Intermediate Algebra requires work; WELL worth efforts. Encourages study groups--doesn't force it. Provides extra credit opportunity. Serious about learning principles & understanding algebraic concepts. Pleasant instructor! Points = good grades!
This class was computer based. BIG MISTAKE! She doesn't help at all and her voice is so annoying. Be afraid very afraid!
good teacher, gives extra credit opportunities and explains well
she i one the good teacher i had
AHHH!!! Awful teacher! Very annoying and very judgemental. Picks favorites. Annoying voice. Half the time we corrected things that she said because they were wrong.
Great teacher. Gives awesome print out notes.Stay on your toes though because she makes alot of mistakes during lecture and it can get confusing if your not on top of it. Very fair...too bad doesnt teach higher math :(
most confusing useless teachers ive had at this school and im almost finished
I am so bad at math, have always hated it, but Lee was the best teacher I've ever had - and I took it summer quarter, which was tough. She is very helpful, friendly, wants you to do well. And her lectures make SENSE! Really nice teacher.
Joyce Lee sucks @ teaching. She's confusing and tends to be wrong when doing problems on the board.
This was a computer taught course(not internet). There was a decent amount of lecturing however. She is pretty helpful in answering your questions and is a likeable teacher.
Was an "A" student until I took her class. She's very confusing. On test days, she gives you limited time to complete the test. She not my first choice!
Lee is a fairly decent teacher...she gives so much homework but it is mainly all worth it in the end for the tests. On some tests, i got one careless mistake on a problem and she marked the whole thing wrong. Only advice i can give is get ready to study and attend class to understand. Be prepared!
Found her to be very confusing and not willing to explain anything. Really depends on the book to teach her class. If math is hard for you i do not recommend her class at all.
ms. lee, overall as a teacher, is pretty much average. she lectures daily and shows examples on the board. she does make a lot of mistakes while solving a problem on the board, but as long as you pay attention, you'd catch them. yes, she does talk a lot before taking tests, which cuts down our test taking time, i hate that the most!
Will not offer valuable help. Shows lack of willingness to answer questions, show steps. Requests lots of homework. overall not a good teacher.
very helpful. gives homework everyday which helps if you do it. takes attendance.
Best math teacher at BCC. Thorough explanations. Easy A. Lots of homework but it was worth it for the tests.
Ms. Lee is a nice person but I've had much better math teachers. She runs her classes in a very structured manner; she takes attendance every day, assigns homework every night, and does a lot of group work and in class assignments. Her ability to explain concepts to student who do not easily understand math is limited.
great teacher. its sad she's not teacher upper level math.
She is the worst teacher i had a bcc so far, try to avoid her!
Prof. Lee was very knowledgable and willing to help those who were wanting to help themselves. Definitely no nonsense and not at all naive. Reasonable amount of homework that really helped with learning material. She was very prompt in returning tests and homework and seemed very organized. I would totally reccomend her as a teacher.
Class was half online, half out of text. We used interactive software, which was neat, but her lectures were the most boring thing I have sat through since being here at BCC. She is nice and willing to help, so if you need this class, it would be a average pick. Not anything exciting about it, though.
She was decent at first, but after awhile, she tries to cram too much into one lesson and just ends up confusing you. Online tutoring was mandatory, thank god it was or else I never would have passed this class. Problems on board were wrong, bonus points if you catch it. A lot of work, but if you do it all, the class is easy. DON'T SKIP.
GOOD teacher....If your willing to put in the effort she likes that! Lectures were boring but its math so they all are! GO TO CLASS...it pays off in the end!
she can be a good techer at times, (if you follow her steps and Processes). Rather confusing lessons, lot of home work, smug attitude, very rude at times, made me and several students in my class feel dumb, actually called students out in class for being wrong, caused 3 people in my class to drop the class. Dont take this teacher.
I do not recommend this math class to anyone. Joyce Lee tries to cram too much into one lecture and runs out of time everyday. There is homework every night, but she randomly collects it. She is a bit weird, and is sometimes hard to understand. I had to get a lot of help outside of class in order to get the B that I have now.
I do not recomend Joyce Lee, she is by far the worst math instructor i've had at BCC! Do not take math 97 with her, she is NOT commitited to making sure students understand the material. She also doesn't write the exam herself, so she just expectes you to know automatically whats going to be on exams when she doesn't write it??! worst instructor!!
Proffesor Lee, is a teacher with good intentions: she wants you to succeed in her class. However, her good intentions are only focused around her class. Unfortunately, she is a little insensitive to people who have to take other classes and to people with math aversion. She assigns a tremendous amount of homework, that I have to admit, help me gain
Professor Lee assigns a tremendous amount of homework that I have to admit help me gain more math skills, but also overwhelmed mentally and left with little time and energy for other classes and personal time. I truly hope that professor Lee realize that not every student is free to study math all the time and some of us have families and jobs too.
Don't listen to these people, I thought that she was great, and was super organized and explained well, always asking for homework questions. She does asign homework, but that is the only way you are going to learn the material and she knows it...so quit complaining!! Of all the math teachers I had, I wish I could of had her all the way through.
Cool class. Great standards. Clear and concise. Cool teacher. She definately chose favorites in the class and gave them a bit more slack but..whatever.
Great 099 teacher! Very understanding and respectful. She encourages questions and makes herself available for help outside of class. Yes there is more homework than other math courses I have taken, but now I actually understand whats going on.
Joyce is a good teacher. She is very organized, tests and quizezs were handed back within a day or two. A good amount of work but the effort will pay off.
Joyce was always thorough on how to solve problems. She makes sure you get it (sometimes excessively). She gives lots of quizzes and classworks but I think the repition is good. The textbook sucks by the way (probably why there is so much homework). Unclear on what is expected for answers vs. what is. She wants you to succeed I feel. She is great!
I felt Lee was not very interested in the class and not that helpful. Sometimes she would talk down to you. It was mostly a computer based class so she didn't do much explaining although she could've
Outstanding teacher!!! Explains problems clearly and thoroughly. Cares about her students. Wants them to succeed. Trying to take her again for next class.
EXCELLENT TEACHER!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER CLASS. VERY HELPFUL AND WANTS HER STUDENTS TO SUCCEED. LEARNED A GREAT DEAL. WOULD RECOMMEND CLASS TO ANYONE!!!
Not very helpful. Class was computer based, she lectured maybe twice. She seems to just be there to grade tests. Attendance is very important - if you miss too many days she WILL grade you down and may threaten to fail you.
I really enjoyed this class. The teacher REALLY knows her stuff. You like to learn at your own pace- this is the class for you. Make sure you show up for class everyday or you get docked points. The teacher give toms of homework-but it is worth your while to do it!
loved Joyce. If you can attend regularly and do the homework, you will do well as you get extra credit for those. I wish I could take her for more advanced classes. With the Prof I have now, I appreciate and miss Joyce all the more! I did not have her for the computer based class, so that experience may be different
She is a very sweet lady. I took her asalgebra web based class on campus for math 097. i learned really easy with the material and if i had a problem she explained in a easy way. I got an easy A. just do your homework and you're good!
Joyce was a really good teacher. She was very organized and she cares for her students not just in my my class specifically but to her other classes as well. Explains the work so that it will be a bit easier to understand! Highly recommend her class, especially for higher classes.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND . she repeats herself during lecture to make sure the class understands whats going on TAKE HOME QUIZZES/MIDTERMS aka fabulous! Just make a friend in the class and you're good to go :) I took over for summer 2010 math and enjoyed her teaching style so much I took her again!
Joyce was great, Yes there is a lot of homework, but if you do it and do the practice test before each quiz out of the book. It is an easy A. She is very helpful, and will help you during her office hours. I wish she taught the upper levels!
she is a very nice teacher. she explains things very well and is very helpful. if u are struggling, let her know and she will work with you. her math098 class is fine but there is an online portion called ALEKS that sucks and is very time consuming so watch out.
could be more helpful
Joyce explains things several different ways for various learning styles. Very approachable and will do everything possible to help students succeed. Only complaint is the overabundance of homework. Math needs a lot of practice, but this is FAR beyond. If you work full time, this should be the only class you take if Math isn't your forte.
Had Joyce for 2 quarters now. Great teacher when she teaches. Likes computer layout for her classes. Cares about students. Highly recommend!
Extraordinarily helpful! Ask all the questions you want, she'll take the time to answer them and help you out. She kind of kills you with homework but it's not unmanageable. She's nice and wants you to pass her class
She is rude and will bash you if you miss only 1 hw assignment. I missed 1 hw assignment and got A's on everything else in the class but my overall grade was a B+..She never lectures and just has you do nothing but computer work to learn the material. She plays favorites to the old people as well. Glad I'm done with her
This is a really good teacher. There is a lot of Hw but if you do it..the tests are a breeze. Plus the take home quizzes are REALLY nice. Only bad side is that she gives you only 30-40 minutes to take a test/quiz. If you are a person who needs more time on tests I do not recommend this teacher. Other then that she is great!
She is a really great teacher, the class is mainly work on the computer but if you need help she is the best. If you do all your work the class is an easy A.
Miss Lee is awesome, I don't know who'll be my teacher next quarter but I'm sure I'll miss her . Very helpful and a sweet lady. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER! She makes math interesting.
Joyce is a great instructor and nice lady. She's definitely motivated to help students learn the material.
Find a better teacher if you can. shes nice, sometimes... her teaching method ridiculous, her lectures. not good. Also if she does not like you for whatever reason you will notice a lot of bul crap point docs on quiz'es.. Attending class everyday, doing my best while handling work/sports and other classes, yet shes doing her best to fail me...
Joyce is the first math teacher that I feel understood me. I took the class as a hybrid course and she always allowed me to come to her with questions, rather than over explaining material. When asking questions Joyce was never anything but approachable and helpful, and I will really miss her next quarter
I took is Hybrid class with her. It was terrible. She acted like answering a simple question was a chore and was condescending. There was practically no lecturing (the lecturing she did do was rushed and unclear at the end.) She wasn't flexible at all; it seemed that she was just there to teach the material and then leave. DO NOT TAKE!
Most of the time she would come in the class late and would only help a select number of students. She was nice, but gave too short of time to complete assignments and expected us to know everything.
Nice lady. Really helpful when you need it, although she does tend to ramble. Lots of homework but its all good practice. Overall easy A.
I am more of a computer based perrson rather then sitting in lectures. So this was a good class, got help and feedback with my work. She made sure we all understood it and helped extra if needed.
Worst teach I have ever had, not helpful, very unclear with explanations and unwilling to improvise with you. If you struggle with math I would NEVER take her
This is honestly one of the worst teachers I have ever had. I do fine in the class when I can teach myself the mathematics. But if I come across a math problem that I need help solving the teacher is absolutely no help. Not only does she mess up the problem half the time, but she is unwilling to actually help students.
Joyce is a great teacher, accept when you are taking your math class off of plato.com. each section has a graded evaluate, 8-10 ?'s on each evaluate. 4 unit tests that are graded as if it were a final. all HW is due the day of each test, but it is also signed daily by Joyce. To do well in her class, Show up Daily, she gives EC when alotta ppl skip
Really, really disappointing how she treats students. This rating is not a low blow to her, but a fair warning to people who are considering taking her class.
Trying to pass her class but she replies to my extensive and concerned emails with one word. Just passed her in the halls asking if we were still meeting and she greeted me with a huff.
I took Ms. Lee in the fall. After reading the reviews on this site I can not agree more. Do not take her class if you dont want to destroy your GPA. Be careful with any of her classes.
Joyce expects her students to show up, do the work, and be respectful. She makes time in her office for one on one tutoring and makeup exams. Attendance is mandatory and there are many other opportunities to keep your grades up. I had her for MATH 97 as well, and I owe much of my success to her. She is patient, kind, and I highly recommend her. :-)
Joyce is willing to help her students who try in her class. She gives extra credit when half of the class is missing. Her tests are easy but study a lot. She adds things that are not on the study guide or she tries to trick students. Make sure to study every detail for math problems. Always available during her office hours. Highly recommend her.
Very good teacher that gives you opportunity to succeed. Lectures are great, and takes personal interest in your success. She has designed her courses thoughtfully. Very upbeat personality. I highly recommend her.
Her teaching style is unprofessional, her tests are nothing like the homework you study for, I highly recommend you do not take this teacher for math 98. She is very biased and unclear when giving directions and is unrespectuful towards students
Her Teaching style is horrible , I can't believe I had this lady for a professor she makes no sense . You think your doing good but nope. I highly do not recommend this lady, if you do make sure to take advantage of of math tutors or other students for help, her method does not work.
Joyce is a really nice person but not that great of a teacher. She isn't very good at explaining math; if you ask her to clarify, she will usually just repeat the instructions rather than putting them into different words. The tests were much, much harder than anything done in class or on the homework.
worst math teacher ever!!! do not take! she is horrible at teaching, and will make you take notes on what NOT to do. very confusing and hard to learn
She is super nice and is helpful when she can be. Her teaching style isn't my favorite and I had to do a lot of learning outside of the classroom. But she gives a lot of extra credit and the homework is fairly easy to pass so as long as you use outside resources and communicate with her you will probably be fine.
Joyce can be very nice, but her lectures are very long and sometimes she doesn't make things very clear. She also gets flustered really easily... Her tests are fine, but make sure you do the homework every night or it will seriously drop your grade at the end of the quarter.
Joyce is a decent professor, but the key to being successful in her class is making sure you fully understand the material, which she is happy to go over in private if you do, by chance, not understand it. Participation often counts for extra points, so it will be to your advantage to be brave an and put your solutions and steps out for the class.
If you wan to understand the material, know what you are doing, then she is the one you must take. One of the most amazing and thoughtful math professors at Bellevue College. Don't pay attention to bad reviews. Those are not true and made by lazy and incompetent students. Good luck!
I loved this teacher a lot, first it was really easy for me, but then later got very hard not because I wasn't reading it properly, but I wasn't understanding the material enough, but Ms. Joyce is one of the best math teachers (first being Elizabeth Demong) although she works hard, she does care for me deeply, but miss one day, and she marks u off.
Mrs. Lee is a very sweet teacher who is always there to answer any questions you might have. I was surprised that all the math work was done online, and the teacher doesn't teach, unless you need more explaining of something. Work at your own pace, but make sure you don't fall behind. Great class! And teacher!
I took math 97 with Joyce and she is a very nice teacher and was very helpful. The only issue I had with her is that the homework and classwork is way easier that the problems on the tests. But other than that she is a good teacher and I liked her so much I am actually taking math 98 with her next quarter.
Joyce is a very sweet and good teacher. She takes time to make sure everyone understands. Homework was online but straightforward. She is very helpful and instruction is clear. I wish she taught 99, I would have definitely taken her class again.
Her lectures are so confusing. When no one asks her questions she gets bothered but if you are more than one question she walks away and then never comes back. By the end fo the quarter there were less than 10 students in her class and it started out full. She depends for other classmates to answer your questions but no one understands.
Nice teacher, very boring lectures, hard tests, lots of homework, attendance mandatory, very tough grader.
Very hard to follow her explanations. Very confusing style.
I wouldn't recommend taking her class at all. She writes out problems on the computer and doesn't move from her desk to help students. Many other math professors at the same college write it out CLEARLY on the board for everyone to see. Other professors will come around and help students on problems before moving on to the next, she doesn't.
This teacher is a very sweet woman. She cares & explains material but that is mainly examples of questions on in class sheets/homework. This class was lower than the class I tested into, so I already knew the info, but I literally pretty much unlearned it in this class. I say textbook required because you might want to teach yourself a little.
Very sweet teacher and gives back work instantly. Last math was years ago but class created confidence. Clear explaining of concepts but the tests do TEST your ability. All online homework is due last day causing frustration for those who had difficulty and could benefit from additional daily practice beyond the class work handed out each day ;P.
Joyce is an amazing professor! I not only passed my class but got an A for the first time in my life, math has always been a struggle. She is a great teacher, she teaches the content at the pace that the class is understanding the material. She makes herself outside of class hours for any questions. I would definitely recommend!
Worst instructor I have ever had, very smart and very kind but she will give you a test the first week and 2 weekly tests are 40% of your grade no retakes no late no nothing. 45 equations and 45 minutes to take the test if you are not finished at the end of 45 minutes so what get up and give me your paper, she adds parenthesis to equations that in
Smart but not a good teacher. Very fast paced, if you don't understand the material already then her lectures won't help you. Good for review but not for learning. Very strict about talking in class and attendance. Grades based on method used to solve problems rather than answer-- getting the right answer doesn't always mean a good grade.
Joyce Lee is one of the greatest professors in Bellevue College. She is teaching thoroughly, is always there for students, always has extra credit work to help. Those who complain about her, are not working much probably. I was scared to take her class when I read all the bad rates. BELIEVE ME! She is amazing . I am in touch with her until today!
I love this Professor, She will help you work out the problem even if she don't see the answer she works it with you.
Lees class had 0 lectures. The whole thing was taught by the computer. She gets annoyed if you dont understand a concept and ask for further explanation. doesnt know some of the material herself and her explanations are self-contradicting. Her grading is based only on whats easiest for her, not whats fair. Missed 3 qs on a quiz and got a 78%.
Miss. Joyce is an amazing teacher! she really cares about the students and tries to make sure everyone understands the material! she gives plenty of extra credit opportunities and is very flexible. the people who gave her bad reviews probably didn't put in the effort. I highly recommend her. Im taking her for math098 next term and i can't wait!
Joyce is probably one of my favorite teachers at Bellevue College. She's very nice and caring and accommodates to most situations. There's quite a bit of extra credit opportunities.
literallly the worst teacher Ive had at Bellevue so far. DONT. TAKE. HER. CLASS!!! she doesnt give any lectures or explain any of the material and has exams that are 40% of your overall grade and its 2-3 units learned on ONE exam. very sweet but I absolutely hate her lol
For someone who struggles with math, Joyce is very helpful as far as helping you better understand the material and is very willing to work with you to ensure your success in class. However, she is a tough grader; your lowest test score won't be dropped and practice exams will be graded as if you were taking the real test. Hard WorkDo Well.
7 challenging quizzes throughout the quarter but she drops your lowest which was great. She gives practice tests and is really approachable. Really isnt homework for class, but you have to complete a certain amount online over the course and if you dont keep up its gonna be tough. Really disliked online work, too much with all the tests in class.
I had a real hard time with Algebra so I was quite vocal in class about asking questions. There were many time I asked her to repeat, restate, or use an analogy to which she graciously tried. Then we asked for using different color markers, labels and clearly noted lectures, she did it. LOVE THIS WOMAN. I'm in 138 now and reference my 097 Lee notes
My class started in person but because of the corona virus it was moved online. once the class was moved online the final was two weeks away. she decided that it would be a good idea to make what was originally a optional 8th homework assignment a mandatory one and make a new quiz with new info not covered in class due two days before the final.
A great teacher but sometimes goes through material really fast.
I took this class online and it was tough. im usually really good at math but since she doesnt give any lessons with online she just makes u do aleks. the tests are hard and shes doesnt teach but rather assigns homework and lets aleks teach for her. one thing i will say is if u do have a question she will try her best to help you. Study Pass
Seeing other reviews, it seems that Joyce possibly thrived better in a classroom setting. Since Covid, online teaching has proved to be a struggle. There are a lot of miscommunication issues as to where assignments are submitted, when tests are open to take, etc. if you may have tech issues she is not forgiving or understanding.
With zoom, cameras need to be on. She is very easy to follow and takes great notes. Just follow along and copy down her notes and you will be just fine. Solid prof all around.
I took this class online because COVID. I honestly have taken math and have always passed with an A or B. This was my first time EVER receiving such a low score. Teacher hardly responded to emails. It was very hard to receive instructions on how to complete the assignments. Directions were very scarce and hard to understand. Never will take again.
I haven't touched math for 20 years and was a bit intimidated before taken this class. Professor Lee was a surprise to me as she was so great at her teaching. She made the subject so clear and easy to grasp. I am forever grateful for her. I hope you can choose her for your study.
Mid at best.
Amazing Professor, lots of homework though so don't fall behind or mess around. Very accessible for office hours and you have unlimited attempts on all homework until the turn-in attempt. You will have a midterm test and a final, and lots of study guides are given to you via Canvas.
If you struggle with math and learning concepts is difficult for you, or you need extra help, avoid her online class. While she may be a good teacher for in-person classes, her online class was a nightmare. There are zero lectures and the entire class is taught through the online textbook. This was a 100% self-taught class.
Do not take this class if you rely on the instructor giving lectures. Nothing was taught by her, everything was through an online math website. All you did was watch videos. Do not take this class if you are NOT looking for a self-taught course.
Test heavy. Not much time given on tests. Caring teacher did not request dshs but she gave it to me any ways. Test heavy. Was failing by mid quarter, withdrew for the w and tried again thru another teacher and got an A+. Joyce is kind but difficult teacher. If you can do 120 word question tests in less than 40 min you'll be fine.
Nice teacher but literally didnt teach anything. I cant believe she can actually get paid for this. 100% self taught. The amount of daily homework and learning with no guidance is INSANE. Not only did you have to self learn an entire section daily, but also do an average of 30 homework questions daily, and a test every week. I was drowning in math.
It is self taught class. I wouldn't take this class again
Spare yourself, please. This class is absurd for being under 100 level. The sheer amount of homework is outrageous. You will eat, sleep and breathe math with no breaks. This class is completely self-taught, you're expected to complete multiple in-depth (each a minimum 30 questions) Pearson sections each week, followed by an Exam each week.Dont take
Professor doesn't do any lectures, it's entirely a self-taught class. Practice tests are mandatory and graded before each exam (weekly), daily homework is 15-35 questions, and entirely just busywork. Final exam practice test due a day before the real exam takes 4-5 hours and is 110 questions, and there's regular worksheets you have to print.
Awful instructor and terribly unprofessional
I had a semi-complex question regarding an assignment, it took her 4 days to send me a one word response. The worst bit of the class was the program, not the professor, but she certainly didn't make it any easier.
Apparently if I dont have neat, organized scratch paper, I dont get credit for the exam. Would also like to note that the homework will say its due in a week but in reality its due today or else you can't take the exam. Also Professor is unwilling to work with me about these issues.
just don't
Your entire life will be math. Do not take if you have another hw-heavy class. 10-30 question homeworks (same amount of time, ~1-2 hrs each) every day, so you can't fall behind + worksheets and a 100 question non-optional practise final. Professor herself was lovely the only time I met her but save yourself the migraine
