Dr. Smith is awesome! :) He wanted to be added; so, I did, and if you get a chance to take his class - DO! He's really a cool guy. I can't say how easy he is because I'm in his honors section, but he's a really good teacher, and his tests aren't that bad.
Dr. Smith is a really great teacher. He is extremely knowledgable and really wants his students to succeed. He is very helpful with the class and also a useful resource for future plans in biomedical science. I would highly recommend taking his class and making use of his willingness to help you do well.
VERY NICE!! and always helpful!! answers any questions in class and definately tries to help you out if you are willing to make the effort, however, it does take a lot of effort and only science majors should take this class... but again... he is very interesting and nice!
I took this as my honors course. He's a really great teacher, but labs can be a bit confusing. He expects you to already know a lot about what you are doing, however this is an entry level course. I spent most days in lab confused and asking others for help.
He is new this year and really wants the program to be helpful in future courses. He is awesome and I would highly suggest him.
He is very helpful and if you put in the work you will get the grade you want!!! I highly recommend him if you have to take a class that he teaches!!!
Dr. Smith is a great professor. If you put in the work to do well then you will. His study guides are very extensive but if you know the material on it, then you are set for the exam. He is turning this department around, in a good way!
Dr. Smith was BY FAR my favorite teacher last semester. His lectures were interesting, the material was challenging and very interesting. He is helpful and considerate and is doing a great job in his new position. I look forward to taking Smith's recombinant DNA class later. Fabulous teacher!
Dr. Smith was by far my favorite teacher last semester. I am an Exercise Science major, and I took the class as an Intro course for my major and for a Gen. Ed. Dr. Smith was always willing to answer questions. Fil out the study guides and you'll do well on the tests. Dr. Smith rocks and I would definitley recommend his class.
Dr. Smith is an ok teacher. He really knows his pharmacology, however the class is quite intense. He budges none on grades at end of semester, so do extra credit and study for quizes.
Dr. Smith is a wonderful teacher. His lectures are very understandable. Do the study guide and go to study sessions and you can easily get an A or B. He is very willing to help but do not ask him to up your grade at the end of the semester just do all the bonus! If you ask he will take away all bonus points you earned.
Dr. Smith is a really great professor that is willing to go above and beyond for his students. You can really tell he cares about his students and knows the material. This class isn?t a cakewalk but if you go to class and pay attention and attend his study sessions/fill out the study guides the test aren't too bad.
Dr. Smith is awesome. He is really passionate about what he teaches and really wants all his students to succeed. He holds study sessions before every test which are extremely helpful and is always willing to help you understand the material. I highly suggest you take one of his classes if given the option to. You will learn a lot.
he has beautiful eyes :) it captured me and made me want to do good! sit up front
I was in the honors section and it is by far my favorite class! I didn't want it to end. Dr. Smith is very helpful and clear. You can tell he really loves what he's teaching and it makes you love it too. Lab for honors is awesome! It's hard to understand at first, but so worth it! Tip: Do the study guides and go to the study sessions!
This class was extremely easy if you study well for tests. 5 tests worth 70 points each take up the majority of the points. The class material is taught at a quick pace, but if you study heavily for tests, you should get an easy A. The professor was always open to questions in and out of class. There were plenty of bonus opportunitites.
This was a hard class but nothing anyone can't get an A or B in by studying hard. Use your lab to bring up your grade. Joseph Smith was a great teacher, very helpful with questions, getting back to students, and making time during his day.
I loved Dr. Smith. I am a first semester freshman who came with zero study skills and this class pushed me to do very well and make good habits. Attendance is mandatory only if you want to do well. He stays at school everyday from 7 am to 8 pm or later and is very accessible for help. He makes it hard to get a C or lower if you do things his way.
Dr. Smith is a great teacher. I had no idea how much this class covered and to what extent. There is a LOT to this class, come to class and do the quizez and reading. He goes out of his way to help those who need it. There are many resources for the class which help out a lot. I Highly recommend this instructor. He makes you want to do your best.
Good teacher, great guy, fun class.
Dr. Smith is a great teacher. I would recommend him to anyone for BMS110. He provides many extra credit opportunities and will go out of his way to help you.
Dr. Smith is a great teacher. I recommend reading before the lectures. He does study guides for his exams. He offers many extra credit opportunities. You can tell he really loves teaching. The exams are hard, but he pushes you to study really hard. He also holds study sessions before each test.
Great class! He is very understanding, I did not do a discussion because I completey forgot and he only took two points off. He has lame jokes and laughs at them, but love the class!
Dr. Smith is a great professor. He really knows what he's talking about and is completely willing to help his students. I came into the class with prior knowledge of the material, but i helped others prepare for exams by doing his study guides. You can definitely tell he loves what he does, he's constantly making cheesy jokes about whatever he is teaching, but they're funny if you understand the material. Pop quizzes come straight from lectures & don't skip, attendance is taken electronically
Hard tests but go to the review sessions and don't blow off studying and you'll be fine. Great teacher though
This professor does not give out A?s but you will leave his class knowing that you earned your grade.
Dr. Smith gives you everything you need to get an A. You have the exact PPT slides that he uses in lecture prior to class. The important words are highlighted in in the notes, he gives you a study guide for every chapter, has review sessions before tests, and there are SI sessions all week. If you do all of this, its hard to not pass this course.
The teacher was very clear in what he expected. He also was involved in making sure that students understand and will pass the class if they put forth effort. He Supplied study guides and quizzes that were very helpful for the exams.
By far my favorite professor. You have to work hard for your grade. Do the study guides for each chapter that he provides and go to class EVERYDAY! If you work hard you can get an A and it will feel great. Final is questions from previous tests, and he lets you keep all tests. Work hard in lab to help your overall grade. Great class!!
You need to earn your grade but I found that this professor worked hard to make sure we all understood the material. He held study sessions prior to all of the tests to make sure all questions were answered and always responded to all emails I sent.
Great teacher that really wants his students to excel. I took the honors section and learned a lot in lecture and lab. Do the study guides and go to the review sessions and you're golden!
Awesome teacher, gives you all the tools needed to succeed. He gives out study guides and holds review sessions for each test. Not to mention, his PPTs are great because they contain all the information you need to know, so book usage is minimal. Very straightforward and friendly. You can tell he loves the material and teaching.
Wonderful teacher! I couldn't have asked for a better teacher. Nicest man you will ever meet. Attendance points, online quizzes, and easy assignments for hight points. If you forget an assignment, he will let you turn it in by the end of the day for full credit. Tests are some times difficult but if you put in time to study, easy A.
Nicest guy in the world. if you put work into his class, you will for sure do good. he is always understanding and there to help. i would take him as a teacher in every class i have if i could.
Dr. Smith is a great teacher. I took the honors course and while it was difficult, it was managable if you put the effort in. He will do ANYTHING to help with any questions. Definately study way before the tests because they are hard but the study guides are spot on. Overall, he's great and I hope I can have him in a later class.
Great guy, really wants you to pass with a good grade. Very willing to help.
This guy is a great teacher. Always helps you if you need help. He goes out of his way to remind you of online quizzes and homework that's due. He is an excellent teacher. His tests aren't too hard, but you have to study for them.
He was a really great teacher. This is a challenging class, but if you study you will be fine.
Amazing teacher. Totally recommend if majoring in biomedical sciences. You will learn a lot from him. I don't recommend skipping class, and you will have to study. He is always willing to answer questions if you have any. Really easy to get a hold of at any hour. He honestly cares about his students. Take him if possible, you won't regret it! :)
I took Dr. Smith for BMS110 honors. It was definitely a time consuming class, but well worth it. I learned more in his semester long class than I learned in all 4 years of science in highschool combined. He's an excellent teacher and a very helpful and nice guy. Definitely recommend him to anyone interested in the BMS field.
Nice guy. Obviously cares about the students and wants you to pass. Gives a lot of chances for extra credit if your willing to do the work. Tests were just about right, hard, but he gives you study guides and copies of the lecture powerpoints he uses. Knows his stuff too. I'd take a class by him again in a heartbeat.
TAKE HIM! gives study guides before every test. final is mainly from old test. memorize got A's on all test because I memorized the study guide. super nice fun guy! very willing to help. gives extra credit. go to class everyday bc there are pop quizzes and he gives you points. notes are sometimes confusing so i would use the book sometimes.
I took this class as an honors course. Lecture was fine, just a lot of material. He gives study guides and holds study sessions before exams. Lab was a little difficult, a lot of work with the notebook and lab reports, but it was interesting. He is always willing to help and easy to contact.
great guy, super helpful, amazing teacher. take him as much as possible!
He was a great teacher. To do really well in this class just read the book, come to class, pay attention, and study for tests. It was my favorite class last semester and Dr.Smith really cares about how his students do. He doesn't hand out good grades but if you try in the class you will do fine.
His tests vary on the difficulty, but he does offer a couple of extra credit oppurtunities and the final consists of 120 questions 20 from each test and you get all of the tests back with a key, so the final is super easy to prepare for. Some of the homework assignments are kind of hard though.
I thought the class was easy because I had learned the information earlier in high school, but I'm certain if I had not already known the material, his teaching style would have confused me. When lecturing, he can go about saying things oddly and it can be fairly difficult to understand at times. Otherwise he is really helpful and understanding.
He was a very good teacher. Super clear and helpful if you went to his office to ask questions. You can tell that he loves his job which make me want to be a Biologist!!!
Super helpful and nice! Only advice: read the book before class otherwise you might have trouble following the explanations. He is EXTREMELY approachable and obviously cares a lot about how each student does in his class. Very willing to take time to help you if you're struggling. And he knows his stuff. I definitely recommend him!
Dr. Smith is the most jolly guy I know. He is an excellent professor. He absolutely expects the best out of his students, which is how every professor should be. But anyway, he is very approachable and will answer any questions. The tests aren't terrible as long as you do a good amount of studying. I highly recommend Dr. Smith :)
He is the most amazing professor I have ever had! He really cares about his students. He is so jolly and a overall nice guy. I felt very comfortable asking him questions. This is a tough course (especially the honors section) but if you work hard you can get an A. I would high recommend him as a professor!
His class was a lot of notes and nothing else. Sometimes the lectures were no intersting, but overall I learned a get deal about the subject. The tests are not too bad as long as you study. There are always two study sessions before every test and those help a lot. He makes himself available if you have any questions also.
I am a CMB major, so I figured I would enjoy this class. The lectures were boring, and the exams were hard because we didn't really have homework or quizzes. You basically have to read and reread the book and study all of the notes. I spent hours per week working on homework for him- all for a B+. I was glad that the lab part padded my grade.
He really cares a lot about how his students do in his class. I would recommend reading the textbook because it helps a lot. The tests aren't too hard as long as you study and fully understand the material. he is a really nice guy but lectures can be a bit boring.
He is a very nice professor, but unless you are a CMB/BMS major, you will probably struggle in this class. The tests are very difficult (even after attending every lecture and studying for hours)He is really bad at wording questions for worksheets is also very bad at explaining how to do conversions, which is a big part of the class.
Dr. Smith is incredibly smart. His lectures confused some people, but especially if you're a CMB major, you'll like him. The class has a ton of material, and it's challenging, but there's study guides, study sessions, and quizzes to study with. He rarely answers e-mails, but he's more than willing to help during office hours and actually cares.
Dr. Smith is a very intelligent professor, however, this is what made the course pretty difficult. His exams are toughly worded, but in the end not too bad. Notes in class are just off powerpoint. STUDYYYYYY and always go to his study sessions before exams!
I absolutely hated this course. I was nothing but happy for the end! Dr. Smith is very smart but his lectures are WAY too difficult for an INTRO class. Certain sections of his INTRO stuff was more difficult than my upper classes. I would HIGHLY recommend finding a different professor. I am an A/B student and received a D. Something doesn't add up!
Favorite class in college. Fantastic professor with a plethora of knowledge. He'll help if you ask him questions. Always ask Q's! CMB major, but other majors can succeed if you study the material hard. The PowerPoints have all the info he wants you to know. Print them out & study those. Write notes on all he says, come to class! Book isn't needed.
This professor tries to make the grades on a bell curve and has to make the class hard with his own worded questions on 4 exams plus a final. The reason: to even out the class grades for those that make easy As or think that his class is cake. Questions on exams are things that are not taught in class or in lecture for eg. blood flow of heart!
Dr. Smith knows his stuff and is very fair. However, he expects you to hold up your end of the deal and work hard. The most difficult thing is a lengthy, professional-quality lab report. I didn't have any trouble with the exams, and the final is very forgiving. Offers study sessions for each test (GO!!!!) and is very helpful in lab.
Great professor! He did everything in his own power to give the students the opportunity to succeed. He really cares about each student. Studying is necessary, working hard is a must. Tough course, but necessary for a good foundation in the biomedical sciences. Dr. Smith will help out in any way he can!
Dr. Smith is a really good teacher. The projects we do are helpful and interesting. But we do a lot of projects and papers. They are not hard and high school would have prepared you for them. You will learn about the university and discuss the book you read in class, which is for a grade.
Dr. Smith is smart but he works fast and, at this level, he wants you to keep up. Make sure you stay on top of things and get clarification as you go or you'll be stuck in a rut later on. Midterm is tough. Final is oral and relatively easy. Come to class ON TIME or you lose points! Good teacher.
I really enjoyed BMS 110 with Dr. Smith. Lectures are pretty long, but he provides with the powerpoints to fill in which are very helpful for the tests. Also fill out the study guides because they help with tests too! Not that hard of a class as long as you took more than one biology class in high school. Recommend!!
Dr. Smith is very intelligent and kinda goofy but a great teacher. His lectures are long and he expects a lot but he is always offering help with office hours and GO TO THE STUDY SESSIONS!! He is very helpful if you ask. Participation points daily.
I loved bms with Dr. Smith. The class is hard but you learn A LOT by the end of it. Definitely take it with him if you plan on going into the medical field. He is a really nice guy and always in a great mood!
This class is very challenging. I really had to work for my grade and it sometimes felt like a full time job... However, Smith is very dedicated and willing to answer any questions you have.
Dr. Smith truly is a modern day super hero. His passion is helping his students learn and succeed in life. By far the best college proffeser ive had.
Dr. Smith is a fantastic teacher- he definitely doesn't make things easy, but if you put in the work and ask for help you'll get an A. In general he's a great guy, hilarious, and keeps class interesting. I'll miss having him!
Tough class, but work hard and you will get a good grade. Dr. Smith has a great balance of points, so if you are a bad test taker, you can still receive a good grade by showing him that you work hard on homework. This class seems like "death by powerpoint" sometimes, but if you study the powerpoints, you will be fine.
He is an amazing teacher and his lectures are interesting. Lab is a blast but sometimes you don't now what is going on til the end. Don't sleep in his class or be lazy in this class. Highly recommended.
Dr. Smith is incredibly knowledgeable. The tests are hard, yes, but he is always there to help. There is a great balance of grades. I had not taken very many biology classes in high school, so most of this information was new, but in the end, this is probably the most I have ever learned in one class. Take him, trust me.
I really enjoyed this class. It was my favorite class by far of any class I have ever taken. Dr. Smith is a great professor who will do anything to help you if you need it. I respect him and I'll try and take as many classes with him as I can.
I really enjoyed this class. It was my favorite class by far of any class I have ever taken. Dr. Smith is a great professor who will do anything to help you if you need it. He will always give 110% if you are willing to also. I respect him and I'll try and take as many classes with him as I can.
Great teacher! The lecture material could sometimes be a little confusing but if you ever have questions, Smith is more than happy to answerclarify things for you. I would definitely recommend for anyone in the Science pathway (even as someone not continuing in science, this is definitely a doable class, just expect to work and study for it!)
Dr. Smith is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met... sometimes a little confusing. He is always willing to help if you don't understand, though. If you go to class, participate, and do all the assignments you should be fine. The honors section is a great opportunity. Highly recommend this class!
Dr. Smith is an excellent professor who cares about his students and he is very enthusiastic about the biomedical sciences. The class is tough for being an intro level but I feel it provides a solid foundation for future classes in the sciences.
Dr. Smith is the nicest professor ever. He's a bit awkward, but also very approachable and he's always willing to help and answer questions, however sometimes when he tries to explain things it can be very confusing (he just has A LOT of knowledge) But if you do get him, you will definitely appreciate how well he treats his students.
Dr. Smith is an extremely dedicated professor; he is truly passionate about what he teaches as well as his students. He makes himself very available to seek help. The tests are challenging but he also gives out a lot of assignments that can make up for some of those lost points.
The BMS 110 honors course gives you a ton of hands on experience. If you aren't looking for a challenge don't take the class, however, I would suggest it! The lab is insanely interesting, though the reports and notebooks are less than appeasing.
Probably one of the worst lecture teachers I have had. His lectures are boring and they drag on forever. He goes into details about stuff he doesn't need to. The tests aren't that bad and there are quite a few ways to earn easy points. Not a super bad class, but really boring, and I like science.
Gives lots of help outside of class. Be warned, though, you will feel every hour and 15 minutes worth of that class
There is so much material for this class. Read the chapter before going to the lecture, do all the prelectures and quizzes and you'll be fine. He does lecture all class period but he needs to unless you want to teach yourself.
I liked this class because of the other students and the discussions that he lead. However, Dr. Smith was incredibly vague and took off little points without explanation.
very very hard class. should be taken as a class by itself or when you have a very light load. there are numerous study sessions to help prepare you. I felt like I was drowning and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't stay above ground.
This was one of the better classes I had. Dr. Smith really does care about his students. Almost every class involved discussion about our current topic, which I loved. He assigns a ton of papersprojects, and participation during class is required. The tests were easy. I would take another class with him.
Good professor, knows what he's talking about. If you have to take BMS, definitely take Dr. Smith.
If you have to take this class and you can get Smith, do it. The material is tough, but he makes every effort to make sure you understand it and gives you plenty of opportunities to pad your grade.
Was a great intro class to provide a good foundation. I will say that this class IS NOT easy. This is the most difficult class I have ever taken in my life. I'm usually really good at science but only pulled off a B in this class. That being said it was completely my fault. I didn't really study at all but if I had I would have got that A.
Dr. Smith is a great guy and really cares about his students. In this class he gave a lot of papers, projects, and a lot of class participation things. He did give us a great foundation for life at Missouri State. He gave us tips for just about everything we might need. I really want to take BMS with him! He can be funny at times as well!
Professor Smith is the best teacher I've ever had. I feel like I learned more in that class than any other science class. It is difficult but you can do it. If you are interested in a science career you HAVE to take this class with him. You won't regret it; the hard work prepares you for more challenging classes.
Dr. Smith is one of the nicest people ever, and he certainly knows the material. Class was all Powerpoint lectures, so extremely boring. Powerpoints weren't straightforward so I had to reteach myself a lot. He does give tons of opportunities for points to boost your grade, so just do all the homework and come to class and it isn't too hard.
He has participation points daily through clickers. His lectures will bore you to death because he talks in depth about every little thing. His tests come directly from the power-points. Overall, he is a good teacher, very knowledge and will help if you ask. He cares about how his students perform.
Dr. Smith really does care about what he is teaching. The problem is his lectures are incredible long, he has a monotone voice, does not do a good job keeping student interrested, he gets off track a lot, and he puts advanced level stuff on the test, but teaches the material at a basic level. Overall he is a great person, but not the best teacher.
Lectures are pretty long and boring, but you need to attend them for clicker points and possible pop quizzes. He gives a ton of participation points and there are a lot of opportunities for extra points. Class is overall pretty easy. The tests can be hard but you'll get extra points back and participation points to help boost your grade back up.
Terrible. Every exam covers probably 4-5 chapters, and he asks questions that involve minor details.
This class is definitely a challenge. Would not suggest it for anyone not considering a science/medical major. If you take diligent notes in class and study several days in advance, good grades are still obtainable. Sometimes it's challenging to figure out the most important things. Write down everything on the board and go to the study sessions.
For someone with very little lab experience, this class was HARD. You get to participate in original research, which is nice; however, more often than not, students were confused as to what the object of the lab was. Lab Notebooks and Lab Reports were tedious, time consuming, and generally, a challenge.
Smith was okay minus the fact that his exams are fairly hard! Got C's on all of them but was able to build up my points through the online quizzes and some homework assignments. He offers a little bit of extra credit towards the end. Lectures are super long but he provides study guides with each chapter which helps a ton. I ended up with a high B!
Smith always teaches right until the end of class, so don't expect to get out early, not even 30 seconds. He has a bit of a monotonous voice so I felt sleepy 45 minutes in. His tests were super hard, but even if you don't do well on them you can get a good grade if you do well on quizzes. I WOULD NOT take another one of his classes.
Ok, honestly if I studied more I could've done better. But this to me was still a hard class. The final isn't too bad because he uses all your past tests to make it. I was never able to go to a PASS session but they would've helped. But there is a lot of homework you need to stay on top of.
Dr Smith is incredibly enthusiastic about teaching and wants his students to succeed, but considering he mixes material from higher level classes it is a very hard class unless you are willing to study. A LOT.
Turns a 100 level course into that of 300 or above. He teaches honor classes so he tends to carry over the "expected" intelligence into his regular classes. During lecture he goes extremely deep into subjects, most of the time the stuff you don't even need to know until later classes. He continues to make questions that students failed in the past.
You either love him or you hate him. For me, I have been on the hate side. His lectures are long and extremely boring. He is very intelligent- to the point where he doesn't know how to dumb it down for an entry level class. He goes off on 30 minute tangents about material he tells us we won't be tested over. I've gotten D's on 2/3 of my tests. Run.
Hard teacher. Too smart for entry level classes, he just cannot dumb it down for students. Also have to show up to class.
Beware he exams very specific. You need a good science background, not an entry level course.
The GA had to jump in and correct him alot, more prople learned the concept in lab than the lecture
Smith is the best professor to take for BMS 110. Attendance isn't mandatory but you do get east clicker points and useful information. You do have to study hard for his tests but the studying will pay off. He gives back his tests for you to study for the final with.
Smith's lectures are too long and boring. His teaching tactics are tough for incoming freshman. I was very interested in the class before, but it was basically ruined for me. He's too smart and doesn't understand that we don't understand him.
He's a boring lecturer, but has fill in the blank powerpoints so it is easier to follow along. Basically everything that was on the PowerPoints is on the test. If you don't do very good on his tests, don't worry! He has LOTS of extra credit and easy homework assignments to bump your grade! Make sure to go to class because he does have pop quizzes.
Professor Smith is an awesome teacher. His class is pretty hard and you have to work to get through it, but an A is totally do-able if you come to class an study. Smith is probably the best science teacher I have ever had and gets you prepared for tests and future classes. I learned a ton in his class and highly recommend him.
Dr. Smith's honors Biomed class is extremely difficult and you should only take this course if you are ready to read and memorize. There is a lot of info to learn and it consumes much of your time. Exam questions are worded strangely and his exams have tough essay responses.
Professor Smith is a really good teacher to have. Class isn't difficult if you keep up to work. Find a group of friends to help do homework and quizzes with. Make sure you study for tests. Gives many chances for extra credit. Don't need to ready out of the book just need the access code.
This was not an easy class, but Dr Smith did everything in his power to help you be successful in his class, as well as prepare you for future science related classes. If you put in the work, and seek help if you need it, you should be able to get a decent grade.
He's a good professor, but reads from his slides. It's possible to get a good grade in his class if you work hard.
Professor Smith really cared about his students and their success. He instructs an honors class and just the regular BMS, so I feel like it was hard for him to make it easier for us to understand. He gives study guides for the tests but the tests are just completely different. There is plenty of room with homework and quizzes to make up bad tests.
His tests are long and conceptual study 12hrs before each one at least. He holds study sessions before each test, they are very helpful I recommend going. It's a tough class no matter your professor in my opinion he's the most accessible outside of class and gives a lot of extra credit and homework to help your grade.
Somewhat difficult class, pay attention in lecture! There are pop quizzes. Great teacher and knows his stuff. Go to test study sessions and you will do so much better on the tests! I did not open my lecture book but maybe twice, but you need the access code!
I have always enjoyed science, and I never did struggle with it.. Until this class. I, as a freshman, sat next to 2 juniors in college. One of which was on his third attempt taking the class, and the other on his second. Dr. Smith literally CAN NOT dumb it down. Far too intelligent for a 100 level class. Felt like a 300 level class. DO NOT TAKE.
Gives vague instructions. Material is too hard for it to be a 100 level class.
He contradicts himself constantly and is always off topic. Won't complete all the notes but will still test you over the material. He doesn't dumb down the information to make the material easier to understand. Would not recommend for a level 100 class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! Dr. Smith wastes a lot of class time by rambling through content that is not important. He falls weeks behind on the syllabus, but expects assignments to still be turned in, even if the material has not been covered yet. He does not dumb down any of the content either. This course is too hard to be an introduction course.
Not a fan of his lecture style, and his tests were difficult even if you completed the study guide and knew the lecture powerpoints.
Smart but not very clear with his teaching and has very boring lectures. Gives lots of notes and powerpoints which is good to study from.
Do not take this course with Dr. Smith. Dr. Smith's lab is a joke. None of the lab material has anything to do with the lecture material. The entire semester of the lab is dedicated to learning about Dr. Smith's research. If you want to learn about human biology, do not take this course with Dr. Smith or take a biology class.
Dr. Smith is one of my favorite professors so far at Missouri State. He genuinely cares about students and is willing to help those who are struggling. He uses PowerPoint to give lectures, and the information on the Power Points is on the exams. He also gives helpful study guides before each exam and gives extra credit.
Dr. Smith is by far the best professor I've had thus far at MSU! His lectures are sometimes a little tough to understand, but if you email him or go to his office hours he is more than happy to help! He hosts multiple study sessions before EVERY exam and also discusses the most missed material after exams. Quick to respond to emails too!
nice guy and helpful, but his lectures are so incredibly boring it kills me. One pop quiz every unit, attendance taken every day through clicker questions, lots of homework and quizzes on blackboard which are pretty difficult. 4 tests and they're pretty challenging as well. He does review before every test though and is a nice guy - lots of bonus!
Really smart guy. Loved his class, but the tests are difficult. I never failed any but I sure did come close, and had Mostly C's. There's a lot of assignments and quizzes to do online with really weird due dates which is why I got a C+ instead of a B. When the hw or quiz closes, it's closed. Take notes on the powerpoints, we never used the book.
Very difficult. However, if you're super interested in medicine or research, his lecture and lab are for you. If you have plenty of time outside of lecture periods, you'll do good. Super difficult if you have a job or extracurricular, though. Things go over our heads a lot, but if you ask one-on-one questions you get better explanations.
A lot of homework involved, all due at random times, 4pm, 6pm, midnight. I never could keep them straight and that's what caused me such a low grade. They're worth 10-20 points each and aren't easy. His tests are difficult. Find someone who's previously taken the class & ask for their old tests to study from. He gets really behind in his lecture.
Easy class if you work for it. A lot of homework and quizzes are offered which can be an easy 10-20 points as long as you do them. These assignments are beneficial if you don't do well on the test. He holds a lot of study sessions, and wants to see his students succeed.
Dr. Smith is an amazing professor. He's very personable and approachable, but still knowledgeable on the subject. I stayed after class most days to ask questions and he was always willing to stay and chat with me. The class was challenging for most students, it helps to have a strong background in biomedical science before going into it.
Dr. Smith is a great professor who is very helpful if you take the time to understand the subject and ask questions. He wants to help him students to succeed so take advantage of that. You must to go to class because the lectures are extremely important is being able to understand the topics. Extra credit opportunities are offered so do them!
Professor Smith is an amazing teacher! He explains content and is super passionate about content. This class is hard , involves lots of reading, but the teacher makes it bearable. Wouldn't want another teacher for BMS 110!
Dr. Smith is one of the few teachers that has ever made a difference in my college education. He is so passionate, knowledgeable, funny, and teaches in a way that you learn the information without realizing you are learning it. His classes are definitely hard and require a lot of work, but I would take any class with him as a teacher.
Dr. Smith is a great professor! He genuinely cares about his students. Although he is super busy, he will make time to meet with you for anything. BMS 110 is a very difficult course, but he makes is the best that he can. There are 4 exams, a comprehensive final, pop quizzes, online quizzes and homework. He did offer an extra credit assignment.
Great person! Super understanding about if you can't get something finished or if you need help with a topic. However, sometimes he doesn't explain things very well.
He's a great teacher who truly cares about his students and making sure they understand each topic. The only problem is he takes too long with some lectures, and then puts up video lectures that we must watch and take note from which only happens later in the semester. His lectures are full of good information and I'd write everything he says down!
Professor Smith is a very lovable teacher and definitely knows how to teach. Super supportive and understanding. Don't bother going to his exam reviews, they don't help. BMS is a very difficult class, he makes it fun, but not easier. My class never averaged past a 71% on the exams, so he is a tough professor, but a good one nonetheless.
Don't take UHC with him; this semester was all over the place, didn't follow the schedule, compared to other UHC classes, graded harshly and a lot of DIFFICULT busy work (research papers and a book journal) that we didn't even reflect on in class--just one-and-done stuff; took FOREVER to grade; unnecessarily tough on participation; hard to get an A
Dr. Smith is a smart and nice guy but did a horrible job teaching this class. He has too many projects and positions to do a good job. Grading took months and was harsh/unclear. A lot of difficult busy work for really no reason it seemed like. Class time was a waste of tangent after tangent never talking about upcoming tests or assignments.
He's a nice guy who cares for his students and is very enthusiastic about BMS, but the class was difficult. The lecture wasn't bad until the tests came around. He held study sessions but many left feeling more confused. The lab is very difficult and hard to understand the purpose of the research and your own gene. He gets behind in lecture and lab.
Best BMS prof out there. Tests are exactly like pwrpoints. Gives points back on tests. Holds his own study sessions. Gives you hints about when next pop quiz will be. Yes hes busy, but never let that affect our class time. I recommend recording lectures & pass. Drops worst quiz grade and tons of extra credit. Ended up with over a 100% in the class
I took the Honors section of BMS 110 (and 111) with Dr. Smith. He's a very nice professor and knows what he's talking about. The problem was that he was so incredibly intelligent that he didn't know how to teach the information at an introductory level, as he also teaches higher level courses. You'll have to study very hard to get an A.
Dr. Smith is a very intelligent professor, but does not explain things at an introductory level. The BMS 111 lab (honors) was the hardest class I've ever taken. It feels as though it is an upper level course and the material is difficult to understand. The labs are confusing and you'll need to know what you're doing for the project at the end.
Dr. Smith means well, but doesn't do a very good job of clearly explaining. He didn't discuss assignments, and kinda left his students to figure it out on their own. Takes forever to grade, and most of class is discussion over the class' common reader. Class time doesn't seem to have much purpose but participation matters so you have to attend.
good guy but hard class
Mr. Smith was a great professor and really cared about his students and their grades. His class is very lecture heavy but most tests are available on quizlet to study. The quizzes and homework requires work outside of class but isn't terrible compared to other classes. I would 100% recommend him over any other BMS teacher.
He's a great person who cares for his students. He's very detailed in his lecture. There are quizzes for every chapter, quizzes on the online textbook (easy points), homework assignments (they help), points for attendance& pop quiz points s. all the test questions are from the powerpoint slides not the book. he holds study sessions that help too.
He gives out a lot of online homework assignments and quizzes that are not easy but with effort they help boost your grade. Tests require a lot of study, cramming the night before will not do unless that is your thing. He holds study sessions that help a little. He sometimes goes off on tangents about unnecessary information which is distracting.
I changed my major and had to take BMS 110 for it, I was so scared that I almost didnt change my major. Dr. Smith is literally the best professor, BMS is obviously a challenging class as it is for medical professionals but he is the reason I got an A! His tests are straight forward, quizzes online are easy, and he tells you when the pop quizzes ar
Dr. Smith is a good person, but his lectures can be very long and boring at times. He definitely knows what he is talking about and will answer any questions. He offers lots of extra credit that in the end can take you up a letter grade. You have to study the powerpoints very hard. I did not find the textbook useful, just study the slides.
Dr. Smith is the best instructor at MSU.
I had Dr. Smith for BMS 110 and enjoyed the class, so I took BMS497 this semester, as he had suggested. He is very busy outside of the classroom, and this shows in his lectures as he is very tired, repeats himself a lot, and does not remember you. BMS 497 is a new class, but it did not help prepare me for research very well. Either way, an easy A.
He's really smart and a great guy, but if you want an easy UHC class don't take him. He likes to take off like .25 points on every assignment if anything is slightly off. It's not a hard class just kinda a lot of work for a freshman seminar class. And he talks a lot. Like a lot. But super nice guy and knows a lot about biology!
I was in the honors BMS lab/lecture this semester & it was overwhelming. It's a ton of work & he grades pretty harsh. This class was 90% of the time I spent on homework/ studying. It seems better if you take non-honors, so if I were to redo the class I would go that route. I highly caution against taking this class, especially if you procrastinate
I couldn't stay awake during his lectures. If you don't learn by ear don't take any class with him. He always goes on tangents and makes learning new material confusing. This made his tests impossible for me, and it seems like he tested on things we didn't learn. It's probably just my learning style that doesn't mesh well, but so glad I'm done.
Dr. Smith was a great professor for BMS 540. He is funny, respectful, and knowledgeable about the material. The final exam is worth a large portion of your grade, but if you study previous quizzes you will do well.
Prof. Smith jumps around in his BMS 111 class. He has taught me random things during the long fast, fast, fast, lectures. He has given his attention to only one person in the class. I asked for help on a homework assignment, and he literally told me TO READ THE DIRECTIONS. he doesn't know who you are, nor does he care who you are.
I thought being a level 100 class that it wouldnt be as difficult as it is but I was very wrong. Smith does not take time to explain big concepts in class and if he does explain something, its something hes interested in or its a picture from a random textbook that you wont see again. Do not take BMS 110 with him!!
Look, as a person, Smith is fine. As a professor, he is one of the worst. He gets behind on material and then expects you to read ahead 3 chapters for homework and then won't touch on that subject until the next exam. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!!
Sweetest guy and a really great professor! I would take every class with him if I could
Dr. Smith is knowledgeable on the material and really cares for his students.
Dr. Smith is too busy outside of class. He did not grade ANY of our coursework until the last week, all his lectures are pre-recorded, and we only came to class for tests/quizzes. He reads directly off the slides, he mispronounces the drug names, and his grammar is terrible. Exams are simple and all multiple choice - you just need to memorize it.
Very difficult for a "how to college class". Required many assignments and tough papers compared to all other UHCs. Is quoted as saying "I won't give an A unless someone does something as good or better than I can do it". Lectures were very difficult to understand, as he would go on tangents and abandon sentences midway through the sentence.
This is by far one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. Professor Smith never explains assignments in a clear and thorough manner, nor does he give out anything reminiscent of a grading rubric. You will have more writing assignments than you ever expected, and they will be graded to an insane degree that is never explained.
He was honestly rude to me for no reason. Everyone in this class I talked to felt like we all struggled to get an A because he graded so harsh. He also grades for participation and attendance which got annoying really fast. His tests were kinds difficult and he also just rambled about random things. Overall I did not enjoy him in this class
This class was way too difficult for a first year seminar. It was probably one of the hardest classes I had ever taken. There were way too many papers and participation/attendance were required. Harshly grades and there weren't great guidelines. He rambled a lot and would stop in the middle of sentences. I would not take this class again.
This class was way too difficult for a UHC course. I said all semester how I was gonna flame him on rate my professor. He graded way too hard with little to no guidelines. The papers have almost no significance to the course. The final and midterm were near impossible. I would not take him again.
I've talked to other students in different UHC110 classes and they all seem much better than Dr. Smith's class. Makes you read and journal a book throughout the semester. Multiple essays. Must go to places around Springfield outside of class time in order to do assignments. Tough grader. His class is more work than my real classes. Do not take.
This professor is extremely rude. He does not care about the students at all. I am not sure how he has so many ratings but trust me you never want to have him. He is difficult to talk to and will not help you.
Awful
This class is not difficult. Points are participation, online quizzes, (very long) lab notebooks, exams, & practicals. Lectures are rather boring & hard to pay attention to. It is painful to listen to the professor try to pronounce things. I did enjoy the class as the professor & the lab professor were both very passionate about microbiology.
Professor Smith's UHC110 class is notoriously challenging, with heavy workloads and tough grading. While it provides valuable learning, the class demands a significant time commitment. Using resources like Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook can help navigate the workload.
Dr. Smith is very knowledgeable on the course material. The lectures are not very engaging, but he is genuinely kind. The tests are very similar to the quizzes, so the tests are easy to study for. The lab is a big time commitment, but it's not terribly difficult. This class is probably one of the easier BMS electives and relevant to medicine.
Dr. Smith is a great professor and 317 is a pretty simple class. The exams are questions mostly taken from the quizzes so make sure to heavily study those. The lab Is pretty intensive and the journals area. bit tedious. Each exam lab and lecture gets points added back and the lecture exams have extra credit questions. Very useful class as well.
For a freshman seminar class, I feel as though the workload is completely out of place. There is just a plethora of busy work and assignments that took away time from more important classes. Multiple papers and group projects and difficult tests. He is a caring teacher, don't get me wrong, but just spare yourself and take a different UHC.
Gives out a rubric but grades subjectively. He expects a massive amount of work for a seminar class. In the last two weeks he gave out 3 essays, 2 presentations and one report where I had to actually visit a volunteer center. The gold standard for the reading assignment is 3 pages of journal entry per chapter. I got an A+ in Calc 2 but a B- here.
Dr. Smith is NOT an easy professor, but he cares deeply for his students & for this course. He puts his everything into the class, & expects you to do the same. This is not an easy class, but you will come out of it with a deep knowledge & respect for the subject. If you need him, he is easily accessible. Overall a great professor & amazing class.
He is a great teacher and you can tell he cares about the subject. Material can be challenging at times but is approachable if need help.
Lectures/course material were super insightful and interesting, so take if the workload isn't a bother. The professor was very knowledgeable and friendly. Honors course, so more work, though a tad too much. Assignments were fine but lengthy, and instructions were vague, so you never quite knew what was going on. Subjective grading.
