We read three books throughout the semester and didn't need a textbook. He is awesome because he doesnt believe in FINALS. you have to read because there are weekly quizzes. The tests are based off the quizzes and everything in his lectures, but is super easy if you go to class.
This class was amazing! Paddison doesn't believe in finals and every exam was super easy. Instead of using a textbook we read three different books and they were all very interesting. 10/10 recommend
Mr. Paddison was a great professor! He doesn't require a textbook but instead picks a few interesting novels to read throughout the semester. The books were entertaining and his lectures were interactive and easy to follow. He has quizzes over readings and you get cheat sheets on the tests. He's a very understanding and kind guy.
He doesn't believe in traditional tests, he gives us take home midterms and finals. We did not have to use a textbook, but instead, we had weekly quizzes over the lecture. Also, we had weekly history labs where he would give us several primary sources, and we would have to answer two questions based from those sources.
Great professor! No textbook just three cheap books read throughout the semester. Quiz over the readings every class. Allows cheat sheet on exam. Lecture was interesting and learned a lot. Highly recommend for an easy A!
Dr. Paddison is an amazing professor. He's extremely intelligent and presents the course material in a way that is easy to understand. His course is unconventional in that he uses three historical books (instead of a textbook) and allows his students to use a cheat sheat on exams. He does give out daily quizzes, so be sure to read!
Professor Paddison is a great professor. No textbook he gets you engaged with books and ties it up with the course material. Super friendly and funny. the course is easy to navigate and you learn as well! He does give daily quizzes, super easy if you read the books. Overall I enjoyed the class
Dr. Paddison is forsake my favorite history professor I've had so far. He was able to make World Civ fun and interesting. Instead of one big text book, you buy 3 smaller books that are basically stories. His tests are clear on how he's grading so as long as you show up and take notes and read you're sure to pass.
gives super easy quizzes once a week over a couple chapters in whatever book your reading . His lectures are super interesting and he's pretty funny. def taking him again. this class is so easy, do yourself a favor and take the easy A.
Dr. Paddison is a great professor. Although he requires a lot of reading (and a lot of quizzes on that reading) and his attendance policy is pretty harsh, he's super interested in his subjects and his students. He'll usually try to help you out if you have a problem! Plus, he's hilarious in a dad-joke way.
Professor Paddison is my favorite professor at Texas State so far! The way he lectures makes history actually interesting and engaging. There are only two exams but he gives you every resource to pass. A quiz once every week over assigned reading, but again is easy. He is funny, passionate, and helps you as much as he can. I highly recommend him!
Besides Morris Nelms, this man is the best professor @txst. Very interesting, weekly quizzes, gives quiz questions before giving the quizzes, offers extra cred, two tests, clear grading, no essays, short answers on exams, notecard cheat sheet front&back
A lot of reading, but he picks decent books that he makes you read. There is either a quiz or activity that you do each class, but he drops the worst two grades of the activity/quiz. The tests are based on your writing. You have to be very detailed on the test. He allows a card for the test for a cheat sheet.
Forces in class participation. I am paying you to stand up there, if I don't want to participate then I don't have to. Assigns a 12-15 page research paper which is ridiculous. He assumes that everyone knows just as much about the subject as he does. He does not lecture enough and makes us teach ourselves and our classmates the material.
Do yourself a favor and take Dr. Paddinson! He is a blessing from the history Gods. He's super funny, passionate about history, and loves the Hamilton musical. What more can you want from a History professor? His TA was a tough grader but that isn't his fault. Overall, I'd take a class with him again and I'm not even a history major. TAKE HIM!
History 1310 became my favorite class this semester because of him. He is so amazing and passionate about the topics we discussed. History can be very boring sometimes but he added humour and found ways to get the students attention. You do have to read and you do activities/quizzes but they arent bad. Tests have essays but you get a notecard!
Paddison is so nice and helpful and you can see it in the way he talks that he is truly passionate about what he teaches. He also is fully aware that students are not interested in history so he makes the content enjoyable by reading short novels instead of textbooks and relating whats happening to wats happing today! Daily easyquizzes/activities.
Dr. Paddison was great! His lectures were never boring, and I am totally uninterested in history. Only a midterm and a final, but he allows a notecard on both. He tells you all of the possible essay topics for the exams! There is a short reading for every class, but it's usually pretty interesting. Would recommend him if you want an A!
I wish EVERY history professor was like Paddison. Gosh I sure hope I can get him for HIS1310. He doesn't make this subject feel dry, even though it's lecture heavy. He relates it sometimes to things we can relate to. TopHat is a thing for this class and all the points will be used to boost your grade, so go to class! Also extra credit as well :)
I was never interested in History until I took him! His lectures are SO interesting! Only a midterm and final; you will have to write essays for them, but you get a notecard. Quiz or activity each class, but they're interesting. IA is kind of a tough grader, but it depends on who you get. Overall, very fun class if you don't enjoy history.
I was really nervous about taking history at TXST but Dr. Paddison proved to me wrong. He made me actually enjoy history. There's only 2 test the entire semester but he uses Top Hat for in class activities. There's a quiz every week over the assigned readings but they're not too bad. There's no textbook but he provides PDF's.
only 2 exams, incl the final!; tophat for reading quizzes and lecture participation; extra credit for attending SI & for extra assignments; tells you exactly what you need to do on essay exams to succeed; you get a notecard for exam; easy if you do what he says; amazing professor, very funny, interesting, engaging lectures
Mr. Paddison made history ACTUALLY interesting. He was very caring and was a great teacher overall.
A great professor that makes lectures easy to understand, funny, and wants top hear what you have to say. We actually got through to present time which usually doesn't happen in HIST classes. You must do the readings because the in class reading questions/quizzes which are easy and help your grades, which means you must show up to class too!
I took him for 1310 & 1320 and he is one of the best professors I've had! His tests are matching and essay format. He uses Tophat for quizzes and in class assignments. You have to do the readings before each class but they're not bad. There's usually an activity each day. Go to class and take notes (because he doesn't post them) and you'll be fine
Paddison makes his lectures very entertaining. The class focuses on minorities, women, and everyday people which was interesting. There are reading assignments which can be very long, but the quizzes are pretty easy. Paddison is very clear about the test format. The exam grading is pretty relaxed, but it is done by a TA and seemed to a bit random
This class was my first class with Dr. Paddison and he was hilarious, interesting, always available, gave great feedback. He does give questions during the class so if you don't attend, you'll miss those points. He didn't use a textbook, instead he posted readings on the TRACS site. I would definitely take this class again.
This man is a blessing sent from the History Gods. I literally hate history and he turned it into one of my favorite classes. No homework. Tophat questions in class for participation points which counts as 30% of your final grade. 3 exams. Literally sad I will never get to take him again. Do yourself a favor and take his class.
Paddison is a solid professor. He is funny and his lectures are interesting. Lots of participation required through TopHat questions and 3 multiple choice/essay based exams. A minor complaint is that there is a lot of liberal propaganda in class which is to be expected at Texas State and I wish the class was less preachy and politically charged.
2nd time taking Paddison. Grading is essentially up to the IA so it really depends who you get. Very clear expectations. Uses TopHat every single class. Makes it interesting. Clearly loves what he does. Exams are 20 matching + an essay about a primary source. Very organized. Take him for history!!!
Dr. Paddison is very passionate about history, but can be very repetitive in lectures. He assigns 1-2 readings every week and has quizzes over them on TopHat. Readings can be very lengthy and very uninteresting. History at txst is a difficult class and essay based, but his "labs" prepare you well for exams. Wouldn't recommend him as a first choice.
Paddison is great! 2 weekly readings that aren't super long but need to do if you want a good grade. Grade book is weekly labs (+pass/pass/fail) tophat reading quizzes, and 3 essay exams. My TA was the worst part of the class because he didn't give clear feedback on how to improve exam grades. His lectures fly by and he made history interesting.
Great professor. only 3 tests, notecard allowed. He uses a website called tophat where you answer easy questions and its 25% of your grade. Easy class, just skim the readings and you should be perfectly fine - they're max 15 pages with large font. no textbook at all, which is amazing. only problem is if you get a harsh ta, but take him for sure!
Professor Paddison is a nice guy but you definitely have to work for your grade and take solid notes for his tests. Although he gives a notecard but you never know what the topic is about so its like hit or miss. The TA was honestly rude this semester and thinks she knows it all. Like this is just a basic class its not that serious.
Attendance not required but you should go. Tough grader on test so read and study! Not a lot of homework and there's 5 question quizzes at the start of each class. Lectures are interesting and wont get too bored. Take good notes, read before class, and study for the test and go to the SI Office Hours before test days in the morning and you'll be ok
Class was originally FTF but formatted the class to be online for those who did not feel comfortable going on campus or were sick. All lectures were recorded and assignments were fully online. Used zoom for those who did not come to class while teaching FTF. Two essay exams which were the midterm and the final. Super easy to follow along, recommend
all these history class will be difficult for people who struggle with writing, but he sets you up for success. his lectures are in the style he wants you to write your essays in. he makes it clear that hes making arguments on history (so yeah he has an agenda) but you can do more research on your own. just dont include that in your essays ;)
Dr. Paddison is a great professor. Take notes over the lectures!! We had 3 essays for the entire class and quizzes every week over the lectures and reading. He gave two extra credit chances at the end of the semester, so if he does that for you, do them!! He made the class fun and not super hard. Definitely recommend taking his class.
The class is very easy his lectures are podcast based so I found them very interesting and could listen to them as I did errands or cleaned. Quizzes were very easy and exams were essay based nothing too bad though. The IA can be a tough grader but if you're a good writer you'll be fine.
He captures my attention in every lecture and teaches you in a simple and effective manner. i genuinely enjoyed his class overall would recommend
His lectures were short, he had a lot of information but got straight to the point. Not much to the class except listening to lectures, taking notes, weekly reading quizzes and 3 exams. Take him if you can !
His lectures are all you have to read/listen to! So if you want an easy history class this is it! His rubric for the essays is so nice so even if it's a horrible paper if you still hit the points he wanted in there the least you can get is a 60/70. Also, his lectures are not boring he makes them interesting and uses SoundCloud to record. Loved him!
I usually HATE history but this was one of my favorite classes! Dr. Paddison uses podcast style lectures (25-35 min) and is very good at keeping it interesting. Be sure to take good notes as the tests are essays based on the lectures. He's very nice and helpful with any questions!
Paddison is elite. He walks you through every aspect of writing longer term papers. He also provides excellent feedback and bite sized chunks of reading for you to do weekly. I would highly recommend his course! Also, there definitely is not any kind of "liberal bias" unless you think that straight-forward facts about US history are biased.
Dr. Paddison is a great professor! His lectures are podcast-based, which was alright, but I wish they were through Zoom, so we could actually interact and see his face. Otherwise, he cares about his students. I would take him again!
If you have to take a history class, TAKE DR. PADDISON!!! I am not a history person, but he makes going to class super fun and interesting. He is really easy to follow/understand. Weekly online quizzes which are super easy if you go to class and take notes. most assignments are in groups of 2-3. Exams are easy. 100% would take again!!!!!!!!!!
the class is super interesting and the lectures are actually enjoyable. labs on Friday but can be done in groups. light work outside of class, just readings for quizzes or labs. overall super fun class and amazing professor.
Took the course online over the summer. There are daily podcast lectures, readings, and quizzes (lowest 5 quiz grades dropped). Lectures are short and very fun to listen to - he puts a lot of effort into them. A few papers, but they're only 2-3 pages long and his grading criteria are very clear. Overall a very enjoyable and fairly easy class.
dr. paddison is a great professor with very interesting lectures. there are history papers done in class almost every friday, and the exams are structured the same way and are not too difficult. i don't think attendance is mandatory, but you wouldn't pass the class if you don't show up.
Overall he's a pretty solid professor and the class isn't too hard. Just show up to class, take notes, study and you should be good! Would definitely take him again if I had the chance!
Dr. Paddison is engaging, funny, and really cares about the success of his students. Highly recommend taking Dr. Paddison. The only reason he doesn't get 5 stars is because of the history labs, but they weren't bad just annoying. He gives great feedback and allows late work. TAKE HIM
Dr. Paddison was an amazing professor. He made the lectures interesting and nice to attend, especially for a history course. You do have to write a mini-essay of sorts based on a short reading every Friday, with a second longer reading somewhere else within the week, but other than being reading intensive, I would definitely take him again.
Didn't allow for Covid accommodations with online learning
I LOVED THIS CLASS SO MUCH. attendance wasn't really taken but you do top hat questions every class that are a good section of your grade but you can do them from your phone even if you are not in class. this class is lecture heavy but it was so fun and entertaining. take him please
Professor Paddison is a great teacher. You must come to class to pass, you need to take notes during the lectures. There are history labs every Friday that are in essay form, you can work with partners. 5 question reading quizzes once per week. Exams are the same format as the labs. if you take good notes you will pass the class with an A.
Best Professor I had at Texas State. Tries his best to make everyone understand the material. Test are easy, you really only need to put minimal effort. You dont have to study at all.
He is an amazing professor and makes lectures interesting. The labs each Friday are super easy as long as you've been in class and taken notes. The reading quizzes can be really difficult as well as the tests (depending on your IA that grades them). As long as you show up and pay attention you'll do good.
Loved this prof. His TA grades a little hard and you have to buy a ~$30 subscription but other than that his class was fun and fairly easy. His lecture style is easy to follow and he is very personable. I wish I could take him for all my history classes
Absolutely LOVED this Professor. Usually I hate history, but his lectures were very intriguing and proved good points. Never needed to study for this class. You need to show up to take good notes because you need them on labs & tests. Only downside to this class was that the TA graded the tests hard (only 3 tests).
One of the best history teachers out there for sure. Professor Paddison will not make his lecture boring at all. The labs are exactly how the tests are. He will give you the real history and not the history that we all know about. He cracks some jokes to make the class more engage which was my favorite part of his class. Overall awesome teacher!
My class was MWF and 45 minutes so the essay-tests were kind of hard for me given the time constraint. The TA I had was also a tough grader. Professor Paddison really is passionate about this course though so lectures were really fun, just make sure you actually go, the in lecture quizzes are a decent portion of the grade.
Overall Dr. Paddison was a good professor. He doesnt give regular multiple choice tests, but instead written tests. History labs every Friday which are annoying but you get used to it after a while. I WILL SAY, our IA this semester for 1310 was a very tough grader. The class averages for HISTORY writing test would be in the 70s so beware.
Dr. Paddison made history fun! His recorded lectures were easy to listen to, almost like listening to a podcast. He really cares about his students and is passionate about teaching. I highly recommend!
He makes history fun and easy to learn and remember.
No textbook but you have to buy $30 TopHat subscription. Attendance was not mandatory but did TopHat questions every start of class that you can only see if youre in class and they are graded. 1 assignment a week on friday where we analyze the weekly reading. 3 essay exams given 1 week in advance at 20% each. Tophat and assignments grade 20% each.
I have 8am history class which would normally be pretty horrible and it's still hard but, Dr. P makes it so much better. He's such a good lecturer and makes the material interesting. There's no final, there's 3 essay's which are the exams and what he calls "History Labs" which you do in class and they're pretty easy. He's a great professor 10/10
Dr. Paddisons lectures are great! I always enjoy listening to him, I will say that the exams can be tough but the TAs are really understanding and can help you.
I have never been interested in history until I took this class, professor Paddison is great at keeping the energy up and engaging. Lectures are very important for your exams, which are essays. TA is kind is a tough grader, so office hours before submitting essays are a must. Tophat subscription is about 30$, you need it for attendance.
Professor Paddison teaches his class in a very engaging and fun way. I was scared to take a history class because I have always been super bad in history, but I was able to get an A in this course. There are short weekly readings, some online questions, and 3 essays. His lectures are interesting, fun, and easy to understand. Take him!
Paddison is a great professor! He makes his lectures enjoyable. Be sure to attend class for participation points. Go to TAs for help on essay exams.
Dr. Paddison's class was super enjoyable. I am personally not a history person but he teaches it in a different perspective that made me find it interesting. His class was also easy in the sense that we only had 3 Unit Exams that were essays over the unit and no final exam. Highly recommend him and I enjoyed the class a lot.
Paddison made history really enjoyable. He is very enthusiastic about the topic you go over and will give a lot of examples that will be helpful when writing your exam essays. Make sure to take good notes and read the assigned lab reading each week for a free 100. You will have 3 essay and they are fairly simple that go over a topic from the unit.
I always hated history since high school, but Prof Paddison makes it so fun. I actually look forward to going to his class. He's funny & upbeat & super cool. Attendance isn't "mandatory" but you will have a hard time on exam essays if you don't go & do the readings, as well as answering the top hat questions that count towards your final grade.
absolutely the best professor I have ever had hands off. he makes history so interesting and he is such a funny guy. The only reason I got a D is because I forgot to turn in a paper, but that was on me not him. I would most definitely sign up for one of his classes again. 5 stars all around!
beware of top hat! - missed one class and my grade dropped 3 points. has no free days for attendance so if you're sick you will miss like 7 top hat questions, other than that amazing professor and class. Its interesting and he is a super great guy.
Loved this class!!! He really makes lectures interesting and provides you with the content needed to succeed in the class. The tests were in essay form and done outside of class, which I loved, and it felt like he wanted you to succeed in the class/was available to answers questions and help. Plus, he's got some jokes.
Dr. Paddison is an amazing lecturer. You have to be on time to his class since his tophat start the minute class does. He grades labs as 0, 75, or 100. If you take good notes, you will do well on the tests. He is very helpful if you ask for feedback on his exams.
Dr. Paddison is a good professor. Very by-the-book but not bad. I had to drop the class for medical reasons and he was very understanding.
Attendance wasn't technically mandatory but you miss daily points through TopHat so it is in one's best interest to show up everyday. His lectures are very engaging but students need to ensure they are taking good notes throughout because the powerpoints he uses are not all inclusive and you dont get much from copying them. Great professor overall!
He was a good professor, however, I felt he wasn't very understanding at all. I had to go from the dance building to the history building within 10 minutes (I'm a dance major). Instead of being understanding of the time crunch, he told me I needed to get a schedule change instead or lose points, which is incredibly difficult as a dance major.
Dr. Paddison is awesome! His lectures are well-paced, informative, and engaging. He slips some jokes in here and there. You absolutely need to attend lecture and take DETAILED notes. The essays can be difficult if you do not take good notes. Overall a great/enjoyable class but you have to put in the work for a high grade.
This professor has questions about readings at the start of class, so be sure to actually read as it's a large portion of your grade and can save you if you don't do well on essays. Highly recommend taking this class if you like history. If not, then get ready for harsh grading from the assistants.
Pretty much all lectures, but one of the better professors that I have had. He is a funny guy so you easily stay inserted in the lectures. He has a tophat question every day so everyday you go in you have opportunity to higher your grade. Exams are all open ended, so you do have to take good notes but hes one of the best!!
he was the best history professor, i actually didn't mind going to class.
Mr. Paddison has by far been my favorite professor on campus. Although I had him for an 8 AM class, he made every minute worthwhile and engaging. Lectures were very simple yet detailed, so take good notes. Labs and exams aren't difficult if you pay attention. Although attendance wasn't mandatory, being there to get the TopHat credit is recommended.
I don't like history but this professor made me love it. You did have to attend all classes as there were lots of labs and top hats but I truly learned and retained information. If you read the sources he asks you to read and take good notes of the lectures, you will get a great grade and have a great time. Overall, loved it!!!
I hate history but the way he taught made me understand it more. Most of the lecture you have to take notes off what he says slides are pictures. Not traditional tests. They are like an essay but pretty easy. He will have reading for before class sometimes and will ask questions off the reading. Pretty easy class overall.
Amazing professor, really engages you in class. Tests are essay style timed writings but you are allowed to prepare from notes. You have to take note on the words he says he doesn't have slides with words on them, i just typed everything he said and cleaned it up later. Uses top hat, .5 points for answering wrong and full point for correct.
Dr. Paddison was super cool. He made history interesting and is very passionate about what he teaches. The tests are graded pretty harshly and are written tests. However, if you attend lecture, it helps on the test.
kgood
Mr. Paddison is an extremely good teacher, but I had him for an 8 am so I had fallen behind, and the only reason I passed his class was because he helped outline what I needed to study, and how I could succeed. Extremely helpful and is more than willing to work with you on any problems you might have. Genuinely a good man. And a passionate speaker.
I loved going to his class and the way he gave his lectures. The quizzes and homework aren't bad, but the tests are graded pretty hard. Go to class though even if you have the 8am like I did.
cannot recommend him enough im not a history buff but every day i looked forward to his lectures, they are so interesting and make the class SO FUN! very funny and VERY good at teaching, lets you use notes for every exam/lab. make sure you take good notes but its not hard to because he makes every lecture so interesting and fun, AMAZING person.
Dr. Paddison was an amazing professor and made history the only reason I got the grade I got was solely because I didn't do the textbook readings. Attendance isn't necessarily mandatory but he makes you do a tophat at the beginning and end of every class. He taught topics that aren't really talked about which is what made it interesting.
I had Dr. Paddison for hist 1310 and his lectures are just like podcasts! I highly recommend taking his classes
Dr. Paddison is a great professor! The class was really interesting to me and I learned a lot from it. I took this class summer 2024 so there was a lecture, reading, and 5 question quiz each day of the week (aside from saturday and sunday). There were 3 essays that were not too difficult. I really enjoyed his class and highly recommend taking him!
I took this class as an online class, thinking it would be easy. I thought completely wrong. This professor sets you up for failure, quizzes every day of class, and four exams that are HEAVILY a part of your overall grade. They are four pages long, primary sources, secondary sources, lecture sources, anything, you name it!!
For someone who struggles with History, I got an A and I highly recommend this online course. Joshua Paddison was able to keep me engaged with lectures (often no longer than 30 min) and gave great PowerPoints and supplemental readings. As long as you take notes during the lecture and read what he gives, you will do well. Extra credit opportunities!
ONLINE COURSE: good professor, major grades are 3 4-page essays, you have a week to write. SUPER EASY GRADER ON THESE PAPERS, i got a 99 on all of them. However, if you're taking his course as a back-burner class, you're underestimating the workload. Easy to fall behind. Accessibility warning: his lectures don't have transcripts or subtitles.
Quizes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, lectures can be a little hard to pick up, 3 writing exams, each weighted 25%. Set the wrong way when rude comments left on exam 2, saying I didn't take the time to read my paper, accusing me of not reading the sources. Disheartening to me as a student with a reading and writing disability, who can miss things.
Average Prof. Class done through podcasts is quite nice, allows multitasking. Quizzes 2x/wk. Lectures don't have direct answers in quiz causing you to not know what the answer is even after re-listening to lecture. Exams 3x/sem essay. Essay prompts are okay w/ room for ExCred. Office hours are engaging. Key note: Quiz answers aren't clear.
DO NOT BELIEVE ANY OF THE REVIEWS AT ALL!!! I TOOK HIS CLASS A COUPLE OF SEMESTERS AGO, AND THE AVERAGE TEST SCORES WERE ALWAYS IN THE FAILING ALWAYS. AT ONE POINT DURING THE SEMESTER, A STUDENT WENT TO THE FRONT AND YELLED THAT HE GRADES WAY TOO HARD. CHOOSE ANYONE ELSE PLEASE
Don't take him
So, Doctor Paddison, for some reason this semester has decided to start grading students very harshly on exams. He picks at essays and points out every little flaw in them. He took off 20 points from my exam because he didn't like a source I used that he provided me. The last exam average was a 63 he refused to curve. He's a cool guy, so it's sad.
He grades really harshly on the three exams, which account for 75% of your grade. He will criticize and critique any little thing he deems AI . He also barely gives out any extra credit. For exams you can only use the sources he provides but if you interpret them differently than he does he will take off points for that.
I really struggle with history but the way he has his lectures and readings really made history enjoyable and I actually retained what I learned. Would hands down take another course of his if he decided to do more courses.
