He's a good teacher. He's willing to help if you ask. His tests are not hard if you take your time to pay attention and study.
Great teacher, very willing to help. Tests are not difficult if you go to class and pay attention. Would definitely recommend!
Good teacher. Best dressed accounting teacher by far!
He is a great teacher, very helpful if you do not understand the material. Would definitely take him again.
Great personality and great teacher! You have to study to get good grades. Study your homework, GUDS, and learn smart and you will pass the class.
Mr Coyne is very clear, gives chances to ask questions. He tries to make sure the students understand the material.
So basically, he's a great professor. He responds quick to his emails, is very helpful, will explain things further if asked to, and is very knowledgable about what he teaches. The only problem is he doesn't make his own tests, so there's a lot on the tests that he does not cover. Read the book. Do the online assignments. Collaborate with others.
Dr. Coyne really cares about his students and want them to succeed in his class but more importantly, in life. He is available for help outside of class and goes out of his way to make sure his students do well. I highly recommend him for Accounting 2010.
He's very knowledgeable about the subject and likes to include words you should know in his lectures. Very helpful when you ask questions. And his suits are up to par.
He is a very nice guy. You must go to class to make a good grade. Go to class and do GUDS, learnsmarts, quizzes, and study for the exams and you will do well. He is always willing to help and answer questions. Responds to emails quickly. Cares about your grade and helping you pass.
He's really helpful. Hard to understand at first, but you'll adjust. Definitely teaches the material and breaks it down for those who don't fully understand. As long as you come to class everyday and do the online homework, you'll really understand and have good grades.
Good sense of humor
You must go to class to pass. He takes a 2 point grade every class as an attendance grade. He is very helpful though and responds to emails quickly. Cares about your success in the class. Make sure to do all the learn smarts, GUDS, and quizzes that are online. And study, study, study for tests.
He is a great teacher
Thank God for this man! He really does care if you understand the criteria and if you don't he will literally stay on the topic until you do! Hard to find professors who actually care about the students actually learning
Dr Coyne really cares for the understanding of everyone in his class. He take his time to explain his lectures over and over again.
He really takes his time in class to prepare you for the next test! He responds to his emails quickly and always has his office door open for questions. A little confusing sometimes because he expects you to understand large words, but will take the time to explain them to you. Attendance isnt mandatory, but you must go to class for the GUDS points
Teacher is very helpful if you don't understand.
He's a great professor in my opinion. I started this class with no former accounting knowledge and I am having no problem with the work. As long as you LISTEN in class I think its easy. Go to class for the GUDS. There is a lot of work on connect. If you do well on those assignments, you should have no problem with the test. And he's funny to me..
Very good teacher!!
Best dressed professor I've had on campus! Come to class for guds points but not mandatory. He isn't the best teacher I've had, lectures are confusing at times. There is required work, connect quizzes, and learnsmart you must complete for points.
Best dressed teacher I've ever had. Not the best teacher I ever had, not the worst. Explains everything. Not always the most clear but will review over it if you ask him to. Overall relatively good teacher. I'd recommend him.
One of the better accounting professors for this course, which is not saying much considering they are all awful. He wears scarves on test days. He's pretty cute. Has daily work to check for attendance... Will make you "Lock it up" if needed.
Great Professor. At times he can be a little confusing in what he's teaching, but he will always go back and review or help out in any other way. Has great suits as well, if that's what you're into. Tests are standard set by the University, but he will remove questions or make them bonus if he does not agree or it was unclear.
Attendance matters! Not only for easy points but to help better understand the material. Miss a class and you may miss a helpful lecture!
This professor does his ABSOLUTE best help you understand. He is always open for questions and office hours. Accounting was a tough subject for me but I can honestly say that he makes it easier. He throws out questions on exam if he feels they were confusing. GO TO CLASS. you get points for attending. Best dressed professor.
He's easily the most professional professor I've had. At first, I thought he was extremely confusing and terrible, but he really is not all that bad. He wants everyone to do well and reaches out. Not an easy A for sure. Study notes and the book. He's a decent teacher, but he can be all over the place sometimes and is awkward with things.
New professor but a good one! Some things he goes over are confusing but he will always go back and help better explain if you need him to. Tests, homework and quizes(on connect) are required by the university but he will extend due dates or take questions off the exams that he believes are not clear. Go to class!!!!! Attendance is taken everyday
New professor but a good one! Go to class and you should pass, unless you don't pay attention. Well dressed and always wears a scarf on test day, it's goodluck! Do all connect assignments!
Overall, he is a good professor. If you need help on any assignments just ask & he will help you.
Great teacher and he actually cares! Just go to class , take notes and study hard to pass
His class is clear as far as what he wants you to go over in class. The best way to pass is to consistently read and understand the material. It's not clear, but their is tutoring in the building open all day till 7. He also will continously try to make sure you understand during lectures , and very easy to communicate with. STUDY FOR THE TEST?
Dr. Coyne is an excellent teacher who wants his students to succeed. He goes over topics repeatedly until everyone understands them. He gives good lectures and is available outside of class for help. I highly recommend him for Accounting 2010
Professor Coyne is a very helpful and knowledgeable in his field. He will not go on with a subject until it is clear that everyone understands (if you do not speak up, he will continue). He may sometime gets a little confusing in his wording but he will go back and put it into simpler terms. He also has no problem if he disagrees with the material.
We started off a little rough but he ended up being an OK professor.
He is a newer teacher, and still figuring out how he wants to teach.
I really liked his class. I had no interest in accounting, but it is a required class for my major. He made it pleasant to learn accounting.
Go To class for easy grade.
Go To class for easy grade duh.
Tests are easy if you study. He expects the best from his students, and wants them to succeed.
He knows a lot about Accounting, but he does not always know how to put into words what he means. He can be confusing sometimes. He has a really good spirit and wants his students to succeed. Tests are tough. Go to Class. Read the Chapters. He will thoroughly explain an answer if you have a question.
Professor Coyne was very helpful. Things got a little confusing at times but he went over it a few times to make sure everyone was on the same page and if you didn't understand by then he would invite you to attend office hours. However, he does teach on a upper level so you should definitely read your book to help you out. Overall, hes GREAT!
Professor Coyne is a really helpful teacher but can be confusing at times. He's very knowledgeable about this course, so sometimes his explanations are too advanced to understand. Projects can be difficult, but he helps as much as possible to make sure you pass his course. I recommend taking him over McMickle.
The class requires reading. Teacher isn't very clear and at the end of every class you have Guds which is like a quiz and it goes towards your grade. I recommend that you go to class if want to pass his class.
Dresses like a champ and teaches like a champ. There for ya if ya need it.
Professor Coyne is a very good professor. His lectures have great clarity. He is very helpful when you need assistance. Would love to take him for accounting ll.
No issues to speak of really. He may veer off topic from time to time but pay attention, participate, and you will do well.
Coyne is a nice guy and is very knowledgable. He does tend to go off topic and kind of jumbled. The class (accounting systems) is mostly over his lectures and perdisco, draws on libre office (4), and quizzes on ecourseware (need book). He is very fair gives some extra credit and very helpful if you have questions. I would him take again
Great first year teacher. Loved the suits
For someone who teach for the first semester, professor Coyne is a funny and knowledgeable guy who care about his students. He is a tough grader when it come to ICD drawing. The only thing that is difficult about this class is perdisco, so that why he offer class time for students to work on it and ask questions. Overall, I enjoy taking this class.
Great teacher!
This was Professor Coyne's first semester teaching. Though this was a difficult course, Coyne is very clear about how everything needs to be done. Go to class, pay attention to his lectures, and ask him for any help you may need. You will do just fine!
He sometimes is difficult to understand because he speaks very fast and uses some "elevated" language. He will always go back and explain if needed. Does a great job at answering questions and making sure everyone understands. He is wiling to curve tests and push deadlines when fit.
Good professor. This is still a tough class but he will do all he can to make sure you understand the material.
Good Professor. This still a tough class but he will do anything he can to make sure you understand the material.
This class is different compared to your usual accounting classes. The class allows accounting students to think outside the box and use tools taught in previous accounting classes. This was Prof. Coynes first time teaching this class, and I believe he will develop this course into something very useful for a student's future.
When going over lecture, Dr. Coyne is very thorough and will clarify any questions asked. To pass, just take good notes, because they serve as a supplement to all assignments and tests.
Smart professor but it can be hard to keep up with what he's talking about.
He is a new professor so he is adjusting
This professor expected the best out of his students.
He is a great professor, and has a real passion for teaching, and really knows what he is talking about. However, he can be a bit ambiguous. Considering this is his first semester, he did well, but I think following McMickle's agenda took away from his potential. You have to work hard to earn your grade, but he is always there to help.
Dr. Coyne is a brilliant man, however this can be his major flaw. The content is pretty heavy already, and it would have helped to have it taught in a simple technique with everyday language. I enjoyed the group projects he assigned and that there were zero tests.
GUDS done everyday so go to class, make sure you study everything he gives you
Very knowledgeable about the material, sometimes felt like he was talking down to the class. He used a rather extensive vocabulary, and sometimes the concepts were just above me. The numerous assignments were where I learned the most. Overall, a good class and it will get better, considering this was his first time teaching this course.
Joshua Coyne is very Good teacher and the test are reasonable.
First time teaching, so he has some learning to do on how he wants to teach. He uses a large vocabulary and will use multiple negatives in one sentence making it very confusing. I think in the semesters to come he will be a great teacher as he becomes more experienced and prepared. Gives you extra credit, mid-term and final are group projects.
Great teacher. I really enjoyed the extra reading that he assigned. I would not say that he is easy but I didn't expect it to be an easy class going in.
He is a good professor especially for his first year teaching. He can be confusing when talking openly to the class. The material isn't familiar or easy but he does his best to explain it where students understand. He understands the material almost too much to explain it to someone who does not. He is willing to listen to his class.
Coyne cares about students. He assigned an extra credit reading and spent a class talking about passions and career options with the class. The class wasn't easy or interesting, but he was very helpful whenever questions were asked and made the material bearable.
Go to class. Do your work. Ask him questions if you do not understand something. Class was tough but you can do it.
The class is not something accounting prepares you for and feels foreign. Dr. Coyne was able to help us overcome that by bringing it down to our level. He was ready to help those who showed they were trying, i.e. do not show up with a blank paper and ask for answers. He is always available and if you utilize that, you can make an A.
Pretty good Prof, has some learning to do and needs to remember that we aren't quite as smart as he is yet. Some things he expected us to know, were not clear cut and this made the class a little harder than it had to be.
Mr. Coyne is a great professor. Accounting itself is a tough class. If you attend class and do all of the required assignments you will be fine. The test are cumulative, and your lowest one will get dropped. It is only 3 plus a final. the only thing is he wants you to be in depth when answering his questions pertaining to lectures.
He is very knowledgable on the course material. He is fair to the students and takes their feedback into consideration about the class schedule and how class time is spent.
Prof Coyne is a great teacher overall. He's understanding and willing to answer any questions you may have. He will go out of his way to provide help.
Dr. Coyne cares about his students and wants everyone to do well. The midterm and final are group projects which are really hard but he is willing to help. However, the draws are completely irrelevant to what is in the book and the main project (Perdisco) has absolutely nothing to do with this class or what is in the book.
Very IT driven because he was an IT person in his previous experience. If you've never written code or thought of it then you need to attend class. He explains it well even if you never experienced IT before. Midterm and final were group projects. Assignments are technical draw diagrams of accounting cycles. Perdisco project takes all semester.
The class was okay. Doesn't go over that much how to do the projects. There are no test in this class, just 5 projects. Doesn't really help if you ask a question. Make sure you go to class.
I was not happy at all with this class. He actually stated that this was his first time ever teaching this class and you could defiantly tell! He would tell us one thing in class AB and then by the time we got home from classes that day we would have an email saying that wasn't right he told us wrong. NUMEROUS times
Professor Coyne is cool and really cares about student success. He's your typical accounting nerd teaching a college class, but what else do you expect from college?
You can't blame this professor for not trying. If he doesn't know how to explain something at specific point in time, he will rectify himself by figuring out how by the next class period. Overall, I would recommend taking this teacher. He enlightens his students with useful knowledge.
Dr. Coyne is an amazing professor and I encourage future accounting students to give him a chance. He truly cares about the students. He is goal-oriented and very punctual. He has the doctoral credentials, so do not be afraid to challenge him. But, most importantly, remember to challenge yourself and strive. If you do that, you will be just fine.
Lectures are pretty boring. The grading is sometimes unclear as to why I received the grade I received. There's a lot of work in this class
He is very fair, but refuses to give you an answer if you ask him. He wants to challenge you to find it out yourself.
Good teacher, but when you ask for help will not give you clear feedback. Beats around the bush giving you info to maybe confuse you or make you think harder to figure it out on your own. Nice man but will is not too clear with responses. Other than that class is pretty clear on what the structure will be nd what is needed from each students.
Dr Coyne is a great professor,
Professor Coyne is a decent teacher. His lectures can be very unclear, and it can make for a very confusing class. He will help you out as best as he can, but when he does help, he wants you to try and figure it out for yourself. He is a very reasonable professor, and I would recommend him to anyone interested in taking his classes.
a bit over the top, tries to get people involved, nice guy
Professor Coyne is a great professor and really cares about his students. Some of the material is tough to understand but Professor Coyne will do his best to make sure you understand. He does his best to help but your grade is based on your effort especially for the test!
Not many tests, more projects, quizzes, and online work. He's a very fair teacher and wants to see his students do well.
Come to class. Participation is a big part of your grade plus you wont learn the material if you dont come. Homeworks, quizzes, and assignments are online. The tests arent too bad if you study. Hes a pretty good teacher. explains things well, but sometimes its hard to understand. Overall it was pretty good.
Professor Coyne is a pretty cool professor. Projects were a bit tough but accounting isn't the easiest. Come to class, participation is big part of the grade. Overall, take him he's not hard just pay attention in class.
The class is hard enough... it's something to go to class learn something and get an email that what you learned today was wrong. It was his first time teaching this class so I do understand but...
It's a tough class simply because it's stuff you have never seen or learned before. Pay attention in class. It is not easy to learn if you just read the book. Professor does a good job at making sure you understand, but he can be hard to understand because of his complex vocabulary.
It is difficult to follow along during lectures and when asking questions not much guidance is given. Luckily, you are allowed to work in groups on most assignments.
hE'S A COOL TEACHE. hE CAN BE BORING BUT OVERALL HE HELPS WHERE IS NEEDED. HE DOESN'T REALLY HOLD YOUR ATTENTION THOUGH.
Good teacher. Will help you out if needed. However you will have to work for your grade. Not an easy course but he does every thing he can to help you out as long as you do the work.
He is a good teacher.
He is a good professor.
Decent professor. He tends to over-teach the slides which can be extremely confusing.
Overall he was a great teacher, just didn't care for the class or material.
Mr. Coyne is new to the University of Memphis. His class is your average lecture style. He makes slides available online, so you would do well to print out before class. There is a lot of online homework, so stay organized about the deadline dates. Sometimes explanations were round-about. I did better by reading the concepts myself from the book.
Professor Coyne is a great teacher. If you have questions he is very good at answering them, and if you don't get it the first time he explains it until you do. The quizzes, home works, and tests are fairly easy. He was very courteous when we needed an extra day to do homework or quizzes. I highly recommend him and would definitely take him again
Joshua Coyne is a new professor and has very long lectures. He is kind of lenient on assignments, but you almost every day you have to do GUDS so he knows you come to class. Study for the test and the exams if you take him.
A lot of material covered. Pretty good teacher. This was his first semester teaching this particular class so I believe next semester may be better. Must attend class and stay on top of work.
You really need to go to class because attendance is a grade. Tests are tough and you should definitely study. He'll work with you on due dates and assignments.
he's cool
Overall good teacher, cares about his students learning the material, needs a little more improvement since it was his first year teaching but other than that he did a pretty good job.
He did a great job. One of the most helpful professors in the Fogelman building. Do not be afraid to ask him questions during class, he wants to see his students do well. Attendance is mandatory, there is a quiz (GUDS) every class.
He's cool for checking the attendance. And, he is a good professor.
Dr. Coyne was very helpful. He made sure students didn't rush any assignments. Also, he gave us plenty of time to ask questions in class (and outside of class). Though he was helpful, the class itself was not great. There has to be a different way to teach some of the materials.
pros: Polite, knowledgeable, helpful, somewhat flexible Cons: he's a little arrogant, insisted on writing useless vocabulary on the board, and the structure of the class was poorly prepared. The final was entirely about a subject we spoke nothing about until 2-3 weeks before. Plus, waaayyyy too much dependence on group work.
Dr. Coyne is very knowledgeable man who is very enthusiastic about his job. He can be confusing in his examples sometimes, but don't over think them. He is always open for questions. There is no book but powerpoints. The tests are basically the study guides and homework. Quizzes are given every class but are participation only, so go to class!
This is an accounting class but be ready to learn about building computers and writing code... Nothing about accounting systems at all. It is all about virtual machines, writing codes, and building an accounting information system.
This confusing class has nothing to do with Accounting Systems and I mean nothing. This was a information technology class, & the professor had us downloading different programs, without clear instruction, learning about writing code and working with virtual systems. His videos are not helpful at all; so to all who dare to take Mr. Coyne, BEWARE!
Don't be fooled by this class's ACCT prefix, this is very much an MIS-geared course. The class itself is not hard however the fatal flaw is that he will make you download a Linux VM to your personal computer and use it for several assignments. The course material was convoluted and unhelpful for many.
He gives a lot of busy work, and there is a quiz every lecture class. However, the quizzes have the smallest percentage in the overall grade. Students must give a 15 minute presentation on a topic they are interested in. It is really easy and he grades easily on it. You must buy a book (its cheap) which you will have reading quizzes on each week.
This is a difficult and broad course. By the end we had taken apart a computer, given a presentation, and coded with Linux. Dr. Coyne has high expectations of his students. To me, his intelligence and the difficulty of the material made lectures ambiguous at times. You can tell he genuinely cares about the course and students. I'd recommend him.
I enjoyed this class and Dr. Coyne as a professor. Yes, it may be a little difficult, but not more than any other class I have taken at U of M. The class requires a lot of homework with systems that may be foreign to many students, but Professor Coyne was very helpful if I had any questions. Make an effort, show up to class, and you will do well
Dr. Coyne has videos that explain how to do the homework, but rarely are they helpful. Also, this class was not really accounting systems, and more of an MIS course. Avoid him at all costs. That being said the class wasn't all that hard.
Terrible teacher. Nothing of value learned. Going to teach this subject to myself in the future.
Professor Coyne was a very fair professor. Make sure you pay attention to the due dates because it can be easily overlooked. You get what you put in. So if you complete all the assignments and view all the lectures you will have no problem getting an A
Lectures consist of slides. Tutorials are necessary for homework, but if you watch them while you're working and pause when he says to, they are easy to follow, but you can't skip a tutorial. Also, be prepared to do work on the PRACTICE SET during the 1st half of the semester. Sometimes he assigns 2 sets per milestone, so READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.
This class had a variety of materials and learning opportunities. I enjoyed learning the different programs and the challenges within the assignments.
Professor Coyne's tutorials, lectures, and reading assignments were very organized and very helpful with completing ACCT 4020.
I took Professor Coyne online. He was a good teacher, you had puzzles, lecture notes, and homework. The only test was the final and he give you extra credit at the end.
Professor Coyne is overall pretty fair. On a lot of homework he gives example so thats helpful. You have to pay attention to his tutorials but pretty much listen. He does respond back fast if you email him.
The Practice set is graded harshly in my opinion, but he factors that into his grading logic. There are no make-ups or late submissions, which makes diligence absolutely necessary, but the material is good stuff.
I liked Professor Coyne. Although the assignments are difficult his instructions are really thorough. I would take him again and I recommend him as a professor.
Quiz every week, LOTS of reading but the tests are easy. Make sure to save all lectures so you can use them on the exam.
Professor Coyne is a lot of fun to take. He is a very open teacher and is willing to listen to your thoughts and ideas. The quizzes are timed and detailed but can be passed if you just read the lectures. You have homework once a week and it ranges on scale of difficulty but the difficult homework is gone over in class. Over all a fun teacher.
Awesome teacher. One of the classes you will enjoy going too. Attendance is not required but you will receive a participation grade at the end of the semester. One presentation on your topic of choice
I took ACCT 4020 online with Mr. Coyne. I would 100% retake the same class with him again if I would have failed. I ended with B- in the class and that was with me busting my ASS the last two weeks. It was hard to keep up the weekly quizzes and homework. Always would respond to emails as soon as possible
Professor Coyne uses his own materials for class. It's a tough class, but you will do well if you read the lectures and complete all of the assignments. He is always available for questions. He wants his students to succeed.
Overall Professor Coyne has been one of my best instructors at the University of Memphis. I appreciated that we didn't have to purchase a textbook, instead Prof. Coyne prepared thorough slides for us to learn from. I imagine this takes more effort, and for me it was a success.
This is one of the hardest and most rude professors I have ever taken. He hardly responded to my emails and wasn't professional when I asked for some assistance with an issue concerning the class. I do not recommend taking this Accounting Systems course from him online, maybe he is better in class.
Dr. Coyne is hard core; however, I deeply respect his passion for the subject and his intensity. In all honesty, I love he challenges her presents to students. He makes you LEARN the material, not just complete busy work for grades. If you take the time to learn the information, ask questions, and read, you will do very well in any course of his.
Taking Accounting Systems online with Dr. Coyne has been great. The content is well-organized, lectures are clear, and schedule is easy to follow. Quizzes and exams are easy if you just read the lectures. He cares about students and will help if you reach out. Easily the most professional instructor at Memphis.
I loved Dr. Coyne for my tax class but I have had a horrendous experience with the Accounting Systems class. I've had a 4.0 in accounting my entire school career, and now I am struggling to maintain a B because I'm not a technology/code nerd. This is a mandatory class so I recommend taking it by itself in the summer- you'll need 6-10 hours weekly.
I learned a lot in Dr. Coyne's class. I really enjoyed his class. He really makes you work for your grade, but you'll learn a lot. I would definitely take his class again, if I could!
Dr. Coyne may be the best, (if not, one of the best) teachers at U of M. His wealth of knowledge and ability to articulate absolutely blows me away. He's extremely well versed in all of the topics discussed in the course. He is also willing to spend extra time with students who need help on assignments. Knowledge is quite attractive... just sayin!
he is a mean and unhelpful teacher. avoid him!!!
I have taken this professor before w/out any issues. He now has a Doctorates & this has fed his ego. He created his own lectures therefore a book is not needed, but BEWARE he enjoys coding & in return this is more of a coding than an ACCT course. He is also arrogant & sends ridiculous emails about repercussions on cheating as if we are stupid.
5 exams (4 section exams and 1 final exam). Exam 4 and final exam are scheduled within 5 days of each other. He didn't give us the remaining exam schedule until November. His emails are very condescending. Does not allow discussion boards so students can't ask each other questions. On the plus side, he's 100% off the textbook.
Initially I was nervous to take Dr. Coyne, mainly due to reading some of the reviews on this site. However, he was one of the most professional and genuine professors I will have during my college career. His depth of knowledge is impressive, and he does his best to share what he knows for his students benefit. I would definitely recommend him.
