Extremely scary instructor. Talks about himself and past war experience 99% of the class. The man is living on the edge - seriously.

This is a professor that will make the diffrence in your way of thinking. Very intelligent, and unique teacher. Do journals and take some time on the research paper and you will get an A. NEVER FALL ASLEEP IN HIS CLASS.

I had no idea what I was doing in Film Viewing, I watched a movie and had no idea what to talk about in the response paper. Very weird teacher, He didn't even know how to work the VCR!!!

Seems like a hard prof. at first but he gets cool. Very easy to talk to and the class is alot of fun and he makes it very interesting.
quite opinionated, loves talking about himself, not the book and rarely relates things back to the book. he comes across as a good man, and easy to talk to, but be prepared to hear his life story. he is very liberal and anti-republican...be careful not to take this interpersonal communications class
awesome, wish all my teachers could be like him. But I guess if you're a boring neoconservative whi just wants to be a widget, and who just wants to graduate so you can move to Grandville and live in your little beige vinyl sided house, you might not like him.
It's not a teacher's job to voice their political opinions in class. Also, to the last person, Grandville is a wealthy suburb and the last time I checked wealth means a good education. So honestly, I don't get why you even bothered saying that like it's some kind of insult.

Professor Heredia is a very good professor. He is nice and very helpful. He knows alot about life. Very interesting. Don't miss a class. Must take notes. Weekly journals and chapter questions. Fairly easy class. Two major papers. One group and one on your own. Easy though. He is a must take class.
You'll either sink or swim with this dude. He's very unclear on what he wants done, his grading scale is completely whack, and you may as well throw the syllabus away when you get it. He can be funny at times...Take excellent notes and you'll do fine
This guy sucks as a teacher...He doesn't teach. My class is film criticism. He puts a movie in expects 2 pages of notes. Then assignes 1-2 more movies, again expecting 2 pages of notes. Yet, we have are given nothing to go on. He doesn't explain his expectations for the notes, so we're in the dark.
The absolute worst prof that I have ever had. He is very unclear and he thinks he is above all of the students. He is rude and should be fired.
Prof. Heredia offered absolutely no feedback throughout the semester, and only made light associations to ANY of the subject matter. Most of the class sessions involved him talking about his past as a model or gang member, and left me wondering why I'd left my warm bed. Politics aside, 2/10 tops.

The most intelligent, yet opinionated teacher I've had the pleasure of learning from. If you listened to him you will most likely find wisdom from his experience. Forget the whole political agenda hysteria. He's really quite impartial. If you PAY ATTENTION!
all you talk about is his life. he doesn't explain things very well and he likes to argue with you, but you are never right.
I retook the class for a five week summer course, to change my grade, the class was so fun and the professor was great. The paper is hard, but the project on 1984 was a blast!
Hey, he is a a DAMN good teacher, but this is west michigan, where we have more churches than trees. Its fun to see a couple of people get knocked of their high-horses by one of their own. He is religious, but i respect him anyways - his reasons are his own, not his peers or parents. He is unbiased. He is articulate, and i wouldn't dare debate him.
Retook the class for the summer and it rocked. Lots of good discussion, a battle of the sexes section, an awesome group project. The paper isnt that hard if you start it right away.

He is a excellent professor.I do not think he tries to be more superior then his students.I beieve he wants us to try and achieve our best. He is very open minded and will listen to one's opinions.If you come back with a good remark it will stop him in his tracks.Only wants the best out of his student.No test,just chapter work,and 2 paper finals

honestly, the best professor at GRCC. Doesn't teach about anything in the book, but teaches you a lot about life. Smartest man I've ever met. The final project is tough, but taking the class was worth it all. you won't regret taking the class with Mr. Heredia. i promise!
WORST teacher I ever had. Teaches NOTHING about film, just rants politics. Thinks he's in a PS class. Can't even work the VCR. Never ONCE mentioned the $50 book, so don't buy it. Never explains assignments, had to beg just to get some vague guidelines. Doesn't teach how to write a film paper, just assigns it & never returns graded papers.
ALWAYS LATE! Assigned a student film without teaching anything about filming or editing, no equipment or resources. Has awful taste in movies, sat thru so much long, boring crap. Spent $40 on rentals. Way too much writing, 4 pgs/wk & 3 papers. So disorganized, no real lesson plan or grading criteria. This man should not be teaching a film class.
He is a very easy teacher. Just do your journals and questions and you will get an A. Even the final paper is easy if you just try. He doesn't teach you anything at all about whats in the book, but he is an easy teacher.
This is by far the best professor I have had yet at GRCC. I think he would scare the typcial conservative Grand Rapidian, that's why some people may complain about him because they can't think worldly. I loved that he didn't teach straight from the text. I always wanted to learn more about him and his lectures. I was sad when the class ended.
I'm glad to see people agree - this guy's taste and qualifications are awful. He will push his latino culture down your throat at the most innapropriate times. He's a name-dropper, even though the biggest name he knows is Edward J. Olmos. No film knowledge.
Great Teacher. Those who speak poorly of Mr. Heredia are usually to young and immature to appreciate his intelligence, he wants you to succeed and gives the tools needed to do so.
I absolutely hated him! He just went on and on about his personal life and not ONCE did we use anything that we read in the book for class discussion. He also expects you to write journal entries about the class discussions! What is there to write? His life as a former gang member? UGH.
this is one of the most amazing and inspirational teachers at CC if you let him be. if you take one second to get off YOUR pedestal, you'll step down and realize he was never on one to begin with. think about the class hes teaching, you have to get personal. this is a great class, take it if you like forward motion.
Nice guy. we only had one test the entire semester but we had to write a 2 page paper about the movies we watched each week.
He's probably a nice person, but he's a worthless professor. Journals were to be wrote about in class discussions, however, I found this task difficult because the in class discussions had nothing to do with communication and everything to do with his personal life, which I found completely irrelevant. Totally pathetic.
Umm...is this Interpersonal Communication or Heredia History? Because he talks quite a bit about himself. If only the tests asked about his life, then I would've probably ace them! Instead they were on a book that we never went over! Ughh..Overall okay class...
Probably one of the most inspiriational teachers I have had. Like said in other comments, he can get off topic, but regardless if it is related to communications, his life lessons are great. He talks to you like you are his kids and cares about his students. Great experience, even though I hated the work.

Probably my favorite professor so far. He's got a great sense of humor, and applies the lecture to topics that you can actually relate to. His final paper is really hard, but aside from that the class is a cake walk.
Heredia was pretty sweet, but sometimes he talked more about him. We never took tests but we did do alot out of the book. The paper isn't too bad if you don't procrastinate.

If you didn't know Prof. Heredia was a Vietnam vet before taking the class, you will know after. He likes to talk about his younger days a lot, but when he does talk about Speech or Communications, he does it well. The end of term paper is a piece of cake if you get off your ass and do the research.
Very interesting class. You will have alot of homework and it will be time consuming. The final exam is a 12 page paper and is tough. Go in with an open mind and you will enjoy this class, but do not put off homework it will pile up. You will use textbook alot. Professor is very interested in teaching life lessons and has a great sense of humor

This guy used this FILM class to rant about his political views. When he noticed me shaking my head one day while he was spewing his liberal crap he asked why. When i said I didn't agree with his opinions he told me that they were FACTS. Knew nothing about film. should not have been teaching this class. also his SON was in the class.
He is EXTREMELY intelligent! I was so interested in his stories, and the life he's lived with so much overcome. He was a very good teacher & understanding; I took a lot from the class.
All he talks about is how good he is at life. How fast he was in football. He just brags about himself everyday and tells stories about himself everyday. He is very interesting tho I must say. But not that fun of a teacher
He is a very good teacher. I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot. Although he does have strong opinions on politics that not everyone agrees with (like me), he still is incredibly intelligent and everyone can learn a lot from him.
He is an amazing professor. He does talk a lot about himself, however, wisdom is knowledge and knowledge is experience. In this class you will only get what you take and is based on personal growth. In saying that, if you want to learn who you are and why you do what you do, then he is perfect. I really enjoyed his leadership!
Very inspirational if you're actually looking to make it past GRCC and get a graduate level degree someday. Used to be a stand up comedian so lectures are always entertaining. The guy really knows communications and he really knows how to teach. Make sure to get an early start on the research paper! He will drag you kicking and screaming...
He is the most inspirational teacher I've ever had. He likes to talk, but his stories are fun to listen to. If your taking it for an easy A, you're not going to like this class. The final paper is 10 pgs, there's a group project and homework is due the first day of class every week. It is tough, but its a GREAT experience. I will remember him.

He is probably the most interesting professor that I have ever had. I'm taking him for interpersonal communications but we hardly ever talk about that subject. He's usually telling us different interesting stories which makes the class fun and exciting. He is very intelligent and he does his best to rub it off on you.
He is a great guy and very smart. You have to do a lot of homework, but he wants you to learn. Be prepared to listen to his political views EVERY DAY. He's a great speaker and is good at motivation you. He tells a lot of stories, some of them are interesting. don't take this class if you're looking for an easy A.
i felt as though he doesnt care about his classes. we were assigned a 12 page paper two weeks late, which was a major inconvenience. he does not care about your other priorities and has an **** attitude. i would LOVE to drop his class but can not at this point.
all he talked about was his fancy cars, how he hates president bush and how he has so much money!
this is mostly a history class about himself. as long as you do the homework and put some thought into your answers he will grade you fairly. but he always shows up at least 15mins late to class which is annoying. he is very blunt and has some good examples and stories. but he also brings politics into his lectures.
I like his personality and knowledge of life in general, but his teching style is lacking.
He is very smart, and pushes students to work hard. There is homework every week and a huge paper at the end. But this class really helped me improve and i learned a lot. He tells a LOT of stories and the book is only used for homework, never used in class.
I started the class excited but because of his heavily slanted stories of political oppinion and not getting taught and informed of what he expected I decided to drop the class. He would come in late and no show a concern for the students learning. I want to make sure I get what I can out of this class.
HATE THIS PROFESSOR! had him for interpersonal communications. if you want to take a class about someone's point of view on life then this is the class for you. he brings politics into all his lectures and tells you that your views are all wrong. you only learn about his life and nothing else in the class.
AWFUL teacher! Told pointless stories, and shares his political view every class. Its a speech class, not politics. So if you want to listen to politics and his narrow minded views, take this class. Do not recommend it!
NEVER even opened the book, NOT in class, and not for homework. Horrible teacher, assigns impossible assignments at the end of the semester. The rest of the time, we sat around and did no homework or anything. Midterm was a joke - we didn't even cover any of the information on it.
Wow-where to begin. All of you who say Heredia is "good" are SO off. Hes the absolute WORST professor ever. Thing is I didn't care if he talked about himself the entire class. What I cared about is the fact that I did all the assignments/tests & he still failed me-For a FILM class. He doesnt explain ANYTHING he actually wants done (eg the journals)
Doesn't really go over how to make public speaking easier. The class isn't as much about public speaking as much is it's about the topics you are speaking about. He's really into talking about current issues in the world. If you do the homework and do an alright job on speeches you'll get an A. Gave me 100% on every speech, even with criticisms.

Very boring lectures,talks about life story. Grades very hard,I did all assignments and did the majority of the work in the group project and still got a B for a final class grade! never hands back graded assignments.class from 10:15-12:30 with no break.
He is a very interesting guy, but is a horrible teacher. assigned way to much busy work, which he didnt grade. I did every single journal and chapter question, attended class regularly and actually spent a bunch of time on a ridiculously hard paper and got a B. He never once gave us any indication of our grades until he posted it online.
I loved this class. Prof. Heredia is smart, interesting, and encourages you to speak your opinion. I don't think anyone looks forward to public speaking, but this class helped me immensely.
Had him for public speaking. Made the class fun and interesting. Told stories about himself alot, which were interesting and funny at times. Was very laid back. Just use alot of eye contact and have your speech organized clearly, show up to class, and you will do well!
He is very multi-talented. Comedian, singer, really smart. I like him a lot. You have to write a 1page journal every class and do questions. He is late for class everyday. Likes your full attention and when you take notes even if your not sure why. Laid back and really nice guy

He is a great teacher when it comes to the person he is. Tells alot of great and funny stories. It is basically a class teaching you life lessons. There is a 12 page in depth research paper and a group presentation and paper. Every week there is a 1.5 page journal due and chapter questions. Great teacher though

Wouldn't recommend his class for communications. If you want to learn about his view on politics and how you should be a democrat then its perfect!
Waste of my time. Only talks about himself and his family and teaches you how to be a good democrat. I didn't learn anything when it came to communications and the class is planning on complaining! Only good thing is, no exams!!
His expectations were unclear. He told us to take notes and journal about the movies. When asked how we were supposed to do them, he said just do it. He didn't check or collect the journals till the end of the semester, so there was no way to tell if they were done right. No heads up on the midterm and it only covered material from day one.

Probably the worst teacher I have ever had. I never used the book and learned nothing about interpersonal communications. The absolute worst teacher to have during the election. If you are a Republican I would suggest dropping the class because you are always wrong. PS Bush is not President move on Heredia.
He was the worst professor I have ever had. When asked how to write the final project he just said to write until it was complete. When asked what that meant he never gave an answer. Do not take a class with this man. Terrible teacher
Didn't explain what was expected just told us to take notes on the Lectures which were inconsistent and ambiguous.Said that if there was a problem with the HW we were handing in he would let us know but he never mentioned it after that.Failed the class and I have no clue why because he never posted grades so I've no way of knowing what I did wrong.
If you learn by hearing stories of war, a scarred childhood, and a general lack of money, then this is the class for you. I enjoy public speaking, but all you do is 4 speeches, which he grades harshly.

Worst professor I have ever had. He is lazy and only cares about telling stories about his childhood. He has nothing important to share and shouldn't have a job teaching. He doesn't care about his students, and he complains about others not doing their job. I regret taking his class more than anything I have ever done.
Took his class 12 yrs ago. I still think of him too often as the single, worst excuse for an educater that I have seen. I was astounded that someone so incompetent could be so arrogant! Each class was an opportunity to bask in his greatness. My fondest memory? "the dialectic" . His ridiculous attempt to sound profound.

He was a great teacher. He took time to inform you of key details & the reasoning behind the film before you viewed it. He also shared personal stories that helped you relate to the films being viewed. He's very wise, open minded & eagerly involved the class in class discussions after viewing the films. This professor is the worst professor her at GRCC. I had him for a communications class but I am pretty sure I learned more about his childhood and his divorce than I did Communications. He not only gives out a ton of homework but he also never explains when anything is due. Always guessing in the class. DO NOT TAKE HIM!

Everyone in my class, including myself, didn't start the 12 page paper or group project until the last few weeks. Make sure to start those EARLY and don't procrastinate because you will regret it. The book was only used to do the chapter questions every week. There was no tests in my class. I really liked him as a teacher he has a lot of stories
He talks a lot about his life, but it's inspirational, and he also explains the book's concepts well. I would take another class of his again if I had to, but I've got a lot of other credits to take right now. He's an overall great, and funny professor. He's very helpful and I was always excited to go to his class.
4 speeches were the only assignments. expects a lot out of his students. when he goes off topic, it's entertaining and you still learn something, even if it had nothing to do with communications. practice your speeches beforehand!

Professor Heredia is one of the most inspirational and interesting professors I've had. He expects 10+ "topics for discussion" due at the beginning of each week, a page or more in length for each topic, worth 10 points total. So approximately 1 point for each page which isn't realistic whatsoever. Other than that, he's a great professor.
Take his class. It is his last year (2015-16). He has amazing lectures and connects them to life, you will take a lot from his lectures. He teaches you to think in a way I cannot explain. He will show you many concepts and many aspects of life. He has a lot of stories as well. Only true challenge is the research paper and group project,but worth it
I really enjoyed his class. His lectures are very inspiring and not boring. There are topics of discussions to do each week which I recommend to do early since the answers need to be well written. There are no tests, but there are about one or two group projects to do. There is a final paper of 12 pages which was a bit difficult, but overall great.
I took a class of his at GRCC in 2002. I have never forgotten him. Great professor!
