SHES A REALLY GOOD TEACHER!!!!!!!
She is a great math professor. She explains clearly and is always there to help. I recommend it to anyone who hates math, but needs it. A GREAT GREAT PROFESSOR.
She is a wonderful professor. Explains the material very well & is willing to go out of her way to help the student. She's a great professor, especially for those who aren't good at math.
She is incredibly caring and she really knows what she is doing. She is the best math teacher I have ever had. She is really concerned about her students' performance and she is willing to do whatever it takes.

This is the only human being alive who has ever gotten me interested in Math, she is incredible, so caring and wonderful.
I took a statistics course in high school, and thank goodness cuz I would have no idea what she's talking about if I didn't. The way she explains things is really hard to understand. Ask questions during the exam and she'll pretty much give you the answer.
This is an incredibly easy class! The material is so easy and she explains it well. She gives everyone MORE than what they need for the test (printouts about what cards are in a 52 deck). It is so easy and not that boring. She is so nice and very helpful, but, quite frankly, its so easy, a lot of help is unnecessary.
She's very clear and mostly fair in her grading. I get a weird vibe from her sometimes but she genuinely enjoys teaching and it makes the class as interesting as a math class can be
She is an incredibly nice lady. Very helpful and clear in class.
Very easy, very helpful, i would definitely recommend taking her class if maths isn't your easiest subject.
She is very attentive to students and their needs. Problems help clarify her words.
Amazing teacher. The homework is really easy and online and she's always really helpful.
Great teacher. Awesome personality and it shows through her teaching. Really helpful if you go to her office hours, tests are very easy.
she is the best teacher i've ever had for any math class!!! she's awesome! she's always there to help you whether it's during class hours or office hours. she's gives everyone a chance to do well in her class..the tests are easy, she gives extra credit, and the homework is online and super easy.
An absolute Joy! No Pun intended! She is really nice and does a great job teaching. She also gets to know your name and personality. Material was easy in 101.
her 1st name pretty much says it all. she really wants her students to do well - for example, the other day, when we got our tests back, she let us make corrections and we got half the the points we got wrong, added back to our score! so if you got 80, you ended up with a 90. as you can tell, shes a reallyx2 sweet teacher
She is a good teacher. There are a lot of extra credit points, which helped me, and as long as you do mathxl, and do well on the final, you will get a good grade. Oh, and if you do better on the final then your worst test grade, the final replaces that test! (b/c you knew it for the final). I would take her class! :)
One of the best math teachers you'll have. Her statistics class was amazing. She is all the reviews say: easy to understand, helpful, and positive. For once math wasn't a burden. She uses Mathxl for the homework and has good reviews for the test. Lots of opportunities to recover if you mess up. Best thing is prob. the cheerful/helpful attitude.
She goes over the vast majority of the problems that will be on the homework in class, but sometimes something random will appear in the homework that she didn't talk about, and you will have to teach yourself. Overall, a great class. I'd love to take another class with her.
BEST math teacher I have ever had. One of the few English-speakers in the department. I definitely recommend her.
She's extremely nice and cares about her students. Can't ask for a better Math teacher. She speaks clearly and her exams doesn't stray away from what she teaches.
She is the best math teacher i've ever had...i would definitely reccommend taking her!!
A sweetheart who takes the time to learn your name and really cares about you. I had her for 101 and insisted on her for 103. Lectures are very clear and she gives partial credit on tests and extra credit chances. 103 consisted of three tests, a group project, and final. Overall, if you see, everyone and their brother recommends her! She's great!
i dont think that shes that sweet, but shes really clear. for those of us who need math to be explained clearly and slowly, she is a really great teacher. i like that the final exam has no surprises, its just variations of the questions off your old tests.
7 quizzes, and she lets you drop two. four exams and a final. overall easy class if you go, take notes, and do the homework. expect the most complex problems on the tests but she prepares you for them
What a great teacher. I HATE math, but she made the class somewhat enjoyable. She was helpful, and made things easier. Highly recommended.
She's a very good professor. Gives great, simple and concise explanations anyone can understand. I don't like math but I don't get bored in her classes. She's a good math teacher, I recommend her.
A wolf in sheep's clothing. She pretends she cares but if you have a real problem like someone in your family dying... she won't take the time to make a make up test for you... Yes, I'm bitter. I ended up with an "A" in her class but I never got to say goodbye...
OMG she is great! this is the kind of teacher with whom all the athletes take math because shes is so great at explaning everything, shes slow and clear and you dont have to feel embarrassed to ask questions...TAKE HER!
Make a list of your favorite teachers of all time. Now, take Dr. Beverly and, sadly, say goodbye to one of those teachers. She is one of my favorite teachers ever -- elementary teachers included. She is just so nurturing, kind, and hilarious, just like a teacher from Elementary school. She teacher so well, including real-life application always. :)
Great teacher. Everything you want in a teacher. You don't need the book but make sure you buy MathXL. Highest recommendation
Very good teacher! I recommend taking her! She is very nice and cares about her students! There is a lot of Math XL homework, but it helps for tests. She also gives a bunch of extra credit opportunities!
She is a great teacher! She was literally the only teacher I have ever found that could get me to understand math! She is a beautiful person and really cares about her students. She looks at all her students as people and wants to see each of them succeed. Go to class and do the homework, & you will be set to take the tests. Material comes off h.w
awesome teacher. really nice and helpful. class is super easy.
Best math professor I have ever had and I have had 6 different ones. I hated math until this professor. Loved going class and made it a fun learning environment. Recommend her to any body who has had trouble with math before.
SUPER EASY CALC CLASS. I HAD CALC PRIOR SO CLASS DEFINITELY WASN'T MANDATORY BUT EVEN IF YOU HAVEN'T HAD CALC...SHE'S VERY CLEAR AND THOROUGH AND JUST A GOOD TEACHER. CAN'T USE CALCULATORS BUT THAT MEANS THE TESTS ARE A LITTLE EASIER. TAKE HER IF YOU CAN!! HOMEWORK IS ON WEBASSIGN IF THAT MATTERS TO YOU.
She is AWESOME!!! Always goes over problems, addresses questions and makes learning easy. Tries to make everyone participate and gives a lot of extra credit. Her tests are easy but no calculators. Theyre still easy!!! She is that kind of Professor you wish can teach you math the whole way! I got an A in her class. She was a marvelous professor!!!
Not too hard, very easy to understand but test questions can be tricky with a lot of algebra. no calculators allowed. Attendance optional, online graded homework.
such a great professor. She truly cares about her students and she is always willing to help. I loved her class and I truly recommend her for all level.
Beverly is awesome. Homework has unlimited attempts, test are easy and straightforward, and lots of extra credit opportunities.
All the good reviews for Beverly are from students NOT in MTH111. Beverly seems to be proving herself as a hard calc teacher this semester. Not easy, test are difficult, and she is the hardest grader you will ever come across.
This teacher was not very helpful at all if you got it great you were king of the class however if you did not understand she was not good at explaining what you did wrong she would just repeat what the book told her and kept doing problems like a robot. not helpful at all just explain the math!! stop reading from the book!!
I took her because my friend said she was a good professor, and she is. Her tests can be a little hard but if you understand everything, you'll be fine. It seems like she doesn't like to repeat herself so though attendance isn't mandatory, if you miss a day, you might be lost forever.
whoever rated her poorly probably did not show up to class or pay attention. She was a great professor for MTH111 and made calculus seem easy. Everything was put simply and the homework was a great way to boost your grade. It was not hard to get an A in her class and if you do the homework, you'll do great in this class.
Extremely nice, and very helpful. She cares about your grade and appreciates good students so I don't know why anyone would rate her badly unless they were bitter students. She makes math easy, and is very kind. Lots of homework but it helps. Also she gives extra credit opportunities. Take her!
Outwardly nice, but also strict and unforgiving. Test questions are always a jump up from the homework, which is all online. She may review 3 or 4 HW questions in each class, and doesn't explain anything in detail, she simply reviews problems. If you did well in pre-calc, it should carry you through, otherwise find a better professor.
IDK how people rate her negatively. Lots of HW. She's nice & explains things clearly. She doesn't go over EVERYTHING but come on this isn't high school. If u have a Q she helps u out. If u can do the HW u can pass her tests. They're open ended Q's & she gives u credit for the steps u get right. She gives extra credit throughout. Good professor.
Not very thorough, and tests are difficult even if you've done well on the HW. TA's grade the quizzes, which are noticeably easier than the tests, and She grades the exams, which she is much less forgiving with. If you have a ton of time to pour into this class, you'll be okay; if not, try to find a prof. that allows notecards such as Prof Bibby.
She does not care and will not work with you if you have a problem within the class. She was not nice when approached during office hours and her tests were a lot harder than the online homework. It took hours and hours of effort if math was not your thing. I am not sure where the high rating comes from.I have not come across any good calc teachers
I currently have Beverly for finite math and I would recommend her. She uses an online textbook and all homework is online too. She is helpful and respectful, and always seems available for help. Tests are not bad, and she lets you drop one grade at the end of the semester. If you need to fill a math requirement, Beverly's is a good class to take.
she's a great teacher who really seems to care when students aren't understanding concepts.. Goes slow if you ask her to & breaks even the smallest parts of problems down when asked. if you're taking this class, try to get her!
Nice woman but i find her teaching style a bit off. I hate the online math program but you have to use it cuz all the hw is on there. theres 3 tests and 1 massive final.
Very nice and helpful and open to questions. Lots of opportunity for extra credit.
Good teacher, but pick favorites!
all homework is online. If you mark a problem online, she will go over it in class. Nice lady, cares about her students. I recommend her.
Honestly the only problem I had with her was that the tests' problems were a huge step up from the homeworks'. She explained everything well and she assigns a lot of homework, but I was not prepared for the difficulty of the tests despite understanding the homework. She drops the lowest test grade with your grade on her final.
All online homework. Takes attendance but not for a grade. Tests are very similar to problems done in class/on homework, so participation definitely helps. She's very nice and keeps the class involved. Also works out homework problems upon request and accepts hw extensions.
I thought she was very nice but she didnt seem to care about how you were doing in the class and the hw was very easy so you would think you did good on the exams (there are four and then one final) but they were much more challenging than what she went over in class
Unless you're an athlete or math enthusiast, you're just another name on her attendance list. But she's at least helpful on homework questions. Takes attendance but they don't count, but still go bc makes the material easier to understand since there's no txtbk. Make sure to do the online hmwk in time.
So good!!!!!!!!
Very clear and helpful. Also super nice!
Great teacher who is really willing to help you do better. It's not mandatory to come to class but I would suggest it because a lot of what she puts on the test comes from class material.
Great teacher. Online homework is through Webassign.com, and this is a good way to learn the material as it will tell you when you are wrong and why. Four tests, extra credit assignments (4 pts. each) for all of them, and the tests are very appropriate for the super clear material she teaches. Great teacher and highly recommended.
Great teacher, explains everything perfectly. Class dynamic is easy and organized, and classes are sometimes entertaining.
Very clear lecture,great impression
Her class is not that hard but the problem is she makes tests a lot harder than the examples and homework.
Dr. Beverly is an amazing instructor. I've never enjoyed math but she made me look forward to going to class. She also explains things many times if you need her to and she doesn't get annoyed when students ask questions, in fact she encourages them. She's also always available to meet during office hours. She prepares you very well for her exams.
Good instructor and nice person. Four exams, lots of homework problems, group project, and cumulative final. Final replaces lowest exam grade. Exam problems aren't that bad (although harder than homework), but you have to do 12-15 long problems in 50 minutes, which makes it tough. If you're already solid at math and can do it fast, take her.
Ms. Beverly was an excellent teacher. She was very clear in her understanding of the concepts and great at explaining how to go about doing a problem. She made calculus look and seem easy. The tests weren't too hard if you studied and did all of the homework questions. She also somehow was able to keep students interested in the class.
SHE IS REALLY HARD . If you need to know math then she is good. For business students that have to take this course, do not take her!! Lots of homework and 5 exams. If you really need/want to learn this subject then take her... but if not then dont because it will be hell. Tests are very very difficult and much harder questions than on homework.
Very strict graders and specific on what she looking for in terms of answers on tests and quizzes, but I hated missing her class. She was very clear and always willing to help during office hours. I recommend taking her if you genuinely want to learn calculus.
Her class is really helpful and clear. She is very nice person. If u really want to learn calculus well, take her class!!!
Dr. Beverly seems a little tough at first, after going to a few office hours you'll realize she is helpful. Her lectures lack detail so it makes it more challenging to finish the homework. I've gotten B's on her tests and I've taken AP Calc. She does give extra credit points on tests. If you have a strong calc background take her class.
Extremely clear and makes math feel easy. Tells you what to expect from tests. Only thing is if you miss a class you will be way behind on content; she goes through topics very quickly.
Amazing professor. Every concept she teaches is supported by at least one or two examples, which really helps in calculus. Gives many opportunities for extra credit and tells you everything you could do if you're not doing well in the class. Drops some grades at the end of the semester. Would definitely recommend taking calc with her.
By far the best math teacher I've ever had, clear and teaches from scratch. Go to office hours if you have questions and she will help you more than a tutor. Show up, pay attention and do hw and you'll do fine. Tests are more difficult than hw but completely fair. I definitely recommend Dr. Beverly
Simple online hw, and a group quiz every Friday. 1 test a month. She drops some low scores at the end of the semester. Attendance is extra credit. I HATE math, but she actually made me enjoy it so much that I look forward to coming to class. Thank you Mrs. Beverly for helping me conquer math!!!
Such a great lecturer! Sure, she doesn't go over every concept in the book, and some of the HW problems can seem impossible, but if you actually sit down and read the book you'll do fine. Group quizzes once a week but you can use your notes. Tests are doable if you actually study. Overall, if you put the work in you should be fine!
Attendance is mandatory, group quizzes every Thursday, basically a test every other week. The test are extremely difficult, I wouldn't recommend this class ever!
I loved this class! I thought she explained everything very well. I am usually not very good at math but I got an A on every test.
Great professor. I'm awful at math and was worried coming into this class. She is constantly there to help students. Weekly homework (but not too much). No surprises on the exams. group quizzes every week. Keep in mind this is more of a REVIEW course than learning the info. Would recommend! I didn't get an A but many students did!
Reads one page from the textbook and thinks that will help you with the homework which is very extensive and tough to do online. Plus the homework and Tests are so much more than what she thinks she is teaching. Take someone else if possible
She's very clear and accessible, if you need any help she's there. Homework is online and easy to do, if it is a little long. Group quizzes once a week, done online also. Three exams a year, not including a comprehensive final, that are a little convoluted and complicated. If you really know your stuff, you'll do fine on the exam. GO TO CLASS.
She is very straight forward. Tests match the homework online, but you definitely have to practice it for an A. She is strict on notation, very fair in her grading. If you pay attention in class, she does tell you what she expects of you so if anyone complains she throws out random things its bc they didn't pay attention. Go to class for +20 points
Group quizzes every week with 3 tests and a final. Homework grade, quizzes, final and extra credit attendance/participation (not mandatory) points are components that make up the grade. Interacts with students during lecture. Fair, helpful, strict on notation, clear on grading (tells you what she expects) MTH140 is calc1 divided into 2 semesters.
Very nice woman. She will help you if you go to office hours. Attendance is extra credit.
Dr. Beverly is an amazing professor! She is very clear. Be sure to attend class as she gives 20 extra credit points! There is online homework for every section learned in class along with online group quizzes every week. There are 3 tests and 1 final exam. If you pay attention, do your homework, and take clear notes, you will do well!
Dr. Beverly will make you work hard, and you will have to learn most of the material on your own. If you're looking for an easier way out of your calculus requirement I strongly recommend a different professor. Her tests are hard, and the questions are always the harder than the homework, making studying difficult.
Dr. Beverly is a nice professor. She is available and will help you if you ask. However in class she goes over easy examples on homework she gives intermediate question and then on test she gives hard question. Unless you like to teach yourself the material I suggest another professor.
Do not take her class. She is the type of professor who takes off points any chance she gets. Problems done in class are 10x easier than the homework, quizzes, and exams. Take someone else. The only good thing about her class is that she gives 20 bonus points if you answer one question a day correctly, which means you have to attend every class.
Class is hard if you don't put in effort. The online homework is heavy at first, but then levels out. The HW is always harder than the problems gone over in class, but her office hours & the Math Lab help. You can earn up to 20 xtra credit points, and she drops the two lowest hw and quizzes. Every wk there is an open note group quiz. Final is easy.
Dr. Beverly is the best. Her lectures are very straightforward and genuinely wants you to understand the material. She may be a little strict with technology and grading on tests, but she is very accessible outside of class. Go to her office hours, especially before test days, and pay attention in class and you won't be surprised on exams.
Professor Beverly is a very nice lady that wants you to understand the material. Go to class and take notes and ask her questions if you don't understand something. Use the homework problems to study for her tests because she gives difficult problems on both. She gives group quizzes every week which should help your grade. Use her office hours.
A little intimidating in the beginning. Excellent professor, very clear and thorough. Do not hesitate to go to office hours, she is extremely helpful and willing to take as long as needed. If you put the time in and pay attention in class, you shouldn't be struggling.
Dr. Beverly is the best professor at UM! Definitely take her if you get the chance. The class is easy because she teaches you everything you need to know and then the homework is exactly what is on the test. She also gives group quizzes every week and extra credit every day to help boost your grade. Attendance is not mandatory but is really helpful
Fave college Professor to date, BY FAR. She's so good at what she does that I'm taking her again for Finite Math. Simply put, she cares about you if you care about your grade. If she sees you putting in work, she will absolutely do what she can to help you along the way. She's extremely fair & honest. Tests are very similar to her reviews.
Joy is insane. Never take this teacher if you do not have to. She takes off points for work done on her tests that she does not find necessary. She sits in class and goes over power pints the entire time. She is NOT a good teacher one bit. STAY AWAY OR BE READY TO FAIL.
She was a very easy teacher. She moves very slowly, which is nice. If you need help with the class, she is always available and gives great extra help. I suggest taking her class if you don't really like math because she moves so slowly. Nice lady!! Hates phones though
I have taken her for two classes and really enjoy her teaching style. You put forth the effort and she will do what it takes to get you there. She makes herself available all the time and goes out of the way to help. You won't find a better professor.
Great choice for introductory Calculus. Looks for specific criteria only to ensure students understand material instead of robotic equations. Accessible in office hours and genuinely wants students to do well. She lives on campus and is very involved, take for sure.
If go to her class mostly and pay attention you should have paid. It is an easy A. Because the material (PPT) she releases in class is pretty comprehensive. Or you could make her office hours if you have any questions. She would love to help students with all of the problems.
By far one of the best professors I've had at UM. The class is hard but she gives you plenty of opportunities to bump your grade. Explains concepts very well and has a lot of office hours available and is willing to help if you don't understand a concept. Her class made me actually enjoy math!
Love Dr. Beverly!! She is SO sweet, funny and an incredible professor. Def take her if you get a chance. Had her for Calc 1 and I had never taken calc before, but ended up with an A because she is so thorough and really explains the material very well. She's very accessible through office hours (def go she is so helpful). good class and great prof
Dr. Beverly is one of the most inspirational professors I have ever had. I went into Calculus 1 feeling timid and nervous and left it wanting to minor in math. Her office hours are incredibly helpful and flexible, and she's an incredible generous and passionate person. I cannot recommend her enough.
Dr. Beverly is by far one of the best professors I've had throughout my college career. She is very organized and is excellent at explaining challenging concepts. Although the exams aren't the easiest, there are no surprises. If you put in the effort and ensure you understand the material, you'll do just fine.
she drops 5 quizzes and two classwork grades plus replaces your lowest test with the final exam so its easy to get an A even if you screw up a little
AVOID. Horrible professor. Her class examples are so much easier than what is on the homework and the exam. She thinks she has so much authority. The worst professor I have had a UM. Do not take her.
TAKE HER AT ANY CLASS. 100% guarantee you would actually learn something
She's great. She is clearly very passionate and knowledgeable. One of the best math teachers I've had.
By far the best math teacher I have ever had. She makes you feel confident in your abilities and is very accessible, especially for freshman because she has office hours in Hecht. I wish I could have Dr. Beverly for all of my math courses
Dr. Beverly is the best. She is super knowledgeable and will help you when you're confused. I wish I could take her for all of my math classes.
Dr. Beverly is one of the best math teachers I've ever had. She explains difficult concepts clearly, and she tries to explain why a problem is solved a certain way instead of just telling you how to do it. Don't be shy to ask questions during lectures or after class; She is more than willing to help. Take her class!
Dr. Beverly is the best. I used to hate calculus in high school b/c my teacher was terrible and ruined math for me, but Beverly totally has totally made up for it. Shes great at explaining things and Ive come to love calculus and enjoy her lectures. Shes super easy to talk to and so helpful at office hours.
MUST TAKE HER!! She is the best math professor if not the best professor overall I've ever had. If you take her notes, do the homework, go to class, and see her outside of class she will love you and you will do well. She truly cares about her students and runs her classroom very well. Not an easy A but definitely would recommend.
Very caring and wants you to succeed. Explains concepts coherently and actually makes the class a bit of fun.
I took her for two semesters and she was a really good prof. You have to go to class and she makes you participate but you only have to answer one question and it helps you learn. Homework and quizzes almost every week but not too bad. She offers extra credit and lets you drop 1 out of 4 exams and replace it with your final exam grade.
Professor Beverly is a great teacher. She really cares about her students and gets to know each of them by name. Her class can move fast at times but if you keep up with your home work you should do well. She assigns the homework on my math lab and has it due the day of the test so you are accountable for keeping up. I would highly recommend.
Great Professor; class is hard and moves fast but it'll be the same curriculum with any other prof. She explains math very clearly and is helpful if you come after class or during office hours. Organized and knows what she's doing. Can be intimidating at first but is actually really nice. Takes attendance so don't skip. HW all due day of test.
The way Dr. Beverly teaches makes calculus so easy to understood. You definitely have to take her. She prepares you really well for all the exams. The homework can get hard, though. She really helps you out with your grades; she drops the lowest 2 quiz scores, lowest homework grade, and replaces your lowest test grade with your final exam grade!!
Dr. Beverly really cares about her students and will do the most to help them understand the material. For someone who has taken calculus before, her class can be slow as she explains the content very thoroughly. But if youre new to calculus or struggle with math she is the best professor there is. Grade consists of 4 exams and quiz and homeworks.
Beverly is an amazing professor! The class isn't an easy A, but as long as you go to class, study, and go to office hours when needed you will do fine on the exams. She is quite possibly one of the best math professor in the school. Taking her again for 141!
Super fast-paced, not for everyone.
Dr. Beverly is a wonderful lecturer. I have always been terrible at math, but she explained things in a way that made sense and did not make you feel ashamed if you did not understand something. There is a good amount of homework but if you don't procrastinate you'll be fine.
Dr. Beverly is hands down the best professor I have had at UM. If you want an A, you have to work for it, but what is covered in class is the material you have to know. She is always open to questions and engages the class to make sure everyone understands the material. She is also very accessible and helpful outside of class. Take her if you can!!
I chose to take MTH 141 with Professor Beverly because of all the good reviews, but she didn't live up to the hype for me. She's a nitpicker when it comes to grading your exams (stingy with partial credit), very strict about attendance, and tough to get in contact with when you reach out for help.
I too took Joy Beverly because of her good reviews but she did not live up to that standard. Due to Covid-19 she did not teach the lectures, instead we taught ourselves through animations. She will belittle students and is very hard to reach when help is needed.
Calc 1 was the hardest class ever. Dr. Beverly explained things well, but it's up to you to do all the hw she assigns (sometimes takes hours) and get help from her outside of class if you are struggling. She is happy to meet with you and genuinely wants you pass the class. Group quizzes every week helped. Be prepared to spend lots of time to get A.
Dr. Beverly is my favorite professor that I have had at UM. She's super approachable and always willing to help her students succeed. There's a lot of homework involved with thee class, but problems are very similar to what you'll see on her exams. I liked her so much that I took her again for MTH 141! All around a great professor and person.
Prof. Beverly is a reliable choice. Content is easy, notes are done on PowerPoints that are posted. Tough teacher (grading wise too) but she has higher expectations because she wants us to know the material. Attendance is MANDATORY Be prepared to get called on in . Overall you are definitely going to learn but she makes it easy to get an A for sure
You have to work hard for the A. Many people may say she's hard but that's because they don't put in the effort. Go to class because c she gives extra credit, and do ALL the homework because that's what the exams are on. She's a hard but fair grader, but also take into account that the nature of this class is hard.
While Prof. Beverly seems to be sweet, her class was not whatsoever. Be prepared to be called on when you haven't even raised your hand, for a lot of homework that won't be anything like the test or quiz, and to pay for tutors because she won't answer the same question twice (even if she didn't discuss it in your class). Do not recommend it!
She forces you to pay attention by calling on you randomly. At first I hated it but I learned to love it, I definitely would have slacked if she didn't. If you have questions she will answer them and the exams are easier than the homework, so if you mostly understand that then you're set.
Dr. Beverly is one of the best professors I have had at the University of Miami. She was very accommodating especially during this challenging semester. There is a lot of homework through WebAssign but most MTH professors use that. Her tests are fair, but a little challenging. Great professor and if you go to office hours you will be fine.
I do not understand these positive reviews about Professor Beverley. She is very knowledgeable, but belittles students who do not catch onto her fast-paced lectures. She is hard to reach and can be rude and intimidating. I took her class over a 1000 miles away from campus and she cut me no slack, especially during a pandemic. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!
This class was online but I can honestly say that if you are already good at math then youll be fine. Shes very clear in all her lectures and is very organized and you can understand her very well. She cares about her kids but grades a little harsh. She can be little passive aggressive, especially if you dont know the answer. You will learn tho.
She is a very knowledgeable math professor. However, she is not compassionate and has an attitude problem. I was deceived by the good comments on this site. She gives about 20 points of extra credit but her class is still not worth it as she grades exams very harshly. Take only if you already know the content very well or you want to ruin your GPA.
Heavy on PowerPoint, doesn't have vid records in case you miss something- online difficulties/time zone problems, & felt some hostility at times-not sure if that's her attitude. It could be because it wasn't in-person but for me it seemed as if most my learning was done on YouTube except I had to pay for a course that is taught better online free.
One of the hardest teachers I have ever taken a class with. She is very rude and not understanding. I am very good at math, I took AP and IB math all 4 yrs of highschool and did very poorly in her class. She is a very hard grader and doesnt give much extra credit. Also randomly calls on you in class so must be actively listening and have camera on.
Do yourself a favor and DO NOT take her class. She is rude, intimidating, and belittles students who do not catch on to her faced paced lectures. Easily the nastiest professor I have ever had. Makes material and tests WAY harder than it needs to be. Gets a literal thrill from failing students. TRUST ME, pick another professor at all costs!!!!
Her lectures are lacking and they do not include all the information needed to complete the homework. You will however have enough time to complete it, although it may be with the help of a tutor. She can be quite rude and unaccommodating to students needs. Her cold calling is nerve wracking and exams must be taken at the library, which is a pain.
She makes her students feel retarded. Plain and simple.
This class was TRASH. Her online homeworks are almost impossible to get right, since the program only accepts a very specific answer. Oh, and guess what, she doesn't give back points after it incorrectly grades it! gg
Her assignments were scientifically engineered by a monkey. She's rude. Don't take her unless you absolutely have to. I got through 107, but 108? Not a chance.
THIS CLASS IS IMPOSSIBLE
THIS IS BY FAR THE WORST PROFESSOR AT UM. Her lectures are terrible, she explains nothing that are on homeworks or exams, she expects you to learn everything on your own not thinking students have other classes than hers. Test averages are below 65% every time. She is extremely rude and a horrific teacher!!! DO NOT TAKE HER!
Im not AMAZING at calc but she explains well. She makes class engaging and everyday stay after for extra help. She seems strict but its the stupid math dept rules that make her seem rude and harsh she's a sweet lady and cares about students. Always helps me when I need it but you NEED to make the effort to get the help. Lots of hw but doable. STUDY
THE WORST PROFESSOR EVERRRRRRR DO NOT TAKE HER!
I failed calculus last semester but having Dr. Beverly as my professor this semester helped me gain my confidence in math back. She clearly gives you an idea whats on the exams and gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit. The final is departmentalized but her class prepares you really well for it
The only reason I did alright was because I taught myself all the material. Her lectures are mandatory plus they are pointless because you learn nothing. The homework is actually impossible. Her exams are similar to the study guides but thats the only plus. She is a tough grader. take someone else if given the chance
she's a strict prof but she is very good at explaining concepts and giving tools for you to succeed. there's 20 points of EC which help a lot. final was a little rough.
She has a lot of rules which makes you feel like you're in middle school. Attendance is mandatory, hands must be visible during in person tests and she has a strict seating chart. Kinda unnecessary and makes class unenjoyable.
She's super funny and is a really good teacher. However, she's an extremely hard grader. Tests are nothing like the pretests, homework is pretty hard. In order for me to get a high B in his class I would have to go to tutoring hours 2x a week, do all the hw, do the pretest 3x. so LOTS of studying. gives ec chances (once) & drops 2 quiz grades
One of the worst professors at UM. If you can take literally ANYONE else do it!! This class made me miserable and she assigned so much homework over break it's ridiculous. I taught myself everything, went to tutoring and did extra homework problems and still struggled.
Dr. Beverly is strict, but she is actually a very good teacher, and goes through the concepts in an organized way, using powerpoints. The resources she gives to her students is amazing, including class notes, worksheets, and hand written solved answers to the review guides. The only thing I didn't like is that she doesn't record lectures. Take her!
Dr. Beverly is a great teacher. Her class was fairly easy. All I did was complete homework assignments, the exam reviews and study. The homework assignments are usually easy and reflect upon her lecture examples. The reviews also help for the exams as well. I guarantee that if you look over lecture notes, HW and the review you will get easy A or B.
Dr. Beverly was a really wonderful teacher. She has specific/strict rules, but this is only because she deeply cares about seeing her students succeed. She applies in-depth explanations when you email her a question, and she knows every single one of her students' names. Her lectures are very engaging she often lets classes out a few minutes early.
I really enjoyed Dr. Beverly's class, so much that I am taking her again next semester. At first she seemed a little stuck up, but she lightened up as the semester progressed and is an amazing prof. She explains things very well and answers any question clearly.
I ended up doing good in the class but struggled a lot. Lectures were fast and asking questions was difficult. Her slideshows were horrible so crucial you take good notes.Lets you drop quizzes. Office hours are helpful. HW was time-consuming but not super difficult.
Dr. Beverly truly cares about her student, and although she is strict, as long as you are respectful you will be fine. Tests have a little more difficult problems, but easier than the reviews. I highly recommend always going to class, especially since it is mandatory. As long as you don't get on her bad side you will be fine.
She is an amazing teacher but expect hard tests and she is such a tough grader. Mess up one sign and that's -5 points. But you will definitely learn a lot!! homework is usually pretty light and her class is super engaging. Honestly i really liked her and did well on her tests but some people failed the first 2. but then she made the last one easy.
Super hard class but Dr. Beverly is a great prof. Class feels sorta like a middle school class as she has a lot of class rules but she is a great teacher and has great energy
my queen. i suck at math, but she helped so much. group quizzes (!!), some homework (with multiple attempts allowed), and thorough grading. super helpful, sweet, and always accessible/open inside and outside of class. i
I had Dr. Beverly for both MTH 140 and MTH 141. She scared me the first week of 140. She's strict but also nice and caring. Her tests are harder than the other 140/141 teachers but that makes the final pretty easy. Individual and group quizzes, tests, WebAssign homework, and extra credit for attendance as well as the class completing evaluations.
Dr. Beverly is by far the best professor I have ever had. She makes sure you really understand the material and she is always willing to help with anything.
Dr. Beverly is awesome! She is a great lecturer and cares so much about her students. She makes the effort to learn everybody's names and engage with everyone. Her tests are pretty straightforward as long as you follow her lectures and understand your homework. She is always willing to help and make sure her students are learning. Definitely take!
Dr. Beverly is the best math professor I've had at UM so far! She really cares about her students, gives fair exams, and easy group quizzes. She expects all her students to participate in class and takes pride in making sure she knows everyone's names. She also gets really excited about her students' accomplishments in general at UM! 10/10!
He tortures students with unbearable math questions and his lectures are a disgrace. There are no possible words to describe how detrimental this professor is to the GPA of students. University of Miami is a prestigious institution and this teacher drags the reputation of this outstanding school down.
I don't recommend Beverly. I would choose any other professor. Please beware before taking her class.
Her lectures are based on PowerPoint which is a hard way to understand and visualize math work. She talks more through the problem rather than working it out. She is very understanding, but, sometimes rambles on stuff unrelated to the subject. The math is equivalent to the first semester of high school calculus.
I have dyslexia and she was not sensitive to that. She embarrassed me in class bc I have a different way of showing my work. There's no TA and her office hrs are 15 min limited times slots on zoom, not for help w/math. She had work sessions right after class but I had another class then. It was unfair to offer that w/o finding time for everyone.
I got an A, but it was too much effort and impacted my performance in other classes. She gives too much work for kids that are not math majors and need to fill their math requirement. She's untrusting of her students and acts like a drill sargent. Also, be prepared to teach yourself a lot because she is not great at explaining concepts.
Just don't take her! She'll ruin your GPA!
Never again!
Take someone else if you can. I took this course last year. She is not understanding of kids who struggle with Math. Her office hours were so limited.
I highly recommend avoiding taking Dr. Beverly. Her slideshows are unclear, she was condescending when I met with her, and made me nervous to ask questions. Also, her rules during test taking are RIDICULOUS. She tried to flag me for cheating one time because I guessed on a question and got it right. The same thing happened to my classmate.
extremely tough grader and not very open to hearing follow up questions asking about her grading on tests
Very nice lady, can seem intimidating at first but takes the time to learn her students. Does do group quizzes which is really helpful and tests are hard but fair. Prepares you really well for everything and can tell she cares for her students.
Do not take!!!!
the homework is literally impossible to do and she is an extremely tough grader. definitely avoid
Don't listen to the bad reviews- Dr. beverly is an amazing professor. She takes the time to answer questions and explain things again in her lessons. I'm terrible at math but her engaging lectures and group quizzes saved me. She's super accessible outside of class too. If you actually show up and put in the effort, you can totally pass the class
Just don't take her. AVOID at literally all costs. GPA killer is an understatement. She made me absolutely dread coming to class every day.
She makes you doubt the meaning of having an education. This is a calculus class, but the most difficult part of the exams is never calculus but simplifying calculations. You can get 100% of the calculus part on exam questions correct, but can still end up losing half of the points because the questions are insanely complicated to simplify.
Avoid her like the plague! She is militant and untrusting of students. Who burned her? She makes her students hate math. It's like she wants to fail kids. She berates kids who are not good at Calculus. I taught myself from the book because she barely teaches. This course took up too much of my time away from other courses.
Dr. Beverley is a decent professor but some of the material that was on quizzes and exams was not taught in class or even in the textbooks. Same for the homework.
Dr. Beverly is, although stern, a very effective professor. She gets to know her students but doesn't tolerate disrespect. She teaches thoroughly and offers many opportunities to get help outside of class. She definitely cares about her students and their success, just don't get on her bad side. She also does A LOT of group quizes which was great.
definitely cares about her students but well she's very condescending if you're not someone with a strong calculus background. she'll continue to say that maybe you shouldn't be in that class but for most people its literally a requirement. TYRANT during exams, does not trust students to an extreme level. AVOID HER. reviews are a lie. AVOID!!!
If you are a freshman taking MTH107 as a requirement, DO NOT TAKE HER! She is the hardest and rudest professor at UM. I took her in 2020, and it is now 2024 and I just needed to come here to say that I have never had a professor as awful as her. She's fails half the class. I had to appeal my grade to admin bc she screwed me over so badly.
First of all, if your advisor is trying to tell you to do 140/141, don't. Just do 160. Dr. Beverly helps her students understand the material but will not be flexible with grading and adheres very strictly to the syllabus, even with extenuating circumstances. She isn't awful, but if you decide to take 140/141, take someone else if possible.
I took Dr. Beverly for MTH107- best decision I made. She cold calls during every class, which keeps you on top of everything that she discusses in each lecture. She is available outside of class+wants all of her students to succeed. If you want to get a good grade in this class+are willing to put in the effort, she is the best professor for you.
Dr. Beverly has a strict teaching style, but her lectures and group quizzes are engaging. With effort, you can pass the class. Unstuck study helped me prep for exams.
I took Calc in high school so I did remember most of the material but Professor Beverly is probably one of the best professors for Calc I at Miami. I heard bad things from some of my friends about their professors (they were also taking calc for the second time). Very good at explaining how to do problems. Favorite professor of my semester for me!
She cares and wants everyone to do well in her class. She makes sure everyone is paying attention by asking people to participate. She was available outside of class and I loved going to her math Mondays! I appreciate how she puts a lot of effort into each and every student to make sure they are successful.
Happy I passed, but it messed up my GPA. Kids did well but she is a very tough grader and lowkey like does not teach at all, all the good ratings are math nerds
Joy creates a tense, unwelcoming environment, often calling out students in a condescending way. Classes cover few math problems, with most time spent on irrelevant tangents or moving slowly due to cold calling out students. She shows little care for student success, making it hard to engage or learn effectively. Avoid her class if possible.
The class is pretty hard because the tests are difficult, no curves. the lowest test is matched to the final test grade. She is a really nice person outside of the class but not as much in class. if she thinks you're dumb she wont be very nice to you; not much slack. hard to do well without having taken calc before. got rounded up from a bad final.
Going to math mondays saved me. She truly cares about students and goes above and beyond to help you in whatever situation you are in. Has a lot of resources and is truly a wonderful and kind professor as long as you demonstrate the same respect for her. She is also very understanding and drops your two lowest quizzes, also most quizzes are group
I think I might be in love with her. Very informative and cares about students, wish I could've had her for the first half of mth140 as well.
Dr. Beverly is fair and explains concepts well. She teaches simple concepts in class but then you have to teach yourself the difficult concepts for hw. Take advantage of the camner tutoring center!! tests are 80% of your grade!! This class does require time and effort but there are a lot of resources available and you can get a good grade.
math department makes the exams and homework for cal1 and lower, but she explains she has chosen the easiest questions. People that fail were just never going to pass the class. Copied and paste quizzes from HW. She is amazing, I did not make a review earlier so her class wouldn't fill up quickly. Math Mondays, office hours, she is there for you.
Cares a lot about her students but is very strict on attendance and small rules like wearing a hoodie for exams. She cold calls a lot, but she makes the questions are easy to answer so it's nothing to worry about.
Dr. Beverly is an amazing professor! I'm taking her for MTH 107 and next semester for MTH 108. She really cares about her students and wants them to do well. She does cold call but they're easy questions and you can always pass. You will have to study as it can be a challenging course but she is the best professor to take it with.
She didn't explain well because she is always asking questions to students. Might be rude sometimes and is a tough grader she looks at every detail. Some quizzes were in groups which was fun because you could work with other people. Attendance is mandatory. Exams are worth a lot and are kind of different from study guides.
Dr. Beverly is a great professor! She explains concepts very well and is happy to go over problems that you are unclear about. She is caring and likes to inform students of fun events happening on campus. She cold calls, but not in a condescending way. The tests are fair and straightforward if you pay attention in class and do the homework.
good teacher! calls on you during class. sometimes talks a lot not about math and lets the class time get away from her. the type of teacher who more so explains a slideshow than to do the math herself, so its your preference. tests are similar to study guide
I really like Dr. Beverly. She's very helpful if you pay attention and attend class. I wish I put in more effort but she really wants students to succeed. She's very clear and helpful with many tough topics. With not a lot of good professors here, she's definitely the best one. Highly recommend.
Not considerate of personal family matters at all preventing you from attending an exam. Ended up having to fly back to Miami for an exam with her from across the country and fly right back to be by my family member's side during their final moments.
Def a hard subject but Mrs. Beverly is so good at explaining all the concepts and offering additional help outside of the classroom. Tests are definitely hard but very similar to study guide.
