If you want a good grade, you definitely need to work and earn it in this class. He possesses both extremes, extremely helpful, but extremely strict. Whiners, procrastinators, and "easy class" seekers shouldn't dare take his class. But if you want prep for transfer, I highly recommend. I fear no essays, or readings anymore.
If you enjoy reading books then you will definitely enjoy this class! He requires you to read 10 books and articles for the semseter. Your last essay is 12 pages + It's ridiculous! Also you have to give a group presentation related to the book he assigns for the week!He doesn't take into consideration that you are taking other courses.
Professor Rodriguez's class is a challenge. Make sure to read EVERYTHING he tells you to. So many books assigned during the semester but, it is a great way to get your academic act together because this class is NOT an easy A. The work you put in will determine your grade. Get help when he is available.
Extremely demanding and strict. Felt like my boss at work. Got a D in the class, but I learned so much about time management and being a better student. You will really learn more skills than just writing and reading from his class. No extra credit, you have enough to do.
I don't know what class the person below was in, but there were only seven books (very cheap for ALL if you buy online), but all great books. Difficult issues to talk about, but Mr. Rodriguez was very helpful both in and out of class to give me clarification. Do ALL the work and follow directions. Lazy peeps beware.
I was scared to take Rodriguez a second time, since I had him for English 28 a year before, but I am glad I did. He is very patient with students who seek his help, but you need to be prepared before you go see him. Very hard grader, but I am no longer scared of research, writing, and reading.
Rodriguez is not for the sensitive and easily offended. The subject matter makes students breakdown their ways of thinking in order to understand topics and controversies. I was very uncomfortable the first few weeks of class, because he ALWAYS warns us as to what was coming. In the end, I earned the A. Again, BEWARE sensitive people.
Great professor! Strict and no nonsense, but his was a class I looked forward to attending, even at the early hour of 7:25am!!!!!
Not an easy A!!!! You have been warn. Lot of reading and writing. He know who you are too. Don't be absent or late, it will damage grade.
I don't want to read for a few years!!!! I have NEVER read so much in my life!!!!
Took him in the winter session. Very strict, but it made me a responsible student. His class was not boring like other teachers I have take before. He made three hours of class interesting and entertaining. If a slow reader, DO NOT take. He gives A LOT to read, but you write about it.
If you love English then this professor is for you! He is very strict and books are necessary in order to be in his class. He is very serious about attendance, so be punctual! You have to read and prepare for the writing assignments. DO NOT BE LAZY!
This composition and critical thinking course delivers! If you don't like to write, much less read, why are you in college. Rodriguez will make you WORK for the grade. Slackers beware! I'm an athlete and I think he is a great professor! Also, HE READS your work.
Read! Write! Read! Write! I wish I took Mr. Rodriguez earlier in my college career! His rigor and structure has made me a better writer in my other courses. I am taking history and sociology, and they both require lengthy term papers. My teachers for those classes gave NO direction, so I use what I learned in English!
Even though I failing his class, Mr. Rodriguez has taught me A LOT about being a responsible student. Will apply his advice next semester.
Strict, but sweet! Excellent professor, but you NEED to WORK to earn your grade! Can't wait for 101 with him!
Tons of reading.....books and books......discussing it next lecture......he does prepare you if you are a english major.....but i am sone science major.....way too much hard...
Interesting reads but does not work well with full course load. No forgiveness, no excuses. Good for students who don't work or have families.
Great instructor. The weekly breakdown that Rodriguez provides with the syllabus helps working students set up a plan of action. You must communicate with him when you have difficulties and he will work with you. Learned better time management thanks to him.
I hate literature, but the course is required for the university I wish to transfer to. All I can say about Rodriguez's class, is that it is a TON of reading, but the writing assignments deal with those readings. Oh, he makes GREAT choices for students to read! No longer hate lit as much.
many take his class then suddenly drop dont get discourage if you hate reading he picks good books but gets you off guard with class discussions not a hard grader and gives good feedback on papers and overcome your fears if you hate presentation its only one that is mandatory.
Even though I earned a C in the course, I learned a lot and should have listened to professor's advice. Could of had an A but got lazy. Professor told me I could still earn A, but I didn't listen to feedback. Listen to this professor he good and helpful.
I play sports and Mr. Rodriguez helped me every step of the way. His warning scared some teammates, but he helps those who want help. Strict, but tells us to treat class like our practices.
Currently in his summer 103 class and I am very happy that he cleans house. Rodriguez holds high standards and keeps everyone on an equal playing field. No favorites, no excuses. The class is very intimate that now my classmates are able to discuss more and Rodriguez can give us the best feedback possible. A true college course. Thank you Mr. R.
He is a great teacher. He gives a lot of work and a lot of reading though. He picks good books to read. If you need help on essays, he'll gladly help you. He gives updates on grades frequently and will respond to any questions you may have either in class or via e-mail quickly.
Good teacher. A lot of reading and writing. You must do your part to maintain a good grade. Teaches at university level
Beware. If you lazy, DROP! This teacher catches cheaters and plagiarism without Turnitin.com. He reads everything and investigates student writing. Yes, I failed. After being lectured for fortyfive minutes, I can tell Rodriguez DOES care. A lot of work, but for student success.
Rodriguez is GREAT for 103. Finally a professor who isn't going AROUND the topics. There they are, read, discuss and educate yourself! He is someone who is FINALLY making students TALK! Also, he is a professor that is there for the students, not the paycheck. If you help yourself, he'll help you! But you must do the work.
Honest, fair, straight-forward, no-nonsense. Mr. Rodriguez gave bi-weekly grade updates so our class knew where we stood in the class.
I have been at ELAC for three semesters and this was the first class that made me feel like I was in college. Great professor!
The hard work during the summer TOTALLY paid off. Took English 101 two years ago, but Mr. Rodriguez took time on Fridays during his office hours to help bring me up to speed. He's strict, but always willing to help. Just don't waste his time (meaning don't go to him unprepared).
Think someone said this before, but Mr. Rodrigues is VERY strict AND VERY helpful. If you do not read you will be bored and not pass the simple, but costly quizzes. You MUST participate in discussion. If you are a quiet person, don't take him for 103. Presentations and being a discussion leader are requirements.
Psychos and Sociopaths in Literature! Best books I have EVER READ! Mr. Rodriguez does not always teach 211, but when he does take him. A lot to read but it is a literature class. Two major essays and MANY reading quizzes at the start of class. NEVER BE LATE! He is very helpful and caring.
Never realized how many films were originally novels. Long reading list, but page turners. Great instructor!
Mr. Rodriguez is a hard teacher if you don't do your work. You'll like his class a lot if you plan on actually doing work in it. He is very helpful if you ask for help. He actually cares about his students
I took rodriguez twice one for 103 and 211 he is awesome. Beware if you hate reading and writing essays but dont worry he picks page turners that wont make skip the book and his quizzes and test are all based on what you read and group presentations are a must so there is no room for shyness.
By far the best instructor I have ever had. If you are up for a challenge, he is for you. I look at life with so much more detail thanks to him. If you slack off, this is the wrong class. If you are super busy, it might be too much work due to the essays and reading that are required. AMAZING!
Let's just say he's extremely strict to the point of ridiculousness. Maybe it was just the semester, but he was extremely hesitant to help me when i went to office hours, he's serious about making it to class on time, he wouldn't accept my first essay because i was 3 minutes late walking in. Be prepared to work hard and write long papers.
LOTS OF READING! If you planned take him for 5 week session, DON'T. I took him for winter 2015 and was also full time at csula, i didn't have a life for 5 weeks. 4 essay: one 4-5 page, two 6-7 page, and one 8-10 research. four 3-4 page close reading. one poster group project. Be meticulous. He is picky about details. Tough but worth it.
Rodriguez is a great teacher. I was never really into writing until I took his class. His feedback is great and he's always there if you need it. He knows what he's talking about and picks really amazing novels for you to read. I've taken him three times in one year already.
He is very strict and to the point. If you have a busy life and other tough classes, this will be very challenging. There is a lot of reading, quizzes and papers due every 2 weeks or so. He is trying to push you to be university material. It is unfair he drops after 3 abs but he will miss about 5 times. He changed the midterm date on us last min.
A lot of reading and a lot of writing! The work isn't hard but it is definitely time consuming so don't take him during summer or winter. Make sure to do assigned reading because there is a quiz in every meeting. Don't show up late and participate in discussions. Only buy reading books, not textbook.
This Professor is the best. He is a tough grader and maybe the most caring as well. He will help you in anyway. he does assign lots of reading and a lot of homework.
Prof. Rodriguez is extremely passionate about what he teaches and how he does so. It is great that I never read any of the books he assigned before. Reading is important. Very strict, but goes above and beyond when you seek him out for one-on-one help. University quality professor. He is the type you will definitely learn from. That is the point.
Rodriguez was my second attempt at completing English 103. I took another professor and was bored out of my mind. As an AJ major someone told me he uses legal cases and true crime in his English 103 courses so I was interested. I heard he was difficult, but I took him for summer. Best decision I made. Class shrank, he is tough, but very helpful.
Loved his class. Great discussion topics. Wide range of novels were used for the class. There was a lot of reading but they were short novels so it was not so bad. Keep in mind i do not like to read. Exams and grading is spelled out but not set in stone so it could change according to the pace of the class. Overall awesome class & professor.
One of the most hardest professor I have ever had. He is meticulous when he grades essays, spelling errors are a big no no for him. We read about 6 novels, if you are busy you will be stressed out the whole semester. He is passionate and sincere. He likes doing themes for his english class. Our theme was about transgender, just have an open mind.
I made a huge mistake picking him as my English 101 professor. He puts you on blast in front of the class if you ask a question. He made me not want to participate in class anymore, discouraged me on the next level.
A lot of readings and essays. Beware of pop quizzes. He doesn't reply to emails, so it's hard to get help from him. Out of the entire course he only returned one essay, I don't even know how I scored on all my other work, despite several attempts asking him. I don't recommend full time students/workers because this class is quite intense.
After being away from composition courses for a year, I was really scared to take this literature and comp course. Yes, Prof. Rodriguez is very strict and no-nonsense, but that is needed and it worked for me. The texts he chooses, surprisingly, deal with current issues, which shows he is careful in his selections. You only get what you put in.
Scary in class, but very nice in office hours. I hate reading and writing, but he motivated me to get over these fears. This professor gladly makes time for students outside of scheduled office time, since he knows I help is needed and that students want it. Will definitely take him for English 103. Books are great reads. You must be responsible.
I don't understand the negative comments about Rodriguez ignoring students. I took him for summer and he always made himself available in the office and on email. He does say no weekend emailing, so of course, don't expect a response on the weekend. I almost dropped the course, but he encouraged me to complete the course. Besr A I have earned.
He a great professor. He is so organized which made it easier to understand the assignments. The readings and essays were always interesting
A lot of reading. Must participate and make sure you do the readings. Makes you buy a lot of books. In my opinion I found him to be really annoying and likes to talk about his students a lot.
Amazing professor! I have taken 3 of his classes (101, 102, 211) and loved every single one. He is VERY organized which makes everything flow so nicely within the class. His book choices are exceptionally interesting! Be prepared to participate and work for a grade with those essays! If you need help, he is very approachable! Would recommend!
If you want to be prepared for transfer, and life in general, take this prof. I saw that someone wrote "He puts you on blast" which I can only assume means he "calls you out if you say something incorrect" or dare to roll your eyes about something, yes he does. He is no nonsense and does that in order to help you be a better thinker. Great guy.
If you don't show up for three of his lectures he will automatically drop you. Quizzes are randomly given so be sure to read half the book the day before. Overwhelming work. Don't be surprised if you end the semester with eight students.
I only recommend this professor to the student that plans on transferring to a University. The workload is huge. However, it is level appropriate. If he says 5-page minimum and you write 4-pages, you get a zero for that essay. If you're a full-time student and/or work, take someone with a smaller workload, unless you're up for a challenge & stress
Horrible class, horrible teacher. Will flat out give you a Fail on an 8 page essay for minor formatting problems. Does not care about the context and effort/time you put into the essay. Instead of teaching the material properly he will just fail you, extremely frustrating and emotionally draining. Would not wish this class upon my worst enemy.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! He's exactly the type of inspirational teacher ELAC needs! He demands a lot from his students but it's not impossible to pass. He is clear on his rules so make sure you follow them. The people that rated him poorly probably didn't and so they didnt pass.. MLA format is important so make sure your essays are formatted properly.
Amazing English professor! He made writing essays a lot easier for me, I have some difficulty writing my thoughts in my essays in high school. The workload he gives is a lot, but it's okay for me. Make sure to get the correct books that he lists on his syllabus. Would take him again.
This was the hardest class ever! I seriously have no fear of writing 12+ page papers after this class, which is probably a good thing. This isn't the class you want, trust me, but it's the class you need to whip you into shape. ESPECIALLY if you intend on transferring to a 4 year institution.
Horrible professor. It looks like he has serious issues the entire semester he talked about transgender and gay people it was so overwhelming. He will give you an F on a 7 page essay just because you go against his ideas and views. He cancels class a lot but if you miss 3 times he will drop you. I DO NOT recommend him.
Worst teacher I ever took he has something against people with disabilities and don't know how to do the work he hates when people dont know what they r doing and hates when u ask him questions and for help and he gets really mad about it. U make 1 mistake on your essays he will automatically give u a zero even when u put time and effort on them.
Professor Rodriguez is very demanding & focuses on LGBTQ topics. If you don't do things his way he takes away alot of points or no credit. Must read alot of books at the same time & will be given quizzes. He has alot of rules for you but breaks his own without a problem (he checks his social media during class). He thinks he's great but he isn't.
Professor Rodriquez was a great professor. I took his class over the summer of 2017 and it was pretty tough. He is a tough grader, but if you put in the time to ask him questions and give yourself time to write the papers, you should be able to pass the class. My first essay I wrote, I got a C, but by the final 2, I got A's on both.
You do have to do a lot of work in there, mainly essays. From those essays, he gives you little to no feedback, and when there is feedback his writing is illegible. He's not afraid of giving an F to an A paper if said paper either: 1. goes against what he believes in 2. misses ceratin grammar/ formatting problems. Choose wisely and beware!
definitely have to do your reading and also attend class. I missed a total of two class periods and I was so lost when I came back the next meeting. Also I hated the book the marrow of tradition, it was very unrelatable. anyways when you're doing essays in his class, make sure its to his criteria or else he will not accept it.
I really enjoyed going to his class, and that says a lot because I hate English. His essays were fairly easy and he lays out his expectations for each writing assignment clearly which makes it easy to get a good grade. He gives a reminder of upcoming quizzes or due dates. He is funny and very caring. The attendance policy is fair -3 absences and W
He is very fair as he is trying to prepare his student if they decide to go to a 4 yr university. His books are bit difficult. attend all his classes and you will be good. If you don't do the reading the essays will be difficult. He is very clear on what he wants. I really enjoyed his class as he makes you think outside the box.
I definitely recommend him. He assigns a lot of work but only because hes preparing you for the transfer to UC/CSU. If you put in the work, he notices and is willing to work with you. He went above and beyond when I visited him during his office hours. Don't be afraid to ask for help. I've never met such a caring professor in my 2 years at ELAC
I remember taking this class in 2015 because I was desperate and his class was the only one available while everyone else was full. This professor made us rent/buy a textbook, which I had to wait 4 days for it to deliver then tells us that he is going to change the textbook. Wasted my money taking this class because he taught nothing.
I observed students spend more time complaining about the workload than doing the actual work. Yes, his class is challenging. But his level of teaching is unparalleled, mainly because he makes you critically think about what you're about to write. You actually learn with him. I feel more than ready for the University thanks to him.
He makes you work for your grade. If youre willing to put in the work then this class is for you. I got a 60% on the first quiz and a 70% on the first essay, but by the end of the term my grades changed to an A as I became more detail oriented due to his reading criteria. Great Class if youre trying to push yourself to new lengths.
A great and caring professor. He pushes you to be better. You cannot 'slack off ' in his class tho...
I have a love and hate relationship with this class, it a hard class but also easy at the same time. Your attendance is 50% of your grade, just don't miss any class day and read the books. His essay is decent, just follow the guideline he gave you and you will pass this class with at least a C with minimal effort.
By far one of the best professors I have had. Great lectures and reading assignments. Class was never boring. Participation is a must. You will be writing a lot, but the topics are interesting so you will be fine.
I absolutely loved his class, I only wish I had a lighter schedule. Do not take his class if you're filling your schedule up. There is tons of reading along with numerous literary analyses. To boot, he moves through the material very quickly. Great content and even better lecture but he assigns lots of work!
If you really want a college experience, Rodriguez is it. Many people hate against him, but he is so f'n caring. He could tell I wasn't doing the reading and kindly asked if I needed the books. He loaned me any book I didn't have. No questions asked. No prof has ever done that. High standards, high care, great prof.
English 102 was very difficult since I hadn't taken it for a few years. In total there were 4 papers, the last paper was 10 pages long. If you do not read you won't pass. He is very disciplined and expects people to follow instructions. A lot of taboo material.
Seems strict at first but is actually a great professor. Lots of essays and reading is a must. You can't get a good grade if you don't keep up with the material. You need to be able to manage your time and it'd mandatory to go to the reading center before you turn your essays in so you need your school ID. Would definitely take him again :)
Took in winter session with a lot of reading required back to back, stressful but don't regret taking in winter, just need to be wise with time management. Might seem difficult at first but very straight forward as long as you are keeping up with readings. Tests are open book which is good. Gives good feedback on assignments.
If your a person who has a hard time with english do not waste your time taking this guy. He gives alot and his class is very stressfull do not waste your time.
please listen to this review as you are reading this do not waste your time I promise you you are going to regret taking this guy I am saving you all from a stressful time from this guy trust me this guy has issues throughout the semester and takes it all out on his students even if he is the only teacher available still don't take him
I took this class based off of recommendations.I had initially loved his class. However, I grew to dislike his class as the online transition happened. He is not very accessible through email. You MUST read all the books. Could be understanding. TOUGH grader! I would've enjoyed his class if it was still in person. I improved in English but tough.
Im a student that doesnt procrastinate and makes sure to go onto canvas to not be backed up with work, but taking this course during the summer session was extremely difficult. He gave me a complete zero on an essay that i put work into and I thought was a B at best. I dont recommend him at all. I tried my best and always felt stressed. Awful.
The people complaining need to grow the f up! This is a college class, shouldn't be expected to be easy. Rodriguez is an amazing professor, he makes you work for your grade and I definitely see myself growing academically by taking him. He is a very tough grader but I appreciate that, it shows he truly cares. He is really cool as an individual too!
Professor Rodriguez is straight up tough, he will make you work for your grade. The texts are very hard to interpret, however, he is willing to help you achieve the grade you desire if you simply RESPECTFULLY ask for assistance and guidance. Overall show up to the zoom lectures, REAd, ask questions, and if you need assistance speak up.
- Lots of reading and HW - Tough grader - No diversity in his reading assignments or lectures
Professor Rodriguez does not teach an easy class, and he will make you work for your grade. He leads a class that opens your mind and gets you thinking about what the authors say. He is passionate about his teachings and cares that students learn and take something from his class, rare at ELAC. Side note: USE THE WRITING LAB!
Do not take. Very hard class and very hard assignments. Hard grader will nitpick your assignments if not done to his standards.
There is a lot of reading involved, but it's doable if you manage your time well. The grade for this class is essay heavy, which is why it is mandatory to go to the writing center at least once for each one. If you want to improve your writing and critical thinking, I recommend this professor. He actually cares about his students succeeding.
STRESSFUL. i turned in a paper and got such a low score on it when it was at least a C...You read a lot and not showing up costs you your grade. the day of class he puts up assignments to get points so if you miss class you don't get points and your grade goes down and he won't let you turn it in. do not take this class if you want an easy A.
College level professors.
Not too difficult of a class if you have a solid foundation in writing. There is a lot of reading involved, so don't get behind in the material. If you follow the guidelines he sets out for you, there should be no reason you don't pass. Remember: RWC Verification, Works Cited, Don't Summarize, Pace Yourself, Make an Outline.
I took this professor's class during the fall semester on an 8-week schedule. This professor is format heavy. Assignments involved three papers in total, two quizzes, and different readings, which he provided as pdf files through the modules. I don't recommend the class, but if you want to take it, go for it!
Professor Rodriguez is the best English professor I've ever had; his lectures and assignments are relevant and inspirational. Make sure to follow his criteria in rubrics exactly, ask lots of questions, and go to office hours! You won't pass the class if you don't read the material.
It is very tough for his work. You have to read very carefully and write essays with critical thinking on the topic given by him. Also very strict on grading the work. if you don't read you are going to fail the quiz, about 5 essays you have to write that it very hard, If you want to take it easy and pass, I won't recommend him.
Helps you understand things your having trouble with.
If you want to improve and better prepare your writing skills for the cal state/UC level then this is the class you need. Not an easy A but if you work hard and prepare well for the essays you will succeed. Go to tutoring if you are having difficulty with MLA other than that be sure to go to office hours for extra help.
8 books for a semester at a city college! I am now at a university and not any of my upper division professors have required us to buy 8 books like this guy. I dropped after the 1st day.
If you want a challenge, take this guy, reading goes by incredibly quickly and his essays are pretty hard, If you're starting in community college I wouldn't recommend him.
He gives quizzes that have nothing to do with the worksheet it's based on ! and he absolutely hates absent students
Beware, He grades extremely unfair and doesn't help at all whatever he believes, goes so even if you don't agree… he is bias and CLOSED MINDED so you have to side with his ideas to pass the class not your own.
everyone knows professors get $$$ by students who pass class.. their job is teach, that's all.Yet he does most to make u fail instead revising or helpful worksheets or really anything to help, he likes to challenge everything making it extremely horrendous for not only himself but everyone who dares stay in the class(goes from 30+ fully packed to6
Forcing Gay Agenda onto the class, unacceptable. Does not invest in his students education at all. Avoid at all costs, El Camino is the best as always.
Unrealistic grading skills. His favorite numbers are 1 & 0 for any grading, surprised there's even five students left after starting with 30+ …
he is just wrong and has personal emotional issues… randomly gets angry for taking photos of homework assignments written on board, gets mad when you “copy” his ideas even if you mention it first.
DO NOT take this class take any class for credit but AVOID this one. The only way to fire him is having absolutely zero students, and it's getting there. Teamwork.
He is a really hard teacher; I would recommend him for the students who want a challenge in terms of improving their writing skills & harsh critiques. My only complaint about P. Rodriguez is he very openly expresses favoritism in the classroom and tends to not have empathy or compassion for his students that are not ideal to his lifestyle.
Super awesome, very fun class BUT work is hard if you're slow. As long as you attend class and engage in discussions you will have the materials to do good!!!!
The English class taught by the instructor in question suffers from a significant lack of professionalism and fairness. The frequent use of inappropriate comments creates an uncomfortable and hostile learning environment for students.
Critical grader
Professor Rodriguez runs a challenging ENG102 class, with heavy emphasis on critical reading and writing. The workload is significant, but engaging with the material and using resources like unstuck ai can help you succeed. Not for the faint of heart, but worthwhile if you want to improve your skills.
Professor Rodriguez is most certainly one of the most strict professor i have ever had, I took this class without looking at this website so I had no clue what I was getting myself into. I passed the class with a B+ but I had to drop 2 other classes because the work load for this one counts for 2 classes. THIS CLASS IS NOT FOR THE WEAK!
He's very nice and gives you time to do his work, but he doesn't allow late work unless you're dying, haha, but also be ready to read a lot if you love reading, then this class would be a piece of cake, but if you're not a big reader. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!
The professor is a tough grader but he acknowledges your effort. We read 4 books in the semester and wrote an essay for each one. If you participate, ask for feedback, and attend the reading and writing conferences you should pass. He is all about writing a good paper.
