His class is very confusing. You have a paper due every friday and he is a very tough grader. You don't go over anything in class and all you get is peer reviews. He makes very rude and sarcastic remarks. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Five papers through out the semester, all peer reviewed which is no help at all. Very hard grader, hard to make even a B on papers(only one person in the class has). Funny but can be crude. Doesn't do much in class except lecture.
Seriously, do not take his class. A lot of work and super hard grader. Also, he seems very full of himself and he's always right. Very rude and unclear.
HE IS VERY HARD. HE CRITIQUES YOUR PAPER LIKE CRAZY AND ALWAYS THINKS HE IS RIGHT. He assigns peer review that no one understands. Does not explain anything well. IMPOSSIBLE TO GET AN A ON ANYTHING. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. STAY AWAY!!!!
Worst teacher I had this semester. Papers hard, if you dont emphasize on your thesis then your not going to get an A. I wrote a great paper got an A in another class a B in his. If you ask questions he gives a smart respomse as if your suppose to know it, not funny. Useless busy work. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Seriously the worst professor out there. If you ask questions, he won't answer them. I've gotten A's in every single one of my English classes except his. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He is rude. Assigns papers the night before they are due. Won't meet up with you. And is not prompt on returning emails, or grading. Overall, do not take him. Seriously.
5 essays throughout semester and a 6th for final. Grades very hard, no one got an A on any of the essays. Lots of easy homework to bring up grade and he has no late policy for it. I have learned a lot in this class's and my writing has improved a lot. He is a very reasonable teacher and extended our essay due date all the time, not hard to get a B.
He grades very strictly but overall i learned a lot in his class and my writing skills have improved tremendously. 5 essays and 1 final essay. Impossible to get an A in the class but a B is reasonable. The essay topics are hard to understand.Turn essays in on time!
Gives alot of easy work but you will have a lot of essay which no one will make an A on.
He doesn't know what he's talking about. Ever. Worst teacher I've ever had. Like for real, save yourself the trouble and take Ms. Flynn's class.
His feedback on papers is unhelpful and unclear about how you could improve. He has flat-out insulted my writing, saying to me that I use big words because I don't know what I'm talking about. His class isn't hard necessarily, but he isn't worth dealing with. Don't take this class unless you have thick skin and a GPA that can take an F.
Dr. Beall is very intelligent. By taking his class, for the first time in 2 years I feel like I'm taking a college level class. Take this from someone who has made straight A's since the 4th grade - IT'S GONNA BE TOUGH!! If you are a really really good writer, take him. I got an A in his class, but it was certainly NOT easy. Good luck!
Pros of taking his class: He gives out homework that are easy 100's and is laid back on turning in late work. Topics for our paper were linked to psychology/socio which was I was interested in. He did his absolute best on teaching pre-writing methods. Cons: Writing 4 essays on the same topic got super annoying. He got off topic 75% of class time
Dr.Beall is a really smart guy and it shows, it can be intimidating. However, he really helps you learn how to be a better writer. It's not an easy class at all but he really tries to help and it very open to accepting late homework.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. He is very rude and insulting in class and his feedback on papers and his answers to general questions in class are very unclear and unhelpful. You're probably never going to get an A on his papers so save yourself the trouble and and find a different professor.
Three essays were assigned in one email, all due that week. Slightly rude in feedback from papers. I would not suggest this professor ESPECIALLY if you dislike English. You more than likely will not get an A. Very smart man. Just take someone else.
Impossible to get an A on a single paper. His essay topics are confusing and you will never give him the answer that he wants. He always disagrees with your view on the topic, even though he says he wants you to have your own argument. He says you will get an A if you write about something he hasn't considered before but he knows everything so….
There will be 4 hard essays that you have to work really hard on to receive even a B. He does gives feedback on your papers but it is mainly criticism. In order to make a B in the class, you must do well on all the other assignments which are fairly easy. There will also be 3 grammar presentation as well. Tough class, but you can do it!
There are 5 hard essays about unrelated topics that you must complete. THEY'RE VERY HARD!! He'll meet with you if you ask but meeting usually leaves you more confused on your assignment than when you started. FIND A NEW PROF!!!!
This is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. I never skipped and yet I still struggled like crazy. I pulled plenty of all-nighters specifically for this class because the essays are super hard. The prompts are EXTREMELY difficult. The readings you have to connect in a 5 page paper have nothing to do with each other so he makes you "dig deep"
If you skip 3 days of class you lose a whole letter grade. I repeat , a whole letter grade. You could Ace every essay (3 4 page essays , and 2 5 page essayys) and miss 3 days and end up with a B in the class. He's a chill dude , super cool , but he expect college level writing . I'd say impossible to get a A , not hard to get a B .
Want to actually learn how to write? Take this class. Sure he can be very hard to take but he can be very helpful if you ask him for help. There are times where he is completely hard to understand because he is so smart, but overall he teaches how to write as a college student. He'll drop your worst essays and accept your 2 highest graded essay.
Really funny, almost too smart. MUST attend class. No tests, only essays. The essays are difficult and involve making connections between things that have no connection whatsoever. 5 essays but he only takes your 2 highest grades. He expects a lot for a beginner's class, but he gives extra help to anyone and you'll do better if you take it.
Even though we read 20-60 pages of intense ancient literature & wrote 500 words a week, did two essays, a presentation, and a group project (in a 2000 lvl class), he will not give 100s no matter how far above and beyond you go. He's a wonderful person when he's not teaching, but I avoid his classes at all costs.
If you're looking for an easy A, he's not your man. On the other hand, if you're looking to become a good, college level writer, he's the perfect teacher. He is very willing to help you out and gives you feedback whenever you ask. He also makes cheesy jokes all the time so be sure to laugh at them!
Do not take his class, there is a lot more English teachers that are not as ridiculous as him. The papers you have to write all semester make you compare and find connections between texts that have nothing to do with each other and the instructions he gives to write the paper will just leave you even more confused. Would not recommend.
Do not take his class unless you like writing long papers and having to make connections between 2 or more readings that have nothing to do with each other. He uses the book "Emerging" and "They SayI Say." Honestly he is a horrible teacher, if you do take him expect a long hard confusing semester in his class.
Dr. Beall is a very bright man and expects a lot of you. Everyone in my class basically failed the first essay, but he ended up dropping our 3 lowest essay grades and only taking 2 for credit. If you do all the homework and put real effort into your essays, you will pass. He is always there to help you out and if you take his help an A is yours.
As for everyone saying he is a horrible teacher, thats not true. It may not be an easy class but it is a class directed towards bettering you into a college level writer. If you want to slack off, don't take him. If you want to actually learn, do take him. He's the best professor I had at GGC and genuinely cared about helping me get an A.
DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. CLASS At first he seems like the class will be really cool, calm, a lot of work but not too bad. I was wrong. This class is hell. He will never agree with you. The class can have a terrible average and he will still think that it's the students. Expect to be confused. Expect to ask questions that will never be answered.
The grades essays, They Say, I Say exercises, and presentations. There were five essays, the first two were three pages, the second was four pages, and the last two were five pages. That may not sound like a lot, but it is when you have to connect up to three sources that have nothing to do with each other. Attendance is part of your grade as well
If you GENUINELY want to become an overall better writer then take his class, but don't expect a lot of help from. A lor of hw and papers, 5 of them that involves making a connection between two writings and no midterm. He makes writing more complicated than it has to be. Don't expect to get an A out his class, unless you like to write a lot.
I appreciate his lectures, sometimes the response papers can be challenging and his grading can be equally tough, but he sometimes allows revision, which helps hone literary skills. He does give good feed back!
This is not an easy course, he makes you earn everything you get but if you're willing to do the work then you'll learn a lot and get an ok grade. go into the class with a good attitude and expect lots of outside work. He's reasonable if you work with him.
This class was in summer, because we were a small class we sat in conferance style / book club like so that the teacher did not have to lecture but instead we would submit questions about the novels we were reading and based conversations like that. only had a few graded assignments: 3 response papers, a midterm paper, and final paper.
Dr. Beall, is a very good professor and he is very understanding with his students. The thing I want to say about this class is that he is a very tough grader on papers but he make your work for it. At the end of the semester he will drop your 3 lowest papers. There are a total of 5 papers in all. Class is not an easy A you have to put a lot effort
Taking this class with Dr. Beall was okay, but there really wasn't anything in particular to look forward to when considering coming to class. We would read the selections from our Norton Anthology before class, sometimes we would have a reaction paper to write and turn it, and we would discuss the text during our next class time.
Very challenging class! Through this class I feel that I've become more well read and sturdy in my writing skills. Be ready to have your writing skills tested to its limits. The readings overall are very interesting, too! Dr. Beall is super smart and really helped me out when I needed it, especially on my final paper. Would definitely recommend!
Beall is a cool dude but he don't explain topics and there's paper after paper.
Boring class time because all we do is talk about revising essays. Also as soon as you turn in one essay, he gives you another.
The class was called "The Novel," so I expected to read & discuss a few novels in depth. Instead we read A LOT of novels & barely skimmed the surface with discussion. Bit disappointing. Dr. Beall is decent though. He's a well intentioned guy who will go out of his way to help you succeed, but his assignments are often confusing & unclear.
I tend to give professors the benefit of doubt since I feel my work ethic can make up for any shortcomings. That said my work ethic didn't apply here especially at this standard of writing. Research based writing is very TIME consuming but I have garnered writing SKILLS. Overall UNDERSTANDING prof, LEARNING CURVE, TIME INTENSIVE, RESEARCH course.
Very cool guy but no one will ever get an A. Literally save yourself take any other teacher. Do not take him he is super hard, will make you write essays that have NOTHING to do with each other
Dr. Beall keeps it real! He has lots of energy making class time interesting and informative. His teaching style includes flexibility and a genuine interest in student success. His classes fill up fast and there is no question why.
Gives audio feedback on papers. The feedback was more blatantly negative than constructive. With how in depth his first lectures were, I honestly thought his class would be tough from the beginning, but that it would make me a better writer. In actuality, I feel like I have lost critical writing skills by taking his class.
Dr. Beall is a tough grader but gives back really helpful feedback. If you need help just ask but being in class to go over things makes it easier. Homework can be tedious but not difficult and with effort passing his class is not an issue. Participating in class discussions will give you things to write about in papers so don't miss class!
Honestly, I hated this class. I had always been an A student, but I got C on all the essays and response papers. His feed back wasn't helpful in improving. He took a long time to grade so you didn't have time to apply feed back on to the next paper. He emailed all assignments so checking your email is important.
5 Papers in total. begins talking about the next paper before you turn in the last paper. All homework is done on your own. Take this class if your good at writing only
Amazing professor! Took my writing to the next level! He is always willing to meet and help you with your paper. There is five papers in all but he will drop your lowest three. There was always two plus weeks to work on a paper, which is more than enough time! And the feedback is a tremendous help in improving. Overall a great guy and an easy class
Dr. Beall is a cool dude, but when it comes to grading, expect the worst grade possible. This class will make you want to see a therapist, a tutor, and even a pastor , all at the same time.
This is a HARD class. If you dont want a bad grade, do not take this class. It always took him forever to post the powerpoint and he is a tough grader. He also doesn't believe in extra credit. If you take him, good luck
The feed back given was hard to apply. The writing was not graded in a timely manner. The feedback that was given was hard to understand and was often subjective. This class felt more like a 3000 or 4000 class rather than a survey class. Dr. Beall talked as if everyone understood what he was asking saying but very few in the class did.
He's a really nice guy, but only take his class if you're preparing for a lot of writing in the future and need prep for important papers.
He was a horrible professor! Took him last semester, I thought for sure I was going to fail. Lucky I barely made it out... Expects you to read and make confusing connections. Super tough grader. Feedback was horrible, I never understood. He never answered to answer your question but more just to answer his own. Would not recommend at all!
He doesn't tell you what he wants. He gives way too much homework and doesn't care. I have an essay due, and annotated biography due and homework from a book. All due today. He didn't give us the homework tell Saturday and today is Monday!!!
Take him. He is not as bad as students make him seem. He is really helpful and knows his stuff. Lectures are very entertaining and funny. There is a lot of writing but this is an English Composition class, so what do you expect?! I got along with just fine.
Doesnt put grades in until the VERY end of the semester. Gave us 7 papers which is no big deal except he wont grade them, so once youve completed all of the papers, you have no clue how you have done, and all of them are going to be somewhat the same because you have NO FEEDBACK. First day of English COMPOSITION and we read a book. Dont take it
Beware. This class is so hard if youre not a good writer. Its his way or the highway
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! He doesnt grade, doesnt answer his email, and will disagree with everything you say. During my presentation, he interrupted after every sentence. Absolutely ridiculous. Save yourself the time and get a professor that will actually help you.
I took 8-week summer session & we wrote a paper a week & most of the time he forgot to send HW emails on time so he sent it last second. He had intense critical feedback and graded hard. He wanted evidence for everything but wanted our writing to be conversational. There are 2 days left of the semester & he has not even graded half of our stuff.
Beall was a great teacher for the summer class. Ignore these negative reviews- most of these people are actually too lazy to do basic English work. I loved the "blogpost" essays we had to do because it enabled me to write something I was passionate about which was economics. Yes, he is a tough grader but you'll writing will improve because of it.
Don't take this professor if you're a person who needs an A. He's a super nice guy, really intelligent, but the hardest grader I've ever met. I've never failed any papers in my entire life until now. He disagrees with EVERYTHING you say. His feedback is confusing and if you don't write EXACTLY WHAT HE WOULD then expect to fail your papers.
He grades way to harshly for the level the class is at. On top of that, he doesn't answer questions clearly and doesn't help clear up confusion. He will give you reading assignment at 11 at night to read 20 plus pages the night before they are due only to give you a reading quiz that makes you memorize names rather than important story elements.
Hope you enjoy long nights to write papers just to have them graded a month later. You will get feedback, but it will be after you know what to fix and the entire class has moved onto new things. Be careful when you choose your professor it'll ruin you.
Worst Professor ever!!! He will make you want to pull your hair out. SO much work for a 1101 class. Youd think you were taking advanced x3. He makes you feel dumb & god for bid if you ask a question. He always has smart comments to make. DONT TAKE HIM
He is a tough grader but he does care and tries to give good feed back on the essays. He makes you write better essays and helps you grow through the year.
A LOT of assignments. The amount of assignments was overwhelming and honestly, ridiculous. He is a nice guy, but the amount of work he gave was just terrible. Essays also needed to be very cookie-cutter and had to have no sense of personal writing style, which made things very difficult.
go look for another professor babe
I have gained a significant amount of knowledge and skill in writing composition and that is due to Dr. Beall and my personal determination to succeed. He also strived for his students to be able to think independently, which was crucial for me in the writing process. I would encourage you to take Dr. Beall if you want to become a better writer.
Nice guy with great feedback but a super slow grader. Gives useful feedback but a month after you turned in your paper and moved on. I spent more time writing in his class (homework included) than every other class combined. Came out stronger but it wasn't easy for sure. Only take if you love writing. Also the topics were super "woke". got annoying
I would never take his class again, we had to wright papers back to back, plus reading they say I say, doing vocab and having to do annotations all together, I would have loved it if he gave us a break between papers to let us finish our they say I say's. Overall he is an ok professor.
All he talks about is his progressive views it gets annoying. Also his paper topics are sooo boring. I don't recommend.
In all my years of school I have never had such a bad teacher. I would NEVER take this man again He gives so much work and before you can even finish that his gives you more then slaps a 5 page paper on top of that. He is very contradicting and has a poor way of explaining what he wants. PLS STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS !! SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE.
Very strict on grading. You will never achieve a A in his class, per his own words. My class had to report him for his unfair grading and harshness. He takes forever to grade. It i
Dr. Beall is a super fun & cool guy, but as a professor..no. He had us write 5 papers back-to-back, all on relevant topics that got old *really* fast. He's a SUPER tough grader. Papers I felt confident about got a near-failing grade. However, he does only count the highest 3 because he does genuinely care about progress over immediate perfection.
We were given 7 books to read over 14 weeks, which left little time to do any short essays we were assigned or finish large papers at the same time. He's a cool guy, but not a great professor. The advice he gives is GREAT, but you don't have time to apply it because he grades it 3 weeks later. Anything you feel confident in will get a low grade.
Professor Beall is a very strict grader and hard to impress. He is also slow at grading and his feedback is confusing and contradictory at times. Prompts for essays are vague, and so it doesn't make sense why he is so strict on grading either. I only managed a 90 because partipation was 20% of our grade. Otherwise, it would have been a B for sure.
The continuous papers was it for me, he acting like I don't have other classes that give me the same amount of work. Personally I wouldn't take his class again, I was trying to stay strong but that wasn't for me.
He does assign a lot of homework and there are five papers total but he drops the 2 lowest ones at the end of the semester. Bad at reading emails but he will help if you speak to him directly.
Dr Beall is very hard to impress. His grading will make you lose so much confidence in your writing. He assigned so many papers and most of the topics were very uninteresting to write on. There are five papers to write with a minimum of 5 pages for each and he drops the three lowest grades. He also does not believe in extra credit.
Tough grader. Expects students who just came out of high school to type up essays like they've been in college for 5 years. Also his topics for essays were to "woke" and if your opinion is different from his your opinion is wrong. My class started with like 20 something and ended with like 8 students cause everyone dropped his class.
THERE ARE WAY BETTER OPTIONS FOR AN ENGL1101 CLASS THAN DR. BEALL!! You will learn the same exact thing in another class. He is a VERY tough grader and will make you feel less than because of your writing. His grading criteria is confusing and very unrealistic for an entry level college course. Do not take this class there are way better options.
I enrolled for the Summer Class and was scared after reading all the negative reviews. I would say they are true. He is a VERY tough grader, grading the 1101 class like a much higher level course. He does this so you may, "become better writers" which is true, but at the cost of your grade and GPA. If you want an A, stay clear of this class.
Just look for another professor
Definitely not worth the hassle. The only feedback we received was on our graded essays, which took about a month to be returned. This left little time for revisions since the next essay was already due. The topics were dull, and there was no appreciation for personal writing style. Honestly, if you can, avoid this class.
Funny guy but not a good professor, I promise you he doesn't make enough money to care as much as he does. Way too many papers on topics that are super repetitive and get old extremely quick. Stay away from this man and his class. Just wait til next semester and find another professor if there is no other options.
Change Classes if you can, Don't Recommend at all.
A good prof. that gives papers that are extremely repetitive, using the same texts, which can get boring over time. If you take this class, keep in mind that you have to follow the rubrics "to-a-T", or your chances of passing are slim. He'll drops 3 low papers, which could be good/bad, depends on what you had. Good class, though, it's difficult.
His way or the highway!!!!!
Dr Beall gives you 5 papers throughout the semester and drops 2 at the end of the semester which I'm thankful for but he's very rough on grading and mostly does not give anything above a C. He has very high expectations and I would say all the topics on his papers were repetitive and boring. He was pretty cool but I would not take him again.
Ignorant takes, wastes a lot of time talking about unrelated topics, generally boring, and unclear prompts for assignments.
He takes literally months to grade your papers. And most of the books he gives our repetitive and boring. He will give a pop quiz and put it in the same category as attendance.
Bro don't take him he is way too strict on grading 1 and takes wayyyy too long to grade things and leaves you up to 4 min audio commentary on your papers, and doesn't give you feedback for any of your rough drafts to go and revise them. Buddy has no resources on his mycourses page to even help you if you want to revise the paper.
He is amazing if you are an English major. He will work with you outside of class, but he takes months for grading. He is relaxed on deadlines and will let you submit more than once. However, he is tough on grading. He has very high expectations only a senior with a concentration with literature can meet.
I honestly don't know what to say. This is the first time I've ever failed a class. I truly believe his teaching style wasn't for me. He's a tough grader and gives no grace, even when you give it your all. I emailed him a lot he barely responds. I've lost confidence in my writing. I feel so dumb.
This was the only class I ever failed in any level of schooling. We had six papers that had to link each new reading to all previous ones—despite wildly unrelated topics like ADHD, religious conversion, and some sort of masked graffiti artist. The task felt senseless, and feedback was minimal and unclear, just brief audio notes.
I read all the reviews on ratemyprofessors and signed up for the course anyways because I thought it couldn't possibly be that bad and didn't wanna be set back. DON'T T DO IT. ITS NOT WORTH IT. Your grade will affect your GPA FOREVER. He is a really genuine person but the class is nearly impossible to keep up with; especially with a full schedule.
He is robot no emotion for the human kind.Avoid this class at all cost. If you do decide to take this class make sure u buy a casket aswell.
Only sign up for his class if you want to fail, i would never recommend anyone taking this class.
