portly, enthousiastic guy. not an easy class but ive had worse profs.
This class is very challenging but interesting for the bio/premed person. His exams are mult choice but very diff than ur normal mult choice. They are hard. But you learn ALOT.
he was definitely very hard. i took him in the summer, and the exams were tough. i dropped the class b/c i couldn't stand it anymore. he's a nice guy, though.
Good fellow, not easy but you learn a lottt...exams are hard...but fair
when your heart goes pitter patter...you'll know soon enough...
This guy seriously expects you to know concepts like the back of your hand (fair enough - that's why you're taking the class, to learn something) but the thing that really gets me is that he expects you to memorize silly little details that don't mean a thing. Don't take him if you can help it.
took him in the summer. exams are tough. if you can score better than the average on the first exam, you're going to fail, b/c exams just keep on getting harder. 30% failure. 70% C or below. 15% B, 15 A.

spirited guy BUT can't understand his accent sometimes. his lectures are ramblings... not planned, helpful, or indicative of what'll be on exams. supa tuff exams...
Good!
He's a very nice in person but his exam is tough. His lecture and handout isn't helpful. Just read the text book and memorize every single thing. If I knew it's gonna be this hard and this much time consuming course, I wouldn't have taken it. However, you learn a lot!
VERY interesting class. I learned a lot. Tests are not easy, but it's not his fault because subject material is very complex. Just write down every word he says and understand all of the concepts and you'll be fine.
Don't take this class with him! not only can you not understand him because he mumbles, but he rushes through the lectures. Then he changed the book for the class but the exams are still based on the old book when he hasn't reviewed a lot of the material from it. He sucks.
Hard to understand the accent, but that doesnt make him a bad person. He is really nice. Great prep for those who want to learn. Study the entire book. Lecture notes are vague. Book is good. Pick and choose info from the book to understand thoroughly.
I am taking this class rite now and I am not going to say that it is easy... however, if you wanna get your money's worth and actually learn something instead of getting an A without really learning much... take this class... u not only learn about endo. but u also get a chance to brush up on ur physiology and gen. bio which in turn helps u in all
This professor is very good, and he teaches the material in an understanding way. He often compares concepts to real life or simple ideas. He's a funny and nice guy too, and he puts nice music on before class starts. The material is not easy but is very interesting and a good refresher of physiology. The professor is also very helpful and I see him
This class is very hard, but it's also one of the BEST bio courses at Rutgers. You will learn more in this class than any other class you take. Advis has a thick accent, and his notes are sometimes vague, but he seems to be a nice, funny guy. Read the book THOROUGHLY and attend class. You will feel like you truly accomplished a lot at the end.
This class is very hard, but it's one of the BEST bio courses at Rutgers. You will learn more in this class than any other class you take. Advis has a thick accent and vague notes, but he is a nice, funny guy who plays cool music before class. Read the book THOROUGHLY and attend class. You will feel like you truly accomplished a lot at the end.
Great guy, great material, crappy class that is boring, vague, and confusing. His exams are hardly based on all the material, but rather one or two points he has a crush on.
VERY Hard, Exams were hard. He is a very nice guy and will help you if u ask him. He is makes corny jokes. He's alright.
Advis is the best prof at RUTGERS, no doubt the class is reaLLy hard, and the exams are HAAAARDD....but if you go to class regularly and read the book you should be fine...He is very helpful, and cares about his students doing well...i would take this class cuz you learn more then any of the other science courses put together
hard class, exam hard... but with good curve got an A in the class with two Bs and final exam C...
glad that i am takingthis class cus its not hard at all.. professor very friendly and helpful...
very hard exams but great curve at the end. Got a B+
E Z A
Material are straight forward.. what you need to know are clear and easy to understand.. just have to memorize them.. thatz all. I probabaly would give it 4 stars. Easy B but have to work a lil to get an A
avoid him! do not take him during summer.. but take it in fall or spring with him.. he tends to be hard as hell in summer becuase i took it with him twice,... summer F and fall I got a A. weird, isn't it.
Professor Advis is on the student's side. If you want to take endocrinology, i strongly advis you take it over the summer with him because during the summer,he is lot easier and bigger curve since he knows that most of the student doesn't really have time to study. my first exam was F, second C and last A, i got A for final grade
Take him during the summer because he understands that student has less time over the summer to study. Also, I am not sure if this is true or not but people said he gives better curve for the summer endocrinology. I guess its true because I always get in the average grade of the whole class and I ended up with a B+.
I took it with him last year's summer (2005) and got an A. Didn't go to class and scored like 80% on all two exams and a final. He is easy with a good curve.
Make sure you take Endocrinology with Dr. Advis because he is an easy A. No textbook needed. But he tries to get everyone to buy one. Oh yea, if you score average on every exam. You are sure to get a B+.
EASY A. Don't buy the textbook because he's lecture are what you need to know for the exam. Big CURVE at the end. I got an easy A
no doubt one of the best professor at rutgers. mad easy just like professor pieca if you took biochem with him. highly recommended.
general endocr. with dr. advis for sure. do not take it with anyother professor.. just work a lil and you will sure to get an A
you could be shocked at the end on how much curve he does. and plus, you will learn a lot too. just don't worry about the exam. even thought he tries to scare his students but at the end, he give a really nice curve as like 70% all will get B or above. he also heard that the lowest grade he gives is D. thatz if you really don't study at all
if he says book is required. he's joking, if he says class is hard. he's trying to scare you and make u study. believe me. the class seems really hard and overwhel with materials but if u get the main idea of the lecture you will be fine. also he doesn't give lower than a D to any students
If you are taking this class in the summer I advise you DO NOT TAKE IT!!!!!! His class in the summer is HORRIBLEEEE...IT IS DAMNNN HARDDD..I busted my ass to study in his class and i couldnt take it so I dropped it. It is better to take it in the fall. He can't teach. His notes SUCKKK. The exam is 100 questions cumulative. dont take in summer
Easy A is such a bull. You gotta study hard core to get an A from his class. The course itself is hard. You'll learn so much from the class but I'm not going to med school so it was too much for me. He's very generous and nice. Textbook sucks but his lecutre is somewhat hard to comprehend so it's better to have textbook.
I enjoy this guy. He is kinda like the adorable old neighbor from next door. He improved my study habits 100% and taught me some new tricks to.... His class is difficult but well worth the effort.
I barely beat the class average on the first two tests, but did great on the final and got an A! He gives an awesome curve, and you will learn so dam much about the human body. This course is a must for pre-med students.Be prepared to do alot ofstudying at least 7 days before the tests.Go to every class.Dont take more than 1 other hard class.Use wiki
i took animal phys. w/ advis. I recommend taking systems phys, b/c this class is still in its guinea pig phase. advis is very difficult to understand and confusing. you must put ALOT of effort in this class. 4 exams, each 100 questions. opportunities for extra credit.
Nice guy... But I don't agree with his teaching methods at all. Normally teachers will reward you for going to class. Instead what he says is "on the exam" isn't! Very hard course over the summer. I stopped attending lecture and studied 2 week straight from 8 am to 8 pm and still didn't do well. There's much more help during the fall. Take it th
If you decide to take this class during the summer, just be ready to work. It's 6 weeks long, and if you want an A don't take any other classes. Make sure you go to the review session, and the best advice I can give is just know everything...read the book and know EVERYTHING... questions are very difficult. Be prepared to work hard for 6 weeks.
Smart guy. Hard class. He is sorta hard to understand. I suggest reading the book thoroughly and attending lectures/reviews for giveaway answers. I worked my ass off for 6 weeks, but I managed an A.
If you don't like to think this class is not for you lol. You have to know everything in the book 4 exams. Memorize details! Speak up, he likes talkative kids. Show effort. No 1 really gets an A, they're all curved, but to even get that curved A is VERY hard. Lots of work to be put into this class.
You will learn A LOT in this course. Exams are somewhat difficult(not only because of the content-prof makes up his questions and he leaves a lot of room for ambiguity) but the curve is HUMONGOUS and the final grading is very generous. Advis makes you think. You will learn how to study on your own which is very imp if you want to pursue higher stud
I took this over the summer much easier than the regular semester because there is so much to remember. remembering 6 weeks back is better than 3 months all the exams are ****ulative. He is a great, super nice guy but u have to really work. Go to all lectures, read the book carefully. Tricky exams but huge curve (17pts). Stay for office hours!
This course was by no means an "easy A" class that others have previously claimed. It was certainly one of the most intriguing and exciting courses, but among the most difficult that are offered at the university. I learned HOW to study- the professor is helpful especially in office hours. This is a must-take course before you graduate!
The curve is generous- this semester, it wasn't 17 pts-- it was actually 13 pts.
Very difficult class, but you'll learn a ton. I took Systems Physiology the same semester, and a lot of the material overlapped, which made it easier to remember for both classes.
i don't recommend taking him....he stutter through the whole lecture...not very clear..exams are pretty hard
First of all, Systems Phys is a very tough course. Advis is the guy to take systems with. He correlates his lectures with the book and he's a very nice person, especially compared to the other Systems teachers. Take him and stay AWAY from Systems in the spring semester!
prof. advis is great. Endo was not hard. All you have to do is LEARN the basics if each topic. His exams are hard but take his advice when he says "when the answer choice is wrong... its VERY wrong." Also, bring a recorder especially during the review sessions when he goes over every question on exam.
He is such a great professor! I had him over the summer for systems, and I loved the class. It's systems...so the class is supposed to be hard. However, he really goes out of his way to help you and make sure you do good. Just go over your notes when you read from the book, and MAKE SURE YOU ATTEND THE REVIEW SESSIONS!
Had him for both System Physiology (summer) and Endocrinology (fall). Can be hard to hear at times, so sit in front/use a recorder.Book for Endo is bad, book for systems is great, both can be avoided if you pay attention in class and take great notes.Exams are tough, he is extremely helpful though.Understand the material WELL=A.10-15 point curve.
Nice professor, knows a lot, willing to help. With accent, it is hard to understand, try to sit in the front. Definitely read the book, his exam has a lot of info. a lot of the exam questions are from the book. I feel this class is the only class i actually learn stuffs in rutgers so far. If you cannot self study, i dont recommend this class...
this class is the worst class i've taken in rutgers. advis is the worst teacher at the university. covers ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in lecture. i read the book, cover to cover and studied for weeks. class average is below a 50 yet the curve is "tentatively" 20 points. extra credit HURTS those who don't do it, which doesn't make any sense. huge ego.
Exams were hard but curves are great! Mid 70s = A. He gives you the "early Christmas gift" option which means he'll grant you the grade you want as long as you meet the terms of the conditions you submit to him i.e., please give me an A if I get a 72 on the final. However, you should be good at self-study else this class is not for you!
this class is hard. you NEED to have the time to devout to studying. you NEED to listen to him when he tells you how to study. you don't need to go to class, but the book is essential for being able to pass, let alone get a good grade. he is very willing to help though, and the TA reviews are key.
Student comments on this teacher can be found at his website: rci.rutgers.edu/~advis. As you can see, his course is very difficult, which is no surprise. Unfortunately, his accent is an extreme obstacle, and his lecture is circuitous. All in all very difficult to understand. USE YOUR TAs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just want to point out that I got A's with the professor in both System Physiology and Endocrinology and I studied exclusively from his notes in both classes, so take previous ratings that mention needing the book with a grain of salt.
Don't take systems phys unless you absolutely have to. The content itself is not difficult but the professor not using a microphone combined with a bad accent makes for a disasterous combination. He puts things on the exam that were never mentioned in lecture. The book is good thankfully but don't rely on his unorganized lecture notes. Stay away!!
def disagreed w/ below, he's def better than the other phys teachers. And his accent isn't too bad; MUCH MUCH better than Golfetti's accent who also teaches phys. If you have to take phys, def take it over the summer cause its more interesting than during the year & you'll actually learn something in class.
I didnt understand what he said most of the time and he made his exams really hard, but still i love this man. really helpful after class, gives you the a topics of all the questions on his exam and will force you to understand the material by explaining why it is correct. still his class is hard, so read the book and ask for help
I got a D the first time & retook it for an A. but point is - I am TRULY thankful to Dr.Advis's teaching method. I have been working on MCAT bio & find that this class is helping me a TON. Digestive system, Renal system, Endocrine system. This class covers 70% of MCAT bio! TAKE IT but not with other hard classes. You'll be thankful. You'll "LEARN"
Endocrinology is a class you must take. Dr. Advis's way of teaching lets you think and connect info like no other. You will be truly thankful, despite the hard work you put in. It is all worth it in the end. Go to his office hours for help, and don't procrastinate. The best class I ever took at Rutgers. 12 to 15 pt curve depending on # of smart ppl
Professor Advis is not an easy teacher, but you will learn a lot. His test are incredibly hard and you must know everything to do well. The book was very helpful and the slides helped a little. If have a 75 average you get an A. I highly recc. taking this last because all your other sciences will help you. Be prepared to work hard.
You will learn so much in this course, and Dr. Advis helps you think of the big picture, and then the details. The textbooks were a great help, especially as refreshers of physiology and as sources of info for the weekly essays. Dr. Advis' way of teaching is simply the best at Rutgers and he makes you THINK and encourages you to learn, not memorize
This class is by far one of my favorite courses taken at Rutgers. Professor Advis is an extremely intelligent man that forces you to think and not simply memorize concepts and definitions as you would in other science courses. This is NOT a class to take if you want an "easy A" but if you have an interest in this course & are willing to work. DO IT
Ok. I know what you are thinking, he has a low easiness rating so it scares you. Don't let it! It is the MOST rewarding class to take at RU, period. You will work hard, you will stress out, but once you are done you will feel like a million bucks. Once you know how to study for his exams, it is not bad.
The ultimate professor. Challenging course. If you put in the time and effort, you will get an A. I went to office hours, I reviewed my exams, did the recitation and read the book/lecture slides. After the first exam, you will realize his testing style and will realize how easy this class is!!
The most positive and understanding professor you will have ever come across. For every glass I see as half empty, he sees it as half full. I have taken two courses with him before; Physiology & Endocrinology. There is just too much to say. He's taught me so much to prepare me for medical school. I cannot thank him enough.
He teaches the basic concepts and all details are in the book. But you never know what whats going to be on the exam. Questions are poorly worded-making them difficult to understand. So even if you understand the material- you will still not do really well on the exam.
The class is hard, you have to read and understand, not memorize. Very time consuming but doable. In my opinion, summer session is easier, read the book in advance ch 1 - 26. Make your own study guides. Know hormones from where to what and function. Know all pathways stimulus to neg feedback. Exams are hard, its hit or miss. Final curve = ~15%.
Dont take it, he doesnt teach you what you need to know, he'll give you basic concepts and zip through them in class and then youre expected to learn everything on your own.You can never tell what hes gonna ask on an exam and you can study for days and still not do well. The level of detail he expects you to know is ridiculous for a college class.
Very difficult class and he is so hard to understand (low talker with accent) will only really help you if you go to office hours. Basically have to teach yourself because he is super vague and all the tests are very very detailed. Probably won't take another course with him.
There is a 1:1 correlation between what you put into this class and what you get out of it. Simple as that.
Fantastic class. You take Endo with Advis and you'll learn a lot. All you have to do to get an A is go to office hours. Literally. (That's what makes this course so difficult-we're too lazy to go to office hours)
he's impossible to understand and even less helpful when you're answering his terrible recitation questions
Advis' classes are probably some of the best prep courses available for professional schools (med, vet, grad) and the MCAT. Take his classes if you are a serious student, are OK with passing up multiple nights out with friends in order to study, and you are dedicated to really learning the material. Heavy textbook emphasis in most of his courses.
Advis' main goal for this class is to teach you how to properly study. He will explain how to study during every lecture so understand his technique! Chapters 1-5 are required BEFORE the first class. To pass, WRITE, use the voluntary recitations before/after class, TA reviews, lecture recordings. Use the book to read about the main lecture topics.
I will not suggest to take him
do not take this professor. drop the class as soon as you can. he only teaches animal repro in the spring, so try to take it in the spring. If he is the only professor, then i am very sorry for you.
Do not take animal reproduction with this man. He is terrible. His accent is difficult to understand and his only teaching method is to force you to teach yourself. At his office hours he is rude, unhelpful, and disgustingly condescending. If you don't phrase his recitation questions exactly the way he would, they are wrong. You were warned.
Do not take this class with him. He only teaches in the spring so take it in the fall. He is incredibly unhelpful in his office hours and his recitation questions are impossible to answer. Exams are relatively easy as long as you study directly from the book. He is disgusting and I refuse to attend class anymore.
If you are looking for an easy A, don't waste your time or his. If you're serious about pursuing a graduate degree (MD, DO, PhD, etc.), go to office hours and ADOPT HIS STYLE OF LEARNING! Why? As a med student, I can testify that his methods work. You'll thank him when studying for the MCAT and during Y1 when you're ahead of your classmates.
Worst class I've ever taken. So rude if you try and ask any questions in class or in office hours. Refuses to help you and looks at you like you're crazy for not understanding. The class average was a 46. Only 1 person got an A, and 3 got a B. Don't take this class. Do not take this class. Don't do it. Please I beg you. Don't.
If you are a serious student and are trying to get into Med Vet Dental PA school and happen to take his class, know that he will give a studying style that will make studying easier for you! I studied hard for the first and second exam. Once I saw how he processed information, I just read the text for the third and fourth exams. Got a 95 (A).
Ok so if you want to endocrinology w him, take physio before. It'll make it easier to understand the info seeing some it before. This class is one of the hardest bio electives i've take. To get an A you need to do constant studying to keep up. Don't hope for more than a B , if you start studying a week before the tests.
Hated taking this class w Advis. Take it w Bello if you can. His exams are very concept based as his big thing is active learning & not memorization. Averages 45-55. Does curve. The worst are the recitations. Average 35 and counts as an exam. They are tedious and not helpful. If you go to office hrs weekly& he knows you, you will do far better.
You have to study hard to do well. Material-wise it's probably one of the most important classes I will take in UG. He has admitted that he purposely mumbles during exam reviews so you don't hear everything and that he makes himself less available at the end of the semester before the last exam and recitations are due. Take with someone else!
I love this guy, planning to take Systems and Patho with him. Not an easy A, you have to work really hard, but you learn so much. Definitely learned more in this class than any other upper level I've taken so far. Sit up front. DO YOUR RECITATIONS ASAP! I would have gotten an A in the class but I procrastinated and suffered for it. They'll help you
Understanding his soft-spoken voice is harder than the class.... and the class is very hard. You have to write very serious recitation questions that takes hours of research to answer and the answers won't be in the textbook or powerpoint slides.
best professor at Rutgers. If you care about his class, he cares about you. office hours SAVE you. sit close to the front, engage in the lecture and do recitations ASAP because he gives amazingly helpful feedback. challenged me and pushed me to actually learn not memorize. grad school style of teaching. so grateful to have learned from him.
I'm really good at science so I got an A on all three of his exams with minimal effort. But I didn't get an A in the class because of the recitation questions. If you take GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS and he'll give you answers to the recitations otherwise you'll fail them. Other than that it's a moderately hard class, completely doable.
The worst. His accent is terrible so record the lectures. His exams are designed to punish those who try to memorize anything. You will be teaching yourself so buy the book, because only parts of his lectures show up on the exams. Know all processes and understand beyond what he shows you in class. Curve 16%. I'd highly recommend another professor
so my first class, he gave me attitude for asking a simple question about the schedule. the second class, he was RUDE and nasty to the autistic girl in the class. I understand she was asking trivial questions she should have know from biology, but it was so unnecessary and uncalled for. I dropped him mid class and never looked back.
I was sitting in the second row so I was fairly close to him yet I could not understand anything he was saying. He has a very strong accent and it's difficult to understand. He also lectures in a very boring way I was nearly falling asleep right in front of him. Left the lecture early and dropped the class.
I took Dr. Advis's Systems class in the summer. Buying and reading the textbook is essential to passing the course. I did not study from his PP slides at all. Reading the textbook and understanding the concepts are more important. Even though the class was very tough, I feel Dr. Advis is the best professor to take Systems Physiology with.
Amazing professor! I highly recommend you take his class if you are pre-med. His main concern is to teach his students in a meaningful way aka no memorization. He will teach you how to study and push you to your limit. He is also a very kind man!
Integrative Phys was the hardest class I've ever taken, but I'm SO glad I took it! His lectures are very interesting and he gives "stupid stories" to help you remember concepts. THE RECITATIONS ARE A NIGHTMARE but if you keep up with it week to week and edit with him, you'll get a great grade. DON'T SKIP LECTURES!! Sit up front and ask questions!
Integrative Physiology was the hardest class I took up until now. Don't expect it to be easy, but you'll learn a lot. Dr. Advis teaches you how to study and expects the best you can give. He forces you to think and I thought that was really good. DO THE RECITATIONS EARLY, DON'T LET THEM ADD UP! It was pretty hard, but I actually enjoyed the class.
This class is an easy C+. Advis is a good professor, and he knows a lot! DO THE RECITATION HW THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER! HE IS A TOUGH GRADER ON THEM. DONT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST WEEK AND GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. Exams are multiple choice and he repeats some questions on the next exams.
I absolutely loved Prof Advis. I took the class over the summer and he really makes you work for your grade. If you work for it and put the time in, it WILL reflect on your exam. The way he structures the class makes you look at the bigger picture and makes everything so much easier to learn. He's also willing to stay after and answer questions!
Well, I'd say that the class is def a tough cookie BUT there is a curve. What I've realized is that for the summer classes there is an +10% on the overall grade and +20% for the regular class. TAKE the regular class if possible and go to office hours for rec questions. C+ is very doable for summer class and B is VERY doable for regular class
The class by far ha been one of the most difficult I've ever taken. However, getting to know Dr .Advis (and of course, his love for torch music) has made this class a bit more bearable. He genuinely cares about his students, but it's on you to read the book (and by read I mean ALOT of reading) and understand the material. Hit the ground running!!
Advis will push you the harder than any other professor you have ever had. First course that I have literally read the entire textbook in less than 5 weeks in the Summer session. You have to devote ALL of your time to succeed. Lectures aren't mandatory. If you understand ALL of the textbook, you will succeed in the class! Get ready for a challenge!
This class might be harder then orgo. the test questions will be the most unstraight foward questions you have ever seen and you must rely on putting things in perspective and understanding the basics of physiology all the way to the littlest detail. read the book like it is the bible, there really isn't anymore advice I can give but good luck!
Great professor, he makes you work for your grade but it's totally worth it. He gives you a chance to send in your recitation questions each week so use it because they really help with your exams and are worth 25% of your grade. From the first sight it seems like he just enjoys torturing his students, but in reality he is very helpful.
I think that due to his accent it is difficult for him to communicate the information. He is a very knowledgable man but what good use is it if he can't teach it in a way that students can understand. Since he knows the material well but cannot teach it it makes the exams 100x harder. Harder than orgo good luck and spend 5hrs or more a day studying
Proff. Advis is very knowledgable if his field, but as my personal opinion I would not recommend someone to take this class, or would ever take one of his classes again. Lecture notes are not very organized or very helpful either. As a student you rely on the book mainly. Some people might like his teaching styles, and methods, but I did not.
You'll either love or hate Prof. Advis. His teaching style really emphasizes to not memorize the material but understand it, but it's hard to apply it since it's information dense. The one thing that I liked about Advis is that a couple of days before an exam, he literally has the exam in front of him and tells us the subtopics for every question.
There is nothing nice to say about this person. You can not understand him because he purposely mumbles, but clearly communicates at the start of the semester that he does not get paid to teach us. He preaches about this concept of active learning but his methods have nothing to do with active learning
