bulldozers ... so many bulldozers
Well, I think he's a pretty good prof. Makes pretty complicated ideas a lot more clear, and illuminates somewhat esoteric and interesting ideas in texts. He doesn't go on any wild speculative tangents, so he doesn't say anything ridiculous, but doesn't just point out the obvious either. Has a really good lecture style too, very conversational.
Good prof, can go on WAYYYY too long about one concept and then blast through 4 in the same about of time though. His drawings are amazing
Really funny guy. Can be quite repetitive. Should be an artist. Knows his stuff and is supportive. Read your chapters! Read the postings on Blackboard! I didn't and my mark reflects that. Also, one of his TAs was a really harsh marker. David something...Soap opera hair.
Good teacher. Essay topics were a bit convoluted. The lectures tended to drag, but there were some terribly excellent moments, highlighted by wonderful (stick-figure) pictoral representations and metaphors. A generally great professor, really knows his stuff.
Knows his stuff. Likes to engage the class by involving students in his conversational lecture. I'll be taking another class of his in the W2007 semester, and look forward to it.
Gives great lectures for easy notes. Always repeats himself gives odd but good examples so easy to follow and understand. A nice guy all around. A bit brutal on MC questions on tests.
For an option course, he made it interesting for me. Very good lectures, and he is very interesting.
The most approachable and probably nicest prof ive had to date. Made complex readings, very simple and straight forward. Encouraged class discussion, and always kept class entertaining. Pretty funny guy.
He is an amazing prof! Very easy to approach and willing to help you in almost anyway he can. He wants you to succeed as much as you want to.
The best prof ive had so far. Makes the class very interesting and is the most friendly prof ive ever met. I got a chance to get to know him well. Encourages class discussion and outside the box thinking. Takes complex concepts and simplifies them so that any one can understand it. You would be missing out in not taking atleast one class with Goldy
hes great, funny and nice
Best prof i have had so far
Great professor! Always kept the class entertained but political philosophy isn't my cup of tea...
Good prof. Kept the class interesting.
The mark of a good prof... actually making political philosophy interesting.
Dr. Goldstein teaches similar philosophers each year, so I credit him for keeping things interesting. Relative to other instructors, he is sympathetic and rarely condescending. I never hesitated to ask for help with comprehending the course material. Overall an interesting course taught by an open-minded (necessarily for such a topic) prof.
Made classic political philosophy as painless as possible. Super nice guy. Very helpful.
What a prof. I found the class quite difficult and dry but like the poster below me, he made it as good as it could be. Pretty demanding class but he's a great professor. The TA Josh Haase was the best TA I've had yet, he went as far as offering Skype meetings when he was sick. Good class.
Fantastic prof. Lots of information to cover and lots of text to read, but since this course is based on original texts, class is mandatory. He explains everything in such detail and beyond the text, much of what you would have never understood yourself. Easily the best prof I've had for a course ever.
This was the best class I have taken! Extremely helpful and approachable; Goldstein is always happy to discuss philosophy or to answer questions. You must be expecting to put in the effort for this class, if you stay on top of the readings and attend class it is incredibly easy to get an A (plus since it's a full year class it's worth the effort!)
THE smartest guy in the room. If you've ever read his stuff on new natural law theory it is clear, concise and perceptive. Anyway, excellent prof, exams are awesome and actually fun (though challenging).
Excellent prof. Enthusiastic lectures, incredibly approachable, extremely smart. Wasn't interested in political philosophy in the beginning, but his enthusiasm for the discipline really rubs on you. Highly recommended.
The best prof in the history of U of C. He's so helpful, patient and nice. Super knowledgeable and you can go to him for anything. He sets you up for success, and you will do well as long as you put in the effort. I have taken several classes with him, and the same applies to all of them.
Dr. Goldstein is there to help if you need, willing to answer questions and usually cracks a few jokes in class. He is very engaging with his students, and he will notice if you are trying to participate.
His lectures are really great ti listen to. I found myself really enjoying how he went on about different ideas. At times he rambled on at it is sometimes hard to follow. If you read the texts it will help and you need to for most of it. In POLI 310 it was a 2 semester course, but it was good even for how long it was just because it was always fun.
Absolutely incredible professor. The most approachable, brilliant, caring, helpful and dedicated professor I have had in my whole university experience. He makes political philosophy come to life, shows its relevance in our everyday lives, and inspire you to become engage in the coursework. His lectures and assignments are so thoughtful.
An amazing prof, fantastic lectures, very engaging. Clearly cares about students and very knowledgeable, good at explaining the heady conceptual stuff
I loathe philosophy and it would be so much worse with any prof other than Dr. Goldstein. He is kind, caring, and enthusiastic. His explanations of Ancient text in lecture are fantastic and his midterms, papers, discussion groups have all been very fair. He also makes an effort to learn and remember everyone's name, which just shows how he cares.
POLI 310 is rough, but Goldstein makes it as good as it can be. He is a compassionate professor who genuinely cares about his students. If you are going or need to take 310, Goldstein is the guy you want to take it with.
Dr. Goldstein is a terrific teacher and a really nice guy. He's very friendly and approachable towards his students, and I really liked his class. Although his lectures for me could be challenging to understand, he is a great man, and the grading standards were always fair and reasonable.
He has a very good grasp on the content and material which is great. He is also very engaged and energetic which is really good because it makes it easy to pay attention. The finals can be a little tough since you have to write so much but if you have been attentive in class, took down notes, and read the readings you should be good.
Dr. Goldstein has been my favourite prof at the university. He is perfect for political philosophy. He knows everything there is to know, and makes the information interesting and funny. If you get the chance to take a class with him I would take it. One of the rare professors that actually makes a total effort and cares about his students.
Goldstein could read the phone book and make it interesting. Participation is often mandatory in his classes (d2l discussion boards) and he assigns a fair bit of reading, but he makes political philosophy come alive. I took this class specifically because he was teaching it and highly recommend him to anyone looking to take a POLI class.
Dr Goldstein is without a doubt the best professor in the political science department. His lectures are interesting, fun and actually really educational. His lectures stay in your head all day. Do your readings, talk with him about your papers and enjoy this gem. You'll never find a professor this fantastic.
Engaging lecturer, really cares about the subject; fails to realize students have competing demands and priorities outside of his class. Manages time poorly in lectures and then posts additional notes to teach yourself the class. Expected us to post in online discussion groups 5x per week, but did not state this in outline. TA marked SUPER HARD.
Good prof Except reallyupsetting how 10% of final grade is based on discussion posting that are loosely explained on what is required in them but graded extremely hard. Not to mention some students write essays for their response leaving everyone else with nothing to say. The proff explained responses should only be a few sentences but no listening
Goldstein is great and 310 is a good course. He is for sure an expert on the texts and the concepts of political history/philosophy. The discussions were actually great imo and helped the class understand the material more simply. Those who are complaining about the discussions are usually those who put no effort into reading the books.
One of the best profs ive had this guy is hilarious and very engaging you will not be bored! If you don't do the readings, show up to class, or participate you will struggle.
Dr. Goldstein is as good as they come, one of the best profs in the Political Science Department. He is an incredibly dynamic lecturer, cares for his students, and is genuinely hilarious. While he makes you work for your grade, you will not regret taking any class with him - absolutely fantastic.
Not super helpful. Content isn't the easiest either. Do not recommend
This year was all on Zoom yet Dr Goldstein delivered the most engaging, fun, and informative lectures I've had in my 4 years of uni. He's intelligent, passionate, and really funny, which all contribute to the enjoyment of the class. He's also really understanding that students have a lot going on. Amazing prof!!
Dr. Goldstein is my FAVOURITE professor! He is so funny, his lectures were truly a joy to attend. His grading is fair, and the class isnt super easy. Youll need to do the work. However, it was BY FAR my favourite class of the year. I cant wait to take another with him in the fall. A true UofC gem!
Dr. Goldstein is by far one of the best professors at UofC. He made learning political philosophy great, and sparked my interest in the subject. He's more than just a prof, though, and genuinely cares about his students. There were many times he helped me with personal issues throughout the semester. I recommend him fully.
I never knew how much I liked political philosophy until I took this course. Initially, it just to fill degree requirements, but I ended up connecting with the material. While a lot of the readings can be dry, Dr. Goldstein did an excellent job of explaining and giving background. Relatively easy assignments and tests if you put the effort in.
Lectures were really great, especially considering the subject matter Could have been a really boring class, BUT Goldstein makes it interesting and engaging! First half of the class focused on Plato and Aristotle, was a lot like a philosophy class with more politics mixed in. Be wary though 310 is a full year class and you need to take both A and B
Hands down, the best prof in the university. You think about his lectures even days after he gives them. To be able to take this relatively dry material and make it this interesting takes skill. Super understanding and will accommodate for any issues students might encounter throughout the semester.
Dr. Goldstein is one of the most approachable and inspiring people in this university. There aren't enough words to describe how amazing he (and his TA is for the 2021-2022 school year) is. Highly recommend taking one of his courses!
Cannot imagine how I would survive/enjoy a political theory course without him making it interesting, fun, and approachable as a prof, unlike the other prof who teaches political philosophy. Discussion posts are fun, and he is very kind and approachable after class with questions or advice. Such a great class! He really brings dry content to life.
Goldstein is the best lecturer I've had so far. He really brings to life the history of political philosophy and shows you why it is still relevant--perhaps even the most relevant political subject still. Only downside is the exams are very tough. They're fair, but should be take home style since philosophy requires contemplation.Still fantastic.
Would give 5/5 if I didn't get rickrolled.
Goldstein and his TA Miss Elizabeth are some of the best instructors I have ever had. They were both very accommodating to students and genuinely cared. A lot of assigned readings, but the lectures are very in depth so you can afford to skim through readings because Goldstein has amazing lectures and makes rather boring material enjoyable.
Dr. Goldstein is honestly the funniest, most caring, and brilliant person in the department. Just a really good human, who wants people to suceed and have some fun and a couple of laughs along the way.
Prof. Goldstein is very funny and nice. The coursework is manageable.
Dr. Goldstein is one of the most loved professors on campus for a reason. Not only are his lecture amazing, but he is also a great person overall. He is a wonderful role model for students.
Goldstein is by far the best teacher I've ever had. Funny and exciting, extremely knowledgable, caring about students, just fantastic all around. His classes are reading and lecture-heavy, but you'll want to go to every lecture and the readings are fascinating. If you can, take his classes.
Literally the best professor in POLI at UofC. Lectures without powerpoints so be sure to show up to class as he does not record lectures either. The only prof I've had that can just lecture for the whole time without slides and still remain engaging for the whole time. Great feedback on assignments and you know exactly what he wants in them.
Goldstein is incredible. Lectures are very important to do well in the class but they are some of the best lectures I've had in University. Class is pretty easy with some tricky questions on the quiz. Only downside is he fell behind in the schedule a bit and had to cut content from the class. IF YOU'RE NOT SURE, JUST TAKE HIS CLASS HE'S GREAT.
There is a reason why Dr. Goldstein is so loved and respected by everyone on campus. He is so kind, helpful, and understanding. Make sure to attend lectures because the lectures are all that you get! Take this class or any class with him and I am sure that you will enjoy it! My favorite prof at uofc.
Phenomenal. A crazy amount of readings, but nothing unusual for a senior level seminar. Discussions grade what you know, not what you don't know. Papers are tricky but he will be there to help you through all of them. Make use of his help cause he will help you succeed.
Spending a year with Goldstein was a very easy thing to do. He is a great lecturer, and extremely caring. I would 100% recommend introducing yourself personally, because he is very willing to talk outside of class times if needed. While there is homework every other week, it takes only 10 min a day to complete. One of the best in the department.
Literally the best professor to to ever exist. Only Goldstein can lecture the entire class with no powerpoints behind him and yet make class so engaging and interesting. His passion for the content just makes being there a lot more fun and he is always so caring when you are in need of any help - please take his class if you can!
His whole demeanor makes you actually wanna come to class. Super kind and caring prof who really goes out of his way to make sure you understand what's going on and how you can do good. Overall a great individual.
Great, caring prof. Excellent at explaining material/readings. Enjoyable experience.
Goldstein taught me in two classes and was my supervisor for grad school. Great person to talk to and really deep thinker on all the political philosophy material. If you can take a class with him, any class, I highly recommend it.
Goldstein is the highlight of the poli sci department. He makes his lectures entertaining and you want to attend. I wish his classes werent so hard to get into, because i would gladly have him teach me everything.
Dr. Goldstein is an incredible professor who is very kind, caring, and passionate about what he teaches. If you pay attention to lectures, take notes, and go to office hours he is very willing to help you to succeed in his courses.
As always, Goldstein is amazing. By far the best PoliSci professor at the UofC. Like his other classes (310A/B) his classes are super reading heavy. However the lectures are fantastic, like an adult story time, and his classes are based around papers which are fun to write and research. Taking a Goldstein class should be a requirement to graduate.
Stay gold Goldstein
amazing professor. he made lectures as entertaining ancient books can be. he drew diagrams, threw in drama, and created engaging discussions. He is INCREDIBLY insightful with feedback, super understandable, and honestly an amazing prof. This class really made me reflect and re evaluate my life. hands down, an amazing prof.
All your work is marked by the teaching assistant, a grad student and stingy marker. Having a ta makes it easier on the prof's work load but REALLY DISAPPOINTED that he doesnt contribute more effort towards our grades.
Awesome Prof!
He's great, he doesn't have lecture slides but its easy to adjust to. The discussion posts are easy and the material overall is interesting.
Had him for poli 326 and wasn't used to his lecture style but now I am and POLI 328 is my favourite class this semester. He is engaging and knowledgable, and he involves the class in discussions. His course outline is one of the best and he is a fair grader. However I don't like how the class gets split into 2 sections getting different assignments
I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR SO MUCH! I try to get into his poli sci classes every chance I get. His lectures are so engaging and easy to focus on. Honestly, he's probably in my top 3, if not everyone's top 3 poli sci professors. TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU CAN! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
Love him, read the books cause I didn't at the start and kind of flopped. TAs were also great.
Wonderful prof, passionate about what he's teaching about, relates it to things going on as well. If you're taking his class, make sure you can type well, he talks at 65wpm and repeats key points, TAs are helpful and know the content well. If you have even a mild interest in political philosophy, take the class and just keep up with assignments
Dr. Goldstein is the jewel of the Political Science department here. He clearly loves what he teaches and knows his stuff incredibly well. Not only that, he might just be one of the kindest individuals I have ever met. I've never heard Goldstein use so much as a slightly mean tone with anyone. Take as many classes with Dr. Goldstein as you can.
Many long discussion posts equate small amount of final grade. No slides, if you are not an auditory learner, you're on your own. Exams include joke questions difficult to understand. The final mainly focused on concepts that were taught in the last two weeks but was worth 35% of grade. Above a 90 is impossible, attending class guarantees nothing.
Dr. Goldstein is incredibly kind and clearly loves his job. The topics aren't inherently the most thrilling, but he puts so much effort into making them fun and engaging. The workload in this course and 326 is quite manageable and the discussions helped solidify the content. GOATstein is an absolute gem!
Goldstein is kind and passionate, but his teaching style is poor. He provides no additional resources for support other than the main text. Lectures are mentally exhausting; he never uses slides and just talks, occasionally uses the chalkboard for visuals. TA grading is strict, often defaulting to an A- with no constructive feedback.
He is nice and the lectures were fun. However, the major downside is his grading and tests. His exams are unnecessarily difficult and weird. Components of the course are framed with the attitude "not even Hobbes could get an A+ on this," which, in my opinion, is a poor approach to teaching. There should be clear, achievable standards for success.
Goldstein is an amazing prof, he really cares and has very indepth lectures. However the variance in TA marking is frustrating. For the final however he is kind and understanding often including bonus points.
This prof is scary. Everyone I knew said he was going to be easy and at one point I believed them, but that final was not easy at all. 35% final on the last two weeks? Foul. The TAs are hard markers and you'd assumed Goldstein would lighten the load, but that's not true, he's just like them. Getting above a 90% on anything is rare. Best of luck!
Dr. Goldstein is great, his lectures are engaging and he wants his students to succeed. HOWEVER, POLI326 isn't like other 200-300 poli classes. You will have to work hard for a good grade in this class. You need to come to lectures because there are no slides, I would recommend talking to your TAs and make sure you keep up with the readings.
This class is not easy. Goldstein is a good prof, and teaches philosophy well, but you have to put in a lot of work and truly understand the concepts from the readings and how Goldstein explains them in lectures. It is lecture heavy, and Goldstein uses a ton of humour, which you have to know the punchline for, cuz he will ask questions on it.
