she is quite hard. although the material itself is difficult.

speaks her own chemistry language

memorize the lecture notes and text and you'll be fine

she unnecessarily complicates concepts

she was terrible and always did things off the top of her head without explainin
to all those who want to take this course, DON'T!!!!!

BORING!!!!

too fat too stupid and too idiot and broke her leg cuz too fat
Whoever made fun of Poe's injury is immature. She is nice and very helpful.
one of the greatest profs around, she has great stories

You not only made me want to kill myself but taught me how with just a garage and some carbon monoxide
Lectures are a little dry, she knows too much about chemistry to dumb it down for us so we get confused and bad marks!!
She loves chemistry, and has a morbid sense of humour sometimes. So dry, but so funny. The one time I liked a friday lecture.
She's a great teacher, those who didn't pass it, are those who didn't take the time to study the material in the text and out of it.
Prof. Poe was great...she know's what she is talking about and people who pay attention pass the course so slackers beware.
Amazing prof....tests are easy and clear.
Lectures are boring, but don't skip them or you'll be screwed on the exam. Smart woman, but her voice is kinda numbing bc of how monotone it is sometimes. Wicked prof who makes time for her students. There's no one else I'd trust w/a room full ofchemicals
horrible

She gives great notes and answers all questions on VOH. Has a good sense of humor.

Hard course just because its LOTS of info FAST. Impossible to keep up, but keep trying. Don't miss lectures. She's scary at first, but you appreciate her by end of year, she's not so bad.
You'd be hard-pressed to find a more knowledgeable prof. I don't know where I'd be without VOH. Every prof should use it. Very funny professor too. GO TO LECTURE!!
man who still uses overhead.. get in on wuts on.. use powerpt for god sakes.. wut happens if we miss notes.. god.. how can a professor can't even keep up to date wit tech wen she is so smart.. wut if we can't copy taht fast.. at lesat u can use 2 overhead

Very reasonable. Makes you want to fall asleep during lectures, but bring some strong coffee, it's worth it to stay awake. I like her teaching style. Material on tests is straight forward and pertains to things learned in lectures and in the lab.
you just can't hate her, even though she loves to keep her students in fear. she's got excellent dry humour, but that's where it ends. her lectures taught me nothing i needed to get by in her course. the labs were like stress workshops. fear doesn't help.
Hah hah I enjoyed that first comment about the CO. She's a nice lady; however the course material is quite intense and this, combined with the labs and quizes doesn't create a good combination
I wish more professors followed her lead with the Virtual Office Hours. The Bio-Inorganic Chemistry class is quite interesting for those students who continue on past CHM 140.
it's really hard to not let your mind wander off during the lectures with a course like this. but i think she does a decent job in preventing that and gives good examples.
Good prof...made me want to take chem
Not only are the overheads impractical, they're very unclear as well. Many times I'd sit in class writing notes as fast as I could, only to come home and find that they made no sense at all.
A lot of writing from lectures, but only a little time to write them, so hard to concentrate what she's talking about while you also have to concentrate on the overhead to copy down the lecture notes. Although she knows the course materials very well that all the Q's are answered clearly on VOH.
She is a great prof. Yeah, overheads are a little on the old side, but she really is concered about her students. What other prof would bother to have VOH? She trys her best and is effective at teaching. And for those who can't copy fast enough, learn to write faster.
her course...great workload...but i like her...her VOH is awesome!really appreciate the time she puts into it and her answers are very clear and concise...her lectures are pretty useful and she does add humour to it...
she is monotone & goes through equations very quickly. she is, however, very friendly if you approach her with a question regarding chemistry. she will not necessarily give you the answer, but will point you in the right direction.
hmm she doesnt knw wot she teach.. she is too old
Lectures are interest but not pratical. She seems to highly enjoy her own lecture, but i highly doubts the students share the same view. Overall i think i learned more from the tutorial & test book than she ever taught in class.
she is a very good prof.... her lectures are pretty good, her tests aren't that hard... some of those questions on the test come out the homework... if you do your hwk you should not have any problem
The course material I found to be difficult, however Poe taught the material well, and was available and approachable to clarify certain concepts. She was very organized. Not too many people were fond of Poe because her tests were very difficult, however i developed a fondness for her by the end of the semester.

her notes are hard to understand when you go back to review and she doesn't really explain concepts all that well.
Quite honestly, I have a lot of respect for Professor Poe. Aside from being the most articulate person I have ever met to date - which she undoubtedly is, her passion for chemistry transforms that dull course into an exciting class. People are only bitter because their lack of committment earned them a poor mark. She is outstanding.
i'm pretty sure she thinks we're stupid. lol i wish she would either post her lectures online or let us write instead of making us try to write and listen to her at the same time... :(
She's alright, not the greatest but certainly not the worst. I hated my TA more than I hated Poe.
she's a really nice professor but kinda hard. She's funny
Lectures were complicated sometimes. VERY hard to write down all the information on the overheads while listening. Posted lectures may have helped. Supposedly was a very helpful professor if you went to her office hours. Exams was hard but fair.
This course is really hard, and the only way you will do well in it is if you start trying hard at the beginning of the year, I've seen people do badly because they thought that they could cram for the midterms/exams and still do well...that being said Poe explains very well, makes good lecture slides and has a great sense of humor!
This course is very hard. The trick is to keep up with the homework from the very beginning. All of her tests come from her lectures, not the textbook. Overall, she's an extremely nice person and is willing to help you (If you're willing to help yourself, that is!).
clear explanaations, interesting applications, wicked sense of humour
cool prof
my fave prof, hands down. her lectures are organized, neat, and make perfect sense. GO TO HER LECTURES OR YOU WILL FAIL! it's not an easy course, but if you do your work, you'll do fine. her VOH are a life saver. best prof ever...:)
By far the MOST talented proffessor in the WORLD!!! She makes chemistry FUN :D PROFFESSOR POE ROCKS!!!
she's a prof whose really into her course...her VOH are helpful...but the course is VERY VERY VERY HARD...i really hated this course...coz i was gettin such a bad mark in it till the end...it also depends on ur TA who mark ur labs n quizzes...mine was sumone called kravstov and she gave me such awful marks for my labs..WARNING: COURSE IS DIFFICULT!
Good proffessor. Extremely hard!
Poe is surprisingly really cool. She says random things that you wouldn't expect. Funny lady. BUT the course is really difficult. I failed the midterm :|..... oh, but her VOH is the best thing ever. Got all my prelab answers off that thing!
Perhaps the most intelligent woman I have ever met. Extremely talented and passionate about her work and her teaching, she is definitely one of a kind. Great sense of humor, very approachable. The course is hard but if you work at it and go to lectures you can easily do well. Her students are undoubtedly her main priority. A+ for Poe:)
Prof Poe is an excellent Professor who is very fair for people who want to study. She basically helps you a lot in the labs and her tests are somewhat from her lecture notes and the book. She teaches you how to study for university Don't skip lectures and buy old tests since the format doesn't change.
She explains rather well. Her slides are neat and informative. Know your formulas and the first 36 elements of the periodic table for the first term test. The textbook was quite useless. Use the Virtual Office Hours. She is a little difficult to approach and doesn't budge when extra marks are needed.
intelligent, respectable and funny. I honestly look up to her. She's so cute too with her little bun =)
CHM140 was the hardest first year course I had, and Prof. Poe is the best prof I've had in uni. She's by far the clearest prof I've had. If you study, you are guaranteed a good mark. She's extremely helpful. She doesn't give away marks, you have to earn them-- but it's possible to do that. She knows her stuff inside and out. She's greaattt!=)
Shes not that bad
Pretty good prof, has a neat little bun lol. Doesn't use slides and she wants you to memorize derivations about a page long for tests >.< . Labs were good, although our TA had a really strong accent and we got a new one because he got replaced. Sadly, prof's husband died during the course :(. Overall, interesting and sort of triangle-shaped lol.
Not very helpful at all. She honestly can't teach first year... her notes are confusing and the textbook is useless too.
Course is hard, study everyday after lecture it will help. Memorize schroedinger and first 36 elements! Wasn't helpful when it came to answering questions for exams.
This course is pretty hard itself. The tests are all SA, therefore you can't wing anything. Especially memorizing deviations of equations are over A PAGE long. If you did all the readings, attend all the lectures, and study hard, you will get a decent mark. The prof is sometimes humorous, she isn't that bad. Tests can be quite challenging though.
I use to like chemistry in Highschool, but first year chem is terrible. Its really hard, and Poe does not explain things very well. Also, I hate how what we learn is out of order from the textbook...I never know what where working on!
I don't understand why everyone hates on her so much. She is incredibly clear during lecture, and her tests are very fair. Everything on midterms/exams is covered in lecture. And for those of you upset that you have to memorize Schroedinger, that's easy compared to the rest of the course. This woman makes me want to go into chemistry. A+
I don't think it's her fault that the course is so hard. Many of my friends who take chemistry downtown says our chemistry course is at least a year ahead than theirs. I guess one just can't help blaming the prof for a hard course.
i LOVE her... shes the BEST prof ever i wish she can teach me all chem courses... she is sooo funny and soo sweet... she made love chem... easiest prof if u do your work and understand the notes...
Word of Caution: drink loads of coffee before entering the damn lecture... she will make you fall asleep cos her voice is just so monotonous... On the days I managed 2 remain awake she was alright i suppose... kinda intimidating though...
Poe is tough but fair. Her lectures are organized and interesting, and her tests are based on the material she presents in class. She is helpful and wants her students to do well. I'm continuing in chemistry because of her course.
She is kind, and charismatic. Always gave us a sports update after every weekend (like we had time to watch the games ?) But since the course requires us to learn a lot of material she flies through notes in lecture, while we blindly copy. Tests were somewhat fair, but hard nonetheless
She's a really good lecturer. She knows what she's doing. Chemistry is supposed to be hard, and I don't think anyone should blame her. It would be tough regardless of who's teaching the course.
She is an amazing lecturer. I LOVE her so much! She is very clear and knows what she is doing. As long as you work hard, pay attention in class and do the homework/ assignment/lab report, you can get pretty high marks in her class.
her lectures are extremely rehearsed and very easy to follow. she is clearly a dedicated professor, and even goes the extra mile to have "virtual office hours", where even when students abuse it to ask stupid questions, she answers politely - and every single one! her tests are very fair if you do the textbook questions. a truly wonderful prof. :)
she is extremely nice and clear and amazing. easy course because of her explanations. do her qns in the textbook and always go to lectures, they help ALOT! very important!!
too fast to follow, always deviates from textbook
Lectures are extremely important. In order to do well, you need to do textbook readings and lecture notes, they need to blended well. Her tests are hard but she teaches well at the same time, if you do your work, you can do well. You need to be active in class because she skips steps while doing calculations, so make sure you know what she's doing!
She is an amazing professor, very clear and concise. Midterms and exams are very straightforward as long as you attend every lecture and pay attention! Other than her classy humour, best part about her is she LOVES FOOTBALL! haha, love prof poe.
Poe is a really good prof, knows what she's talking about. She seems unapproachable at first but she's really nice and she answers ANY questions u have on this thing called virtual office hours. She can be funny at times and she's really into football. Go to lectures and read the textbook and u will be fine!
Really good prof, know's what she's talking about. The key is to do qq's from the book from day one. Very clear and concise, great sense of humour, and is really helpful. If she can't answer your qq's on VOH, she'll definitely bring the answers to class. She helps a lot with labs. I loved her more than my TA. You can tell she's really passionate.
Poe is a good prof. Chem is hard but that's not her fault. Work hard and you'll do good. Don't do the work and you'll get a grade that reflects it.
Excellent professor, challenges her students and does hard problems in class but usually easier on tests. Great humour and her VOH online question service is wonderful. You gotta work hard but it really pays off and you know your stuff well afterward:)
You teach great! Keep it up!
Not helpful.
She may seem strict and unapproachable at first, but she is a fair professor. She goes over hard examples in lectures(unlike some profs), but she prepares you well for the midterm. Just keep up with your work and you'll do fine!
She is a bit dull to listen to, but is great at explaining concepts. Her problem based learning method of teaching was extremely effective for me. She successfully built my interest in aspects of general chemistry. Her tests are hard, but easy to do well on if you do lots of practice problems from the book
shes an awesome prof, does everything nice and slow and repeats it for the week pretty much so you really get to fully learn it was great having her as a prof just make sure u dont miss class
easy course. this prof is a clone of my high school teacher. i could predict what she was about to say 5 minutes before she said it. both teachers talk about sports. shes dull and i didn't show up too much. take the course its easy.
Amazing professor, has virtual office hours which run 24/7. Her test are extremly fair, and those who rate her poorly did not try hard enough. First year chemistry isnt easy, but Prof Poe makes it as easy as possible without ruining the reputation of the school. If you work hard, you will do well for sure.
-Do old test questions for practice. Keep up w/ homework. Attend lectures as she does not post lecture slides online.
At first she seems like a hard prof. but really her tests/exams are based mostly on her lectures. Make sure to make detailed notes, and its not too bad!
Very hard prof. She makes tests almost randomly. Sometimes I couldn't follow her at all & she was extremely boring. Don't take chem if you don't have to. p.s. she's really old school, which doesn't help with doing well. Nice person however.
She seems strict and hard at first but shes an amazing prof! shes so passionate about what she teaches. she expects you to know alot prior to class but if you don't she will gladly explain. 70 % of her tests are repeated..look for them online, it will help! she's also extremely fair!!
She's a fair professor and all your midterms and exam had the same format. So it was easy to understand her way of grading and testing. It was hard at first but in the end all her test and quizzes were fair. By the end of the year her course became a lot easier. Definitely enjoyed the lectures.
She seems really hard and intimidating at first but she's actually pretty good. Make sure to go to lecture and take careful notes. I found it really helpful to record her lectures and then fill in stuff I missed from her lecture in my notes. Her examples are way more imp. than the long list of questions from the book. Labs are hard though!
She seems really hard at first but she really not! Lecture's are sooo important, take very careful notes as her test questions are mostly from them. I found it very helpful to record her lectures and fill in gaps in my notes that way. Examples in her notes are way more imp. than the pgs of q's in the text. Only thing is that Lab's are hard! got 84
Lecture's are sooo important, take very careful notes as her test questions are mostly from them. I found it very helpful to record her lectures and fill in gaps in my notes that way. Examples in her notes are way more imp. than the pgs of q's in the text. Only thing is that Lab's are hard! got 84
Careful notes are very important. I found it useful to record lectures (via my phone) to fill in the gaps in my notes later as she goes very fast. Her tests are mostly based on the notes and straightfwd and her examples are super important! More so than the tons of q's in the text. She really want's her students. Though her labs are hard!
Professor Poe enjoys what she's teaching which improves the content of what's being taught, but nevertheless both courses are tough. Paying attention in class is the most important part of both courses, however the book is an excellent clarifier. Staying on top of lectures is most important.
Prof Poe sounds as if chemistry is the most boring subject in the world. She speaks in monotone, and races ahead in lectures. This makes it very difficult to follow along. She knows her material obviously, so she expects you to know it beforehand, or you're playing a game of catchup with your notes. She did offer us chances to improve our marks.
i don't like her at all. she made course hard. she doesn't explain well at all. doesn't do steps in problems, leaves you confused all the time. she's very monotone.
She is a good prof in a sense that she knows the material inside and out. However, I found her tests to be difficult in some areas and she would skip lots of steps so looking back at the answer, it could get confusing.
Chemistry follows the formate in math in the sense that through a process of multiple steps a solution is found from the problem. She skips IMPORTANT steps which I thought should be obvious to anyone to explain. She is nice in the sense that she will tell the entire class one question that will for sure be on the test. Overall dislike.
She's a good prof but its a hard course so you really need to stay on top of your work to do well. Her VOH are a life saver. Also TAKE GOOD LECTURE NOTES they will help you more on the midterms and exam than the text book!
The tests seem easy but when test marks come in, it is disappointing
Hard marker, exams are super-hard.
Does not have a good teaching skills I have to teach my self
She's an awesome professor in my opinion. The class avgs are relatively low, not bc she sucks but bc its just a tough course. My best advice after completing the course would be to take advantage of her accessibility, if u don't get something ask right away, not before a test or exam. Youll see once u get solutions to test they're fair, STUDY!!!
She a great prof in the sense that she knows what she talking about and tries to be helpful. She a bad prof in the sense that her lectures were mostly examples , which applied only to certain questions. The course was hard, if one wants to pass, they need to study the material consistently and not cram. Exam was hard, midterms were average.
Midterms and exams are quite easy, just go over past year papers and you'll do well. She's a good teacher, a little monotone but she'll crack jokes once a while. Take good notes and go over her ppt slides when studying. Try to grasp the derivations, rather than memorizing.
do the chem assignment questions she assigns from the book!! get past tests and do them, she repeats lots of the short answers one her derivationsother knick knacks that aren't in th ebook are very important to know
Professor Poë taught as if she knew her subject matter- which after teaching the same course for 15+ years, she should. She spoke in monotone so her class was very very boring to attend, but you have to go for the derivations and side points that always show up on tests. Pay attention to virtual office hours, she always mentions what to study for.
Good Prof
One of the hardest courses at UTM for sure. Poe makes CHM110 exceptionally hard and same goes for CHM120. Ta's marking the assignments, term tests and exams are tough graders. PRACTICE IS ESSENTIAL FOR PASSING. Make sure to do all the practice questions from past tests (she repeats) and do all textbook readings. Labs are a lifesaver.
One of the most helpful profs you will ever meet at UTM. Good at explaining topics, VOH is a life saver, however tests can be a bit ridiculous. DO THE HOMEWORK!!!
By far the worst prof at um. Very hard class. Very monotone, tries to make jokes. Save yourself and take the class with Krish.
PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS & don't miss lectures. The material is hard to grasp, especially if you don't have much of a science background. I succeeded by taking advantage of office hours and working hard during the labs.
She is a bioinorganic chemist, very passionate about it and does a great job at teaching it. I loved this course, she was straight to the point and always helped us understand the research papers for the class. One test and 3 assignments, study hard for the test since its all short answers. Start working on the wikipedia project early in the term.
good luck
Good luck..
I used to love chemistry until this class. Prof Poe is boring, monotone and skips steps. She'll help if you ask but she can be pretty condescending and acts like you should know everything she talks about. She doesn't follow the book examples and expects you to use her methods. Her tests were just terrible, study from past tests, it will help.
She's a very sweet and a kind-hearted person but is very serious and has no mercy when it comes to the class. She does skip over a lot of details when solving questions in her lectures which can throw you off. Her tests are challenging and her marking is not really generous. She knows what she's teaching but she will not dumb things down for you.
Such a sweet prof, but she will kill you and make you cry after midterms.... Tutorials were helpful and labs were pretty fun, though the write up would take forever sometimes!
If you do your homework, go get help and if you don't procrastinate, you will succeed in this course. Don't fall behind because it will bite you in the butt. This isn't high school anymore. You will not be spoon fed. Poe will teach you that. She gives excellent lessons and is entertaining, but she expects you to do your part. Go Bears!
she makes it well aware that chem is not for everyone, mid terms and finals will make you cry, shes not too clear during lectures and its really easy to fall behind, however, she is a great prof and extremely knowledgable, but taking the course with her is harder than the other prof, really easy to fall asleep during her lectures, really monotone
The best.
Looks mean at first, but by far best teacher ever, very kind and has a sense of humour. Go to her office hours she helps a lot. Look at past tests too, as she repeats! I did better with her than I did in high school. She made me love chemistry, and I am glad to have 120 with her currently.
The course in general is difficult but regular revision would be helpful. Office hours and Virtual Office Hours are a great resource.
CHM110 was a challenging course but CHM120 in my opinion was much easier. My recommendation to do well in these courses is to practice as many problems from the textbook, and memorize any derivations that were shown in class. Definitely attend class & take notes, as sometimes additional notes appear in LEC that were not discussed in the textbook.
She is a nice person but the course I feel she made more difficult than it could have been. Sometimes her lectures seemed irrelevant, but she tests for the smallest details. Practice makes perfect for this course!!
Amazing prof so far! Course is not easy but you need to work for your mark!
Poe is a great prof! I never once used the textbook and got a good mark. Focus on her lectures every test question comes EXACTLY from her lectures even the numbers aren't change. SO GO TO LECTURES. Her exam was difficult but she repeats most of her questions and you also get to pick one question you don't have to answer. Goodluck!
Professor Poe was amazing in CHM110, even though I didn't do as well as I had hoped that was due to my own slacking off. If you put in the work and ATTEND LECTURES you will do well. Tests are fair and she gives hints in class about things to know. The textbook is not really helpful in my opinion, especially with simultaneous equations.
Lol worst course ever tbh, waaay too much work for a first year course; seriously take the time for this one and try really hard
Although i didn't really like Chemistry, Professor Poe made me LOVE it!! She's an amazing prof with an awesome sense of humor! She never lets you get bored in class there's always a little joke :)) she's also very nice and gives good lectures! I'd love to have her as my prof in the next years.
super hard. terrible prof. be ready to do A LOT of work and studying
She's so funny. All tests are fair and no surprises on exams. Study past midterms and exams for a good mark. She's very approachable and doesn't talk too fast or anything.
I am not the best at chemistry, so I was very worried about first year chem. Thankfully, shes a great prof. She explains concepts well & is very helpful on VOH if you need clarification. Chemistry aside, POE IS HILARIOUS. Loved her witty jokes, updates on the Chicago bears & Trump. Comedic timing is spot on. Overall, she made chem enjoyable.
you could do the whole course on just attending lectures and re doing the problems, as well as the textbook problems she assigns. You don't need to read the actual text book.
Professor Poe is super approachable and nice. Her examples and explanations in lectures are very clear and actually help you understand course content... Prof Poe is such a jokster, 100% would take have her as my instructor again. Tip: Watch out for labs because some of their content shows up on tests.
Prof Poe was by far the best professor I had first year. If you attend lectures, and read up on the material in a little more depth in the textbook, you will do fine. Midterms were pretty original (not a lot of repeating) but final exam had a few repeats from previous years. Know the shrodinger equation derivation for the final!!
Great and very respectful professor! She teaches all the important things during lectures, so make sure you go to the lectures and take notes. She is a funny lady and makes jokes. The teaching speed is slow which gives you time to think and understand.
this course is useful.
Poë is a sweet professor and a comedy legend really makes attending the lectures worthwhile. Make sure you do attend the lectures because the textbook is overly simplified and NOT useful. I used it maybe two times in the semester. Also she does repeat past questions especially on the exam so use the UTM library exam bank!
good prof. explains material well. midterms and exam questions are difficult. refer to old exams.
Don't skip class because basically all the test questions are from her lectures. Know how to do all of the lecture problems. Professor Poe is funny and goes pretty slow during lectures, she does skip steps during the calculations but she's willing to reexplain if you ask. The exam is all lecture problems/content and lab content.
she's a hard marker, you NEED to stay on top of your work and do many lecture problems over and over. DON'T SLACK AND GO TO LECTURE.
very difficult tests. if you don't attend the lectures you will not pass this course. is very nice and will re explain anything if you ask her. She's hard but I liked her
Prof Poe is the best professor I've had at UTM. Her lectures are very clear and she is willing to clarify any concepts if asked. The textbook isn't very relevant to her tests, so it's best to always go to class. However, this shouldn't be a hassle, as her teaching style is engaging and very easy to follow.
The average was 35% on the first midterm. Her questions are very difficult. Everyone agrees. Try to avoid this prof.
professor poe is one of the most reputable professors in this campus, she has been teaching this course for a quite long time . you may hear horror stories about her, but believe me she is so nice even though she might seem unapproachable. the key for passing this course is attending the lecture, her tests are fair but you gotta study real hard.
For first year courses there's not a lot of wiggle room to actually pick a prof, but do choose a different if you can. The material was tough and she would make us memorize things that I have never used again. I remember memorizing this long formula that i forgot the day after the exam.
One of the best prof I had in first year! Tho her first mid term test was hard!!
Her lectures make me very sleepy
AUDIO RECORD ALL HER LECTURES if it is possible. I found it really hard to hear her most of the time and although she would go through a lot of examples, she would say that the whole calculation is "GARBAGE" because we all just solved it wrong. Then instead of fixing it, she'd whisper under her breath explaining which step was incorrect.
She knows her stuff, and she teaches we'll ask she asks is for you to pay attention. Her pace is nice and slow so you won't miss anything while she speaks. She is very funny once she opens up
shes loveable and makes lots of jokes and very expressive about her love for the Chicago Bears; shes also decently fair when it comes to her tests, just make sure youre prepared for the midterms!!
First year chem is not this hard but she made it hard; I did not like going to her lectures and it almost made me not like chem anymore, for too many reasons to list
The course content is heavy and the final test is really hard compared to midterms. If you don't do the suggested problems, you will not get a good grade.
Great professor with a good sense of humor! Attendance is very mandatory because she teaches a method to solve chemical equilibrium questions that isnt in the textbooks or online. Pay very close attention in lectures because she refuses questions on tests and exams.
Overall she is a very nice prof with profound teaching experience. Although the tasks she assigns is heavy, it is still achievable to get a satisfying mark if you pay attention in class and clearly understand the method she taught to solve the problems, instead of reading textbook at home. Lecture attendance is ESSENTIAL.
I finished this course but don't feel like I learned anything because of how hard it was, and the fact that I couldn't relate it to real life/understand it thoroughly partly mainly due to her teaching.
I took CHM110 with her for the first semester of my first year, and I had no idea what I had gotten myself into, she is just one of a kind! So, her lectures are very important so, take notes, I myself took pretty good notes, and I still did badly in her course, her tests and exams are HARD, and in general the marking scheme is a joke. TRY TO AVOID
Despite what you read on this site, prof poe is great! Make sure you attend her lectures because they're very important. Those who say tests are hard clearly never do practice problems from the textbook. Online office hours are extremely helpful and she's actually really nice during her OHs. She has a lot of knowledge and a great sense of humour.
I firmly believe that CHM110 with Professor Poe is the easiest course on the planet. She takes lecture problems, changes the numbers and puts them on the test. THERES NO EXCUSE to do bad in this course. If you supplement lectures with textbook problems, you should just rain 100s on every assessment. Labs are a joke.
First of all the marking scheme is a joke. Her lectures are choppy for the most part, she will jump from one slide to another without making any sort of connection or application. All of the midterms/exam have questions that are highly unlikely to be solved for full marks within the timeframe. Did I mention the marking scheme is a joke??
This course made me way too stressed out compared to other courses. I even found calculus easier than this!!! I did not know what to expect for the final exam, which made my mark drop by like 10%, despite studying and redoing all lecture questions. She's a tough grader and its hard to get a full mark on her questions. Avoid!!!
She was a very funny and respectable prof in lectures, but her tests were marked extremely harshly. Half of the tests and exam was theory-based, and it's impossible to get full marks on those. If your answer doesn't contain key words she wants, you will get a 0. The labs were super easy, but the midterms and exam really brought my mark down.
makes it hard for no reason. also needs a new method to teach her students. we arent in 1980 anymore
er lecture slides are helpful but when explaining certain equations she does not actually do it with the class, she leaves the solution on the board for students to copy down as she speaks, which sometimes makes it difficult to understand
A really funny prof but her tests and exam are really hard. She does a really good job explaining concepts in her lecture, so never ever skip otherwise you'll really suffer later on.
She's a really good professor. She has a virtual submission form where students can ask questions and she responds very quickly. Very responsive on emails and she cares about her students greatly. She reassured us that everything would be okay straight from the first day. She's tough, but she cares about her students.
The outline of the course was nice, there was a good balance between tests and labs which made it doable to get decent grades that reflected your knowledge. However, the online lectures were dreadful and after a while, I could not bring myself to attend them.
Don't get me wrong, this was a very difficult class, but because of the content its difficult no matter what. I don't know if it's because it was online, but people often asked questions during lectures and she'd take the time to clarify (we actually ran behind because she took a lot of time to clarify). Its a tough course but she genuinely cares.
Hard when you have her in 1st year because of the sharp adjustment to university, she did NOT do any hand holding or provide extra support in CHM110. In upper years, you'll realise that she's actually extremely fair. Teaches pretty well, and tests are reasonable IF you put in the work.
She is hilarious and her office hours are so helpful. I would attend even if I didn't have specific questions. With online lectures I definitely rewatched using 2x speed. Her tests can be difficult, but the most important part is to actually understand the material and be able to apply it in different contexts. Tests being open book never helped me
Professor Poe is such an amazing professor, I indeed enjoyed all her lectures and office hours which I used to attend most of the time even when I didn't have questions. Chemistry in general requires thinking and effort but prof. Poe had us also really think critically and always tried to relate what we're learning to real life applications.
First year general chemistry is not an easy course, and it's easy to blame the instructor for it, but Poe is genuinely a great lecturer and teacher. Make good use of her office hours, pay attention to the concepts in lectures, read the textbook ahead of time (this one is important) and you'll do very well in both 110 and 120.@i
Despite how tough the course is, you'll do well if you attend lectures. Prof Poe is a really good at teaching the subject matter, but the exams are just really difficult, genuinely painful exams and prof poe grades mercilessly. But she does teach very very well though to be fair. Overall, kind prof, decent course and hard exams
Midterms were awful if you didnt write exactly what she was looking for and the questions were harder than anything done in class. She was funny and sweet during lectures though and I would recommend going to office hours for extra help.
One of the most difficult courses I've ever taken at UTM and the prof does not make it any easier. Her teaching style can be summed up as: the girls that get it, get it and the girls that don't, don't ;) No, seriously you either understand her teaching methods (which are very old and mainly just her talking) or you don't and you suffer.
She taught the material very well in CHM333. Her slides are a little empty & they require you to show up to lecs and write down what she says. Her test was very fair but it also marked on small details so make sure you study well for it. The assignments' had a bit of subjective grading. She has so much enthusiasm for the content, highly recommend!
The most challenging professor in UTM. Did the credit/ no credit for this course and retook it with another professor in the Winter. Loved Chemistry before her. Made the lectures monotonous; the TA that I had made everyone seem that we don't know anything because whenever we asked questions during practical, he answered in a condescending manner.
