While he is a very intelligent professor I found myself bored to death with him for the entire term. The class was mostly all lecture for 2 hours and I couldn't keep my motivation because of his not so great public speaking skills.
very clear and lecture topics intresting
I SLACKED OFF ON HALF OF THE TERM. THERE ARE ONLY 2 TEST AND NO WRITING PAPERS. I LOVED IT. THE TEST IS PRETTY MUCH 98% OFF FROM THE LECTURE. IF YOU TAKE GOOD NOTES AND READ FROM THE BOOK FOR MORE INSIGHT YOU SHOULD GET AN A EASILY. I REALLY LOVED THE CLASS. I HAD LOTS OF STIMULATION AND LEARNED A BUNCH. HE OFFER EXTRA CREDIT TOO VERY FUN.
Josh is an amazing professor. He gives interesting lectures that are organized. If you go to class and take notes on the lectures, you will do well in the course. Wonderful professor - highly recommended!
Joshua Bass was very knowledgeable, which made it easier to listen. The midterm and final wasn't too bad. Multiple choice and short essay. If you go to class and pay attention, you will do fine.
Seems very knowledgeable, but could definitely afford to work on keeping his lectures stimulating. Found it hard to be motivated to go to class every day and sit through a whole lecture, but I did get some good info. from the class. Seems charasmatic enough.
good class good lectures. gave me a better understanding of our society.
He is a great teacher if you can handle lectures!!! The information he gives is interesting and easy to understand.
Dr. Bass taught my intro course, and is responsible for getting me interested in sociology, be that good, or bad.
This professor is okay. He has a great sense of humor and knows his stuff, but sometimes it's hard to sit through two hours.
Very good class. Lectures are clear and easy to follow. It take him too long to return papers but he is still a very good professor.
YOU HAVE TO ATTEND EVERY CLASS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON! HE LECTURES THE WHOLE CLASS PERIOD AND YOU MUST TAKE ALL NOTES TO PASS. THE TEST ARE ALL BASED ON VOCABULARY WORDS & TERMS. IF YOU CAN MEMORIZE TERMS, & REGURGITATE IT ONTO A TEST, THEN THIS CLASS IS FOR YOU. OTHERWISE TRY ANOTHER TEACHER FOR YOUR OWN SAKE!

Run for the hills! This guy is super boring! Good Luck staying awake
Class was easy to follow and engaging. It would be hard to pass if you didn't come to class, but as long as you follow along and take good notes you will have no problem on the tests. Grading was fair and topics were interesting. Very good professor!! I will absolutely take another class from him.
Bass was a great teacher very interesting and knows the material. He has 2 exams both are have hand full of essay questions and the rest multiple choice. As long as you go to class and pay attention you should do fine on the exams. 3 in class assignments. Class is interesting and not hard but wouldn't call it easy.
Professor Bass is a great professor. As long as you go to class and listen, you'll get a passing grade and learn the material. The tests are a blend of multiple choice and essay questions and he gives a few assignments throughout the term. I highly recommend him.
This was one of the best classes I've had in a long time at PSU. Finally a class with a teacher who lectures well enough that by attending class and taking decent notes you can easily get a good grade. This professor was well organized and witty. GREAT CLASS!
Engaging, respectful of others' views, and very clear about what he wanted on assignments/what would be on the exams. Would take another class from him again.
very good professor. He's funny, respectful & super nice. I learned a lot, the class was very interesting & well organized.
very nice guy..did bad in his class because i thought it was easy in the begginning ..last half and tests are tricky ..so make sure you read and show up to class..usually left wondering what your hw grade is because he never passes it back
entire class consisted of going over definitions. You dont get assignments back and tests take forever to be returned. He also doesnt return emails.
does not count attendance. covers material in depth, stays on track, few tests, heavy on quality not quantity. answers questions with clarity and authority.
Take this teacher if you get a chance! He knows his stuff and is passionate about teaching. It does take awhile to get assignments back but his lectures are awesome, just do the reading and come to class!
Pretty good class, sometimes he repeats certain jokes and his humor gets a little old after a while. His lectures are pretty straightforward, unfortunately the bulk of the class involves memorization of terminology. He also only passed back the midterm, not the essays and assignments, so it was difficult to gauge where your grade was at.
josh is great! take this class, it's great. i learned so much. his lectures are organized and clear and he covers a lot. he doesn't hand back work which is annoying but overall he was great!
Professor Bass is probably the best professor I've had at PSU to date. His minorities class was superb. Well organized lectures that covered the same material that was on the tests.
His lectures are long and you need to attend every class in order to pass the exams. He does not return materials, but does return the midterm four weeks later. There are only two exams miderm and final. You can pass the class if u attend every class, take notes, understand the notes, and memorize the entire notes and trust me they are long.
Professor Bass is amazing. I loved taking Intro to Soc, Minorities, and Intimacy and Marriage with him. He has a unique style of teaching and only wants what is best for his students. Go in and talk to him and he will do his best to help! Great guy!
He is a very animated teacher and interesting to listen to; you do have to go to class and take notes though, so if you are the kind of person that only comes for tests, you won't pass most likely
Joshua Bass is a great teacher! His lectures were interesting, and tests were from his lectures. Great class.
I loved this professor! He's fun and interesting. I would recommend his class to anyone!
I took his class for Intro to Soc and it was my favorite class I have ever taken, and I am now majoring. Bass is an excellent professor. He is hilarious, and passionate about his subject. I DO recommend him.
Really great, engaging professor. He's more than willing to help out and he makes every class fun and interesting. Recommended!
Funny and engaging but subject tends to be dull and extremely repetitive. I feel like I'm hearing slightly different versions of the same lecture.
Joshua is a fantastic teacher. He is hilarious, and displays his knowledge topics and passion for teaching every day. He is an advocate for human and civil rights, and fills lectures with interesting and useful info. Recommend!!!!
Lectures get repetitive, but the material was interesting and he's pretty funny. Apparently I'm the only person who thinks he's hot?
Love him. He was such a good teacher all term, when he talks about some topics he sounds like a comedian. His lectures are basically the reading and you can choose to read or listen to his letures
Joshua Bass is my favorite professor ever. His lectures are often more interesting than watching a summer blockbuster. Even tests and assignments are fun because instead of covering mundane material Josh gets students thinking like a sociologist so answers come naturally. If you're a sociology major, a forensics major or a transient- take his class.
Josh is an awesome professor, very engaging and gets good classroom discussion going. Some lectures are a bit repetitive, and he takes forever to get papers/tests graded and handed back. But overall, he is a great professor and I'd take from him again!
Josh is one of the greatest professors I've ever had. The classes are interesting, and I have no problem listening to lectures for two hours. Very engaging and funny. Papers and tests are easy as long as you attend class and take notes. Plus, he offers almost 10% of the grade in extra credit assignments! Oh yes, and he's quite easy on the eyes :)
He's okay, I got very bored very easy. My biggest issue was with the midterm, we took it in week 5 and didn't get it back until week 10! That made a lot of people panic for their grades.
Bass was a very great professor! I recommend him to anyone. Very engaging, very interested in his job, and very willing to help students understand the material. He was a bit slow at returning papers but I think he had some personal issues this term which was understandable. GREAT PROF! MUST TAKE! Thanks Bass!!
The class was boring just because it was a little too early for me. He's funny, but very late in returning papers. I was freaking out about my final exam because he didn't give me my midterm back in a reasonable amount of time. However, I'd rather be graded fairly than quickly. Didn't do as well as I hoped, but I'll tolerate it.
Absolutley amazing...every class was a learning experience and he added charisma to every lecture. The humor he adds to lectures help with remembering examples and keep you engadged.
Knowledgeable and excited about the topic (Soc in Film). He's an engaging lecturer, good reading packet and books. But he tends to let student discussions deteriorate into pointlessness. Also, has a handful of students he calls on regularly and will not call on me no matter how high or how long my hand is raised.
GREAT professor, notice all the reviews? he makes the class interesting. You can basically either go to class and not read the book, or dont go and read the book. go to class, hes good.
Josh is a talented and entertaining teacher. He can really take a complex concept and make it comprehensible. And he has a wicked sense of humor.
FANTASTIC lectures. Pretty disorganized. Don't expect your work back in a timely fashion. Totally worth it. He rocks.
Awesome sense of humor, very intelligent, wonderful teacher. Very cute too!
I wasn't even sure what sociology was when I signed up at the last minute, but he definitely made it crystal clear. One of the best classes I had at PSU. I was actually eager to come to class because his lectures were so entertaining. Never had that happen with any instructor.
Straightforward although sporadic assignments, open-minded about subject matter (allowed for creativity), gives good feedback; word/definition lecture format, very direct/clear (almost too much cookie-cutter of the book); encouraging of class discussions; tests matched lectures almost too precisely (easy, in any case);extremely friendly and helpful
A very good speaker. You'd have to work to come out of that class without knowing anything. A little untimely on return of papers, but not too big of a deal. I'd highly recommend him, even if you have no interest in sociology.
This class should be called McDonaldization of Society- not Soc of US Society. The material seems too simplistic and doesn't require any deep thought. Easy class, Josh is nice and an entertaining prof but doesn't ask you to think. If you're an above average student you'll be frustrated by the elementary depth of thought.
Dude, this guy was awesome. I learned so much about American Society and since I was never extremely interested in Sociology I was surprised to enjoy it because he put so much passion and energy into his lectures. You couldn't help but pay attention. Fairly easy assignment and mostly multiple choice tests. A+
Fascinating lectures. Class time flies by and I looked forward to it every time. Show up, take good notes, do all the assignments, and you'll do great. Highly recommend this teacher! Hope to take a class from him again.
Dr. Bass kept the lectures very interesting and fun. He was always prepared. He gives a study guide with all the terms that could be covered on the tests. There was one weekly assignment (usually a paper), and they were all returned in a somewhat timely manner. My only complaint is that he didn't post grades online. I definitely recommend him.
Josh is a great lecturer, but lets pointless comments take up too much class time. His class on Minorities was great, the USSociety class not. He's an adjunct, so he gets stuck with huge lecture hall type stuff, which is too bad. But that means he's grading the papers and he's fair/leaves comments, though takes FOREVER to get stuff back. Recommend!
Clear and easy-to-understand lectures for people just starting out in sociology. Bass is funny, helpful, nice, and pretty easy. If you do the assignments and take good notes, you'll be home free. Some of the assignments are interesting as well--they get you thinking.
Takes time to answer everyone's questions in-depth. He's funny, but repeats jokes. I didn't have to read the book much, but it helps. Lots of small 2pg/double-space papers that are pretty easy- just follow criteria. No peer interaction, just lecture, which I prefer anyway.
He's alright, I guess!
Clear lectures, good speaker. This is the 3rd class i've taken from him... If you come to class and follow your notes you'll get an A. He's slow at returning assignments... but you don't really need to read the book which is nice and saves $$. Recommended
Josh makes me want to come to class. He is sarcastic and lovably cynical-necessary for the tough subjects he teaches. He always makes me laugh. Doesn't try to surprise you on tests or quizzes, he just wants you to really think about stuff. My fave.
Great Professor. Funny, nice, however didnt connect to the class as much as i would have liked.
Easy 2-page assignment each week, drop lowest grade. 1 midterm, final. multiple choice vocabulary tests. takes FOREVER to return assignments, but very easy grader on them.
If you go to class and take notes, this class is easy. Josh gives great lectures that are also very interesting. His weekly assignments get you connecting ideas from class to real world examples. Great way to make you understand the concepts. Overall, great professor that doesn't make his classes boring.
Josh Bass was a good teacher, I had him for minorities. His class very interesting and he held my attention. Attendance wasnt mandatory and he mostly just skribbled on the black board but he did it well. His tests were pretty difficult though, he had to curve one of them because the class average was pretty low. So be prepared! But you can do well!
Love Love Love Josh! I've taken multiple classes with him and keep coming back for more. Very charismatic and knowledgeable. He is clearly passionate about what he does. Lectures are very interesting. Come to class and take notes and you'll be fine. I highly recommend him!
His lectures were excellent. Very clear, great bullet points, theoretically rich. Class time was incredibly valuable...BUT...He could really use a personal assistant. I never saw much of my work after handing it in, and he literally lost my final paper.
Great teacher! Really enjoyed his lectures. Funny, and engaging. It was one of those classes that i didn't want to miss.
Writes everything on the chalkboard which makes note-taking a breeze. Weekly assignments are relevant to the lectures. Tests are pretty easy and offers LOADS of extra credit. I like his shirts.
Awesome teacher. Laid everything out exactly how it was and if you didn't understand, he gave you examples and you got it. Wrote everything on the board, super helpful. Tests were harder, but if you study and go to class you'll do well.
Josh is an awesome professor! The only thing I didn't like was the exams, which were fairly hard. His lectures were pretty interesting, but I wish he had the notes available online since he is fast. Weekly assignments were fairly easy, but be prepared to be as detailed as possible while writing them. I would definitely take a class with him again!
Positives: Very clear. Excellent lecturer. Highly recommend. Negatives: Average midterm grade, low C. Midterm test too long for class time. Few people finished on time. Took him till the end of term to finally get us our midterms back, leaving us wondering. But in fairness, still supplied extra credit. Good teacher.
Midterm and final were difficult but he does give clues to possible questions on the exams. Offers EC if you stumble on the midterm. Enjoyed his class.
For an intro level Sociology class I took for fun I enjoyed it. The weekly projects weren't very hard, and neither were the midterm or final. His lectures were interesting and overall it was a great class!
I really enjoyed this class. Josh is a very engaging teacher and I really learned a lot from this class. He writes everything on the board so taking notes is easy. Exams were pretty tough but he gives good study guides and really good "hints" about what questions might be on the exams. Offered a good amount of extra credit.
I really loved this class and Josh. He was a great teacher, knows a ton about the subject and keeps it interesting. He is witty and the lectures were great. The tests were a little challenging but if you read and come to class you will do fine.
Writes everything on the board, so sit close to the front. Very easy to understand, and answers questions thoughtfully and keeps the content current. (used Occupy Portland in a lot of discussions) Weekly assignments easy if you pay enough attention in the class and use the book for what it's meant for. Will be taking another one of his classes.
Joshua is extremely relaxed, knowledgeable, and hilarious! Tests were easy, books were supplemental though Q's appeared on test you could infer answer from lecture notes, and had a huge amount of extra credit (20 assign. + 5 per test). Was a little too relaxed which caused us to miss 2-3 weeks of information.
I love going to his class, he makes the material easy to understand and simply enjoyable.
Professor Bass's class is amazing! He uses clear board notes, and goes at a reasonable pace to make sure everybody understands. He has a great sense of humor and keeps you engaged in the material the whole time.Show up to class and read the chapters and tests will be easy. The weekly assignments were 2 page papers, and they were fun to do.
He makes the class really enjoyable. It's fun and easy to understand. The weekly assignments are pretty easy to do and don't take too much time. He writes everything on the board which is really nice. Definitely recommend him!
Not a helpful professor.
Love it! Writes everything on Chalkboard, sometimes I dont pay attention cuz its a 9am class. Overall Great Class!
I like the class. He writes everything he says on the chalkboard. However, I believe the tests were a bit complicated. On the midterm it was half multiple choice and half write up, & I seemed to do better on the write up. On the final, it was all multiple choice which was difficult. The study guide was a bit disorganized. But good class!
This professor increased my interest and knowledge on the subject. Lectures and class discussions were great and the reading was interesting. He is clear in his expectations and the papers were thought provoking and fun to write. If you come to class, take notes and do the reading, you will be prepared for the mid-term and final. Highly recommended
His class is not very hard as long as you go to class and do the assignments. Although if your not a good test taker I wouldn't recommend him.
JB is an effective traditional prof. His assignments are in line with his declared expectations and he provides ample prep for tests. But again, he is a traditional professor. To him, you are undergraduate students, not grad students, and definitely not his peer. His rigidity and lack of value placed on intrinsic learning were distracting at least.
TAKE THIS CLASS. He is entertaining and teaches a great subject. He does take forever to give papers back, which I normally don't care about buuuut, I'd like an idea of where I stand in the class before taking the final. Need to commit to attending every class which isn't hard because it is interesting and applicable to all of our lives.
Very great professor, Gives examples about everything he introduces and even stops every so often to ask if anyone has questions. Make sure not to skip his class though because all of his notes are on the chalkboard and only on the chalkboard! Tests can be a little hard, but as long as you study and pay attention in class you'll be fine!
Great Professor! If you come to class everyday and take notes you will be fine. The reading falls in line with the lecture, and he does a great job of outlining what you should be focused on for the tests. Highly recommended and you will learn a lot! He is one of the few professors that has a clear logical structure to his class.
wrote out notes while lecturing, didnt just read off a powerpoint. Funny
I learned something new every day of class.Great teacher, explains things clearly and very kind about answering and explaining something you don't understand.Great class discussions as well.Have applied much of what I learned in his class to other classes and life.Always looked forward to class.
One of my favorite professors of my entire year. Extremely helpful, thorough, humorous, and teaches in an old-style chalk-board writing that is easy to understand. If you go to class and pay attention and write what he writes, getting an A is more than easy. His lectures are engaging and interesting.
He is AWESOME! I loved his class inspired me to minor in Sociology! I am so interested now! If you go to class, pay attention, and take good notes you won't need to read the text book! He uses questions in previous quizzes on the final! SO keep them!
Bad teacher. Not recommended!
Awesome teacher, awesome class. He discusses things clearly and with great social awareness and appreciation for people of all backgrounds. I've learned a lot from him, and also enjoyed discussing topics with him further after class. I can't wait to take another of his classes!
Very educated, open, and respectful. Completely unafraid to interrupt oppressive statements and explain them.
He was very unclear in his instructions, gave no feedback on returned papers (that I believe he did not even read), and took months to return basic assignments. Class was mostly lecture, and the subject matter was great but his delivery was poor. Josh said many things that I found offensive (and uninformed) that hinted at some misogynistic views.
Bass if my favorite professor at PSU by far! He is very passionate, inspiring, and pushes his students to take responsibility for themselves.
Bass is a pretty straightforward but engaging teacher. He explains things in a very approachable and conversational manner and his lecture notes really helped me organize and connect ideas. He's a little cynical, but his analysis is sharp and his class is engaging.
Wonderful class. He is funny and tells interesting, relevant stories
Professor Bass is my favorite professor. His lectures are incredibly engaging, even at 9 in the morning. Prepare for a lot of reading and hard work, but also for a very rewarding class.
Bass doesn't take attendance, but tests and assignments are based heavily off of lecture. His lectures are worth attending, though! He has a great sense of humor and cuts through BS very well. Even so, theory is murder with him, but you'll learn a hell of a lot.
Made me want to pursue Sociology
Great class. There is a lot of reading but it's not boring. The class lectures are also interesting. Read and do your homework assignments and you will be fine. Quizzes and the final were all multiple choice with a few short answer. He's a nice teacher I recommend you take his class.
Professor Bass is a good teacher, however, the lectures are long.
I loved Bass! He knew what he was talking about and always found a way to throw in his sense of humor. This class was enjoyable and a breeze. There were weekly assignments and the tests were lengthy. Notes are a must! He makes this class go by quicker than expected on most days. He rockss! Missing class can be hurtful so try to attend every class.
would be a better professor if he was a little bit more personal with students. Don't expect him to reply to emails, as I sent him a handful of very important ones and received zero responses. His exams are awful. He can be funny, but he can also be rude and harsh against students who voice opinions. He acts like they steal the show,it's awkward.
Only two tests and some weekly assignments, but none of them are tough. You just need to do some review before the tests and he gives us study guides. The lectures are long, but I think he has already tried his best to make the lectures funnier. Would recommend this professor.
Hilarious, relatable, and socially aware. Willing to deviate from planned lectures to accommodate student interests, but generally doesn't go on dull or unhelpful tangents. Knows his stuff and is a great teacher and great human. I'll be taking his classes again!
Joss is a great teacher. He is cynical and sarcastic, hilarious and exceedingly passionate about his subject. I would recommend taking any course he offers. He has what seems like endless knowledge and it very happy to share it.
Best prof I've had at PSU. He's always prepared and mixes student questions into his lectures really well. Lectures are fantastic and really useful to help grasp the concepts found in the reading. His classroom is exactly how college is supposed to feel. He's sarcastic, funny, and a fantastic teacher. A+ guy; truly cares about what he's doing.
If you go to class, take notes on his lectures, and read or even skim most of the chapters you will get a good grade :)
This is the professor you want to take if you're interested in studying sociology. He is balanced, fair, honest, engaging; everything you want in a professor. I have learned far more in one of his classes than I've learned in all other classes not taught by him. For Sociology at PSU, do all you can to get into HIS class.
Bass was engaging and had a sense of humor. He has two kick ass essay quizzes, so get ready to read and stretch your brain. Theory is boring in nature be he keeps your attention. He says does that make sense a million times. Bring your "A" game.
Took this class with around 130 other people. Nice writing assignments every week. Very helpful feedback and concise teaching!
Josh's lectures highlight the key points, and the textbook goes in-depth with the details. Attending class helps grasp the theories and concepts. As an instructor, he is blunt, sarcastic, and stays focused on the subject at hand. He gives out the study guide, so the essay exams are easy if you study/review.
Professor Bass is an amazing lecturer, he outlines the key points very clearly. He writes down the main ideas on the board which is a huge help but definitely write your own notes because you probably won't remember what he said specifically later. The way he gives the text information flows so well together but definitely go to his lectures.
Dr. Bass is open to questions and flexible. We didn't get through all the material in the syllabus, but he didn't force us to cram on our own. Attend class, take notes, and read the textbook! Also, jot examples down when he talks. Tests were hard, but the tests were curved and participation points help. The writing assignments were easy if you try
Honestly, the best professor I've ever had. He engages us in his lectures and is so passionate about Sociology that it gave me goosebumps the first week I was in his class. He's funny, self-critical, descriptive, and a master of his craft. The in-class notes are difficult to look back through and comprehend so make sure to read the book as well.
His an amazing teacher, love his lectures he gives examples and amazing lectures .
He gives really clear notes that he writes out and explains as he's going. Takes the time to answer questions and put them into the discussion. The class is fun to be in and listen to and the only homework is a weekly 2 page paper on what is being discussed but it is really easy to get done. Easy class to study for, overall a very competent teacher
Josh is a great professor! His lectures are amazing, grading criteria is clear, he offers extra credit and makes sure all his students understand a concept before he moves on. He's really funny too which keeps you engaged.
Joshua Bass is overall one of my favorite SOC teachers. He does a really great job and really encourages people asking questions that usually leads to great class discussions. The tests were a bit difficult, but if you study they shouldn't be too hard. Would totally recommend, especially for Intro to Soc.
I love Professor Bass!!! He is super funny and cool. I love the way he does his lectures, as long as you take good notes you will do fine. He is kind of sarcastic but explains everything really well. I love his sociology classes.
The best professor in this university by far. Brilliant, hilarious, amazing all around. People forget that you can be incredibly smart, kind, and thoughtful and still be a terrible professor. He doesn't use stupid powerpoint slides or the computer at all. He drafts the notes on the boards as he goes through class, with highly interesting lectures.
This teacher was one of the best sociology teachers I've had. He knows theory like no other and I enjoyed his lectures and his humor. He kept me interested in the topic. There are a few papers and essay exams -- come to class and you'll do well. A week before midterms and finals he gives out the essay questions that will be asked so you can study.
Instructor Bass is an awesome teacher and is laid back and caring individual. I learned alot of information that I can take to the real world.
Great professor. His lectures are fantastic, interesting, easy to digest, and informative. Definitely recommend not skipping many classes. His class is not too paper heavy. I have taken a couple lecture classes from him and is one of my absolute favorite professors at Portland State U.
I took this class online so most of our learning was from the textbook. Thankfully the reading is easy, but can be time consuming. No homework or projects, only weekly tests for each chapter read. In the midst of finals panic I somehow missed the final for this class which is required to pass, prof still let me take it with no hit to my grade.
Class is not mandatory but he gives really great lectures. There is weekly work, which is pretty easy as long as you put some effort in. He gives out a study for the midterms. Pretty quick at emailing back, but not really indepth conversation. I would definitely recommend and would take him again.
Professor Bass is amazing, highly recommend! He does a great job of making theory interesting and easy to follow. He is funny and cares about students. In 301 & 302 there are 4 small papers, midterm and a final. He hands out the essay exam questions in advance so you can prep. I hope to take more classes with Prof. Bass.
Great, GREAT professor! Cant wait to be able to choose another class with him as the instructor!
One of the best professors I have had. I LOVED Joshs lecture style. He utilized the white board and was super easy to follow. Josh is also super funny and passionate about sociology. I learned so much from his class. 100% recommend.
Easy A class. You have a few 2-page essays throughout the term and a midterm and final. Exams were administered online and he gave 2 attempts for them. Essays are not hard to complete. He is purely lecture based, no powerpoints. So if you have in-person lecture, attend and just listen, maybe write down key vocab. Not a hard class.
Bass's class is entertaining if you enjoy cynical pessimistic teachers. He was good at his job but some of his darker jokes fell a little flat in the room and his overall attitude was not pleasant. There is no extra instruction on assignments, he takes extra effort to not mention them. He specifically requested we email, but he never checks it.
Joshua's class was a amazing. It was a great way to start of the day since it was my first class of the day. Joshua has very attentive and easy to follow lectures. I absolutely loved this class.
Easy assignments, easy exams, extra credit offered if needed. Gave fascinating lectures peppered with a quirky sense of humor that kept dry or dark subjects from being too much to handle. I looked forward to these lectures and plan on taking more of his classes in future!
Tremendous overview on classical sociology. Very clear about what's required and incredibly capable of breaking down complex concepts into understandable common vernacular. One of the very best professors I've ever had.
He easily breaks down tough sociological concepts and is very knowledgeable. I have never once been bored in this class. Beware though that there aren't very many assignments, so one bad grade will do you dirty.
This is my second term with Prof Bass and it was incredible! You will never be bored by his lectures. The only possible con of this class is also a pro and that is how you are only graded on a total of approx. 5-6 things. No busy work but everything you turn in really counts!
I really enjoyed the lectures and rarely felt like it was hard to focus during the lectures. The textbook was "mandatory" but I never really used it and just made sure to pay attention during the lectures. Overall I really enjoyed the class and learned quite a bit.
You can tell he is very knowledgable and passionate about the topics. His lectures were comprehensive and really easy to take notes on. Everything from the notes was directly correlated to all tests. There were only 4 two page write ups throughout the term and were graded easily. As well as only 2 exams that we had two tries on.
Bass likes to talk and if you miss a class you can catch up in the test book, he is passionate about teaching. Speaking up in class is important. You will get good grades if you show up and engage in the material, its more freestyle than other classes.
I have taken both of Joshuas 301/302 and if you show up to class and read the assigned chapter there is no way not to succeed. One of the few teachers who really cares and tries to engage. I would recommend it to anyone needing 301/302. He is also flexible with deadlines.
Read the textbook, take the quizzes. Two chances for every quiz except for the final exam. Easy peasy.
Professor Bass is very passionate and enthusiastic about sociology and it shows in his teaching. While his class was lecture heavy he always made sure that his students understood what was going on before continuing onto another topic. Barely any homework, a few extra credit assignments with an essay due every other week. He is a great teacher!
