I'm a history Major and I dropped the class. He treated everyone like children (going so far as to pass out candy and make a guy show on a map where Europe is). His lectures are all over the place and it's impossable to take notes. Also, the reading assignments arn't covered in lecture until 3 classes later. Don't take him.
Oh my gosh this man is does not lecture well, it's so hard to take notes...his tests don't deal with the 2 books you're required to buy and he sweats a lot. Don't take this class if you want to succeed!
Lectures the entire class, but the lectures are interesting. Seems very knowledgable and tries hard to get the class involved, but if you're not good at taking notes I would avoid this class. Tests are pretty straight forward w/ an essay question. He tells you what the question will be before hand and he grades pretty easy.
Horrible teacher... Lecture does not go along with the book... Lectures to fast and to vague... His test requires alot of critical thinking and with vague notes I was not able to go very far... Got a C, horrible teacher... Do not recommend... I feel very strongly about that... You learn nothing from this man
The class was ok, wasn't what I expected. Thought it was going to be more interesting. The books we had to buy really didn't go with the class or what the teacher was talking about. All you had to do with the books was read out of them and you really couldn't find anything that had to do with the tests in them. The notes were very vague too.
The professors really nice and does try to make history interesting and tries to help. But his lectures are weird and he goes to fast. The readings from the books dont go with the lectures. The test is mainly of based on the notes and the notes arent much help either. His tests are 1/2 multiple choice and essay which made the class easier to pass
good teacher but power points get kinda boring after awhile. he has lots of knowledge though. if you add to the discussions in class it is more enjoyable.
HE WASN'T BAD, POWERPOINTS DID GET BORING THOUGH. BUT OVERALL THE CLASS WAS EASY, THE TESTS WERE EASY, I GOT AN "A" EVEN THOUGH I DIDN'T DO THE REQUIRED PRESENTATION. IF YOU WANT AN EASY "A" TAKE THIS CLASS.
I like the lectures, they are very interesting
He knows his history well and lectures very fast. I started using a recorder on him (if he knew it or not :/). He lectures all over the place. He gives lots of detailed information but his tests are broad.
Show up for all classes, take notes in lecture, and you will pass the tests. If you can't write a very structured essay for tests, don't take him. They count as half of all test grades. The other half is MC scantrons that broadly cover all lectures and readings. Get a good group for the project. I recommend this teacher highly!
I like him. He's smart and fun. Despite what other people say the readings did go along with the lectures. I mean they weren't the center of the lectures but they helped reinforce them. The test are easy, they are based on the lectures and they essay is sometimes based on the movies or lectures. I really enjoyed this class and the teacher.
He's a pretty nice guy, gets along with all his students it seems like. Lectures are kind of boring, you have to have a general background knowledge of history to pass his exams. Easy easy homework assignments. Easy B i would say. One group project that is more intimidating then it really is.
He was a really funny, helpful, and cool. Not hard, just makes you think. He has some cool videos he likes to show. I think that he's a bit on the liberal side ... not like extremely just a tad ... The class was fun and he's really knowledgeable on what he teaches and he really enjoys it too so that makes for a good teacher. I liked him ? I told so
he was very helpful and made history easy to learn. i would take his class again.
Very helpful!!! Amazing teacher. I've taken HIST 127, 170, and 171 and i suggest that everyone should take this teacher for future history corses. HW is not hard, however it is needed to pass his class. Has one group assgnmt and 3 tests. Great teacher.
he is a HORRIBLE teacher. VERY sarcastic, he thinks he is funny, really not. his lectures are SO boring, it's the same routine everyday. Should really move back to New York, I'd never take him again. oh, and he will mark you off for ANY GRAMMATICAL ERROR you have. Worse than my english teacher.. =0 UNFAIR grader
Overall a good teacher, you MUST come to class he takes attendence, his lectures are all over the place and taking notes is hard because he goes super fast, but the tests are super easy just really take your time on the essay its the most important part.
Prof Ashenmiller is very knowledgeable. He's a sponge, full of facts. There no making up extra facts. I don't know what these people are talking about...he's not boring. If you want to learn something, take him. He's full of info, yeah he talks fast, bring ur laptop and type out ur notes. He's a great teacher...if you want to learn take him.
This teacher is awesome. He makes jokes all the time, and there pretty funny. You only half 6 homework assignments, and one final research project. Mind you the project is only two pages long, if you go over two pages he gets mad. In a nutshell if you want an easy class that transfers, then take this dude, you wont regret it.
Professor Ashenmiller is very straightforward, and the class was pretty easy. About a page worth of notes every class, and you only have to do 6 EASY homework assignments throughout the whole semester. He is terrific at grading, and gives your papers back to you the next class. He reads your homework and worksheets thoroughly & is a great teacher.
He was a great professor. There is a lot of information to go over during the course of a semester and I think he presents it as interestingly as possible. If you show up to class and take detailed notes you should be able to get an easy A. I suggest you have at least an English 60 writing level if you are going to take his class.
Cool class and cool teacher.Take him and you wont regret it. homework is easy, tests are easy, and he makes his lectures interesting. info sticks in your head the way he teaches. you can get an A fairly easy.Just make sure you show up to class and youll do fine!
I liked this class a lot. It's relatively easy-- there aren't too many assignments, but if you miss a day you miss a few key terms that will be on the test. As long as you show up, you'll do just fine. Ashenmiller is funny and sarcastic and makes the subject matter interesting and easy to understand. I passed both 170 and 171 with an A.
I've taken this guy for two classes. Both times even more cool than the last time i took him. He's incredibly sarcastic and can be kinda rude(although i'm sure he doesn't realize it). All around cool teacher, the kind you wish you could be friends with.
Great teacher! Really funny and informative. Only 6 small assignments and 2 or 3 easy papers. I guarantee you the people that say he marks you off for grammar are probably people who have no idea how to write a paragraph. Funny, good looking, and makes the class interesting.
Mr. Ashenmiller is a great teacher that just expects students to be at college level. He's not hard, just willing to point out things college students should already know (like how to write grammatically correct). He makes great use of class time, includes relevant information in interesting ways, and was always great with helping anytime. take him
So fun! You don't need the textbook, just the document book. He gives amazing lectures that won't bore you. Take good notes on the lecture terms he talks about and you'll get an A. He grades really easy!! Definitely worth taking!!
a good professor who make keeps lectures interesting. his courses are slightly writting intensive. exams are not detail oriented (ie you dont need to know certain dates of events as long as you know what happend)
this guy is an awesome teacher. his lectures aren't boring and keeps u interested in the class. class discussions are very very helpful.
The book he uses is clear and to the point, lectures are interesting even if you take it once a week for 2-3 hrs. Grades are based on: exams half multi choice and half essay, homework assignments here and there, and a research paper. Take notes in class, its exactly whats on the exams. The better the notes, the better you will do.
Just got done with his class and will be taking his HIST 170 class in the fall. Good teacher. Keeps you paying attention. Just do assignments and show up and there is no way you can fail.
this was an esay class. you just have to show up to take the notes to pass the tests. there is only two tests, the midterm and final. he gives out homework assignments but it is a a paragraph only it was an easy class and fun
very good teacher, take good notes, he points out everything you need to know for the midterm and final and one paper gives you choices for the paper topic. for the tests he gives you a study guide. gives many chances for extra credit. do the the work and you will pass. not alot of hmwk given. i definitely recommend his class
Ashenmiller is an awesome teacher! I do not find history classes interesting but he changed my mind once I took his class. If you take copious notes, pay attention to his interesting lectures, and do all homework assignments you will do GREAT. If you decide to take his class you will not regret it.
Mr. Ashenmiller was an awesome teacher. The class was incredibly easy. The class consists of note taking, lectures, movies, and class discussions. The tests are multiply choice and are simple to pass. There are a few homework assignments, but they are not difficult. I would highly recommend this class to anyone. Mr. Ashenmiller is a great professor
Took this class for summer, didn't buy the textbook, didn't borrow it or read it. Ashenmiller's sort of a smart ass but I suppose he can be because he backs up his knowledge. He's a cool prof.
This is the 1 and ONLY good history teacher I've ever found in my entire lifetime. He gives powerpoint notes for you to copy down that are an overview of his lecture. He also explains everything well and is always in his office. I took History 170 and 171 with him and got an A both times. He's awesome!!
Awesome teacher. I'm not all that interested in History but he made it relevant to today and brought up many current topics to make it easier to understand. Homework was mostly reading the book. He's funny=)
hes a chill guy, i never used my book just take notes and you'll be fine. hes passionate about history and it makes the class enjoyable. homework every now and then but nothing hard. test are easy and funny. only downside is hes really picky about the way you write
out of all the classes ive taken at fc this is the only one ive ever liked!! his lectures are interesting and i really enjoyed most of the videos we have watched. class is not too difficult if you take notes, show up, and do the hw. overall a great class you should take!!!
This class is basic and straightforward. Homework every now and then. One 2 page research paper. One midterm, one final. Be sure to take notes, they can be very helpful. Only negative about the guy, is he is super picky when it comes to writing. Other than that, he's an okay guy. I would recommend him.
I took the second US class, the class was not difficult, but you do have to pay attention in class. Take good notes because of the in-class essay. He doesn't give you much hw either. But you do need the textbook for the test. I'm selling the 2 textbooks that he require, email me [email protected] I will sell it for a good price!
I'll make this short. TAKE HIS CLASS. You will have fun. As long as you study, listen during the lectures, and do the homeworks, you will get an A. Sir Joshua is very clear and he knows his stuff. Engaging, a bit sarcastic (in a good way), and a lot of fun. Love him!
Probably one of the greatest history professors I have ever had. Really engages the class in discussion and doesn't attempt to deceive by using unclear questions on exams like other history professors i've had...
Very good professor. Kind of anal when it comes to grading papers and worksheets, but very informative in lectures so midterms are easier than most history classes. Gives points for attendance everyday there is class. Not interested prior but motivated me to attend because he made lectures fun. Take plenty of notes on ALL readings for best results.
Got a D with another professor and now I have a B with Ashenmiller. He talks SUPER fast and you have to take quick notes, but he weights out all of the assignments with the midterm and test so you can get a decent grade. He's picky about papers, but will still give you points if you deserve them. I hate history, but his class was pretty cool.
He is very intelligent, charismatic, and really passionate about history. I enjoyed the lectures and all the videos he brought to class. You can tell he enjoys teaching. It's easy to get an A or a B+ if you take good notes and do all homework the assignments. I hated the book, so I didn't read it and still got an A.
I took Ashenmiller fall of '11 and I loved his class! He is the reason I became sure I wanted to be a History major. There is a cohesive outline to the lectures as there is a powerpoint he uses with lists of key terms he wants us to focus on. He is easy to talk to and eager to help those who need it. He provides very thorough corrections on papers.
I'm an international student & I hardly ever studied about US history before. To me this class was very hard, but I think if you learn about the US history before this will be easy for you. He's a liberal&likes Obama a lot,so don't write anything bad about Obama or he'll pick on everything u write.Just follow his instructions u'll be fine.Got an A :)
He seems to be very interested in his subject, which makes listening to his lectures more enjoyable. If you attend class and take notes his class is super easy. I would definitely recommend him to others!
He puts up a list of topics on a powerpoint slide then talks about each point. Take notes on what he says. There's nothing to write from the powerpoint. It's just pictures. He narrates everything in detail. He's picky when it comes to writing though
great teacher. if you pay attention and do hw (which is easy) you will pass the course. he is very clear, wants you to pass, and works with students well.
very hard professor.. talk very fast and exam are tricky and no extra credit ..do not take it if you want an A
He was a great professor! His lectures were very straight forward and he related allot to life happening today. He was willing to answer questions in class and involved the class in open discussions. He also had flexible office hours. I definitely recommend his. class.
This teacher was very great with how he explained things but picky on english. Just stick to his notes and you will be fine and be there everyday and try all assignments. I did and I passed with a B. But I never used the book or read it.
I took this class as a requirement and now I am interested in taking more history classes. Take good notes and read the text book. Professor Ashenmiller has a good sense of humor and makes the class interesting.
I liked this professor. He is clear and engaging, and the primary textbook is a 70 page document that can be printed for like, 7 dollars. I never purchased the other textbook. his tests are 5 short paragraphs. it took a few days to get me an add code, so i guess this professor in somewhat high demand. I'm not a hist major, this class was easy. :)
Didn't use the textbook once. The midterm/final is based on an 80pg. sourcebook you have to print and bring to class every day. You have around 25 terms for the midterm/final. He randomly chooses 5 that you have to write on. He likes to ramble, and it feels like you're not doing much at times. Pretty picky with written assignments.
Didn't use the online textbook even though I bought it and I'm finishing the semester with an A. He's insanely intelligent, just take good notes and pay attention. Everything is pretty straightforward. A midterm, final, research paper, a one day group assignment and maybe four worksheets to do in class while watching a video.
Show up to class (you get points for each day). He gives you the terms for the final and midterm on the first day! Take good notes when he lectures about the terms ... and you'll be fine. Smart and a very passionate lecturer. He knows his stuff. Wonderful! I love history, and he made me love US History even more.
RECOMMEND!!!!! Passionate lecturer, easy tests, you learn so many interesting things about American history, and you WILL NOT REGRET THIS CLASS. Take intensive notes on terms and show up to class every day if you can. This man is a history genius.
He is a very spirited lecturer and is very intelligent. Pay attention in class and you will learn a ton of new things. He is very picky on the research paper and midterm on styles of writing. He doesnt like the fluff writing, he just wants you to get to the point. Go to class every day and you will get points for showing up and should pass.
best teacher! He is always wanting to listen to student opinions. Only two tests, midterm and final. If you study you should be able to pass the class. His class is always entertaining.
Great professor! He gives interesting lectures and is extremely helpful. He's a tough grader so do be as specific as you can. Recommended!!
I used to think American history was boring, until I took this guy. If you actually want to learn something, take this class. Exams are challenging if you don't study your notes. The textbook is a waste of money. Be very specific with your wording, or else your papers will be painted blue.
Very enthusiastic prof., willing to make things clear if you ask. Show up to class and you will get points. Didn't use online book. Read articles before class. One midterm, one paper, & final. Get to the point on the paper; will give you a chance to re-do it. Take notes on the terms, it will make studying easier. Gives extra credit opportunities.
I LOVE Ashenmiller! He's the best. You can tell he really loves history and it was such a joy going to class each day. He is very respectful towards everybody's opinion when things get a little too political and he urges everybody to ask questions and share ideas. His encouragement alone makes him worth taking. Definitely recommended!
Worst teacher I've ever had!! He is rude and condescending. He is a VERY hard grader, his comments he writes correcting you come off rude and he is not helpful at all when you ask him a question!! He is a horrible teacher.. if you want an easy A do not take this class.
He's funny, smart, and a nice guy overall - but DON'T BE DECEIVED. He teaches class as if he were instructing history majors at a university TO students taking rudimentary History classes at a junior college. Absolutely insane expectations. Average students will likely fail. Would ONLY recommend to 4.0 students or history buffs.
By far the absolute best history professor I've ever had! His teachings go along with current history, each semester will be different. For notes write down a lot of what he says. His tests are from terms which he gives students the first day of class. The research paper is probably the most difficult. Take his class! Ask questions always!!!!
History is my least favorite subject, but this guy makes me want to come to class. He is VERY picky when it comes to the way you write, but in reality, it'll make you a better writer--not just in his class, but for the rest of your academic career. He's very funny and his excitement for the subject is contagious. Definitely take this guy's class.
Enthusiastic about the subject! He loves history and knows his stuff! He is funny, understanding and a good teacher! I wish I would have taken him for 171 also! Most of the reading comes from the source book that he assembles and asks you to print, its over 50 pages, but cheaper than buying a book. there re 3 books used altogether and you NEED them
I really enjoy coming to this class. This teacher has a well trained mind. Good memory, positive, and well knowledge in the field. By the grace of the Lord I am privileged to have such a well rounded teacher.
Prof. Ashenmiller is a very intelligent professor especially in history. The only in class assignments are evaluating the sourcebook, so always have it. HW is basically reading an online book that we don't go over in class. Tests are tough and so is the research paper. Be specific when it comes to writing your answers for anything.
PROS: lots of extra credit opportunities, helps you understand the history and lectures, very hands on with lectures, midterm and final is just writing an essay (no traditional exams) CONS: lots of reading, there's 4 different books for the class, grades tough on papers, get ready to re-write every paper for a better grade
Ashenmiller is a funny, intelligent man who loves teaching about history & getting his students involved. I took his summer course which contains a midterm, final, research paper & HW here & there that are all pretty easy as long as you put the work into it. He's very anal about students writing but gives 2nd chances to make it better. I recommend!
Really into the subject. Keeps the class interesting and makes the students think outside the box. Offers extra credit and allows rewrites for your papers which really helps your grade.
Talks very fast but not in a boring way, I truly learned a lot in this class. He gives his midterm and final in the syllabus so you can study throughout the course and it's nice knowing what to expect on the tests. He is a tough grader though and is very specific in what he wants. He's not the nicest person but he always brings food so...
A great professor! I took his 171 summer class and found it to be the first history class I actually enjoyed. He doesn't just teach the same boring facts and dates you learned in high school, but has a way of making it come to life. Homework was simple to do, but his papers were graded pretty tough. Lots of extra credit, and loves questions! 8/10
This was the most unconventional history classes I've ever taken, which I loved. His lectures were easy to follow and his text expectations were hard to screw up; he even includes ALL possible midterm&final topics in the syllabus so you know what to take notes on! I read the (online) book at first, but I stopped and got away with a high grade.
He's very good at teaching. Show up, do the work and you should be fine.
Awesome teacher. Participation really helps when it comes to understanding in his class. He's passionate about his job. Offers tons of extra credit, and there is not a lot of reading required. Even let us use notes on our midterm and final.
I took his class for the 5 week summer course and I loved it. He is very passionate about history and even brings snacks on movie days. His lectures are fun and so interesting. He is also very understanding. Had a family emergency and had to miss the midterm. But he let me take it when I was ready and during his office hours. Highly recommend!!
He's a really, really good professor. Tough grader when it comes to the writing assignment, but overall he's lenient. Easy A/B
Awesome professor!! lets you rewrite your papers for better grade! Offers plenty of extra credit! He has entertaining topics and discussions. Take plenty of notes it will come in handy when you take the midterm and the final. I would defiantly recommend taking this class you will not regret it! If you don't get a good grade you really did not try
He's the best History teacher ever. Very funny and knowledgeable. He makes history extremely exciting. Super tough grader but provides lots of extra credits and rewrite opportunities.
I learned a lot in his class! He made history really fun, there are a lot of lectures and reading but it is never a dull time in his class! His grading is clearly explained and he offers many extra credit opportunities that promote class involvement. It's hard to get a bad grade if you put a normal amount of effort in.
Very clear lectures and straight forward test. He is always willing to clarify and answer your questions.
I took Professor Ashenmiller this semester for History 171, the second in the sequence for American history. He's the toughest grader I've ever had as far as his papers/essays go, however he also gives the most feedback. Prof. Ashenmiller is extremely caring, intelligent, and dedicated. He had knee surgery and still only missed a couple classes.
Be prepared to do some reading. Believe me when I say even the average reader/note taker will receive a fair grade. He is blunt with his grading so dont feel intimidated by his straight forward remarks. Show up to class. Participate and definitely turn in work on time. Youll be fine.
He is a tough grader. He has a midterm and a final which is non-cumulative. A few papers in between, and a term paper (2 pages). He assigns a rewrite for each paper. I would recommend going to class and taking a lot of notes and follow his instructions/feedback for papers. He lets you bring a 3x5 notecard with anything on it (even typed) for exams.
Don't take this class unless you already know a lot about American History. Grade is based off of a few writing assignments which you will have to rewrite for a better grade. Hard to tell what to take notes on. He has an unclear grading system.
Very good worded and a bit fun as well.
TAKE HIS CLASS! One of the best classes I have ever taken. His class is like a great movie that youre only going to get halfway through by the end of the semester so you want to take the second half. He knows what hes talking about and is so passionate that it makes you want to learn. Very straight forward and gives lots of EC.
His class structure is easy to manage. Couple of writing assignments that you can redo for better grades. His midterm and final are simple. During the semester he gives you key terms/people/events that you will need to learn on the tests you only write about 5 terms 1 paragraph each. Index card can be used. Not too hard plus hes an ok dude.
Pro Ashenmiller was my fav professor everyday I looked forward to his class and lecture. He does grade hard but every assignment you can rewrite. He makes history interesting and easy to understand. make sure you have the sources printed out so you can take notes and make friends dos u can study for the midterm and final. TAKE HIM IF UR A HIST NERD
I took History 170 with Prof. A about 10 years ago. If you're a good student, his class is easy. If you love history, then you'll find Ashenmiller's lectures very entertaining. I came here to pay tribute to one of my favorite instructors at FJC. Because of him, I was inspired to pursue History as a major. Two years ago I earned my MA in History. TY
It seems like he doesn't even read his own assignments. Whenever I did assignments that he assigned he would have requirements on what to fulfill to achieve full credit. I would fulfill those requirements on the assignment but when he grades my assignment he would leave comments that made no sense because he'd ask why im answering them.
Isn't a good online teacher. And will grade heavily and give only the tinest bit of help . He's not very helpful and will talk down to you if you ask a question about grades or how do you get the extra credit he offers.
History is My first class was taken at Fullerton college and I was totally panic as an ESL student. The first two weeks, it was very challenging because I was not into history at all, and Prof. A' lecture is kind of fast and hard for me. However, after spending more time reading his lecture, I got big progress and got A. He is so appreciated!
Joshua Ashenmiller has a very arrogant attitude, He thinks he's the smartest and most educated historian. He has no regard for NEW college students he goes to weekly questions picks apart peoples question and their grammar as if it matters at the time. The thing with people with degrees is they don't realize no one cares they have a degree.
As long you show up to class and pay attention you should be fine. I didnt know much about history but still passed. You should know that he his very picky when it comes to writing assignments and wants you to be clear . His lectures were decent yet interesting and you learn from them. You can always redo writing assignments for a better grade.
His lectures were very fun to listen to and extremely engaging, and I had very little homework. He is pretty strict with grading and grammar but you can rewrite all the assignments, including the midterms, so it instead gets to be a way to improve your writing skills which I loved. Overall I had a blast coming to class every day, I'd take him again
Absolutely loved Professor Ashenmiller. As long as you are showing up to class and paying attention, there is no reason not to pass.
Professor Ashenmiller has been one of my favorite professors so far. You can tell he genuinely loves the subject he teaches, and enjoys teaching. He does all he can to encourage his students to not only learn, but enjoy history. He allows rewrites on all essays, so if you're willing to put in the work, passing the class is no problem.
Very good and knowledgeable. Loves in class discussions and as long as you participate you will be a class favorite. bonus points because if you show up to every class you do not have to take a final.
He kept history simple and fun. He explained everything in detail and we learned history through actual primary sources, rather than words in a textbook. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities as well. Only downside is that he thoroughly grades every assignment, and there are not a lot of them.
Great professor and great class! It took me awhile to get used to his humor and feedback on assignments, so I wouldn't take anything he says personal. The midterm and final are all short answer that are done at home, peer edited in class, and then edited by him where you have the option to revise them and resubmit. Informative, laid back, and fun!
I really enjoyed professor Ashenmillers class. He makes his class straight forward, interesting, and very immersive. He has so much knowledge in the history field so its very interesting listening. The midterms are 1 paragraph essays. He is a tough grader but he gives alot of feedback and will let you rewrite. I finished with a high score. Take him
Prof. Ashenmiller is a very strict grader. If you do take this course be SUPER specific in your essays and pay attention to the topics discussed in class because you will have to write about them. There also aren't many assignments so it's tough to improve your grade if you mess up.
Took three of his classes, each one was taught similarly, very collaborative, a lot of group work and discussion, but very little actual assignments. and the final wasn't mandatory based on attendance. Very easy going prof and highly recommend to take any history class he teaches
First of all, there's no homework! 90% of what you do is all in class and you can rewrite everything. No penalty for late work. Midterms are available starting week 1 and open note/book all on your own time. Grades hard on your argument. Gives excellent feedback if/when you do lose points. First midterm I got less than 50% rewrote got 96% on both.
He's probably one of the best professors I've had at Fullerton college. He has many assignments where he encourages students to engage.Unlike other professors, he is OK if you don't agree with him he encourages you to challenge things And in everything you do in the classroom he will try to make it engaging.
I was thinking that because the class was going to do essays I needed to pay attention a lot. Turns out I didn't need to do that because you would go over all 8 question essays in class. Very easy class people were on their phones and he didn't mind. Make sure to just have ur 1 paragraph (really is just 1) for 4/8 questions. Simple and easy.
If you have perfect attendance you can skip the final. He's a tough grader but if you do the work you should get an A. There's extra credit available as well.
