You know nothing about art? Don't take this class. If you do, don't take it as it may ruin the structure you already have in your head. She knows what she talks about, yet she is unorganized, unclear about both the course material and assignments, and just not a good teacher.
Really enthusiastic about art, but you have to pay attention. Teaches at a higher level than most of the other profs at Foothill.
Ms. Holland's concern is helping students improve their writing,, she gives feed back to help. If u pay attention, u will become a better writer after taking her class. She has very high expectations, and cares for students a lot.
Great teacher - she was always available during office hours, and made learning fun. You have to pay attention, though. She doesn't dumb it down for the students who won't read.
Very knowledgeable, and super helpful, it's a lot of writing
Really bad professor. She does not record grades and she makes stay after class is over to continue her lecture or to give assignments back. And she is really confusing .. She does not give any extra credits and augh!!! Really bad
The exam was take-home. Class was a lot of work, but not too much stress because just mostly assignments and projects.
Teacher cares a lot and will reach out to help you
Ms Holland's lectures are unclear and confusing. There is no structure to the class, no schedule, no sense. She knows a lot about art, unfortunately she is unable to communicate that in a clear organized way. this class was all over the map. In the end i left knowing less than when i went in.
She would not give extra credit, but she did allow the entire class to re-take the first test and re-take the first assignment in Art 1. She is very reasonable and fair, although it was sometimes confusing in class. There was homework almost every week, but I have homeowk for all my teachers, I don't consider that a difficult amount of work.
Took this last quarter. I think she's new here, so not the most organized, but I learned a LOT and really liked her class.
Great class - lectures were really fun. Good teacher!
Professor speaks very, very clear (I am ESL student), perfect English to understand, good lecturer! She is sympathetic to international/ ESL students. Very good teacher, and topics are interesting/ about different visual cultures.
Amazing experience, Prof Holland is brilliant. This class meets a bunch of requirements for transfer, though, so expect plenty of mouthbreathers in the back. If you do the work, you'll get an A.
Great new prof. Super hot.
u do not want to miss classes else you just won't know what' going on... I withdrew after I missed classes and HW, knew I couldn't get a good grade, but I enjoyed the lectures when I did go, prof is dedicated and she doesn't make u memorize info, she wants u to think about the art instead. The assignments and take-home exam were low-key.
If you don't know any art her instructions are unclear, if you know art you'll have to get by with what you know. Too much demos, she doesn't really explain much during them, mostly jokes and waste time. Usually had a prepared drawing to show instead of an actual demo session, and her "demos" are very long. Skipped one of the classes requirements
LOVED the drawing class! I wish the class sessions we longer since we sometimes didn't finish. Difficult work space in that classroom was crowded but Joy made it fun, and I learned how to "sight" really, correct bad habits, just how to draw accurately from observation. It was one of the best classes I've taken this far, very good professor.
Prof. Holland offered a lot of support to get us through the online course in Canvas. The class was fun and productive because I learned to appreciate the contributions of many civilizations to society through visual culture, my art and architecture vocabulary expanded, and most importantly, I feel somewhat more confident in my writing skills.
helpful assignments, easy take-home exams, great topics in architecture, and hot hottie hot professor
This was NOT an automated online course using a digital textbook. Holland wrote all the content herself. She read each of my submissions and gave feedback on my writing. She called and SKYped with me too. This was a great instructor, very clear. This course was worth the time and effort.
Pros: good professor, always available after class, fun lectures and group quizzes, fun class with midterm "exam" that's basically a homework assignment and won't kill your grade, * cons: she's disorganized
Probably most interesting educator in my school experience. Learning is direct and meaningful with her. Takes time to explain all and treats each student fairly, and respectfully. LOVED THIS CLASS. A great professor, she makes the learning experience a priority.
ART MAJOR HERE!! I would NOT reccommend this professor to anyone who actually enjoys art. She has taken what could be and should be a fun and educational class and turned it into a bureaucratic mess. She needs to learn how to use the online classroom systems before continuing to teach online.
Last quarter online course was very interesting and challenging, and I must say that I think she is a very good teacher in terms of challenging students, and also because she is very organized and structured. I learned a lot in her course.
Amazing teacher, very helpful in the class, and lectures were fairly easy.
I keep taking her classes, each class better than last one. she is reasonable, fair and very caring, great teacher!
Don't take joy.
If you follow her guidelines for writing, you'll get an A, it's pretty straighforward, and gets really interesting once you settle into the course. She will review any written assignment for you in advance before you submit it for grade! A diligent, thoughful teacher!
Joy is a great teacher. I took her Art 1 Online class and it was really interesting. She has clear guidelines, and as long as you follow them you'll get an A. She also makes herself available for her students so there is no reason to stress about this class. Take Joy, she's awesome :)
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR ART HISTORY COURSES. She takes all of the fun out of learning about art history. Lectures waste time and are not enjoyable. She has a strict grading criteria (if not in her exact format you lose 25%). Offers no extra credit opportunities. She specifically says students CANNOT email her (ridiculous) and has limited office hours.
The course was interesting and everything was so clear and organized, it made the assignments easy. Joy met with me via Skype and in person multiple times this quarter, she the first online professor of mine to ever do that. She was so helpful, her advice made my submitted work much better.
Take her for AH if you like to read and write. She has office hours right after class and other days too, but she made additional meet times for me on Fridays for make-up work because I was sick multiple times. I enjoyed her class.
Loved this class, Prof Holland made the subject matter easy to understand and group activities were helpful, / exam is take home and many quizzes are done outside of lecture class time. She is fair and caring.
This class goes on to 2B in winter and 2C in spring, and majors take all 3 of them. Prof. Holland regularly gives quiz, group work and writing, and then she'll review when students are not understanding something. She'll also help you after class or other office hours, and look at your rough drafts, even the final exam rough draft!
recommend this professor to anyone who enjoys learning new ideas, art and architecture. Course is NOT difficult, requires completion of written homework and must follow the directions. Professor Joy online course was excellent
Don't get me wrong Miss Holland is extremely knowledgable in this field but is not fit for teaching. She isn't clear with material and I felt as if i was learning in a foreign language, Yikes! I actually withdrew from this class because I don't recommend wasting your time with this professor. She is also very strict, I felt like i was back in hs.
Online course was very organized and easy to go through since all detailed instructions are outlined for each assignment. Feedback on assignments was the most helpful part, the online quizzes were very interesting, in a good way. Also weekend office hours in skype with instructor was a huge plus :)
I have learned a lot from Prof. Holland this year in the ART 2 courses. She delivers a great lecture, but also expects a lot from you for class participation and group quizzes. The courses involved mostly written assignments and quizzes, so it's low-stress as long as you can manage regularly submitting work.
excellent professor, and accommodating, After I was sick and missed classes, several it happened, but prof. Holland always met with me outside of class so I could catch up!
I though Professor holland was coming from a good place (experienced in the field, went to UCLA, is passionate about art etc.) And she is accessible when you approach her. at times the lectures would be disjointed and the class never seemed to flow easily. however, given the chance and right circumstances she is pretty rad.
This professor teaches at a higher level, and there are quizzes, readings and assignments each week to keep up, and group work. Lectures on a few examples, compare and contrast, and drills on visual identification. She is not very organized, but is so knowledgeable that it makes up for it :)
A very knowledgeable and rigorous lecturer. Took this course as part of my Humanities requirement for UC Berkeley. She is on par with the UC profs, same wave length, and a ESL friendly for sure.
Does not respond well to student questions. She wants to Skype her students even though it's an online class and she takes a long time to grade assignments. I do not recommend you take her class. She does not encourage interest in her subject material.
Both Dr. Holland and her course were excellent, very rigorous! For an online course, I felt very connected to her, as we held video conferences 3 different times (I live in LA) and she wrote detailed feedback to me. The course involved meticulous writing assignments and visual study with customized images of architecture and art.
Very good online course,no timed or stressful test, instead it's reading, writing and discussion, and the quizzing. Very interesting subject matter and professor Holland very understanding
What I liked best about the course was the professor, who is knowledgeable, articulate and kind. I also liked the group work and the Canvas modules. The problem was the short time for writing assignments. I ran out of time, but actually I asked for an extension a couple times, and professor allowed me to submit late!
Joy does a good job of creating a stressful atmosphere for her students. For a basic course, the amount of work is not commensurate. Her feedback leaves a lot to be desired as well. Did not make me feel like I mattered when I asked for help.
Compared to other art history courses, Prof. Holland's course did not involve memorizing for exams, or discussing a hundred slides per lecture, which for me was very refreshing. There were mostly writing assignments which gave time to think, including the take-home exam. Whenever I needed help, Prof. Holland always met with me for a long time.
I agree w other posts professor Holland is always available after class and make s additional appointments. Also agree the lectures are fun and I learned a ton in her course! I am taking her again this fall.
I agree w other posts holland lectures are fun and I learned a ton in her course! I am taking her again this fall
Joy is the amazing teacher, she is very flexible, available through skype, her lectures are really easy.
Very interesting course but requires a committed student. Multiple assignments are due each week, including a usually longer writing assignment. However, the professor is very accessible and willing to meet almost anytime over Skype. Students get a lot of feedback on every assignment so it is very possible to improve, challenging but doable course.
this was a good experience with her, I learned more from her lectures than any other class and her style is strict but it was good for me.
Doesn't offer extra credit, incredibly strict on grading, and her lectures were all over the place
I recommend all three of the art history classes, though I took them out of order. Prof. Holland is brilliant, and very concerned with student leaning, but she definitely does not sugar coat anything!
This professor is dedicated and expects the same dedication from students. I learned a lot in her online course, especially about writing and paying attention to details.
I really don't recommend you taking her Art History class, especially If you want it for your GE. She made the lecture very boring, I was very interested in art history but she killed it for me. On top of that, she made the class unnecessarily hard, a lot of bureaucracy, very confusing grading, and she never give any second chances or extra credit.
Previous review says prof does not give second chancesshe definitely DOES and allowed class to re-take writing assignment. I learned a lot from her assignment feedback. Recommend her 100% for students who can show up and do the work. Initially, worried Holland's class would be too hardnow I realize she is just unusually dedicated and invested.
Excellent teacher, very clear about grading and expectations in Canvas, gives very clear instructions for all assignments, and is extremely devoted and will meet with you any time, any day, when you need help.
If you want to learn how to write academic-level for UC then take her class!
Very good lectures, she is hot professor, always available after class, she is very hard working and will push you to do better work. she tracked me down at end of the quarter and kept telling me to not give up, and she pushed me to submit my final exam, and I did pass the course afterall.
Holland is all tough love :) makes you redo everything until its better and then makes you redo again!! my final works were resolved, legit. Wish i had taken her for 5B. Recommend a hundred percent
i have no complaints about this professor, she is serious, caring, very intelligent, and organized. However, her class is no joke, and not for me because I work full time and was enrolled in 3 additional classes.
I do not recommend this teacher. She is very knowledgeable, but cannot communicate well with students. She does not meet students halfway, and her quizzes contain many trick questions. Doesn't seem like she wants students to succeed. When I took her class, she didn't come to her own office hour and the students taught themselves.
This was a great face-to-face class, but also organized in Canvas, well thought out, and has a definite arc to it. Prof. Joy is unlike any other, but students should trust her. She is very caring, it makes sense that she is strict.
If you are looking into taking Joys Fundamentals in Drawing class I HIGHLY recommend her! She gives very clear instructions and really helped me improve. However, I dont recommend taking her art history class as shes not a strong lecturer and her grading policies are lowkey ridiculous.
If you follow the instructions, guidelines and examples, you'll do fine in this course. You'll have to work on the writing assignments, but Holland will help you in meetings or phone, and gives super practical advice to make your writing high-quality. Holland has a nice exterior, but the personality of a mad scientist.
I enjoy Holland class, she is very helpful for my writing and tolerates ESL student errors. I can meet with her for help on my writing assignments each week. She understands how hard Chinese students work to study and learn English. Her class is not memorization or tests actually, so everything is writing assignments or quiz that is not easy.
UC level papers, must cite everything. The grading is ridiculous. I got into UC Davis 3 times, but she roasted my writing. Also very boring lectures. Nothing against her, just take a different professor if you aren't super passionate about art history. you will spend hours of your life writing her "response questions" that are literally essays. :)
I recommend if student wants to learn. Ms. Holland makes more time to help with me than any other teacher. Also very challenging but still she will help! Takes work ethic very serious.
I loved this class and Ms Hollands teaching style. The concepts really stuck with me, her lectures were more about ideas and historical contexts. I struggled in other classes to remember what I learned, but not in Ms. Hollands class. I also found the in-class quizzes very helpful, we worked in pairs, and she walked around helping everyone.
Great course overall professor always available after class and other days of the week and she is very sympathetic as long as you work hard she has no tolerance for slacking
My experience in this course and with this instructor was very positive, although the course included demanding writing assignments and much more effort needed compared to other courses I have taken. There's a level of seriousness in Holland's class, but she is sincerely dedicated to teaching and caring about students outside of the classroom.
Online course, it consists of 4 writing assignments, weekly quizzes, a few discussions, and final exam. The final exam is written also. Textbook purchase with online access required $89 total cost. Very clear grading rubric for writing. Instructor late on grading sometimes, and slow to reply to Canvas messages, otherwise all good.
Joy is an interesting teacher. Her grading is vague but specific at the same time and often times she contradicts herself. The projects were a lot of work but also fun. Her lectures however... prepare to sit for 3h and listen to her repeat the same boring info 3x. No phones allowed and prepare for a headache after class cause her voice is so loud.
This was the most horrible, awful experience at FH College because I took this class with Professor Holland this quarter. Honestly, I didn't learn anything from her lecture and what she did was keep telling you one boring thing over and over again during a three hours class. It was wasting time and money and make you feel never worth it. Dont take!
This class is a ton of work for just 4units. Joy had huge expectations but little compassion for students. Not one single student in the class I talked to enjoyed the course because of her long lectures *that contained little useful information* and ridiculous policies. She treated us like toddlers Who dont understand basic design concepts...
Fully Online, Learned so much...I thought we'd study Michelangelo or something, but we studied architecture and art in relation to religious contexts like Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, and to historical contexts like slavery in the U.S.A.... workload is not extensive, but is challenging, but Holland is super caring and will extend deadlines
I recommend you take her class.
this course was awesome, especially the reading and writing parts, I think the instruction is high-level, but I felt like I was able to do it, because feedback and rubrics were SO detailed and specific. Joy also will make time to talk to you on phone or Skype whenever you need help, and she gives extensions on assignments without penalty.
Recommend her 3d class, the project assignments were really thought out, and broken into steps or phases /the critques were student-directed, teacher gave a lot of help too during class work days. You will have to redo things also, but that's how she structure s the course.
You can definitely count on this teacher, she is tough but very caring. I would say the most important thing (because it is full online course) is to keep in touch with her, like thru Skype, messaging , or phone. Holland is very helpful one-on-one, and you will get a good grade as long as you do the work.
If you need to take humanities classes, take with her!!! Art history is a subject I was never interested in but her course makes it actually amazing and she is flexible when it comes to final exam which is written and you have a week to do it. Exam is based upon the previous assignments, so no surprises, but serious expectations
Tthis course was very challenging and the teacher extremely honest. She always wanted to help me, but did not allow for BS. I was allowed to submit late work, and she graded my written assignments so thoroughly, more than any other professor I've ever had, and such specific points & feedbacks, that I felt like I actually learned and improved
If you enjoy building and designing things, then you will like the class. NO computer design, actually it's all hand made projects. One big project is architecture and other is making large hybrid forms. Lots of class time to work on assignments.
Holland is working at higher level than other professor s. Good class for international student.
I thought it was a very clear, organized and well-paced course. I learned a lot from Ms. Holland. I earned an A grade. The assignments were challenging and focused on depth, not breadth, thought I can see how for some students this made the course more difficult.
The Course is very clear and organised. As Do as my assignment i got A.
Its an intro art class, yet the workload she gives is heavier than that of the English classes Ive taken in college by a lot. The first assignment requires more than 1500 words and is due on the 2nd week. She makes students do 3 more of those plus some quizzes. At least 20% of students dropped in both her classes. Should take another professor.
Routinely late to her own class, makes fun of students for answering questions incorrectly, and gives incredibly vague and confusing directions. There are long, essay-style papers due almost every week, with almost no time to get each done.
Spring quarter hybrid course professor's class was hard in the beginning, but I did learn a lot,, like A LOT, and by the end of the quarter it was smooth sailing. My other classes are usually the opposite.
Challenging course, but I have taken online courses over many years at 3 different colleges and 1 univ, and Ms Holland is the first FIRST professor EVER to call me on the phone and see how I was doing, she also did video with me. I do not feel like a number in her course, I feel like a person she knows my work. I would take Holland just for that.
The teacher gives these discussion assignments that are meant as "rough drafts", but is graded strictly. When you ask her for help, expect 3 days for a reply. And her answers are generic and not helpful. Then on top of the weekly reading, every two weeks there is basically a 10-page essay due. All of her feedback is generic and not personal.
omg this is the best design class, I love how much we focus on the design development and process phases, we make everything ourselves (no computers) and professor Holland organizes an exhibition for our work at a public art gallery. Be forewarned it's a lot of work.
Taking ART 1 online, I was pleasantly surprised by how Professor Holland sincerely cares about her students. She provides prompt, thorough answers to questions about essay prompts and makes a genuine effort to connect with students. The assignments will prepare you well for courses that require academic writing.
First I took Holland Art 1 online, and I failed course (so I had to re-take). Second then I took the same course with Holland in-person at Foothill campus each Mon/Wed. It was much better for me, as we work on assignments and discuss topic in classroom. I recommend in-person Art 1, at Foothill. Holland is inspiring and really loves students.
Professor Holland is a very sweet and caring teacher. I highly recommend to take her classes. She gives valuable feedbacks for writing assignments. You will get decent grades if you follow the criteria.
I thought Art was supposed to be fun I have taken 10 art classes and none of them were as heavy as this class. It has more workload than my English class. Gives vague advice and feedback when you need help. 10-page essays are basically due every two weeks added on to the weekly readings and discussions which are basically "rough drafts".
The class is NOT a lot of work, its the assignments themselves that are difficult/ challenging. But the instructor helps you when you need, so Id recommend. You def need to buy the book and revel access, because you will need to use all the time.
Lots of reading and writing. No midterms. Quizzes are easy, but weekly essays are difficult if English is not your first language. No extra credit, but you can submit essays late with a penalty. The textbook is really old and needs updating, Sherman Lee History of Far Eastern Art 5th Ed. Holland is nice but a really tough grader.
Joy Holland is a quite nice teacher, in my personal opinion. Things to note: 1. She has a decent chunk of writing assignments that you will need to stay on top of. 2. Detailed Rubics 3. I am a Computer Science major who kinda thought art was nonsense. But her passion and whatnot was actually kinda, well. It made me like art, which is no mean feat.
The Asian Art class emphasizes China and India. Jumps back and forth but very interesting writing assignments. My favorite parts are Hollands Canvas quizzes which are visual questions and answers (images are used). one problem is that we did not have time to cover everything.
Miss Holland is very intelligent woman, after taking her class I realised what art really is. She is so caring and informative. I never had a teacher like that in my life. She is very kind and flexible, if you have genuine reason she does gives extensions on assignments.
This class has been a nightmare. ZERO personalized feedback. Getting a good grade isn't difficult so long as you work diligently as you would for an in-person course. Joy Holland abandoned our class section for weeks at a time, working us past finals. Worst online experience yet. She's a very nice person, but not a good prof.
The best parts were her video lectures but I wish there were more of them to help with written assignments. Discussions and quizzes were interesting, and not numerous. I felt that for an on-line course it was disorganized and some modules were late , but prof informed it was first time she taught it online. I would have preferred in person class
She teaches the design and art class. I learned so much 3-D and about architecture design. The feed backs on each assignment lead to the next part so my designs became really great. Ms. Holland organized an art exhibition in public gallery for our class it was wonderful.
The text for the course is considered the best, but it has no online component. So you have to do written docs, quizzes, discussions, and videos that prof creates and grades. Then Covid 19 pandemic started, she allowed everybody to submit late and gave extensions on finals. Still, a challenging course.
You will enjoy the class if you like to read and write and learn about art.
Hands down one of the best in the art department... Prof. Holland organizes the design process into steps that reflect industry.... you will learn A LOT... the critiques comprise a significant portion of the student participation and because work is due every week, you will have to work hard every week. Challenging course!
Was not sure what to expect, but she blew me away with her deliberate thinking processes re how our writing was developed and evaluated. On par with any R1 university, but Holland's attention and concern for students is higher still. Would absolutely enroll in her class again.
If you ask me, she was one of the best instructors in my entire time, including at UC. The course was difficult, but that should not deter students who are willing to participate and keep in touch with her. She was always available after every single class and wanted to help .
We completed in-class quizzes in small groups, the questions were challenging but Holland was building upon previous historical contexts and attributes of specific visual cultural styles, incorporated into the quizzes. We wrote in relation to lectures, quizzes, and book, we learned the architecture & engineer vocabulary by drawing assignments.
