, dont let these other posts fool you. I know how to study. I couldnt get a B on any of his exams for the life of me. UNR professors are lazy compared to TMCC.He is funny but all he does is read from his powerpoint in class, students use clickers, masteringbio for extra credit.
To do well in his class, you need to memorize all his power points. Not mandatory to attend and does have extra credit points. Only reason to go are for the extra points for the clicker questions. Very boring and I had little interest.
Way easy class, and also interesting. This prof is crystal clear on what he wants, but it's true he doesn't exactly engage you in his lectures. If you have any willpower to actually do well, you'll do just fine. I'm taking another class from him; totally recommended.
Easy professor. Show up for extra credit, extra credit homework for review, and tests are straight from the slide. It's a little monotonous but it is biology.
His lectures are pretty dry, but it is important to attend lecture. Clicker points and masteringbio homework make up 4% extra credit on overall grade. Four exams, all worth 25%. They aren't easy exams, but if you prepare, you will do well.
Super easy class. Lecture's were fun to attend. All tests come straight from the lecture notes, plus he gives extra credit for doing mastering biology hw and coming to class to answer clicker questions. Up to 4% extra credit! Stevenson is a great guy, funny, and smokin hot.
LOVED this professor! Your grade in the class is based off of 4 tests and all the content comes directly from the powerpoints. Also 4% extra credit is offered. Memorize the powerpoints, you'll get an A for sure. Very easy going, nice and helpful, I recommend him 100%
I personally had a hard time with the class. The subject matter is dry, and material comes straight from the powerpoints. I had trouble on a test, even though I studied, and got belittled upon going into his office for help. Maybe I caught him on a bad day, but he was condescending when I asked him questions and treated me like I was stupid.
This professor is extremely intelligent. He has a huge interest in the subject and knows how to explain it to his students in a clear and simple way. Class is based on 4 tests that only need a few nights of studying before to get A's. Going to class makes the tests pretty easy.
Does an excellent job of covering a great deal of material and is EXTREMELY clear as to how the class will be laid out. All four tests have the same format (1/4 of the course material each) and have the same value, meaning no wondering if a big cumulative final will ruin your grade. If you can't get at least a B here, you can only blame yourself.
Great teacher, so far my favorite Biol teacher. His lectures are easy to understand, and tests are fairly easy if you study a good amount. He is very funny and will keep you awake. Homework isn't too bad.
Extremely easy. Nice guy. Kept class interesting. Easy A, just make sure you study the power point slides.
Exams are based on his powerpoint slides. There are 4 exams total (including the final). Exams are not cumulative and each exam is worth 25% of your grade, including the final. He keeps class interesting and throws in a joke here and there. Class participation (clicker questions) and homework (mastering bio) are all extra credits.
Insanely easy class. Just glance over the powerpoints and you'll get A's on all the tests. I'm not even a science major and this class was easy. No homework, no attendance, extra credit, best class ever.
If you're not good with exams, then this wouldn't be a good professor. The overall grades consist of 4 exams, and they're all from the powerpoints. His exam questions are tricky so you have to memorize ALL the slides.
4 exams = grade. Take a different prof. Stevenson is dry but knows his material well.
Stevenson is a fantastic professor. The material is dense but it will be regardless of who you take this class with; besides this is the basis for many other classes. He is tremendously intelligent and gives his students every chance for success. Go to lecture, study your notes and do the homework. It's that simple.
As others have noted, your grade is taken from 4 exams. Homework is for extra credit as is attendance. The exams are taken directly from the PowerPoint slides which are available online. He posts a study guide prior to tests telling you exactly which topics from slides are important. Put forth a moderate amount of effort and get a good grade.
This class was not for me. It was boring and very broad. The only grade is four tests. Clickers and homework offer a little extra credit. The professor is nice enough, but I found it difficult to go to class. A little more effort would have gotten me an A.
He changed his grading policy to make mastering biology count for 20% of your grade and the 4 tests are also 20%. He reads his notes directly from the power point slides . His tests are 45 multiple choice and one short answer. His in class notes are very broad, but his tests are very specific, you have to read the book. Extra credit clicker points
A good teacher, just have to follow the powerpoints. He expects you to learn, but missing class doesn't hurt you too much. He does use clickers though, so by skipping you might miss those. ALWAYS go on the last day before the test--clicker points galore and he reviews everything.
Stevenson is an incredibly easy Prof. I stopped paying attention in class because lectures go online and thats exactly what the test is on. All you have to do is study and do the homework. Easy B+A-. Clicker questions are extra credit.
Stevenson is a great professor. Attendance is extra credit, one homework assignment a week, and 4 tests in the semester. Everything is 20% of your grade with up to 2% extra credit. Very clear expectations and tests are straight out of the powerpoint slides. I would definitely take him again!
He makes the subject boring because he loves plants. Homework was the biggest waste of time. It used to be extra credit and I think he should go back to that because it is just busy work. If it's on the HW, but he never talked about it in class, it won't be on the test. So it's pointless. Super easy A, just boring.
Prof. Stevenson gives tests straight from the powerpoint slides and has a clear expectation. He has a dry sense of humor and does his best to keep the broad subject matter interesting. He recognizes the class is boring and broad, but he teaches it very well and gives extra credit (clickers).
Took during summer. The online tests(open book) and homework were easy and I went in to the final with an A, but the final exam was the most in-depth and thorough cumulative test I've ever taken. He posted video lectures online and PowerPoint slides so i just studied everything for the final bc I wasn't really sure what else to. I got an A overall.
He is very clear about his grading and his slides are exactly what's on the test. There is mastering biology homework, but he doesn't even look at it for tests. Clicker questions are an extra 2% at the end of the semester which is nice! Funny and nice guy.
Stevenson was a pretty good professor. His lectures weren't the most engaging but the test material comes directly from the slides and as long as you go over those and attend class you'll be fine. He also gives 2% extra credit for attendance (clicker points). Homework feels like busywork.
Dr. Stevenson does his best to make the class interesting, but the long lectures don't do any favors. His tests come straight from the PowerPoint presentations he shows in class daily. There is 2% extra credit bonus for attempting clicker questions in class daily. A lot of work is necessary to survive, even more so for an A, so be prepared...
You don't have to study a ton of materials as he condenses it into lecture notes, but you need to understand the concepts. I would have done better if I didn't get tricked by questions on the exams. Only gives A,B,C,D,F... no +/-. Mastering Bio was 20% of grade, so don't get behind. 2% bonus for clicker quizzes to overall grade.
4 Exams: 20% each. Mastering Bio: 20%. Clicker points for extra credit: 2%. Memorize the slides for exams, do the hw, go to class for clicker points, and you'll get the grade you want. The class can get a little boring, but every once in a while, Josh would roast a kid for talking too much, so that was fun.
I would take this teacher again. I very much enjoyed Professor Stevenson's class. His tests come straight from his lecture; not much use of the textbook. The lectures may be bland at moments, but to me, the class was a relatively easy one. Pay attention to what he is presenting on the powerpoint as well as what he says.
Didn't open the textbook once, all you need to study is the slides he posts online. They can be a bit confusing, especially for the taxonomy unit, so I recommend going to class. He made me want to switch out of the Bio major almost because he made the lectures so boring that I got scared all bio classes would be as boring as his.
Not a horrible class. Long, boring lectures, 2 assignments on MasteringBiology weekly, 80% of class grade is dependent on 4 exams (midterms and finals are not comprehensive).
One word I would use to describe this course is boring. Attendance is not mandatory so not even a third of the class shows up to lecture. He goes over lecture notes during class and thats it. Tests are based on notes. Class is medium difficulty, you will need to study the notes to pass. To me he seems a bit unapproachable, and not too caring.
This class was not terrible, but the lectures are unbearably boring. Attendance is not mandatory and slides are uploaded so nobody goes. Attend the review classes before the tests to get a sense of his question wording as it can be tricky. Final is not comprehensive so that is helpful. Don't take this class if it's not required for your degree.
Stevenson is a decent lecturer. The information is just dull so his lectures are as well. Never went to class besides the first couple weeks. Just studied EVERYTHING on his uploaded slides and got an A on every test. Not a difficult class unless you have a hard time memorizing a lot of information at once.
One of my favorite intro class so far. Class expectations are very clear. 80% tests 20% assignments. A couple of the tests are hard, but the assignments are easy that bring up your grade. Lectures can be boring but are straight to the point.
Lectures can be somewhat boring. All you need to do to prepare for the exams is study the power points; I never touched my book. He also gives you possible questions that may be asked for the short answer portion of the exams. The multiple choice was usually straight forward with a few tricky questions. Final is not cumulative.
Professor Stevenson is a great professor. Ask questions whenever you need clarification on a topic and you should do well in his class. There is no online homework. There are only exams, so study and read. The labs are pretty easy as well. The grading on the labs might depend on the TA you have.
There is a total of three tests. Reading the book and looking at practice exam questions are really helpful. Sometimes he points out what will be on the test. The lectures are boring. I rarely attended class but did really well in the lab component of the class, which really helped my grade.
Very boring lectures, however I am not a bio major. You can tell he really has a passion for bio but no one really enjoys going to this general ed class because it is all lecture. 4 tests and labs.
You do not need to buy a textbook for this class. Everything he teaches you in his lectures will be on the tests. He puts his powerpoints up online for you to access, so you don't necessarily need to go to class, but he explains things very well in person. His tests are average. A lot to memorize but it was overall pretty easy.
Stevenson doesn't seem super enthused unless you're a science major. Nonetheless his grading criteria is very clear and the syllabus is followed to a tee. All of his lectures are posted online so class isn't super mandatory. 4 labs and 4 exams.
This class was not too bad. The content wasn't too hard if you go to class and look at the practice questions he gives in class only. The book isn't necessary since his power points and videos are online. He clearly tells you what he wants and the homework doesn't take too long. Lecture are a bit dull, but he makes sarcastic jokes which get a laugh
Eighty percent tests, twenty percent homework. That's it. If you like biology, take it with Stevenson. He's a decent lecturer, tries to be funny, and is definitely the best choice in the biology department. This class is easier than 190, in my opinion. If I had gone to every single class I would probably have an A.
Dr. Stevenson is a fantastic lecturer, especially if you are a visual learner; he lectures with the corresponding visuals side by side to the PowerPoints. He knows that the class can be boring and tries his best to make it interesting. Easy going and he does his best to help his students. Hes also easy on the eyes, which is a bonus.
He is a very good lecturer, and he is very funny. I would definitely take him again. He makes sure the slides are posted before class and his tests are very easy if you study his handout. He does not give extensions or extra credit. He does not drop low grades. Now that's out of the way, his homeworks are easy (quizlet if on a time crunch - free)
Very boring lectures. Most of the class was in that book. His review sessions didn't prepare you for the exams at all.
Tests are straight from the lecture notes. Mastering biology is tedious but are easy points. Uses the same text as the previous class which is good nothing to buy. The course is pretty much a repeat of high school biology.
Dr. Stevenson is good at explaining the concepts in this course, and does try to bring some humor into his lectures considering that this can be a pretty boring class. His tests are very fair, and in order to do well you should study the lecture notes as other people have mentioned. Overall not to bad of a class.
I only attended class 4 the reviews and tests. 4 tests all curved, nothing else, slides are put on canvas as well as study guides for the long answer question. Alot of material 4-5 chs per test, no xtra credit. Just make flash cards and study, would recommend book i kept having to borrow it from a friend. We hand an easy lab but getting rid of it.
He's a good teacher and the tests are curved. The lectures are really boring though, but all the information is put online so it's fine. I would take him again.
The class is straight forward, anything on the lecture Powerpoint slide (posted online) is a candidate to be on the test. This means that you do not have to attend lecture, but even the smallest of details such as a simple definition for an unusual word can be on the test. Study ahead of time so you're not learning new content in the last hour.
Dr. Stevenson was into the material which always makes the lectures more enjoyable. He posts all the lecture slides on canvas so attendance is not mandatory. Memorize the slides and the exams are a piece of cake. Would recommend if you still need to take a science class.
straight forward and fair. he met all my expectations of a professor who teaches a lecture hall. humorous at times and explains concepts fairly well.
There isn't much to the course itself. It may prove difficult for some, but it's fairly straightforward. Stevenson is able to explain these concepts well and is open to all questions. Never went to lectures because he posted the slides online with voiceovers. MasteringBiology is annoying, but that's my one complaint. I would take his class again.
He's a decent teacher. The worst part about his classes are that they're lecture hall classes, so it's understandable that he treats you more like a number than an individual. Josh Stevenson isn't a bad Prof, but go to TMCC if you can. you learn more and most of the teachers up there (in general) actually care about your academic success.
My favorite class so far (biology major). I wish the assignments were worth more and the tests were worth less. Stevenson is a decent professor.
Dr. Stevenson was a good professor and made things clear. Class was pretty straightforward and there are no surprises, mastering biology every week due on Sundays, 4 tests throughout the semester which are based upon the lectures. Study efficiently and you'll do just fine.
Memorize all the slides leading up to each midterm, and do all of the MasteringBio homework and youll get an A in the class for sure. Attendance is not mandatory but really try to commit the slides to memory and use the textbook as an aid if you dont understand a certain topic or figure. Could easily be done the night before as an all nighter.
Professor Stevenson was very knowledgeable about the subject and lectured well. The tests are solely based on the slide, but it is overwhelming at first because he will choose very small details from the slides to put on the test. So memorize everything on the slides. Overall, it was an ok class. Need to memorize but doable.
I barley went to this class and managed to finish all of my homework and study. The lectures are posted online so it is easy access. The lectures are interesting, but long.
I have never been more frustrated and disappointed in a science class in my entire life. Stevenson gives 4 tests and mastering biology, so if you do poorly on a 1 test it tanks your grade. He's very unapproachable and not very considerate. He lectures the entire class and doesn't provide anything to enhance or make his class fun in any way.
I mean I'm pretty terrible when it comes to science anyways, but I was hoping for a bit more. No interaction within the class. Straight lecture for an hour and a half. Hw once a week. Tests every 3-4 weeks. If that's you and you can deal with that then go for it, for me I was hoping for some more enthusiasm. Pass hw and 4 exams and that's it.
He's kinda funny but for the most part, his lectures were boring. I just made flashcards and never went to class and it was the easiest A I've got.
I took his class over summer and loved it. The material could be slow if you do the class over a full semester. He has a funny sense of humor and explains everything in depth. If you ask a question he doesn't know, he will research it and answer it during the next lecture. He is straight forward and fair. Memorize the slides to ace the tests
It's an average class. He's really into the material but for many students it will seem boring. To pass you just have to memorize his slides, you don't even need to show up. His tests have gotten harder as we've progressed but he throws massive curves on them. Not bad, not great, easy A.
You do not have to show up to this class! Go the first day grab the syllabus and only show up for review sessions and test days. The lecture slides are on canvas and the professor just reads off of them without going further into detail. The textbook helped and is way more detailed. Dont waste your time in this class.
He was okay. Goes over slides during class but he also posted them online so you don't really need to go to class. mastering biology homework due every week. 4 exams none cumulative. go to class, do your homework, study a little, and you'll pass.
Dr. Stevenson was good. He posts the slides and then goes over them during lecture. He gives examples and analogies and explains things well. There are two HW assignment due each Sunday but they are not too difficult. He posts study guides for his exams and a list of possible long answer questions; study those and the slides for the exam.
Took this as a filler class. Graded on four exams and online homework. He mainly reads off of the slides. Posts recorded lectures online, so I didn't bother coming to lectures. Test comes directly from the slides. Be able to answer the short answer questions that he posts online for each exam. Do the homework, but don't bother studying them.
The best use of your time is never going to lecture. He posts every lecture online with an outline telling you exactly what slides to take notes on. If you memorize literally every word of the slides, the tests are cake. UNR Biology 191 Exam 2, 3, or 4 on Quizlet for those exams, I lived by them. EASY A if you're good at memorization.
Stevenson's tests are straight powerpoint. Spend a couple hours memorizing the slides and you'll do fine on the tests. Each test is 20% and there are 4 tests plus homework (20%). The final is not cumulative. I didn't go to class because it's a waste of time. He's a good guy, but he's monotone and lectures are so dry. No (+/-) so don't mess around
This class was fine, as was Dr. Stevenson. Its long lectures everyday, so if you're really interested in biology you might like it, otherwise it might seem dull. study the power points for tests and you will do okay. Do not talk during lecture because even in a class of 200 students he will SOMEHOW notice and ask you to stop or leave.
Very clear and easy to understand expectations and course material.
He was very unaccommodating during the coronavirus situation. Did not curve an exam that had a 61% avg which made it very hard for students to get their grades back up to an A. Other than that, lectures can be boring. The first two exams were hard but the last two were easier. Just study powerpoints. Homeworks were easy but unhelpful for exams
I honestly hated his class. His lectures were so dull and hard to follow. He offered 0 extra credit and none of the exams were curved. Idk maybe it was me, but this class was hard to succeed in.
Grade is based off homework assignments weekly online and 4 tests. Tests are very specific so study for those. Homework is pretty easy. Pretty boring classes, but easy class overall. I recommend taking him if you aren't very interested in the class and just need the credit.
I thought taking this class online would be fine... until I had to watch the prerecorded lectures for this class. This man has such a boring and monotonous voice & his lectures don't prepare you for the tests. You have to teach yourself and there's no extra credit. His "study guides" are a list of sections in the textbooks that you should memorize
This is probably the class I hated the most after 2 years of being at UNR if we're being honest. He's extremely bland during lectures and is paranoid that everyone is cheating during exams. He once thought this kid was cheating but they ended up getting over 100% with the curve. Some people like him some people don't. To each their own.
Too much mastering, but covid so yeah. The final is hard but not worth that much.
Professor Stevenson puts as little effort into his class as possible. His lectures for each chapter are about 10 minutes, and do not help at all for exams. The exams are open book, and good thing because there is no possible way you could study enough to pass them if they were closed book. He really does not care about this class.
Love the online courses! Can work full time and get intro course done.
If I would have put the same amount of effort into this class as Mr. Stevenson I would have for sure failed. Lectures not live, are prerecorded, dull and its only 10-18 minutes, have to be able to use the eBook to teach yourself. I should not have had to pay for this class, maybe just the textbook.
I'm not sure how he is in an in-person class, however his online class set up was pretty boring. He gave 10 minute videos for each chapter, then we would need to read the textbook for the rest of the information. The midterm exams were fairly easy because they were open book, however I would still like to have a longer video for each chapter.
To the people who I see getting C's in his class, how ?
Class was composed of dull, vague, pre-recorded lectures, and you'd have to read the book word for word to actually learn (which isn't realistic). Lots of Mastering Bio hw. The only reason why I have a decent grade is because midterms are open book, but the final is not. Huge lack of effort on the professor's part, you're 100% teaching yourself.
This class was awful. It was entirely self-taught and I feel like I got nothing out of this class aside from a waste of money. He puts little effort into the actual lectures (they're only ten minutes long) and the tests are "anything in the book is fair game". The midterms are open book which is fine, but the final isn't.
For covid and being online this course had so little effort put into it from the professors end its ridiculous. 10 min intro videos of each chapter where he just read the slides with the exams being extremely in depth on the material... it did not add up nor was it fair. This class would not be hard if it was an actual class with real lectures.
Online due to COVID. Exams are open book & incredibly difficult. They're pulled from a Pearson test bank. The final is cumulative which would be okay had there been actual lectures. Instead, there's 10 minute videos reading off slides. After exam 3, he said good job but the final will even out grades. Encouraging.
Everything everyone has said before me is correct. The amount of effort Professor Stevenson put into this class during COVID is actually so low that for half of the semester I didnt even know his name, thats how little he communicated. Literally no zoom classes were given, I basically paid hundreds of dollars to teach myself. Ridiculous.
This class was by the the most challenging course I have taken. Biology shouldn't be a course that is asynchronous. If you have ADHD/ADD or struggle with holding yourself accountable, do not take this class. This course was all self taught, with no zoom lectures, or really any VALUABLE lectures worth watching at that, for he just reads the slides.
ZERO STARS. Probably the worst professor Ive ever had. Zero zoom classes during the pandemic. Has no understanding for his students whatsoever. Assigns mastering and midterms that are nothing like the final (30% of grade). Final is NOT curved and no extra credit. Will not help students in need. Should not be a teacher.
Worst professor and class I have had during COVID. 3 midterms are open book and the final isn't. The final makes up your entire grade and it's a lot harder than the midterms. Entirely self taught class. Sent out 10 min videos at the beginning of the semester and barely heard from him since. Get ready for rude emails if you have any personal issues.
Worst class Ive probably taken in my life, especially during COVID. Gave 10 minute lectures where he reads off the slides. VERY RUDE! Will not help with anything. Wont actually teach you anything, its all self taught. Exams were open note but super hard to prepare for and the final was closed book and proctored. Only advice: TAKE ANYONE BUT HIM!
If you want to pay to be your own tutor, join this class. It's embarrassing how little effort this man put into "teaching." The 10-15 minute long chapter "lectures", passive aggressive emails, and inaccurate study materials demonstrate his lack of care for his students. Incredibly unprofessional and careless.
Describing this instructor as useless would be an understatement. He did absolutely nothing to help his students with this class and doesn't care. He put no effort into teaching this class and explicitly told us that if we email him about any personal issues or about anything on the syllabus, he simply will not answer. Don't even waste your time.
Overall prof. Stevenson did not do anything this entire course. He doesnt even bother teaching this course. I get that theres a pandemic and its tough online but at least put some effort into teaching. You cant expect STUDENTS to TEACH themselves when your the dang PROFESSOR. I would never recommend this professor if my life depended on it
Its true that our first 3 exams were rough as they were heavily textbook-oriented, however, the professor changed it so that the final reflected his lectures more fairly. I cannot comment on his rudeness or lack of simply because I never emailed him, but some people in the class admitted to not studying so of course exams are going to be hard...??
Zero professor feedback or participation. All of the work is through mastering and the only lecture content you receive is through a short ten minute lecture per chapter. he had a very not my problem attitude towards other students in our class who asked for help.
It was a nice break from Zoom overload. No Zoom here. I already have 12 hours a week of Zoom lectures and that is too much Zoom. Zoom.
Lots of textbook reading. No required attendance. Helpful office hours.
I had 3 exams for this class, all the questions are taken from the slides that are presented. Studying for the class was done all through flash cards in my case, and that was enough to do well. Luckily was generous with free response questions.
Never once posted actual lectures or anything of the like. Rather, he uploaded videos of him reading slides provided by Pearson word for word and thought that would suffice.
This is a basic bio class so all the people who took this class too seriously are probably the ones who did not do well. I got an A from looking at his slides that he posted and reading the book. I initially took detailed notes but the basic logic is only needed for homework and the quizzes are like the homework.
Great class!
An improved repeat of my high school biology
As an online course I hated it because he goes very fast and doesnt really care if you fall behind. Unless you are fast writer expect to be going back into the slides to catch up. Skips around in the powerpoints which sucks for the homework because he doesnt go over everything in the PowerPoint. Doesnt seem like a bad prof but very to the point
I like the course more without discussion groups!
I loved this class because it was easy. Graded only by MasteringBio and tests. I didn't ever go to class and tests are open note, expect for the cumulative final. But even the final wasn't bad. Mastering Biology is a pain, but you can cram it all into an hour the night it's due. I'd highly recommend it if you need the credit.
This professor disabled chat during lectures, which made it hard to ask questions and collaborate with the class. This made it hard to engage with the material and he just reads you the presentations. His test was open note/book but the final isn't. The class wasn't hard or easy but he could put in more effort to help his students.
He was always quick to respond to emails and available to review exams
Took it online during summer session. Midterms were open note/book and not proctored, but final was closed note/book and proctored (was super hard so be sure to study study study). Highly recommend studying the outlines he gives!!! No extra credit, just Mastering assignments and exams.
Talks a lot, kind of monotonous. Tests are very straightforward like the lectures, homework is rated pretty high to water down test grades. Overall a regular college science course. Not too exciting, but not overwhelming or annoying. Doing the readings help for the homework, but lectures are much easier/directly related to the exam.
he is such a boring professor. all his lectures are very monotone and long, almost guaranteed to fall asleep. Be prepared for long lecture slides outside of class, with nothing but words.
Spends majority of class sessions covering material from previous class sessions. Don't bother going to him for questions, because "in the grand scheme of things, after this test, you won't be responsible for this information". Breaks 20 minutes into a 1.25hr class. Let's focus on the material and cover it completely before letting out early?? F--
This class is WAY better than 190. Be prepared to study about 20 chapters worth of bio. He expects you to watch his video and read the textbook before lecture. You do not have to show up to lecture because he posts all the slides online. The only thing I dislike is that exams are 60% of your grade. He is both rude and funny.
Stevenson is the most boring professor. His lectures are bland and if you take it in the morning, you will be guaranteed to fall asleep. Not only is he boring, but his slides are long and confusing most of the time, and thats where most of the test comes from.
His class is pretty straight-forward. There's four exams, and they're all weighed equally. His lectures are a bit boring, but everything on the exam comes directly from the notes. So as long you study the notes, you'll be good.
Take this class if you have time to study for it. You need to spend time days before the test or you will not do well. The questions are example specific and very word specific. This is not a class you can cram for because if you screw up on one test, you are completely screwed. He doesn't drop exams or give any extensions on homework. No mercy.
I never went to lecture and just made flashcards from his slides, I would say notetaking is unnecessary. I watched his short videos and practiced the cards with spaced repetition. Got 92 on every test. No true understanding is needed, you just need to memorize the content. Homework is unrelated to tests. Tests aren't cumulative.
The content is easy enough, which is good because Stevenson isnt the most engaging lecturer. That said, his grading is relatively fair (60% tests, 40% Mastering assignments) and the test structure is pretty easy (45 points for multiple choice, 5 for free response). He gives you outlines of what to study for each test, and those are key!
He has a dry sense of humor and is monotone but I still found his lectures to be more interesting than trying to learn the material myself. This class would have been an easy A if I didn't skip all the lectures during the last quarter of his class.
I've never given a prof a bad review before, but I would take literally anyone else for BIO191. He is knowledgable about plant biology, but he is quite rude. Honestly, his lectures were so hard to stay awake in.... don't put yourself through it lol.
Very boring lecturer. I found it very difficult to follow along with his lectures more than half of the time. Tests have a lot of content from those same lectures so you will have to review the slides again and basically teach it to yourself all over again. Take a different class or find a different section with another professor if you can.
He's a pretty easy going professor, he's very knowledgeable about biology and his class wasn't that hard. As long as you read over the textbook a little and show up to class it'll be an easy pass, the exams are a little tough but if you study you'll be good and there's very little homework.
I literally watched this man yell at a student across an auditorium. He's so rude. Told students in the beginning of the year that most of them would either be unsatified or straight up fail this course. If you have questions or a problem he will talk down to you and make you feel so unbelieveably stupid. Will NEVER be taking this class again.
Very clear cut: 4 tests & hw for every unit. Test Qs were from slides & he always told us what he expected. Free responses posted before the test. Dont need to read textbook! If someone didnt like this course it might be because theyre a republican who couldnt take the the scientific facts discussed in class. He says sexy an absurd amount of times
He is not too bad. His lectures are easy to follow but sometimes he says stuff and explains diagrams more in person so I would recommend going to lectures. Whatever he talks about the most will be the most important things on the exams which helps.
I mean he's the only one teaching 191 so what can you do, but he wasn't bad and the class structure was really straightforward. He really expects you to read the book, but if you show up and just listen to him go over the slides you'll do fine. Super open to any questions. The dude is super predictable and likes to crack a few jokes here and there.
Very middle of the road lecture quality. Acts oddly standoffish in emails and sometimes in class. Bio 191 is a tough class to teach and I think he does a decent job of teaching it. The tests are very difficult to study for and take up a large proportion of your grade, but he does technically give you the tools to do so.
Very straightforward class. Easy to get a B, hard to achieve an A. His exams were sometimes difficult, but you can expect everything from slides to be on exams. Bolded terms on slides make up about 80% of exam questions so study them. HW is useless for exams and is 25% of ur grade, so just quizlet the entire thing. SHOW UP TO LECTURES, it helps!!
Professor is rude. Homework on mathlab useless, just use quizlet. Exams make up most of your grade so study the slides.
He is very disruptive during tests. Stickler mindset. All hw is due on one day which is easy. Hw has minimal effect on the tests. Study the slides and go to lecture to prepare. He is just gonna ask you random questions about stuff in the slides. I would take him if I had to, but he's just kinda rude.
4 "midterms" (15% each) & HW (40%) on covered chapters. The slides are indicative on what to know for exams. Quizlets that you can look up for his class are helpful. HWs are just there, not really beneficial for studying. It's a boring class and has a lot of content to memorize, so be prepared. And I wouldn't call him rude; he just looks stoic.
honestly class is just deathly boring. He is kind of rude but clear standards. Hard to get an A, easy to get a B.
tests can be somewhat difficult, but not too hard if you study the lecture notes. there is a lot of homework through pearson, but all of it is fairly simple. however, he does NOT care about his students, and even prefaces the class by explaining hes just looking forward to retirement.
He is very straightforward about expectations. Going to lecture is not necessary. All of the information on tests are from his lecture slides and videos that he posts on canvas. Homework is pointless but it is due on the day of exams(more time to get it done). He is sometimes rude, but he is knowledgable. Hard to get an A, easy B.
This was my first C I have ever received (3rd year). I think Josh has a witty personality, despite other rates, but lectures very monotone. Most of the grade is comprised of exams, and I did not feel the homework was a strong grade booster (Pearson hw). As a non-health/medical major, I found this class difficult.
He was an okay professor, he is very boring though. He just reads off the slides so just study those outside of class and it'll be fine. He is kind of rude in his lectures, but I don't think he wants to be teaching this course honestly. Exams are worth 60 and homework is worth 40, and its on Pearson (yuck). Hw doesn't really help much concept wise
He's straightforward on how to do well in his class. The homework is on pearson and they don't help if you're trying to study for his test, but they were easy to complete. the tests are easy, all you need to study is his PowerPoints since that's where he gets all the questions from.
He's extremely mid, it's not worth it to care too much about the HW and lectures since he's just reading off slides. The good thing about him though is how straightforward his tests are. Learned everything on his study guides from the textbook and Amoeba Sisters on yt and did fine on all exams. To everyone taking him, just study with the internet.
The lectures can be a bit dry, but Professor Stevenson lays out the material clearly. Attendance is mandatory, and the tests make up a large portion of the grade. Unstuck Study AI proved helpful for preparing, alongside the free textbook. Overall, a manageable class if you stay engaged.
He posts his lecture slides so attending class is a waste of time. There is a lot of content to learn and anything on the slides could be on the exams, so you have to make sure you study EVERYTHING. He makes his expectations of the class and all assignments very clear which is helpful, and gives you plenty of time to complete homework.
Straightforward class. Don't miss any assignments to earn full credit on homework and make sure to know everything on his powerpoints for the exams (any billet point is fair game).
I would highly recommend taking Stevenson to anyone who is worried about his rating. Everything you will be tested on in the exams are in the lecture and not from the textbook at all. As long as you go to class and practice flashcards this is a VERY easy and entertaining class. DO NOT think you can do well by just looking at the slides from home.
The class is difficult, but the professor is not bad. The online homework are easy and everything on the tests is strictly lecture material. Attendance is not mandatory but definitely beneficial if you show up. You have to be prepared to make and study flashcards consistently because going over the lecture slides won't be enough.
this teacher was the reason i stopped looking both ways before crossing the street, other than that the course work was literally all online, you do have to pay the $100 subscription for the semester Probably the most boring class you'll never take, you could probably only show for the test days and still pass
