Easy A. If all you care about is getting an A, going to class is pointless. But, she has very interesting class discussions.
I was the type of student that did not like to speak in class meaning it is easier for me to take things in than to speak upon them. I attended just about every class did extra credit and still didn't receive an A. If you don't talk in her class you won't be considered her favorite and you will not get an A. Personally I didn't like her.
Super easy class. Even easier A
Wow I loved this class. Dr. McCalester is so funny and I looked forward to coming to class everyday. The lectures are interesting and it's not really hard to pass if you come to class or at the very least read the textbook. She is very understanding and will work with you if you are having any trouble.
I absolutely love Ms. McCalester!! I learned a lot from her! I had her for Introduction to Political Science. It is best for you to read whatever she assigns. But, she is more than detailed when it comes to explaining a topic or situation that someone might find to be confusing. I recommend for students to take her class.
If you dont take Dr. Mac you have played yourself. This is the best professor youre going to get. The class is not at all hard tests be online, unlimited extra credit, class lectures be about social issues going on in the world, you really leave there everyday with a broader understanding of the world
De. Mac is not only one of the most beneficial professors I have had, but also an overall mentor. She truly cares about any student that reaches out to her. PARTICIPATION IS KEY. Speak up and show up (most of the time) and she will help you in any way possible. An informative class that won't overload you.
Lectures were 90% current events and 10% information from the textbook. Attendance was not mandatory and all tests and quizzes were given through Blackboard. Fun professor though.
One of the best professors I've had. Class should be an easy A.
Dr. Mac is one of the best professor at Howard. If you see her for a class, take it. She is like our mom on campus. She is going to make you work for your grade, but it makes you better in the end. Her lectures are amazing! She breaks it down for us to understand. All of our assignments were papers, but she has unlimited extra credit.
Unlimited extra credit. All exams & quizzes on Blackboard. Attendance isn't mandatory, but her lectures are interesting. However, she can have an attitude if you run into a problem throughout the semester. Make sure you come to her with your receipts because she will try to question you. Makes a lot of jokes- dry humor not too funny. Easy A class.
Dr. Mac is a great professor. All the assignments we have, she gives a clear grading criteria. There aren't many assignments but there are about three big ones. This class by all means isn't hard but you have to work for your grade. If Dr. Mac sees that you're just throwing stuff together and not actually trying, she will notice.
Live Blackboard Collaborate calls, nothing pre-recorded. Doesn't post notes; so make sure you take notes during lecture. Honestly rely on groupme for notes missed. Attendance is apart of your grade. Podcast discussion due every Sunday. Only a few quizzes. Lectures aren't boring & neither are the podcasts.
Let me start by saying, I LOVE Dr. Mac. She is funny, relatable, and passionate about her students. She lectures and answers questions very well. You do need a book, but she gave it to us. She gives one short and easy hw assignment every week, but as long as you do it, it'll be a 10/10. Tests aren't too bad, just make sure you know the terms.
Dr Mac is a great professor. She taught us many skills outside of Poli Sci. She allowed us to have Friday's off and her lectures were fun. She's like the auntie you can drink around. The course wasn't difficult. Make a group chat and study with your class.
Dr. Mac is great! She breaks everything down so that it's easily understandable. She can get distracted pretty easily though, but she makes up for it because you're still learning a lot. The only hw is listening to podcasts and reading. There's only like 4 quizzes a semester. If you read and go to her lectures then you'll do fine. 10/10
I thought this would be an Easy A but she is way too particular and almost impossible in her grading of writing assignments. She does explain the material better than any other professor I've had though. She's really caring and gives good study tips and life tips. Great person, hard grader.
Dr. Mac's lectures are extremely informative, and after taking her class, you will become a new person. The readings aren't that long, but if you don't go to class, you won't get an in-depth analysis of what you read. Overall a great person and the best teacher I've had so far. She really wants you to succeed.
Dr. Mac is such a fun and amazing professor!! She provided me with a lot of knowledge on the subject, as well as many other things that I will use outside of class. She can go off topic sometimes, but her lectures are awesome. Shes also so funny. The course is just podcasts due every week and 4 quizzes, plus the midterm and final. Easy A!
I've never been quite interested in political science, but since taking this class my entire perspective has changed. She assigns weekly podcasts to listen to and they are extremely interesting and are the reason why I'm now into listening to podcasts. She is very passionate about the subject and it shows. A wonderful professor and enjoyable class.
Avoid her class, just avoid it. Shes literally the worst professor, I dont know what the other reviews are talking about.
If I could go back and avoid this class I would.
Just dont take this class. Save yourself
She is super personal and builds a relationship with her students
Easy A everything on google, only 10q quiz & podcast every week. She is passive-aggressive and class time was spent talking about freshman advice. We were very behind bc of this. Attendance mandatory, I just muted the lecture so I wouldn't have to listen to her hostility. If you don't mind her attitude this is an easy A
In the beginning it seems alright, but once you get your grades back, it's a whole different story. Her grading system (SafeAssign) is broken, has an attitude, and insults her students' intelligence. Consequently, many freshmen get a bad taste of Howard University right from jump if they take her. The worst professor I ever had. DO NOT take her.
She was always unclear on what she wanted for assignments so we'd have to redo them. She also lectures for awhile going off on a tangent and she never listened to student concerns. Lastly, she treats her students like they are dumber than her. The class itself is an easy A but its almost not worth it to have to deal with her condescending attitude.
Afro American studies should not be this hard to pass, let alone enjoy. The content was not hard, but she was, because nothing pleased her. She gave directions, and even when you followed them, you were still wrong. She was contradicting and condescending. Your grade is in God's hands.
Professor McCalester often devalues us as students. As a student, she often talks about her younger days per se "how dumb" she was, and that we are living in that same timeframe. Her actual work and the class are very easy and straightforward, but she does make you feel invaluable. She is on average responsive on her emails and office hours.
To begin, her lectures are literally about nothing. She spends at least 30 minutes discussing the school or something hbcu related instead of actually teaching content. She will save the content for the last 20 minutes of class. Also she's disrespectful towards her students, condescending, and you can tell she has an attitude problem
Don't take this class, take any other Afro American teacher. She's so specific on the safe assign score. No other professor acts the way she does. It's impossible to not get over a 25% if we're all answering the same exact questions from the same sources. I despised this class so much because of what she put us all through.
Do NOT take her class. You will be stressed out and will do a lot of work that you might not even get credit for. She places a high value on safe assign scores and will give you an automatic 0 if it is over 25%, despite the fact that she expects us all to answer the same exact questions about the same exact text.
Don't take this class, take any other Afro professor. No other professor acts the way she does. She places a high value on safe assign scores and will give you an automatic 0 if it is over 25%. She also deletes the class off blackboard right when she puts final grades on bisonweb so you cant see what you scored on assignments.
Theres days where she just complains and talks about literally nothing all class. If you ask a question that can be answered by the syllabus she will refuse to answer it. She is condescending and tends to have an attitude that is truly unnecessary and does not add anything positive to the class room environment.
She's not the best professor when it comes to her attitude and she can pretty rude to be honest. However, she's an easy grader and I've never gotten a bad grade so it's a trade off. Easy A if you do the work so I'd take it again but don't take this class if you take everything personally.
Honestly, this is a solid class. Not too many assignments and she's an easy grader. Attendance is mandatory and she is quick to mark off points if you don't come to class so you really need to show up. Weekly podcast assignments which are really informative and quizzes and tests are normal, however not hard at all.
EASY EASY A! This class consists of you showing up to zoom every MWF (Which is mandatory), and letting her lecture the class. Take notes no matter what. It will help for your tests and quizzes. Podcast discussion posts were due once a week. They were interesting and 10/10 as long as you did the work. She can be patronizing but it's worth the A!
She is a great professor who is very organized and straight forward. She knows exactly what she wants when she wants it. As long as you can follow directions, do your work, and come to class you will get an easy A.
At first, the class was easy with podcasts each week. Towards the end, two things equal 60% of your overall grade. She gives contradicting instructions at times, and rambles for much of lecture. Attendance matters, and deadlines are very strict. She deletes the class before putting in grades. Extra credit is unlimited, so you can do well.
In this course, we only had discussion posts, a bibliography, and an outline to do. She did NOT explain those assignments well, to the point where she had to give us another chance to submit it because we all didnt do well the first time. Its also annoying that she doesnt show the final grade until theyre in bisonweb. All in all, shes okay tho
wasn't a TERRIBLE class.. she just tends to ramble most of the class about topics that have nothing to do with the lesson for the day. weekly podcasts and two bigger assignments towards the end of the semester. overall not a hard class at all, she does take attendance tho
Sometimes she goes on tangents and spends the entire class ranting about something totally irrelevant. Weekly podcast and typically a quiz. Exams are not that hard just read the chapters and pay attention to the slide shows. VERY hard on deadlines no exceptions unless emergency of some sort.
This teacher does nothing but sit down and drink three cans of bubbly while complaining about off topic stuff that has nothing to do with the class. Her class is actually not hard, she just makes it more complicated than what it really is.
the class in terms of workload and work done is super easy, everything is laid out super perfectly. lectures are a little bit of a waste of time since she gets off topic super easily.
Dr. Mac's class is an easy A if you do the work and you follow instructions. Unfortunately, she does tend to go off-topic a lot in her classes and is forgetful, and can have an attitude.
With Dr. Mac, she will run off on tangents, that is true. I feel as though looking at it objectively, she could communicate wayyy better than she does, and take students input into account. I definitely wouldn't take her again.
I have taken Afro American and PolSci and both of her classes were easy. All you have to do is go to class, listen to podcasts and write responses to them, and do the quizzes and you will get a 100 out of the class. I recommend! It is true that she does go on rants in her lectures but I think they are interesting and informative.
The class is very easy, you have a podcast assignment due every week and quizzes every now and then. However, Dr. Mac has attitude problem and can be very rude at time.
I personally liked Professor McCalester because she made class discussions fun and interesting. She does have the knack for going off topic and rambling, but overall I enjoyed the class. The work and content is not difficult at all. Just complete your podcast discussion posts and do well on the quizzes and exams.
I took Afro 186 my Freshmen year at Howard, and I honestly do not recommend her to ANYONE. She is not sympathetic at all to what students are going through, so if you try to reason/plead with her for your grade, you're wasting your time. She does teach during lectures, but refuses to record classes, and talks about irrelevant things. Don't do it!!!
Her class is "easy" in the way that she doesn't give you much work to do but then expects a large midterm out of you when she doesn't even teach half the material in class. She spends half the class period on a random topic that doesn't even pertain to the class and then proceeds to go over the same content that we've gone over 5x already.
She spends all of class time rambling about random things.
I really enjoyed her POLS class, she is a good professor, just pay attention, take notes and submit your work on time, and you will be fine. I definitely recommend and will definitely take her class again.
quiz every week. Just log into class and put her on mute and you'll be fine. She's actually insightful and funny sometimes tho.
Lots of reading but the book is given. Attendance was graded, but just read and take thorough notes. Podcast every Friday, 4 quizzes, midterm, and final. everyone thought it would be an easy A bc 3 of her quizzes and the midterm was online, but the 4th quiz and final was VERY HARD. DO THE BUSY WORK ASSIGNS! it helps if u dont do so well on exams
Dr. McCalester is a good professor just make sure you attend the class and pay attention, especially for the midterm and final. Everything is written on the syllabus including a course schedule that she updates if it needs to be changed. Readings were provided as well.
Podcast posts every week are due on Fridays, attendance is mandatory, the textbook is provided, and everything is on the syllabus along with a course schedule. Definitely an easy grade if you pay attention to the lecture slides and read a good portion of the textbook.
Dr. Mac goes on unecessary tangents , and wastes most of her lecture time talking about her personal life. Her directions for assignments change all the time and she does not provide clear feedback at times. However, shes funny asf so if you want a class where you laugh and barely do work her courses are for you.
honestly i didnt hate her. yes she rambles but hoesntly sometimes its useful, if not- id just tune her out bc shes online. i personally didnt think she was too condscending like others- a flip perspective is the fact ive seen some people ask her the dumbest questions in class. really easy A . attendance required. interesting resources & podcast.
really easy just had podcast reviews due every friday. gives you all the slides so don't have to buy the book. attendance is mandatory. she can go off on tangents but overall really nice and explains things when asked.
Prof. McCalester is very talkative and she rambles in class alot but she's extremely knowledgeable. She is strict about her deadline so emailing her after WILL NOT work for you. Her class is simple there's discussion board and a midterm and a final that's really it so as long as you do the work there isn't no reason to not have an A.
Dr. Mac was so much fun to have as a professor! Her rants her hilarious and informational. As long as you do the quizzes on time (all multiple choice) and complete the podcast assignments, you'll easily pass this class. Emailing her is a bit difficult though so try avoiding situations where that might be necessary.
Dr. Mac has a very clear grading criteria so you must stay on top of everything. Procrastination and forgetfulness aren't forgiven in her section. She is informed, but class is heavy on lectures, slideshows, and the online textbook. Very minimal participation from students.
She's super funny and nice as a person, however, she just ranted about random things most of the time. As long as you stay on top of the podcasts and do good on the quizzes, you should be fine.
1. She doesn't teach anything 2. She rants most of the class, rants about PERSONAL conversations she's had with students 3. Belittles people 4. Very discouraging
This is my 2nd time having Dr. Mac as a professor and the truth is that while she is super caring and familial, she digresses from the curriculum ALL the time. She will spend the entire class talking about either her personal life or a singular question, with only the last 15 mins to teach. Luckily, the class is easy so just read the book.
Just make sure to do the readings and take ample notes, because the lectures during class time rarely have anything to do with the coursework at hand. Despite that, you are still expected to know the information for exams and she CAN tell if you cheated. Just read please.
She isn't by any means a horrible professor when it comes to talking about actual class material. She just loves to go on long tangents like students complaining about attendance, etc; and it gets to be rather tiresome. But her class is easy, just go to lectures and you'll be fine.
I took both this class and her pol-001 class, I enjoyed her, she was strict but nice and always gave us better advice than the advisors themselves. She told us about how to take summer classes to gain credit and more. it's an easy class as long as you pay attention in class even though sometimes she does rant you will do good.
She is a decent professor. She is really straightforward which I like, but she goes on these extremely long rants during class for like 15 minutes. And it will be about the same things every time as well. Class itself easy. 4 quizzes , podcasts, midterm, and final. The fourth quiz and final definitely harder than all other assessments.
I am halfway through the semester, and Dr. McCalester is just not a good professor. First of all, she goes on long tangents every class about unrelated things, and I mean, she spends like half a class (20-30 minutes) ranting. She also doesn't teach us anything other than "how to annotate". If you want to learn DON'T TAKE HER.
Dr. Mac is an alright professor in that she will answer your questions. However, she will be extremely condescending while doing so. Midterm and final papers make up 60% of your grade, which she is very particular about. Pretty stressful. Lectures consist of her speaking about literally nothing 90% of the time. Do your readings, they are crucial.
I don't have too many bad things to say about this professor but the don't expect this to be a normal lecture based class. Every lecture we have had was partially going over readings or going over the directions of an assignment multiple times. Our grade consisted of discussion posts, midterm essay, and our final essay. Do the work and you'll pass.
SHE IS SOOOO ANNOYING OH MY GOD! this woman is the most condescending person I have ever encountered. As I'm writing this, I haven't finished her class but I just need to forewarn y'all to not take her class like please. Truly I have never dreaded a class more. Academically, fine professor but talks too much and is so full of herself. Light hw load
Division 1 yapper. Spends a lot of time at the top of class talking about nothing, is also lwk condescending. Podcast assignments are ultimately unrelated to class content but required weekly. Quizzes are at least googleable so lectures ultimately don't really matter.
I actually really enjoyed taking this course but beware: she does yap a lot. She constantly goes on tangents about nothing but I honestly don't care. The work itself is easy and tests can generally be found online (but you really don't need them if you study the ppts). Be prepared to spend 25 mins each class discussing the attendance policy.
Professor McCalester is one of the best Professors at Howard University. She is very understanding and shares lots of useful information and advice! her classes are very straight forward and the assignments are a reasonable amount. Would definitely recommend taking her class!
Extremely great professor, she was very kind and respected. She doesn't do late handing in of assignments or reopening quizzes so keep accountability. Assignments due every Friday and she talks about very informative topics which is nice. Class is online but attendance is mandatory(grade every meeting). Would recommend
Dr Mac literally doesn't teach the class, u will only do really easy busy work, which she admits in class is busy work, but she doesn't make an effort to give you any work that will help you learn anything. It doesn't even matter because the class is ridiculously easy and you can coast by with an A if u show up and have common sense.
She talks a lot, so I felt like coming to the class was unnecessary, but she gave a lot of extra credit.
Your grade consists of a podcast every friday, a few quizzes, a midterm, and a final, all pretty easy as the class is online. But Prof. McCalester constantly uses class time to lecture students on stuff that could've been an E-Mail. She also comes off as very abrasive at times, too. Take her for the easy A, but be ready to hear her attitude.
She's really cool and take this class for an easy A. She's very passionate in teaching this subject. Class is very flexible and lectures are enjoyable. Everything is online. 1-2 Assignments due every week.
