a spiteful women who takes out frustrations out on her students

WHY is she the head of the department? She's an awful teacher who attempts to make herself feel better by belittling her students.
This lady has no clue what is going on. Like the previous comments said.. she is very rude and likes to make students feel stupid to make herself feel better!
If they paid professors by their attitude instead of their academics, she would not be here...and we would be very greatful.
I dreaded her class. She turned me off of Philosophy too.
There are better choices in the department.
Totally turned me off to the field. I am now going to become a medical tech.
Very bad representitive of the department and the field.

CAn't stand her, and five gallons of makeup and she still makes me want to gouge out my eyes
She deserves credit for changing my major from Philosophy to Sociology.
She sure is not in it for the fun of it!
Very tough course-work and a ton of Hwk. She is not very relaxed when it comes to deadlines.
You come to the table hoping to be fed and she gives you bread and water.
We tend to think that she is experimenting on us and how much pain and humiliation we can take before we go bonkers.
The Diva of the Philosophy Department.
Makes a decent class better by her presence.
very stright-forward, no-nonsense type of instructor.
Decent speaker, hard but fair grader, very clear assignements and format of course.
In her own little world.
I would rather shot myself in the kneecaps than ever sit under her instruction again. Her class was hard because she was so spacey and made no sense. I can not see how she is still teaching!
She is very critical of lazy students, but if you make the effort she will back you 100%. A lot of students don't like her because she makes them responsible for their actions.
Very intelligent but flawed teacher.
A better asvisor than teacher.
I loved talking about her writing philosophy during her office hrs.
Great point of view that is sometimes over the head of less than avarage students. She is very helpful w/ suggestions if you visit her in office hrs.
Does not take "I don't know" for an answer. Very helpful and full of ideas on improvement of study habits and techniques.
Took the time (many office visits) to really make some sense of the course for me. The class was difficult, but it made sense in the end.
Very interesting and dynamic course. Very difficult at first, but she was very responsive to my needs and issues.
A very caring and totally professional educator. Some students resent her for her rigor though.
I found this course to be a pretty good introductory course in my Philosophy minor.
Avoid this teacher at all costs! She is heavily influenced by Star Trek. Teaches ethics of Star Trek, cool idea but poor reality. Her ethics come from a fantasy T.V. show. Has been known to insult and embarrass students in class.
I had an fun time in both of them. If you are self-starter, this is the instructor for you. She was very helpful on visits to her office.
Good teacher. Does not teach to the test, which upsets some students who expect a free ride.
Clearly head and shoulders above most profs in her department. She wants the best from you and well not tolerate slackers.
I had an ok time in her course. I passed and she helped me from time to time.
I loved this class. Mrs. Barad was very meticulous but very helpful and funny.
Teacher is very arrogant.
Worst teacher I have ever had.
I honestly can't see how someone would think Ms. Barad a good prof. She gets lost in her own philosophical principles most of the time. She is absolutely one of the worst profs I have ever seen. There are students in Phil 105 who know more about philosophy than she does.
She is the worst teacher I have had in college, and is rude and unclear in her teaching. She is degrades students often and is rude when they ask questions.
This teacher needs to find a job she can do. She is always getting lost in her own prattle and she contradicts herself frequently because of it. Avoid her class.
awful class...prof is extremely harsh in grading papers, I know several A students who ended up with c's. Stay away from this one!
she is bad, period!!!
she is rude. she has definite favorites & doesn't care to hide it. she seems to have no clue what she is doing 99.9% of the time. and she is plain annoying. but when i had her, she was in a rascal and let people take it for rides. (p.s. she broke her foot while camping... because she wore her infamous 3"wedge heels!) still want to take her class?
Horrible, awful woman who holds semester grudges.
Seems like a sweet woman but grades unpredictably. She is frustrated when we don't participate but makes those who do feel stupid. I often regret speaking up, but she is generous with her time and extra credit. I will avoid philosophy in the future.
Ok, she is the worst Professor I have ever had. She is not helpful, she likes to make fun of people in front of the class. She seems like the sixties were really hard on her. She is also extremely rude.
For any one thinking of takeing one of her classes stop. Her gradeing is all over the place. She makes favorites and holds grudges. She offers little to no help when asked.
She is the worst teacher i have had in my college career. I wrote many extra credit papers and she gave me no credit at all. She is bais to foriegn students. I had perfect attendence and I have done all my work, and she still gave me a D. According to her syllabus i should have gotten either a C+ or B, but she doen't follow her grading policy at all. Don't take her class. I promise u would regret it.
How is she still a professor. She can't teach at all. All she does is make fun of the students in class. She likes when people fail, it makes her feel good about it. Its a boring class and she does not make sense at all. Her quizes are hard and she grades hard on research papers.
I am one who tries real hard to get a good grade in any class. This professor made school hell for me. You'll regret taking a class with her.
This class is the most difficult 100 level course I have taken, and this PROF does not help. She will never explain anything more than once, don't even ask. She relies heavily on her aides. Her tests don't make any sense, which for a logic class is kind of ironic. Don't waste your time taking her class, you will regret it.
I would strongly recommend finding another professor if you're interested in taking this class. Dr. Barad (and you better not even THINK of addressing her as otherwise!) is one of the worst professors I have ever had. Her grading scale is totally whacked. She makes you feel stupid for asking questions that she deems unimportant, or she'll just paw
She is the worst professor I have ever had. She will often make you feel stupid if you give your opinion and she doesn't agree with it. She makes it so you don't want to talk. The reading makes no sense whatsoever. Stay far away from this class.
Dr. Barad is a terrible prof. I dreaded going to her class. She makes fun of students in her class and doesn't follow her set grading scale. Known as "Elvira" through the department and deserves it. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. YOU WILL WANT TO SHOOT YOURSELF IN THE FACE. I PROMISE.
I have always been interested in the study of Philosophy. However, this class was a total turn-off. I dreaded going. She is a horrible teacher. She cannot keep the students' attention. She commonly makes students feel stupid when presenting a logical argument she doesn't agree with. She violates the very logical fallacies she teaches. Avoid Barad.
She is horrible. Bottom line. I wish I could drop this class right now, but I can't. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. DO NOT. DO NOT.
When me and my room mate decided to take this class we looked her up on this website and decided to chance it even though she had bad reviews. After taking the class I will advise anyone that I come in contact with TO NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS EVER! You may think that you can handle it but it is honestly impossible.Sum it up: terrible person/professor
I have never disliked a class as much as I have this class. Judith Barad is the rudest self centered person that does not care about the students. I turned in my final paper early to get feed back on it so I could correct it and the only thing I got in response was that "you have no idea what this paper is about, so redo all of it." Terrible
Terrible, Terrible professor. Takes any opportunity to point out the fact that she has a Ph.D to show her superiority. Demands several papers but stifles creativity by telling you EXACTLY how to write them. I looked forward to taking this class but I really, really wish I had read the reviews beforehand.
Turned a great course subject with good readings into the worst class I have ever taken. Easy A if you realize that you need to express her opinions in the response papers in order to get a good grade (my papers at odds with her opinions got C's while the others got A's). She is the reason I am not getting a minor in philosophy.
I think Judith Barad is a great prof. I've read some of the other reviews about her being self centered, but I did not get this from her. She can be a little unclear, but is available during office hours to answer any questions.
Rude and belittles students while in class. Part of the grade is based on participation, but if you ask a question she will embarrass you because you don't understand it, so I refuse to ask questions. Asked for help on a midterm paper since I didn't have the "correct" example she wanted, and she couldn't give me an example when I asked for one.
I already have 3 degrees and am currently working on my fourth so I have had several teachers and I can assure you that Dr. Barad is hands down the worst instructer I have ever had. She is rude and self pioused to the extent that her unprofessionalism is giving ISU a black eye.
extremely rude and harsh towards students that do not agree with her views. She should not be teaching PERIOD!
She dosen't listen to any other view out side of her own. She blatantly rejects reality at times. She dosen't know what a DVD is and is probably against all technology because when the class asked he to use blackboard so we could know what the papers subjects where she argued the whole class and said we were stupid. Ruined a good class.
Super rude. I requested the class myself and am really wishing I hadn't. I'm taking an ethics class for her, yet she refuses to listen to anyone elses views(UNETHICAL). If you don't understand something, she speaks to you as if your ignorant. Or if she asks a question and you give a different answer than what she was looking for she does the same.
Dr. Barad is easily the worst professor that I have ever had. I was rather interested in the subject matter, so I took the class and I hated every minute of it. I would never take another class with her, I would rather take a class online through a different school if I really needed a philosophy credit.
She is really an outstanding professor. Those who do not like her are angry because they don't read the syllabus or miss class and then expect her to go out of her way for them. She gives a ridiculous amount of extra credit, and my grade would be like A+++. Very easy class. Warning: she is a Christian, so if you don't like Christians, keep away.
I got a low grade on my first paper so I went into her office to talk about it. I caught her on two mistakes she made and she told me she didn't think it would help my grade any. I thought this was very unfair. I also wanted to know what grade I would have to get on each paper to pass but she refused to help me. I ended up dropping the class.
Coming into the semester I had a 3.95 gpa. This is the hardest prof. to please I have ever had; I should have dropped this class when I could. I graduate next semester, and could have had a Summa Cum Laude diploma, but I will probably receive a C in this class. As others have stated, she is RUDE, NARROW-MINDED, AND SELF-CENTERED.
She requested everyone try meditation in class, which I found to be a bit ironic from a woman so against pushing religious beliefs/practices upon others. No student suggested that her position as our professor pressured students to participate in the meditation which is a part of her religious practice (which appeared to Buddhist, not Christian).
She's a horrible teacher, if you can get by without taking her classes, you should do so.
Class is relatively easy if you have decent writing skills and do exactly what she asks of you. But unfortunately she comes off as highly opinionated to people and often embarasses students(not intentionally, just call them out on incorrect philosophical logic). Take notes on what she says in class for the quizzes and do readings ahead of time!
Dr. Barad is open minded to different opinions as long as those opinions use logic and are well thought out. You can't skip reading in this class, and you need to pay attention to class discussion. Grades are all based on papers, there aren't any tests, which is great for poor test takers.
SHE IS DEVOTED TO THE STUDENTS THAT GET GOOD GRADES IN HER CLASS AND DO EVERYTHING SHE SAYS IN THE COURSE BOOK THERE ARE THREE EXTRA CREDIT PAPER OPPORTUNITIES THAT CAN RAISE YOU GRADE BY 2 LETTERS, 14 QUIZES SHE DROPS THE LOWEST 2 QUIZ GRADES AND A MID TERM PAPER THAT IS WORTH 20% OF YOUR GRADE AND A FINAL PAPER WORTH 28% OF YOUR GRADE. READ AHEAD
Worst teacher I have ever had! If you want to understand material, she is not the professor to have!
Not a good teacher at all. Basically just gave study guides and we were on our own. I strongly advise you do not take this course. Even my adviser agreed with me when I talked to her about dropping the course.
Do NOT take this class. She is the worst teacher to ask questions in class she answers always with "you should know it" she is the hardest paper grader I have ever had and she does not care about helping you succeed.
I have had many teachers, and she is the worst. She gives no care to students at all. Her only two responses to your questions are : "You did read the reading" or "Check the syllabubs." Also, 39% of your grade is made up of quizzes you didn't take. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFFESOR!!!
DO NOT take Ethics with DR. Barad. If you try to answer her questions and she doesn't understand what you are trying to say she acts like you're stupid. She talks down to everyone. I understand it's the real world no sugary toppings but this women is just plan rude. So unless you have a tough skin don't take her.
She is very condescending and she wants people to speak in class , but if she doesn't like what they have to say she'll shut them up.
She demands respect. Be on time, do what is asked and you will pass.
She is a useless teacher that is no help in class to the students. She is the kind of person that if what you have to say doesn't agree with what she has to say she doesn't accept it. Hands down, the worst instructor I've ever had.
she is not the type of instructor you want, she makes everyone want to hate eating beef in my animal and ethic class, she is not a GOOD teacher, not helpful and also grade strictly....... ill give her 1 out of 10, not good at all type of teacher.
Midterm paper requirement and community service. No thank you.
I enjoyed her class in spite of disagreeing with her on a number of topics. She was respectful, reasonable, and very clear concerning her expectations regarding assignments and in class participation.
She's not clear with class work, she's very.. "Her way or the highway", you won't pass without the book or the prof pack. I would not recommend this class at all!
Class participation in discussions are required , but it seems she doesn't bother with what you have to say if it is unclear to her and simply moves on to the next person with their hand up. And you have to blow her mind with your comment in order to get points. Bad hand writing and uses the old school projector. I advise using a laptop for notes.
I have not had any issues with professors at ISU besides Dr. Barad. She is so rude to her students. She wants you to "paticipate" but you will never give the answer she is looking for. She basically ignores what you have to say. I DO NOT suggest taking this class with her. Terrible professor.
