Dr. Barkan is a very cool and nice professor. He's not always the clearest, but goes the extra mile to make sure that the class understands. The class is a great one in that you will start to think about cultural geography differently. I learned a lot in his class, and would recommend it to anyone. Also, just one cheap book for the semester.
This is one teacher who knows how to keep the class involved. There's no boring lecture. He rarely speaks for very long without asking a question, and he will wait until someone answers. This is a discussions class. Attendance is supposedly mandatory. Interesting films and discussion. Great teacher.
He is a cool professor. You will most likely make an A if you go to class. If you do not like to talk in class than do not take it. Difficult to understand at times.
Dr. Barkan gives exciting lectures and uses movies and documentaries. Be ready to discuss readings and these movies in class. Definitely recommend him.
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Barkan is SO passionate about the subject. The class is heavily based on discussion, which I liked. I'd definitely recommend the class.
Claims attendance is mandatory but it is not. You do not need to buy the text book to do well in the class. He will go over everything you need to know from it in class and all other reading are provided online. Very abstract class with no clear purpose. Science majors hate this class because the subject matter is neither factual nor testable.
Nice guy, very passionate and really wants you to learn something. This class was not what I thought it would be. All we covered was legal theory in emergencies. Exams were take home and fairly difficult due to the very abstract and difficult readings. Class was mostly discussion-you read the texts and discuss them in class, that's it.
Excellent professor! Barkan really cares about the material and his students. The readings can be abstract and challenging at times but worth it. One take home exam with challenging but fair questions. One major project for final.
Class wasn't too bad, he's not the best at explaining things but the concepts are so abstract it's easy to see how he can find it difficult. He does try to help if you show him you're putting in the effort though. Kind of quirky and awkward but pretty nice. Do the readings keep up in class.
Dr. Barkan is an intelligent, funny guy with a passion for geography. The class is discussion-based. He's not always the clearest (then again geography is very conceptual), but is very willing to help; he wants his students to understand the content. Four major essays/debates are the only grades, along with small daily grades.
Pretty good class. I went into the class thinking that it would be on different cultures within different areas/countries...totally wrong. Favorite class of the semester. LECTURE and READING based. Read the readings. He goes over them in class but read anyway. Grades are based on 3 essays. If you pay attention and read, you'll do good in the class.
2130H is pretty much wholly focused on economics, not human geography so much. I personally did not like the class or the professor. It was an 1hr and a half lecture that wasn't very interesting. At times, Barkan can be a little condescending and can come off as not caring about his students' opinions. However, it was a fairly easy class, read a lot
This is a class that will challenge the way you think. The focus of the class was democracy, although the topic may change in the future. The readings were manageable, and even if not having read them, he would discuss them during class and help dissect the ideas. Two essays and some short assignments. He loves teaching and encourages questions.
A very unusual approach to the subject of Cultural Geography, not at all what I expected. Not good, not bad, just kinda meh. The feedback on the tests is minimal, so there really isn't room for improvement. You either get it or you don't.
The class is not at all what I expected it to be. The material is very abstract and Barkan is unable to really explain it in a way students understand. He realizes this, but has no idea how to fix it, no matter how hard he tries because he does really care. Readings will be necessary to do well on tests. Avoid class if you can.
The professor is really nice and readily available to help if you need it, but there are a lot of readings. There aren't a lot of assignments which is nice, but the content is not what i was expecting and is very abstract. I felt like there was too much jumbledconfusing discussion rather than concrete teaching.
He's really cool. The class is fairly interesting and he's definitely very passionate about the subject matter. He's pretty funny and likable, and the class is not hard at all. There are a bunch of quizzes but they're just direct answers from the reading so ctrl+F it and you're fine. There's a paper or two but they're no big deal. Recommended!!
He keeps the lecture engaging. There is a lot of reading to do, but no in class quizzes. Two take home essays as exams. There is no text book, but it is necessary to read the two books he assigns.
He is very passionate about his subject area and really tries to get his students to understand the different aspects of cultural geography. If you like talk in class and have a meaningful discussion then this class is for you. He doesn't take attendance, so you can skip as well. No textbook either. Overall would recommend this class.
No books are required for the class, there are just articles to read every week. Attendance isn't mandatory, but useful for pop points a few times. He is always willing to meet with you too! Quizzes online over the readings are straight from readings and there are 2-3 papers total. Confusing topic but he does his best to explain! Great professor!
Dr. Barkan teaches the hardest intro class I have ever taken. Assigns very long readings and lectures on the most abstract concepts in class. 3 papers compile your grade and he grades every one as if you are studying to receive a masters in cultural geography. Not interesting in the slightest. Acts like his class is easy but grades otherwise.
Barkan is super cool and funny, and there were only like 3 short papers assigned, but there is daily reading. While it's not required (and the reading is long and boring) he will make you feel SO guilty for not reading it. He was kind of confusing with what he was teaching, but it was very conceptual. Def take him for multi-cult credit.
Barkan is passionate about what he teaches, however he does not know how to teach. I came to class, took notes, asked questions, and still felt like I never really understood anything. He doesn't take attendance but knows when you skip. A little condescending. Uses powerpoint slides so lectures are a million times worse. I wouldn't take again.
I highly recommend not taking this class (1103)... the material is so abstract for an 1100 level course. His grading is tough, and he doesn't give much slack for not understanding the material. I'm normally an A student about to walk out of this class hopefully with a B... If you do end up taking this class, read the material...
Yea the class is a bit abstract but he is a really good professor. I'm not gonna have an A but I didn't put in the work for an A. Basically 3 main papers and a couple online quizzes. He is a good guy so that's why I enjoyed going to class
He was always funny in class, but the 3 required papers were difficult. The readings are abstract, but theyre not impossible to understand. He really wants students to learn, and he is always willing to meet with you if you have questions. Also, dont use your phone or sleep in class! Hell call you out on it.
Barkan is a nice dude, I went into this class thinking it would be like the culture unit from Human Geography. It wasn't. Don't go into this class thinking it'll be bs because Barkan has a really interesting class. Beware the TA, grades harder than prof. Only 2 essay exams and the final. Would take again.
I really enjoyed Dr. Barkan's course! he's a pretty engaging lecturer and he makes the class interactive and enjoyable. however, if you don't consider yourself a great writer, i recommend that you take another course since all his tests are take home essays. overall, he's a really cool guy and i would definitely take it again!
Dr. Barkan is incredibly passionate about what he teaches. I took this class as a gen. elect. my freshman year (Fall 2016), and it was so intriguing/relevant that what I learned continues to arise in conversation and has changed the way I view cultural events. You're only graded on 3 essays (they're not bad) which are based on lecture/readings.
Dr. Barkan's teaching style is very abstract and really doesn't clearly explain concepts the way that most students would understand. His lectures seem interesting but can get dull and complicated. The readings are central to the papers and quizzes and they can be VERY lengthy. Do the readings and try to understand anything you can.
Barkan doesn't explain his lectures in a way students understand. If you love listening to boring lectures that make you wanna sleep then this is the class for you. If you like me and hate boring teachers and hate papers for test then don't take this class.
I absolutely loved Dr. Barkans class. He is incredible passionate about what he studies. If just a handful of students participate in discussion and allow him to bounce off your ideas, he'll teach you some pretty cool things. Only grades are written papers in response to class readings, he is a fair grader and will help you as long as you try.
Dr. Barkan is very passionate and animated when he gives lectures, which makes them easy to follow even if you don't find the particular topic that day interesting (they're typically interesting, thankfully). He's really caring and doesn't want any of his students to fall behind, and makes it a point to reach out to everyone. Would take him again!
When attendance is low, gives a daily assignment (graded on completion) that can't be made up. Basically all you need to do to do well in this class is show up and participate in the class discussion. He is not a tough grader.
Lectures are dumb and confusing. If you do not go to class he will grade your essays tougher than usual. Not a hard class to do well in, just go to class.
Barkan was very enthusiastic about what he was teaching but it is very difficult to concentrate throughout the lecture. He gives pop quizzes/assignments that are graded, but if you miss any of them he will never give you the chance to make it up. Even if you have an excuse.
I took Barkan's cultural geography class. He was very enthusiastic and encourages you to be as well. He cares about helping you and will during his office hours if you show him you care about the subject and doing well.
I loved this professor in Intro to Geography and this class. Lectures are mostly him talking, no powerpoint, so have your note-taking game on point. But he's clearly really interested in what he does and he is invested in seeing you succeed. Ask some well-thought out questions to impress him and you'll be golden.
If you are looking for an easy A with no effort, this is NOT the class to take. This class has a ton of reading, usually 2 -3 per week. Also, the class is not the typical geography class of memorizing facts and maps, but rather it involves "critical thinking." Unless you are super interested in geography and in-class discussions, I would pass.
Professor Barkan is constantly enthusiastic and excited about the material he's learning. An A is very achievable given you put in the necessary amount of work, and classes are fun since Professor Barkan facilitates genuinely engaging in-class discussions.
This was an odd class, but easy all the same. He throws big words around during lecture and most times never goes off of the slides. The most telling thing about this class was how the first day of lecture the class was packed, but by the end of the semester maybe 5 people were in class. Pretty easy tests, one project, lots of dad jokes.
Dr. Barkan's class was one of the worst classes I've been in at UGA so far. I'm a third-year student taking this class to finish up some loose credits and his class was hands down sucky. The amount of reading and few grades are not fun for this intro-level class. I learned almost nothing in his class and would not reccomend it.
The semester long project was graded really hard and brought me down a letter grade, which sucked but it is what it is. Go to class and read the textbook and you should be fine on the tests.
Barkan does not focus on the grade of the class and just wants students to learn. There were not many assignments in the class, and the readings were not actually required. Very interesting style of lecturing though!
I thought Barkan was great. The class was very easy overall. Our quizzes and tests were online. We had a handful of quizzes and only 2 tests which were the midterm and final. He offered Zoom meetings in case you couldn't make it to class in person which was very considerate. Great guy.
Easy class just very boring lectures
Makes the class easy if you do what he says. Lectures can be a little boring. Nice guy. Definitely recommended for intro level geography classes.
He's an awful lecturer (just talks and talks), however if you study all the notes you'll be fine. He does repeat slides and notes a lot on ELC, so make sure you look up if you already have that info by searching in your notes. Tests come straight from powerpoint slides and textbook (but you can just skim the textbook + take notes and be fine).
This is a great culture credit class. He can be boring, but you can tell that he loves his job. Attendance is not mandatory, and he posts all of the power points on ELC, so you don't really have to go to class. All quizzes and exams are online and easy.
Barkan is a nice professor who cares about his field, but lectures can be a boring at times and often don't translate to the test. Test and quiz questions are worded in a manner to trip you up but the information comes straight from the textbook so keep up with readings and you'll do great.
This is probably the easiest world culture credit offered at UGA. Definitely take this class if you need the credit. Most free A+ of all time.
The class itself is very easy. Be ready to read the textbook and you will be fine. The lectures from Barkan are very boring as he just goes on and on. He clearly is passionate about what he does, the lectures are just unbearable.
Attendance is not required at all, however, I would recommend having the textbook as it comes in handy for quizzes and tests. The professor is really caring and passionate about what he teaches, however, the lectures can be extremely boring. The quizzes and tests however are extremely easy and I would recommend taking his class!
Literally easiest class ever, I stopped going after the first test and still ended the class with a 98.
Was a very easy lecture class.
Professor Barkan made this class enjoyable. Lectures can be long and boring, but you can tell that he is passionate about the material. He cares about his students and tries to learn students names even though it was a large lecture class. The tests and map quizzes were open note and easy if you read the textbook and paid attention to the lectures.
This is an easy class to take because the tests are open note and online. Take this class if you're looking for an easy A without any effort. If you do attend, Prof Barkan is a funny guy who puts a lot of effort into his lectures.
I stopped attending this class mid-way through the year and still made an A. Definitely recommend if you're looking for an easy class for a requirement. Don't recommend if you actually want to learn because his lectures are extremely confusing.
I stopped attending this class mid-way through the year and still made an A. Definitely recommend if you're looking for an easy class for a requirement. Don't recommend if you actually want to learn because his lectures are extremely confusing.
Attendance was not mandatory. Tests were on ELC, without lockdown browser, and could be taken anywhere. There were also map quizzes which were pretty easy but a lot of the answers were only in the textbook, so you need to search a little bit. Final is also online and can be taken anywhere.
Tests were on online and could be taken anywhere. There were also map quizzes which were pretty easy and help boost your grade if you did bad on a test. He posts the slides from class on ELC. Also, really nice professor. One time I didnt go to class, so I missed an in class assignment but he still let me get full credit.
He started giving random assignments on random days at the beginning of the semester to encourage attendance and then the TA would grade harshly/weirdly on those assignments. Lectures are long and boring and test questions can be confusing but an easier world culture credit than some of the other classes.
More of a theorist than a lecturer. Personally not my style of lecture and classes were boring. There were map quizzes which had nothing to do with what we learned in class but they came straight out of the textbooks. Lecture notes are posted on the ELC. Tests are open note and relatively easy because the questions come straight from the textbook
Super sweet professor, accessible over email. Lectures were hard to follow and personally not my style. Lectures are posted online, attendance not mandatory but watch out for random in-class assignments. Assignments were all pretty easy, tests are online w/ no lockdown and questions pulled from book and lectures, easy grader.
Pretty easy class. You don't need to go to class because all the tests and quizzes are online. It does help but most of the content can be found in the textbook. Definitely recommend!
Free A boring lectures
Dr.Barkan is super nice and clearly cares about his class. Show up to class once in a while just out of courtesy to him and it is an easy A. (if no-one shows up he will start to make class difficult with in-class assignments) Tests are online no lockdown. Super easy A and very nice and educated prof. 10000/10 would recommend to anyone and everyone!
Couple exams and a couple quizzes. Also some random in class activities for a small portion of quiz section grade. Went to class 3 times the whole semester. Tests are on ELC but he puts a password on it so you have to come to class to take it. open note open book. Easy class just annoying you have to be in class to take an online test.
I left a detailed review but it got deleted. The worst professor i have ever had at Georgia. This was the worst class I have ever been a part of. I would not recommend you take this class at all.
Attendance not required; final exam was so easy it's like writing your name. Watch out for in-class assignments even though we only had 2 for the entire year and I missed them both. Overall, not a bad professor and an easy A.
Not bad at all and an easy A. There are in-class assignments and it's impossible to wake up at 8 am. Besides that, all the quizzes and tests are online, and easy if you do study guides. 90% of the material is in the textbook, so you lowkey have to get it. I don't regret taking this class for my WOC credit, but I don't think I would do it again...
A good guy, very conceptual in nature, thought it would be mostly maps but it was a lot more complex but still easy to understand. You can tell he cares about the course and is very invested in the topic, grades are mostly take home map quizzes and 3 exams 2 of which were taken online, all open note and book. here and there in class assignments
His class was boring the few times I went. He did random class assignments to promote attendance, which was annoying. 75% percent of the grade was based on two tests and a final, but they were super easy. This class is boring, but is a super easy A. His map quizzes are also super easy, and missing the in class assignments barely affect your grade.
I got an A+ without buying the textbook or going to class so do with that what you will. Very easy class but super long open note, open internet test and quizzes. This class requires little effort but a decent amount of time. I wouldn't take again just cause it was not my type of class but a nice easy WLC class.
I absolutely adored Dr Barkan's geography lecture. It was the one 8am class I actually attended. The lectures were not the most interesting, but Dr Barkan is passionate and easy to follow. He is also the only professor I've had who bothered to learn my name. The exams are open note and browser, even the final.
This class was unbearable to attend. The lectures are extremely heavy winded and honestly pretty crazy. For example, he says he and his kids suffer from climate anxiety. Lots of people say easy A, i didn't think it was. Tests were in person and not super easy. He gives awful readings that the tests are over. He's nice, but I'd take someone else.
Textbook is required, I never did the readings (sorry barkan!) but I did good in the class. Tests are open internet, open notes, open book. It is very lecture heavy and honestly not what I thought I'd be learning in a geography class, but he's really passionate about it. If you go to class and do the map quizzes, you will do great. He is very nice.
Attendance isn't required but recommended. He doesn't accept late work so if you miss a class he gives a worksheet in it'll hurt your grade. Tests are open book, but the questions are based on the lectures & readings so you can't just look everything up and expect an A. There's so much information covered I found it difficult to prepare for exams
You can tell Professor Barkan is very passionate about what he teaches. Quizzes/tests are online and open note/book, including all of his exams. However, he was talking about changing that but hes not sure yet. The lectures are very long winded so if you don't like it don't do the 8am like I did. Parts of it seemed to drag and was a little boring.
VERY EASY. Attendance is kinda mandatory because map quizzes(6 total, can take at home) and 2 in-class worksheets - 25%. easy but if you miss one of the few classes he gives an assignment, messes you up Tests are open browser. EASY to get at least an A- in this class. The class was 8am. If getting up early is not a problem TAKE HIM. TakeHome Final
Very easy class. I missed one of the two in class assignments and still managed to get an A. Exams are open internet, but long. Map quizzes are also easy and come straight from the textbook. Highly recommend even though it is a 8am since you don't really need to go. Lectures are long and boring, but he is very passionate about the class.
Barkan is awesome. Super caring and kind professor. Engaging and interesting lectures, esp for an 8am. Attendance not necessary but helpful to go so you can get good notes. open note & book exams with study guide. exams are long but not too hard if you have the info. he did mention changing up exams though. map quizzes and participation were easy
Take Dr. Barkan. His class is super easy and he keeps his lectures engaging. The class is a little abstract sometimes, but the exams are easy because they are open note/book. The final can also be taken off campus which is nice. Overall, the class is really manageable and isn't really challenging at all.
Barkan is the nicest professor ever! He really tries to get to know students' names, which is rare in a big lecture class. He does just lecture the entire class, which, if that's your thing, I would definitely take him. You only have two exams and a final during the semester for big grades, but they are open-note. Beware of in-class assignments!
Barkan has totally changed his class. Tests are open note but are in-person, so you have to take in upwards of 30 papers to have everything you need. Keep in mind this is a big lecture class, so you have to manage your laptop and all of your study material in a small area. Attendance is essentially mandatory because of several in-class assignments.
A very nice guy but the most unorganized professor I have ever had in my life. His exams are the hardest thing in the world. I thought this would be an easy A but its far from it. So much content on the exams, super unorganized powerpoints, and such boring lectures. Do not take this if you are looking for an easy A.
Barkan is a nice guy, unfortunately, he's an awful professor. He's extremely disorganized and has no clue how to teach a class. Exams are based on extremely difficult questions due to them being open note. We are expected to reference each portion while packed into a lecture hall without any space to move. Exams are not passable without notes.
Man, he's the sweetest guy, but lectures are so so boring. Tests are open note (physical papers only, lockdown browser) but we're expected to know every little detail about everything, causing tests to be extremely hard. Take human geography if you can.
Barkan is very disorganized and hasn't quite figured out how to teach a class. He is super smart and friendly, but exams are extremely narrow which rewards the people looking up answers on their phone and hurts those that do not cheat. His slides are really confusing, and he tends to ramble while lecturing. Super sweet guy, but not a good proff.
Classes are SO boring and there's like 4 random in class assignments throughout the semester. Tests are open note and the final is online.
He switched from exams being online in class to those with lockdown browser. he is very nice but will get side tracked every single lecture and its hard to follow along in class. the tests would be impossible if he didnt let us print out our notes for them. he will also randomly do in class assignments so you have to go. he is a genuine person tho
Prof Barkan cares a lot about his students and the content of the class. Exams have some really specific geographic locations but he started helping by telling us questions after the first one was very dfifficult. Last exam take home. I really enjoyed the lectures and this is a class that you can choose to learn a lot in
Mr. Barkan is a great professor. There are a lot of in class assignments, so don't miss class. The exams are open note, but you have to be extra prepared, and make sure to do the readings outside of class because he usually doesn't go over them in class. Other than that you can make it out with an A just don't screw up on the first test.
Barkan is a good teacher, but he goes off on crazy long tangents that aren't related to the class. The tests are a little difficult- he gives a study guide that helps a TON, but he doesn't go over like half of the stuff in class. attendance is not mandatory, so I didn't go after the first exam and filled out the study guide and I did well.
I thought Barkan was pretty funny and the material he went over was engaging. Some of the bad reviews on here are probably just about his quizzes or when he gives out attendance assignments, but honestly those are pretty simple (maybe a little tedious at times). Easy class, good guy.
Don't take this class if you're looking for an easy World Language & Global Credit Class. Random assignments throughout the class so attendance is important. Tests are open note but only on paper your bring in for the tests, so hat your bring in must be SO detailed. The final is open note and online. Take an easier class!
Barkan truly cares about his students and understands that most are taking it for the WLC credit. He is a silly guy that makes lectures engaging, but readings are heavy. This said-- he tells you the material on the test and are basically straight from the textbook. Open note test, final is not cumulative and is online at home. You'll survive.
random assignments in class, so attendance is kind of mandatory. exams are open note, and the final is online. 0 rounding. .02 and he won't budge. that being said this class is a joke becuse of how easy it is to bend the parameters around assignments/exams. take for an easy A, but he is an insufferable person. if he's married, feel bad for the wife
Easy class if you put in the effort. Few quizzes throughout the semester, in-class assignments so attendance is mandatory. 3 exams, 2 in person with lockdown browser and final was take home without lockdown browser.
He's definitely a great professor especially if youre a Geog major/minor otherwise I'd try to find someone else. Hes super passionate about geography and his class is more historically context based than map based. In class assignments are basically our "pop quizzes" so be in class or you'll get a 0! Overall super nice, and understanding!
Good professor, cares about his students. First semester that he did in-person tests via lockdown browser and it did not go great. You were allowed a study guide to look through, which is not helpful in a filled 300-person auditorium. Final was take home, so some slack there. He does little random in-class assignments, so attendance is mandatory.
I would not take Barkan again! He is sooooo lecture heavy and his lectures are extremely boring. His tests are open notes but are insanely difficult even with notes. He says attendance isn't mandatory, but if you miss an in class assignment then you get a 0 no matter the excuse. Overall just an extremely boring and annoying class.
Dr. Barkan was overall an amazing professor. On the first day, he made it a point to try to learn everyone's names and he is pretty good at recalling them now. The lectures are so informational and he is genuinely so passionate about what he teaches. There is a lot of reading and he asks a lot of questions, so try to participate.
TAKE THIS COURSE! If you show up you will get a 100 on the tests. Easiest class ever!
His class is very lecture heavy but it is still worth it. The assignments aren't terrible and he is very understanding about absences. I would definitely take if possible.
His class is pretty boring and lecture heavy, but in order to get students to show up he gives out the test answers in class. He'll also work with you if you need to miss and make up in-class assignments. Overall he tries interacting with students and as long as you show up it's an easy A.
Super cool guy, he gives you the answers to the tests in class. Literally all of them, even the final. He has about 9 or 10 in class assignments which are about half your grade. He will sometimes tell you when they are but best bet is to just go to class. Don't take if you're gonna skip every class
If you show up you are guaranteed an A. He gives you test answers in class, and has a few in class assignments that he won't tell you about but are a significant proportion of you grade. He's a cool professor, class is pretty interesting and he's passionate about it.
Easiest Class Ever!!!! There are in class assignments which at 8am but all the other days were amazing. He literally gave us the most important test review questions and answers so there is no way possible not to get a 100 in the class! Highly recommend for DE!!!
