Great professor! Very generous in giving partial points..but tests are bit challenging.
great teacher,he will answer every question you ask. his test is not hard if you went to class
He was a great professor. Great explanations, partial points always helped. He drops worst score. And gives you points for homework that you don't turn in until the day of the test, you don't even have to finish it.
Need Help ? He is the key for all question =D
he is very clear and organize. you will be surprise on his intelligence. Challenge him with any question, he will answer you. one of the best teachers you can have in your life. His tests are challenge and fun. (not easy)
Great Personality!Highly Recommented!
He is the best!!!!
Mr.Socrates is so.... good teacher.. even though his test is a little bit challenging, he always more grades than you actually get... i like him.. he's very clear.. and he's humorous too... not boring.. and he knows MATH.. (try to ask any question..)
he's funny, easy to approach, can drop the lowest test score, clear explanation and lots of examples
Best math prof at PCC. Good but very hard!
Dude, the best math teacher I've ever had. He is so cool, I look forward to going to his class every time. He makes learning precalc. fun! He's such a dork, I feel at home, lol. Right on!
Damm, i think he is simply the best Math Teacher i had in all my life. 1 thing bad about him is his tests are way too hard, however he give a lot of partial credits even if u r totally wrong. Prepare to do a lot of work if u take him. ^_^
A lot of homehork( aren't all math class the same?) If you do the home work, tests are 90% easy, lectures are clear, prepared teacher, helpful, best math teacher in my life...........We love you DR. Socrates!!!!!
The BEst teacher you can have in your LIFE~!
Wow... he is the best....and so experienced. I think I'm going to take his 5C again... But,... he gives a lot of homework. Almost every single problem he assigned us to do.
Jude Socrates is an advisor for ALPHA GAMMA SIGMA HONOR SOCIETY. He's currently a permanent member.
He teaches very well and clear, his hand writing is nice, too. But his tests are a little hard to the normal people.
He is the best. The lecture is very clear. Much homework. The test is hard, but if you have the right idea, he will give you partial credit or take a little points even you don't get the right answer.
It is not the teacher that is hard it is the subject, its calculus for christ sake! However, he does make it much more interesting and much easier than most professors at PCC.
He's a very nice teacher, always with smile on his face. He did explain everything and you will sure understand if you are concentrated during the lecture. Good problems on the tests sometimes out of students' expectations, but I like them.
He's a very good teacher, his lectures are very concise and very stuctured. He will not hesitate to offer more explaination if needed in his lectures. His exams are very difficult, he does not take examples out of the book, he makes up his own problems.
he is a very good teacher!Althought he gave a lot of hw,it helps you get clear of the things.those exams are difficult but you will learn a lot from him.anyways,he is good, and nice!!!
Mr Socrates is a VERY helpful math teacher, and just like everyone says, he's really hard also. But as well as you did the homework carefully, you would be fine. (His notes are EXTREMELY important cause the test questions are just from there)
He is NICE but he is HARD!!! He can start lecture from 1st minute we enter the classroom till the last minute we out of class room.... very delight and work hard professor. He is not easy. PS.I hate his laughing..so gay~
He is very intelligent and I'd say one of the best teachers in the campus. Very easy to work with and very helpful. HE IS KINDA HARD IN A WAY BUT....HEYYYY FOR YOUR OWN GOOD KIDS....Well, I've been getting straight "A" in his class, so no compla
Decent teacher. Examples given in lecture are simple, unlike the problems on the tests, which are IMPOSSIBLE!!! He assigns WAAAAY too much homework. Hardest math teacher i've ever had. Have fun tryin to pass his class
You guys said it all, he's the best teacher... teachers can't get any better than this: hard-working, clear lecture, good teaching method... If you can't pass his class, then you got a problem
He is a very hard teacher. Demands a lot, BUT he does teach. Tests are very hard but the thing is he teachs you instead of force feeding you and he gives very good examples of what section we're working on. If you want to learn then this is the guy.
Nice teacher. He teaches very hard, and gives very clear explaination of examples. The tests are difficult, and there are a lot of homework, A LOT! But it helps. I got a passing grade with B, thanks for homework. After his class,I find I've learned a lot.
He is the most smartest professor I've ever seen. His lecture is clearly but his test is hard if you have the motivation to go to UCLA. If you get A on his first two test, be ready to get an F on his third test. The rest is easy. I get an A in his class.
Damn this guy i hardcore! There are total of 5 tests and 1 final during summer session and I got D's on the first 3. Fornately at the end, im able to pull my grade up to a B. If u want an eaz teacher, this is not for u!
His test is harder than the Cal-Tech entrance exam,if you take his class you will learn something
He gives clear explanations. It is as if almost you didnt need that Stweart book. Tests are hard, but I think fundations are very important. If you have questions he will answer with the big smile ;). Great teacher.
Dr.S explains things very well, gives lots of examples and is always willing to help students-great attitude.BUT tests are very difficult. Most students didn't finish the tests in the time allowed. Unless you're good at math, choose another instructor.
Take his class, you will really learn something.perhaps the tests are not easy, but if u practice enough, A is not a problem.
I've taken Calculus B before so I guess I have a different perspective on this. He's a good teacher and extremely helpful to other students (just think, his last name is Socrates). I hear that if you're going into engineering he's the guy to talk to. His tests are challenging though.
the most helpful teacher ive ever had. Dr.Socrates is truly gifted at teaching..an excellent teacher with a GREAAAT smile. Tests come from hard part of HW, groupworks..not easy.
Okay, quite possibly the kindest professor in the whole college --it was tough but fair, and he is SOOOO helpful!
He's great man. Gotta tell ya that, he's the best Math teacher in the whole San Gabriel Valley( accept those in Caltech :D), ever! He's ok for the test, great for the personality, wonderful for the smile and excelent at academich skill. I won't take 5C 'till he decide to teach it again. He's koollll
He is the best math teacher I have EVER had. He's not easy, but his lectures are clear and easy to understand. He gives a lot of HW, and tests you on what he teaches you. Tests are hard but fair, and he is a generous grader. He is very approachable, and always answers questions. TAKE HIM!!!!
take his class, if u want to learn math, and also if you want to have a good enviromental.overall students in his class is good at math. His lecture is very clear.he can explain a lot better than text book. His test evaluate a lot of things ,how good u are at math. if u want to get a real A, take hi
he is a nice guy. Test is hard but fair. If you can go over his lecture notes really carefully, you would be ready for the changlleging test.
Tests are hard.. lots people failed in last test. but anyway, he is very good.

Requires quit amount of work. The class was tough, but I think it's because of the topics, not him. He explains things very well. You actually learn in his class. He's nice and easy to talk to. Always there to help you. Also highly organized. 5 exams 60%, group work 10%, and final 30%.

Dr. Socrates is a great professor, he is very clear and does not throw surprises at you. his tests are a reflection of the problems done in class. Even though that is the case, his exams are extremely difficult. i find it hard to get an A. the best ive done so far is a B+.
nice guy but too hard
he is my super hero! I love him
Dr. Socrates is awesome! He's kind, helpful and funny. He's fair when it comes to the grading scale. Wonderful professor, if you ever have the opportunity, you should take him.
Very nice teacher, loves his math and knows it well. His notes are almost identical to the book's, reasonable amount of HW, tests are a bit difficult but he is extreamly generous when it comes to graiding. His graiding method is a bit weird, your test score depends on how much homework you do and lots of group work.
One of the best teachers i have ever had the honor of taking. The best math teacher by far. Even though I got a C in his class, I still know my calculus. He is merciful with grading and for his tests, you had better know the material inside out since time is of the essence. Yes, he is very hard, but is an extremely good teacher.
you better take him if you want to learn
Amazing instructor. I never had a passion for Calc, but after taking 5C with him, I wish I had taken him for 5A and B. His humor is infectious and the group work makes the class cake. Put in the hard work and he'll notice. Best professor I've ever had. Ever.
great teacher.
You don't just "take" Socrates, you experience Socrates. Calculus could not find a better spokesperson.
he makes difficult stuffs easier. tests are not too easy, but u will feel familiar if u do groupwork well. it also makes his test a little bit boring because u will just feel like plugging numbers into problems.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER, he is very organized, clear and helpful. Gives tons of HW and the tests seem hard but after doing ur HW and listen to this lectures, they are just pieces of cake. I cannot imagine a better professor than him. He acts kind of weird... at the beginning i thought that bhe is kind of... *** i guess...
very good professor. teaches well and keeps things upbeat and fun. Truly loves what he teaches and has a great sense of humor. However, his grading system is VERY, VERY hard.
I hate math, I fear math, if you hate or fear math you must must must take the wonderful Mr. Socrates. He is so kind, so patient, and he MAKES HARD CONCEPTS CLEAR. TAKE HIM!!!
GREAT teacher. if you need help just ask him. he will be willing to help you. he makes stuff clear. i mean if you dont get math. take him he will help YOU JUST HAVE TO ASK. and do your homework. i woould take him again =]

HARD TESTS!
very clear for lecture, tests are very hard compare to other math professors. 40 students(if i am correct) at the beginning, 25 left after drop date... 7 ppl has A in class at the end of semester... ALOT of hw(almost forgot)
BEST MATH TEACHER AT PCC!!! BY A LONG SHOT!!! HIS LECTURES ARE GREAT!!! HIS TESTS ARE HARD... BUT HE IS VERY GENEROUS WHEN IT COMES TO GRADING THEM!!! IF YOU ARE A MATH, ENGINEERING, OR SCIENCE MAJOR YOU HAVE TO TAKE SOCRATES!!! IF YOU DONT LIKE MATH AND ARE NOT WILLING TO WORK HARD THEN STAY AWAY!!!... LOVED AND ENJOYED HIS CLASS!!!
clear
BEST TEACHER,HARDEST TEST
Excellent teaching. Would definitely recommend. Hard tests though but it's worth it.
He is an excellent teacher and he is from Cal tech, he shows lectures are clear and understandable. However,DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. His quiz are oK to pass but his test and midterm will make you FAIL the class. he spends time going over HW and explain on it. If you do plan to take theres a HIGH chance you will drop or recieve a grade you do not want
If you are Math major and plan to go to CalTech or UCLA or UCBerkeley, take him, cuz he'll show you what the word "Math" really means. Im not gonna say hard tests, but challenging, yes. But you'll get at least a B for studying hard. His tests always gave me a heart attack though I never scored under 91.
He is awesome. I have never had a good understanding of math, he changed that and I will forever be grateful. His tests are challenging, but not impossible.
Dr. Socrates is Superman!!! The lecture is very clear and interesting, which you can easily follow up. His own textbook is extremely helpful and much easier than others. Actually, if you understand all the stuffs you've learned, the tests won't be hard at all.
Dr Socrates is one of the best professors I have ever had! He is quite funny, writes clearly, and really explains the material well. The class was difficult even after having taken AP Calculus, but his explanations made it the best it could have been. With out a doubt, Dr. Socrates is the ideal math instructor! Take the class with him!
he is the funniest! he's filipino.. PROPS!! he's really helpful.. he teaches at a moderate pace; not fast or slow.. if you need help, he is always willing to help.. also, he's really patient and understanding.. so take him!
Dr. Socrates "6'2" Math Professor has the best "professional" teaching attitude with smiles. Extremely tolerant & patient. Plenty of homework after every chapter, so don't fall behind. Lots of material is covered in class, so stay awake. Highly recommended. Out of all my freshmen professors, Socates = Rank #1. Wish he taught Math 5A.
he's AMAZING!!! NICE, HELPFUL, FUNNY, KNOWLEGABLE...seriously, take him!!
Nice guy. Excellent teacher. The class is challenging but not that hard. You need to put in a substantial effort if you want to do well. 5 Tests (60%), groupwork (10%), and final (30%). No dropped tests or extra credit. I would definetly recommend Socrates because you will leave his class with a full understanding of all the material.
Very good lecture and it is very helful. The examines are quiet difficult. Work hard!
He's a nice and knowlege teacher. But I hate his honesty. I got approximately 88%, he gave a B, though this B is more valuabe than an A from other teacher. I'm thinking to take him in the future.. Good luck!!
He is the best math professor!! His lecture is very clear and interesting, and he is very humorous. He gives lots homework, but it's good practice. Once you understand the homework and groupwork, the test is not hard at all. I like him so much!! :)
Dr.Socrates is the best math teacher. He is really funniest teacher! However, you need to do groupworks after every chapeter and homeworks, but it really helps.I miss him.Take him!
I love this teacher he is awesome! He was the first math teacher I took at PCC and he is really helpful. He reviews the homework and study guide before exams and problems on exams are similar to all the review. Easy to get an A as long as you do the homework and review his notes. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Though his class isn't necessarily easy, it is pretty straightforward so long as you do the homework. The test problems were always similar to homework or groupwork. Very smart and neat, and he always knew what he was talking about. My favorite teacher at PCC so far. :)
He is very smart, nice and helpful, But he is kinda hard.Requires you to do all the hw problems in the book. Problems in tests are pretty similar to group work and hw, but unpredictable, you never know which problem will show up, so better understand everything! Final will be a lot easier. Don't stress, it's not hard to get a B.
I love Socrates!! I took his 5B&5C, and I feel sad that he is not gonna teach math55:( I want to be his student forever! An absolutely extreamly wonderful teacher!! He is so smart and so nice, and you will learn a lot from his class!!! I love Socrates!!take him take him!!
His class was not easy. His lectures are clear and he is very helpful, but he likes to challenge his students on tests. However, test questions are always modeled as how the groupwork is modeled, so the questions would be something you've seen before. He is a great professor with a sense of humor, and although i struggled in his class, i loved it!
You should only beware because coming out of this class.. you will love math. HE IS THE BEST ON CAMPUS and I wish I could take all my classes with him. I don't think theres anyone who didnt like him. AND he's really smart and nice.
Easy Teacher. Test based on group work, so nothing new. Explains really well on the board. I would recommend this teacher above all teachers. Choose him, and get your money worth. I got an A in the class and learned alot. Thanks Socrates.
Best math teacher at PCC. Nice, approachable and very clear and good at teaching. And I think he grades the most fair of all the math teachers I've had so far at PCC
I took Math 9 for his class and I've already taken this class in high school. It changed the way I understand math and the way how Math 9 can be complicated. At first, I acted a bit cocky and underestimated his class cuz it was Math 9 (supposedly easy for me). However, when the tests came down on me, I was confused & shocked. But he is excellent.
He is not that hard as most people said. Tests are based on group works. Once u do all the group work and review them before the tests u'll be fine. Homework might be a lot but no pain no gain.
He is not that hard if you DO WORK, I highly recommend everyone to take him. I took Math Path3 with him, he explained everything super clear and there's no questions about math that he couldn't answer. Very helpful professor, BEST math teacher in PCC.
I took Dr. Socrates for Math Path 3; we've just finished it and I'm quite sad since I take his MP4 class- conflicted schedule.Exams, they are similar to group work with a little more twist on them. So,you must do homework & groupwork, read the book, attend all lectures. And preview before class. I finished 5A with a B and 5B with A. funny, I know.
To begin, Dr. Jude Socrates is the best college math professor there is. If you never liked math or had little interest, there's something in the way he teaches and explains it to you. I took him for Precalc and for Math Path 3. It was hard, but bcuz I was lazy. He called me out once to the board. Since then he's motivated me. I love 'em & MATH.
For those majoring in Engineering or Physics, you need a challenge; therefore you must take him. Not only does his class expand your way of looking at numbers, but he cares for each student. His book is well written. MUST UNDERSTAND and complete the groupwork. MUST complete ALL PROOFS assigned. DO NOT procrastinate and ASK questions or else...D/F.
I took his class (Math Path for 5c and 10) in this spring. Like people say, he is the BEST, but you must want to learn math. If you just want to earn an A for your class, I don't recommend him. You have to be dedicated in what you are doing and ask anything that is unclear for you. Dr. Socrates will give answers ALWAYS^_^.
Excellent instructor! The "Yoda of Math" - take him & you'll know what I mean! Do ALL of the online homework, in-class group work & sample test questions - they all help on his tests and count toward your grade. Tests are not easy but he gives credit for trying. Final was easier than expected. ASK QUESTIONS if you don't understand something!
my ABSOLUTE favorite math teacher in the WORLD. easiest class i've ever taken in my life. all you have to do is do the online homework, go to class everyday for lecture and do groupwork. exam are really and are based on the review you do the day before the exam and groupwork so make sure you dont miss any day! oh and his voice cracks a lot too ahah
This Guy is THE BEST math teacher to have ever lived. He could teach calculus to brick a wall.
He is serious but fun.
Best Professor ever! He will make you think deeply about every concept and make you related concepts together. Even though you have to study hard for it, after all, this is how we learn !!!
This guy is the yoda of math if you try you can not get less than a b, its impossible.
cool guy, great teacher. fun class (for math)
He is a really, truly fantastic teacher. I wish he taught more classes that I need to take
Really great professor. He'll make you a math god. His lectures are crystal clear, and his format is simple to follow. I took his summer course and although it was difficult, I understood everything I learned. Some friends and I set up a study group and we got they got As and I got a B.
The best teacher ive ever taken in my life. i also took him for math ten. He will explain and answer questions and he will help you if you struggle hard like i did in his office hours. If you try even a little you can not get anything less than a B, it is impossible.
I doubt there could be a better professor out there. Best professor ever.
Overall Prof. Socrates was a pretty good teacher. However for my pace he went a little too fast. At the beginning I did fine cause most of the stuff we went over was from math 125 but after the first couple of tests I had a hard time keeping up. He has a wonderful sense of humor but if your not used to learning at a fast pace take someone else
I took his math 5B on summer, and it's 8 wks course. although it deprives my summer vacation, I love to take his class. He prove the formula we need to use and he will review the basic math equation before applied it into calculus. Best ever prof. in PCC. Total 5 tests and he will drop the lowest one and double the second highest score. Take him !
very nice, makes jokes, goes by quickly. we used about 5 blue books throughout the whole semester. very funny and down to earth
The best math professor at PCC. He is incredible knowledgeable and also great lecturer, explains everything clearly and prepares you well for the tests, which are pretty challenging. Overall he is a great professor and would recommend him to any college student whose major requires a vast knowledge of math
If he isn't the best professor at PCC then I don't know what he is. Awesome sense of humor, and his teaching style will make you understand and love math. Very clear and best of all, when he lectures, he does more that just showing how to solve a problem, he tells you why you have to do what you have to do to the problems.
As I was writing. During lectures you will find that he goes into details and explains the math concepts in such details that you will have an idea of what you are solving for, thus making it easy to solve problems from homework and exams. If you take his class, you will thank God did.
I love him! He is definitely the best Math Professor I've had in PCC! A very nice and humorous teacher with a superior teaching style! Explains everything crystal clear. Very reachable through email and after class. No drop tests, but as long as you study his review questions and groupwork problem you are in safe hands. Take him!
I took him during summer. He is definitely one of the best Math Professor that I've ever had in PCC. His lectures are very good and you will find that he goes into details which will make you feel easy to solve problems from homework and exams. There are 5 exams and no drop the lowest one. Review before each exam.Take him and you will not regret.
He is really good, but I don't think he is the best. He didn't even change some of the test problems, a lot of my classmates had his previous exams, so they just memorized the answers. Sometimes he was late for class. However he is knowledgeable and willing to help you if you go to his office hours. Got 2 A's. :)
Took his mathpaths for 2 semesters. Dr.Socratesis really a GREAT professor. I truly recommend him for Math 5A,5B,and 5C, for which I received my A's :) NOT an easy A though I must say. He really knows what he's doing, helpful, and makes you understand and learn the material clearly. Work consistently and you will get what you deserve :)
Dr.J is great. He is very clear and precise. If you have trouble, go see him in his office hours. Calculus is a hard subject but he is one of the best teachers that you can take. He's a more than fair grader, so if that not enough to get you to take his class then give up.
Good teacher but tests are brutal. No credit for tons of hmwk and you must do it to keep your test score. No extra credit. Test = 1pg of writing definitions, nasty proofs, and the longest problems to calculate. Every test seems like a final. Nobody gets 100% test scores. No answers for proofs in hmwk so you guess. A students get B's. Don't risk it!
Fantastic professor. Although his exams are quite difficult, he definitely prepares you well enough to pass them well (with the assumption that you also study hard). He's charming, enthusiastic, friendly, and understanding. Best math professor I've ever had. I wish he could teach every class I take here at PCC.
Best math professor I had at PCC. I had him for math path. He is a genius. I loved his teaching style. Even thou it is very fast paced, he was very clear and organized with his explanations. He is reasonable, lenient, and easy going!
Great teacher and does not grade too harshly. Very clear in lectures and straight forward. Gets right into what is important in calculus and doesn't really go off on tangents. Tests are hard but if you do the homework you should be prepared.
I personally think this prof is over-hyped. He's a good lecturer but I think people exaggerated. There are other profs whose teaching style is similar to him and/or is hard as him so to make you learn. However, I think the hype applies more for 10. He wrote the book, 10 is known as his "baby," so he's great for 10. Overall, great prof.
Great professor, but it is a lot of work if you want to get an A. He assigns a ton of problems from the Math 10 book (because he wrote it) and his tests are very difficult and must be completed quickly if you want to finish it on time. This is NOT an easy class.
One of the GREATEST math professor's at PCC. Dr. Socrates is truly passionate about his job, and this makes you want to learn. He has office hours everyday, except for Wednesdays, and is very helpful! I recommend him to anyone who has a passion for Math. One last note, he wrote the book for the course :D
More emphasis on proofs and definitions, and a heavier homework load than many students are probably used to. That said, his lectures are very clear and well taught. Likely one of the best math profs at PCC. Tests are difficult, with barely enough time to finish, but his grading is relatively lenient. Study well!
Mathematical authority at Pasadena City College. 5A: excellent; could not ask for more. 5B: tedious and relatively challenging exams... it was rough. 5C: Due to the nature of the class, we ran out of time to completely cover everything on the curriculum. I wish the last part of the course was more emphasized. 10: must take as any STEM major.
This isn't your typical math course. It can be demanding but Dr. Socrates lectures are engaging, funny and clear. I would highly recommend taking this course if you are serious about learning math. Did I mention serious?
Not as that hard as what I heard from other people. The only thing is you gotta do a lot of homeworks. Even though hw doesn't count points, if you finish them you will pretty much Ace the tests. His class is not a measure of how smart you are, but how much effort you put into the class. Willing to study and do homework, A is guaranteed. Recommend
My advice is don't even try to take his class if you are math genius! He is hard and I don't think he is very clear in the lecture. Focus too much on the tedious and hard proof which I don't think is helpful in many ways. 1 hour exam and Most of the class don't even have time do. Barely got an A during summer but I have to drop all other classes.
Prof Socrates is a very knowledgeable professor and he knows the stuff! His tests are hard and long. And you would expect taking time doing homework! Pay attention in group works and the questions mentioned in review day, you can do well on test! He is a great professor and study in groups will be helpful for taking this class.
This professor is the best professor I have ever had in PCC. He does not give many tests to you, and you do not have to do all the homework. He gives extra credit if you do the homework, and he will give you a lot of chances to do the extra credits! Moreover, professor Socrates is a Caltech guy! He is so smart and very nice guy!
He very easy teacher! I take this class and miss class half of the time, and still get A in the class. Just do most homework he will select test questions from the homework, and just change some numbers. Do not miss this opportunity friends!
Socrates is one of the best professors I've ever had. He sets you up to succeed and will get you excited about math. He gives partial credit and gives a clear review of what will be on every test. He has his own homework assignments which help you understand the subject better than you would if you just did the book homework. Easy A and fun class.
I love Socrates! Hes willing to go into depth when explaining material. He also makes pretty funny jokes during lecture, so that's a plus. Requires you attempt most of the homework. Gives partial credit. 5 exams total and a final. His problems are pretty challenging, but tests are similar to homework, so practice his worksheets and youll be fine.
I took this class during the Summer and it was challenging. Passing the class is possible as long as you study and ask questions. He explains his lessons thoroughly and if you don't understand he will try his best to get you to understand the problem. The tests are based on the things you learn in class so it's not a surprise. Make sure to study.
He knows his thing, and he explains very, very well. He's nice and really does care about his students. Exams are not very easy, but he gives you review problems that are similar to whats going to appear on the tests. Textbook written by himself! TAKE HIM. I've had many good professors, BUT HE'S HANDS DOWN THE BEST. Wish I'd taken him all the way.
Took him for math path, but dropped 5B since it was difficult. As long as you understand the homework (especially the hard problems), you should do well on the tests. Other than taking notes, there is group work and a review day. Take him if you're actually interested in calculus and the concepts.
He is an amazing teacher and by far the best Math 10 teacher at PCC. He wrote the textbook and he loves to teach Linear Algebra. The homework (Honors set in particular) can be challenging, but he is always there to help. He is also very lenient with grading and tells you which problems will be on the test.
He is always there to help you, so don't be shy. I took math10 in winter semester, and it was a little bit rush, so I planned to power on your brain. It went well so far. He usually don't give extra credit to students, but since there is a valentine day in winter, and he accidentally included a #for next test. It became our valentine's gift. DO IT
I took Socrates' Math 10 in Winter 2017. It was an intense 6 weeks. He is a knowledgeable professor and very approachable. His grade allocation were 5 exams-60%, groupwork -10%, and a final-30%. The way to succeed in his class is through the reading. Pay special attention to the review problems before the exams; the questions are nearly identical.
Took math path of 5A 5B 5C and 10 with Socrates and got 4 A. Math is not easy for most of us but I have to say he is the best !!!!! Professor always explain everything very well and make sure you understand the concepts. Hope I can take 55 with him but he doesn't teach it...... Take him, put efforts into it and you will not regret!
Socrates makes you work for your grade. He makes his own homework questions but at least it's similar to the test questions. On tests you can get full credit as long as you do all the steps correctly. His HW really makes you think about what you've learned. At the end of the day you'll actually feel like you've learned something.
A good professor that will teach you the material however you must do the hw he assigns if you want to do well. Tests are pretty much hw questions. Not that hard of a class. Understanding is key for a class like this. Grade is based on group work and tests. Does offer little EC, but do not rely on it
You will learn a lot in his class. Homework does not count for grades, but you ought to finish it to do well in exams. This class is not as easy as 5A and 5B, but this professor is fantastic!!! Take him!!!
Good professor. Pay attention and do the homework and you'll easily get an A.
Lectures are very clear. Very willing to help (in and out of class), makes sure you understand what he's talking about; genuinely cares. Lets you know which hw questions to review for exams. Just overall awesome.
5C is not easy, but not as hard as 5B. Socrates made it easy to understand concepts for the tests. Questions on the tests are very similar to the group work and the homework, so if you do the homework, you will be fine. Even though he doesn't give a grade for the homework, you should still do it because he does collected it after each test.
Lectures are really interesting, and tests correspond to what is on the review/homework.
Hes by far the best math professor at PCC! Lectures are very clear. He rarely makes mistakes, knows exactly what hes doing (not a lot of professors actually know!), and can teach in a way that its easy to understand. Hes very organized, smart, and caring. A lenient and fast grader. He gives out study guides before tests and tests were like hw.
His lectures and hw are very organized and fit together perfectly. It's so much easier to follow along. He also can be quite the character so class can be more enjoyable. There's in class group work with practice q's for the test. Study guide based off of hw is given before tests and are very good previews for the actual test. One of the best atPCC
Amazing lecture, most caring and knowledgeable professor in the campus. Lectures are clear and easy to follow. Highly recommend Dr. Socrates for any math class. He is the best.
I had Mr. Socrates for his math class long time ago, very kind and makes you think outside the box. Also a guy that cares for students. A very intellectual professor that talks like a nerd and has an accent like Frieza from Dragon Ball Z and Mayuri from Bleach. He taught me how to use the calculator since I am an old fashioned person. Thank you!
One of the most knowledgeable math professor on campus! The Linear Algebra material is hard but he is NOT a tough grader! If you spend your time to read the textbook and pay attention in class, you will learn so much and get an A in his class easily! He does GIVE exact test problem out on exam review before exams! write on the board to earn EC!
He is probably the most knowledgable math professor avil at PCC yet his MATH 10 guys U have been WARNED! If you are not enthusiastic about math, AVOID HIM AT ALL COST! WE ENGINEERING DON T NEED LINEAR! WE SIMPLY DON T CARE This is from someone who had a 4.0 in the honors program.
I have no words to describe how much respect I have for this man. Professor Socrates is an incredibly passionate and knowledgeable person that spends all his time making the class as easy as possible for his students. The tests are identical to the homework (he does assign a ton of hw). Super easy to approach as well!
Hardest course ever, the exams are half proofs, once you fail one of your exam it's nearly impossible to catch up. Also a tons of hw, if you don't do the hw you get 0 on your exam, exams are on avg 2-3 weeks apart and there's only 4 regular exam(60%) and final (30%). I regret so much taking this class, final and exam 4 are only 4 days apart.
Excellent teacher, very responsive and knowledgeable.
The first test's average was 67%. A really difficult subject to understand but at least he's nice. Took him for Spring. Pros: - kind grader - gives EC - passionate about math - no quizzes Cons: - tests are hard - long mandatory HW (doesn't count for credit) - Gives easy examples but hard test questions Advice: - study group works and Exam reviews
The class is taught through his own "new" textbook($200). He will force you to buy it or you'll fail his class His textbook is essentially a copy and paste of his old textbook. There is minimal communication between student-teacher. He didn't post exam dates for some exams, never should happen. The 4.8 comes from his personality, not his teaching
Professor Socrates is a very well organized teacher. He's very nice and he's a Math Wizard. Stay on top of lectures and go review what you learned later that day. His tests are tricky but hey, we are STEM majors, this isn't some elementary algebra class. Work hard and go to the tutors. Im taking him in the spring for Math 10A.
Be prepared to complete a ton of homework which technically doesn't count for your grade but then again you fail the test if you don't turn in the homework by the next class. The tests are basically exact copies of like 10 hw questions which is really nice. Super accommodating and responds to emails quickly.
Professor Socrates is great! He will definitely make you work for your grade, but you'll get a good understanding of the material if you take his class. Grade is mostly made up of 4 tests and the final, but proof questions on tests are usually straight from the homework. He does assign a lot of homework, which is sorta annoying. Amazing professor!
Professor Socrates is a wonderful professor. I took him for calc 3 and then math 10. He is a very understanding professor and will work with you no matter what objects are in your way. He does have homework that is due normally on the test days, and gives a 24 hr grace period for submitting. Work hard and practice and you should have no troubles.
Every week, there is an assignment or two one should do from his PDF file "Multivariable Calculus". He also teaches students how to make 3D solids using Geogebra. Exams take a long time to complete, so my final grade ended up being a C. Other than that, the Geogebra assignments are awesome! So, I recommend math students to take MATH 005C with him.
He is one of the good professor in PCC. He had a lot of knowledge on Math. His online lecture is so interesting. He is amazing. But ,his class have a lot of work. If you are able to finish the given work in time, then you would be fine for exam and midterm. Getting easy A is not easy in his class. But, you would learn a lot!!
Be ready to do a ton of homework which does count for points. He can help you with any of your questions if you reach out to him. Exam are tough and need to practice a lot but he is the best professor I have ever take in PCC! Also you need to do group assignments every week! Not easy to get A but you will understand everything from courses!
This is one of the hardest classes that I have ever taken. His difficulties should be 5/5 instead of 3.4. It likes taking an honor class. Maybe honor class will be easier. . 4exams + final but you can replace one of the lowest points with the final.
He is a good professor, easy understanding.but his exam need a lot of time do it.If u want get A,this is not easy. There are a lot of calculations.
Professor Socrates is a great teacher and really understanding of his students. His lectures are honestly easy to follow and he tries his best to make sure everybody understands them. This class is time consuming and will require you to put in a decent amount of effort for a good grade. Overall, he is a great professor.
Patient and willing to answer all student questions. Very fair grader. Lectures were all online videos with class time focused on completing assignments. Tests are mostly aligned with the lectures with the occasional question that requires textbook reading. Shows obvious care and dedication towards teaching.
His 5B class feels like 12 units by itself. I can't understate how much homework there is, you will probably get RSI. His exams are VERY difficult, other profs are in awe of the problems he comes up with. He's a very kind and funny dude. He grades very leniently, pushes you to your limit and then some, so don't be afraid when you stumble.
Prof. Socrates teaches in a flipped classroom, where you watch his recorded lectures online, work on assignments in class and ask questions. There is groupwork, review problems, and extra credit offered before every test. Overall, Socrates is a talented professor(even wrote his own textbook for the class)and I recommend you take a course with him.
It was really hard over the summer but I learned a lot. He's one of the smartest people I've ever met so ask him lots of questions. Tests were really hard but he grades leniently. Make sure you do the extra credit before the tests.
Socrates is a very smart professor. He expects you to be an equally smart student. Dude walked right out of Caltech and his exams feel like his preparing you for their graduate program. He's organized, so study every bit of his material and you'll do fine.
Very light GRADED homework (1-2 problems/day) for summer course. Other problems are optional (do them for the test). Lectures posted online, class time used to complete homework. Tests include linear alg proofs, but everything is reflected in the discussion reviews or group problem sets before the test.
I love this professor so much! The best Math professor ever! Highly recommended!
THE GOAT!!!Gave really great feedback on work and class such an enjoyable experience. He does give a TON of homework for no credit. My tips are 1) Do the homework, absolutely essential 2) Do the Extra Credit, super easy 3) His Extra Credit questions are almost exact copies of test questions, review them!! Demanding class, but I have no complaints.
Cons: flipped class, watch 1-2 lecture videos at home (about 30-60 min), come to class and do hw, NO LIVE LECTURES. he does notes and teaches using geogebra so its hard to visualize and understand his work. LOTS of hw. i felt like i had to teach myself everything. i feel scammed because the reviews were promising but it was a traumatic experience.
Pros: Writes his own textbook. Lectures are honestly kind of cute. Caring, kind, and intelligent. One of the best professors, but definitely not an easy one. Cons: Flipped class (lectures online work in person, the opposite of what it should be imo) Lots of hw. Difficult exams but partial credit and hw help a lot.
I must say Calc 5B was intense. I didn't have the best start from my 5A prof, but Socrates PUSHED me throughout the entire semester. He's good, really good. In fact he's so good that sometimes I think he's TOO good. Very challenging & I basically struggled throughout the semester, but I learned a lot. He has all my respect, just be prepared for it.
easy exam
Kind teacher, don't be afraid to ask questions, his test questions are more difficult than the homework and instructional videos, but he is not a hard grader, his teaching is all on youtube, he will not teach in class only give you homework tutorials. The most you can get in his class is about 3% extra credit, which is a lot.
kind professor. However, his class is not easy at all.. More than half of the students dropped the class. HW does not give u any credits but u still have to do it. Tests are really really difficult Don't take this class if you want to pass.. at least if you want to challenge you math skills.
If taking this class, do all the optional test review assignments and turn in HW assignments on time. I would recommend you go over Calc 1 and trig if you're not strong in them because his tests aren't easy and you need to know those fundamentals for this class. You will have to work for your grade but the pay-off will be worth it in the end.
Easy A. If you want to get A, take professor Socrates.
He is undoubtedly the epitome of an exceptional professor, surpassing all others in my mind. His mastery of subject matter is unparalleled, demonstrating an extraordinary approach to elucidating concepts. Moreover, his compassion shines through, as he consistently extends his support to students.
Caring professor, his summer session calculus is hard but doable. Do ALL his review problems, go thru your classmates solutions to the reciew questions to pick up algebra tricks, then easy A.
Good teacher. Class was in a hybrid format so video lectures, class was for working on hw. It was graded on hw and about 4 tests and a final. Probably the hardest class I ever took, but I managed an A from doing all the homework and getting Bs on the tests (A on the final). Always available to answer questions during class or office hours.
Lectures aren't very clear and I had to watch videos outside of class to understand concepts.
You are being scammed by these reviews. If you want to fail this subject, take this professor. He does not teach at all and you have to rely solely on lecture videos from Youtube. There is a TON of homework and he just loves Geogebra when he doesn't even explain how to use the site. Avoid at all costs! I promise you this class is literal torture.
Super kind professor. You can tell he genuinely cares about his work and students. Gives review questions as extra credit and it helps A LOT. Uses geogebra to teach which may sometimes be confusing. Weekly groupworks that give u an easy A. Overall would take again.
Got a B+ on his 5A and got a A on his 5B. He is tough. From what I have heard, he is one of the toughest professors at PCC math department. Take him if u want to learn.
Best mathematics professor in the PCC.
Please take his class and talk with him about math if you love math, he is a fountain of wisdom. He is involved in constructing for student a rigorous fundamental axiomatically to tackle advanced topics.
Prof. Socrates is the goat. He's passionate about the material and it shows. Do all the work and ask questions when needed.
If you really want to learn calculus take it with him he really demands a lot of foundational understanding to do well in this course.
If you want to learn calculus, take it with you. He demands a lot of foundational understanding to do well in this course. Hence, what the previous student said. I took Professor Socrates last year in the summer. It shows if you have the fundamentals and want to improve, always go up to him and ask just for clarification. He will assist.
If you have questions about something that he mentions but he wasnt clear enough he will either ask you if you read the book or if you watched the videos. His test are excesively hard and the only way to succeed in his class is if you have the time he demmands. Take him if you want to learn but don't take him if you are busy and want the grade.
Prof Socrates is the best math professor I have ever had. He truly cares about his students and wants them to learn, and he's always ready to help if you need it. His class was very tough and definitely not an easy A, but if you want to really learn, take his class. He is pretty generous with grading and extra credit, and overall a great professor.
Hybrid course, there is only one in-person class per week. The exams are difficult and you need to spend a lot of time reviewing for the exams. At least half of the students in the class can't finish all the questions every time. But he is a very good grader.
If you want fall or drop class then you choose this guy. You will waste your time. Hardest test I never see. He made own book and so difficult to understand!
50% = exams, 30% = final which also replaces lowest exam. I consistently got 85+ on all exams. Assumed I was in a good position for an A. The final mulated me. I haven't been the same since that day. Good luck. Take him if your interested in math, ready work hard, lots of word problems. doesn't spoon feed integrations, expects you to craft them.
I took 5B as online Asynch. He gave solid resources to study for tests like review problem, but I literally had to self-learn Calc 2 with his e-book or online resources. Very time consuming. I suggest taking every EC opportunity given to you. My hw grade would've been a 97 without the EC, but with EC it was 106.25. his lecture vids aren't good tho.
It was an hybrid course for me, so he doesn't lecture AT ALL, but his videos are helpful, at least for his homework. If you are taking this course, definitely watch his videos. Tests are hard as what everyone says.
Took his hybrid class for 5B. His lectures are all online and you only do hw during class, he doesn't lecture at all. Generous with points on tests and gives ec opportunities but tests are very hard like everyone says. His online textbook has a lot of mistakes and I had to teach myself everything. His video lectures were also quite unhelpful.
4 Tests and 1 Final. Tests worth 50% Final Worth 30%. Attendance is pointless since you are given videos to learn from at home, videos were not that high quality.
Taking his class is like doing 2 tours in Vietnam, with an integral shoved so far up your donkey you could see it coming out of your mouth. While he is in the trees shooting an almost endless amount of homework at you. With all due respect I feel like that I have more PTSD than actual Vietnam vets. Who is going to pay for my therapy?
He's nice but his tests are really hard. I dropped after the first couple of tests. Take him if you don't mind working super hard! Very caring and nice.
Super easy. i'll pay for the guy's therapy
Grades you like you slimed his husband
I have been trying so hard all semester, doing just about the average, and no test average went above a D. And Ms. decides to give me a 54 for my last test. You can't be kidding me. Worst decision I've ever made, If I could give a 0 I would, Please do not take her. I have no respect for her.
Had the Prof last semester, honestly it was a crappy experience, paid money to self learn and fail. His book and lecture videos both suck. He doesn't understand being good at Math does not make you a good instructor. This class is the single biggest hit to my confidence and self esteem I've ever had in my academic career. Highly do not recommend.
ts pmo 🥀🥀🥀
Expected to self-study the whole course from his videos and given the hardest and complicated questions. He's not very helpful if you ask him questions and sometimes is not willing to help. Being good at math ≠ good at teaching, worst explainer I've had. Each HW questions take HOURS to complete, he writes them himself so the numbers aren't nice.
It's surprising he's rated only 3.5/5 on difficulty yet the on campus consensus is that he's by far the hardest math instructor. His test problems are definitely harder than other professors but he is very lenient with grading. If you have an abundance of time and want to be challenged, take his course, but be warned it will be truly difficult.
I would say Socrates is definitely caring and kind. And yes, his tests are hard, but he grades you soft on the final, you would have to try a bit to get an A, but B is easy. Definitely recommended, you can learn a lot.
He tells us to watch his pre-made YouTube videos during lecture time. Lectures are long and bad, especially the GeoGebra part. Homework are super long and the geogebra part is stupid. Exams and Final are super long and has a lot of questions. Make us do stupid algebra calculations that take 2 pages for one problem.
Socrates uses his own textbook (which is very hard to read) and expects his students to watch his pre-made lecture videos off youtube. Thankfully, although his tests are very difficult, he grades with a lot of tolerance and oftentimes you will pass the test without getting any questions correct. For the love of god don't use his textbook.
He wrote his own textbook and his pre-recorded lecture videos are literally so thorough and clear. I took his class years ago but I realized I never wrote my review! It was just so easy to understand the steps of how to solve each problem. I felt well-prepared from his lectures and textbook, did not feel lost. The best math professor I've ever had.
One of the best and most passionate math professors I've ever had. The online recordings follow the textbook and are generally easy to follow. The recordings are pretty long, but they prepare you for the test (make sure to do a lot of the practice problems). Overall, he's a very sweet professor and he really knows his stuff!
He sits in class while we watch his pre-madeYouTube videos in our devices in class while he sits at desk and does nothing. Explanations are long.
Tell me why I am going to a class just to watch pre-recorded lectures, like, there are chalkboards all over the room and a huge whiteboard you can use, bro
Class time is basically independent study, all lectures r on youtube. When u ask questions he's always very nice while explaining things even if you ask dumb questions. Only 2 hw assignments per week with 1-3 questions each. Rlly nice grader on tests. I've gotten more than half the problems wrong and still ended up getting A's & B's on tests.
Socrates puts on his headphones on in class and plays with his computer at his desk while you watch his long prerecorded videos in class on your own device: He gets annoyed if asked questions that may seem trivial to him. Protect your GPA and save yourself from long long tests with parts a, b, c, ….h.
video lectures and textbook are not very good. he makes you do a bunch of geogebra graphing nonsense and 2 page algebra calculations for one integral. wouldnt reccomend his class if youre taking other stem courses too. nice guy but i dont think the amount of suffering was worth the grade i got compared to others' experience in calc 3
I thought I had signed up for an independent study class here and o couldn't get out of it because the other classes were full. Do not risk your grade on his good graces or inconsistent leniency. If most don't finish the test and most don't do well on tests then something is wrong with ……
