Dr. Stacey is very clear with all of her explanations, but she goes extremely fast. It's very hard to take notes in her class because she flies through Powerpoints on the video. Read your textbook, and review your lecture notes after every class if you can. Stacey's midterm in fall 2009 was much easier than previous years' exams with Sparling.
She is very hard to follow, has a lot mistakes on her notes. Give way too many complicated pic and examples we do not need to know. She is going really fast.Never came by to my lab, so if you want to meet her you have to make appoitment. Does not respond to e-mails at all.pay attantion to every single word on the slides-USE YOUR TEXT BOOK! A LOT!
she goes really fast and blitz through the power points, so it's impossible to get good notes..but she did put the power points up so you can print them off, she leaves spots blank so you have to go to class. Her exam questions weren't that hard if you understand biology at all. She came to my lab once, her lectures were alright, use text
Emphasizes all the wrong information. Exam questions are far too specific for an intro course. Often goes off-topic in lecture (for up to 40 mins!).
Nice, but lectures were TOO FAST and confusing. She was way more helpful at the review sessions in person! Emphasised wrong info (was told know gen idea, out/inputs of cycles etc)and exams had very specific stuff. As well as said just study lecture info (use text btw!!).Not to mention very confusing, long questions. 1st midterm was a breeze though.
Joy Stacey is not helpfu and makes biology more confusing then it needs to be. She is an awful prof. I tried to get help on glycolysis and she confused me even more and made me feel stupid for seeking assistance. Its such a shame that she teaches first year bio because her lectures are to quick and her notes are presented in a confusing manor.
ok yeah 1st midterm was easy, but the final was dumb. ridiculous questions pulled out of nowhere with multiple right answers. lectures were crazy made me fear biology wiht my life, like others have said she makes it so confusing. yes it is an intro course but clearly made to weed out people. study notes buy old exams read textbook

You can keep up with her as long as you print her powerpoint notes posted online before coming to class. She is thorough, and all her questions come straight from lectures. I learned a lot from her. Her midterms were fair, but the final was brutal. Good prof, very orderly presentation, just make sure you review
Very good prof. She does teach quite fast but she has a lot of material to cover in a short period of time. No textbook is needed for her section because her exams are based on lecture notes, she even says so herself. Her notes have all the detail and figures you need. Mid-Term was very easy but final was much more detailed and harder but was fair.
I thought she did a good job. Her notes were organized and easy to follow. Sometimes she went a little too quickly through slides, so it's good to sit with a buddy so at least one of you gets the blanks filled in. Midterm was fair. Her part of the final though was ridiculously/unnessicarily hard! Don't even remember going over some stuff she asked.
It is okay. Sometimes her notes kinda confusing. But she is a good prof
Very pleasant and easily approachable.
I liked how she organized/presented her lectures. She was very approachable, was always there when I had questions, and was very pleasant.
I really liked how organized she was with her notes and if you weren't understanding topics she was helpful, however very difficult to book times with outside of class. Attending class and keeping up with readings is mandatory if you want a solid mark, she moves very quickly through lectures also.
This women gave me a F the first time I took the course because i failed the lab portion by 1 mark and i would have gotten a B. and then second time i took it. she gave me a D! on the final in the long answer she took off so many pointless marks and i couldnt challenge it because by the time we got our marks. the date had already passed.
Dr. Joy is nice but is highly unapproachable. I have been to her office several time at different times during different days of the week and she was never there. She only responds through e-mail. Dr. Joy is familiar with the subject but is all over the place. She does not spend enough time talking about important stuff. Not good.
OK Prof. However does not spend enough time on important topics during the video lecture to grasp the concept, and sometimes moves a little quickly. Very helpful when asking questions, really wants you to do well
Dr. Joy Stacey is not a good instructor. I don't care if she has a Ph.D or not, if you can't deliver the information to your students.........what good is it? She makes at least a few mistakes during every lecture, so you always wonder what's correct and what's not. She doesn't emphasize important points. I think she is there for money only.
Beware, not good. I can't believe they give her to 1500 students, the highest mark on the final last year was 60%.
Waste of time and money.
This is a great prof. She is helpful and easy to find. Her lectures are easy to follow and if you listen you will know what you are doing.
Obviously the comment below this one is Dr. Joy Stacey's remark about herself. MY friend's class all got 40%-60%, she doesn't shift curves for grades. Doesn't care about anything. Says she has office hours but doesn't really... Only talk but no action. Not ready for lectures, makes a lot of mistakes as a result of lack of care.
I think she is a fine instructor. I have her for inverts and she is helpful and knowledgeable in the lab. Plus the lab exam was alot easier then I thought it would be. She gave us candy throughout the exam! First year biology is weeder course what do you expect. It's not her.. it's the way it's supposed to be with 1500 students enrolled.
Some people find her a not a good prof and I think it's because the students themselves are not prepared for her classes. She's a really easy prof considering that her lecture notes are posted on Angel (not like michael shaw's) and she teaches directly from the textbook, so no confusion.
good prof. bio isn't my best area but I got straight A's in the class. if you show up, pay attention, and actually study with the powerpoints (and a little from the textbook) you should do great. I hate studying but if you put in the effort you will do fine in her class.
Joy has been one of the best profs I have come across so far in my university career. She demonstrates her passion for the subject and is also encouraging us to see her/email her with any questions we may have regarding the lab material. Provides hints for lab exam material and truly wants her students to do well!
Quote: "10/19/10 Biol1020 Beware, not good. I can't believe they give her to 1500 students, the highest mark on the final last year was 60%." I took the class last year & I definitely got higher than 60%.. So did other people. Are you sure you're not just angry because you failed? Anyways, she taught my BIOL2200 lab this year too, very helpful.
She was my first professor at university. First exam was really easy but the two following ones got harder. It is hard to get help from her during office hours but the textbooks explain everything you need to know. Make sure you go over her lectures and understand the subject because there are things that she teaches which are not in the textbook.
She is a good teacher. It is great that she posts the lecture notes on angel. The explanations are clear. This course requires a lot of studying and some textbook use to get a A/A+
In the beginning was very thorough and I loved the fact that she posted lecture notes online prior to the actual lectures. However, as her portion of the lectures ended, she wasn't as clear as she was in the beginning of the course.
Good prof and tries to be really helpful and friendly. The course is challenging especially the lab exams and the midterm. The textbook was not necessary at all.
Good prof, just study hard. When it comes to biological pathways, know your stuff. This is as hard as the course will get. Second half is easier! She looks taller on the vid lectures than she actually is.. much taller
Very friendly. Answered all my questions. Continued to remember me and say hello to me when passing by in the hallway the next semester. Highly recommended.
Useless and videotaped. Makes a ton of mistakes per lecture. She should just go and do some research work. She is not a teacher.
She was extremely friendly and helpful outside of class. Her tests were very easy (Surprised to see that she only has an average easiness rating of 2.7 on here). Just dont cram. Review after every class and on the weekends. Start studying for tests 2 weeks before. Make tables, charts, summaries, etc to analyze and understand content.
First of all she has a really annoying voice, her videos are so useless u dont even have to go to class i learned everything from the textbook and the first mid-term the questions try to trick you and its so specific, Its all memorization. Being in her class has made me hate bio.
She has such a boring voice!!
I don't understand the low ratings... the decision to video tape the classes is the department' choice, not hers. She's very helpful outside of class. If you keep up with the lectures and review, this class is a breeze. Textbook is handy, but not required.
See is a very nice person to talk to and is helpful but sometimes in her lectures she just doesn't explain things well. The questions she asks on the exams try to trick you so you have to study hard. I also feel she teaches things which aren't really that important and not enough time on the harder stuff.
Videos make it hard to pay attention. Fill in the blank notes are awful.
Had Stacey in summer, in person. She was excellent. Easy to understand and follow. Easy Midterms and finals. Loved Bio because of this course.
it's way better to take this class in the summer than in the regular session. I personally don't like video lectures. But she was an okay prof.
condescending
Decent at the best of times.
She posts powerpoints online but fill in the blank notes suck. I found her explanations for things more complicated than they needed to be.
Unfortunately not as clear in lecture as could be, but makes great use of online technology, and is helpful in lab.
Personally, I liked her lectures. I did not attend class but borrowed DVDs from library (this way you can pause & rewind). Do yourself a favour and ADD TO HER NOTES. If you dont, studying from notes will be hard and not make any sense (I spent 2-3 hours per lecture). Did not see much of her, except in labs, she appeared to be very nice and helpful
Didn't explain the notes very well and I found myself confused at most times. I studied for the exams using mostly mastering biology to understand, otherwise the notes would have left me lost.
If you don't add to her powerpoint notes they are completely useless and make no sense, fill in the blanks suck and are easy to miss. Very boring and annoying voice. The course was easy only because the content wasn't that complicated. Textbook explained things way better than she did
Decent Prof. Will help out and give feedback. Lectures were difficult to follow. Must add to lecture notes and either go to class or watch videos in library. She is nice, but is unclear sometimes and can make things more difficult to understand.
It definitely helps to watch the lectures in the library, so that you can pause them and write notes. Sometimes she flies through slides. ALOT of material, textbook helps clarify concepts. Doing MasteringBiology assignments definitely helped a whole lot. Final exam was a bit tricky, but the class isn't so bad. It's interesting.
Had her in the summer so she taught in person and not by video. The video lectures definitely make the course more difficult than it has to be but if you have her in person as a prof she is AMAZING!!
Awful, very hard tol isten to her videolecture and looking back at the notes are very unclear. Doesn't seem like she cares.
Very very hard to understand. Her slides on the video lecture is all over the place. I have never had so much trouble in a class. She just doesn't seem interested in what she teaches so it makes it hard to learn
Great genuine teacher, but doesn't clarify difficult concepts, and the notes don't make much sense when you go back to read over them. Very informative and helpful if you ask questions in person, but video lectures don't help much. Difficult exams as well
Going back to read her lecture notes to study,I realize that they are just random sentences copied from the textbook. The difference is that these sentences are incomplete and out of context. So, her notes are no good. She also flies through slides like there's no tomorrow. When I attended, I couldn't pay attention because I had to write. She's bad.
Her notes do not make sense at all, they are very unorganized. She seems like a nice person but hardly replies to student emails. Although, textbook explain the concepts much better. Her exams were very tough as well. She was not able to explain the difficult concepts. Course is overall very interesting and textbook was an excellent resource.
Since this is a video lecture, you don't actually get to see much of her in class, but during her portion of the course she came to lab every week to ask if anyone had any questions and seemed genuinely nice. Her notes were really thorough but her portion of the exam was tough. I'd say look over her notes before lecture, you'll be way better off.
Good prof if it wasn't for the damned video lecture, I prefer in person teaching. Otherwise will answer any questions you have about the material she teaches. Questions on the exams can be confusing if you haven't kept up with the material.
i would ask you to avoid this prof if you can. her notes are very unorganized and seem out of place, and her portion of the exam was very hard. her lectures never helped, she was very hard to understand.
Her lecture note are unorganized and unclear. I learned her portion of the course from the textbook. However, she is helpful if you ask a question in the labs.
I am EXTREMELY disappointed in Professor Stacey. The lectures are far too fast in pace, do not produce quality notes, and the exams cover material not present in the lectures or the textbook. Her lectures are dull and seem to drag on forever despite moving so quickly that they do not seem to go in depth at all.
By far the worst prof I have had at U of M. The first half of the semester, lectures were done by her and the second half by Michael Shaw. Michael was easy to follow and understand, Joy might as well have been speaking a different language. Nothing she says makes sense, and she is impossible to follow along with.
Decent lecturer, but slide show notes can seem somewhat unorganized and confusing. Would prefer in person lecture rather than video lecture
exams are very specific, lectures are confusing and quick. print the slides before hand and write extra notes in them. Do practice exam questions in Biology Undergraduate student group. textbook saved me.
Her lectures were much less clear than the lectures by Michael Shaw. I would recommend trying to read her slides before class to figure out what will be going on, but the slides are sometimes extremely difficult to follow. READ THE TEXTBOOK ITS TONS OF HELP!
Her notes are HORRIBLE! when studying for exams i tried looking back on her slides, they consist of random blobs of sentences all over the page. She'll skip a whole bunch of words that leaves you wondering if you're even in biology anymore. She explains well when you see her in person, but her lectures are useless.
Her lectures would be a lot more easier to learn from if it contained actual sentences instead of point form galore. Which made it harder to do the exams she gave which required a higher amount of knowledge then the notes helped you acquire.
Overall, joy Stacey was a good prof. You need to take time to read the textbook and notes in order to succeed in this course. That's why I think lots of people give her bad ratings; because they are too lazy to put work into something to get a good result, don't blame the prof for your lack of effort. Lectures were boring but packed with info.
Her notes aren't that great because they aren't full sentences. If you don't keep up with the material, you will be lost. Try to find past exams because she basically recycle her questions. I asked her many questions whenever I saw her in my lab, so don't waste your chance to do so too.
her slides were very confusing, and she did not write in full sentence, so you never understood what she meant. I learned everything I knew from reading the textbook (even though you are only tested on material from her slides). Do the practice exams , because old questions always reappear on the midterm and final!
Inverts is a heavy & tough course. Her slides were a little disorganized, but all in all I enjoyed her lectures. She showed videos and lots of pictures and related a lot of stuff to current research. The only thing I didn't like was her testing method, VERY tough grader on shortlong answer questions. She held my interest, all in all good prof
This prof provides lots of information on each slide. Her tests are extremely hard and it is mandatory that you show up to class and study hard. She is very approachable if you need help however you need to go see her in your own time since the class is a video lecture. She also makes an effort to answer questions when you are in the lab.
she's a really tough teacher, her lecture notes don't match up to the exams, doesn't specify her lectures properly, has no empathy towards students. AVOID IF YOU CAN!!
First of all - video lecture doesn't do her any justice. But her notes are awful. Yes, she does post them so you can have them beforehand, but a lot of unnecessary info is on the slides. Said she'd drop into the labs if we had questions and I saw her once. Extremely unhelpful prof.
The majority of her lectures are just point forms, so I needed to read the textbook chapters for clarification. Reading only the lecture notes will not help you pass. Her tests are also difficult.
Terrible notes. Make your own notes from the textbook.
The material she covers is super boring, long winded, and very detailed. She doesn't lecture with much enthusiasm so it is hard to stay awake. Would recommend just renting the DVD's from the library so you can listen at your own pace. She is a nice lady in lab and answers all your questions, just hard to listen to.
Joy Stacey stumbles a lot during the recorded lectures, which makes the lecture harder to listen to. Her notes provided are very bare - be prepared to be completely dependent on the textbook. She's actually very nice in person and makes an effort to answer questions when she comes in lab, her lectures themselves are, however, very sub-par
Really, really bad video lectures. Don't listen to the people that say you need the textbook, you really don't. I never touched the textbook once for the entire course and still ended up with an A+. Just write down what she says in lectures, and study the notes given, and the course should be no problem.
Lecture notes are not specific, everything is abbreviated, therefore textbook is a must. I pretty much taught my self the entire class, even though i didnt skip a single class i still did better in Michael Shaws part of the class. She talks fast, skips slides and her tests are awful, because the wording is just way too difficult.
She has a bit more difficult material to teach than Shaw does in my opinion, which doesn't do her any justice. I found that she emphasized a lot on the cellular cycles so I studied that the most. When it came to the midterm however, there were only 2-3 questions on it and then it seemed like the majority was on stuff she barely talked about.
She seems like a really nice person but could definitely improve as a professor. Her notes are hard to understand and the lectures are pretty boring. I only remained interested in the class because I liked the topics. If you want good grades you WILL need to read the textbook because what she writes is just not enough.
Pros: -Gives you premade notes that are explained well during lecture -Goes to lab to answer questions and gives helpful explanations -Teaches you everything you need to know for exams with lectures alone Cons: -Talks too fast, premade notes are required -Notes are way too abbreviated, make no sense w/o explanation Go to class and you'll do well.
Course is not that difficult, all in all. Joy's notes are horrible, might as well read textbook for further explanation, boring lectures. It is very possible to d well in this course without these prof, must fully understand material
Goes through material very quickly and does not explain things well. Sometimes she does not speak clearly in the videos and you miss what she says. Provides notes ahead of class. Defiantly recommend printing those off and bringing them to each class as you wont have time to write and draw everything. Defiantly not the best prof.
Stacey went a bit fast, but she covered material in depth in her lecture and provided the key terms/topics you need to know. However, the textbook was essential to do well. She is there for help if you need it but make sure to go with specific questions. She has a good knowledge of the material and goes beyond requirements in the lectures.
You need to be willing to do most of the learning on your own. Read your textbook, show up in lab and study.
She was a pretty good professor! She gave lots of examples in her lectures and seemed to really know a lot about Biology. I enjoyed her lectures and understood them.
Her notes for BIOL 1020 were very abbreviated. If you want to fully understand what she is talking about, the textbook is your go to. I felt like I always seemed to do worse on her portion of the exams than Shaw's.
Her provided notes are very difficult to understand, and her lectures don't do very much to clarify them. She teaches the toughest part of the course and doesn't try to simplify it. Her test questions are set up for you to pick the wrong answer, and she was not very friendly when I asked her for help. Basically just told me to read the textbook.
Worst professor Ive had in science
I'd honestly say that this was by far the worst section of this course, she not easy at all and whole point of this is to kick as many students out during the first midterm so she makes the midterm really really hard and not just that her lecture notes don't help at all.... do try switching out if you can.... the second half is what kinda saved me.
Monotonous, seems to know what she is talking about but goes through material awkwardly
She seems really nice. However, I found her lectures to be very confusing. The only way I did well was by studying the textbook but even then, the textbook has a lot more material than you need to know. I felt her portion of the exam was on nit picky detail and tough because of the amount of detail and concepts she expects u to incorporate in.
Lectures were interesting but a ton of information so be prepared. The tests are hard, and the average for them in my class was 50% and half the class dropped. In my opinion the tests are made way to hard for a 1000 class. If you are interested in the topic, take the class, but if you just need a bio I recommend taking a different class.
she seems to know her stuff and is very approachable. lectures are boring and notes are confusing. She goes through a lot of material very fast. Her exams are hard and you need to know every little detail.
She seems to know what she's talking about, but the content is just not very interesting. Her voice is really monotone and I had a hard time paying attention. Notes are really confusing and don't help much. Tests are insanely hard.
Overall the class was pretty easy and her tests were fair. She knew her stuff and made fairly clear explanations.
Personally, I found that professor Stacey made the class a lot harder than it had to be. Her lectures were in the form of videos so there was never an opportunity to ask questions and they went way to fast to take notes. Professor Stacey offers help in her office but when I went she made me feel stupid for not understanding certain concepts.
She is a terrible prof. I would recommend taking correspondence over having her. She doesn't seem to know the material well enough to teach it and she is very rude to students. If you approach her with a question she makes you feel dumb and her answers are less that useful. Overall terrible experience. I hope she gets replaced in the future.
Had her for BIO1010 and I thought this class was an easy A but I'm also very good at Bio. For tests all you need to do is print off all her slides and fill in notes as u go. Didn't even take the plastic off my textbook. Only complaint is her marking is tough and shes the only BIO1010 prof to give long and short answer on tests other classes got mc
Nice prof, everything you need to know are on her power point slides but she basically just reads off of them and goes through them really fast, but they're all available online. There's lots of material to memorize but overall it's a pretty easy course for non-science students
I absolutely hated this class. She honestly made me hate university. Her teaching style is messy and unorganized. She also words test question either very funny or with errors.
I found her notes to be quite vague, actually. A lot of the time I would spend even more time making notes from the textbook to fill in for lack of information. :/
Bad notes and lectures. Very unclear and weren't helpful for the midterms/exam. Used to getting close to 100% in most classes, got 60's on her midterms. Not a fan of the material either. However she seems like a very nice person.
Her lecture videos go way to fast to take notes and understand. A lot of material covered each class, she mostly reads off the slides, and explains things in a way more complicated way than they actually are. Not a fan at all.
She is probably one of the worst professors at the UofM, and this is my second degree. She goes way too fast for an introductory course, constantly makes mistakes on both her lectures and videos (clearly doesn't care enough about her job), isn't thorough enough in her explanations, and finally, her notes confused me more than they helped me.
Utter Disaster.
Her notes really did not make any sense looking back at them. It was very frustrating studying for her part of the course. She didn't explain things well at all. The course wasn't too hard so it wasn't that much of a problem.
Awful lectures slides. I'm constantly having to read my textbook to teach myself rather than actually learning from her.
Decent prof, goes very fast in her lectures, and manages to be somewhat vague. Still taught me most of the material though.
I wouldn't be that tough on her. BUT get ready to use your massive textbook, because her lectures are confusing and it's a LOT of material. Exams can be quite tricky, do not just memorize everything, but try to understand the concepts in depth. She is a nice person but struggles to explain things. So often you may feel overwhelmed & lost
I have never seen anyone teaching like her. Her lectures are so disorganized and confusing that it seems like it was specifically designed in that way. It always takes me hours to just figure out the hidden message in her lectures.
In general, Dr. Stacey is a nice person and seems to offer help to students when needed. However, her lectures are very disorganized and she often focuses on a trivial part of the topic rather than an important part. If I didn't have a good understanding of biology I would have been lost. Students have to really utilize their textbooks.
Joy Stacey is one of the worst profs at the U of M. She overcomplicates simple cycles and confuses students. The text book is the only thing that got me through the portion of her lectures. Her exam portion is very complex compared to Mike Shaw's. Her overall teaching style is difficult to comprehend. Don't take her class if you don't need to.
I found her lectures to be boring and difficult at first and i never payed attention during class, however you can rewatch the lectures on campus and when i watched them and payed attention she is a good prof. Exams are based exactly on what is said in her lectures, just study so you understand the topics well
Her lectures are very disorganized. Tbh, her 50min lecture videos can be summarized better through 10-15min YT videos which are more clear and concise. You do need to use your textbook A LOT to understand the biological processes which means you need to take extra time to break down the concepts into smaller and simpler pieces.
Worst science teacher ever!! She goes through the lecture really fast and the way she explains things makes them even more complicated. Her notes basically have nothing worth studying.
Hard to believe Joy has a phD. Seems to actually understand very little related to biology. Will often come around to "visit" during labs but when is asked a question will usually reply with "ill get back to you on that one". Overall the worst prof I've ever had at the university. 0/10.
Horrible prof, her exams are FULL of typos and unfair questions. Her lecture notes are really all over the place. Honestly just get the AP Biology crash course book and study that- it has everything you need to know in like 200 pages. This whole course is like teaching a kid to ride a bike, then throwing them into the Tour de France.
Joy Stacey was the worst prof I have ever had, unfortunately if you want to take bio 1020 you have no choice.
Outstanding course and Professor. Her notes & lecture (albeit in video form) were clear and informative. Very helpful outside of class and in lab. People really should not complain about this class. If you read her lecture notes more than once you will pass her portion of the course with flying colors. Only gripe with the class is the proofreading.
It really sucks that she is the only prof available to teach the first half of BIOL1020. Although she does provide power points for notes, the notes are SO vague. You might as well just grab the syllabus on the first day and the textbook and study on your own for her part of the course.
Dr. Stacey's notes are hard to follow, and she moves too fast for you to pick out the main idea of the slide. The content is difficult, you will need to use the textbook to reteach yourself everything she explained poorly. Everyone has to take her course, so I recommend watching the video lecture outside of class so you can watch at your own pace .
Very fast in her lectures. Told us to expect easy questions on the exams (didn't happen). Really had to dive in the textbook for her part of the course.
Joy's part of this course is a lot harder than Mike's portion. If you fail the first midterm, don't get discouraged. Joy is super nice and energetic, but she doesn't know how to teach. The information is simple but explained complicated. I'd watch the video lectures on my laptop in the library rather than go to the class (that way you can pause).
Made the lectures way more complicated than needed. Her notes were all over the place and unorganized. She would always complain she had "migraines" from the amount of emails she received.. All in all not very helpful.
I don't think her part was harder. She just makes the exam questions a little more complicated and challenging (especially the final). You will need the textbook to get more explanation of the key concepts. Otherwise, she's nice in person
She has a lot more to teach (and harder material) than Mike so I find that impacts a lot in her lectures. She is approachable, but isn't very good with explanations. Her exam questions are so difficult and really hard to follow. You have to know many concepts just to be able to answer one multiple choice question which is why many people fail.
She's by no means a bad prof, but her teaching can be scattered. Using mostly the textbook, I did well on the exams while I used her lectures as a reference when I was reading. She's helpful in lab and makes an effort to answer your questions, as well as very accessible through email. Don't rely solely on the lectures and read the text.
Freaking long lectures, very in depth, will test on the most meaningless of material
Her lab diagrams are incorrect, her lab TA's also label incorrectly so it is hard to win when this material is new to you. Extremely hard material and LOTS of it.
Dr Stacey's teaching style was disorganized. She over complicated many topics and didn't do a particularly good job at connecting concepts. She gives vague answers to questions and often does so in an overwhelmingly condescending manner. She gave off the impression that she cares very little about her students success. Exam questions were specific.
Awful
Dr. Stacey is not very good at presenting information, her lectures are scattered and throw lots of information at you. I would recommend reading the textbook to put the concepts together. She also doesn't really seem to care about the students, and didn't give very polite answers when asked questions. Easy concepts but lots to know, study hard!
Joy is fantastic. Inverts and chordates are both lab-heavy courses but Joy is very clear about her expectations. She provides clear instruction and tests very fairly. Lab exams are stressful for any course, but she gives fair exams and focuses more on students' learning than test scores, which I valued. Her labs are so fun! I loved Joy's lab!!
Joy Stacey, is very distracting because of her hand gestures. Her video lectures and note taking goes by really fast. Talks too much about pointless stuff like her marker use. She cant get it TOGEATHER.
Joy Stacey is by far the WORST prof I've ever had. Her lectures make NO sense and there are constant errors in her lectures and pdf's. Not helpful at all, takes weeks to answer emails and doesn't even fix errors on her slides. It's very confusing to learn new material when it's wrong. Do NOT take her class if you can avoid it!
Honestly her lecture notes were really hard to find at first. Too many notes to read. Her exams are so difficult and she makes them so complicated. The video lectures played in class are too fast and it was hard for me to understand.
puts me to sleep
Her lecture notes are very disorganized, and she always sounds unsure of what she's lecturing on. It's really hard to pay attention in class because the lectures are boring. On the first midterm, there were a couple of questions on concepts we never covered, and many were extremely specific. If I didn't take AP Bio, I don't know if I'd survive.
Lectures are extremely fast-paced, content-heavy and the notes/slides are very unorganized and hard to follow. Having the textbook will save your butt. She lectures too fast, not a proper method of teaching students; many of which have seen content for first time. I study 2-4 hrs of bio a day, follow her "study tips", barely scraping by. Depressing
You will not succeed in this class if you rely on her lectures only. I gave up following her lectures after Unit 3 when she wrote out in a lecture "togeather" instead of "together" multiple times (not just one typo!!) and i went straight to the textbook and youtube videos to learn the content. Spare yourself the boring hours, and just read the book
Joy Stacey's lectures are scattered, if it wasn't for the textbook I would be lost if I just solely relied on her lectures. I end up spending extra time re-organizing the information from her lectures just so the info. makes sense. It would really help if she just followed the the concepts in each chapter in order, not jumping all over the place.
The lectures don't match up perfectly with the textbook in order, but you are only tested on lecture material and text sections she mentions. She is very fair in that regard. Print the lecture slides and bring them with you; read through the text and add if you want. She is very friendly, responds to emails when she gets the chance. Very easy A+.
Get ready to break your hand because she talks way too much and fast. Way too much information in one lecture.
She's an amazing prof, but she just jumps around in her lectures. Defs will be using khan academy to relearn her part of the course for the final exam.
As a first year university student I found her lectures to move way to fast. I rarely went to class and found that watching the lecture videos outside of class was beneficial. By doing this I was able to pause the videos on my own time so I could take notes and actually process what she was talking about.
Lectures not well organized
My boy hamzah akhtar is better at teaching that Joy Stacey and my friend abdullah didnt understand anything from her because she is not on abdullah's level
Gets a bad rap because her portion of the course has way harder material however, she explained concepts clearly with useful analogies and diagrams. Exam questions are very hard and meant to confuse students. She was very, very good at being available to help students during office hours or through email. Very organized
Dr. Stacey is awfully unorganized and presents lecture material in a confusing fashion. I had to teach myself her entire section of the course. She's pretty intimidating, but still a nice person.
DONT HAVE A LAB WITH HER. SHE IS TERRIBLE. She provides NO input as to what to expect for the lab exams. She tests on RANDOM details requiring 4 questions to be determined in 2 min, while looking at a dissection or microscope. SHE DOESNT CARE ABOUT HER STUDENTS. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS, NOT WORTH THE TEARS.
Second course I've taken with Dr. Stacey. A lot of the 1020 kids are mad because she teaches the harder part of the course, but don't let that deter you; she's extremely knowledgeable, approachable, and generally a great professor. Lab exams for inverts are tough but fair.
-good person, meh prof -disorganized notes (talks about one thing, then regresses to another thing...) -learned from textbook - much more straightforward and sequential -test questions are kinda tough; the wording for her MC options are kinda confusing sometimes.... best way to pass the course: do old practice exams - trust.
Dr. Stacey is not as bad as most people describe her. HOWEVER, DO NOT ATTEND LECTURES. It is difficult to keep up with her rapid pace in lectures. Watch her lectures on your own time so you can pause videos. Believe me, this is much easier and will help you greatly. The only issue she has is a lack of organization and her rapid pace, pausing helps.
She has her own PDF files, I would recommend printing them before every lecture. There is a lot of information to know but I find if you study the material, it will not be to bad.
Dr. Stacey isn't helpful at all. Doesn't even post lecture slides from labs that she talks about and skims through it really fast. Almost feels like she purposely doesn't want you to copy her notes. LMAO would never take this prof again.
Thhough many criticize her its the material thats difficult in comparison
Do not rely on her lecture notes and study beyond her notes for assessments. Her part of the course is much more difficult make sure you keep up and truly understand every concept with detail.
she is literally so bad, i heard biol 1020 isn't video lectures anymore and honestly i can't imagine having to see her face everyday in person and listen to her blab. avoid at all costs there are so many better profs to take this course with
Her lecture slides are often incomplete and have typographical errors in them. It makes them confusing. You really need to attend class to elaborate on the slides . Its unfortunate because I have very successfully used complete slides in other courses and with hers being so light, you really have to make your own notes and study off of those.
Joy Stacey is knowledgeable and friendly but her courses are very poorly taught. She is terribly disorganized and her notes aren't helpful and are difficult to understand. Notes and exams had several crucial typos. Impossible to learn from her lectures and notes. Do not take her if you are a first year student. Used many trick questions in exams.
Joy really wants her students to understand the material, and not just memorize. Her exams are definitely not easy, they require you to actually think and be able to apply your knowledge. That being said, Joy does prepare you for those kind of questions, so you know what to expect in the exam. Her lectures are great too!
Despite her slides being the bare minimum and containing quite the abundance of typos, I feel that she did a pretty good job at teaching the material. You could collaborate on pop quizzes, and weekly guided reading quizzes forced you to review before coming to class. Highly advise adding notes to her slides, she emphasized likely exam questions.
Joy is a terrible prof. Her lectures are dry and boring. There are quizzes due at the beginning of each week and pop quizzes in class (5-6 of them) but luckily they are open book. Joy's pdfs are very disorganized and have many mistakes. Her exams are very hard with many trick questions on them. I would suggest picking a different prof if possible.
Joy's is honestly a laidback prof with very basic and boring lectures. Her notes are very disorganized, but if you have somewhat of a good understanding of Bio, it'll be an easy A with minimal effort.
Mediocre at teaching. Nice person. Stupidly unfair exams. Seriously, the content needed for this lab is already ridiculous but the exams she makes are needlessly hard because her questions ask for basically everything. Yet, she'll look at the 47% average in our section and say "ya'll didn't study enough". Maybe your exams are a bit unfair?
Joy is a great prof who is passionate about her field of study. Everything you should know is on the slides; she does the explanations in her lectures. The key thing about her class is conceptualization. Joy really wants you to grasp and understand her material. If you are confused, she has very accessible office hours. Really enjoyed her class.
This is the first time I had Dr. Stacey as a prof. I heard very mix reviews of her for other courses but for Biology and Society she's great. I highly recommend taking this course, it has presentations and debates, both of which I haven't done since high school but they aren't complicated. Its an easy A for a 4000 level course.
Literally the worst prof I've ever had. Had to read the entire textbook on my own bc her lectures were so confusing and a waste of time. Her office hours were no help, her exams asked abt stuff that she didnt even mention. Every class I left feeling more confused than I did walking in. The notes she posts are useless. Would give a 0 if I could
Hands down the worst professor. Stupidly unfair exams. Uses iclickers so you have to go to class. Unorganized and easily falls behind. Lectures are hard to listen to and are scattered. Exams contain multiple long answer questions in comparison to other profs giving group work exams. Questions do not match content covered. Wouldnt take again.
I like her lectures. Notes are useless out of the class, just a bunch of phrases. Don't mind the mandatory attendance, think it is beneficial. Tests are absolutely horrible! I believe that it is not equally fair that only our group had short answer questions! The answers that she wants to see require more time. Do not recommend this professor.
I really like her as a prof. You need to prepare for the lecture before class because the note is not very helpful if you don't understand what's going on.
WORST PROF AT U OF M MY GOD
I went into the course hearing how she was a Prof but when I had her for bio1020 she was completely different. She really helped me get through the course. Her test are not hard, preparing for short answers questions helped with understanding the material. Her lecture and notes were straight forward and all you needed to pass. Would take her again.
Notes and lectures were very unorganized, tests were graded unfairly compared to other sections. Would not recommend if you have a hard time teaching yourself materials and understandings from textbooks.
I LOVED taking Bio 1020 with Dr Stacy. The material was easy even though i didn't dedicate enough time to memorization (C+). i was an involved student and spoke up often during lectures. Going in i was concerned about her bad rating but found out quickly that was due to her course being a dvd lecture the previous year. SHE IS AWESOME!
So far my favourite first-year prof. Tons of iclicker. Tests were fair and should be nothing too crazy if you go to lecture and do the sample exam questions. For short answer questions on her exams, you can lock up a good portion of your mark, as you can pick 5 of 7 questions to answer. She is a sweetheart and a clear lecturer. Take her for sure.
the is hands down the worst prof at this university. stupidly unfair exams with pointless lecture slides. went to office hours because I was falling behind and the only thing I was told was to "study more"
Joy gives the class a lot of material in her lab, to the point where the lab is almost a course of it's own. However, if you study your ass off, pay attention and ask questions, you will do well. I found Joy to be very approachable and was very knowledgeable. If you don't like putting in the time, then expect to not do well in her course.
Joy is the perfect example of an Instructor who loves what they do. She is always hands on and loves to answer questions. She will always be in a great mood and is a "joy" to be around every lab. On the other hand she loves hard exams with the average around 50%. Easily the worst and hardest exams I took in my 4 Years was hers in this course.
Fantastic prof. always accessible outside of class and always replies to emails. She helped me with academic and provided me with advice regarding research opportunities that landed me a research position.
This class is tiny (< 20 students max) so you get a lot more involvement with the professor and classmates unlike BIOL1020. Content is very unique and is unlike any other BIOL classes I've taken. Memorization is not needed. Instead, it has high-school vibes: papers, group presentations, debates, etc. Guaranteed A if you show up but A+ is 95%.
Had her in Fall 2019. At first I was afraid because I saw her rating on here, but SHE WAS GREAT! She does i-clicker, but as long as you attend most classes, you should be good. I recommend signing up for her class with a friend. Her exams have word questions, but they are straight forward. I never had to read the textbook, lecture notes are enough.
Don't take this course if you have trouble teaching yourself a whole text book. Notes are useless, very brief phrases that don't even match up with what her quizzes and tests asked for. I ended up teach myself everything from the textbook and other websites just to make sense of her useless notes. Overall a nice person, but wouldn't take her again.
Dr. Stacey does write very difficult exams, that is true. But I had her for inverts lab and she is a fantastic person. I was super nervous going in based on things I had heard about her. She answers questions clearly and with enthusiasm and is clearly very passionate about invertebrates, which is always nice to see in a prof
She is an awesome prof who is very passionate about what she teaches! She also makes little jokes on the side which helps brighten up the heavy material. Thanks for an awesome semester! :)
Had Stacey in 2019. Don't believe what everyone tells you, she's such a great professor. Just make sure to attend every lecture and pay attention to what she says. I never even opened my textbook, and she doesn't have mastering quizzes. Exams have long answer, but pay attention in class and you should do great! You can tell she cares about students
Dr. Stacey is really helpful if you ask her for clarification. The tests were fair and tested exactly what I thought they would. You also get lots of quizzes throughout the year that are the same format as the exam. Make sure you have EVERYTHING from the lab because she won't tell you if you missed something and you'll be screwed if that comes up.
She is very bad at replying emails Takes forever to reply back . For her labs if you wanna score A+ it is not hard but you need to learn the stuff before going to labs . Even doesnot clears any confusion we have . one of the hardest lab ever taken .Sometimes it feels like she doesnot care for her students .
Dr. Stacey is amazing and this course was super eye opening, as we talked about various issues within the realm of science (anti-evolution, etc.). Highly recommend her and this class, as it's a nice change of pace from the usual biology course, with the focus shifting to discussion based learning rather than your standard memorization. A true gem!
She was super nice and accommodating to students. She really did care about the learning of her students. Lab midterm/final is strongly based on active participation in labs. Make sure if you are unclear about ANYTHING in the lab you ask for clarification because the lab manual is very vague in the information.
Dr. Stacey is very sweet and caring, she wants her students to succeed. She is always trying to help explain concepts and is very helpful at answering questions. Her labs do a good job at helping you understand the material but there is a lot of work to be done for the lab.
Ridiculous amount of content. Pedagogy not well thought out. Students can't reasonably learn this much material.
The lab content was a lot, comparable to lecture materials. Too much information cramped into a short amount of time. There is a lot of things to study but carries little weight in term of total percentage. I would write lab reports any time rather than spending time remembering so much details and forget everything shortly after. NOT RECOMMENDED.
Her lab tests are hard but okay if you study with the post lab quizzes. She's great about student accommodations and make-up labs if you can't go during your assigned slot. She's also super willing to answer questions and help with stuff.
The labs were a lot of work with iclicker, in-lab assignment, post lab quiz, lab exams etc. but Dr. Stacey is such a sweet soul - she walks around the room the entire duration of the lab answering student questions with a smile. Sample stations for the lab exams were very helpful. Anki's IO cards for the lab exams were really effective for me
Messy + unprofessional handouts, bad diagrams and images within that are barely useful, this entire lab is basically self taught. if you are seated at either sides of the room and not in the middle, good luck getting help or even hearing her. the average for the first exam was a 50. ppl who gave 4 or 5s likely did not take full course loads.
