really liked the guy, probalby one of the most animated teachers i've had. his tests were pretty easy, and the one paper you have to do in the class was cake. he really got everyone involved but dindt pick on anyone. cool young guy. we referred to him as "J DUB" haha

This was a great class! I think that it should be a mandatory class for High School Freshmen. Before they get into too serious of a relationship. So they will know the signs of a good or potentially bad relationship.

The class is really easy to pay attention in. He gets the class involved. At first I wasnt really into taking the whole class, but now i'm sad its over. He just makes the subject fun and interesting. He's a great teacher to get along with, and you will like the class from the first moment you walk in the door.

The material was extremely useful to my everyday life involving strangers, co workers, friends family and significant others. I took much of the concepts to heart and will use them in the future.

He keeps the class motivated, wanting to learn what joke he will say next, they are great real life examples for the way people behave. You can tell that his passion is working with people on the way they should communicate effectively.

Mr. Avera is eccentric in his teaching style. He makes something(the class subject) that I think most would feel is boring, very interesting and fun.

Mr. Avera is clear and understandable in his lectures. Uses many examples to fully understand the full concept of material. His grading is strict with no room to slack and you have to study a good amount of time to do well on test and quizzes. If you do the homework and study notes you will pass easily.

I'm not much of a "go to class and sit for a couple hours to learn" kind of girl, but being in that class for two hours a day 3 times a week was well worth it. everything that was taught related to my issues and troubles at the time. Mr. Avera is very funny one of the funniest teachers I ever had! Even thought the class was long he keeps everyone interested with his humor and real life storys. He has very good teaching skills, everyone seems to enjoy the videos and the powerpoints. Who could ask for a better teacher.

I took his class during Winter Quarter of 2008 and it was fun being in his class. He is very lenient with everything and anything. Homework, quizzes, and presentation is very easy to do. Just attend his class, do all class work, and you for sure will pass with flying colors.

This is still a public speaking course! Don't be fooled by the title and description. That class is communication 10: Oral commmunication, but there are just as many speaches as a public speaking class. Mr. Avera is very helpful and funny. I learned a lot in this class. This also seemed to be somwhat of a psychology/ comedy class. Great teacher.

Mr. Avera is HOT, HOT, HOT! In more ways than one, but particularly in his awesome teaching abilities. He was fun, fair and full of knowledge. Prior to attending this G.E. required course, I was terrified and just thinking about it almost made me not want to go to college at all! Mr. Avera made this class interesting and easy to get through.

Mr. Avera tells you what to expect of him in the beginning. Don't disrespect him! or be a class clown! He takes it very seriously. He is a very good professor. He taught me a lot! From speaking in public to small details of what to do if the computer don't work. Remember to email yourself the presentation in case your usb don't work. Great Prof.!

grade is based on about 3 presentations (ppt & speech), about 2 quizzes and 2 reflective papers. Straight-forward with what he looks for and how he grades. Gives you a chance to make up a few points if you need it. Overall, a pretty good teacher. Take him if you can.

This teacher is awesome! This is my first Psychology course and it really inspired me and got me thinking. I find myself giving myself therapy and fixing a lot of problems I used to have.

Professor Avera is one of the most engaging faculty members on the campus. He not only motivates students to delve into a new field of interest, but he always makes sure to be supportive and helpful. He always lightens up the mood with one of his psychology stories, all of which apply to the course - absolutely a wonderful professor.

He's the best instructor I've ever had. Attending to his class will keep you awake all the time because it's so interesting! He's knowledgeable and fun.

His class is almost entirely based on a biweekly quiz off the in class lectures and chapters in the book. Although there was so skipping around, everything was very insightful and in depth for the amount of class time we had. He likes to tell stories off his past experience as a marriage consular and how it relates to human development. Great class

TAKE HIM FOR PUBLIC SPEAKING! Real low stress enviornment when compared to other teachers, and an interesting class (in my case), coz he tends to talk a whole lot about psychology and interesting things, when really, we should be up there doing public speakin presentations. Im not complaining though, he's a good guy. easy grader.

Overall a good teacher. Not really patient and a little condescending at times. Listen to what he wants and give him only that -- if you go above and give him more than he asked, he gets frustrated with you. Seems like he genuinely wants you to learn and pass the class.If you are an ENFP you might be sensitive to his tone sometimes.

I don't go to DeAnza I go to mission, he told everyone to rate him so here it goes: He isn't very friendly, but he's adorable. He can be intimidating but I think he's just grumpy. I like how he walks. He looks pretty tough.Hopefully I see him on campus, just so I can see him walk tough.

I dreaded public speaking and i almost dropped out because he was very intimidating at 1st, but i am so glad i did not. class was a breeze! Did only 3 speeches, and 3 tests i believe? He is funny, helpful, and tells you exactly what he wants. Good with returning emails. I would def take him again. He does walk kinda funny haha.

Intimidating but has a good personality. I failed his class because i felt like his expectations for presentations where to high. test where not as hard as i would expect but towards the end i FAILED . i recommend him if you like speaking in front of people by yourself.!! NO group presentations.

Mr. Avera is the best teacher I have ever take. His midterm were based on text, but some came from his lecture. Just attend class every meeting, and listen carefully, as he always repeat things which will come out in the exam. Easy A if you read the book thoroughly. And he likes people who are prepared. So be prepare for the worst when you come in.

If you ever wanted to use Powerpoint in a real life setting he guides you through it and encourages creativity. Mr Avera is the coolest teacher at De Anza! I'd take him for every class if I could! He uses real life examples which make everything so clear! This was the best class I've taken at De Anza! He's a great teacher and I learned a lot. Very chill. The tests every 2 weeks were cool because we didn't have to cram for a midterm/final. His public speaking class was not as hard as I expected. I think he gives less speeches than other teachers. You must def study and prepare for each speech to do well. Hes a little intimidating, but hes funny and makes things comforting. Some group work, and like 2 tests total. Notes are important so take them! I would take again!

Nice teacher that really helps connect the dots. Make sure to come to class since the stuff he lectures over is always on the test. Also make sure to stay ahead in the reading since he puts tricky questions that can only be found in the book on the test sometimes. First week is really laid back and he lets you out early a lot!

Reminds me of a gay Alec Baldwin (nothing wrong with that!) He just does. Cool guy. Easy A if you get on all lectures and actually listen to his hints. Totally relates lesson in real life scenarios. Makes class fun!

The book was helpful, but you don't need it. as long as you pay attention and attend all classes, then you'll be fine. although it is easy, the midterms are somewhat difficult cause it could really trick you. Great Teacher! Very helpful. Always relates concepts with real life applications so we can understand the concept better. Tests are mostly from the lectures so you HAVE to attend class, plus he gives you power point hand outs so you can follow along. Was never once bored in the class, he definitely keeps things interesting and relevant.

His class wasn't that hard but don't take his exams lightly. They were pretty hard at times. I got a b on almost every exam but i got an A.The book does help a lot. He's a pretty chill dude. He lets class out early. If he ever has a temper, it's usually because he forgot something, mad about our papers, or he doesn't have his glasses. Take class!

Do the work, shop up to class and you will do fine. His tests are very easy. He is picky about the speeches but he just wants you to do your best. He is truly amazing. I learned A LOT!

Enjoyed attending class, all my friends that I recommended him to enjoyed it as well. Funny, straightforward. Homework were power points on a certain topic that you chose and had to present, hence, "speech". Way more enjoyable than presenting an essay like other speech classes.

Took Professor Avera over the summer. Although it was a long lecture, he made it very enjoyable- it isn't dry or boring but humorous. Just attend his lectures (tests are based on what he teaches), do learnsmart stuff and a few article essays. It's really an easy and fun to get by.

From what I remember, it was a pretty easy class. Take notes, read book, study for the tests a little bit, and you pass. Problem was that he made se-xist jokes quite often, which was especially bothersome because of the subject he was supposed to be educated in/teaching objectively. He told jokes to get a laugh, didn't seem to matter the expense.

Honestly don't buy the book I never opened it bc his exams are strictly based off his lectures. Gives out 6 exams, but they are super easy and not comprehensive aka no final! Show up to class, take notes and memorize/learn them and you'll do very well. He gives the best lectures! Super funny guy!

I've taken 3 classes with Avera and can say from experience that your input the output. He tells you specifically that the tests (which make up most of your grade) are both from class & the readings. You can get in the B range from just attending, but reading isn't optional for an A. Ask him for study tips, he will gladly help!

My favorite thing about Mr. Avera is his humor. I always got a good laugh after each lecture, which made learning enjoyable. He applies real life applications to make concepts easier to understand. Make sure you attend class because most of the things he says will be on the exam. There are around 6 tests and an essay. 100% would take him again.

Exams are every two weeks, which is better because you study less info than a big final. He isn't one of those teachers you get cozy with, but he is a good professor who taught me a lot. I read the chapter assigned and took notes + studied the lecture notes and got As on the exams. All you need to know is said in class, so show up or you will fail.

He never take roll calls but all the questions and dates of exams are mentioned in classes, so attendance is mandatory. There will be pop in-class activities and extra credits as well. He is not easily accessible outside class and never reply to emails, you have to really pay attention to his announcement in class. Reading text is required for A

I LOVED THIS CLASS! Avera is incredibly knowledgeable and his wisdom blows me away, not to mention he is super funny! He is inspiring and definitely changed many of my outlooks on life. He does not take attendance and book is not required however, his tests are based off his (verbal not powerpoint) lectures so you must show up to class.

Attendance is a must though he is not making any roll call after the 1st lesson, it is because everything appear in the exams are mentioned in class. He explains everything super clearly, and there's only 1 paper. Exam's every 4 meetings&the exams are all multiple choices, 90% from textbook, so make sure you read&memorize everything. Not an easy A, don't take him if you take his class for GE. Helpful to ESL students, never take attendance but a lot of in class activities. Not much extra credits.

Very influential professor. If you sit in his lectures long enough you might just start talking like him. His lectures are very clear and it translates through his tests. Highly recommend this one.

If you're looking for funny and amazing lectures, Prof. Avera is the one!

Exams are once every two weeks and 90% is from the textbook. Pay attention on what he taught because he's teaching from the book, and he's trying to make it much easier to understand rather than reading straight from the book. He's a nice guy, if you don't understand something, you can ask him after class and he's going to answer it clearly to you.

The class is pretty much just a relapse of general psychology but with more magnification on the spectrum of diseases and disorders. The class itself is kind of boring but Avera is a good teacher with a big heart. He's kind of unorganized and the tests are right out of the book but it was still a good class. Really makes you evaluate your life.

Good for ESL students, you can easily understand what hes saying and you can ask questions or words you dont understand on the exam and he will give you its meaning. Paper is not too hard since the syllabus says min. 5 pages but he made it 2 pages minimum. He gave us 5 points extra credit and every 2 weeks theres quiz/exam just attend the class

There are exams every 2 weeks and everything on each exam mainly comes STRAIGHT from his lectures. Make sure to take notes and include the examples he gives. He will let you know which information will be on the exams. The readings are not difficult to understand. Barely any homework. He tries to make the class fun!

None of the lecture slides are available outside of class so I strongly recommend you to take notes, writing down what he writes on the board will be enough. Tests are based on both his lectures and the textbook. Professor Avera is passionate about what he is teaching and almost never gives out homework so his classes are definitely worth taking.

Had him for general psych this summer. One of the best teachers I've come across: he not only teaches psychology, but important life skills. From writing an official research paper to which online or verbal information you should trust, he's taught a lot of great things. 10/10 would take again!

One of the best professors I have had in my life. His lectures are interesting as they aren't conventional "straight out the textbook", and he makes them fun and more relatable with personal anecdotes and experiences. His class is extremely lecture heavy. If you are not listening or taking notes, you will most likely find the tests difficult. Accordingly, as long as you remain attentive and engaged, the tests should be straightforward and easy. I personally loved his lectures! One last thing-- there are some papers with strict expectations.

The lecture is informative, need to listen carefully. The exam is not easy. No extra credit . around 50 to 70 questions to complete in each homework. MH connect homework is very annoying .

I am a Psychology Major and I would recommend him for anyone he is FUNNY and amazing and loves his job!!!!!!

Professor Avera has genuinely been one of the best teachers I've ever had, even in only a quarter. He has really fun lectures that are super informative, do take the opportunity to write things down. He will often emphasize the more significant things, and teaches through a healthy variety of different methods that will leave any student fulfilled!

Work consisted of reading the chapters from the textbook and answering reading questions, and we had to take an exam after 2 chapters. The final exam only tested on the last 2 chapters. The work load was light, and his exams were super easy! His lectures are optional, but I suggest attending them to gain extra info that might be on his exams.

Avera's intro is really simple and straight forward. If you're unclear on any of the information, I highly recommend attending the lectures. I only went to one as my schedule didn't permit, but it was very informative. I didn't much care for the MH Connect textbook quizzes, but all-in-all the class is an easy A / A- if you try!

This professor is a solid choice. His lectures can be boring, but I didn't have to show up for most of the semester. He uses M-H Connect for textbook assignments and Canvas for chapter exams, which are open note.

I think Mr. Avera is a great professor! He is funny and loves sharing stories about his life. The workload for this class is reasonable but expect lots of reading each week and a time-consuming hw (quiz format) after each reading. The slides and readings help prepare you for the exams but he doesn't provide any study guides. Overall, nice guy

I learned a lot in this class and I enjoyed his teaching style. $90 textbook/workbook, practice tests for each chapter (u get all the points just for completion); informative and easy-to-follow lectures. Professor seems to be passionate about what he teaches. Taking this class made me realize how valuable a college education is tbh. I recommend it.

I honestly wish I worked harder in this class. Professor Avera is a great teacher and I'm glad I took the course! I definitely learned a lot. There's a good amount of reading and quizzes based on the reading. It's not difficult and you still learn a lot. It's a great class, I'd definitely take it again.

Amazing Prof! Teaches interesting things outside of the material as well. The only class I wish was longer than an hour. Easy to pay attention, the whole hour is usefully packed with information for upcoming tests, he does not ramble on about one topic for longer than is necessary. Also a bit humorous while teaching which helps with staying focused

Cool professor, I took him for psych during winter quarter (half zoom & half in-person). Lectures were super interesting and engaging, but its required to buy an online textbook w/ quizzes ($90). If you really want to learn psychology I definitely recommend taking this class but if you're looking for an easy GE class, maybe consider elsewhere.

He was recommended to me by a friend, I think he deserved that recommendation for sure. Sometimes I got a bit irritated if he didn't post the homework assignments early in the week (usually the due date would be the same). But emailing him will fix that. Make sure you read the textbook and take advantage of the recharge option for the homework.

I took this professor fall 2022 and it was fully zoom. I thought his lectures were great and easy to understand, super respectable. the tests reflect the assignments and lecture, so as long as you listen and do the work its doable. there isn't really a textbook, more of a place where we do work and it does cost a good some, but its reasonable.

He is an incredible professor. His lectures were thorough, and he presented them in an entertaining and engaging way. Those who are passionate about Psychology will love this class. I highly recommend taking this course.

Engaging lectures, but professor can be hard to reach. Textbook and assignments are substantial, so make use of resources like unstuckstudy to stay on top of the workload.
