(Intro to Philosophy)The homework was easy, but I don't think it was at all possible to get an A on the one paper you have to write. Be expected to know who wrote all the essays you have to read and what they said. He had a more than obvious bias, which got really annoying. He was nice and explained things well, but don't expect an A.
I took his class for concurrent high school enrollment and loved it. Getting an A isn't impossible, but you must work, and above all else, think. Having prior interest also helps. If you're looking for an easy filler class, find something else. If you want to be challenged, Josh is a great guy, regardless of how much you might disagree with him.
Josh is such a cool teacher i would definatley take his class again, he valued students opinions and made his class fun, which was a suprise to me. The hwk are easy and he gives u a study guide for the exams, i never studied and had a chance at an A, if ur interested in philosophy this class is a must, seriously. remeber decartes is a rationalist
The class was awesome!!!
The class was great. Josh made it really interesting.
He has a gift for explaining things. I wish all my teachers were this clear and helpful. You will definately have to work to make an A, but it's doable. He makes the subject a lot more enjoyable than you would expect it to be. I would highly recommend him.
Very difficult class, but Josh is an Amazing instructor, and wicked smart. You will have to attend class reguarly or you'll be lost. His tests are hard, and theres alot of homework, but thats so you can get a better grade. I loved the class though and I learned so much.
Josh is a great teacher. Apply yourself, think, and you'll do well. He'll guide you to think about things in a totally different way. His class is a must for anyone wanting to expand his or her mind.
hard class(LOGIC) but with concentration and good attendance passing is not hard. skips chapters, do your homework(help understand the content), very helpful in class. Might take long to understand him, sounds strict but he is not. His comments might hurt. Good class to try if you have to.
Josh is an excellent instructor! I would definitley recommend him. His tests are kinda hard, but he explains the material so that you understand it. Very Fun class, I learned a lot even though I didnt understand some things. He's a very helpful and down-to-earth guy. I enjoyed this class, and take this class if you want to learn. Very interesting.
Please do not take him if u have no interest in philosophy. These other people's opinions will stir u wrong if u take him. He is DEFINITELY not an easy professor! Tests are too hard. Answers ur questions with a question so he's not very helpful. He has too many mood swings so u never know when to joke with him. I did not enjoy this class at all.
I felt I deserved better than a C in his class. I liked him as a person, though.
Honestly, he's a good teacher, although he is not good enough. The highest anyone has ever made on his Phil 1113 midterm was a 94, that's unacceptable. He explains things moderately well and he would stay after class to help you, but his tests are too hard and the books are sometimes incomprehensible. I'm a 4.0 student and he destroyed that with a
I learned SO much. And he's not as arrogant and in your face as some of the other professors. But he does still make you participate in all kinds of discussions, whether you like it or not. A great teacher. And one of the only philosophy teachers who teaches with no bias or slant. You work hard, but it's worth it.
Josh is so awesome! I never lost interest once in his class. He is very intelligent and really knows how to make you think about things differently. He's funny and really understanding. He gives an easy quiz every Friday. If you go to class and read your book you'll easily make and A in this class.
Master Spear's class is by far the best class I have ever taken. I would take this class not only for your university core but for your own sake. Spear's class challenges you to think outside the box about issues, beliefs, and knowledge. Although one thing, sometimes he answers your questions with questions, or diverts the question to the class.
Really good professor for philosophy you have a quiz every friday over what you were supposed to read. Master Spears is what you must call him and Master Spears RULES!!!!
This is by far the best and most interesting class I've taken in college. Master Spears presents everything in a way that makes you think, but at the same time does a great job explaining it. This is one class I enjoyed going to every day. The tests aren't easy by any means, but if you read and come to class, you'll do fine.
Great
Mr. Spears is a great teacher.I never wanted to miss his class because the classes were really interesting. If you read and come to class everyday, it's not hard to get an A in this class.
Interesting class consists of alot of reading a few quizzes and a paper. Test require knowledge of the material. The professor is really cool
a great teacher and a fun class. would recommend to ANYONE
Best class ever!!!
You will love this class. He will make you really think. A mid-term and a final, which are easy if you read the book and paid attention. A short, easy quiz every Friday over the readings. One paper due at end of semester. The book is difficult to understand so go to class and ask questions, that's what fuels the discussions.
I took his class last year and was disappointed all around. I received my first D of my college career, even though I put forth a lot of effort and spent hours on every paper he assigned. The tests were ridiculous. He's a nice, well-rounded guy but don't take this class expecting to get an A or even a B.
Pretty cool professor. I thought I would hate Philosophy but I quite enjoyed his class. He makes it fun. There are two "Quizzams", he takes the better one of the two, Midterm, Big Paper, and the Final. He does homework as well. He likes to make references to Phineas and Ferb... A LOT. I honestly don't think he is hard at all. Just a bunch of work.
Awesome class, great professor. Lots of homework, but usually can be completed in 30 minutes to 1 hour. The most difficult part of the class is the 750-1000 word paper, but overall its not that bad if you stay on top of things. Come to class not only for the material, but for some really interesting and thought provoking discussion!
Nothing worth taking sufficient notes over in class. Doesn't grade your homework very well. Takes forever to grade your tests, homework, etc. Arrogant. Was not worth the money.
Lectures were fairly interesting, however notes from the lectures, book, or otherwise will not help you to prepare for tests. He is very inconsistent as far as what he tells you to study for tests. Also don't bother trying to get in touch with him because he doesn't respond to emails.
Came into this class very interested in Philosophy. Lots of homework, which I didn't mind. Study guides didn't help much for the tests, neither did notes. He won't slow down and repeat something if you ask him to. I was disappointed with this class.
GOOD TEACHER. makes things easy to understand. takes time explaining. lectures are always interesting. does alot of group work and class interactions. the homework is mild but its online and based on your learning. does quizes every friday and your overall grade isnt dependant on your test grade. tests arent too horrible either.
This class might have been much more difficult if I hadn't had Josh as an instructor for it. He explains everything on the board & makes sure you understand the material before movig on. He gives a quiz every Friday & 5 exams. Attendance is not mandatory, but greatly helps with understanding the material. I highly recommend taking his classes!!!
funny and sarcastic
Josh is my favorite teacher ever. The class is pretty hard but he teaches it well. If you don't understand something he'll spend time with you until you do. Calls everyone by name and super funny. tests are pretty hard but if you study you'll do fine. Take him! Only class i actually liked going to.
Amazing Teacher! He helps you understand what is going on. He cares about each student and takes the time to listen to your concerns! The class is kinda hard but he makes it fun and more clear Take him!
Great class. Make sure and read the books and do the assignments. Also, pay attention in class and make sure you understand as you go. I loved this class. :)
Great prof, enjoyed class discussions. Doesn't require attendance, but if you don't show up you'll miss something!
I am surprised he has such a high rating on here! YES, his lectures are entertaining, and he is funny but none of THAT will help you on his CRAZY tests. The assigned reading and his lectures do not prepare you for his test. I have over 100hrs and 3.96 GPA, and I had to drop because I had a C in his class. I have never had to drop anything EVER!
Favorite professor I've ever had. I loved going to class, and I miss going now. He loves teaching and helping people understand his curriculum (which I found really interesting). He is genuinely kind and he teaches for the benefit of his students. His is not a blow off class; don't go in expecting not to work, and don't be surprised when he uses big words. It's not an easy class, but every minute of it is worthwhile. Go to class, do your homework, study, and you'll make a good grade.
A very chrming man. He is wisdom and humerous. Very kind and helpful. Beat teacher ever!
great professor and great guy. Extremely helpful and always willing to listen. be warned if you don't know what you believe he will make you question it.
He is a great person. Not really a great professor. Test and "quizams" are extremely difficult. He is "cool" but will have no mercy on you with grading, even if its your belief. You pretty much learn his way or the highway. I would recommend someone else is you want an A or B.
Great guy, Great professor. He's funny, very interested in his subject and makes you enjoy philosophy. His class was challenging, but not impossible. If you do the readings, come to class and talk about it with others, you will do just fine. He will know your name and ask you questions in class. So be prepared. one of my favorite classes so far.
I loved this class! Best professor I've ever had. Attendance is not mandatory BUT if you miss it is extremely hard to catch up. Take this class!!!!!!!!!
I do not suggest this class. I am a 4.0 student and love to learn, but this class put me to sleep and I got a C, undeservingly.
I look forward to class every week. It is very engaging. As long as you engage in class, do the homework, and read, you won't have to do too much studying aside for his tests. Just do the work and pay attention! He is hilarious and extremely helpful. Take this class!!!
Take this class! It is fun, interesting, and engaging. Spears is hilarious and really thorough to make sure everyone understands. I look forward to this class every week. As long as you pay attention, engage in class, do the homeworks, and read, you will do well. Just do the work! He's the best professor I've had so far. You won't be disappointed.
I've taken both his Logic and Intro to Philosophy courses, and they were my favorite classes hands down. He is funny and engaging, and he cares about his students. He will do everything he can to help you do well, but you will have to work for it. My favorite professor here; my friends who have taken him agree.
This class was easily one of my favorites this semester!! The professor is so engaging and an overall nice guy who seems to really want to help his students succeed, though often acknowledging the pointlessness of an 'A'. Highly recommended!!
This professor is a really genuine and smart man. I recommend him to everyone! The class isn't the easiest but he will help you and no matter what and know you by name quick! He really wants you to understand the material.
This was a great class, fun to participate in. You do have to read, study and do the homework, but it's worth it. The material is not always easy to understand, but he will explain it, and you'll need that for the tests. Be active, participate, get to know the other class members, and you will enjoy it immensely.
His class was awesome. I only made C, but could have done better if I had applied more time to the homework. He uses life/family stories to explain the material which was often quite humorous. Very laid back and made lots of jokes. Genuinely loves teaching.
The material ranged from interesting to weird and easy to difficult. I'm an average student and I had to work hard to get a B. I enjoyed the class discussions and the people. Josh was interesting, even hilarious so the class was never boring. We had a great class full of talkative people, and that made the 2 hrs and 45 minutes go by pretty quickly.
he is a funny guy, but is not a good teacher. his test are impossible to pass. do not take this teacher. homework is difficult and he has no idea how to work d2l making it impossible to know what your grade in the class is. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
Josh is a nice, funny, and an all around great guy. He did a great job of making a boring subject engaging. However, HEED MY WARNING! Do not take him if you want an A. His tests are very difficult and his whole grade opportunities are applied very rigidly. He lured me into a false sense of security and on the first test I got a C. A's after; Bfinal
Spears is passionate not only about his students' performance in the subject, but about students' views in life. He makes a gen ed course applicable and interesting to any non-major. Also, super friendly and readily available for office hours. The work isn't hard if you keep up, but he'll help you if you need it!
Josh is so great. I would recommend this class to anyone taking philosophy. Although it is a difficult course that makes you think josh makes it enjoyable every day
I had to retake Intro to Philosophy due to my credit transfers, so I was expecting the same old thing. Wrong. He teaches this class in a unique, clear, concise, worldview-centric way, which makes it accessible to PHIL majors or otherwise. Discussion based, easy grader. I took it in the summer, which I DEFINITELY suggest. Buy the books (cheap).
The CLASS was great. His lectures are very helpful and really make you feel like you understand the material. His TESTS are very difficult. In class, he gives a lot of small, easy examples on how to do the work and then on the test, it will be like the hardest question he could find. Make sure you read carefully!! He counts off for any mistakes.
He is great and is there to help you. Always ask questions. He is hilarious! Tests can be difficult, but if you study, do all the homework (multiple times), and pay attention in class then you will pass.
I took introduction to philosophy with spears and I really loved the class! the reading is interesting and the class discussions really make you think. He is very personable and i would take it again. Dont bother trying to cheat. Just take notes and do the readings.
He is really funny. I recommend you take the time to read all of the instructions in the tests because its funny and eases anxiety. DO NOT FORGET TO DO YOUR LOGICOLA! He makes writing notes really easy and you should write them word for word.
He seems super cool and chill at first, but do not be fooled he's a smart ass and plays favorites. Hard subject good teacher.
Josh is great! You will have to buy the books, read said books, and come to class. If you do all of these things you will be fine. If you don't you will fail. I took the class over the summer and found it was a lot easier to remember everything. I'm not great at logic either and he made it easier for me.
He's really chill. Cool guy. Just don't miss any of his classes or your going to be confused as hell. usually gives you 2 homework assignments per class if you have him one time a week. to do really well in his class, think about going to a tutor if you don't understand.
Josh is awesome. If you have to take Phil 1113, take it with him. You do not have to come to class, but just know you will be behind if you don't. His homeworks are easy, and his tests a little hard. Getting an A is totally possible. Plus, he is stinking hilarious and makes the class so fun. Could be a controversial class, but he is really fair.
The students on here who disliked Dr. Spears are most likely sensitive hipsters who have no critical thinking skills. If you want an easy fill in the blank, memorize facts class don't take his class. If you want meaningful class discussions and a professor that cares about his students, take this class. By far one of the best professors I've seen.
Lots of questions and participation! Very funny and challenging, makes you think a lot. Don't take his night class because you'll have a headache thirty minutes in.
Josh is an awesome teacher. Intro to Phil is not so awesome. No matter how much you don't think its relevant, show up to class. The lectures are important. Do the study guides and make sure you understand them. If you don't, go to class and ask! He will gladly try to help you understand the material.
Josh was a great professor! If you're worried about a philosophy class being too religious or too not religious, he does a really good job at making sure everyone feels accepted for their worldviews. He cares much more about your education than just the information on the test. Take him, you won't regret it. He's very funny and laid back.
We were told we could receive feedback on our papers. I never once was given anything helpful. Our papers were supposed to be our point of view, but then he would count us off for being "incorrect". The study guides did not match up with tests, either. Everyone was mad after exams. Hes funny, but that's about it.
I really enjoyed having Josh as my professor. He's super funny and never acts biased in the slightest. It's impressive how well he can play Devil's advocate for any viewpoint!! He assigns homework, but it wasn't hard. Overall, he is a caring, fun teacher. If you're struggling or going through problems in life, he's very caring and is there for you.
Professor Josh has been my favorite Professor thus far. He encourages real learning and frowns upon just studying for a test. He wants his students to actually gain an understanding of both sides of any argument. If you have never questioned your beliefs before, get ready for a roller coaster ride.
hilarious and overall great teacher, sometimes difficult with lectures they tend to go on forever with more conversations. made class funny with it being 3 hours
Although he's a fun guy, that does not automatically make him a great professor. He doesn't put grades in the gradebook all semester, leaving you to stress about what you really have in the class. He is also very inconsistent about his requirements and often takes more than a day to email you back. Good guy, could be a better teacher.
dude was stupid chill. learned a lot about myself. definitely tell him about all your conspiracy theories hell love that.
Spears is my favorite. teacher. ever. He is engaging, funny, and I have learned so much from his class. He teaches you so much about yourself and if you have a question about anything he will help you figure it out (or loan you a book to help you figure it out).
Josh did a fantastic job! Logic and critical thinking took me outside of my comfort zone and challenged me more than any other class. You have to read what he posts online, do the study guide, and study for the quizzams. If you put in the effort and work, you will do fine. Josh is a great character and hes hilarious. 20/10 recommend!
Spears is the best prof ever. Super nice guy, great/interesting class. He's smart and hilarious.
This professor will rearrange your brains with logic. Amazing! I had a headache after each class. The first part of the semester is super fun, the last - bit tough but doable. Take the logic class and your worldview will change in a positive way. Read and print his papers. Take pictures of the board to study.
Very difficult to communicate as he does not respond to emails. Changes the schedule often and does not update grades all semester. D2L was never accurate with due dates or grades, do not recommend.
His teaching style is extremely confusing, in this class there is a specific way to think and it hurts your head. I do not recommend it. Trust me at first it's alright, but later on the assignments start to look like gibberish and math, but there's no math involved. Good luck...
He doesn't really respond to emails. He's kind, just confusing. A lot of this stuff does not make any sense.
I don't recommend this class. The professor is okay. His teaching style can be confusing and he takes a while to respond to emails. He doesn't really use D2L except for assignments so if you need to know your grade you will need to email him. The assignments can be time consuming as there is a lot of reading to do.
