Very enthusiastic about economics. Tests are hard and he Is kinda frantic when teaching. Teaches quickly but wants to help his students.
Very good teacher, wants you to do well, however, Test are really hard but he pulls questions from the homework. Notes are confusing so I suggest you take your own notes from the book
He's a a good teacher for the most part. He goes over a lecture during class which is usually hard to understand, so you have to take some time outside of class to really understand the material to do well on the tests. He has 3 big exams throughout the year, people average around mid 70s, but if you study hard you should earn a B or A.
Josh is a funny, nice guy who clearly loves Economics and knows what he's talking about. There are 525 total points available, but he only scores the course out of 500, so there are 25 free points. Half the points you need for an A can come from homework and participation. There are 3 tests and he drops the lowest one, and then a cumulative final
Dr. Hess made microeconomics interesting and I would definitely recommend taking him over other Econ teachers here. He made lectures fun and was always super excited to teach. He drops the lowest test grade and two lowest quiz grades so there was a lot of leeway. The tests were somewhat tough but overall not bad if you pay attention to lectures.
His handwriting is hard to read sometimes. The power points he gives you don't really help. The clicker questions are easy but his test and the homework is difficult. He's a nice guy but a little strict. Reachable outside of class. If you put in a lot of work you'll be fine, you have to study a lot. He aims for the average in his class to be a C.
Attendance isn't mandatory but when you go you get extra credit. Must buy an clicker and only really need to buy the access code for launchpad. He drops your lowest of 3 exams you take before the final. He tries to work with you, you just have to put in the effort. He will prob never cancel class and you never get out early but its whatever
He drops your lowest test grade before the final, gives easy participation points if you show up and answer iclicker questions, and tests and homework were very straightforward. I recommend attending class. He did his best to make lectures fun for everyone and was always willing to help you if you needed it. I would take him again.
Hess is a great person. I was not a huge fan of his teaching style its all powerpoint but the class was 150 people so what else was he gonna do. He is a really funny guy and super approachable but the material is rough. I had to study a lot. His grading style is so easy to understand and if you put in effort you will pass.
I had to retake Micro and had him. He was a astrophysicist and then decided to go back to school and got his doctorate in Economics. He is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's easily accessible and always willing to help. He really cares about his students. Not a big fan of his teaching style and I had to study a lot but overall amazing.
He has a sense of humor that I find offensive. He purposely makes his exams harder than they need to be. His goal is for the class average to be a C. Don't take him unless you really love Econ.
Very tedious grader, not very helpful when you have a question. Doesn't explain the graphs very well.
Professor Hess definitely understands econ but he expects you to know everything as well. He teaches super fast and doesn't really explain the material. Pretty much have to teach yourself from watching youtube videos.
He's a good guy, however, his lectures aren't very useful when preparing for test. Test are difficult, and you have to teach yourself material using the book and youtube videos before exams. Not very accessible outside of class and doesn't respond to emails when you ask for help with material.
He is very caring. During his lecture, he usually goes to students to ask if a lecture is difficult and they understand or not. He always tries to improve himself as well as his lecture. This course is difficult in some ways but he makes it easier. You should read the textbook before classes and do the practice homework and I guarantee you get an A
Hess is a pretty cool guy. He is sincerely interested in the topics he teaches and tries to inspire that passion in his students. His grading also isn't that bad and he gives several opportunities for you to cushion your grad a little. I personally find his teaching style helpful but Ive always liked power points. His humor also isn't that bad.
Hess is an awesome professor and a pretty cool guy. He gives you so many opportunities to earn extra points and do well in his class.
He didnt really prepare us for tests. He is a nice person and is pretty funny but just not a great professor. The final was cumulative and he didnt give us any sort of review. His handwriting is really bad and he moves quickly through lectures. Sometimes hed keep us past time and would get mad if we left. He took a long time to post final grades
Dr. Hess will definitely make you work for a good grade. His lectures are usually pretty interesting and he gives good examples but it is a challenging class and there is no getting around that. He will help you however he can in office hours though and he appreciates the students who talk to him and try their best.
Hess is great. He really wants you to grasp economics. He does however, have awful handwriting, and can move fairly fast (the fast pace could be due to a week of cancelled classes due to weather). His tests are multiple choice, but they are not necessarily easy. He is always accessible and pretty funny. He is a good professor, but you have to try.
I liked Hess! Even though the material was challenging, Hess was really cool and his attitude made the class less boring. There are a lot of iclicker questions and we did not have any homework, only exams, which I normally got in 70 range on all of them.
He's a good professor, but there is a lot of homework he hasn't said yet. We can't finish our homework.
If you can ignore the fact that hes a know it all and likes to prove this almost every class- youll enjoy him. He really cares about teaching econ, wants you to know the stuff & is always accessible online and irl. The HW is on quizlet & the tests are mostly questions from the practice homeworks but still tricky so study. Most people get a B.
Honestly, Dr. Hess is such a smart professor, however, he is very condescending to the students at times and his lectures are very boring. Did not enjoy sitting in his class, but for some odd reason, he feels the need to put questions on the test that aren't on blackboard. Not surprised. Very smart though.
Although Hess comes off as a know-it-all, he's a smart guy and passionate about economics. The class is points based and he drops your lowest exam. Homeworks are on quizlet, and the tests are challenging, but questions come straight from practice homeworks. He makes you work hard for an A, but I think he's one of the better professor options.
Hess does come off as a know it, but he wants to make sure you thoroughly know your material. The class is point based (525 point cap) he does drop the lowest of 3 exams, the lowest hw, and lowest discussion board, and the final is cumulative. You can quizlet the hw and fills in his lecture notes in class. I failed 2 of the 3 exams and made a B.
Hess knows a lot. He care his students, if you do the homework and understand every questions, you will be fine
Great guy, super smart. You will have to work hard for an A but it isnt impossible. Fast paced but he really knows his stuff
if you asked me anything about econ right now i wouldnt know it. i got a good grade in the class because of extra credit and curves on exams. I liked Dr. Hess' lectures; he's funny and cares for his students, but i never really grasped the concepts. he's a good teacher if you have some idea about basic econ (i didnt). i do recommend him though
For an intro class this was extremely difficult. The lectures were very complex and boring, and I felt like half the time the material on the test was stuff we never went over in class or in the homework. Do your homework, participate with iclicker, and you will be fine. Funny guy.
Honestly, a pretty cool guy. Cares about his students and genuinely wants you to do well. If you understand the material on the homeworks and the practice tests, you will do well on the actual tests.
It's a tough class regardless, but Hess really tries to make sure everyone in the class gets the material. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I can't imagine trying to understand calculus and econ on my own. Tests are online and are basically the homework/quiz questions. Apply yourself and you'll be fine.
One of my favorite professors, challenging but fair. Hardest questions he goes over will be on the exam be sure to learn them inside and out they weigh the heaviest but he prepares you for it. GO TO his office hours if you need help hes likely to ignore you in any other setting. Do all of the Pearson assignments a few times and you will ace it
i think he is a very nice guy but not my favorite professor. He is funny and interesting however his lectures are so hard to follow and can be really boring if you are not super into economics.
This is the first rating of ECON/ENVR 548. Others in your major can help your decision. I disliked only 2 exams, less multiple choice than other classes I had, both heavily weighted, final is cumulative, less MC on HW so I do not learn that my math is wrong, and used TopHat more than Blackboard. I liked the curve and not using online proctoring.
Very sloppy for this course. His self-written textbook was poorly written, and the book, quizzes, exams, etc. were riddled with vital typos and glitches. Hess wasted class time covering hw despite posting solutions online, and he taught so slowly (e.g. getting caught up in teaching BASIC algebra) that we didn't even get to the climate change unit.
Prof Hess is a pretty good professor. He is pretty funny and tends to crack jokes every now and then. His exams are pretty easy and get straight to the point of the material that has been covered. Just make sure you do the homework and the exams are pretty similar! Homework due typically once a week and good opportunities for extra credit
This class is lecture heavy with pretty useless lectures. I learned a lot more from the tophat notes than any live sessions. He purposely makes the exams too long and difficult to finish in the allotted time and then just curves the exam to prevent cheating. What? He's not very lenient with homework even when he has made mistakes. Don't take
Professor Hess was a pretty good teacher and the class wasn't too bad. I enjoyed his lectures and he's funny and does care about his students. Attendance wasn't mandatory so I taught myself quite a few things with the textbook and that also worked out well. He drops some grades and makes it pretty easy to get an A if you work hard.
If your new to economics, don't take Hess. He thinks that everyone knows as much econ as he does. He goes too fast during lecture, exams are insanely difficult and he curves the grade so it makes him look like an average professor. Dont take hess, your in for a mess...
I can't stand Hess. His lectures make no sense and at the beginning of the semester he literally said that he doesn't care about your grade. He allows you the opportunity to take exams online with lockdown browser but if you have an issue with it and you email him about it, you'll get a smart aleck answer. Unhelpful, arrogant, and just not good.
Joshua Hess is a terrible professor. He speeds through lectures and doesn't care if his students can grasp the material. He is the worst professor I have had in my academic career. He has told us that he does not care about his students grades. He also makes corny jokes that nobody laughs at. He administrates his course on Teams rsther than BB.
Professor Hess is the worst professor that I have ever had. He does not care about anyones grades. He rushes through all of the lectures to try and get done in our class time. He expects to get info we did not cover in class on our own time and expects us to know it for the tests. If you have to or want to take ECON 224, stay away from Hess.
Dont let the positive ratings fool you, this guy is awful. If you havent taken economics before dont take josh tests are insane everyone is failing the course. He needs to find a new profession.
Joshua Hess is one of the worst professors I have ever seen in my entire life. On the first day of class he told our section, "I don't care if your family died, I'm not letting you do a retake". Additionally he is an incompetent teacher that wastes lecture time by going off on pointless tangent instead of teaching the course material.
The website wouldn't let me buy the access code, he refused help and didn't care. He thinks everyone worships economics and knows as much as he does. He refuses to help with issues for lockdown browser because he "doesn't know anything about it" as if we haven't been in covid times for 18 months now. Makes passive aggressive comments that are rude
If you are looking to take ECON 224 I would recommend you look to other professors not named Joshua Hess. It would seem he cares more about spewing off information during class than making sure students are actually understanding what he is saying. When it comes to needing help he might be the worst professor I've ever seen.
I have never taken a class with a professor who is more unable to provide adequate help to students than Joshua Hess. When you ask for help he will usually respond with a backhanded email. He is unable to use technology, I once sat in a class for 45 minutes watching him try to get the projector to work. If you take Hess you will be making a mistake
I have never in my life had a worse teacher. I have always been a very good student but his class was absolutely HORRIBLE. He is so rude when you ask him questions on literally anything that has to do this the class. Told us he did not care about us or our grades on the first day and boy he was right. I had to drop his class because I had no help.
It takes him 3 hours to lecture a chapter, it takes me an hour to teach myself the chapter, and I teach myself better than he teaches me. If you're math minded, you can make an A, but I relied solely on the online software due to lack of lecture quality. Grading is straightforward but exams are hard (curved though), be prepared. Do not recommend.
terrible professor even worse guy, very unprofessional in responding to emails with one or two words.. His class was brutal.. exams purposely made hard so he can curve them to make him look good.
RUN! He doesn't respond to email questions and if he does you will get 1-2 words. Lack of professionalism. Very unclear what will be on the exams. I taught myself everything for this class and have to put in hours of work outside class just to get above a failing grade on a test (and I took this class in high school and did great). Take ANYONE else
He made the tests incredibly challenging and curved them to make him look good
Look - I failed every test and he curved them up so ridiculously much that I made above a 100% (if that's any indication of how difficult the tests are). BUT - I made an A. Horrible feedback, can't answer a question directly to save his life. I would recommend using textbook/Achieve rather than even watch his lectures (not helpful at all).
The best decision I made was to stop going to class. Im serious. As soon as I read from the textbook and used achieve my grades went up. Hes sarcastic, will not change grades, and is not flexible at all. If you have a question youre better off asking someone in the class rather than him. Econ itself was nice though.
all I can say is good f****** luck if you have to take professor hess. His test are ridiculously hard and it is impossible to study. While he does curve like 20 points its still an awful class and he does not care about your grade- he will tell you this the first day. most of my class of 200 was failing and like 20 dropped
Do not take. I repeat do not take! Worse Professor at this school. He does not care about students success. Better to just stay back at dorm and watch Economic videos. If you email him questions he gives pathetic one word responses. Really does not know that much about the topic to begin with. Grinch like personality, honestly feel bad for the guy.
I have never taken an econ class before and this one was of no help to me. I had to teach myself most of the material because the entire class was spent listening to long and confusing lectures. I do not recommend this class if there are other options available.
Going to class isn't really helpful. I failed every test but he curves them by like 20 points. Makes it very clear he does not care about your grade and will do nothing to help you. His class is passable, but you will not learn much. This was my first time taking econ and I feel like i learned next to nothing.
Professor Hess tells you at the very beginning that he doesn't really care about your grade. He said that he never had professors that would help him out while he was working throughout college, so he does the same. He has 4 main tests and a makeup test that he allows you to take. Would not wish him on my worst enemy.
Not sure why Hess as such terrible reviews, he isn't the best teacher, but as long as you put in time studying before the exams, you will be fine and all exams are curved.
He does not care at all about what you do. Basically, you get out of the class what you put into it. If you never go to class and never take notes, you aren't going to do well. He drops the worst 5 or 6 homework grades and has a makeup exam. But he will not ever make any exceptions for late work or missed exams. Does not matter if someone died
I really enjoyed him. If you have any passion for economics, please take him. He is tough but if you are willing to do a little bit of work, you can do fine. There is a makeup test and drops 6 lowest hw's.
His class is not too difficult. If you read the textbook you'll do fine. Absolutely does not accept late or missing work but has built-in extra credit opportunities. He goes off on tangents sometimes in lectures; he was really funny but I learned much more from reading the textbook and doing homework. Easy class if you put in some effort.
I absolutely can not recommend Dr. Hess enough. He specifically said he will never read Rate my Professor reviews but I wish he would. His lectures became the highlight of my day and there was multiple times I would just die laughing from his jokes. The content is made exciting by him and he is very straightforward with his policies.
I absolutely loved Dr. Hess! So far one of my favorite profs. He applies concepts to real world examples which is really helpful. He posts his lectures so you're able to rewatch. He's a really funny guy & he's super clear on his policies. He keeps your 10 highest homework scores and there's built in extra credit. Can't recommend him enough!
Professor Hess is awful, he is rude and un wanting to help anyone. I asked him multiple questions and he acted like I was stupid for asking. He replies with one word and takes points off your grade if you repeat a question. He is disgusting and not a good teacher.
Dr. Hess is probably the best professor I've had here so far. He makes his lectures interesting, and gives plenty of study materials for exams. I never got below a 92% and Im normally like a B student. Overall VERY COOL GUY and not that challenging of a class if you just take the time to study and understand the homework
Professor Hess is a nice guy who is very passionate about the stuff he teaches. It is not an easy class, but you can tell he really tries his best to get the content across. Only counts 10 of the highest 16 homework grades, which is nice. And some built in participation extra credit. Overall good prof and good course.
Hess has a bad rep but honestly as long as you do the work you can easily get an A. The best advice I can give is to do the LearningCurves for extra credit and do the practice tests before exams!! The exams are easy if you do the practice exams and the questions are very similar (sometimes the same exact questions). Lectures are recorded and posted
He gets bad reviews because his teaching style is not for everyone. He's an amazing professor but his class is very hard. You need to do a lot (and I mean a lot) of studying on your own if you want to get a good grade. His lectures and notes are literally amazing and great for studying. He isn't flexible whatsoever so don't even bother asking.
Dont take this professor
Whatever you do, do not take Econ w professor Hess.
Far and away the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. Has absolutely no idea how to organize and teach a class. This class is singlehandedly going to ruin my GPA.
Dr. Hess is a GREAT lecturer and you can tell he puts thought into how to explain upper level economic concepts in a way that makes sense. He designs his course so that you are set up for success if you're willing to put in the effort. The class hasn't been easy it has been straightforward with no trick questions, which is how a class should be.
Go in person to his lectures and take notes you will do well. Make sure you do and understand the homework, only ur best 10 of 16 count toward your grade. There is a midterm and a final and the best way to study for them is to make use of the content he provides in Top Hat (read through the topics and do the practice problems).
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. DO NOT take Econ with Hess. This class is going to ruin my GPA.
Hess's teaching style relies heavily on iclicker questions that are graded for extra credit. The most annoying thing about them is that he quizzes us on content before he even teaches it in his lecture. He also goes through slides and content way too fast and has to curve every test because the average is so low.
This class will make your lifespan go down by 10 years. Don't do it.
At first glance, Hess's syllabus scared me. Two exams counting for 90% of the grade. However, he curves the exams heavily. Not sure if this is due to me going to class and others not, but I received an A without studying for the midterm or final.
Like most large-lecture professors he has rules and there aren't exceptions, but the rules are clearly laid out with lots of ways to make them more forgiving to the student if you just read the syllabus. Do all the extra credit, take the practice tests, in-person lectures are better, if you have questions just ask him he is very good at clarifying
I found Dr. Hess to be an amazing person but his teaching style didn't work for me. He weighs heavy on his tests and while attendance isn't mandatory, missing lectures can lead to missing a lot of key information. I know a lot of people that loved him as a teacher but it doesn't work for everyone.
He drops 10 homeworks and is very clear about his grading criteria. He has two options for extra credit (one or the other). Tests are quite difficult but the class is overall quite hard. Classes are recorded but he encourages you to attend. Uses iClicker for every class. He is very funny and obviously intelligent but not the best teacher (sorry)!
I really loved this professor. yes he was tough and the exams were hard. But he truly cared about his students and wanted everyone to do well. Even though he taught a large lecture, he always made it a point to talk to everyone and and make sure they understood the material. In order to do well, you have to be responsible and motivated to do work.
This class is pretty hard but if you go to class, take good notes, and stay on top of all due dates you will be fine. Prof. Hess is very upfront about the way he runs his class from day 1, so if you choose to stay in the class after hearing his expectations then there isn't much you can say. He does not accept ANY late work and he is not helpful.
He is a bit tech-heavy but if you go into the class knowing this, you'll be fine. 4 tests all on Respondus, pretty easy, and some are an exact match to the homework or clicker questions. Attendance isn't mandatory but helpful. For my class, he did an online meeting option as well. Really tries to get to know his students and help them understand.
Really not that hard if you go to class and do the practice tests.
Uses iClicker every single class along with lectures that are not very helpful. Posts all recorded lectures online. Very unhelpful with anything tech-related even though all textbook/homework/exams are online. Nice, respectable professor from what I've seen. 5 exams and he drops one; don't have to take final if you don't want. Just ok.
Straight forward about his class and what you needed to pass. He has a different teaching style but as long as you take notes and study/review you will be ok. He uses iClicker or Learning Curve for extra credit and curves(bumps) exams. He drops your lowest exam and only counts 4/5. He assigns 1 HW a week and drops the lowest 2.
Makes it clear on the first day exactly how the class is going to be. You can skip final if done right. Pretty nice and funny guy not the best at answering questions tho. Hates emails and if your tech stops working he gives no sympathy. Some other ECON 224 teachers are much easier. Tests are easier than practice tests.
subpar teacher. Going to class is vital to passing the class. The biggest thing is to take notes (his lecture slides are very watered down compared to the achieve textbook; go off achieve) weekly homework and extra credit before each class. He also puts everything in the gradebook as a 0 until you finish the assignment so be aware of that.
if you have the option to switch to another professor, don't hesitate. Everyone I talked to in the class dislikes the man.
He teaches using iClicker questions, which I found to be an engaging way to learn the subject. You have to show up to class and pay attention in lectures to keep up. Tests can be difficult but he curves them by a lot, there's good study resources, and he drops your lowest exam grade. He's a nice guy, but he hates emails and isn't tech savvy.
I loved taking Dr. Hess's class. He gives 5 exams, and the top 4 count. Uses Iclicker and learning curves for extra credit. Most of the notes that Dr Hess gives are not that helpful but going to the lectures is very important because of the graphs that he draws and clicker questions. Gives very helpful practice exams. Also gives curves on exams.
honestly one of my best teachers this year. very organized and loves when students come to his office hours for help. very clear grading criteria and offers extra credit. as long as you do the work and put in minimal effort studying for tests you should do fine. also curved every test at least 15 points
I feel like there are two types of people who take Dr. Hess. Those who really like him or really hate him. He tells you day 1 how his class is and what to do to pass. If you participate in class, study, and visit his office hours, the class will be a breeze. Don't expect sympathy when it comes to technology and he hates emails but I liked his class
LOVED prof Hess. Lectures are engaging and if you go to class and pay attention, the homeworks and tests aren't that bad. He gives a 10 extra credit point assignments for7 points each, so up to 70 points extra credit. Go to his office hours!!He wants you to succeed. Please participate in class, it makes him happy lol. Wish the best for Prof Hess!
Dr. Hess is personable and a great teacher. Some may think the course is tough yet he gives significant curves, offers plenty of opportunities for extra credit, and drops plenty of 'lowest' assignments. I'd say if anyone studied like a normal student they'll be perfectly fine. Only negative thing I may say is his late policy is pretty demoralizing.
Dr. Hess is a wonderful professor! He works really hard to make sure all his students understand important material. He has many opportunities to increase your grade, and his exams are always followed up with a heavy curve. If you show up and study outside of class, you will do great in this class. He is also funny and makes class enjoyable!
Dr. Hess is one of the best professors for micro. He genuinely made this class enjoyable and is great at breaking down difficult topics. He curves almost every single exam and there are many opportunities to succeed in this class. As long as you are making the effort to attend lecture and paying attention to your homework, you will succeed!
Dr Hess is a good professor, he gave us lecture slides that we could print and take notes on during his lectures and we were able to use them during exams. You have to go to class as he does not post the lecture slides and he uses IClicker questions for grades so you have to be present. Pay attention to the class calendar.
I would kiss this professor for how good he was at teaching the course, 15pts extra credit for Exam,1,2,3, final, Lecture was engaging, humorous, love his sarcasm, Got the class to socialize with iclicker questions, super helpful in office hours, allows handwritten notes for exams, and curves exam 1,2,3,
Hess does a good job at teaching the subject matter, with slides, while also inserting humor into the lectures. He uses iClicker daily for the attendance grade. Also, you can earn up to 15 extra points on the exams with extra credit. Provides practice exams for you to take for practice. I would recommend him.
hard goes fast over material. doesnt answer emails.
This guy is an absolute fraud. He is a terrible teacher, and I do not know why he chose to teach college students. He was never helpful, and he gave horrible lectures. Please do yourself a favor and choose another professor to take this class with.
As long as you pay attention in this class, take notes, and ask questions, you'll be fine. Economics, in general, is a tough topic for first-time learners to understand. You have to study it multiple times outside of class to understand. Professor Hess is pretty accessible outside of class for office hours. He really wants his students to succeed.
Prof Hess' ECO224 class is well-structured, with engaging lectures and fair grading. Stay on top of the work, use resources like unstuckstudy for study prep, and you'll likely do just fine. Participation is key, but overall a manageable course.
Dr. Hess is an amazing professor. Even in his 8:30 lecture, he manages to keep me engaged the whole time. His lectures are interesting, and he incorporate iclicker which makes you actually learn the material. The exams are open note as long as they are hand-written, and each exam has a heavy curve. Homework and other assignments are easy.
DO. NOT. TAKE. He is NOT a good teacher. He rushes through the material to get done with it as fast as he can and doesn't care about his students actually learning a understanding the material. He is rude when answering questions, and is very difficult to talk to. He doesn't give access to look at the slides we go over in class, so you can't study.
The course material can be very tough but he allows all handwritten notes to be used on tests and the final. The tests are all multiple choice and directly taken from the textbook and course lectures. Each unit has a homework assignment that grades the questions as you go and allows for redos of the questions with a small point deduction.
Dr. Hess is a great professor. His lectures are fast, lectures are mandatory to get the iClicker questions right, handwritten notes are allowed on exams, and you have to purchase the online textbook for homework. If you just show up, write the notes down, and do the iClicker questions in class, you will do fine!
Josh is a good guy. He loves his students and is way too smart for his own good. He makes you buy his own self written text book which would normally be fine if it wasn't riddled with mistakes. The class is equation heavy which wouldnt be bad if he actually was good at math. He knows everything about econ and nothing about the math he teaches.
I hated this class. The professor was constantly harassing us to talk to one another during class when it was clear we all didn't want to. He makes you buy extra online resources to do the HW and access the book. His lectures were always confusing and he would rush through them. He never posted notes so you have to go to class. I do not recommend.
If you are taking Economics 224 with Professor Hess, be ready for a tough class. Go to class, answer all iClicker questions (you'll probably get extra credit) and take lots of notes. I recommend taking notes on a laptop in class since he goes fast and writing them after class since he allows handwritten notes for exams.
Definitely a difficult class so do not take if you have a lot going on in the semester. The professor is very nice and caring but the class is difficult so you will have to study a lot/teach yourself outside of class. It's a master's level course and he emphasizes on that a lot so that the difficulty of the course isn't taken lightly.
He's really not that bad. He assigned an insane amount of extra credit and every test was open note. You do have to study to do well though, you can't rely on the notes on the test. He's a funny guy, and curved every test. Attendance isn't "mandatory" but there are clicker questions every class that he sometimes grades.
He tends to go fast during lectures and even if you pay attention, not even half of it will make sense. Emphasis on studying outside the classroom through online materials. It is extremely difficult
uses iclikcer to take attendance and asks graded questions throughout the class, but he asks them before he teaches the concept in class so 100% learn the material via the textbook before. Overall he like talks in riddles so if ur not a math person find someone else. only positive is that he is kinda funny and lets you use notes on the exams.
great teacher and awesome class I feel like I learned a lot! I would reccomend taking this class if you are looking for an easy econ class with a cool teacher.
Let's just say Joshua was not the best professor. Very lecture-heavy, bad at explaining current topics, and his iClicker questions are bull. He said he gave 60 extra credit points.. I have been to every class and have heard of one extra credit opportunity for 5 points. Highly recommend to look else where. Practice exams look NOTHING like the test!!
He is a chill guy and a funny person but the tests are so hard. The practice tests haven't really helped me personally, I find myself guessing on most of the exams. He explains things pretty well but it's really all about just knowing it and not understanding it.
Professor Hess is a great person and is funny. However, it does not make up for how difficult his class is. He goes through lectures quickly and doesn't explain the topics fully. There is an online textbook -USE IT. The notes from that are much more helpful.
READ THIS FOR ACCURATE RATING: Pros: Can be funny and witty Nice to talk to in person Passionate for Econ Cons: He does not care if you miss class Absolutely will not post lecture notes Tests are nothing like the homework and ALL MULTIPLE CHOICE Tests SUCK Lectures are boring Make sure you participate and get notes down; tests are OPEN NOTE
It was very much lecture styled and he went by the slides way too fast, it was extremely hard to gather notes. A lot of the material I learned wasn't during class because I couldn't understand the way he taught it. He just was not thorough.
Has a good teaching style, but don't fall behind in the class. Pay attention the entire lecture or you'll have to read the textbook and watch YouTube to understand the content. He uses iClicker so attendance isn't really mandatory, BUT he'll tell the class to click the wrong answer sometime to see who's really in class - affects the iClicker grade.
Dr. Hess is very funny and is a good person to talk to, especially when you have questions. His class is pretty lecture heavy, but the lectures were actually kind of fun! He kept learning interactive by including clicker questions and encourages students to talk about it. Be sure to take hand-written notes!
Horrible class. He advertises 60 points of extra credit, when we only saw five. iClicker questions shouldn't count as extra credit when they're just used to fill in blanks for notes. The class is extremely lecture-heavy, but he rushes through the material + doesn't post the notes. Exams are open-note, but tests are way harder than what he teaches.
He goes through the notes with you, very iclicker heavy but not too bad. The practice exams are very helpful and key to success, very similar to the exams. He lets you use notes on all exams and finals but I would say still study. He gives 5 points of extra credit for each exam and then curves the final grade around 5-10 points depending.
I honestly don't know why his rating is so low. I would not be turned away from taking this class based off his rating. If you just AI all the textbook chapters and takes notes you will understand the material. Also do 3-5 practice tests because they're way harder and will carry you on the actual test. I didn't even takes notes in class.
He is pretty geeky about certain things and is overall a nice guy. I did not really like the subject he taught. He goes by the syllabus.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. Ruined my semester and made everyone feel horrible and like they werent capable of suceeding in his entry level Econ class. Tests were extremely hard. If I could give you any word of advice, DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is extremely self centered and believes he has extremely odd power over every student.
Boring asf lectures and hard ass tests
Graded iClicker, however, plenty of assignments and the class is easy enough to get a good grade with minimal attendance. Professor himself is extremely hard to get in touch with. In all my interactions he has been arrogant, dismissive, and rarely helpful. Has ridiculous criteria for making up work even if it was missed due to an excused absence.
Total tool, I question if he actually knows econ. Graded iClicker, however, class is basic enough to receive a good grade with minimal attendance. Hess is arrogant, dismissive, and rarely helpful. His lectures are all over the place and not informative. Best bet is to learn the material on your own time and attend class for iClicker. Avoid hess.
Worst class of all time. I had no idea what was happening and I rly don't think he understands what econ is. I was literally in the middle of an exam and got up and dropped the course… DO NOT TAKE IF YOU WANT A HAPPY LIFE
