The class is difficult and there is a lot of information to remember but its really interesting.
A lot of course material to memorize/grasp, but for the most part it was very interesting information. She showed videos during lecture which all 400+ students seemed to enjoy. Very good lecturer, and nice to look at too.
Class was very interesting yet tests were very difficult and grading was very hard. Not helpful to take with this teacher if you want to get into psych major.
I thought this class was pretty easy, as long as you went to lectures, took good notes, and study (memorize) them, you were good to go for the midterm. The midterms were pretty straightforward and it's all multiple choice. She's also very enthusiastic which make the class more interesting.
She was so organized and clear, it made it a lot easier. She gave good study guides and was available for help. Multiple choice tests. She was so cute and nice!
Great prof, my favorite so far!
Very good teacher. Makes the class interesting and as long as you actually pay attention its hard.
she was a great teacher. she was interesting, very knowledgable, and organized. she would explain things over again so that everyone understood. although there is a lot of memorization and material to cover, it is not to hard as long as you study for the quizs. its one of those classes you don't want to miss but you enjoy listening to the lectur
Great enthusiastic teacher, funny, laughed at herself a lot, but interesting. Class was harder than expected, but I still enjoyed it.
Good Professor, take her class!!!
The beginning of the class was fun but somehow near the end she managed to make it real boring to me....however, the class was incredibly easy. How nobody gets a 4.0 on it, I don't know.
Explanations were very clear. Very enthusiastic. I looked forward to going to this class. Definitely read the book and keep up with the memorization. Also, do the extra credit psych experiments if your grade is anything below a 4.0-- so easy to raise your grade.
Great class!! Mrs McLaughlin relates the psychological principles presented to her own life, which she cracks up to and I did too more often than not. Her stories didn't detract from learning the material, just added to it. Her lecture notes are well organized, unlike many other teachers I've had. The tests were easy. I barely studied and aced them
Very clear and easy to understand. Uses lots of good examples...video clips, stories, etc. Tests are surprisingly difficult though.
best prof i've had. take her class!
Good teacher, examples where nice. although you will here alot about her kid in class. all around pretty good
Fantastic teacher! Very easy class, the study guides tell you everything you need for tests. I ended up reading only what she didn't cover in lecture. Very straightforward and organized. Extremely easy to get a 4.0, especially if you do extra credit.
Great professor! She explais everything very clearly with fun and relatable explanations. Despite the big size of the class she somehow made it interactive and very engaging. Also, her way of notetaking made it very easy to follow along with the lecture. Fantastic professor!
AWESOME TEACHER! I love going to lectures and I learned so much. She makes the class so fun. But when it came to the tests, no one could do very well. I knew the book and lectures like the back of my hand and I still didn't get a high 3. I've heard the other professor is boring but easier to get a 3.8+.
A wonderful professor. She is extremely organized, funny, and clear with her explanations of concepts. The tests are easy if you review the study guides. I learned a great deal of useful information and would recommend her to anyone.
best teacher
just memorize notes
Great Prof. Fun, very lecture oriented. so go to lecture or have friends copy notes, but it's very important that you are there. I went to her office hours and my grades just kept going up. so i highly recommend her. :)
She is a great teacher. She was interesting to listen to cuz she always had stories to tell. You should always come to lecture, they aren't boring. Some of her exam questions are surprisingly difficult, but if you answer the study guide questions and come up with examples of your own, you can do very well on the multiple choice exam.
Excellent teacher. Really fun lectures that included great examples. Renewed my interest in psychology completely.
She uses overheads and writes out all of the lectures.
awesome teacher! this class is why i became a psych major. great lecturer and never boring. she even gives away money
Pretty interesting class. Cover alot of topics that are very relevant. Lectures are interesting. Just make sure you attend lecture and read the assigned sections in the book. Overall, a cool class. Great Proff. She's got a great personality and alot of cool stories and not too bad to look at either :)
Lectures were really interesting. Attending lectures and studying her notes are all you need to get an A.
Great teacher. Excellent job of teaching and great use of examples and book. All you need is the lecture notes, her website and to read over your book and I guarantee you'll be fine. Just memorize a lot of definitions really.
Cool prof... pretty clear lectures; most of the tests come straight from lecture notes so make sure you know those
Easy 4.0 if you attend lectures and read ? She uses an overhead template to help you organize notes taken in class ? Easy multiple choice midterms ? No final ? Very friendly, clear, direct, and intelligent ? Lots of extra credit opportunities ? You could just read and not go to class; however lectures are interesting and beneficial ? Great class!
She was very nice and approachable. Her lectures were easy to understand and you just have to keep your notes clear. If you don't want to go to lecture just do the readings, and if you go to lecture you don't really need to do the readings
Very nice professor, makes the subject crystal clear with funny examples from her own life. Very approachable, easy A if you go to lecture and just read up on the bits she didn't cover in lecture (which will be made obvious in the study guide, not that its that hard skimming through the readings)
FAVORITE TEACHER!!!!!she's super nice and friendly, her classes are enjoyable because of her great use of examples and stories of her own life. she really does care about her students and its easy to see that she loves teaching!the class isn't hard if you just attend lecture and listen.
She is one of the best professors here! She empathizes with students and makes her classes and exams easy and comprehensible! Also, the extra credit opportunities are a piece of cake. I highly recommend taking McLaughlin's class for psych 101.
She's a phenomenal professor. Her lectures are always clear and interesting. She uses great examples that one can easily relate to. Exams are multiple choice and mostly from notes. Extra credit was a piece of cake
Best UW professor period. She truly cares about your learning. Just do the work and you'll get a 4.0. Amazing speaker. You'll never fall asleep in this class! (: TAKE IT!!!!!
Great Professor. All test are multiple choice but don't let that fool you. This class will require work to get your grade. There is also 0.3 gpa extra credit if you do the psych research. Highly recommended for people that need PSYCH 101.
Great class! Always interesting lectures and fun case studies. Her lecture format is really clear. All exams were based on lecture or the textbook material. Tried to contact her outside of class and she never responded though.
I LOVED her class so much! She has great ways of explaining things. The class was 5 days a week and I only missed one because it was so interesting. 4 multiple choice tests plus you can earn extra credit. Fun class. If you can take her class, you should.
Great professor, definitely recommend for 101. Her tests are extremely reasonable and she doesn't try to trick you. She explains most everything in lecture, just read the parts she didn't go over (which can be found in the chapter introductions). Took this online and it was a great experience.
Really interesting class. The tests aren't hard if you just go over her lectures. She tells you exactly what to study so nothing is a surprise
Amazing professor! she really cares about how psychology applies to each and every student! TAKE THIS CLASS
Amazing teacher. Highly recommended for those with no prior interest in psych, and also to those who are interested in psych.
This class is very easy. She practically gives you the information necessary to do goo din this class. Minimal effort required outside of class. Just thoroughly review the study guide before the exams and you'll easily get a 3.7+. There is also .3 extra credit.
She is so nice! I love her!
Proffesor McLaughlin is great! Her lectures are quite interesting and simple to understand. Attending lecture is mandatory! With enough studying, her exams are manageable. Visit her office hours because she is super friendly. She applies personal examples to make her lec engaging. She even danced to Gangnam Style once! Super cool prof!
She is amazing! The best professor I had at the UW so far! Strongly recommend taking her class.
Bring your clicker, attend lectures, do the extra credit!
McLaughlin is the best Psych prof out there. She is clearly passionate about teaching, and her use of examples in class made learning the material fun and easy. If you simply study what she puts on her study guides and do the extra credit, your grade will be fine.
Pretty funny teacher who combines examples of her former experiences into the material to make things easier to understand. Homework/participation is a breeze and was based on whether you did it or not: 0 or full points so just do it. The class overall was not difficult. Just go everyday to see what material is covered to the textbook.
Honestly, she is the greatest professor. She knows what she is teaching, and homework is a breeze, you can just write random stuff for credit. Take this class for a grade booster.
Her lectures were almost always straight out of the book, which means you don't really have to go that often. She moves pretty slowly and is really clear, and is also good about reminding the class of due dates and tests. Overall really simple class with a nice teacher.
Probably the best professor I've had ever. Go to her lectures - she doesn't post slides online so it's important to take notes. She makes material relatively easy to understand. Also a very charismatic teacher - always smiling!
I am taking her online course. The mean of midterm is 38 out of 50 and if you put effort you must get over 45. I believe you can get a good grade if you watch her videos, take notes carefully and try to understand and remember them. She explains everything clearly with good examples.Homework is very interesting and useful. I like her class!
WONDERFUL!I wish she could be my professor for all my classes. Like almost all professors at UW you are not just a number to her. YOU'LL LOVE HER! I learned so much.
She is compliant with her students, and genuinely wants to help the ones that fall behind.
She was very clear with all of her explanations and she seemed to have a personal example for everything. Her tests are pretty straightforward but you definitely have to read the book if you want a good grade. Also do the extra credit and you can boost your gpa up to 0.3 extra. Definitely recommend taking her class if it's available!
McLaughlin is one of the better teacher's I've had at UW. Her examples are very helpful and I definitely recommend taking her online class. The course is extremely fair and she offers a good amount of extra credit. As long as you stay on track of the assignments you will do well in the class. NOTE: she will say the final is easier, but it is harder
The class was ok since it is mainly online and there isn't much contact with the professor which is expected. There is only one midterm unlike the normal class where you have 3 more therefore you kinda have everything riding on that one test. I found the professor extremely condescending and not understanding or helpful.
I took this class online and I really liked her lectures! She was very clear and used many examples that helped me understand the topics. I never went into office hours, but she seemed like she would be helpful given her deadline reminders about homework and her detailed responses to questions posted on our online forum.
Her lectures cover a lot of information, but are very engaging. She uses plenty of personal anecdotes and examples to make complex topics easy to understand. Her class has a lot of tests, but they aren't cumulative.
Her tests are near impossible and your entire grade depends on them because there are practically no other assignments. I can study for handfuls of hours and nights before the exam and still only get a 22/40, because it is multiple choice and the test questions are examples that could apply to plenty of the vocab words. Take a different psych prof
Has amazing study guide outlines for preparation for what's on the test. Fill them out and you should be good.
I really liked her! Super sweet, but if you do the readings you will do fine on get exams. She provides review packets.
Very interesting lectures, she always makes a point for the material to be understandable. Tests are very straight forward if you complete the study guides she posts. Great class overall.
Judith is so cute and gives the best examples from her own life experiences when explaining key topics. The beginning of the class is kind of slow but overall the class is very interesting and not too tough. 4 exams, very low effort homework assignments, and big opportunity for extra credit. Didn't bother with the textbook.
Judith's teaching does nothing for this class. The way she writes her tests makes them near impossible to score well, even after hours and days of studying. She is no help in office hours, after attending all classes, doing all homework, and doing some extra credit I still failed. Do not take her class.
Very clear on what's expected of you, just do the study guides before each exam. Lectures are awesome, very interesting. She uses a lot of examples and tells a lot of stories.
Best professor I've met in UW. Her class is engaging and enjoyable to attend. Nearly skipped half of my classes before this quarter but for her class I missed none.
McLaughlin was a great professor. Examples in lecture really helped with recall in exams. Beware there are 4 exams, albeit noncumulative, which correspond to much of the grade. The exams are straightforward MCQ so very easy to get a 100% if you studied for them. There is never anything that wasn't covered in either book or lecture.
Professor McLaughlin gives interesting lectures. She brings Psych very close to life. The real life examples she gave are very impressive in my long-term memory. She and her TAs reuse the examples in tests to help us recall the concepts. Assignments are easy. Regardless of your quiz score, she gives full credit as long as you do more practice.
This class is purely fact based so get ready to remember practically everything! She gives good real life examples but when it comes down to the tests, it doesn't help.
Judy is great at teaching psychology concepts and she gave great lectures. She makes the topics memorable with personal and other examples that tie into the class. Her class is based only on test scores and extra credit points, so its important to succeed on tests, which are rely heavily on memorization. Study hard and you will do well.
The best professor the world has ever seen. Since taking her class, I look at life better and even started working out again. Her grading is fair and so is she. Take her class even if you are getting a degree in something completely different than psych.
Amazing lectures, very interactive, with excellent examples. Overall great, but you have to put the effort in to do well in this class. Attend lectures. Take notes (or rewrite them later, whatever's best). DO THE READING. Study more than a day before the exams, they're easy as long as you actually know &understand the terms. Do the extra credit!!!
Professor McLaughlin gives great lectures and many examples that are both interesting and make the material easy to remember. Tests require a lot of memorization, but topics are clearly outlined and it is not hard to do well.
Best teacher I have ever seen. Although the content is not easy, it was really inerest!!!!
Best professor I have had at UW! She clearly enjoys what she teaches, and always uses great examples. The canvas page is extremely organized and easy to navigate. Study guides given before the tests are extremely helpful and relevant to the test material. Great extra credit opportunities! Loved her, and was so sad for a great class to end.
Good teacher! and there is 0.3 on gpa for extra credit.
One of my favorite professors at uw. Always had real life situations and stories to relate to the lecture for the day which made it easier to remember and it was always funny and exciting. I would take again.
You can participate in studies to receive up to +0.3 on your grade. Exams are all scantron, and she provides a lengthy study guide. The content of this class isn't too bad, but you need to study and memorize a lot of material. Online assignments are pretty easy, and TA's give good feedback if you need it. I really enjoyed her personality in lecture
She is an amazing psychology professor! The lectures are very interesting!!! Four exams during the quarter but are all non-cumulative, she will drop one of your lowest grades for the exam. And also have 0.3 extra credit if you do labs participation outside of class.
Judith is very kind and you can tell she cares about her students. If you go into this class expecting an easy 4.0, don't! There is a lot of memorization involved and you have to know detailed information about multiple topics for the 4 exams throughout the quarter. They are all equally weighted, and she does offer up to .3 points of extra credit.
I found it extremely difficult to feel Professor McLaughlin was fit to teach a psych 101 course. Professor McLaughlin referred to people living with mental illness as "sufferers," she did not clearly or accurately explain anorexia, claimed schizophrenia to be the worth mental disorder, etc. The DSM was mentioned on rare occasions.
Professor McLaughlin was very professional and had very clear expectations. There is lots of memorization for terms. When I mean "very clear expectations", its that the lectures and the textbook supplemented each other well, so as long as you absorbed all the assigned textbook info and lecture info, you are very well-off.
PSYCH 101 is really a must! Her lectures are interesting and leave an impact. There is very very little homework, maybe every couple weeks. There are about 4 tests and they are reasonable if you go to class. Never read a page of textbook and did just fine. Do a couple online surveys and psych studies and get 0.3+ gpa boost. Highly recommend!
Hated this class. Way too much material to learn for each test and she never gave the best examples in class.
gives great lectures where you'll learn the material needed to pass the tests AND valuable life lessons to take with you throughout and after college tips: GO TO CLASS, take notes, make quizlets, study quizlets thoroughly, repeat
Took online in spring 2020. Very easy class. Pre-recorded lectures w/ fairly easy knowledge checks every 1-2 lessons. Had 7 total activities or assignments on current lesson at the time (easy & fun). Some ppl didn't do the readings but they were helpful to me. There's many readings but they're not too long or stressful. Nice professor.
Very clear and well organized online class! Lectures were super easy, great examples so facts were easy to remember. Memorization based course, but no surprises on exams. Assignments were creative and fun as well. LOVED PROF. MCLAUGHLIN!
She is an amazing professor and made me want to major in psychology !!! Tests are challenging but it was also my Freshman year and I was getting adjusted to college. Such an amazing and interesting class.
She's the best professor ever and I only saw her through pre-recorded videos. So nice, makes all of the information understandable with crazy personal examples, clearly passionate about the topic. I wish I was a psych major just so I could take more of her classes.
Best professor! She created a clear schedule for all the readings, lectures, and homework for students. This kind of format is helpful for remote learning. Tests are not that hard but definitely required you to study hard before exams. To sum up, take notes, do those study guides, and turn in works on time, you will be fine.
Im taking BIO classes and i have a higher grade in that than this class because her quizzes seems so easy but then I'd check my score and it'd be super low. Most of the time I'm confident on my answers too, yet i always get a low score. you can't check your quiz answers either unless u make an appointment. choose a different professor.
I didn't really get to interact much with the professor, but it was a solid class. Not very difficult for me, but I'm a psych nerd, so I guess it would depend. There's extra credit opportunities and most of the grading is based on four tests. Other than that, there were a few easy assignments and the rest is participation. Would recommend!
This class is just the usual! You get what you expect. There are short lectures and polls to participate in everyday. The study guide & knowledge tests before exams are helpful & connected to the actual exam. Easy A if you do your work and understand the material! Also, you can tell professor Mclaughlin is so caring & an a good person!
her lectures were a pleasure to watch, easy to understand and require no memorization. I reviewed twice before tests and got B+/A on all of them. Gives great feedback on assignments and discussions, grades come back quickly and in time in case you need help with concepts. Perfectly structured online class, excellent example to many other professors
Professor McLaughlin is really sweet. Psych101 was really well structured and enjoyable! All that's required of you is to watch lectures and participate in class discussions and polls, which are nice because there is no "right answer". The exams are fair game. I'd recommend taking good notes and utilizing the study guides!
The amount of work in this class is ridiculous when you have to memorize so many terms and apply them during the exam. Besides, you can't even see your grade for the exam and have to email her. I was expected this class to be an easy vlpA to comps with one of my grads class, but end up being the lowest grade I ever have at UW. Don't take her!
Asynchronous lectures. You can take this class at your own pace and it is structured really well. McLaughlin's is really helpful and understanding if you need anything. This class isn't an easy 4.0 but if you do the bare minimum you can get a 3.0 with no issues. Exams are tough but there are study guides and practice tests provided.
