Good teacher with good comments. Wants his students to do well. Highly recommend.

I recommend this class if you enjoy writing poetry, short stories, and plays. The class requires an innovative mind. This professor grades fairly considering it's a creative writing class. Over all, I'd say this class was kind of fun! Professor Buriel is also kind of funny.

Let interesting discussions about literature and encouraged creativity. In this class (intro to creative writing), he worked with students to help them create short stories, poetry, and one act plays. I do not consider myself to be a creative writer, but I turned out work I am really proud of! Highly recomend to others.

Really great teacher! You can tell he really respects his students and wants you to do well. I took him during summer school and was not looking forward to it, but he made the class interesting and I actually enjoyed going. The essays are long in length but are on subjects that are interesting. Overall, great class and teacher!

Juan talks ALOT. He's a little high on himself and really likes to hear himself talk, but he's nice and makes sure you understand the assignment at hand. If you have to miss a class, he works with you to make up any quizes (which, by the way are SUPER EASY). I was not looking forward to this course coming in 2 months ago, but now I finished w/an A!

Juan is a great professor!! He makes sure you understand every assignment. I would take him in the future!Make sure you have your books at all times. Make sure to answer his questions or he'll give you extra assignments! Over all a great professor

He seems like a great guy as a person but as a teacher he is a little boring. He is an incredibaly tough grader! So if your not the best essay writer don't take him. Before this class I had never written 5 page papers so I was a little nervous but believe it or not he makes it easier for you. He repeats himself A LOT.Thats probably why he's boring

Juan is a a great teacher. He makes sure you understand everything in class. He is open for questions during lecture and after class. He is cute and funny, although be aware that he is very analytical. Overall, he is great!! I recommend him.

He is a nice guy, and you can tell that he genuinely wants to help his students (which is refreshing). Class is really really boring though, I rarely went but I could still keep up. Most of your grade based on three essays.

I like Juan. I had him for English 091 last semester and 101 for this summer. Your grade is basically from essays. You have reading quizzes which aren't quizes at all but merely freewriting. He lectures a LOT so sometimes you space out...but he is fairly easy if you like to write. If you're a good writer and want an easier teacher than most, do it

Really great class. you learn a lot. Will challenge you to think, research, and apply what you learn. I am older, was terrified - but he is always willing to meet with you and help as much as he can. He is very very smart !

I took his 101 class after dropping out from another 101 class in spring. He lectures great and wants you to learn. He will answer any question you have and is very great in doing so. My essay writing skills improved a lot due to his help and commenting. Strongly recommend him as a instructor!!

Since he teaches at UC Irvine, his class is exactly like a UC class so if your not ready for that, don't take him. Loves to repeat himself. Goes over the sylabus 2 or 3 times. Talks ALOT. 3 essays, two 5 page and one 7 page essay. Good teacher though. I ask him to review my papers even though I'm not in his class anymore.

He's a pretty cool teacher, he does talk a lot, but is very helpful. Stays after class and answers any questions you may have. I would take him again...

Loved this class. Very structured, always know what to expect. Essays get easier once you know what he's looking for. His lectures really help with understanding. I'd definitely take his class again, and wish I was in it now.

Apart from all the negative comments on this professor I know that this class is difficult but then again we are college students and we shouldn't be reminded of that. I myself am glad of having a professor with such high standards, there aren't that many at this college. Any advice? Do quality work.

ok teacher. dosnt take attendence and students can affored to miss some of his classes. he talks ALOT. buckle up he goes on and on and on. but he is very clear about his schedule and when things are due. ok teacher tho

This teacher was extremely helpful and clear. I took him over summer and received an A. If you listen to his criticism on your essays and follow his instructions you will have no problem getting a good grade. He is a really nice teacher, does lecture most of the class though.

If you really want to learn ... this is the professor! He's interesting, intelligent, and makes the class go by really fast. If you do the assignments, and really try - you'll get a good grade. He's also always available to explain and help if you need. it. I took 2 classes with him - and I would definately take more!

Although DR. Buriel is not an easy teacher he does lay out all work that needs to be done. He is very helpul when ever you need hoim, hes available. If you want to truly learn i would good with him, if you want to get by then no. I would recommend him to all students who search for higher education :]

Great teacher. He was clear on what was expected and good at reminding everyone where they should be at with their essays. Good feedback and helpful when needed. He did a good job of assigning limited, but very helpful reading assignments instead of telling us to read the entire book like some teachers. Do the reading and listen, you will do well.

He's a great professor, his lectures can be very boring but he is extremely helpful. He makes himself available for help via email and by apt which is very convenient. He is tough on grades but is extremely helpful. If you are looking for a good professor that will help you improve your writing skills he is the right professor for you!

Although he is clear on what he wants for the essays, he requires them to be too much of what he is specifically looking for. That's why his lectures get boring. He does grade harsh and vividly. I'd suggest that if you're not a god in English, find another professor.

Cool teacher. Kind of boring in the lectures. No one really participated. Does help you through email. Grades kind of hard, but if you show everyday and pay attention to what he wants you'll pass.

He comes from teaching university English majors.For some of us"mediocres"in English subject,esPECially 101,it may seem very hard for us to pass with an A.I felt like I really tried hard for at LEAST a B,but ended up getting a final C,with a couple of Ds in certain assignments. Just do exactly what is asked to do, and you'll be fine.

Cool guy, very understanding and helpful when you screw up and forget to turn stuff in. Definitely not the most riveting class but what can you expect in english? Grades essays hard but trust me if you get some Bs/low As on essays you'll end up with an A in the class if you do the class quizzes (aka show up, they're mostly opinions and really easy)

I highly recommend this professor! He is very helpful, responds to emails rather quickly, and is always willing to help and answer questions. His grading can be a bit harsh, but the class isn't too hard. English isn't my strongest subject but I received an A in the class - I got A's on all the essays and reading quizzes. this professor explained things very well and showed he cared for his students. he responded to emails quickly and was always wiling to help. although, his class was very boring and was hard to stay focused. he was always very specific on the essays and was a hard grader. wouldn't recommend this class to someone who is barely entering into college

Clearly tells you what he wants, harsh grader, will make you a better at writing papers, e-mail him often it will help a lot.

Loveee Juan! Cool guy but talks a lottt in lectures. 4 essays and summary/journal short answer questions once a week. If you email him about your essays, he helps a lot which makes it easier for you to pass. Listen to what he says in class and use same info in essays then you're more likely to score higher.

As a student, if you get Mr. Buriel as a teacher, consider yourself lucky! This guy is one of the few professors out there who are crystal clear about assignments, homework, due dates, etc. No surprises, no random sh*t appearing on quizzes - it's all straightforward. Pay attention, ask questions, and don't fall asleep. Reliable, very kind person.

Juan is an outstanding instructor. He is also willing to go the extra mile to help any student be successful. The assignments are not complex, though he is a tough grader. The way he grades is very helpful, as he wants everyone to develop as writers at a college level. I definitely recommend taking him if the opportunity arises.

His lectures are long. His assignments are straight forward, just follow the prompts. He prepares you for future Eng courses. You can email him & get a helpful response. It was hard when not prepared, give yourself enough time and proof read. People who received a low grades did not try hard enough. I would take his class again without hesitation.

He is very approachable. If you follow direction well you will get a good grade. He encourages you to write and read critically. He really cares about his students and you can email him anytime for questions.

Straight forward assignments with clear guidelines as to what we need to do. Gives a lot of important information that is helpful when doing assignments. Easy to reach when have questions. Truly a great teacher.

amazing teacher. i always loved and enjoyed so much going to his class. the two books he assigned to us were so interesting if you are willing to read it and analyze. he helps his students really understand what he is talking about and to help us write a good essay. i would definitely take him again!

He is fantastic, answers all questions thoroughly and accurately. He is so understanding, and will do everything he can to work with your schedule- i.e. if you can't make a class, he will help you to make up missed assignments and truly wants to see all of his students succeed. One of my favorite professors yet!

Buriel was an excellent teacher! He genuinely wants all his students to pass and cares about them. There was only 3 essays and a final(which wasnt really even a final). Hes very clear on what he expects on essays and basically walks you through on how to write them. Hell meet with you on your time and always respons to emails quickly. Loved him!

He can be hard if you don't try but if you just don't procrastinate, you'll get a good grade.

Buriel is a very good English professor. His English 101 class is structured such that there is a high degree of freedom to write about topics that are interesting to oneself. He has high standards for the formal papers and gives good feedback on them. He also gives lots of short writing assignments that can boost a persons grade.

Professor Buriel was a great online teacher! I took English 101 through him as a high school student and his grading was fair, he was great at responding to emails, and very clear in communicating when everything is due. His class was challenging but not too difficult or work heavy. If you have the option to take his class, TAKE IT!

I have had Professor Buriel twice now, for English 101 and 112. I really enjoy how organized he is on Canvas and his consistent reminders. He is a very good professor for an online course so if you have him as an option, TAKE THE COURSE! He is very thorough when it comes to feedback on essays. To be honest, I think English 112 was easier than 101.

I have never once wanted to rate a professor but Mr. Burel is amazing ! He will message you back right away! Gives amazing feed back ! Grades nicely and is clear from the start what the class entails. Im dyslexic and was so worried about this class and I got an A ! TAKE HIM! STOP LOOKING TAKE HIM TRUST ME! Easy and interesting

Simple outline of class. 16 discussions 4 essays. Participation in discussions helps build essays. Straightforward and great feedback on essays given. I should have utilized him to strengthen my writing abilities but covid semesters have been lazy ones for me. Definitely recommend. Would take again.

Best English class experience ever! Professor Buriel is very down to earth and understanding. He's very clear with his expectations regarding the discussion boards and essays and wants to help you succeed. He provides additional notes and material to help you understand. As long as you turn in the work and give your best effort, you will pass!

Buriel is a wonderful and understanding teacher. He is very clear about what he wants from you, and provides many resources. Nearly the whole grade is based upon the essays, but he is willing to aid you with them so it really is not much of a problem if you do the work and reach out.

My class was completely online I never saw his face or heard his voice but he bumped me up to an A because I didn't have missing assignments. Just follow the very specific instructions and rewrite the samples he gives you for the papers and you'll pass.

Professor Buriel was Amazing! Essays take up 80% of your grade, 20% for discussions. If you follow the instructor's outline for the essays you should get an A for each one. I emailed him a lot to read my essays before I submitted mine, he was happy to read them and give back feedback. I highly recommend this professor!

Each assignment he gives you is 100 points, so it is crucial that you understand what is happening. His paper prompts are really interesting and relevant and he'll remind you of due dates and message you the day things are due. He's a clear grader and he helps a lot if you dont understand something! I really enjoyed his class.

Discussion post(200 words) and peer response(100 words) every week, however, they help a TON with each essay assignment. The reading from the textbook is always short, only 4 essays, and an easy final. Essays were sometimes difficult because they could get lengthy, but preparation and not procrastinating should help. He always seemed nice.

I took his course during covid so it was 100% online and still was one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. It's not a lot of reading. Discussion post weekly with peer responses very very VERY hard not to get a 100/100 for discussion posts. Essays are east and straight forward with outlines as well. He gives amazing feed back. TAKE HIM

Juan is a great professor!!!!! He is a tough grader but all you have are discussion boards and four papers. I am an A student (in literally every other class) but I have a low B. He is pretty quick and open to respond to emails. You do have to put in effort but if you can't do that, why are you going to college?

I respect this teacher a lot. He is very understanding and is there to help you in any way. He just wants to see you thrive and become a better student. I highly recommend.

Even if English isn't your strong suit, failing is virtually impossible under his guidance. Every assignment comes with a clear and illustrative example. In the past, I failed English twice due to other professors' unclear grading methods. However, under his instruction, I not only passed but excelled with an A grade.

He does give great feedback on essays and is always willing to help out if you seek his help, but paying attention in class is virtually impossible. There are writing assignments in class, that you have to do in class, so class is mandatory. He's also a talker, but overall, great guy, great professor!!

There isn't much to learn in English past high school, and he tried to make it seem like there was. Lectures were often long and redundant. English 101 had three easy essays, but they were pretty easy. The first one you must read a book for. He's an easy grader, but I would take his online class if I could go back in time.

His feedback is very detailed and helpful. Truly cares about his students and how they perform in his class. Sends out weekly reminders to turn in work, which was pretty standard and the same assignments over and over again (mostly Discussions). Very particular about he wants things written but as long as you follow the guide closely you will pass

This class was a breeze. It was very enjoyable. I always hated English classes, and I was nervous to have to take this one. This is the first English class I have ever had a pleasant experience in. What is expected for each essay is very clear. I will miss this class an I am very thankful for the positive experience.

Mr. Buriel is everything you would want in an English Professor. From Day 1 his syllabus is clear and concise, laying out all criteria and expectations. The material for his class is not something to dread but rather an enjoyable read. He has a wonderful manner that accompanies his plethora of experience. Put in the work and your grade will match!
