not very easy, but learned a whole lot!
this teacher acts like she's god's gift to the art world and I doubt she's exhibited anything in 20 years.
She's ok. I don't know how to compare with other teachers/ As long as you get better at drawing that's what matters
I would probably recommend her . I think she is better if you already are someon good at drawing
This is another prof. who makes my top five list. She pushes hard but the end result is worth it. If you cant handle constructive crit. dont take her. If your serious about art sign up before the class is full.
Man, i love this class....the assignments are so open-ended. The work is so fun, and rewarding. She is very laid back and interested in what you are doing. Less time lecturing would be good though
I had her a few semesters ago - Spring 2003 - but she was one of the best drawing professors I ever had. She is like the martha stewart of drawing. Great projects and fun class.
Well i gave her good ratings, and I got an A in her class, but being fairly good at drawing made this a ridiculousely boring class. Don't take her if you have talent. Plus once she opens her mouth, she would talk for half the class about stupid crap I already knew, but the explanations were good.
This is in response to the previous comment made by someone on march 9, 2005. Not to sound as arrogant as the owner of the said entry, but I am also talented and i DID NOT by any means find this class boring. She gives excellent assignments that can be taken as far as you like. These are fun assignments if you know what to do with them. Her explana
for being a little intimidated by drawing, i found joy's class to be very helpful and inspiring, with fun assignments. and after a negative experience with another professor with pastels, our pastel final for joy's class was refreshing.
Joy was amazing and always had fantastic shoes. I loved her class and probabaly grew the most as an artist.
Loved her! Did some of my best work in her class. She could tell when you were bullsh*tting her though when it came to explaining your work ;)
She was a good instructor, but very dry. I never felt there was any challenge in her classes.
If you want a teacher to mathematecally suck the life out of art, play favorites, act immature and catty, then take Joy Flynn. In Joy's class you'll do piles of hundreds objects, for every project, and is more time consuming than educational, she does not grade on how well you draw, i would not recomend her.
Class was dry could have used more comment on completed work more class participation. You are not encouraged to praise others work, instead you just simply comment on composition. critique was not interactive enough. Professor talks a lot. Not enough in class work time. lots of time consuming home work. good projects and ideas though.
A good teacher, and helpful. Projects can be challenging or not- depending on personal level. A lot of time has to be put into them. Overall I recommend her.
I have never hated a drawing class more. I feel like I haven't learned anything. All the projects she gives are pretty much the same. She picks favorites, and she's rude. and yes, she seems to think she's god's gift to this world. DO NOT TAKE HER! or you'll hate your life.
At first the course seemed intimidating, yet Joy was an amazing teacher. She is very helpful and understanding. I wouldn't recommend too many absenses though because of deadlines. You are allowed to submit one project late. The projects are great and you learn alot exploring different media. Yet they are very time consuming especially the final!!!
if you follow her instructions, listen and participate, do your work on time you will do great. i noticed the people who **** most are the ones who don't turn things in on time, complain about the stupidest ****, and seem to refuse to follow instructions for an assignment. there is a lot of creative room to do whatever you want.
she sucks. awful assignments, that are just time consuming. take someone else, and i'm sure you will learn more.
This woman was the most horrible professor i have ever had. her class projects where repetitive and repulsively stale. everything i made in that class i HATED. I feel like i learned nothing. this woman is a complete waste of time please stay away from her like the plague. She's useless.
Highly recommended. This class need drawing skill and lots of creativity. I saw people who have bad grade, their drawing was terrible. If you cannot draw well or don't have creativity, I don't recommend her Drawing III class.
What I learned from Joy has basically made my career so far just out of college, so iv got nothing but good things to say. she has some great tools and ideas to teach. For some reason some students don't get along with her, but that happens with almost every teacher at scad. first few projects in drawing 3 are a bit boring, but by the end its a bla
What I learned from Joy has basically made my career so far just out of college, so iv got nothing but good things to say. she has some great tools and ideas to teach. one of the best teachers i had while at scad. she taught me about art and i took her for drawing 3 and drawing on a theme and im a photo major but I loved her classes that much!! she is a great artist as well as a great teacher, take her as much as you can!
Awesome teacher. Her projects push your creativity and process. I learned and explored lots of new ways to create art- abstractly, too! Her projects assignments are cool, can be bit annoying b/c you need midway checks and step by step sometimes, but if you do what she says youll learn a lot
Drawing 3 was basically a rehash of every single 2d design class I'd ever taken. If this is required for your major, take it as early as possible and get it over with. Projects were repetitive and grueling and I learned nothing. It felt like busywork, ever day. Joy herself is very nice, but I would never recommend this class to anyone.
In regards to class content, abstract art really isn't my thing. But I understand that as artists, we must understand all types of art. Flynn herself was a great professor; she is available when you need her and great with feedback. She also gives a pretty decent amount of time to finish projects.
A difficult (as in challenging) class, but the way Joy schedules her projects forced me to learn better time management. Her projects have a ton of wiggle room, and are really quite interesting but also a little tedious
Joy Flynn's Drawing t3 is the most useful class I have taken at SCAD. I learned so much about composition and just design in general. Her projects can be tedious, and you will be working on something for her every weekend, but if you are open to her teaching style, there is a lot to be learned in this class. Highly recommend!
most of the people that gave professor flyn sad face rattings were most likely those students who dont become involved with learning and simply dont value and art education in general because i find it hard to see how anyone who is open to learning about drawing can hate her class. twas excellent. my love for drawing doubled after taking her class
I absolutely loved her class except for the abstract assignment. She is very easy to get along with, very helpful and is a fair grader.
She can be very harsh and very strict on deadlines. She is very particular about craftsmanship, especially the coversheet. She definitely has a few favorites and can be quite catty. Sometimes for smaller projects, she isn't clear about how they are marked, by quality or quantity, and that can be annoying.
Awesome Professor. Just listen to her and follow her instructions. If she thinks you've improved from Draw 100 to Draw 101, you'll get an A :)
Drawings are very time consuming but she gives a lot of time in class. She will offer help but you must ask for it. A wonderful Professor to take any drawing class with.
Great professor! If you put time and effort into your work and it shows, you'll do great. She's very helpful and always has cool new techniques to show in her demos. Very kind, classy lady.
Joy Flynn is easily among the worst professors I have ever have ever taken. While she is an awesome artist, she is a HORRIBLE professor. First, her oral and written instructions frequently contradict. Second, her input when "helping" is vague beyond use and refuses to elaborate when asked to. Finally, her projects are simply put: boring.
nice professor, who communicate well with students.
Professor Flynn has favorites and if you are not one of then then you wont do well in the class. Doesn't matter how hard you work
One of the BEST professors I've had the pleasure of taking. She is very hands on and is willing to help her students out whenever they need it. You WILL work for your grade! She grades on how well you can draw and how far you've attempted/improved. Overall, she was a fantastic teacher!
Incredibly helpful. I would recommend her completely. She is really into the idea of "fine arts." If you are a true artist who loves to explore mark marking and loves using charcoal, Flynn is the teacher for you! Worth taking kind of class thanks to her!
I hated this teacher with a passion. For someone teaching Drawing 1 to a film student I felt she expected way too much and was extremely difficult. She actually told me "if you do everything that I tell you, you will get a C" and you know what I got a C. During the midterm review her advice to me was just SCAD's tutoring program.
Professor Flynn is great. I'd recommend her to anyone needing to take Drawing II. She cares about her students both in and outside the classroom. She provides in-class tutorials for each project explaining what she is expecting with each assignment. She also gives you a "one-time late" coupon which is nice to have when workloads get stressful!
Professor Flynn is a must take while attending SCAD Savannah. Had her for Drawing 2 & On A Theme her lessons were invaluable. Flynn's technical ability for the arts (not just drawing) helped to broaden my personal media selections. She is a fair grader too, just keep your lesson in mind.
Prof. Flynn was probably the best professors I have ever had. Her class is tough, but you will learn, and improve a lot if you do the work. She is very helpful and a great person.
Flynn is rather strict in what she wants and requires, but it's all for good reason. She breaks down the fundamentals of drawing in order to explain certain things. Although she's not always extremely clear, it's mostly a matter of paying attention and asking questions. I learned so much from this class- I'd gladly take her again!
Unclear, difficult, and not all that helpful. When I first tried to sign up for her class, the only one available was an 8 am; I took it in a heartbeat. I hated every second of class.
great teacher, you will learn alot from her if you are willing to put effort and work into this class. she is demanding but reasonable, and will grade you based on your own work not compared to others. i would take her again in a heartbeat but its not a course if you are lazy!!
While her classes may not be the easiest in terms of work load, Joy Flynn is the most supportive teacher I've encountered so far at SCAD. She really cares about her students, and if you are struggling with something she will listen to you and help you to the best of her abilities - this goes beyond classwork! I highly recommend her as a professor.
Professor Flynn was extrmely difficult for me. All the drawings I did that I believed was really good (not much of a drawer) she shot them down with ease. Very unclear about what she wants with drawings and when you fill out her statements they tend to be contradicting.
Joy Flynn is an angel. She has a sense of humor but don't mess around with her. She is a fair grader and she takes the time with everyone. She has good knowledge of pigments and experimental watercolor mediums. Definitely worth taking.
Joy Flynn has been the worst professor of my college career so far and I've been to three different schools. She is very arrogant and if you forget to bring something once or twice, which happens, she acts like you don't care at all. Worst grade I every got in college and I even went to see her. That says a lot for that joke of a school!
Bad teacher, bad class, boring assignments. has favorites if you aren't her favorite you won't do well. If your a good artist and aren't her favorite you will receive poor grades. She hides mandatory assignments in emails. Lowest grade I've ever received. Has no sympathy.
Professor Flynn talks A LOT! In my drawing 1 class we would work the entire class however in Flynn's class she talks for most of the class and then we only have like a half an hour to do anything. Majority of the time she can get the point across in half the time. I learned a little but not as much as my previous drawing class. And she's tough.
1st class as a freshman, loads of work, but it thought me a lot. "Doing the minimum requirement will get you the minimum grade." Do what is told and you'll get a C on the assignment (go above and beyond for an A ). Don't expect anything to be easy, you need to put a lot of work into this class. BE RESPECTFUL. She's nice after you've taken the clas
I have had Ms. Flynn a couple times so far and she is very helpful and great person to be around. She is a wonderful teacher and although her workloads seem excessive at times, it prepares you as a better student and drawer. You will thank her in the end. I recommend this teacher to anyone.
Was in 101 with Flynn my first quarter at SCAD, will definitely be taking her again if I can. Helpful, friendly, and appreciates students going the extra mile and putting in the effort even though it's a foundations class and you're a higher skill level. Definitely going to try and take her Drawing on a Theme class! A++ professor
this is a teacher who assumes she is the only one who gives homework. too much work, not enough time for this. PLEASE CONSIDER TAKING A NOTHER CLASS
Professor Flynn is quite enthusiastic about her class, and is more than willing to spend the entire class time talking about the upcoming project, or maybe even erasers, something that's not as good as it may sound. You will spend very little, if no time at all, doing studio work in class, so expect to work on your projects as homework all the time
Professor Flynn was such a great professor to work with! She was super patient and extremely friendly. She could be a little unclear sometimes, so ask questions, but she really wants you to succeed. Her projects aren't the best, but you definitely learn time management from her class, and she grades on effort and improvement.
She's one of the nicest professors I've ever had, but her workload is very excessive and can get overwhelming. Even with diligent time management, it can still be hard to contend with. Very clear during critiques but not so clear when assigning projects, so ask questions. Likely won't take one of her classes again.
best teacher at scad. expect to work, but you'll grow so much as an artist. took her for drawing two and definitely going with her for drawing three!
Flynn is such an amazing lady and person. Don't get me wrong. But I hate her as a professor and I would never recommend her to anyone but my worst enemy. I'm literally a drawing minor and she made me dislike drawing when I was in her class. She assigns WAY too much work, expects so much, and is snarky off the bat. Really really lovely lady, though.
One of the toughest teachers I have had so far. She really pushes you to do your best and give your all. If you're up for the challenge I highly recommend her. My drawing is 10x better because of her. If you're looking for an easy class don't take her. Also super nice and personable!
You're going to get better. If that's not why you're here, then this class isn't for you, but if you are Flynn will help you get better. Just be prepared to work for it.
If you don't have much previously drawing experience or are just generally not good at drawing, DO NOT TAKE FLYNN. She doesn't help you learn new drawing skills or techniques, she just expects you to already be great at everything. She also assigns a new project almost every class and acts as if her class is the only thing you have going on in life
She's an awesome person with a great sense of humor. Be prepared to work! Her assignment instructions get lengthy and difficult to remember. I found myself re-reading them a lot to make sure I didn't miss anything. But if that doesn't bother you then you'll definitely enjoy the class. The projects are interesting and I learned a lot.
Overall, I liked the teacher. She was nice and gave okay feedback. There is a lot of homework involved in the class but, if you do it, it will help your grade a lot. I feel like I improved a lot from the start of class to now.
I would not recommend this professor for this course.
I liked Prof. Flynn. Her class was challenging, but I really liked the freedom she gave us on some of our projects. Do your homework. She assigns textbook note-taking, that is not hard at all, and is helpful for the upcoming project. Do your assignments and follow instructions and you won't have any problems in class.
You will have to buy a book, and take notes for every week. expect big projects and small assigments for almost every class. If you are not good at drawing, I wont recommend this professor to you. Although she is a really nice person and you will learn a lot about making good compositions.
She is really nice, but you have a TON of homework. She overlaps major projects with at home projects, she makes her in-class- still life's (which are hung on the wall in class) something you have to complete on your own time, it is an unreasonable amount of work.
Flynn is a very sweet woman. Understanding and fair. The main problem I had with her was that she was very unclear and confusing with assignments. Often times I'd leave class so confused as to what the homework or even what the project was about. I learned a lot in her class, that's for sure. If you follow the directions to a T you should be fine.
This is the worst class I've ever had, I wish I had left when I could during add/drop week. I've never been assigned so much homework in my life it's the most overwhelming class I've ever taken. I wouldn't recommend this for ANYONE in fact, I'd consider this class to be psychological torture.
There are really only two issues that I have with this professor. First is that her grading isn't very clear. Sometimes I would get a B on an assignment instead of the A I was expecting and she wouldn't give a clear reason as to why. Second, she heavily limits creative freedom leading to unoriginal or boring pieces of art.
I love Professor Flynn as a person. As much as her class stressed me out, I couldn't hate her because she's a kind and understanding person. Although, the class STRESSED ME OUT. The most work I've ever had in a class. Big projects & small assignments assigned every week. Projects you have to get done on your own time. Learned a lot, but struggled.
I transferred to SCAD last quarter and I was nervous about taking a drawing class when my major wasn't drawing specific. But, Prof Flynn was so encouraging and dedicated to helping to me and all the other students in my class that it made me excited to go to my drawing class. I would take her again if I had the opportunity.
Professor Flynn just doesn't shut up, on her working studio class she will lecture the first hour and a half, leaving you little to no time to work, she also behaves as her class is the only one you have, giving you insane amount of work for the next day, be prepared to skip other classes to finish it, we had 4 things due for the same class.
Her feedback and super helpful and does a nice job of stating the pro and cons of your piece. Gives a decent amount of studio time in class but still a good amount of lecturing too. Tends to pick favorites and gives a lot of homework. Also you have to check your emails and blackboard to be clear of the assignments and homework
I honestly hated her class, shes probably the worst drawing teacher Ive had so far. She just wont shut up! you barely draw. She lectues you on a bucnh of useless things and makes you go through an entire process just to get one unfinished looking still life done. Be prepared to draw the same still life over and over again.
She was not very clear about her grading. She assigned so much work you felt as if you were only taking her class alone. This class was stressful and hectic. And we had to do reading assignments for a drawing class! I learned nothing from the reading! I had to switch back to film as a major from animation because of her class! Do not take her class
Prof. Flynn is a lovely person and a good professor but she assigns a TON of work. If you aren't willing to put in a lot time and effort, I would definitely not recommend this class.
Way too much homework, enough to be worth a full semester of credits, no joke. Way way way too much course load. Do not take drawing 2 with her
Tons of homework, but a lovely person! Really long and thorough critiques, she really helps you throughout the whole process. However be prepared to rush to finish all the assignments because of time restraints. Overall, a great learning experience and very supportive environment.
Great teacher, I feel I learned a lot from her. She is very nice as well! There is a lot of homework for this class. You will always have at least 3+ hours of homework (not including projects) every weekend. Some of the homework isn't so great but some of it really helps develop your drawing skills and learn a lot about your own style!
Professor Flynn is super understanding and a really great person, but you will drown in homework. The drawings take FOREVER and they're pretty dreadful in my opinion, although, I don't think she creates the coursework. All I have to say is, I never want to work with charcoal or pastels again.
This was one of the hardest classes I've ever had to take. The directions to the projects were so complicated and vague. She grades really hard and nitpicks everything. If you didn't do the directions completely correct for a project she'll just fail you. When talking to her over email she seemed like a nice person but an awful teacher.
Flynn is the best!!! Her Drawing 3 class was one of the most enjoyable classes Ive taken at SCAD. Her grading criteria is clear and she gives good feedback. If you put effort into your projects youll get a good grade, simple as that. 10/10 would take her class again.
she's a dream of a professor one of my favorites so far!
The art professor I'm most fondest of. Took her classes in 1996 and 1997. Lessons were well structure. She made herself available for extra class time even some Saturdays. Please note the classes I took were for those who already mastered the basics. Her lessons were gear toward learning materials techniques and expanding creativity.
Joy was a fun and pleasant professor. The course is difficult, but she was always available to assist with any issues. I feel she graded us fairly based on our abilities and effort. Be sure to incorporate her critiques to show an effort and you should do well.
Professor Flynn is by far the worst professor and person at SCAD. She was extremely rude when responding to emails. She didnt teach the class what so ever. She is a tough grader even. I have only had experience in one drawing class so if you arent a strong drawer you will fail the class.
This class was a good bit of work but I wouldn't say it was hard. Just time-consuming. Although she didn't really teach the class much she responded to emails quickly and had office hours if you needed help.
Lots of work that takes lots of time but its organized fairly well. Had some videos to help us but other than that we were on our own besides emailing her any questions which she responds to pretty fast. Make sure you look at everything she provides though as she will sneak helpful tips and extra credit.
I learn a lot in this class and I understand why she picks on little things in project because she wants you to learn! MAKE SURE you watch all her video in the announcements and follow her requirements in projects, once you do you will be fine! Don't rush your projects, she knows if you didn't tried hard. Just make your best effort and u be fine!
Does not give good feedback, very lazy when it comes to giving feedback during the process of a project and rarely ever gives useful feedback on improving. Communication was ok, she can sometimes take up to days to reply to an email and sometimes just leave a reply that she doesn't understand multiple times.
You will learn and succeed in her classes. She makes sure to set you up for success and then its up to you. Professor Flynn provides so many extra opportunities to dive deeper into the information and learn even more. Sometimes she will even extend due dates and offer extra credit. Easy grader. It was a pleasure taking her class.
For your mental health, please don't take her class. Rude E-mail response, and sometimes her requirements are blurry, hard to meet her requirements. I've learned drawing for over ten years but still get low grades. She also will assign too much homework, probably will take 30 gestures sketch a week.
Joy is one of my favorite teachers at SCAD she wants you to succeed and actually understand what you are doing She understands not everyone will have the same level of skills and will normally grade your WIP for being done (100%) The Final project will get a grade based on meeting the requirements Read the lessons don't worry about a book PICK HER!
Professor Flynn is not the greatest drawing teacher. I do not think she is suited to teach online because her classes were not interesting at all and she just didn't do a great job at teaching the course. She is very nice and is always wanting to help her students though. However, I would not take her class again.
I am an online scad student in my second semester. I had a lot of issues with this teacher. she grades very strictly. she assumes you have 5 years of experience drawing realism right out of the gate. will not help you if you are online. If you can't draw realism good luck
This is the class that I lost my passion for art in. If you want to keep your sanity do not take this teacher. She is rude, she refuses to help, and she is not suited to teach in a school that costs this much money to be in. I will probably lose my financial aid now because of this teacher.
