Prof. Hays is a good guy who treats students with respect. He's very willing to answer questions and hold a discussion even if it means skipping some of the lecture material. The big downside is the readings he assigns are VERY long and dense. But before a test he gives you a study guide so its easy to just look up what to take a closer look at.

Jude is the best. Super easy going guy & very interesting. Assigns a lot of reading but as long as you skim them its fine. Tests were hard unless you really studied for them but he curved a LOT. Everyone thought they were failing at first but no one ended up with lower than a C. No text, just articles posted online which I loved not paying for.

Prof Hays is a great guy, but is way too intelligent for an intro class. Everything he talks about is way over an undergraduate's head, and it is pointless to even go to class. If you read the book and look at the review sheets he posts before the test, you should be able to pull off a B unless you are super familiar with politics.

Jude is too smart to be teaching an intro class, but he explains material extremely thoroughly. Dr. Hays is really a smart man. His class, however, was pretty boring. I really like the content, but in lecture, he just read from powerpoints verbatim. He also posted them all online beforehand. So lecture is unnecessary. He provides study guides a week before the exams. As long as you read and use the study guide, you should get an A.

Professor Hayes is a nice guy. That being said he isn't a very good professor. Instead of learning in class you have to watch super boring and long videos that don't really help you learn the materials. Professor Hays is the man! Had him for IR and he was super accessible outside of class and genuinely cared about his students success. Highly recommend taking him.

Professor Hays is an awesome professor! He is caring and kind, and always listens to his students. His lectures can be a little dry but he is very informative and helpful.

He does the bare minimum you would expect of a professor, leaving everything to the textbook instead. He also required programming in a polisci class, and you can guess how that went (it led to me withdrawing). Lectures are boring and it's evident that he's one of the profs who just wants to do research, not teach anything. Avoid him if you can.

Posts the lectures the day before class so you don't need to go to every lecture to do well. Grades essay questions fairly tough but the quizzes are not very difficult. Assignments are relevant and well-connected to content.

An extremely caring and smart guy, but very dry lectures. Noticeable difference in grading between the two TAs. He dropped the coding portion of R which most of the class enjoyed (he should create actual guides for R because the TAs were not good at teaching). Very interesting content and the recorded lectures were useful for note-taking.

This class was my least favorite class last semester. Made me hate Global politics. The TAs were such harsh graders.

Avoid at all costs, especially if you are not a political science major. Relies on lectures recorded in 2020 and grades are mostly quizzes and memos. Open-ended on quizzes are killer and the TA does not give feedback on them or the memos. Nothing is explained well and the entire class is frustrating and confusing. DO NOT TAKE HIM.

The lectures were very dry and quizzes were difficult. Your grade depends on a couple of quizzes and foreign policy memos that the TAs grade harshly. If you're not a PS major avoid this class.

Quizzes are all unnecessarily difficult and the memos are graded too harshly for an intro-level ps class. Easy to reach outside of class, but the grading criteria isn't very clear. Wouldn't recommend for a gen-ed. Don't bother buying the textbook, there's pdfs online. Also don't trust the study guides because the terms aren't even on the quizzes.

He's a good teacher just awkward, convoluted lectures, he uses the TA's as tough graders, don't mess up the analysis section otherwise, you'll be fighting for a B-. TA is helpful but purposefully tough graders, not a good class don't take IR with Hays, take it with Pu.

Prof. Hayes' lectures were dry, which made me reluctant to attend. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he hints at important concepts for the quiz. The TA's grading was unnecessarily harsh regarding memos and quizzes. Avoid this professor if you can. I took it as a gen-ed, and it was unnecessarily difficult for an intro course.

Professor Hays is a super cool guy and probably great at teaching certain classes, but this class just made me kind of dislike International Relations in a way that I didn't think was possible.

In lecture he only reads from the slides which are taken right from the textbook, so it felt like a waste of time to go. Lots of terms from the study guides weren't on the quizzes which are graded unnecessarily harshly along with the memos. Hays showed a lot of apathy when "teaching" and I would encourage others to avoid him and this class.

Sorry, I hated this class so much. The lectures were boring, everything was graded so hard by the TA for like no reason, and I somehow found myself dislike International Relations, a subject I've been interested in since high school. He gets some points for being a cool dude you can tell knows his stuff. Study hard for quizzes and you're chillin.

I can only strive to truly love something in this world as much as Dr. Hays loves statistics and game theory. He seems like a wonderful dude, just is really not much of an engaging teacher. It is genuinely sad to say that I learned almost nothing from this class.

The only saving grace for this class was the TA. Flipped-style lecture, so you're watching 1.5-hour lecture videos every week for what should only be a 50-minute class. Doesn't provide any in-class guidance or example problems, but hands you a sheet of problems you've never been taught to solve. Be prepared to study on your own; he's so unhelpful.
