This professor is very very difficult to follow. I would only recommend this teacher to someone who already has their degree's, and is taking this class for nothing more then to show off. Any regular student cannot pass this class. I do NOT recommend this lady for anyone
This teacher is really hard. She loads you with work. The explanations are fair if you are good at english. She is very passionate about what she teaches, but that doesn't help the hardness of the class.
SAVE YOURSELF! Don't take this class with her, specially, if you are not a native speaker. But if you have a masochist side this class will suit you!
She is very nice and respectful towards students. Lots of essays to write, but works with students. She is very flexible, and if you work hard, you will make the grade. I like the oral presentation and class discussions. There was never a dull moment in her class.
I loved Ms.Beckford. Many people complained about the workload, but this is college and we're all adults. I appreciate the way she challenged me as student to be a great writter. She was of great guidance when it came to speaking and writting proper english. I wish there were more strong and passionate teachers as she is.
OH god.. This teacher is on Speed. You think I'm kidding. I am taking this class now and I am warning you. Unless you have a photographic memory and write about 200 words a minute you will fail this class. Speaks with horrible accident too
ms beckford was a great teacher, very understanding and i love the way she taught. as long as you did your work and paid attention it was not too hard of a class. She does do pop quizzes, but again if you do your work she's fine. Also a teacher from my old HS, and if you get her telling a story, its good for wasting time
RUN AWAY!!! I am an English Major and I am barely passing her class. Super Crazy Anal. I took several paper that I received C's and B's on to the Head of the English Department to get her opinion and she didn't find half the problems Ms. Beckford did.
HORRIBLE...she is, by far the WORST teacher i've ever had. if you don't do something perfect the first time she gets frustrated. she's so anal about the most stupid little things, and her corrections on your paper don't make sense when what you originally wrote did. i got straight C's in her class...DON'T TAKE HER, WHATEVER YOU DO. This teacher is very hard. The work load is heavy and constant, with no time left for any other subjects. Despite this, I feel sure I learnt a great deal from her. I recommend taking this class, if you have a passion for English, or if it is your only subject for the semester. Good Luck!

Too many people give this professor negative ratings for the wrong reasons. They say she is too tough. She might be, but it pays off because I learned a lot from her. She made me a better writer, and she emphasises standard English which is very important.
Homework every class but it is only like a 1 page paper double spaced. if you do fail you can resubmit you paper. all you have to do is changed what she wrote on ur paper. a 1st grader can do this. pbcc has alot of lazy students. i got a B. if you cant handle her class... drop out of college

I took her a few semesters back and i'm still hearing bad things from friends of mine who have or are taking her. She reminds me of a boarding school teacher. Very strict, and tough on grading. I was a good writer throughout my high school and early college days, until she made me totally uninterested in it. I wouldn't take her if you can help it.

This woman was the worst Teacher I have ever had. She speaks with such a thick accent and makes so many comments on American English, she will mispronounce a word and get upset if you pronounce it correctly. She picks on people she doesnt like and picks her favorites the first week of class. I would recommend not taking her class.
As a teacher she wants her students to excel. I loved her class! Class participation was mandatory and insightful. Yes, you have to work and EARN your grade in her class. Take her class, your critical thinking skills will greatly improve!! She's a teacher for those who want to learn.
She is one of the worst english professors I have had the displeasure of taking. Pronounces words in that way that makes the students feel stupid and inferrior. Also, she always criticizes students for missing class even if they have a doctors note.

I took this class in the spring semester. at 1st i thought she was tough & unsensitive, but i was wrong (w/ the unsensitive part). she wants u to do well in class & be more independent w/ ourselves. Yeah she's tough, but i did decent in that class. I learned many things & my writing did improve. If u are not a lazy person, take this class.

Very hard teacher but you actually learn something. I walked away knowing more about MLA format than before and actually feel like a much better writer. If you don't want to actually learn then don't take her. I noticed too many people in PBCC take their education as a joke and just want to squeeze through. She does not cater to those students.

I took her for enc1102 and she is super strict grades too tough and doesn't take time to explain correctly if you want to do well its better to use the writing lab and any other professor unless if you are taking just her class.
I've never had a teacher as strict as this one. I love writing, but she has taken all the joy from it. She screams throughout the whole class. We watch mini films that we're supposed to take notes on except we can't here because she wont stop talking. She does not consider the fact that students have other classes and assigns too much work. Watch Out!!! She has high expectations and expects you to know the first half of the course before you even walk in the room on the first day. She was born to lecture. Teaches out of the book, grades rough and if you have questions, don't bother asking her. She'll just yell at you and make you ask a classmate(who is probably as lost as you are).

The way how she grade makes you upset. She is hard grading your assignments; she found mistakes that other cannot found.
Did not find her as hard as others who have posted. As long as you pay attention in class and have your textbooks, you should not have a problem. She always somehow manages to find mistakes in your papers but I found all her feedback was helpful. I found it to be an alright class
Not to say i am a perfect student, but i truthfully believe i recieved an "f" in the class, before i withdrew, unfairly. The assignments she gives are poorly explained along with there being no rubric to go by.
Very unclear, she does not take the time to thoroughly and properly clarify ANYTHING! I was in a class of some 30+ students, we ended the semester with 6 (including myself) please head these warnings, she is not the professor to take. BEWARE! Unless you are confident in your writing ability, don't take her class. She is absolutely horrible at explaining tasks, prompting learning and teaching in general. She screams so loud. Has a heavy accent. She does not think anyone's work is good but her own. Everything is wrong. She thinks she's an english master. But she's not. Even the smartest kids don't get a good grade.
She grades very hard and finds many, many, many mistakes with any work you give her. She is obsessed with "MLA" every class she basically teaches MLA style. This is kind of a good thing because the tests are just all about citing things correctly and using MLA style--versus the tests being on stories or something.
The class is okay. Even for me someone who is not very good at writing. The only thing I really didn't like about this class was that we had to come up with our own topics which is good for some. Grades are mostly based on essays and some presentation of essays in class she does give homework. She does not let you know what your overall grade is.

(I'm currently on the Deans List) Professor Beckford is the reason why I refer to RateMyProfessor when I choose my professors. After withdrawing from her class and taking it with another professor, I received an A+. She does not articulate what she wants done and if you ask questions, she insults your intelligence and still doesn't answer them.
This professor is not helpful. She does not provide feedback in a timely manner. She does not follow her own syllabus, provide rubrics and leaves students guessing. She has no empathy for her students. Do not sign up for this professor if you are weak in this area. Find a professor that cares and wants to help you succeed!

Most reviews will complain about the work or her grading criteria, but if you really want to learn something from a teacher that takes no BS, Joy is not half bad. Yes, she is loud and slightly rude on occasion, but keep in mind she is an older woman probably retiring soon. From an 1102 POV, I thought she was great even though she had a lot of work.

Professor Beckford isn't the best. Every little thing you do has to be in MLA or points off. Nothing made sense in her class. Had to get 3 books for her class and one of them was written by her. She was rude sometimes too. She has a nice side but rarely shows it. The weekly reading didn't help at all. Grading didn't make any sense.

I shouldve checked rate my Professor first. This confirms my doubts. She is very rude she tried to scold me because she thought I didnt take out two sheets of paper the first time she stated and I did but she didnt apologize. First week and I just knew it wasn't going to work out. I understand older generation professors teach differently but the constant yelling and rudness is unnecessary.

I learned nothing from her class. She often bragged about how hard her tests were to pass and how few students passed her class. I lost points on my handwritten papers because the letters in my words were "too far apart". She is crazy and yells a lot. She also made us buy a book THAT SHE WROTE that we only used once. Joy Beckford is a horrible professor! Her grading system is flawed. You're not able to view your grade on canvas, only until the end of the semester. No extra credit or make up work. Randomly assigns test, quizzes, and homework. Randomly choses when to make you present certain papers. She just horrible all around!

Literally the absolute worst professor you could ever have. She does not let you use your phone at all unless you need to look up words. Being absent counts against your grade and she grades VERY strictly. Has a mandatory project that u turn in at the end where you have to write 14 journal entries about philosophers or something.

Joy Beckford is a tough teacher. If you know how to write standard English correctly and want to challenge yourself, take her class. I was able to get a C by showing up daily, and completing work.
Honestly this is a truly horrible professor she just docent explain stuff and expects you to know perfect writing I wouldn't recommend this class if someone is actively trying to receive credit.
This was the worst professor do not take her class. She would constantly yell at the class if the students did not answer her question in under 0.2 seconds. She would assign more homework onto the homework already given out. And if you do not like presenting in front of people, she will force you and make you feel ashamed of being nervous.
