Dr. Arroyo is from Puerto Rico; his accent is still fairly thick, he makes frequent grammatical mistakes, and speaks quickly, which made his lectures and (weekly) tests very frustrating at times. Although it's not too difficult to get an A, I highly HIGHLY recommend avoiding this professor. Nice guy, but extremely aggravating class. TAs were meh.
Dr. Arroyo is a great guy. He is from Puerto Rico, so yes his accent is still thick and he makes english errors. He does weekly tests instead of midterms. But he cares about his students and will help anyone he can as much as they need it. if you go to his office or the TAs then you will have no problem getting an A in the class. highly recommend!
If i could take this guy for every bio class i had, i would! He doesnt always explain things in great english, but he does just fine. If you attend class, and review his slides and go to the TA review each week, you dont need to read to text and you will ace the class. Seriously, i love this guy, take him if you can! You will learn bio with ease!!
great guy, terrible teacher. Has incredibly thick accent and speaks super fast. not really sure how he got hired at BYU. If you ask him a direct question he gets very defensive and usually cannot answer the question himself. Turns to his TAs for answers. His tests are written very poorly (both grammatically and academically). you won't learn much.
Awesome teacher, really cares for his students and is willing to help. Read before you go to class and you'll understand the material. Put in the work and he'll help out with the rest.
I think this course is easy, regardless of who you take it from. Professor Arroyo is extremely nice and always willing to help. However, he assumes you read the chapter thoroughly or at least already understand the concepts and lectures accordingly. Really the only reason to go is to find out what you will be tested on weekly.
Dr. Arroyo is a very knowledgeable teacher. He does know his stuff but sometimes it seems hard for him to express what he wants to say in English. He always makes sure that all questions have been answered before moving on and he really does care about his students. His tests aren't written very well and we didn't use the textbook much.
Super difficult to understand because of His accent. If you want to understand his lectures (which is the test) don't take him as a professor.
There was a ton of information from a lot of different areas and it sometimes feels more like a 4 credit class rather than a 2 credit one. Form a study group because the tests can get pretty hard. He pretty much goes off his slides for the tests.
I love BYU and have loved my professors so far, but this class has been terrible. Arroyo loves his students and wants to help, but is extremely confusing in lectures and doesn't actually help. He will say one thing than change it and say something contradictory. It's really frustrating.
So, Dr. Arroyo is a great man. He loves his students and as a lot of passion. However, this class has been the most frustrating class I have taken at BYU, really. its a 2 credit class and he makes you jump through hoops on the test writing long application questions that seem to want to confuse you. Take this class from a different teacher, period.
Great professor. He really cares about his students, and wants you to get an A. He posts review slides online, as well as posting the daily slides. Going to class isn't mandatory, but it helps. Tests are not too difficult, and they are rather straightforward. He does have a puerto rican accent, but I find it rather easy to understand.
I would have rated it as being easier but his accent is BAD. I read the reviews on here and thought I could handle it, trust me, just take the class from someone else. Not only does he speak with a heavy accent but his powerpoints slides and tests were riddled with grammar and spelling errors and were just overall poorly made.
Science is my favorite subject, it is my thing. While the PD Bio 120 class from Professor Arroyo can be demanding and fast pace, he really wants you to succeed. He tries to make the class as easy and clear as possible but he does have an accent, If you have a hard time understanding accents I would not take from Professor Arroyo.
A strong accent and a lot of grammatical mistakes make his poor teaching and already lengthy and confusing test questions even worse. Contradicts himself, gets defensive when asked to clarify, and gets annoyed if you don't understand him. Makes 2 credit class feel like 4 credit class. Avoid this professor if you want to learn biology.
He is a very good teacher. Some of these other reviews are clearly by frustrated students. His accent is different, I wouldn't even describe it as difficult to understand. His presentations are NOT riddled by grammatical errors. He very much wants you to succeed. He has 5 grading methods, and he applies whichever would give you the best grade.
Great guy. His english is a little shaky, but he's not impossible to understand. Go to his office hours. He will likely give points back on tests and homeworks if you are polite and can argue your point well. He LOVES his students. Sometimes the test questions are confusing, but not enough to drop you a letter grade or anything. GREAT guy.
Great class. He has an accent that can be tough to understand sometimes, but he really wants to help. He sets you up to get an A with multiple grading procedures. If you work with him and the TA's, it's an easy A. If you don't show up to class, you won't pass.
Dr. Arroyo's intentions are great, and I have no doubt in his testimony of the gospel. However, seeing as English was not his native language, he is a bit hard to understand. There were problems with grammar on the homework as well as on the midterms, making it hard to understand the question that he was asking.
Pay attention to what's on the slide and you'll make it. Tests are fine, final's a beast! He tends to talk really fast making it hard to take notes but reviews a ton so you learn! You do need to put in the effort; not an easy A.
Juan is typically a really nice guy who will definitely be friendly and probably be helpful if you approach him after class or during office hours, but during class, he can be really confusing, contradictory, and a bit impatient with questions (albeit in a friendly way). Tests are hit and miss, and lots of his questions are really convoluted.
Doing well on his tests is difficult. Half the test is trying to figure out what is being asked. He is extremely helpful, kind, and approachable. I enjoyed his teaching method which is information overload at the beginning of a chapter and then a lot of time reviewing the material so by the time the test comes you should understand most of it.
I always felt lost in his lectures because he would zoom through the slides without explaining anything in great depth... He has a strong accent which doesn't help understand what he is saying. The tests are paragraph questions and are worded funny; its hard to understand. More than knowing information for the tests, you need know how things work
Dr. Arroyo is a wonderful professor. His tests are tough, but he gives you tons of extra help and lets the TA's see the tests before their test reviews. He uses a repetition teaching method which seems tough at first because it is fast, but don't freak out. He is really one of the best teachers here at BYU. Use your spanish with him. Go to class.
He's an interesting teacher, but very hard to understand because of his thick accent. Can't live without the textbook, because his lectures are very fast paced. Tests are super duper hard, but he reviews them after and has great TAs. Just make sure you learn the material through and through.
Good teacher. Every time I went to his office hours to talk about a test, I got points back so GO TALK TO HIM. If you make the effort he is very willing to help and wants to make sure you understand. You only need the textbook for the online quizzes due before class, but everything from the test comes from the powerpoints, which he posts online.
You won't regret taking this class from Dr. Arroyo! All his slides are posted online, and his lectures are verbatim repeats of the slides. He is the NICEST man ever, and he loves his students. TA's see the exams beforehand, so their reviews are a GREAT resource. Short, weekly homework assignment and online quiz open book plus a few exams. RECOMMEND
He has a heart of gold. He wants his students to succeed and is willing to meet as frequently as you desire. His lectures are fast paced and i didn't understanding what he was trying to say due to his accent. Go to TA reviews and recitation! TA's were wonderful. Unfortunately this does't lower the stress of the class. Wouldn't take class again. :
I took this class during the summer so it was pretty fast but it was still easy. If you get an A on the final you get an A in the class. It was really an easy class. Just study his slides and you'll do well on the tests. Also, go to him during his office hours and he'll most likely give you some points back on a test.
He is so hard to understand. He has a very thick accent and spoke fast.
I LOVED this class. We had class twice a week, and the first class period was a lecture from Dr. Arroyo. The second class was us presenting on topics involving reproduction that interested us. I felt a lot of peace coming to class, and Dr. Arroyo was very good at presenting potentially sensitive topics with great care and love.
Dr. Arroyo is such a nice guy but his lectures are extremely confusing. He has a very thick accent that makes it tough to understand, and the material is hard by itself. He posts the slides online which helps a ton, and he gives the TA's the test to help you prepare which is great. It takes awhile to get used to his accent and can be frustrating
Nice guy. He'll go to any length to help you, and he gives you 4 options for grading in the class (different balances of homework and tests), so it's easy to get an A. His accent does make it hard to understand him sometimes, but I really liked that he posted all of his lectures online. I would take another class from him anytime.
Terrible. Probably my least favorite professor I have ever had. His questions don't make any sense, and he goes through his slides way too fast. Do not ever take a class from him
He is not a bad teacher. Most of these reviews are written by freshman who are used to having A's spoonfed to them. This is college. Do your work. Learning doesn't end during lecture. 90% of it happens on your own, reading the book and reviewing concepts. I'd recommend taking PD Bio 120 from him.
Would NOT recommend Prof Arroyo to anyone. Half the time me and my classmates just make jokes about how impossibly fast he moves through his slides, and his accent only makes him harder to understand. With the amount of mistakes he makes doing examples, I sometimes question if he actually knows the material and how to do it. Great guy, poor prof.
He has a thick accent that is very difficult to understand, and prefers to explain things multiple times quickly rather than once in a clear and concise manner. This causes his lectures to be very stressful, as note taking is difficult. He's willing to work with you outside of class though, which is a good thing.
Dr Arroyo has a heart of gold. That being said, his class can be tough and confusing. He is a non-native English speaker with an extremely thick accent and often stumbles over words. His slides are disorganized. His second exam is tough. He is very fair, though. If you don't have bio background, do not take this class yet (from any professor).
Arroyo is a really nice guy and I learned a lot. He moves really fast in lectures and has a thick accent which was hard for taking notes, but he posts all of the Powerpoints online. Lots of homework, but it is easy. Tests are really straightforward. He wants you to know the material and works with all of his students to help them succeed!
Arroyo is the nicest guy ever, but a terrible professor. All the tests are worded with poor English on top of being intentionally tricky. He goes through lectures way too fast and you can hardly understand him. Arroyo never knew the answers to good student questions. He would simply answer with "I don't know" more than 5 times a lecture.
seriously easiest class ive ever taken. all semester you just write 1 long paper which is most of your grade, most do well on this. other than that you just listen to lectures that you dont take notes on b/c theres no tests. once a week you write your feelings on a primary article of your choice. all must take this class to lighten your load
He really is a great guy. I felt like the lectures were very fast paced and it was hard to understand him sometimes. His TAs are great though. It's super important to ALWAYS review the slides from the lectures and go over anything that you may not understand well with the TAs. But Dr. Arroyo is always willing to help, he wants you to do your best.
He's a nice guy and wants you to succeed but is not a great teacher. It seems like he doesn't even know what he's talking about half the time. Sorry, but his english isn't the best either and it's hard to understand what he's saying. There are also sooo many mistakes on his tests and he asks ridiculous questions sometimes. Not the best option.
Hes a super chill and easy teacher. He really cares about kids passing his class. Really is involved with our tutors offered at chico, so if you struggle definitely go to tutoring or SI. Overall one of my fav teachers so far.
Arroyo is a great human and loves his students, but he can't teach. The course itself is already hard, but he makes it ten times more confusing than it should be. Be prepared to TEACH YOURSELF and take meaningless quizzes. Attendance is mandatory but lectures are fast, practically in Spanish, and have no merit to them. Find a different professor.
Great, easy class. Most everyone are seniors and all you do is go to lecture, read a paper (or an abstract) and write a half page on it for the next class, present that (1 minute) every other week, write one paper and present that (5 min). Just do the work and you'll get an A. And interesting stuff!
Great guy, but goes through the slides at an incredible pace. He does post all the slides online which is great, but be prepared to use them. You basically have to teach yourself the material. The review sessions are also helpful, but you won't learn much from Dr. Arroyo because of the pace of the class and trouble understanding sometimes.
He cares about your success! However his lectures were confusing. Frankly, everything in his class I learned in high school, but there are times where his explanations just weren't clear and ended up confusing everyone. On the bright side, his TA's are awesome and super duper helpful for exams, be sure to see them for test reviews!
I LOVE THIS CLASS!!! The lectures went at a good pace but the professor is extremely engaging. There are reading quizzes and weekly homework that arent too hard and the tests arent too bad. He emphasizes students knowing how to apply information rather than just regurgitate definitions which I really like.
Professor Arroyo is one of the best PDBio120 professors. The classwork is very reasonable and tests are straightforward. If you're considering studying life sciences/medicine, this class will give you a great foundation. Dr. Arroyo is very approachable and easy to work with. He obviously wants all of his students to succeed.
I really like Professor Arroyo, you can tell he really cares for his students. However, if you aren't naturally good at science or didn't take AP Bio in high school (like me), you might find this class very hard. It was difficult to understand his accent at times and he goes fast! Study the Powerpoints outside of class and use the TAs!
Dr. Arroyo had great TA's and practice problems for this class. The material was sometimes difficult to understand and the class is fast paced. All the slides are on Learning Suite, review those like crazy. Arroyo is caring and genuinely wants you to learn. Some of the test questions were worded weird but go to the TA's, they saved my life.
Professor Arroyo is amazing! I am not sure why there were so many people that gave him such low scores! He takes time to go over difficult concepts and truly cares about his students and if they understand. He is accessible and has a great TA. Study, attend and you will be fine! He has a Spanish accent, but I understood him without any trouble.
Professor Arroyo cares a lot about his students. He teaches what is on the test and wants his students to succeed. His class is super interesting, he has a real passion for Biology, and he's always willing to slow down and answer questions when needed.
The nicest guy ever and so hilarious. Prepares you well for the tests and offers lots of opportunities to do well. My only complaint is that his tests were confusing and often written with poor grammar. His lectures are also VERY fast paced so utilize the TAs. Good professor but should not be writing tests.
Nice professor, always willing to help outside of class. Class pace is really fast though, probably 70 slides a day. More info than you need for the tests in lectures, go to TA reviews and the class isn't bad at all.
Arroyo is very funny and sweet but I don't think he is the best teacher. He has a significant accent and talks fast so it is sometimes difficult to understand him. As for the class itself, make sure to do the readings (they are minimal) and really study for the reading quizzes. Review every exam with the TA's. They are so helpful!
Dr. Arroyo is one of the most caring professors that I've had. His is willing to work with you individually to help you succeed. As far as the class, the concepts aren't hard to understand and you could just review the slides at home since they cover all the material, but you still need to work hard since tests are tricky. Make a friend or two!!!!!
This Professor is great!! He is very clear about what is going to be on the test, plus the TAs get to see the exam before hand so GO TO THE REVEIWS!! He has a bit of an accent, which made it difficult for me to understand as first, but you can always look over the slides again or go to the TAs afterwards for clarification. Definitely recommend
Arroyo is honestly the GREATEST! He is truly one of the most caring people on planet earth. Yes he does talk fast and has a little bit of an accent but he posts all his slides on Learning Suite. The TA's are able to see the test so GO TO THE REVIEWS. His tests are worded a little tricky but as long as you understand the concepts you should be good.
I LOVE DR ARROYO. All the people here bashing him are mainly concerned with his accent, not his knowledge or teaching style. Despite having a different primary language than English, the man is HILARIOUS, teaches well, and has a great class set-up. You'll fall in love with the man if you give it some time and try in his class I promise.
He know his stuff, teaches it well, and provides every opportunity for you to get the grade you want. I got my first %100 on a midterm of his, so his class is very doable.
Dr. Arroyo wants everyone to get an A and uses four different grade systems to give you the highest grade possible. If you go to the TA reviews, they will tell you exactly what is on the test. Attendance is mandatory, but the lectures are interesting so it's not bad. Dr. Arroyo is super caring and the best PDBIO 120 professor!
Prof. Arroyo is pretty great, and very willing to give As. He has multiple grading strategies (with differently weighted categories) and will give you the highest score possible. Funny guy, attendance is mandatory. Totally willing to let you reopen assignments if you forget them and are being otherwise consistent in the class.
Great guy, but OH MY GOSH he goes through the slides waaaaaaay too fast and does NOT go into depth of certain subjects so it doesn't make any sense. great guy, not a great teacher. It's hard online cause i can't stop him and ask questions cause its all recorded. He really needs to SLOW DOWN and be sure to GO IN DEPTH to what he teaches.
One of the worst professors I've had in college so far. It is REALLY hard to understand him and he teaches so fast. His exams don't make too much sense and he will lie to you and say something will be very basic and straight forward on the test but it's not and its 10x harder than he makes it out to be. No practice problems either, just HW.
Professor Arroyo is a good enough guy but he is a terrible teacher who isn't able to present the necessary information in an understandable manner. His tests are pretty hard which is made worse by the fact that you nor his TAs know what is going to be on the test. Is accent is pretty thick as well.
NOT the teacher to take this class from while online! He prerecorded the lectures that he just read off of way too quickly. Each one took 4 times as long as the video was because I had to pause to write the info down every two seconds. 95% gets you an A, and 92% gets an A-. Tip: print out the slides and write on them. Don't need textbook.
Dr. Arroyo is a nice guy, but I would not take another class from him. At least not during COVID. His pre-recorded lectures went way too fast and I felt behind the whole time. The only reason I got good grades was because of the TAs. Tests were hard and I felt unprepared most of the time.
Professor Arroyo seems like a nice guy but his course this semester was horrible. His recorded lectures were super fast, and hard to understand. The course was very unorganized, with the homework sometimes being due before we even learn the material. I learned 95% percent of the material from my amazing TA's. Live instruction would've been better.
TERRIBLE professor. just reads off his slides and makes the exams extremely hard for how he teaches. all he does is read and says what he wants you to remember. has no business around teaching.
DONT BUY TEXTBOOK AT ALL. Not needed His lectures take 4x longer than they should because he doesnt give time to write things down in the recording. You have to pause constantly. He often re-records some sections in lecture where he messed up but forgets to cut out the ones he doesnt use so you watch the same thing three times. Kinda funny lol
Dr. Arroyo would be better in person and not online. But he's very willing to talk through things in his office hours if you don't understand. He cares a lot about his students. He talks fast in the lectures, but again if you don't catch it you can go to office hours. Plus TAs review everything weekly. The TA's could see the test before hand too!
Professor Arroyo is definitely a great professor. Because of his accent, his lectures can be a little harder to understand (just don't play them x2 speed). He definitely cares a lot about his students and is willing to do whatever he can to help them get an A (he will change the weight of assignments to higher your grade). Definitely recommend.
I was surprised to see many people gave Dr Arroyo bad reviews. Hes a great professor. He does go through the lectures fast but I never had a problem with that. He spend an entire week reviewing for a midterm. Ive never had a profesor that did that. He really cares that you understand the material. The tests arent too hard. Guaranteed A!
Dr. Arroyo is a great professor, his tests are not hard and everything you need to know is in his slides. He is also super funny and his lectures are interesting and he truly cares about his students
Dr. Arroyo is awesome. He knows his stuff, and he is very personable. He will never ever fail to help a student in need. Lots of people say he lectures fast, which I won't deny, but I didn't have too much trouble keeping up. Plety of ways to get help from him and his TA's. I would take a class from him again.
DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK. Biggest waste of $100 I've ever spent. There's a super easy homework assignment once a week, and EVERYTHING IS IN HIS SLIDES. Like I'd do about an hour a week and pretty much commit the slides to memory, and then get high 90's on his tests. And that's it. Seriously, a piece of cake.
This class was unnecessarily hard. I never missed class, took notes, paid attention, and went to every review and still was having such a hard time. The TA's weren't that helpful and every question asked in class was only half answered. The test's were nothing like the reviews and had a lot of "most likely correct" answers which made them so hard.
Professor Arroyo is a really great guy. He really cares about his students doing well. However, his class is hard. He moves VERY quickly through lecture slides and has an accent so sometimes it makes it hard to understand him. Prepare to learn a lot of it on your own. Also, the tests are unnecessarily hard. ALL COMPREHENSIVE.
Dr. Arroyo is a great professor! Definitely had to put in work outside of class and go to the TA's to understand the material. I felt like I didn't fully understand it until right before the test but then it clicked. He goes a bit fast but will slow down if you ask. He does great reviews for the tests. Barely any homework.
Professor Arroyo really is difficult to understand and he moves fairly fast, but he doesn't cover that much content each lecture. If you can't understand him, then just read the textbook (readings aren't necessary if you attend lecture). He cares a lot about his students & the exams are very easy w/ surface level questions. No surprises.
Dr. Arroyo cares so much about all of his students. Cell 120 by nature requires you to understand many topics and Dr.Arroyo was able to cover most things in class. He and the TA's will be happy to help you at any time. He also makes the lectures easy to digest and is a pretty funny guy. Class is easy but I wish I would have stayed on top of my work
Dr. Arroyo makes great slides and has great TAs, but I found his lectures very difficult to understand. I went to office hours a lot and reviewed the slides after class over and over again in order to memorize the cell processes. If you're just looking for a life science credit, beware of this class. An A is def doable but takes a lot of work.
I thought he was a very caring professor who genuinely wanted his students to succeed. He bases all his test questions off his lectures, so make sure you go to class. The TAs were incredible.
Dr. Arroyo was a very kind professor, everything is available online, and you will need to review the slides after each class as he goes pretty quickly. The homework is easy if you do the reading. The tests were the hardest part and what hurt me the most grade-wise. His tests include diagnosing questions that can be tricky. Otherwise, very good.
Dr Arroyo wants his students to succeed. He is funny, kind, and spiritual (every class began with a prayer and spiritual thought). TA reviews were built into class time. You will enjoy the course and do well if you keep up with the readings and pay attention in class lectures.
I found the class disorganized and the lectures confusing. For most of the semester I managed to learn the material fine, so this would be excusable if not for the poor quality of the tests. The final exam was perhaps the worst I have ever taken; there were repeat questions, spelling/grammar errors, and vague wording. It was an ordeal.
His English is not great, which was a struggle during the whole semester. He never mentions the homework in class so it feels irrelevant. The test questions are worded poorly and I felt like I was always trying to guess what he meant to say. It felt like the questions were sometimes trying to trick you instead of testing for understanding.
I loved arroyo but there are some downsides you need to know. First of all, the tests have a lot of errors. sometimes he will even leave in the answers on a couple questions. Other times there will be grammer errors that make the question confusing. Also, he does grading weird so you don't know what your grade is until the end. He is nice though.
Dr. Arroyo was brilliant and extremely kind. However, the threshold to get an A in the class was 96% which frustrated a lot of us. His tests could also use a quick review from the TAs or something because a lot of the time the questions were worded very poorly or straight-up gave you the answer. The study guides were useful and TAs were flexible.
Dr. Arroyo is a super caring and fun professor. He really wants his students to succeed, and he often reviews material in class to help this happen. The online homework was sometimes confusing and did not feel helpful in preparation for the exams, but otherwise, I really enjoyed this class.
Tests for this class were AWFUL. Repeated questions, grammar and spelling mistakes, and most questions are "choose the best answer". The grading is also heavily based on the tests. The TAs were also not helpful and often made things more confusing. Dr Arroyo is a great guy and is super nice but this class should not be taken as a general!
Dr. Arroyo is the best professor I have ever had. He cares so much about his students and he is an excellent teacher. He is hilarious and I loved his lectures. Easiest A of my life. He did leave the answers in for a few of the questions on the final, but the test was so easy that it didn't make a difference. Highly recommend.
Dr. Arroyo is always happy to answer questions in class. He's a genuinely nice person. BUT we were told at the beginning by the TAs that getting an A would be easy and achievable. Come the end of the semester and only 8 out of 122 people got an A in the class. Dr. Arroyo was impossible to get ahold of by email. Take Cell120 from a different teacher
Be aware that unless you are very adept at understanding through a thick accent you're going to basically be teaching yourself. He really isn't a bad professor but the tests were way more confusing and he will try to trick you on exams. The TAs are decent but not available enough to help and they didn't know their stuff as well as they should've.
Dr. Arroyo is a great guy just not a great teacher. I took AP BIO and still really struggled. Lectures are fast-paced and he does have an accent making him harder to understand. Not much time to take notes. He posts slides but they don't give you much. Exams are more intuitive/problem-solving and less content itself. Prepare for a challenge!
He is a really nice guy and really care about the students. His accent makes him a little hard to understand at times especially when he is going fast. The slides are the key to the tests, and if you just learn everything on the slides you will do well. He grades really easily and will pull different grading strategies to give you the best grade.
He was alright
Taking this class? Big mistake. His accent makes it extremely difficult to understand what he says, he moves at lightning speed, and he changes the schedule on you overnight without letting you know. The ONLY reason I'm surviving this class right now is because of a tutor I see twice a week. "You got that? K. Movin on".
Dr. Arroyo is fantastic. He clearly knows biology and is really passionate about it, and he cares so much about students and is accommodating and kind. Definitely one of the best people and one of the professors I've had at BYU. Lectures go really fast so be prepared, and organization is sometimes not perfect, but overall Dr Arroyo is amazing.
Dr. Arroyo cares so much about his students its amazing! He is so encouraging and will walk you through anything you don't understand. I met with him multiple times this semester and all he wants to do is make sure that you are doing well in and especially out of class. I love Dr. Arroyo, and would tell anyone to take him if they have the chance!
Dr. Arroyo is a super caring professor who cares about his students and their success. However, he has an incredibly thick Puerto Rican accent and tends not to be in lectures. The TAs in the class are often the ones teaching and available for questions. They also write the tests so they are a better resource for information rather than Dr. Arroyo.
Professor Arroyo is so kind and you can definitely feel the spirit in his class. He does want you to do well, but he can be kind of hard to understand and the class is very fast paced. study the lecture slides... you basically have to have them all memorized for the exams. Definitely got killed by the exams. if you're smart you'll be fine :)
Professor Arroyo is kind, but the class can be tricky. Tests have issues, like wording errors. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep. Overall, it's a doable course if you stay on top of it.
the worst professor i've had at byu, makes every topic harder than it is, horrible lecturer. the TA's have no idea what they are talking about. He doesn't come to class and has teh TA's teach. tests are horrible and I'm an actual biology TA.
Honestly the worst class I've taken at BYU. Accent makes it difficult to understand what he is saying and just speeds through. Tests are terribly worded and are way harder than any homework. Doesn't even come to class just has the TAs teach which is not helpful at all. I took chem 105 and physics 105 and this was the worst one out of all them.
He was a nice guy, but did not prepare you well for the exams and didn't show up to class at least a third of the time (his TAs would teach or give us worksheets instead). That being said, if could do it over, I would have just memorized all his lecture slides and I'm pretty sure I could have gotten an A.
Dr. Arroyo is such a nice person, he is hilarious, which makes his lectures enjoyable. But I think the tests are way too easy, too many people get high scores; and there are some occasional flaws in the questions.
Arroyo was not particularly good at explaining concepts but he was really understanding and always gave a lot of time for review. I probably would not take a class from him again but Cell 120 was pretty easy.
Here's the deal with Dr. Arroyo... if you are taking this class for a general and/ or not good at biology in general, consider taking another class or teacher. Dr. Arroyo cares about his students, but his in-class lectures will not help you with the tests. The only way to pass this class is to frequent the TA study labs as there are no study guides
Dr. Arroyo is a very caring professor! At first he can be a bit difficult to understand, but he will answer any questions you have and offers lots of worksheets and review/question days. Would definitely recommend attending TA office hours and exam reviews to prep for the tests. Lots of memorization, but a doable class
Dr Arroyo was bad at explaining concepts, he was all over the place, and the only way one could glean the proper information is when he wasn't in class (Which was far too often), and the TA's were leading review sessions like every other class. The unfortunate biproduct of this was he had to rush through content and explain poorly.
Dr. Arroyo is one of the most caring professors I have ever taken a class with. He knows the type of content that he teaches for an entry-level class like this and strives to simplify it as much as possible and he will go out of his way to help YOU be successful. Some freshmen kids mocked him in class, but that's just their racism showing off.
I really liked Arroyo as a person. He was funny and one of the nicest people ever. His lectures were pretty good, super fast, but they didn't prepare you for the tests very well. The tests were about the same topics that he taught, but way more in-depth. He didn't have good study guides or any good ways to prepare for them. Homeworks were easy.
I wanted to love this class but was by far my least favorite class I have taken. Dr Arroyo is very caring but is terrible at giving lectures. He will rush through the content faster than anyone can learn it then have an entire day just for review. A third of the time he didn't even show up to class and the TA's ran the review. Avoid if you can!
I would not take another class from Dr Arroyo. He is kind and caring, but his lectures are difficult to understand and his powerpoints are glitchy and confusing. His tests are super hard also. If it weren't for the TAs I would not have made it through this class. If you do take a course from him, I would advise building a relationship with the TAs.
In the least racist way possible, if you don't speak Spanish I would try to take from a different professor. Dr. Arroyo is a great teacher and really nice guy, but I genuinely had the hardest time understanding him and sometimes he would throw in random Spanish words in the lectures. Made it a lot harder to learn. But he really is a nice guy!
Dr arroyo is amazing and caring, however he isnt great with explaining, he feels kind of rushed. Tests are hard. Worst part in this class is the messy slides, very hard to understand and not organized, repetitive and vague writing and assumes you already know the information. I lost my mind trying to understand these slides.
I've never felt like I've known the material in a class more, yet received such a bummer grade. He in no way prepares you for his tests. They are way more difficult than anything covered in class. He rushes during lectures, and I had to teach myself most of the materials. Avoid unless you want to go into tests blind and teach yourself.
I actually really liked Professor Arroyo! He tended to rush through content because there's a lot of it, but he makes that up for giving practice days and review days for harder content. He's also willing to meet outside of class, good at responding to emails, and his TAs were amazing! Definitely recommend, but it is just a hard subject in general.
