Dr. Crowell is very helpful, always accessible in his office and has former experience teaching in high school so he knows how to keep everyone entertained. CHEM1441 is a hard course but Dr. Crowell tries his best on helping out (even giving out extra points at tests sometimes).
He is an amazing professor. He really tries his best to keep class attentive. He is hilarious and has a joke for every class. He is around for students and gives out easy bonus as much as 20 points in tests. It is difficult, but he manages to make it seem easy. Be prepared to do a lot of ALEKS. It is very annoying, but he is fair in duedates.
He is an excellent professor. He helped me learn and really enjoy chemistry concepts that I thought I'd never understand. He wants to help you learn, not just get an A. He's pretty funny too, and you can never ask a stupid question in his class. He's one of those professors that will make you consider switching your major to take more classes.
Easy on the eyes and a great lecturer. Never thought I would enjoy chemistry but he definitely helped make class something I looked forward to. He has chemistry puns and uses Dr. Rogers' notes so it was a win win. I'm actually looking forward to taking biochemistry now that he is teaching it.
Makes chem interesting with his jokes! Chem is difficult but easier with his lectures using Dr. Rogers' set of notes to fill in blanks (purchased at the bookstore for like $14). The textbook is online and found through ALEKS, where you do your homework. There are iclicker questions each class, 4 exams with 20 questions, and a departmental final.
Entertaining professor who knows what he is talking about. Strongly recommend to buy the notes from UTA bookstore. Attend class and do as much practice as you can for an A. Replaces Final with lowest mid term.
Dr. Crowell was amazing. Very clear in what he expects you to know for the tests. He's fair in what he asks on the tests, he will not try to trick you, just think. Going to class benefits greatly. Read the book, study his notes, and do the practice problems he assigns.
Attendance is 5% of grade and notes are fill-in-the-blank. Most people take Crowell because he's attractive but the class is difficult. Extremely homework heavy and exams are hard. He gets distracted really easily so while the class is fun, time is wasted and homework assignments and labs are due before you even learn the material in lecture
Usually, I review my test answers. Here I bubble in 5+ answers per test. He reminds us often, the mult. ch. test answers your most likely mistakes. Aleks (online HW) is so, so much Love chem? have O-chem next? take him! Good guy, knows his stuff, answers questions and teaches well. I believe his testing/HW standards are too zealous for Gen Chem
honestly, this class isn't so bad, it just SO MUCH WORK. The HW system sucks. If you have ever used ALEKS, you know why. Tests are 20 questions, all multiple choice. Study the practice problems from class AND the ones from the textbook. Also, take LAB seriously, it can either really hurt or help you.
Dr. Crowell was awesome! He uses fill-in-the-blank notes which are super helpful. The online homework is somewhat time-consuming. However, his lectures were informative and funny, and he has great examples to work through. He is very honest about what to expect in other Chemistry classes and medical school. He does use the iClicker, though.
I was a final year student before taken chem, needed it to graduate. You got to study for lab quizzes, you go to do lab reports, pre labs and oh yeah Aleks. If youve ever taken Aleks you know what Im talking about. The prof was ok, always gets easily distracted however. If you have the option of taken it somewhere else, take my advice and do it.
Textbook isn't necessary. His lectures are interesting and he's funny. The online homework is a lot, I'm a procrastinator all the way but it's hard to get all of it done by midnight if you wait till the last day. Practice the questions from old tests and from his practice problems because those are exactly what's on the test.
Dr. Crowell seems nice but he isnt a good teacher. He has fill in the blank notes but leaves some sections blank expecting you to know how to do it. He uses iclicker for attendance and ALEKs for homework. First test went bad like half the class failed. Going to take the class next semester with a different teacher.
Professor Rogers 2.0.. Great professor, printed notes, enthusiastic in class. Attendance is extra credit, he usually won't deviate tests from the material on his notes unless he specifically tells you. His FRQs are more intuition-based. Read the book, it helps a lot.
Took him for intro to chemistry. You fill in printed notes and do examples during lecture. He tells you what you need to know for the test, and teaches you exactly how to do it. Attendance is mandatory, but not a second of your time is wasted. We had no homework, and instead we did it during lab time. Effective teaching methods and engages you.
Awesome Professor for MCAT Prep. All information is presented in a precise, efficient and effective manner. Very approachable. Test are not tricky and are similar to past exams. Emphasizes important material in class. There are In class quizzes that are bonus toward your final grade and are similar to exam questions.
the best biochem professor! Very helpful fill in the blank notes.
Professor Crowell is a really nice person, and he does fill-in-the-blank note style. All of his lectures were available on Echo360 outside of class. The notes were pretty straight forward. The grade for the class depended on 2 midterm exams and the final exam, so if you do poorly on one, you don't really have a chance to recover.
Dr. Crowell is a good person, decent teacher but the chemistry department at UTA is very unorganized. 4 tests each 10% of your grade. final is 25% & can replace your lowest test. NO EXTRA CREDIT! He gives 5 extra points on 1 test ALEKS homework doesn' help at all, just busy work. It's used 4 all chem classes. Go google ALEKS reviews you will see.
He is a decent teacher, if you can take his class with a longer time then 50 min DO IT!! all the professors at UTA give the same amount of problems for each test. EX: 50 min lecture 50 min to take a 20 ? test. 1hr 20 min lecture 1hr20min test time for 20 ? . you will need extra time! It's not fair that other classes get more time for the test.
In class, he does fill-in-the-blank style notes. He explains the material relatively well and he goes at a good pace and allows time for questions. There are also Clicker questions as a participation grade. Then there's the horrible ALEKS that doesn't help whatsoever. Lots of practice questions available for studying. Easy class if you work.
Dr. Crowell is a good lecturer and covers what he needs to, but doesnt do many practice problems in class. There are echo360 recordings which help A LOT. He randomly does clicker questions so dont skip class! I found his exams challenging, but plenty of people did well. The chem department does not curve or give EC so do well on the midterms.
His lecture was taught from fill in lecture notes which I liked. Some of the material was really difficult, there was a lot to learn. His tests were only 20 questions long so it wasn't easy to make high test grades. The homework was online (ALEKS) & we had chapters due almost every week. No extra credit was given & this class took a lot of work.
The dude is funny! He makes me want to change my major. He uses his own lecture notes, so the book is not mandatory. I only utilized it for more practice problems. Just show up to class, pay attention, work out the problems with him, and understand "why" you are doing what you are doing and it should be an A. Overall one of my favorite professors.
Do the practice problems and practice tests. Read your notes after lecture, and you should be good for the tests. Tests aren't necessarily hard, but if you do not practice your concepts, you will not do good.
Crowell is one of the best professors I've taken this semester, I have him for 1441 and his lectures are well structured, with fill in the blanks notes which are very helpful and make the textbook unnecessary. However, the class is hard, you have to study if you want to pass and I would suggest going to the SI sessions, I went from a D to an A.
His lectures enjoyable and not boring with hilarious stories to connect to the concept. The fill-in lecture notes are helpful, and textbook is great for extra help. Chemistry is not easy, but you will pass if you study! I got two 100s on the midterms! I studied by doing textbook practice problems, practice problems on back of notes, and old exams.
Read the book in advance and do ALL practice problems. That alone will ensure you get an A in this class. Test averages are generally about a 60 because most people do not do this. Crowell as a professor is excellent. This class requires a lot of time and effort so be ready to commit if you want the A.
Biochemistry is a difficult course. With Dr. Crowell, prepare to read the textbook and do practice problems from the book (assigned, but not for a grade). He gives fill in the blank style notes and records lectures, which is helpful in guiding studies. However, the course is based off 3 unit exams and a final so you have to work hard for an A.
Prof. Crowell was amazing! Not only was he funny, but he also taught all the material really well! There were times where he would ramble BUT anything he didn't get to, he wouldn't put on the test! Also, since the tests are based on lectures there is no real reason to read the book. BTW the school no longer uses ALEKS! Will definitely take again!
Dr. Crowell is amazing. Although this course was tough, he makes it so enjoyable. He is a very relatable man and has a lot of funny stories. As long as you attend class, study your notes, do the homework and read the textbook, you will do just fine! He tests very fairly (although the final exam was tough) and he does not set out to trick you.
Biochem is hard and is a class you will HAVE to put in continuous work in, not just a week before an exam. Great lecturer, well prepared, passionate, and very knowledgeable about material. However, professor lacks capacity to understand and feel for students that experience hardships and will fail them instead of seeing them succeed/help at the end
He makes u feel dumb when you ask questions. Also, tends to go off topic a lot and rush at the end of class to finish the material.
First of all its chem guys cmon theres no easy way to get an A. You have to work using the textbook and there are so many resources available (except the chem clinic really didnt help it seemed like they didnt care to be there). But Crowell is a nice dude and will try to help you as much possible. But in the end its up to you for your grade.
Crowell is passionate about chemistry and very personable. His lectures are very by the book, and make sure to read and do the practice problems. Easy A if you delegate proper time. Chem 2 is a chore, but it builds the foundation for Ochem and Biochem so pay attention. He's good regarding homework and cares about his students. Great in office hours
This professor is so funny! Sometimes he will get side tracked to tell a story from his life, listen. His notes are fill in the blank style which really helps with paying attention in class. His exams are weighted heavily so pray that you do good but he also gives extra study material. He is a really good teacher and cares for his students.
I wish he would answer his emails/messages...
This is fast on a higher level. He expects you to learn an entire chapter in as little as a day before you will be quizzed on it. The quizzes are just 10 questions, a day apart from each other, and worth 75% of your grade. He posted lecture videos on Echo360 from WINTER and just expects you to do everything on your own. Lazy and unfair professor.
This was a 5 week course that was almost impossible. He uploaded his old lectures & expected us to watch an ENTIRE semester worth of Echo videos in a VERY short amount of time. 2 tests per week with only 10 questions & we only had 1 day to learn the material. He was hardly available for help & difficult to get ahold of. Do NOT recommend
do yourself a favor and take the class with rogers, this guy sucks. he's mean, makes you feel dumb, and doesn't respond to emails. lectures don't explain the content well and will always rush in the last 5 minutes to cram all the material
Corwell's notes are fill in the blank, which is what a majority of the chem department does as well. I didn't really like this style because I feel like I don't learn anything. Normally lectured up until the day before the test, which was frustrating because then you're studying last minute as well and feel rushed. Tests are okay.
I really enjoyed Crowell. Others might not because he teaches slow, but I appreciated the extra time given on each topic. Make sure to read!! I really liked his lectures, because he incorporates his experiences and stories into them. He's also so funny. When we switched to online because of the pandemic, he was really understanding! Take him!!!
Took 5 week Summer Class. Lectures were old and inconsistent in ECHO360. 2 weekly 10 question quizzes make up 75 of your grade so study like hell for them. Lab was in LabFlow due to COVID but was easy. Do your practice problems and extra ones and you should be ok. Does not respond very often to email, is only available once a week via Teams.
One of the best professors for chemistry. His lectures are amazing and he uses Rogers' fill in the blank notes. Do the practice quizzes and attend live online lectures and you will do good. Highly recommended!
He spends 85% of lecture going over theories which only makes up less than 20% of his tests. He glazed over the math portion which is the bulk of his tests. Be prepared to teach yourself. He wasnt lenient during corona/online times. Failed by 2 points and he wouldnt round my grade to pass. Take the other chem professor.
As of 2020, he was the only professor who taught Chem 1442, so it's not like I had a choice to choose lol. He talks a lot about his life, which is interesting, but as a student who is struggling and suffering in chem, the stories should be saved for later... also thought our class was cheating because we did so bad... maybe because chem is hard??
Dr. Crowell is THE BESTTTT!!! I have had rodgers (who is such a gem and an amazing professor), however, Dr. Corwell goes a little bit at a slower pace and makes SURE you understand the material. So kind, chose him again after taking his 1400 class!!!
Class isnt bad just watch lectures and regularly do practice problems. Prof isn't understanding. Got mad at students for not being able to take an exam during the huge snowstorm that caused statewide blackouts. He also got mad again at students when he forgot to provide a periodic table for an exam. His teaching skills are alright tho.
Dr. Crowell has shown no empathy to his students. I have emailed him many times and have only gotten ignored. His lectures aren't that informational and I have had to use supplemental material to get by with 50s. Compared to Dr. Rogers this dude has crap exam grades and won't even try to curve or help his students at all. Don't take his class.
He teaches alright but he lacks empathy; didn't feel bad or make any accommodations for students who were going through the snow storm that caused electricity blackouts. Very tough grader; try to read & do LOTS of practice problems to fully understand whats going on. Wish I could've taken this class in person, but lab was easy so it bumped my grade
Take Dr. Rodgers. Crowell doesnt care about whats going on in your life unless its chemistry related. Lacks so much empathy for his students its painful. Sometimes I wish some people wouldnt teach because of the effect it has on so many students. Its costing them time, money, and effort and he couldnt care less. Avoid at all costs.
There is no way that this guy became a professor to actually teach anyone. His lectures are intensely long, overpacked, and at least 1/4 about his personal life (?) At the end of the lectures, he never says goodbye or shows any concern for his students' well-being or education. If he's so great at chemistry, he should really use it somewhere else.
hes an incredible lecturer, but he was snarky when it came to students having issues with internet, especially with the snow storm that hit texas in february. i wish he was nicer, but he is good at what he does.
If you need to take CHEM 1441 I would much rather recommend Professor Rodgers than Crowell any day of the week. If you do not want to mentally exhaust yourself by teaching yourself the entire course material then do not even consider Crowell.
He is a pretty good professor, but does not give much help. It may help if the course was not online. Chemistry is hard in general.. you need to study. He was nice, but did not care if students were going through something. He did not care about power outages during the snowstorm.
I passed after failing with Rodgers. Basically, Crowell had tests worth less and lab/hw worth more. The tests are impossible and don't expect to pass half the time. Insane memorization required to get any good test grades. Getting a 100 in hw and lab is required to pass the class.
Apathetic! When electricity wasn't available for many of his students during the snowstorm, we emailed him that we couldn't take the exam. Told us that didn't sway him even though campus resources were shut down too. He does work out examples in lectures but he doesn't explain a lot of the processes well. He & his vacuum make good background ASMR.
made a very difficult course easy to understand. lecture alone will not help you, you NEED to do practice from the textbook! lectures are entertaining and engaging. tests are just like practice qs. final exam was significantly harder than previous tests, so he gave everyone ten extra points for free. overall, you have to work for an A
Dr. Crowell is actually a really good CHEM professor. This course is hard, so average test grades usually in the 60s range. He is clear in what you need to know and how to study. Do ALL the old test problems he posts because those help a lot with exams. Exams are about 50% conceptual and 50% math. Do well in lab to keep your grade up!
Definitely one of the hardest courses I have ever taken. With that being said, I still made an A. Didnt have much of a life outside of Chem, but with enough work you can do it. Josh cracks me up. I would definitely take him again. He does drop lowest midterm grade which definitely saved me. Exam 3 is super tough.
I would take him for General Chemistry but never for Biochem. It isn't his subject so his lectures are full of mistakes, his exams are never clear, and he can be a bit rude. He's okay, but this professor will make you doubt your science foundation with all the mistakes. I'd recommend taking somebody else. You've been warned!
Took Crowell online for Summer 2021. There's no homework for the 5 week program, so you're only graded by the lockdown browser exams and the labs, the latter of which can be grueling at times. Crowell offers fill-in-the-blank lecture notes, which can be purchased in the bookstore. Lectures were recorded, but the notes cover the exams well.
The lectures are so so important, so skipping them will probably hurt you in the long run, however if you show up you will be fine. He explains things at a good pace, and will explain them differently if you did not understand his first one. I would most definitely take him again for 1442.
Unfortunately, this class was way more difficult than it had to be. This was due to constant mistakes, back and forth from online lectures to in person lectures and more. Do not recommend him for this course, a large percentage of the class FAILED and this was not entirely due to lack of preparation on students ends. He isn't understanding either.
Exams are a big part of your grade. When you ask him for help it feels like you're a burden, and he can be a little rude. He seems like he doesn't care about his students whatsoever. The only positive thing I could say is that he did mention what will be on the exams if you really pay attention in lecture. Other than that, he does the bare minimum.
The kind of professor that just wakes up in the morning for his paycheck. He doesnt care about you at all- not that a teacher should, but he is very rude about it. Just an unhappy person overall. Unorganized and scattered, he knows the material he just doesnt care for his students success. Hes fine for gen chem but dont take for biochem.
Crowel is a pretty good prof. in my opinion. I usually don't show up to his classes because he teaches extremely slow & gets off topic a lot but his prerecorded lecture are straight to point and have everything you need for the exams. The textbook was online & required bc the hw is on there. If you watch the lectures & understand then you will pass
Out of 125 students, about half of them failed with an F and the remaining were D's. These were extremely talented students as well; sadly, this professor was ill-prepared, made many mistakes, and very bias in his grading. I would AVOID at all cost!!! Take Biochem with anyone else BUT HIM. Very rude, apathetic, and does not care for the students.
One of the better gen chem professors. He uses Roger's notes and textbook. Exams are doable since they're similar to problems from the back of lec notes and reviews. Crowell provides a lot of resources for his exams, so DO them. Pay attention to lectures then hw is easy. You got to work for an A.
The prof is extremely interesting to listen to, explains each topic clearly, and is extremely understanding and fair. Every other week or so there is a homework assignment. Other than that, there are basically just exams. A lot of content is covered, some math based, some memorization, so make sure you review decently often.
The tests were straight from the notes and lecture. During lectures he would give us hints about what would show up on the test (histidine). The book sucked so dont open that. Echo360 quality was terrible from either the microphone not working or the recording just flat out not recording.
The professor is not very kind during office hours, and tends to miss class and rely on videos he made in 2020. This course is taught on the fact of if you can solve questions not so much of if you truly understand. Its like the SAT for chemistry; save your time and choose Rogers Crowell does not seem to like his job.
I enjoyed this class! The course grades entirely on exams. He tests pretty much entirely on in-class notes, and lectures. This is so helpful because the book is too in-depth, and his notes makes it clear. I highly recommend going to lectures, because of this! Also, watch AKlectures! Overall, he is a nice guy, and this was a great class.
I didn't like him as a teacher. His method of teaching was so fast paced and he never went into depth. I went to his office hours and came out more confused than I went. A trick I wish i knew sooner was to practice with his old exams cus he tends to repeat questions. No curve, no extra credit and no assignment. 3 exams and a Final.
If you don't work and only go to school, you can pass. If you work and have other responsibilities, don't take him. It's only 4 exams and each have about 20 questions. There will be about 3 questions on the exams he doesn't cover. Some he will briefly touch and the rest he will hint it out during lectures.
He explains the concept very well, but Exams will be spontaneous, last writing questions are worth 50% of the Exam. No matter what you write, if he doesn't like how its worded he will give you a zero. Overall, he's nice as a person and respectful, but his Exam style is bad. 4 EXAMS, that's it. no assignments, no curve, no extra credit.
Joshua Crowell is the professor to chose if structure is important to you. He gives practice tests that if you complete twice you will definitely pass the exam. He teaches as if you were reading the textbook but slightly more interesting. He isn't that personable so just research the problems you have because he will make you feel dumb.
His lectures are easy to follow. His exams closely follow the exam reviews he has posted. Overall I recommend him as a professor; however, he is not very nice when you talk to him one-on-one.
I took him this fall and his lectures are easy to follow up until we get closer to the tests is where he speeds up and confuses everyone. He is not nice outside of class and talk so much during class which makes us miss half the information. He said he got better about that but I don't believe it. If you get the chance, take Rodgers. CLEAVER IS BAD
Crowell taught at a very fast pace which at times was difficult to comprehend the info. Exams were back to back, 2-3 weeks between each. Be prepared to study a ton. He does provide great practice exams and questions that cover most of what will be on the actual midterms/final. I'm not sure how he is one on one but he seemed cool during lectures.
I would not recommend him for CHEM1442 unless you really like chemistry or you're determined to study for hours nonstop. Did the book problems, old tests, note practice problems, reviewed the HWs, etc. However, he puts in random numbers and variables that throw you off during exams. If possible, take Rogers for any chem class really.
The best part of this class is that he replaces your lowest midterm grade with the final. What really helped me with studying is to do the practice problems in the back of the lecture notes and read the textbook since it had problem-solvers. I would use the final exam review from the lecture notes along with reviewing past exams for the final.
Professors Crowell knows the lecture material by hearts. But he expects you to knows the materials. His test is nothing like what his lectures cover. You need to study a lot to pass his class. The good side is that free answer he will give you partial credits has long you write the right stuff down or show you knows the material.
Professor Crowell knows the material by heart, but he is not good at dumbing it down for students who don't really understand the content. He loves theoretical questions and there is barely any math on the exams. He will tell you repeatedly to look back at your CHEM I notes. I ended up dropping the class because he is not a great professor imo.
This professor is very good at what he does but he has the tendency to go off on tangents during lectures. In my opinion, he is not very good at explaining the material to people who have never taken chemistry or people who have little to no knowledge of chemistry. For me, it was too hard to follow his teaching style.
Crowell is very clear from the beginning on what it will take to pass the class. Overall, I liked his teaching style and would take him again. You will have to read the textbook and do all the practice exams to do well in the class.
He goes so fast during class, I watched his recored classes, because going to in person class was a waste of time.
If you take 1400, he does a great job building foundational chem ideas for people who have never taken it. If he taught 1465 I would 100% take him again. He is a jokester and has pretty fun stories to tell, I don't think they take away from lecture. But he also stands on business when needed. He also has a southern twang that made lectures better.
Very enthusiastic about his field, but not a great professor. Goes on long tangents, delaying the course. Study guides for the exams mislead you on what you need to study. Homeworks often cover material not taught in the class. Exams cover small details mentioned in class rather than big concepts. Only saving grace is his availability.
his lectures are the textbook. his notes are based off the textbook. went to class to confirm what i already read in the textbook 99% of the time. Attend lecture for the small instance he gives you a trick to solve a problem, other than that, just read the book in class and do hw problems/txtbook problems. in summary, do all the textbook problems.
Honestly, Crowell is one of the sweetest professors out there. He is very understanding with his students and he really takes the time to explain the work problems. Every day it is a lecture then for the rest of class you work on problems on your own or with a group. Really take advantage of the time to ask questions and study on your own too.
He is passionate about teaching Chemistry and excels at breaking down complex concepts, making learning more accessible and engaging. His approachable and student-friendly attitude creates a supportive environment. He also offered four extra bonus points for completing the course evaluation, showing his commitment to student success.
Amazing at teaching an intro to chem course for those who need refreshers or barely know about chemistry.
The best professor I've ever had, hands down. Its rare to find a professor who loves teaching, and even rarer to find a professors whose passion is teaching. I took him in a 5 week course which was really challenging, but I couldn't have done it without him. Enroll in his courses! You will not regret it. He rounded my 88.0 to an A- also :) I miss him
Definitely one of my favorite professors, that wants nothing but to see his student succeed, he helped me understand the basics of chemistry after having trouble in my previous years. Assignments are given and due by the end of lab but him and the TA's will help so much if you're having trouble, don't be scared to ask questions, he's happy to help!
Dr.Crowell is an amazing chemistry professor where its obvious he knows what his talking about. Lectures are short and sweet and get to the point. Answers all questions and clearly states what he expects on his exams and classwork. With him I have a clear understanding of the basis of Chemistry where it will build your foundations!
If I had the chance, I'd take every chemistry class with him. He really shows a solid understanding of chemistry. His lectures are brief and to the point. He's funny and super nice. Just follow his instructions, and you'll find it's a pretty easy class overall.
Uses Rogers style notes during lectures. The information is not as difficult compared to organic chem. Homework is a completion grade and is usually harder than actual exams. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he gives extra credit if you attend. Can be hard to predict what will be on the exam since there aren't reviews, but they are reasonable.
