Very good style of teaching. However needs to be a bit more organized on the board. Gives extra usefull material.
Sherpa is one of the best teachers Mt Hood has. if you are dreading chemistry take Sherpa she is very helpful. I struggled through Chemistry in high school and I absoluetly hated it. I took at MHCC and loved it and she has a great teaching style that helps
IT'S ONLY MY FIRST DAY, BUT HER LECTURES ARE INCREDIBLE. SHE USES VERY SIMPLE EXAMPLES THEN SLOWLY INCREASES THE CHALLANGE. I LIKE HER SO FAR. OH, AND NOW SHE USES POWER POINT SO NO MORE SLOPPY AND DISORGANIZATION.
DR. SHERPA IS A TEACHER WHO TRULY CARES FOR HER STUDENTS. SHE IS NOT SNOBBY BECAUSE SHE HAS A PH.D. CHEMISTRY IS A HARD SUBJECT FOR ME AND THE CLASS DOES EXPECT YOU TO DEDICATE A LOT OF TIME FOR A B GRADE OR BETTER. I HATED THE WEEKLY QUIZES BUT THAT'S IN ALL CHEM CLASSES. IF YOU LIKE A TEACHER WHO CARES, TAKE HER.
YES, CHEMISTRY IS HARD SO IT DIFFICULT NO MATTER WHO TEACHES THE CLASS.DR. SHERPA IS NIT-PICKY WHEN IT COMES TO GRADING BUT SURLY SHE CARES FOR HER STUDENTS. IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT HER CLASS AND WILLING TO GIVE YOUR BEST I THINK YOU WILL LEARN A LOT FROM HER TEACHING. THE COURSE DOES GO SUPER FAST FOR THOSE W/OUT A STRONG MATH FOUNDATION.
I can't speak for the 200 level classes, but this class was probably as painless as it could be and I almost enjoyed it. She comes in on her own time to help students for mid-term prep.
This class is Very Hard. If you miss one class you are going to be lost. She doesn't explain things very well. I felt lost alot of the time and im sure most of the other students did too. Nice lady but a vary hard class!
A great, passionate, caring instructor who makes chemistry fun and accessible.
Dr. Shepra is an excellent teacher, easy homework,
She is a great teacher. I never took chem in HS but was able to keep up. In fact with her guidance I managed to ace the class. Pay attention, take good notes, do all homework, and extra credits. You'll love her class, fun, excited, and inspired.
She I'd great
THE BEST IN THE WORLD!!!!! I LOVE THE SHERPANATOR!
Chemistry is HARD, but she made it very easy to understand. She would explain until we understood. She KNOWS what she is talking about, most knowledgeable! But she is a bit unapproachable because she has somewhat of a hippy "you kill the world driving your SUV to school" vibe. TAKE HER, be prepared to get ridiculed sometimes if you're not 'green'.
Sherpa is great. She is very clear and she is a tough professor, but she is very helpful and is generally interested in her students.
Sherpa is fantastic! Her teaching style is unique & fast paced, but she is very clear and concise when presenting it. She has plenty of options for 1-on-1 time, tutoring & repeat lectures instead of holding up the entire class - making it harder down the road. Her sense of humor is great, but if you're lazy & don't expect to work, look elsewhere.
Sherpa is a great teacher! She explains things perfectly, answers questions in class, offers office hours and even tutors in the LSC. I love that she uses the blackboard because it makes it simple to take notes and follow along. The book is hardly needed but is a good resource to look at hard topics after lecture.
Very awesome and passionate teacher. This is not an easy class but if you work hard and attend lectures you will be fine. She gives ample opportunity to meet with her if you are falling behind or have questions. Take Sherpa!!
Pretty much an awesome prof. Loves that she uses the blackboard - may get a lil disorganized but still easy to follow. Makes class enjoyable, esp. when she throws candy students bring her (warning! she has bad aim! haha!). Very nice, just don't ask stupid questions - no one likes that. Pay attn in lecture & do your hw. You'll end up loving chem.
Sherpa expects you to THINK (gasp!) I know it's cruel, but if you cant handle it, don't take the class. On the other hand, if you're into that sort of thing, her classes are the best. She wants you to succeed & is a tremendous help, all you have to do is put in the effort.
One of the few Prof. who really care about her students. She'll remember you for years to come.
Sherpa is the best professor Mt. Hood has to offer. She doesn't just teach, she helps you learn, and she cares about her students success. If Sherpa gives you advice on how to succeed, do it and you will.
An AMAZING teacher. If all teachers were as passionate about their subject we would all be the better. But don't go in thinking she will hold your hand, you have to do your work. But she gives you every chance to do well in the class. I took 3 terms with her and got an A in all of them. Do your work and you will too.
Fantastic teaching style with premade lecture notes and a fun walkthrough on the blackboard. Her class becomes a close knit group that everyone helps each other out...WE were the ones that filled up the science department lobby studying together every day! She doesn't just teach, she helps you learn, best professor ever!
Amazing teacher! She has passion for chemistry and she wants her students to succeed! The world needs more teachers like her :)
She is the best.
I took 104 & 105 from Cohen and was completely lost in her classes. So i took a year off, and then took 106, but with a diff. teacher. Sherpa shes the best chemistry teacher!!!!! I got a A in her class. And I worked as hard as I did in Cohen's class and received C's. GO SHERPA!!!!!!
Best chemistry instructor MHCC has to offer.
She is the best Chem teacher Mt. Hood has to offer. Show up for class, Do your work, and you will get an A. No need to do extra work on your own. Sherpa will prepare you for whatever you go on to.
Simply the best. So helpful and clear in her lectures. Chem can be difficult but there are a lot of points in the class so it's not impossible to get a decent grade if you really put forth the effort to do all the assignments.
Best professor at MHCC, hands down. Hopefully they appreciate how much she contributes to her students!
Very creative, teaches with flare and fun!
Hot and helpful!!
She is an AMAZING teacher! So helpful! You need to attend class and actually listen to the lectures to understand anything. But her teaching style is amazing. If she explains it I understood it. She is so helpful, funny and caring towards her students. Such a smart teacher. She made class fun. Did tons of experiments (Made ice cream x2) Love her!
She is great! She clearly tells you what is going to be on exams. She gives great practice quizzes and extra credit that actually helps you in the class. She even comes in on Sundays to help her students review for exams. She is a great instructor and I highly recommend her
Best chem teacher ever. I get to take her the next 3 terms and i'm stoked. great teacher not easy but great. be on time don't be loud and annoying and try hard. shes not impossible to pass.
Dr Sherpa makes chemistry fun
Highly recommend this class!!!
She is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is very helpful and eloquent in her explanations. The key is to try hard and she will meet you half way, she won't hold your hand through it but will help if you are willing to be helped and are willing to try.
Sherpa is the best teacher I have ever been privileged enough to learn from. She is clear, but fast and furious in her delivery. The lab hours are fun too, take her for sure if you have a chance!
Great chemistry instructor. She is a Dukey and she is nice on the eyes.
Awesome instructor. Presents material very clearly and does fun activities. If you show up all the time and turn in everything, you are sure to get an A. extra credit Qs for tests :)
I love her as a teacher! She fun and entertaining as long as you go to every class and do the homework! Do not be afraid to go to office hours. I found those hugely helpful! But DO NOT miss class. I got sick towards the end and missed two classes. I struggled for the last few weeks of class. She willing to help some but just does not have the time.
She's very nice and helpful if you're a stellar student, otherwise she looks at you like you're wasting her time. Defensive and condescending.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE SHERPA! Yes, she may grade hard and give lots of homework, but without it YOU'D NEVER LEARN THE MATERIAL or do well on tests. I am not a big chem fan, but walking away from CH223, I have learned more from her than any other class or professor (went to OSU). She is an amazing professor and loves her students! (Took her 221-223)
Sherpa is an alright teacher overall. Yes, she will help you if you go to her office hours but she doesn't give enough time for lectures and exams. She only gives 1 hour for midterms and then is surprised when no one does well. She is a cool person but I don't think I'd take another class from her, not worth the stress.
Amazing teacher. She gives you the tools to succeed in college and beyond. Quirky sense of humor, lots of fun demos, and her students from prior classes came to help us.
Best chemistry teacher. Very clear, nice and funny. It's chemistry so you will have lots of homework, quizzes, and tests, but if you keep with her lectures you will do great! Make sure to go to her office hours if help needed. She makes chemistry fun and her experiment demonstrations are awesome.
Chemistry is a challenging subject, by Joyce makes it very interesting and enjoyable. Easy grader, not an easy class. Hard material but she will give partial credit for missed steps. ALWAYS willing to help students. Utilize her office hours where you can get assignments checked by her before turning in. Best teacher I have had at MHCC. Very kind.
Fun teacher overall. She is more than willing to help and leaves herself available quite often. Protip: Her tests are actually challenging and you're not given a whole class period to complete it. If you do not understand a problem, do not get stuck on it for more than three minutes! Move on and go back to it later.
She actually wants you to get a great grade! She will work with you and help you understand what is going on. She is a great teach and explains things in a way that you can catch on.
Dr. Sherpa is an amazing professor. Had her for three terms and she was very helpful. Go to her office hours and network; it will help you tremendously. Homework and extra credit will help you understand concepts. Potlucks, cookies, and gnomes are her favorite. I loved her class so much I'm one of her lab assistants now. Have a pHantabulous time!
Dr. Sherpa is simply the best teacher I have ever had. She works harder than you do to get your grades back to you and keep you on track.
Sherpa is outstanding and one of the smartest people ive ever met. USE HER OFFICE HOURS
I actually had to drop out of her class because I got fairly sick but while I was sick before I decided to withdraw from school she helped me tremendously not fall behind, she wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing before she let me move onto anything. I absolutely adored her. She is a hard teacher but she is a teacher who truly cares for us.
You know how professors say no questions is a stupid question? Not the case here. I constantly felt put down to the point where I wouldn't want to go to class or lab. She is a better professor in a small setting, not a setting where there are 60+ students. I would not ever take her again even if the class was free.
Dr. Sherpa is an amazing teacher. She explains very good. Remember, chemistry is hard, to get an A, you will have to work for it. Also she gives EXTRA Credit and that is helpful.
She is the best professor you will ever get the chance to take. She helps you tremendously and makes you love chemistry. Office hours and extra credits are a must. Gives great feedback and doesn't let you move on to the next topic if you are not ready. If I could take another class with her, I would totally do it.
She gives great lectures and clearly knows and loves her subject inside and out. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities, time to study before quizzes, and help when you ask for it. My biggest complaint is that she treats you like an idiot when you ask "dumb question," which is discouraging. I've never had to work harder for a grade.
I had the pleasure of spending 9 months with Dr. Sherpa, and can say she will make or break you academically. She is very demanding in her course load and presents 6 pages of homework, 1-2 quizzes, and 1 lab report due PER WEEK of the term. Her grading is VERY clear and she will give you amazing feedback. She writes ALL of her own material.
I would not recommend Sherpa, take Bernadette for a more reasonable experience. Many people like Sherpa because of her knowledge and unique problems: her majestically story problems. But because she input all the extra clutter on test, etc it is very hard to get past it if you arnt a very good test taker or with how much time vs how many problems.
Made me fall inlove with chemistry!
Lower your ego and bring on thick skin, Sherpa is seriously out of touch sometimes and can be absolutely rude. She even joked about how someone walked out of class because of HER attitude,Fortunately she has amazing TA's, and the grading is clear. But lectures are incredibly unfocused and completely sped through, Labs only have written instructions
One of the best science courses I've ever taken. My only critique is that if you ask a dumb question, she'll let you know :) Other than that, it was a really solid class. Guidelines were clearly stated in the syllabus, and she was always there to help during her office hours. Try not to miss any lectures - you'll regret it.
Sherpa is amazing, knows her stuff! But be prepare it's not a easy class. Her labs are easy, but she moves at a fast pace w/ lectures, lots of information & math. Go to class everyday, quizzes every week you don't want to be behind. Highly recommend going to her office hours for help! Do her extra credit and really study for her class not a easy A.
Sherpa was amazing! I was struggling in the class, but she helped me out. She kept pushing me and she helped out each student with their chemistry problems. She was very helpful with preparing for the exams and quizzes.
Joyce was awesome at first... until you ask her questions I went to office hours to ask questions and get help and asked in lab to almost 90% of the time be ignored or rudely told to "just figure it out" she likes to rush through a lot of material and like most chemistry profs thinks her way is the only way. I advise to find a different section
Great chemistry professor. Makes things very easy to understand and goes at a good pace.
Sherpa has energetic lectures, a true passion for what she does, and she knows her stuff. But you must be prepared to invest time (may be rough w/ full-time job), have a clear mind, and be unafraid to ask questions. You will develop important skills beyond just chemistry in her classes, which is part of what makes her the phenomenal teacher she is.
Great Prof. She sets aside time twice a week for a study session that she is present for so she can answer questions while you do your homework. She offers extra credit and always has time for her students. Her lectures are old school chalk board prof. style. Best Chem prof I have ever had.
Sherpa is quite proud and doesnt like to be interrupted AT ALL. She has moods where some days she wont have a problem with questions while other days shell make you feel like youve asked the stupidest question ever. She writes out all the homework/worksheets herself & the exams are very close to the HW so you dont feel surprised by anything.
Sherpa is an amazing teacher! i am taking her for all of my chem classes. Before this term i have never taken a chemistry class in my life and she teaches the class as if no one knows what anything is so she teaches you everything you need to know and explains everything in detail! you just have to be in class and in lab to be caught up.
Super glad to have her for a prof! She's sassy and keeps it real yes, but she's SHARP and has the class structure down to a science. So good to have a teacher who actually teaches and is on the ball. I learned so much with her. Sherpa knows what's shes doing and assigns specific hw that actually makes you learn. And she smells awesome.
She's so amazing, definitely have to work for a good grade and the class is jam-packed with material so keep up! She is willing to help and is really good at explaining things but you should try to get on her good side right from the start and stay there! She may seem cute and little but she'll go off at you if you piss her off by being careless.
Hands down my favorite class Ive taken, impacted my life in the best way!! I know Chemistry can be intimidating, and tedious. Sherpa adds a fun twist to somewhat boring information, she will be as invested in your learning as you are. Do the work and get an A! If she sees that you arent trying or dont care, she wont either. Loved her!!
Quizzes every week, wants you to understand material. 3 midterms! GO TO OFFICE HOURS! she will help you, if you want to learn. She doesn't want you to waste her time. She is really good at what she does. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! It helps you learn the material even if you are getting a good grade. She will work with you, if you'll work with her. GOKOI!
(This is a continued rating) Koi is an inside joke about coeeficients... Someone thought she had said koi fish not coeeficient... She ran with it all quarter long. She told us that she'll will use it indefinitely. (I hope that she will)
I'm writing this review a few years after I took her class. A friend asked me about chemistry faculty. Dr. Sherpa may be knowledgable and be well educated (she makes sure to remind everyone that she has her PhD), but she comes across as having a huge chip on her shoulder. She is condescending and rude. Take Harnish. Same expertise, more helpful.
For anyone with no chemistry background, I would not recommend taking chemistry with Sherpa. Shes nice and will help you when you ask but you have to make sure you know what you are trying to ask beforehand. She will make you feel bad for asking simple questions so be aware of that. There are quizzes on every lecture day. Extra credit is offered!
Sherpa was a teacher who was ready to help. Take advantage of office hours and learn the material on the first day of class also go to tutoring. YOU DO NOT want to slack the material builds up what you learn is applied to the next lecture. For example, the class was on Tuesday and quiz on Thursday. If you want to succeed you will work for your A.
If you ever get the chance to take a chemistry class taught by Sherpa DO IT. She makes sure that everybody is up to speed and is very involved with all of her students. We had a small class that met 2 hours before lecture everyday to do the HW together. Sherpa even joined most of the time. Definitely in the top 3 best classes Ive ever taken.
Sherpa is one of the best professors out there. She makes sure that her students succeed. She cares for her students and that they truly learn the curriculum. If you want to do well in a chemistry class take her for it;) Her class is a lot of work but she is a great teacher that you will love.
You will not go wrong if you choose Joyce. She is absolutely awesome. Loves what she does and is passionate. Just do the work, follow her advice, and you will learn a ton and get a good grade too.
Best teacher ever. Great lectures. Cares a LOT about each individual student. Really works with you and for you! Gives extra credit opportunities throughout the class. Couldn't have succeeded without her. She is hilarious and warm.
Lot's of coursework online. The lectures are live but you are expected to watch other 1-2 hour videos a week. It's a 5 credit hour class but with online videos/labs it's more of an 8-10 credit hour class. Impossible to pass if you have a full time job, but if your 18 with no job you will probably do fine. Stay on top of the homework.
One of the most amazing professors I have ever had! She is truly amazing and will help you succeed if you put in the effort. If you do your work and watch the lectures you can get an A. She also gives lots of extra credit opportunities. I easily ended with over 100% and got to opt out of the final because of that. Notes were allowed on exams.
An easy A, but you won't really receive the education you paid to receive with this class. Most of every lecture is a nutrition rant or a rant about "vibrations and prayer". Extremely lecture-heavy, as in 9 hours of lecture for one week sometimes. Labs were time-consuming but didn't really teach anything relevant about chemistry, more so nutrition.
Dr. Sherpa weaves chemistry in with real life, providing perspective on WHY understanding chemistry is important. She grades generously, gives constructive feedback on most assignments, and provides lots of extra credit opportunities. Online class has lots of lectures, but they are recorded which is a nice perk. Tests are open notes.
Dr. Sherpa is the best Chem teacher. She cares about you understanding the material, gives really good feedback, and is an easy grader. Doesn't use a textbook, so make sure you NEVER skip class. Lectures were fun, and she always brought real life context into the material to help you understand. Very quirky and inspirational.
Easily the best chem teacher I've ever had. I was dreading returning to chemistry after a long break, but Sherpa turned it from my most dreaded subject to one of my favorites. She's incredibly caring and wants you to succeed - but you will have to work for it. She's funny, she's quirky, and has the best energy out of any professor I've ever had.
Joyce is very kind, and her class is easy. She grades the homework during the zoom classes. She does make you complete 2 presentations so if that's not something you're comfortable with I wouldn't take her. Her tests are pretty heavy, but a lot of the questions are from the homework.
The most personable and helpful teacher I've had. Helped and encouraged me throughout one of my least favorite subjects.
Took her for Chem 221 to 223. She is understanding, fair, and patient. She is lecture heavy but I like that. She post her lectures on YouTube so you can re-watch and that was my saving grace. She offers a lot of extra credit. I wish she taught O-Chem so I can take her class one more time.
Chemistry is a difficult topic when you've never taken it before, so it can be intimidating. She made class fun and exciting. She is very understanding. She's willing to stay after class to help students. She is very good with communication via email. More importantly, she wants to see all of her students succeed. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER.
Her class is tough! but she is very kind and understanding. I really struggled with the tests i failed every single one yet I'm passing with a C! Do the extra credit come early and talk with her, she's there to help.
No quizzes or tests, mostly weekly challenges as assignments aswell as you will need to do 3 short presentations throughout the term on certain topics. Attendance is mandatory and she's strict on due dates but other than that, she's very chill and doesn't heavily grade assignments.
This was my second time taking a class with Joyce Sherpa. Had her for chem for health professionals! I recommend her, yes she does give you a good amount of homework but she's very forgiving, offers chances for extra credit, and will help you with homework questions! She's quite the personality but the best teacher to have fun with in a hard class!
you should only take chem w/ Dr. Sherpa. I had a different instructor & had to drop it which left me in fear. Dr. Sherpa makes the material fun, understandable, she's incredibly supportive & kind. she wants you to pass! Chem can be difficult. She does an incredible job at teaching this course. I now love chemistry & would take again and again.
Go over her blackboard videos. Do the study sets. The subject matter is hard and there's a lot of it crammed into one quarter. There's a reason it's a 5 credit class. Dr. Sherpa is quirky with an eccentric demeanor but she wants everyone to succeed. The exams are HARD but she gives extra credit. You can get an A if you're disciplined (or smart.)
Professor Sherpa gives a lot of homework but also a lot of extra credit. As long as you do your work, show up to class, and ask questions you can pass this class. She is very flexible with assignments and late work. Be careful when taking this class because if you are not ready to have your worldview challenged you may not succeed.
I took 3 courses under Sherpa and she assigns a lot of work but always gives feedback so you can get 100% on it and all this work balances out tests so even if you're not the best tester, the other work helps so much. She is very passionate and cares about her students doing well. She helped me get an A in BIOCHEM!! That speaks for itself!!
3 midterms, 2 pres. You get docked pts by peers so it's impossible to get 100% on presentations. She gets snippy/calls you out in front of others. The lecture videos are so long and only 2% of info in there you actually need. She tells you to "google" hw questions. Hw assn. are too long + wrk sheets.
She is very caring and makes sure you get full credit on worksheets and homework as long as you complete them. She ensures you understand the material and helps you pass. I wasn't doing great at first, but by turning in my homework and staying on top of things, I passed with an A. I definitely recommend her class!
Professor Sherpa makes chem fun and manageable. Her assignments are fair, and she genuinely wants students to succeed. I found unstuck AI super helpful for study prep too.
There's 3 exams & 2 presentations in total. It may seem time consuming & hard to do but if you put the time in, communicate & put your best foot forward you're guaranteed a good grade. She gives excellent feedback & multiple extra credit opportunities.
If you show up to every class, pay attention and ask questions then you will pass. It is a tough class but she is available to help and wants you to succeed.
Overall great teacher, gives so many opportunities for you to have a good grade and truly wants you to pass. However I noticed she does pick on some students, especially if you are ethnic or not her usual sight.During some of the lectures she did make some unnecessary comments, but if that doesn't bother you and you just want a good grade go for it!
You will have presentations & weekly homework, best to stay ahead in this class. As for Joyce, she makes racial comments that are inappropriate and will make a fool of you in front of the classroom if you have an unhealthy snack or question that she deems stupid. I've never felt so uncomfortable in a classroom before. BEWARE!
Professor Sherpa was a good teacher overall. I appreciated the individualized comments she made on the turned in homework assignments. However, as I took an A&P class in the same term, she seemed to be very insistent on her point of view and didn't necessarily look at both sides all the time. Otherwise it was a fun and eye opening class.
I took a year of night school just to take Dr Sherpa's chem classes. I thought she was great and really got me to like chemistry.
If you love cooking, trying new experiences, and have time, take her. Other than that don't. In my case it was little hard to do the recipes, because it took me time to do them plus the purchase of ingredients and cleaning after. It was an eye opening class, my health got better. But useful tip is be ahead of her class. Homework easy but heavy.
