He grades very hard, but when you are in his class, you stay awak and don't mind putting forst effort because he makes you want to work for him.
Professor Ryan has been my favorite at PCC (half way through) so far. He is not the easiest professor there, but he is good enough that you don't mind doing the extra work. Classes were discussion oriented and interesting. I would recommend anyone taking Comp I/II or Intro to Lit to take professor Ryan.
He was not helpful at all. He dosn't care about helping the student. He also has no consideration for students who may have to take one day off in the semester. I don't recomened him to anyone!
Hard, but interesting
He doesn't take crap from his students. He is very clear in what he wants. Take his classes if you want good education. If you really don't like being a student, then don't waste ryan's time and take his class.
Mr. Ryan is a good teacher. He is not that easy , you actually have to read each story and pay attention to detail to pass his quizes. He explains everything very well though. Overall he makes Literature interesting.
I cant begin to tell you how much I loved his class. Mr. Ryan, is a teacher that makes you want to learn. I took him for Literature, and during the semester he had created in me a love for literature again, something that I had not felt for a long time. I was at the library a few times a week getting books that he would recommend. I did feel th
He never really talked about English.......just a/b the war in Iraq and how stupid Pres. Bush is.........he's too opinionated w/ his grading and cusses way too much........we hardly ever used the book.......just a bunch of w/s that he didn't even instruct on what to do.......i would not recommend this teacher
Ryan is by far the best professor at PCC. He makes the course extremely interesting. I always looked forward to going to class. Reading the stories and novel is a MUST, and so is paying attention to (and studying) his lectures and PowerPoints. If you do this, then you're good to go. Highly recommended!
Online class....he wasn't very easy to understand but I took fast track and its worth it. He helps when you ask but doesn't go out of his way. I wouldn't take his for a semester long class but fast track is good.
Wonderful teacher!!
Got an A in the class, but had to work very hard for it. Not a good teacher sry.
He is very unclear on how to write the papers. He is way too opinionated and make sure if he asks the class a question someone answer or he will dismiss the class. we had an hour class and we were in class for only 10 minutes.
Waste of time, he loves to talk about alcohol, sex, drugs, etc. Uses bad language in class and thinks its funny. Take someone else if you want to get a good grade, because he pretty much just writes a grade on the paper, almost like drawing straws. Not recommended at all!!!
Ryan was a good professor who did like to ramble on about useless info , but he keeps you interested and if you read the stories in depth and pay attention to what they mean then you will be ok , i made a b and yes it was hard but we did learn alot about literature , if you apply yourself and want to learn then he is a good teacher for you
I took him for Comp II and LIT. His class is fairly difficult, you have to pay attention and do your homework. You have to write a lot of papers in both of the classes. However, he makes class interesting and when your there you actually learn something. I would recommend this class to anyone who doesn't mind doing some work and wants to learn.
He's very interesting and def jokes a lot. All the readings that we do, he explains so well that it grabs your attention.
Professor Ryan is an interesting teacher, and not a particularly bad one. However, he is extremely hard to please and grades papers without even the slightest bit of mercy. He really makes papers bleed. I considered myself a rather decent writer, but he rather quickly slapped that belief right out of me. I would recommend against taking him for Enc
Truly a inspiration. I had him for Intro to Lit and Comp II. I certainly recommend him. Although difficult, his class is worth it. Since Comp II is the most important college class a student will ever take, I suggest all students at least have Ryan for this one.
I LOVED his lectures. I took him for summer A and he was clear on everything he taught. Although he grades his essay very thoroughly. Oh and he dropped 2 of our quizzes.
Ryan is an amazing professor. The only struggle that i had in his class is his grading of essays.
He likes to talk about politics, this is an English class. Also if you disagree with him don't show it. He grades his essays tuff but if you show up every day do your assingments and put effort in them you should pass and learn a few things. I think he is a jerk and I wouldnt take him again, but he did make me a better writer. For that I thank him.
Professor Ryan thinks he's right no matter what, and he's proud of that. He doesn't make assignment due dates clear at all. He doesn't have a proper syllabus. He grades essays ridiculously hard, half the time it seems like he doesn't even read them and just slashes a low grade on the paper. I do NOT recommend this teacher whatsoever.
i took his class on summer. i didn't like him at all. his essay grade is very hard. he might think that all of the students are who are taking this class are liguistics. i hated his class.
Grades essays with an iron fist, I had one essay that was a B the rest where C?s. I had gotten an A in Comp one and got a C in this class. If you can find another professor that grades a little nicer than do it. As a teacher he is not bad just grades hard. Be Warned!
Grades essays pretty hard but a good teacher. Have him for LIT 1000 and I like the course.
to much busy work.
He is super funny in his lectures and you do work, but his explanations are eye-opening. I took him for Summer A and passed with an A. He really is a good professor. He'll help you whenever you need it. Lectures are HILARIOUS!!
Great professor, took him in the summer term.
Do the papers, and study for the test, even the last one because you will drop a whole letter grade if you fail a test
Grades papers hard. This is not an easy A class, however you will learn a lot. Definitely helped me learn how to write better papers. Listen to his directions in class! I liked that he kept the class interesting and always had us write about current events.
Grades Really Hard!!! I have always A grade papers. Not with him every paper I got a C- he never returned our final paper so I don't know what I got. I was surprised I passed with a C I thought I had failed for sure.
He grades tough but not on an opinionated basis. I made A's in his ENC and LIT classes. Often, teachers grade too easy and when you walk into Prof. Ryan's class and are shocked by low grades, just know that your easy A teachers only provided you a huge disservice. College is about aquiring new skill sets and techniques..not have your hand held.
Great guy and soo funny! He has a way of teaching that is so intriguing. When he tells stories you are drawn in by the beauty of his voice and how he keeps you in suspence. He also keeps it interesting and open for discussion. Take him! He isn't that hard on grading...But the teachers that grade higher push you to do better and succeed.
pretty hard class and he gives out a lot of essay's to do
Attention anyone who is reading this. I made an account on here just to rate this professor. There is NO syllabus, leaving you to guess when assignments are due if you cannot decipher the gibberish he speaks in class. His voice isn't clear, he's not helpful, his class isn't helpful. He's the kind of teacher who gets off on making kids feel stupid.
Lectures are interesting and insightful and he picks great material. However, he's unnecessarily picky with his grading. He grades papers based on whether or not he would have written them the same way rather than whether or not the material is correct. He also slaps the same grade/comment on every paper; "Generally good work overall."
He is very condescending and will tear anything you turn into him to shreds. Be ready for a very unhelpful, rude, and strict person when you take his class. Instead of teaching and telling you that you should do this instead of that, he will say "why did you do this for no apparent reason" and make you feel like an idiot.
I took him before when I was an idiot 21-year-old who just wanted to goof off and failed. 6 years later, I got an A in his class because I took notes, paid attention, and did assignments according to the directions. It wasn't hard to do. He is tough on students because they need it. Thoroughly enjoyed this class and learned a LOT.
I get our professors are supposed to be hard on us but I thought they would want to see us succeed. I emailed this professor and asked if there was a way I could improve my grade, his answer "you should consider taking the W" I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL. DON'T DO IT, HE TALKS TO YOU AS IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE A BRAIN.
Prof Ryan is by far the best English teacher I have had. He makes class fun and interesting. His quizzes are straight from the stories you read in the text. Although, his exams will make you question yourself. I would def recommend Ryan.
I had Ryan for Comp 2, and I must say he's a pretty cool teacher. He was really funny to our class and we all had an open mind. Sometimes, I felt excited to attend his class. Yes, he grades tough, but I think if you're on his good side, he'll let you slide. I deserved a D in that class, but passed with a C+.
Prof Ryan is incredibly funny, amusing and thought provoking! Lit class came alive (at 7:30 AM!) and it was worth getting up early. I will say, however, that he grades on a very, very tough scale. Pay attention to details!!
VERY PICKY when it comes to grading. He focuses on how he would have written the paper vs. whether it was written correctly. AND beware should you write about something controversial that he does not agree with. He expects you to know your audience and write to satisfy them. He refuses to believe everyone can't agree on everything.
Great teacher great man that is full of great understanding and knowledge. Just go to class and listen to what he said to say and you will pass and take note *sparknotes*
I loved Professor Ryan! You can tell he loves what he does, and I actually enjoyed coming to class! If you are looking for an easy A don't take him, but if you want to actually learn something than I would suggest him.
I felt he used his personal opinion on the subject matter that you wrote. So if he did not agree with your subject you got a C. I did not find him very helpful either. I will not take him again.
Condescending and arrogant. I would NEVER take him again!
Took him for Comp 2, he assigned quite a few short papers and they were graded strictly. He was more lenient on the longer papers. The course was supposed to be hybrid, but he puts very little information online. You dont need any textbooks. Lectures are pretty good though.
Professor Jude is a great teacher , I'm sure I will pass this class with an A. He gives a quiz the beginning of every class but long as you read the short story prior to class you'll be fine. His test are complicated but once again if you read all the material you'll be fine .
This teacher is a very tough grader. If he does not agree with your opinion he critics every single little thing there is to grade. I had got a C on every assignment in this online course. He thinks you need to be a professional writer, when most of us is just starting out. Harsh grading. Bad explaining on assignments. Wont take this teacher again.
absolutely awful i would not recommend taking him.
Jude Ryan Is a very spirited person whom makes sure you understand the assignments he has given. His lectures are very helpful and has great clarity. I highly recommend taking him. Jude Ryan does give pop quizzes at the beginning of each class, and if you are late and do not have an excuse you will not be able to take the quiz.
It was such a joy to take this class. I loved listening to his lectures and stories. He's hilarious and always keeps class interesting with discussions and debates throughout. Our only homework was reading the short stories and he gives a quiz on it at the beginning of class. And there's only two research papers to do. Take this class!
Professor Ryan cares about his students. He expects participation, and if you seem reserved he will try to get you to come out of your shell. He does assign a lot of reading and while I did well in this class a lot of people struggled. If I could, I would have taken him again. one of my favorites.
Professor Ryan was great! One of the few college classes I have taken where I'm actually engaged in the lectures and not falling asleep. All you need to do to pass this class is read, because he quizzes over the reading each week and take some notes. Only assigns two papers and he gives you plenty of time to get them done. Would take again!
Not quite sure how he was allowed to teach a class in the first place. No encouragement at all from him. All he did was criticize and basically call me dumb. Worst teacher ever
For every reading there is a quiz and it's fill in the blank so it is difficult. It's hard to make an A, but overall good course. 7/10.
Funny lectures. Readings to do before every class and quick quiz on the readings (he drops the 2 lowest quiz grades). 2 papers for the semester. If you do everything and are right on the line of the next letter grade, he will usually bump it up for you. Super nice and approachable. Definitely would recommend for an easy A in LIT1000.
Doesn't seem to understand constructive criticism (forgets the constructive part.) Constant passive aggressive comments , actually asked me why I wrote so much. I love English but this guy made me hate writing. It's very difficult to write for someone who is never helpful or satisfied. Told me my final paper was "moot" and grades based on opinion.
Professor Ryan is passionate about English and is an excellent choice for ENC1102. We wrote a lot of essays but he gave us a week to write each one and they were all on varying topics and involved us executing the skill he taught earlier in the week. His hand outs are excellent and the only way you will fail is by being lazy. Go to class.
He's a mixed bag. His expectations and due dates are clear; however, he personally is ridiculously condescending and arrogant, which results in snarky comments left on graded essays. I felt that I'd paid to listen to this guy ramble about politics rather than teach. To end the class, he made us watch a poem about how bad straight people are.
Prof Ryan is a tough grader, but if you turn your paper in ahead of time he'll tell you how to fix it to get an A. He gives easy quizzes at the beginning of each class based on the reading, which add up if you ditch often but also bring your grade up tons if you do the reading. For the midterm/Final he gives you study guides with the answers.
He likes to talk a lot about politics. Our first paper is on the obamacare. I personally won't take him again, i don't like his style of teaching. He is very clear about his papers, and you will receive a lot of papers to read, just because. I can tell he is very passionate about english we'll see how this semester ends!!
Professor Ryan is very passionate about what he believes, and if you disagree, (as I did in one of my papers) he will grade you based on it. He talked about politics more than writing itself, and when a student politely asked what politics had to do with our papers, Ryan told him to be quiet and let him finish. I would not recommend to anyone.
He's an amazing professor, I've had him for both comp 2 and lit and he is definitely a tough grader but just submit your paper to smart thinking or go to the tlcc and you'll get an A. If you read, participate, and listen you'll do great. People think he grades based off of politics but really their usually just poorly written papers.
DONT TAKE HIM. I'm only halfway through the class and I can't stand him. His lectures are very political, everything somehow relates to politics or religion. He gave me awful feedback on my paper, he was rude and didn't give any helpful suggestions at all. If you can avoid it, do yourself a favor and take someone else.
Not the teacher to take for an easy A. Very harsh grader, but he works with you if you put in the effort.
I love him!!! He is so amazing and really makes sure you understand the material. If you have any questions he will answer them outside of class. He takes his class and work very seriously. He is of the more liberal variety but if you disagree with I'm it won't affect your work (unless you're racist, then it will).
i wouldnt recommmed him.
The worst. Don't take him. rude
This professor is really amazing and interesting. He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches. He cares if you are doing well and even if your not, he wants to help. The only thing I can say is, he runs over the allotted time for class almost everytime by about 5 minutes or so. When you are not just a student it can get frustrating.
He lectures only what will be on the quizzes or tests majority of the time. He is a funny professor to have and will give out helpful advice when you ask. But when turning in a paper, make sure you do everything he asks. He is opinionated on what work citation you use and sometimes his comments he leaves are rude and unnecessary.
horrible teacher
terrible teacher who grades too hard and expects too much
I took him in 1994 and 95 (Literature and Enc1102. He doesn't appear to have changed one iota. I appreciated his candor and his tough grading. His lectures always spill over, yet I found them to be of some profit. Definitely of the liberal/academic sort. Overall he inspired me to become a better writer.
Straight to the point professor. Provides clear direction and solid feedback. Do your work and you'll pass.
Has no idea what good writing looks like. Every assignment given had typos on them which is a big no no from an English professor. Never explained his expectations for his class. Most students dont know how to please him because we dont know what he wants
Unclear expectations of this professor. He grades you on your opinion, not your writing. As an English class, all the points taken off my papers were about my opinion, not my grammar skills. I had submitted all my assignments to several tutors and didn't get a grade over a C. If you don't have his opinion you will not get a good grade.
Save yourself. Unless you love politics and you agree with him, don't take this class. He is very rude. Most of my class are withdrawing.
Lectures were always interesting and the short stories were great selections that were intriguing. You get graded on quizzes for the short stories and everything, so be aware. The class was in depth on hidden messages or morals in plays, short stories, and books.
He was okay at first, I loved his lectures, but he does NOT explain enough information about what to do on your essays just gives you a paper. If you are not the person to ask a question or a person who keeps trying to understand then you won't pass the class. He has quizzies every class and your homework is to read a short long story.
Professor Ryan loves what he does and it reflects upon his lectures. If you are serious about fine arts, reading, and writing or just mature and understanding, you are in for a real treat.
Get ready to laugh! Ryan was funny and taught the material well. Some may say he strayed off topic but his stories and comments relayed the same information from powerpoints in a funny manor.
Professor Ryan is a thorough, and overall really good professor. He does a good job keeping the lectures interesting by relating the material to more relevant topics. Make sure you use your time wisely when writing the essays, know how to cite a paper, and just read the sparknotes for the short story quizzes, especially for Barn Burning!
Worst Professor I have ever had. Save your money.
Quizzes on weekly reading every class, I always took notes about characters and symbolic things, that got me by. 12-14 quizzes, 5-10 questions each, he takes the best 10 to get a grade out of 100. 2 Essays, 4-6 pages not including works cited. Feedback on essays is minimal. No makeups for quizzes, be on time!! TAKE NOTES!!!
Brilliant. Lectures were always interesting, learned something new about stories Id read before. He makes you look at everything in a different light. Quizzes were fill in the blank and specific sometimes, so beware of those. We used the textbook all the time. Overall, Im glad I took his class.
At first he was okay but then he got really political. It became so awkward to the point that it didnt matter what political side you were on, this professor was just annoying and awkward. A little extra insight is nice but this is all his lectures have evolved to he is completely off track just venting about random things.
I was very worried when I read other ratings, but this Professor is not that bad! I got 100% on a paper that I put together in two hours and the two lowest-scoring quizzes get removed from your grade. He does talk a lot about religion and politics, but who doesn't anymore? The lectures are made fun by his passion for the subject. Quizzes on reading
Taking a class with this guy is truly an experience. He will make you uncomfortable in many settings and ask the weird hard questions. Makes his views known and questions faith too much. This is a college lit class not an interrogation. I think the school would be surprised by his attitude if they sat in a class. Great teacher and clear grading
Mr Ryan speaks very biblical and at times he will ask questions to make you feel uncomfortable to answer. He is a very tough grader so unless your very very good at doing essays and remembering basically every detail of his lectures you wont pass.
I have never taken a more harder class than this one. He is very nit picky about written assignments and quizzes when it comes to grammar. I basically felt that if my grammar wasn't 100% correct then I was going to get a 50%.
He completely failed everyone on the first assignment for no reason. Then I met with him to discuss my paper and he said he would give me the opportunity to redo them. I only messed up on something minor but got a D. Then once I re-did them he refused to regrade them. As someone who retook ENC 1102 again and got an A , I don't recommend him at all
Professor Ryan will make you feel uncomfortable, he grades hard and he's too opinionated
Don't even think about taking his classes, save yourself the headache.
Save yourself. Unless you love politics and you agree with him, don't take this class.
I have never taken a harder class than this one. He is very nitpicky about written assignments and quizzes when it comes to grammar.
I dropped from the course because he had insulted my intelligence on the first assignment. I realized this course would be more of a headache than it was worth. If you are dual-enrolled be ready to be the best student in the class or he will tell you to go back to high school English... Ridiculous
He was an okay teacher. His lectures were interesting & he showed a lot of slide shows & videos. Sadly his lectures were always behind so I could never use the material for the next paper or exam. He is a tough grader & is very picky. He is available for ?s pretty often so thats a plus. If you have no prior history writing college papers RUN.
The most bias professor on this earth. This professor plays favorites and will make more work than necessary. as well as giving students he doesn't like a failing grade. watch out take this professor at your own risk. i would advise staying away from taking him unless it's your only option.
Don't mind all the negative reviews because they are simply not true. I took professor Ryan for both of my English classes and enjoyed it very much! Yes, he is nitpicky on your essays but he gives you a second chance to redo them if you submit them earlier. His advice helps improve my essays and is very accessible outside the classroom!
He doesnt have a rubric for the writing assignments. I received the very same grade for all of the essays,73. For instance, the research paper at the end was on prison reform. I interviewed 3 current inmates and gave statistics his only response: what do you mean by prison reform? What needs improvement? Nothing on structure to explain grade.
Tough grader on essays (nitpicky). The feedback he gives online for essays isn't the most helpful because he doesn't show what the correct version would look like. In class, he will go around the room to check on your essay and the feedback he gives then is good. I also enjoyed the discussions we had in class. Overall neutral on taking this prof.
There is no actual rubric for any of the essays. Each week there is a 1 page paper or a full length 500 word essay due, the next one is due before you get a grade on the first one to use the feedback for improvements. He'll say there is only 1 reason to write a paper but then will rip it apart while grading it. Just awful with his clarity! RUN RUN!
I was worried when I read the comments of all the students. English is not my first language and I was supper scared because of all the comments, but he was amazing. I usually don't write reviews for nobody, but I hope that if you are thinking on taking the ENC1102, take it with professor Ryan, he is a very good professor.
I don't think this professor is qualified to teach English. ALL of his instructions were either unclear or had spelling errors. He will mark you off for an essay or a discussion post without telling you what was wrong with it. I was able to pass with a C but if you don't agree with him on everything he will mark you down.
Professor Ryan is one of my favorite professors at Polk State. Yes, he is a tough grader. Yes, he will challenge your beliefs; however, if you listen to his instructions, participate in class, and work hard, you will enjoy his class. I had professor Ryan in Comp1102 and Lit1000 and I enjoyed both classes. Work hard and you will enjoy his class.
Very tough grader. He Nitpicks at literally everything he personally didn't like in your papers. A little biased. Talked a lot about world issues, such as politics, etc. Gives two chances for each essay if you submit it a couple of days early. Final grammar exam and Research paper. He does have a lot of writing.
The Professor is funny, gave a quizes most of the times on tuesday of short storys assigned and then their woukd be discussions but they were good and there was only 2 easy papers to write and a question easy and the final exam was very easy based on the storys, I honestly could of gotten a B but I papers sucked other then that easy class.
I took his online 6 week class during the summer semester. Never got below a 73 on an essay. Professor Ryan is a pretty tough grader. If you sign up for this class, make sure you have good knowledge of grammar and punctuation. Be specific in your writing and try not to be vague or broad.
I love Professor Ryan! Easily one of my favorite professors. His lectures are very funny and he is good at keeping students engaged. There are weekly tests on short stories/poems, which can be a little bit tricky. Make sure you pay attention to details.
I am not sure why he has such a low rating. I will agree that he is very biased on his own opinions though. He is actually a funny guy and if you do your work and show that you are trying, he is very helpful. A lot of writing in this class though. We used the text book once, waste of money tbh. Taking him again for LIT.
As most of the reviews say, immensely biased. Which is unacceptable. I emailed him asking for assistance multiple times but never get a response. I'm not sure about favorite but he makes it clear if he hates you by ignoring you. Is extremely critical of papers but not constructive, will point out flaws, but not advise you on how to fix them.
Just don't pick his class if you're not great an English
Professor Ryan can be tough, but if you put in the work, he's surprisingly helpful. The class has a lot of writing, so use tools like Unstuck study and the textbook to stay on top of it.
Professor Ryan was pretty rude. He graded my essays as a B or lower, never an A. One time, he only picked on my word choices. He told me that "majorly" wasn't a word (???) and basically that calling a death "tragic" is dumb. Don't ever put your opinions into your writing, even if the paper is meant to be opinionated. He WILL judge you.
He is a tough grader but an amazing teacher, he makes classes really enjoyable and is really passionate about his lectures .
Never had a worse experience. There is no telling what she will dislike about your paper. I have always gotten good grades with writing, but with her I struggle to get over 50%. She will take issue with your writing style, even if it is correct, if she doesn't like the words you use. Also, a comp teacher shouldn't have so many typos in her emails.
Inconsistent grading. Turned in a discussion a few hours before due and got an 8/10. Turned in another one the day before due and got 7/10. Points taken solely on when turned in. Seemed like he was grading essays based on his own opinion. Mentioned something he disagreed with? Points taken off. He left snarky comments on every essay I submitted.
I would definitely take this class again! I learned a lot about English, especially since it's not my first language. he is very patient. His assignments are somewhat demanding, but he helps you a lot if you have questions, especially in person. He's always there to help with whatever you need. His quizzes were very short and simple.
Very good professor. He was very ecstatic about the essays he would assign. Plus, he'd give back decent criticism toward the essays and if you turned it in early he'd let you go back and resubmit with the fixes. My only complaint was how strict of a grader he was. Overall, not bad and he had a good sense of humor.
