She is a new teacher at hcc, so doesnt know really the right ways of teaching. She makes easy exams, but her pop quizzes make your grade from A to a B. She is isnt very helpful and she doesnt seem to care about her students. She just wants to finish all the stuff she has to teach and thats all that really matters to her.
Please!Dr Marshall was great. Her power points helped a lot. She made all exams easy as possible.4 exams,No trick questions,50-65Q/mc. 10 quizzes/5Q fill in the blank.2 lab exams and lab book grade. Final was departemental, she does not make, worth 20% of grade, that exam was BAD and will lower your grade. My A went to B after final.
She never interacts with students. Only lectures, she asks questions and then answers them herself. I believe through my whole semester I heard 3 questions being asked. She pretends to be very friendly and helpful; however, do not forget a scant ton she will kick you out of class. I do not recommend her for anyone..
She is the least helpful professor I have ever had. She tests on 5-8 chapters per test and she will give a pop quiz on the same day as a major exam.
she is not helpful at all. she just reads the power point slides no explanation nothing at all.i do not recommend her.
Please... Don't take this professor, not helpfull at all,she doesnt care about her students all she does is reading the power points, worst professor that I have ever had.
Please if you take this professor you are going to have to teach yourself. All she do is read over power points especially do don't take this class over the summer! Super hard and she's not the professor to help you get through it she's also low key mean
DO NOT take this professor if you like having a good GPA! She gives lectures from the power point slides and goes so fast its impossible to take notes. She says that you have to commit 20 hours to the class a week which is wrong! You need to commit 40 hours because you have to learn everything on your own! Please save your GPA and do not take her!
She is not a good proffessor at TEACHING. She knows the material but explaining it in a way to learn it she can not do. If you are a self learned and do not want a professor to get in your way you can take her. She does take attendence. The book will be you saving grace to pace the class. GOOD LUCK!
Not an easy prof. but what do you expect? You aren't in jr. high, you're in college for God's sake. Take lecture notes, do your reading like you're supposed to and stay off your cellphones, and you will do well in her class.
HORRRIBLEEEEEE DO NOT TAKE HER
If you want to have a good GPA, don't take her. Her class is different from her test. She starts off with very easy test, and she hits you with a very difficult test in which no one passes. She doesn't curve. the scores in her class ranges from 80s-21s with averages of 40 percent. If you study really hard on your own, it still won't help.
You literally have to read the whole book if you want to understand half of what she says. Extremely boring, she talks so much you can't help but fall asleep. Doesn't help at all. Her tests are so different to what she teaches. Just don't even think about taking her class DON'T.
She doesn't do a good job in her long and boring lectures. You have to read the book to pass and need to do 100% of all the online assignments.
The first test is easy, the rest are hard. Only on two test did anyone get an A, most test the highest grade was a "C". You must be committed to this class or you will fail. She gives 70 points of extra credit, you better do it all! Do every online homework once a week. Take advantage of those by searching answers online. Commit hours daily for C-A
She gives out easy extra points before every exam, and just do your home work and study you will get an A. I got all As after the first test.
It is a tough class, but as long as you to class and read the material you will pass.
-HORRIBLE LECTURES! All definitions, no depth. -Grading scale very easy to comprehend. -A lot of extra credit & trust me, you'll need it. -Does not drop students, but if you skip her class you may miss out on extra credit. -Tests are fully based off books. -The only way you can pass is if you read the book & her online notes!
Dr marshall was an ok teacher. Her lectures are long and boring and i didn't really learn anything from her in class lectures. 1st test was easy rest were hard. I passed with a C and i donot recommend taking her. YOU MISS ALOT if you skip class for one day.
Dr. Marshall is AWESOME. She gives 65 points of extra credit. Her exams are super easy if you read the book. Her lectures don't really help, but if you read the book you will get an As on her exams. Her lab exams are the easiest. Basically THE SAME questions we did in lab. No reason not to get an A in that class. I will take her for microbiology.
Her test are very detailed but it is important to pay attention in class if you don't pay attention you are likely to fail the test but her labs are fun and interesting I make a B but work hard on it
This teacher is so hard.
Worstttt!!! Who gives a pop quiz on the same day of a major exam? Because of her now I have to take the class again and I have to get an A to get an average of c!! She just reads of her powerpoints and she's not the one who does the tests tho! Trust me don't even try
Take her class if you are prepared to read complete book. Her tests are easy and all content comes from book. She'll give you a lot of extra that'll help you to bring up your grade. Her labs are so easy, all you need to do is pay attention in her, complete online assignments on time and you'll make an easy "A".
Be prepared to READ before class. She gives extra credit, and her tests aren't too hard if you've paid attention and read the chapters before class. Labs are interesting and the lab exams easy.
Just finished taking her this summer. She is incredibly unfair. Didn't offer us extra credit or to curve anything. Questions are tricky and when you bring it to her attention, she swears it's straightforward. Maybe she is better during the semester but during the summer, she causes unnecessary stress. Avoid at all costs.
I finished this course for Summer Session 1 and Dr. Joy Marshall was a pleasant teacher. LOL I really don't know why there are such horrible reviews seeing as she literally gives you the answer to the pop quiz and tests during lecture. If you take notes and pay attention, there is no doubt you can get at least a B in this class.
Loved her. Not only were her lectures informative and intriguing, she's also very laid back and makes jokes. She gives you plenty of extra credit, so it seems like she truly wants you to be the best you can be in this class. As long as you read and study, as well as take solid notes, you will be okay in her BIOL1406 class.
Five exams- 45 multiple choice questions and two short answers, along with 10 pop quizzes through out the semester usually a week before the exam. -no curves -lowest grades wont be dropped -no extra credit -pretty much you get what you deserve
She is amazing. I took her 5WKS class during the summer. Though it was intense, it is definitely doable. Indeed, you are expected to read a lot but be mindful it is a science class. The professor is amazing at explaining things. I was very scared going into her class because of the reviews I read. But I will tell you, DON'T let that discourage you!
I took her during the summer and she is very difficult. Quizzes every class. If you take an exam that class be expected to have a lecture after and then another quiz on top of that. She might be better during the full semester but do not try to take her during a summer semester.
I don't know why she's getting a low rating here. She's great for my Microbio Lab. As long as you show up to class and pay attention, you'll get an A. Not just pass. You will be graded on 2 tests, 2 lab book grades, and 10 quizzes. They were pretty easy if you just listen to her and pay attention.
I took Dr. Marshall this past fall and she was very tough. There are 5 tests and 10 random quizzes. She has amazing lectures, however, YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOK. The only way in which you will pass the class with an A is by reading the literature. Also, she hates to be left unanswered, so if she asks a question, she expects you to know it!
I really don't understand why Dr. Marshall has such a low rating here. She truly is a wonderful professor. Your grade is heavily dependent on exams, but she gives out extra credit assignments with every lecture exam. I was able to get an A in her class even though I rarely had time to read the textbook.
She's cool and a member of THE DIVINE NINE!!! Her class was tough but I learned a lot. I made a C but I took this class during the 5 week term with no textbook and working full time. I wouldn't advise taking her during the summer term if you need/want an A because it is alot of information. Don't be like me - buy the book and make an A!
Poor lectures and labs. Exams does not reflect lectures and text.
She is the best science teacher at HCC. She knows Microbiology so well and explain it in a easy way, she made me love micro. :) So sad I can't take another class with her.
Very difficult class. I was studying all the time but still didn't do good during the test. The hardest professor so far! She def knows her stuff but I wouldn't take her again for any class.
She is amazing
Dr. Marshall is very vocal about her expectations. I barely used the textbook but learned through her lectures, which were easy to understand. There is a surprise pop quiz every week which counts as part of the overall grade and the tests are very difficult since it's so detailed and in depth. There is no extra credit and she does not curve grades.
Be warned- There is no extra credit, the grade you get is the grade you get with her. She is a knowledgeable prof, but definitely makes you work hard for it. I took her class twice to receive the grade I wanted. She is one of SW HCC best Microbiology profs, but shes really tough. So study hard!!
She's super nice, really knows her stuff, and is super straightforward. STUDY! READ. THE. TEXTBOOK. I cannot emphasize this enough. Her class is difficult and extremely test heavy, and she will NOT curve your grade. You get what you get, not buts. She does give extra credit, but only before every test, nothing extra or more.
Micro. I LOVED her teaching and her test are based of her lectures. I do not believe she tries to trick you in the test. She do not give reviews for the final or tests. She does have lecture notes which I recommend to read over them and take notes during lecture. You MUST READ!!!! in order to pass her class. NO EXTRA CREDIT and POP QUIZZES
You better study before her lectures b/c she goes fast and covers 3-4 ch a day. Even reading the book and doing practice quiz and studying her notes for hours ever day, I struggled a lot. Grade only come from test and 10 pop quiz, no xtra credit or hmwk so dont miss class. I got a 0 on a quiz b/c I was in the bathroom once, no makeups. Tough prof.
TAKE PROF. MARSHALL FOR MICRO LAB! Attend class, pay attention, you'll be fine. All labs were fun and interesting. Super easy pop quizzes at end of class. 2 tests, 2 lab book grades. Always happy to answer questions and pretty funny too!
Not sure why she received low ratings in the past. But, she is an excellent professor. I would take her again, for sure. She is interactive, helpful, animated in her teaching which makes it fun. has a sense of humor. I am going to miss her class.
Even you have spent all of your time on learning all the textbook outlines, attending the courses, and preparing the tests, even you prepared over 100 pages notes and study materials for any single test, you still can not get a A, and you will have a big chance to get depression due to the overwhelm information of the textbook, because you will
So I took her for summer. Worse experience ever. ONE of our classmates would get on her nerves and from that point on she started punishing the whole class. She made everything so difficult and did not help us on being successful none of us in the class ever got a good grade because the smallest mistake would take so many points from you.
I took her for lecture and lab. Beware of pop-quizzes. She's a good professor. She teaches what's gonna be on the exam. So go to class. No homework, unless you don't finish the lab questions in class but they only take a few minutes.
This is one of the WORST professors you can take, STAY AWAY from her!!! At all costs. She does NOT DROP ANYTHING under any circumstances. There is a quiz at the start of every class, so if you have a doctor's appointment or a family emergency, she doesn't care it'll be a 0. She grades super hard on Lab Reports. I dropped her class. She is rude!!!!
She is the worst, 5 tests including the final 4-5 chapters of homework, pop quizzes, she doesn't give extra credit, no dropped test, no replacing low test score with final. She does NOT post powerpoints& her reviews are pages long of definitions that don't help with tests. She is rude, not helpful, &doesn't help you learn she only reads pp slides.
Professor Marshall teaches very well. There are pop quizzes after each class but it is super easy. If you concentrate on your work and study you can pass with an A. Put your time into your work. She is a strict grader. But I liked her class very much.
Definitely a challenging professor. I'm in my last semester, with a 3.8 GPA, but I'm probably going to get my first C in her class because I didn't study well for 2 of the tests. If you take this class, you really have to be prepared to do the homework and read the book consistently. She doesn't accept any excuses, but she is a good professor.
STAY AWAY! Very inconsiderate, assigned 2 weeks worth of assignments to be completed in a day and have a test the next day. Does not care at all please run if you can!
This Professor is a professor that I would recommend taking every semester. Lots of work which allows you to have ample amount of opportunities to pass her class. She gives 2 pop quizzes every week which are super easy and the lab reports are easy as well.
Please do not take her !! She basically called the whole class stupid
She sucks ! She is the worst professor Ive ever had . You can work so hard in this class and she will still fail you and shes a liar .
She seems to be a nice person. I just felt like I had to learn on my own because she skips a lot of topics that need to be covered. She needs to give study guides so that we can check our understanding. The test dont reflect the lecture. She needs to make sure students understand what shes teaching instead of talking nonstop until the class ends.
She does not give any reviews for her Exams. She flies through her PowerPoint. She is at times friendly, but mostly rude. Over half the class dropped the course. You will have to read a lot to pass her class. Pay attention, she will give Quizzes after each class. JUST DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND STAY AWAY FROM HER.....
AVOID PROFESSOR! I signed up for classes last min I see why she had so many chairs opened. She speeds through the lectures & expects you to teach yourself & fully understand before you even walk into her class. No extra credit, no-makeup assignments. More than 3/4 of the class dropped & the remaining is failing. exams are 90% of your grade. AVOID
i took this course in fall 2021 and technically didnt pass. although i received a 57 in canvas she curved my grade up to a d which is the most helpful thing she did. hw grades, little extra credit, exams, and final. doesnt curve grades and wasnt considerate that we were dual credit students and didnt want to take the class in the first place.
She's an extremely rude and disrespectful professor, to the point I chose to withdraw from her class just after a couple lessons. Whenever I asked her a question, she would attempt to answer my inquiry utilizing the worst type of attitude imaginable. Not entirely sure how good she is at teaching, for it was her behavior that made quit her class
She expected us to study all of those chapters. She told us there were going to be 3 question to one station and one of my classmates asked her was she going to give us more time for those stations with 3 questions. She completely ignored her question. She moves on to the next lesson very quickly and there is a pop quiz after each class
This professor does not provide help when asked for help, I asked to clarify a question and was directed to read the book. They don't notify you about when assignments are due and when you missed the assignment and ask to do it, you'll be denied or ignored. Although, they reply fast on emails, you have to ask many times to get an answer.
She moves on to the next lesson very quickly. Exams are not that hard but there is not enough time to answer. There are stations and some have 3 questions. You just have 1 minute to answer. In some stations, there is only one question. So, the distribution of questions to the stations was not done properly. She does not curve the grades.
I wonder why HCC should retain such a person to continue to lecture in spite of her poor ratings. I believe she took personal frustrations to class and transferred them to students. People like that should not lecture in institutions of higher.
She flies over chapters and dismisses early. I spoke with other students and they agreed they leave her class confused because she moves on VERY fast. She is very organized and on time. Also, dress code matters to her or you will get kicked out of class or EXAM.
lectures are very fast, this whole semester felt like it was a in rush. Each exam is about 5-6 chapter all at once and the only material is up to sixteen slides FULL of notes just summarizing the text book. if you are not a heavy studier outside of the class and dont plan on spending time everyday catching up with each chapter i dont recommend.
Can be rude at times, its crucial to read the textbook and keep up and not fall behind in the class.
She rushes through lectures and is very disengaging. No one in my class got higher than a B on her tests the entire semester. If you do not read the textbook, you will fall behind. There's a lot of homework online. But she offers good extra credit every few weeks. Graded out of 700pts: Final: 100pts All Homework: 100pts 5 Tests: 100pts each
Very fast lectures. Has reacted harshly/rude to students on multiple occasions. Grade average for every exam was in the 40s-50s. When asked how to prepare/succeed in her class besides reading the textbook, she will again tell you to just read. I did not find the textbook ample study material compared to the exams. Do not take this professor.
Microbio in 5 weeks is intense, and it's true that her lectures are super fast. But, she is very clear in her expectations. You will need to read the textbook to get an A, but if you don't do that and just pay attention in class, you'll probably still pass. She'll tell you what you need to know for the tests. This class is not easy, but she's good.
Her teaching style is pretty good and she knows what she's talking about, it's just really fast. If you are taking her 5 week class prepare yourself for quite the journey. Exams account for about 85% of your grade. You do all these lab reports and homework to gain basically nothing for your average. There were weeks where we'd have 3 exams a week.
never dropped a class before her, on the first day she was rude & made her statement clear on no excuses and how its “not my problem”. A lot of pop quizzes & i studied for hrs just to not pass (she doesn't give access to the slides from lecture) if you're really good in bio do it but if you're an avg joe don't take her Average exam grade was 60's
I learned so much from this professor. She is kind, smart, and funny. Her class is a good challenge because it is really tests your time management/studying techique which is helpful if ur planning on going to grad school. You have reread each section in each chapter multiple times until you know it like the back of your hand.
This professor reads directly from slides without adding context or engaging with the class. Questions are often vaguely answered, leaving doubts unresolved. Lectures lack interaction, making it hard to stay engaged. Be prepared to rely on only self-study, as support and detailed explanations are minimal. Also her class average was in 50's.
She definitely wasn't the worst teacher out there, but if you had an option to choose a different teacher, go for it. She's lecture heavy, but take into account that you'd need to utilize both the textbook and her lectures in order to get a decent grade for her exams. A plus is that she gives a lot of extra credit, don't skim over that!
please run from this teacher. too fast in teaching, lectures not clear, testing is terrible. PLEASE look for another teacher if you want to learn and get good grades
By far one of the best professors I've had this semester. She gives excellent lectures, and is a nice person. Nothing wrong with the professor, Biology is just a tough subject.
I have never dropped a class before but this lady is not a good teacher her learning styles don't match my style. Her lessons are really fast even in a 12 weeks class. The work load was too much for me. And her suggestion for passing is read the book 3 times. Her homework is 80 questions per lesson with 21 lessons so there . she doesn't care.
I passed my regular bio glasses with a A+ and a B- but this class was impossible. Either you pass ALL you exams for nothing. The homework is just busy work it's super long but doesn't nothing to your course grade. I've never been frustrated in a course before but this was definitely my breaking point.
this teacher was very lecture heavy on her exams and she is not trying to help the students pass shes more trying to make the students fail she is not trying to help you on you pre and post-labs there are only 2 and 3 points availible and she makes it really hard to get all three points she actively looks for any place she can take points off on.
I am seriously warning you. Pick any other professor. I am a very good student, but this professor is just straight up diabolical. Her test questions are intentionally tricky, there is a pop quiz almost every class, and she doesn't give any review/study guides. She is one of those professors that relishes in giving out low scores. Beware.
Terrible class. Professor gives no help or grace. Homework is only 0.5 points, labs are 3 points, and exams are 100 points each (with no study guides or slides, just the textbook) Extremely harsh & very particular with exams and homework.
Worst teacher dont take class. She's very difficult and doesn't really help. Test only 30 mins and doesn't even give you time to think straight. AGAINNN DO NOT TAKE YOU'LL REGRET IT
this professor tend to be very rude and she does not help, is like she want all her student to fell called. justt don't take her
Worst professor ever. I believe she finds pleasure seeing students fail. An hour exam will be taken is 30 minutes, no time to think through your answer. She does not give review for the exams. God forbids, you can't make it to class or you are late, Just consider a zero for that day. Please DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME TAKING HER CLASS.
