Practical, cheerful, interesting anecdotes to supplement lectures, recommended for first time biology student as she'll keep you on track.
She's tough! Several tests based PURELY off lecture notes. Tested on application and understanding, not just memorization of terms.
tough! get a tutor right away!
SO EASY. The easiest science class you can take at Century. Use correct spelling or she'll dock you points. Very straigh forward, willing to work with students. Don't buy the books--- they are hardly used.
One of the funnest teachers I had ever had! Very good sense of humor, but don't get her going on drive thru's!!! Great class!
Loved the class and the teacher was so easy to talk to and get along with. I'd take it again for sure!
i TOTALLY recommend her!! the class itself consists of 1 page labs (EASY), helping the nature center (EASY) and some exams and quizes (reread her notes she gives you and its EASY) she explains well and gives good notes and shows a movie every friday. TAKE HER CLASSES
Get prepared to take PARAGRAPHS of notes until your hand falls off. I think she's bored of teaching. She had NOTHING to offer as a professor. Her lectures were BORING and her class was basically ALL notes with not much discussion or clarity about them. This is the second worst professor I've taken at Century College in my two years there!
Her class consisted of copying notes at a very fast pace, she doesnt give much time to ask questions and her tests are extremely hard. She likes to trick people on the tests. I do not recommend her at all.
Lectures, labs, and tests do not coincide at all. Lectures consist of a lot of unclear notes, tests contain questions that were not addressed clearly in lecture or book. Labs were often out of sync with lectures. I would not recommend this teacher for a novice science student.
I am currently in the class and I have such a hard time taking notes and understanding what she means. Her lectures don't help with the tests or quizes. I tried reading the book and that didn't even help. The labs don't match what we are talking about either. I am so confused when I leave her lectures.
She goes on tangents that are completely off topic. Before taking this class I was all for helping the planet now I think "screw that" every time I hear about "helping" ecology
I dunno what to think about her. Once you figure out that reading the book will only confuse you...I think you are good to go. She gives out a review sheet before the tests which has everything you need to know so I did pretty well on it. Her stories are interesting, but sometimes you write a LOT. She is strict but somehow still nice. it's weird
very easy going, and good at explaining content. She made an environmentalist out of me!
Always interesting stories, if you need help ASK and she'll always explain things, attend lab and lecture and you won't have to use the book. Not an easy class but definately worth taking it from this prof.
This class is really easy if you go to every one of the lectures. Don't even bother buying the book. All of the test questions are answered through the lecture notes. You just have to copy down what she writes. Minimal use of flashcards is a good idea for this class.
Very easy teacher once you learn her style. Get ready to take some fast notes... it's ok tho because you will never use the book. Grades on a curve so that's a plus. Has some interesting stories too.
This class is very very hard!! All you do is take notes and go to lab nothing ever connects...I spend hours on end studying for tests and quizes only for her to word everything wayy diff and make no sense at all!! Do not take this class if you dont have to..trust me on this. make a study group and get a tutor if you want a decent grade!
She is hard. She is what you call a tricky professor where she likes to words things in an odd way on exams. If you miss one day in lab don't even bother showing up for the other lab days because she won't give you the full points. It's either attend 100% or receive an F for Lab. Labs are confusing. Bad Prof
hard. hard. hard. labs are weird. don't make sense
Buckthorn - Invasive Species.. That's ALL I learned in her class. Seriously she talks for hours and then you take the test and 100% of whats on the test has not been discussed even ONCE, plus we never even discussed the book ONCE. Those tests were soo hard because we NEVER talked about what was on them! Buckthrown = evil. Thanks teach
Very difficult class..Hard..PAGES AND PAGES OF NOTES.. your hand will hurt labs never made sense with class. Test were Tricky don't recommend
Got an A for Bio. She tends to embarrass students for asking questions in class. Books aren't used but I recommend it. Likes to use unfamiliar words/descriptions of materials to throw u off. I sense she enjoys being "difficult". Doesn't "challenge" for growth but intentionally ILLPREPARE you to fulfill her this agenda.
She has a great presonality. She takes pride in students failing so puts notes on the board and she's explaining at the same time. There's no way for students to write the note and take notes from her lectures. she extremely bad when it comes to students' success. I do not recomend her class to any of you students out there.
Class time wasted, tests are on material not talked about in class. No homework. Grades based on difficult tests and harshly graded papers.
All it takes to pass her class with a good (or great) grade is just write down the notes and study them. The class was not difficult, nor was she unfair. She was very available for answering questions and she goes out of her way to help students that are trying. If you want to learn, she's an awesome teacher, if you're lazy, try golf. My new fav!
I thought her class was interesting. I was my first Biology class in a long while. The quizzes and the exams are challenging. She makes the material very interesting. I would recommend her.
You will be ill prepared for further Biology courses if you take Cedarleaf. She seems as though she is against the students and does not want them to succeed. She is always very far behind in the technology world and we need to handwrte ALL of the notes from the board. Do not take her if you want to truly learn Biology.

This professor displays hand written (in pencil) notes via overhead projector. The notes are long and she talks while you write so you tend to miss a lot when writing. BRING A LAPTOP! Lab attendance she counts. She makes snippy remarks if you miss her class, even though she doesn't bother to take attendance.
Never used the book, made you copy pages of handwritten notes. You have to attend every lab or you will not get credit. I would spend hours studying for an exam only to find out that nothing on the study guide that she hands out is on the test. Made you feel like an idiot if you ask a question. I would not recommend this professor.
Be prepared to take SCORES of notes!! She is against using technology. The worst part is she lectures while you take notes, so you miss a lot of what she is saying! I wish she would use technology so we could download the notes, then use them to understand the lectures. Her tests are difficult, very wordy. I did not enjoy the class at all.
In order to succeed, students must attend classes. She gives pages upon pages of handwritten notes that are only available in class. Notes and book readings are a must if a student is to succeed. She can be rude and easily irritated at questions. An 'A' is not out of reach, but different study methods are needed to succeed.
I loved her! If you are competent and can take notes and pay attention...you will do great. In other words, be a freaking student and try, you will do fantastic. She has a great sense of humor and a great personality. Her test/quizzes are very easy, she hand feeds the answers to her students through her notes..how can anyone fail her class?
In order to succeed, students must attend classes. BE A STUDENT, THAT'S WHY YOU R THERE. She gives pages upon pages of handwritten notes that are only available in class. Notes and book readings are a must if a student is to succeed. An 'A' is not out of reach, but different study methods are needed to succeed.
Make sure to look over all the notes and read in the book. She will test you on everything weather she teaches it or not.
I learned to much from this amazing woman. She is so compassionate about what she teaches and if a student shows interest in what she has to say, she will show respect back. Wonderful teacher. Fair tests; fun field projects. If you have to take a science with a lab take Field Bio with Joy Cedarleaf! Love her!
Great professor! Makes everything so clear and tests you on exactly what she lectures on! Even if you don't attend class, reading the text book will teach you exactly what she does, her notes are very understandable. Tests are fairly easy if you know your material, know definitons and study your notes! DEF. recommend it. super awesome labs too!
Professor was rude and unhelpful. When students tried to ask a question, she refused to answer, told them to look it up, and made the student feel stupid. Her tests make no sense and she will not clarify if you ask for help. Test questions are on obscure material that was not covered in class or in the book. Lectures for her are story time.
Worst teacher i have ever had. Her quizzes and Exams have nothing to do with the notes you take in class. When you have a question about something or do not understand something she is no help at all. She tells students they should have been paying attention or that they need to look it up and find the answer on there own time. NO Technology.
Cedarleaf is a great teacher. She does not hand you information to recite back to her on tests. She expects you to use yor brain and truly comprehend what she is teaching. She wants to help but will only help if asked. I had no desire to take this class and ended up applying it to my everyday life becaus that's what she asks you to do.
If your a person that like to hand write notes, this is the class for you. she will always have an open arm to help you or point you off the right way, overall her quz and test are right off the in class notes or in the book. if you study youll pass. she likes to tell life stories and show movies for the most part. i liked her, just doing her job.
Joy is a very nice and helpful instructor. Her quizzes and tests are right off the notes you do from the lecture. If you do not understand something referring to the textbook helps and if it still does not make sense joy is willing to help. Overall I thought her class was interesting and is a good biology instructor.
Tests and quizzes are difficult if you are not smart in Biology. Don't buy the book - all test questions are from the notes however the tests and quizzes still are pretty difficult. There are 3 exams during the semester (50 questions) and 6 quizzes (25 q's) and 2 small papers. Show up to lab every time and get extra credit. Interesting class
Attendance is mandatory in this class. All of her notes are hand written and she does not use any technology whatsoever making it difficult to know your grade. In class is the only place you can get her notes and her tests don't correlate very well. Her lab test was impossible even when I only missed 1 lab. This is a must study/focus type of class.
All of you saying her tests don't correlate with her tests and quizzes are FALSE. I took her notes word for word and studied with note cards and got a 99% in her class. Attend class, get the notes, study and do the study guides and you will be fine. She's passionate about her subject and I think that helps immensley. I'd take her classes again
had to copy hand written notes that were shown on a projector as she discussed them. It is a ridiculous amount of notes. Also if you stop to ask questions and discuss with her, the notes don't stop. I would not take her class again.
She gave about 25 points of extra credit for my class, so getting an A wasn't that hard. I didn't show up for class, just copied notes from a friend, but made a bunch of note cards. The tests contained all of the notes, so you basically have the test in your notes. Wasn't too hard, but it was a lot of procrastination studying.
This class was challenging, but I believe that if you work hard and pay attention in class, you will do just fine. I don't think it is the professor that causes students to fail. Success is based on how determine one is. I enjoyed her class. She is an amazing professor because she is passionate with her teaching. You must be determined to do well.
I'm taking biology 1020 right now. She's old fashioned. There are 6 quizes, 2 exams, 2 article papers (very easy), 1 final lab exam, and 1 final exam. All we do in class is take notes on the projector and she tells you these word definitions and sometimes give examples. Lab exam is tough. If you're a good self studiertest go for it. Ifurnotgoodluc
Great course for biology. The lab exam was by far the hardest test.
If you attend her class, you should pass the course . Don't bother with the text book. Spend your time looking at her notes and take good notes. Her test questions are based on lecture and some examples that she talks about. Overall, she is a great teacher & always ask questions. If you're willing to do your best, you should pass her class.
Tests were tough and based completely on lectures. I took advantage of office hours and got to know her throughout the semester. She is nice when you get to know her. If you make flashcards of every note you take in class and memorize them, you will do well.
If you don't like science in general, it will be difficult to pass. There is A LOT of notes. Write down all of them because its going to be on the test. Also write down examples because they will help studying for the test. Ask a lot of questions if you don't get it. She will explain. Lab exam is one of the hardest test that I have ever taken.
If you are not good with science then it will be hard to pass. She has you take A LOT of notes. Take the note! They are needed for the tests. Make flash cards or go on quizlet to help you study. The lab exam was the hardest tests that I have ever taken. Study everything for the lab exam. Ask questions if you have them. She will answer them.
I also took BIOL 1020-16 with her because I enjoyed her so much. She is very helpful if you are prepare and actually try in her classes. If not, good luck.
If you're someone who loves the naturalistic side of biology this is the teacher for you. If you're going into Healthcare choose another professor. Loved her passion for the environment and nature cool person. Can't pass without notes from lecture. Use flashcards directly from lecture notes.
I took her twice. That was a mistake on my part. Her notes are handwritten; she doesn't use D2L; tests are very tough and most of her notes don't cover the content on the test. Pay attention to what she says during her lecture. I would not take her again. She's a very nice teacher, but isn't there for her students to pass.
She is an amazing teacher and truly wants her students to succeed. you have to put in the work to get a good grade, but come on that's how it should be. do not miss any days because she gives hand written notes and the tests come directly from those notes! I would highly recommend her!
Prepare for LOADS of note taking. Tests can be tough, so make sure you study study! She can be a bit uptight, but if you need help she is there for you. A plus is that if you're having trouble on a test she will give you hints for the answer.. Just ask! Also talks about her personal life which gives an interesting touch to lectures.
Joy is a great person, she is passionate about Bio and is there to help if you need it but totally old school! All the notes you need for tests are shown in class on projector. Study straight from class notes and you will do fine, a lot of memorizing so flashcards and quizlet. Get to know her, she is great.
OLD school professor! Make sure you get ALL of the lecture notes as they are essential to your passing. She very obviously cares about the subject. Make sure you have a good pen/pencil every day - LOTS of notes. Test and quiz questions come directly from the notes.
You would think it be an easy class, but it is not. Lectures go fast and barely anytime to actually grasp an understanding of a concept during class. She is not very clear and tells to many unnecessary stories. She is passionate about Biology, but doesn't know how to teach. Her quizzes are directly from the notes, but worded awfully.
All she does is lecture. But the tests are word for word from the notes
Professor Cedarleaf is incredibly passionate about her subject, and really loves to share anecdotes from her past biology work and talk about current issues. If you show interest and respect for her she will respect you. Class is very easy as long as you attend, pay attention, and turn assignments in on time. One of my favorite teachers.
She is a very nice person, but when it comes to labs she is strict for the rules. Do not drink water, or eat in the lab. Her tests use terminology that we never were exposed to before the actual test/quiz. I wish I could say I liked the class, but she makes you feel bad for breathing in air. Lot of go green advocacy. Respect it, but do not preach.
Very unorganized notes, doesn't post lecture notes on d2l, test and quizzes don't correlate with notes in lectures. I wouldn't recommend this teacher for this class.
Cedarleaf is definitely a tough teacher to get used to. But as long as you listen, and write down all her notes, (you'll definitely need to study) the tests are nearly word for word from her notes. Labs a fun. But the lab practical you do not get your notes from other labs and need to know what you are looking at. Wonderful teacher In my opinion.
Joy is a great teacher. I have taken two different classes with her both biology concepts/1020 and field biology. The people that gave her a poor rating clearly didn't show up to class or participate in class. All you have to do is take notes and listen to her in class, if you do this you will get an A for a final grade. Over all a great teacher.
I am in her biology 1020, things were going really well at first but as of latley her attitude has changed a bit and she's become very negative. It's a drag going to class and she's very intimidating and strict, but nice if you talk to her outside of class. But her lectures have opened my eyes to today's environmental issues.
She is one way or the highway. Shes a good teacher just isn't very empathetic of much and isn't clear on some subjects. The tests are not what you expect so think outside the box. The tests are based on a lot of the lecture and videos. She doesn't let you see your grades unless u can see her ONLY during her office hours and so its inconvenient.
She's a really cool person, but I didn't like her as a teacher. I think she gets frustrated by students very easily, and if you don't connect with her/do well she won't like you or help you. I think if you asked for help directly she'd be more willing to give it, but I struggle with that. She knows her stuff, but doesn't communicate it best.
Pretty lecture heavy, but a good class. She doesn't post ANYTHING on D2L, which is pretty annoying... not the end of the world, she does post final grade on e-services, but it would be nice to know. Tests are pretty much straight for notes. Lab final was brutal. Enjoyed taking her class, and would definitely take something from her again.
Lots of note taking Words quizzes weird Kind of rude
62 pages a full semester. she summarizes the notes well ,,all you have to do is read her notes go back to text if you missed anything and you are good to go.
Very nice lady! Lots of lecture notes but tests are almost word for word what is in the notes. Show up everyday, take notes, study those notes a bit and there's no reason you shouldn't get an A
VERY LECTURE HEAVY. She's a great teacher and if you need her help she will help. Study for the exams and read your notes.
joy is not that bad but you do have to show up to class for the notes because she doesnt post anything on d2l. and when you want to check your grades you have to go to her office hours. study the notes and you will do good the text book is more for reference and more information, dont buy the blue kit just get tweezers somone else might have it.
Didn't get the textbook and did pretty well in the class. Lectures are based on vocabulary. The class was laid back, watched movies and had field labs. Joy has you do two written article summaries and many lab reports, make sure you double check your grammar. You will lose points on grammar.
I really enjoyed my class with Joy, I'm not the smartest but she was a great fit for me. There were 6 quizzes and 3 exams which were all straight from the notes taken in class. I don't recommend purchasing the textbook as I didn't use it, but you may want to for reference or elaboration. She doesn't post notes or grades on D2L.
I've taken her Biology concepts class twice. The final lab exam is extremely difficult. I felt like a lot of the questions weren't covered from notes and that she tries to trick you, but luckily I got an A this time around. Lecture heavy! And you have to wait in line after class for quiz & exam scores. Be prepared to study your butt off!
She doesn't do anything online. You can't check your grade unless you go in during her office hours and if you aren't there for those times then you're kind of out of luck which I don't think is reasonable. Quizzes and tests make up your grade. Little to no homework. Every class is notes.
Joy was ok when class first started but as time went on she became very mean. She was rude to students talking to them as if they should already know the answer to the question they are asking. Her lab was really fun but she didnt u derstsnd when others had personal issues and need to set a time to retake a quize.
She was a great teacher and really went in depth with all of the material. Very test heavy and labs are very important
Shes really passionate about biology so if youre into that, youll love her. However I hate biology so it made it really difficult to get into it. She doesnt post grades, you have to go to her office hours and if youre a full time worker and student, you wont be able to go. Shes nice but is a poor teacher
Joy is THE BEST!! Her background is in wildlife bio, so her lectures include her knowledge and experience from working in our national parks. Study her lecture notes and read the chapters that coincide (they are not that long) you will do great. 2 papers (1 page long) 6 quizzes, 3 exams (incl. non-cumulative final) and 1 lab final (HARD).
Joy is a nice but is very blunt and direct. She does not use D2L, so she expects you to see her for every test result during her office hours. If you do go during office hours it is hard to find her because she's not in her office often after the first half hour. Assigns papers throughout the semester and will dock points if you miss a comma.
Graded on three main tests must be there for all classes to understand but also must read all of the book to do even remotely well study days before
Excellent choice. If you show up to labs and at least have a decent knowledge of the material, you will pass. An A will require studying outside of class. Good lectures that draw on real world experiences of everyone in class. Labs are a peace of cake and a large portion of your grade. She will help you with making up credit/points. Good choice.
Show up & do the work and you'll do just fine. Joy is very passionate about biology witch is admirable. But she often has a rude attitude to students. Most of the semester was spent with her lecturing in a very hostile tone. Not always approachable, but she can be nice when she's one-on-one. Never uses D2L and limited office hours.
Nothing is online. To find out grades for anything you have to meet with her one on one during her VERY limited office hours. Shes a nice person, but its just difficult for someone who likes seeing their grades and using online technology. She can have a bit of a hostile tone sometimes but she is very passionate and very kind one on one
Joy can come off as very rude at first, but if your're polite she will be polite. Her tests are no joke and worded to mess with you. You are graded almost completely off tests. Some extra credit but not much. Ask questions, see tutor if needed, and show up to class and you will pass. Will pretty much give you questions on tests if you ask for help.
I like her strict approach to things. She gives clear guidelines about her class. Forces you to go to her office hours to find out what you got on quizzes which kinds of shames you if you did bad(which I didn't). Passionate about the subject. The class itself requires you to remember alot of definitions, she grades you fairly.
Tip: Don't try to memorize her material, rather try to understand the concepts of the material. Her quizzes and exams are pretty tough and her notes only help so much. You have to go to her office hours for grade updates, and if you are busy during those times then you are out of luck. She tends to be hostile if you don't listen during lab/lecture
didn't learn anything. showed up for 10 mins just to go back home and write useless lab reports for a grade.
I want other students to know that this professor is highly knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. She is always willing to go the extra mile to help students understand the material and is very approachable. I highly recommend taking a class with this professor if you have the opportunity. Make sure you participate in the discussion
