Prof Hand's AmerSoc class was amazing. She knew how to keep it interesting. She designed the class so that we got a grasp of several different aspects of U.S. Society. Lots of reading, but rewarding if you keep up with it. Exams depend on the reading, but the reading is very interesting. Participation is crucial but you'll want to participate!
Professor Hand is a very nice and easy-going lady. Her class is very easy, but sometimes it gets boring because all you do is discuss the reading (and sometimes she does a brief lecture). I really liked her but started feeling like she was just a facilitating a book club.
SOC 203 American Society. Very interesting material. Do all the readings, study for the four exams- studying with a good partner really worked for me, and do well on quizzes. If you do what Prof. Hand asks and don't anger her with turning work in late, you should have a solid grade. I certainly did. Thank you Dr. Hand!
Professor is funny which makes lectures more engaging. You have to really study to do well in her classes. However, she cares about each student which is something great considering its W&M where there are favorites.
She is a good lecturer, when she does lecture, and is great at facilitating discussion. Her freshman seminar is a lot of work, but she grades assignments leniently. The class was definitely helpful for improving my writing. If you need the writing and freshman seminar requirements fulfilled, I'd recommend this class.
Great professor. LOTS of writing but a lenient grader. She is articulate, passionate, and respectful of others viewpoints. She says she doesn't care what you think of her class/the subject matter, but I think she secretly wants us all to love it. I would recommend this class to anyone with an interest in race/racism, or who just doesn't "get it".
Class material is interesting; you can tell she takes a lot of time to select meaningful pieces. However, I didn't really see why everyone found her humor hilarious because it wasn't. Her syllabus and initial attitude was very off putting, too; unnecessarily strict. Would take this course just for the readings, though! You will learn a lot.
Professor Hand is AMAZING! I absolutely loved every minute of her freshman seminar, Memoirs, Privilege, and Inequality. One of my favorite sociology professors at the college.
Dr. Hand is an interesting and nice professor. However, her seminar has a lot of work. Its almost a paper every 2 weeks. I realize that everyone says this class is easy, but if you are not good at writing... This class hurts. Personally, I thought if you put honors physics, organic chemistry, and general bio 1 together, this class is still harder
Classes are amazing but tooooo long. It is exhausting after 3h20mins. LOTS of reading and writing. Dr. Hand is very helpful but also a tough grader.
Pop quizzes can sometimes be difficult, but the class is very interesting. Grading on papers/tests is very fair, and assignments are actually interesting.
Took my two classes with Dr. Hand and loved her. She covers really interesting and relevant material. She does a great job of getting people talking with discussions instead of just lecturing for hours. She is a hard worker and expects a lot out of her students but you will grow a lot as a reader and writer by taking her classes.
I took a freshman seminar with her and it was amazing! She is clear about expectations, gives good feedback, and is very funny. There is a lot of writing and reading, but material is interesting. She also assigns a lot of projects, but they really add to the readings and class discussions. The class was a lot of work but it changed my life!
Dr. Hand is one of those professors who you just simply know that they're really knowledgeable at their topic. I love how she tries to get us to actively discuss about the material. But watch out- get ready to read. There was a period where I had to read at least 50 pages for every class.
Prof Hand is truly amazing. She does assign a lot of reading and has high expectations, but she is such a great professor and person that I wanted to put in the work for her. The material is also super interesting, and she let us debate it instead of just lecturing. It is clear that she really respects her students. You will learn so much from her!
If you are conservative in any way, do not take this class. She is very biased and plays favorites. She acts like shes chill and understanding but if she does not like you , she will give no quarter but if you do make it on her good side then you should be fine.
She has high expectations but is willing to give extra credit to anyone who asks. She wants everyone to succeed but also to learn how to be a more openminded and accepting human being. If you agree with her, you will get an A. The course is discussion based so if you come in close minded/sexist/racist/homophobic, be ready to get roasted by Judith.
If you have a chance to take a class with her, do it! She is so passionate about the subject which leads to great discussions. You have to work for your grade though; there is a lot of reading which is often followed by a quiz (but she drops your lowest 3 quiz grades) and you need to study for the exams to do well. Also, don't take if conservative
Good Professor. Definitely passionate about what she does, shows in her lectures. If anything makes her mad, like loud students, she's not afraid to show it. She is hella scary at times. But her grading will always be fair.
Dr Hand is a very good lecturer and the class and content was very interesting. However, the work load is incredibly heavy and she is a tough grader.
I absolutely loved Dr. Hand's class! It was definitely my hardest class of the semester and came with a lot of work, but it was worth it for the content and material. Overall, she's a hilarious and down-to-earth professor, and I'd recommend her class to any sassy feminist out there.
Professor Hand is so entertaining and genuine, which made the 3 hour seminar more bearable. Lots of readings with occasional pop quizzes. Overall, the content was interesting, and I liked that the class was heavily discussion-based. If you make an effort to write clearly and to the point, she is not a super tough grader. Definitely worth the work!
C100: Social Justice is a seminar style class, with a lot of reading and a lot of writing that does not have clear criteria. There were no real benchmarks to meet and my class mates and I were surprised when we all received our grades. She is funny, available , and incitemen but I would stay away if you do not want to spend too much time on 1 class
Honestly one of the best classes I've ever taken. She is an amazing instructor. I'm not a soc major but she almost made me want to switch! There's a lot of reading, and she's tough but fair. Very discussion based. It's clear she's knowledgeable and passionate about the subject.
Im absolutely terrified of her, but I also love her at the same time.
Discussion heavy. More work than average C100, especially with frequent pop quiz and the final group project. Dr. Hand is just awesome. She is humorous, willing to listen to any ideas, discussions in class. Assigns really good, interesting intro readings.
Dr. Judith Hand made my soul leave my body. Take this class if you want, just know.
Worst professor Ive ever had hands down. I did love the class though and I would recommend the class to anyone. But I would never recommend her especially after my experience. Shes a very tough and picky grader for silly reasons. And I dont think shes fair Even the extra credit shes picky about grading do not take her. Shes a disappointment.
I've taken two of her classes and would take more if I could. I've really enjoyed her. There is a good amount of reading and writing so I could put effort into anything you hand in even if it seems small. Very worth it. She's very accessible and willing to help her students out. Very old school and organized. Mostly discussion. Small quizzes.
This is my second semester with Dr. Hand and I think she's great! Class discussions are always interesting and you'll do just fine if you complete the assigned readings and participate in class. Very engaging and cares about her students. Her class was one of the early reasons I became interested in Sociology!
I took this class (SOCL 304) as a freshman although it is usually meant for upperclassman. You have to work hard in this class. There are a lot of reading and essays. Professor Hand is a great teacher though! She is so funny and she is always there to help if you need it. I would definitely take a class with her again!
she is awesome
Dr. Hand is an engaging, funny, and enthusiastic professor. She really cares about the subject and it shows! Be prepared to do a lot of reading and to be quizzed on them (so do them), but they are all interesting and worth the time. Great class!
Dr. Hand is definitely interesting. I did not anticipate the amount of reading or writing she requires, but I think it's all interesting and valuable material and she's very clearly passionate about it all. Try not to schedule a class that starts 10 minutes after this one ends.
I don't hate her but I don't love her. Her class was interesting but the amount of reading was ridiculous and kinda ruined it for me. Her grading style was really specific- if you don't write like a sociology major, your grade will suffer. Not to be that person but she hated my "STEM style" and I ended up with lots of B's. Just don't expect an A.
I love Dr. Hand! This class was super interesting and she always made lectures and discussions relevant, engaging, and often funny. Her grading policies are pretty inflexible, but the class overall was very easy if you follow the guidelines.
I spent the entire semester feeling frustrated with this professor and this class. She assigns an excessive amount of readings and assignments. There are two semester-long projects (an individual and a group), two exams, and a "7ish" page paper. Additionally, the discussion isn't structured in any way. All I gained from this class was a headache.
This professor doesn't know how to teach. Sh just initiates discussions that don't help to understand what she wants the class to know. She assigns way too many readings for a class is a a freshman year requirement. She has a final paper of about 7 pages, a final project that takes up the whole semester, and on top of all that a final exams.
Dr. Hand was a very funny and personable professor to have freshman year. She definitely expects a lot from her students, but she also cares a lot about them. She is very knowledgable about the content she teaches.
She doesn't give clear grading instructions at all, but if you ask her directly she will. Grades easily, participate in class and she'll grade more leniently. Very easy to reach her via email. 2-3 readings per class but some people don't read any and do fine.
Dr. Hand assigns a lot of readings, but she drops your lowest quiz grade. Her directions are often vague, and her clarifications don't always help. The class itself was interesting, but her lecturing style was not very engaging or helpful. Participation is a huge aspect of her class, so keep that in mind.
Dr. Hand is really passionate and makes class interesting. Her instructions are often unclear but she's happy to meet with you to clarify. There are readings due almost every class, but if you're interested in Sociology then you'll enjoy them. Class is discussion-heavy, so participating is important but not difficult. Highly recommend this class.
Dr. Hand is a brilliant professor and I adored every reading assigned. Be careful with the memoirs and make sure that you practically change every aspect of your paper for each rewrite or you will not get a good grade. Her feedback is also somewhat vague so unless you're already a good writer, I'd recommend another coll 150.
one of the most passionate and best teachers Ive ever had. but she has like 5 papers due at the end and group projects and endless quizzes, theres probably an easier coll 150 to take if its for a requirement. that being said, her class was incredibly interesting and applicable in everyday life.
Professor Hand is so great. The class consists of papers, quizzes, and exams. The only thing I hated was the amount of reading, I think it was excessive but all the material was interesting, enlightening, and engaging. Overall good experience just that I felt overwhelmed by the reading but you get over it.
dr. hand is a very passionate teacher. she's kind and friendly, but she is very tough. we have basically 60 pages of reading per week, and then a paper due almost ever other week. be prepared to read and write. this class will probably take a lot of time and effort.
The subject itself isn't inherently hard in my opinion, however, her often unclear instructions can lead you to drop a letter grade. She is knowledgeable of the topic, however, her lectures weren't that beneficial to me. Gives spontaneous quizzes on the reading, but says they aren't pop quizzes because she tells you day 1 you'll have such quizzes.
this clas is A LOT and definitely too much for a coll200. weekly reading quizzes, papers every other week, a midterm and a final, and a semester long project w a research paper, on top of at least 100pages in weekly readings. i wont lie the materials were great, but you have to put in a ton of work to be successful in this class and its not easy
This class was really interesting! But be warned, Professor Hand gives a lot of work and her instructions are often unclear. Shes fun and seems to care about her students a lot, but theres a lot of quizzes and projects so just be prepared to do the work.
If you have any type of accommodation I don't recommend this class. Dr. Hand did not respect my medical accommodations and actually suggested alternatives because she did not want to "change how she taught" for me. Class is reading heavy, with quizzes almost every class. Projects are worth a majority of the grade for the semester.
Dr. Hand is a cool human being and I don't regret taking her class. I came into it with a love of writing and an interest in a lot of the topics covered, so I did well. However, if you don't enjoy writing and sociology, I would not recommend this class. From what I've heard from peers, this is a more difficult, labor-intensive COLL 150.
Topics covered are super interesting, but there was a lot of readings, pop quizzes, and projects. Hand is a bit unclear about what she expects from u & her test Qs and grading is pretty iffy- def take notes on readings to review for 2 exams, including stats and research methods. She's VERY strict abt deadlines and no electronics. funny prof tho!
Dr. Hand is a difficult person to say the least. She is extremely rude to her students and is incredibly unorganized when giving instruction. She is super insightful and I really enjoyed her lectures however she was constantly just rude to her students and had too many projects going on at once.
If you are not a native speaker and not a sophisticated writer, you cannot have a good grade on her class. Her course is not designed to improve, but to test your writing.
Dr Hand is very caring and keeps her class engaging. I'm not sure if I would go out of my way to take another class with her, but she would not discourage me from taking a course. Her grading criteria was often vague and left up to interpretation. Compared to other COLL 100 courses, social justice is notably more work.
Lots of readings! Multiple due every class period w/ very frequent pop quizzes. The course content is very interesting and relevant though. Lectures were engaging, but their quality depends on the class's willingness to participate. Assignments/expectations are often unclear, but she's a nice person and tries her best to help. Tough course overall.
I cannot recommend this class enough. Dr. Hand is an amazing/passionate/inspirational professor with so much knowledge to share. Don't get me wrong her class wasn't a walk in the park, there was a lot of reading and essays. But she wants you at office hours, to be engaged, & cares about you. I'm taking 2 of her classes which is a lot but doable.
Love Judith, this class was so interesting/informative. Prep for a lot of reading and some essays, but I loved this class. She really cares about each individual student and wants to help you grow. Discussion could be so intriguing listening to everyones perspectives but may b dry. Such a kind soul, take her class while you still can.
Great person/personality but she is a tough grader on her papers, and there are a lot of papers. Lots and lots of reading, so don't put it off until the last minute.
Dr. Hand is passionate about what she teaches. That being said this class was unnecessarily hard for a COLL 200. Get ready to have 4-6 dense academic readings before each class and like 6 papers. Her exams are very hard and each is worth 25% of your final grade along with a group project being 25% as well. Those grades will be on an index card.
This class is the reason my sleep schedule was non-existent. If you're a chronic procrastinator, don't take this class. She's a tough grader and always seems to be in a bad mood. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this class to someone else, but if you can get ahold of the reading list, it's actually SO interesting.
Professor Hand is engaging during lectures and quite funny. There is a lot going on at the end of the semester and it is easy to get overwhelmed. There are quizzes on the readings almost every class.
Dr. Hand is difficult. She gives a lot of reading alongside several projects/papers with unclear instructions. There always seemed to be a lot going on her class. We also had a quiz at least once a week (sometimes twice). Although she is intimidating and tough, on papers, she was a fairly reasonable grader and made class engaging.
I love Dr. Hand- she's hilarious and cares about her students. Her COLL100 is a lot of work for the level that it is (lots of readings, papers, ongoing projects), but I found it rewarding. Things to know: -Dr. Hand does not tolerate tech use -random quizzes on readings throughout semester (says they aren't pop quizzes bc she tells us on first day)
Dr. Hand was well versed in the material and as long as you interacted with her and participated in class, she generally liked you. Not an exceptionally harsh grader, although not every assignment had a well-explained rubric. She HATES technology, so hide your phones in class.
Hand is the worst teacher I've ever had. She's an awful grader, she made 4 kids cry this semester bc of her assignment policy. If work isn't printed, stapled, and submitted by 8 she wont accept it and is callous to those who try. I have never met a teacher so unwilling to work with students, it is extremely obvious she has nothing else in her life.
I have her as a professor this semester and I'm obsessed with her. She's very funny and quite a unique character and makes a 3 hour long class go by very quick. I understand why people don't like her but if you adjust to her teaching style you'll be fine. She hates tech but it honestly doesn't matter for this class. Highly recommend.
For a 150, there is no need for a class to create this much stress. Doctor Hand is hardly the most accommodating professor in the world, and there is a reason she had the rep she does amongst students. I read a review before the class that said they have never met a professor so unwilling to work with students, which couldn't be more accurate!!
She expects everyone to be of a higher level than what some of us are and she is not willing to work with you there. While she is funny and sometimes the discussions are actually entertaining, 97% of the time I felt so much dread coming into class. For a once a week class there is an insane amount of work to do.
Everyone hates Jude but I genuinely love her so much. She establishes rules about attendance and such at the beginning of the semester and stands by them, but they are very reasonable and she's so entertaining and knowledgeable. She has built in extensions and absences that are totally fair. I love her despite what people may say.
Progressive in her views, old-fashioned in her ways. Class is tough, but I don't regret taking it. One large group project, a few papers, some written exams. She's not unreasonable, but is particular about her way of doing things and has high expectations--she says upfront class isn't for everyone. Insightful discussions. B+ & I worked hard for it.
OK class but outdated and draconian teaching policies that effectively means that if you miss a class and it's out of your control it can either be a few points off or doom your semester to a D. Would not recommend to anyone with sleep issues or a busy schedule or similar reasons why you might miss a class and not foretell it a week beforehand.
Dr. Hand is a very knowledgeable professor, but she can be pretty rude and impulsive and play it off as "just a part of her personality," which makes the classroom environment uncomfortable. Her class has lots of interesting material, but it is definitely more than the usual COLL100 class. Personally would not recommend.
grading policies that will give out zeros if you forgot to follow insignificant instruction specifities, but at least quality bar for the writing assignments is fairly low. Easy A if you like constantly following specific instructions, but wouldn't reccomend to anyone whor prefers to spend more time working on their paper than their paperwork.
Many people complain about her, but I loved Dr.Hand a lot. Yes, she is strict about technology but she's understanding and gives pretty detailed feedback on assignments. She has quizzes every class but they're more like exit tickets where you answer a question about the day's reading. She assigns interesting readings that prompt good discussions.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! If you're a freshman who isn't the best at writing, this class will not help you. There is constant papers to be done and you will be staying up at night to do it. Also, hide your phones, she doesn't like technology. Overall, this class is not for the weak, but readings are interesting. Be ready to discuss and pop quizzes!
I love Dr. Hand!! Her class is difficult, however 100% DOABLE. I learned so much, loved the readings and her lectures. There are papers, obviously, it's a 150, and some pop quizzes on the readings. However, if you're interest in social justice, totally take this class.
This class was definitely a lot of work for a 100, but I loved the course content so much that I would take it again in a heartbeat. Dr. Hand is the best, I chose her as my advisor after taking both her 100 and 150. She is definitely a hard-ass, but get to know her and she's the sweetest.
dont take her classes ... pop quizzes once or twice a week so attendance is basically mandatory even though it technically isnt.
this is my second semester in a row that I've had a class with Dr.Hand and once again it was a delight to be her student. She is a great lecturer who lets her silly side out every now and then and makes the class a very comfortable environment to have discussions. Love love love Dr.Hand
Avoid this class if you value transparency or your GPA. Grades are tracked on a messy paper, and you won't know where you stand until the semester ends even if you ask her. Pop quizzes every class (no excuses for being late), and tough grading wrecked my GPA, I got the best midterm score, and still only got a C+, my other classes were A,A,A-.
DO NOT TAKE JUDE HAND. All assignment have 4-5 page description full of little elements that if u do not include will give u a 0 on the whole assignment. I did well on all quizes, participated, did great on midterm and final, but I messed up 1 project, got a zero (in october), i met with her about it, she said I will likely fail. WTF
This class is a trap. It seems light but gets worse, last week has a Group poster presentation, a 10+ page paper, a final reflection for another project (where u are asked to talk about something new) and a Final Exam on more than 250 pages of articles, with super specific questions about each 23 articles. I know 4 guys who failed. class size of 20
"not mandatory attendance" pop quiz every class. Insane workload, asking people to starve for a weekend to experience hunger for the SNAP project
To be honest I'm not the best writer but she makes this class harder than it should be and there are so many papers. Tough grader, available in her office but isn't helpful. If you can avoid this class do it. Many papers and group project at end of semester. Some readings were good. Not very clear on directions and got a D on a paper with no redo
For a COLL100, I would say this class is difficult - not impossible. Dr. Hand is very old fashioned - no technology in her classes. The SNAP challenge does not force you to "starve" - it is your choice to participate physically. The longest paper is 7 pages. Exams are all multiple choice. Don't skip your readings - you'll need them.
LOVED this class with Dr. Hand. Reading is heavy but enjoyable (you need to do the readings)! Participate in class - she is very knowledgable on subjects of social justice and inequality. Graded by a few things but exams are straightforward with a combo of multiple choice and essay prompts. Not designed to hurt you. Quizzes almost every class !!!
Personally, I really enjoyed Professor Hands class. I always stayed back, asked questions, and received good feedback from her. Though I enjoyed it, it was definitely difficult, I always struggled with completing the readings and taking good notes for them.
Attendance was required, and we had multiple pop quizzes that could test any reading. Her grading on essays was hard, and her feedback was unhelpful. She refuses to help at office hours with writing, which is annoying in a writing seminar. The homework was long and tedious, and she didn't appear to like teaching us students.
Very progressive and has interesting points in lectures. literally so funny. a ton of projects (one big group one). participate, read, and you'll be fine. shes hilarious and caring. be aware of reading quizzes relatively frequently. take if you are interested in sociology or social justice. i loved this class!!!!
Dr. Hand has core expectations: do the readings, participate in discussion, & read directions. She has typical northeast delivery which some take as aggressive, but she is incredibly kind & hilarious. Her feedback is helpful. Participation is vital, she makes it fun, but will not carry the class for you. Pop q's are easy if you do the readings.
I loved mems priv + ineq. Expect readings before every class, and participate in discussion. As humanities classes go, the amount of reading was super manageable. It's a 150 so there are papers but most are short so, take time to understand the assignment you'll do well. Hand is FUNNY and knowledgable about socl, I loved listening to her speak.
Biggest setback was fully understanding readings & having a quiz. I received 0s with comments saying I clearly did not interact with the material when I did. Quizzes are not suitable to check for reading completion when students first learn the material solo & can miss analytical details and logics she wants. Challenging with a learning disability!
Prof. Hand was a great professor. I was pretty intimidated at first, but they are very caring and genuinely want their students to succeed. They're always available during office hours, and despite the rigor, the class really pays off. I feel like I grew more in this course than in any other college course!
