Monotone voice, very boring class. Bring your pillows and MP3 players !
This teaching does NOT want to teach us. No enthusiasm, no energy, boring.
Monotone voice, but she's really nice and understanding! Give her a chance!
Awful teacher. Doesn't want to be there, mean to people who ask questions
Doesn't really want to be there, but is cool by me cause she loves dogs.:)
Fairly easy course, but not a very enthusiastic, stimulating prof!!
Mostly monotonous with odd bursts of energy. Sometimes fun.
Boooo.
stay at home, read the text - that's all she does in class
She was my 1st LING prof, really turned me onto the subject. Is she Magyar?
good teacher, can be funny at times
OMG could she BE any less enthusiastic?
I thought she was a great teacher! And she wasn't always monotoned!
Worst teacher i've had!
this woman is HORRIBLE!! ps. if R. Dyck is TA she is even worse (if poss.)
Lectured straight out of the book. Made me drop the class out of boredom.
Not particularly interesting, but I don't think she's as bad as others have said
Great Prof, bad rep...i learned alot
Worst professor in the history of proffessors. You can't hear a things she says.
Lectures out of the text, forces class participation- so do homework!
How can anyone say she was anything but horrible !!??
likes dogs, talks quietly... the only course i've ever REALLY slept in!

Her lectures were horrible (where's the enthusiasm in the subject matter?) She turned me away from ever taking Ling again.
I can't believe everyone is being so hard on her! If you'd just pay attention in class and listen to her, everything would be more interesting. She makes quiet jokes, so sit up front and it's a lot better
Sometimes she could be a tad bit boring, however, when she did not read directly from the text she was very good. Her tests are fairly easy as long as you know the material.
WOW, award for the most unenthusiastic prof in the world. If you read the text, you don't even need to go to the class. She tells you almost exactly what's on the tests before you write it, so that's pretty nice.
BOOOORING!!!!!!!
Not on the path to Linguistic Fame, completely unenthusiastic, lame jokes, ok to take class with - if you're in Saskatchewan. (Pssst, go home)
she's a rude person and discourages participation with her unenthusiam
This class is so horrible - not even Nylvek wants to be there! Its like she picked the shortest straw and is taking her anger out on us. She teaches out of the study guide and is incredibly discouraging and rude to students. I do not recommend!
She is so unapproachable and scary. She is unkind and I would never go to her for help because I would be afraid of being made to feel stupid.
Oh god. Don't get me started.
Judith is like linguistics, you love it and you hate it. Sometimes she is just so funny and sarcastic and witty. And when she is grumpy its funny too! Its worth coming to the class just to see how long you can stay awake by punching each other in the face
No Comments
Judy gets to the point, she doesn't mess around, she lets you know if you are wrong, and she knows a lot about linguistics. Some people don't like her because she is grumpy, but she can't be showing off such a lovely smile all the time.

Monotonous, you want to sleep in class. Gets upset if you don't have the right answer.
OH MY GOD! What is Jude still doing here? The most horrible teacher and class..she doesn't want to be there and could care less about our sucess!! URGH what a pill!
Her teaching delivery is painfully monotonous and she can be somewhat cantankerous at times... fortunately, I was interested enough in the subject matter to stick this one out, coz if I wasn't, I'd be outta there in a real hurry!
Contrary to popular opinion, Judith is quite approachable, and can even be friendly! She may seem tough, but but at least she has control of the class and she knows everything possible about the subject. I think she deserves a little more credit.
Appeared to not like teaching this course; it was as painful for her as it was for the students. This is a self-taught course, don't expect to learn much in class.
I dont think, Judith was nearly as bad as people say. So you don't like analytical grammar? You don't like my peaches, don't shake my tree! A little grammar never hurt anyone.
If you can ignore her breathing difficulties and the monotone voice and have an actual interest in how language is produced and understood by humans then you'll be Judy's #1 fan...everyone else in this class HATES her. Oh don't forget your study guide!
Judith Nylvek may have been born at night, but it certainly wasn't last night!! You're not in grade three anymore. It's time to look past things like breathing problems and hamster-like features, especially if you're aiming for a PhD in syntax!!
i like her! it may appear she doesn't want to be in class, but i think she does. knows language very well! all material is straight from text/workbook, makes class comprehension /home studying easier.
Mylanta. Dr. Nylvek is far too monotone, assigns and reviews a lot of homework and uses painfully long overheads to teach. On my way to an F for sure. Hurray.
For anyone in Ling 100A, Judy is way cooler in Ling 100B. On a scale of 1 to awesome, Judy is definitely super cool.
she was boring in 100b, but nowhere near as bad as she was in 100a. you might as well just take a self-paced class, because you'll sleep right through hers.
If you don't want to work to get a good mark then why even bother coming to University! This prof makes you work for your mark so quit whining and start studying. Her tests are a fair reflection of the course material and the amount of effort you put in.
She's okay as long as you don't ask for help. She seems to get grumpy if you ask questions during office hours or by email. She teaches right from the text. I hate that...why pay tuition if I'm just going to have the text read to me???
Wow. She spent the class droning on and on glancing out the window and sighing. Thoroughly did not want to be teaching, and I rarely went to class. by far the worst class i've taken. BUT, she was approachable so whatever.
a two hour class, full or extremly boring, difficult grammar, and no break. After 20 minutes my brain has left the building, and is given no chance to return. VERY BORING
boring class, but taught clearly enough
She isn't very enthusiastic, I think she's a bit shy. She covers most of the material and gives good grounds for following ling courses. Her tests are fair and she is very helpful.
Fifty people have dropped out of the class. I think that says it all.
The breathing into the mike is pretty bad, but you get used to it. All the tests and e-homework is so easy, that it is impossible to fail this class. She really gets into it, and makes fun of stupid people too. It's great.
Extremely helpful if you ask questions outside of class time. Hard to concentrate on her pure lectures at times, but on the days where these are broken up by other activities it isn't a problem.
She becomes disgruntled if you ask for help, or propose a topic that's different from her proposed topics. She always accentuates the negative, and teaches right from the textbook. Find someone else if you can.
oh god ...... do not ask her a question
Shes a terrible instructor. Very supercilious and condescending. Let me tell you I wouldn't sit through her class again if someone paid ME.
this teacher is horrible, she is not interested in teaching and it reflects in her attitude. By far the sh!tt!est teacher in uvic
In 100B she was friendlier and better at answering questions than in 100A, perhaps because the class was smaller. In 100B you watch a lot of interesting movies, but the lectures are kind of boring. If you read the textbook it's not hard to get a good mark. I don't think she's as bad as people say.
To get the most out of Dr. Nylvek--sit up front. She actually has a wicked sense of humour, but you only catch that in the first few rows. She knows her stuff and expects you to do your work too, and can be hard on those who slack off. 100A is hard because it's a huge lecture hall with tons of students--not the best enviro, but that's how 1yr goes.
Easy to ace this course, but so BORING!! Make sure you bring your pillow.
If you listen in Dr. Nylvek's class and actually do the assignments, you do fine. She's very flexible with due dates and her assignments are fun. She's also funny, but you miss it if you're hiding in the back of class!
She's actually a pretty helpful teacher. Her notes and lecture are easy to understand. However she does expect you to be prepared for class.
Worst professor ever. She was extremely boring and very unhelpful.
Nice lady, interesting lectures if you're really into linguistics..very helpful, a little bit monotone..but overall she's really good.
Seriously so boring, reading the textbook on your own is more beneficial!
I really disliked the course material. If you don't like puzzles, this may not be for you. At first she seems really grouchy. She takes a while to warm up to. By the time the course was done I could see she was just a "softie" with a gruff exterior. She is a SNL sketch just waiting to happen. I liked her, but really really disliked the course.
Boring
This prof really knows her subject inside and out. Not sure if she finds it interesting herself, which makes it hard for students to find interesting. Occasionally humorous, but overall monotone prof. Go to the tutorials, they are so much more in-depth.
Great prof! She has a dry sense of humour that some people don't get. If you do your assignments and actually come to class you'll be fine. READ INSTRUCTIONS ON TESTS!!!!
Most horrible class experience ever!!!!!!!!!!
This prof has a profound ability to make even the most interesting topic dull.
she is quite boring and monotone. first 5 or so classes i wanted to shoot myself but then got used to it. she knows her material well but seems very bored and irritated at life. do the readings and learn the charts and definitions and you're sure to get at least a B+
we never actually got to the topic 'grammar in society'- the name of the course
Despite the horridity that is this class, I have learned one valuable lesson. As I am going to school to learn how to be a teacher, Judith has taught me exactly what NOT to do!
I had been so intrigued by the course description but Dr. Nylvek and her lack of enthusiasm ruined it for me. Sure, there were some great discussions that gave me momentary hope that the class would turn out for the better... but Dr. Nylvek's lack of desire to teach us anything of interest ruined everything.
I was genuinely excited about the content of this course, but Judith managed to completely drain the enthusiasm out of the topic. The textbook (verbal hygiene) was 1000 times more interesting. Skip the class, read the daily recaps that she posts, and google the stuff on your own.
Nice and knowlegeable prof. Classes were interesting, and fun. Nylvek has a great sense of humour if you sit near the front of the class. The textbook was much more boring than her lessons--she tried to spruce the content with class discussions and videos. Learned more about grammar than in high school!
Terrible.
Dr. Judith Nylvek, monotone, drained the enthusiasm in LING 100A. The H/W and M/Ts were fair; however, the final exam was REDICULOUS. The F/E had many questions that we covered in 1-3 lectures. I failed the course because of that. There were not many, but some, questions on the final that we spent more lectures on. I studied stuff not on the exam!
Horrible. Going to class equals to listening to her read word-for-word directly out of the text in a monotone.Assignments were pretty pointless too.
She's fine as a teacher, exactly what I expected in a university prof, maybe even a little better. Easy midterms, easy hw..just study the textbook and do a lot of the exercises in the study guide and you'll do fine.
Oh my God!!! Please don't take this class if you don't have to. I've never had a more boring, uninspiring teacher (and I've been in school for a long time). Sure, she's nice enough but is clearly not that interested in linguistics. Sitting in class is like pulling teeth but you will do fine if you go and do all the exercises.
I was fine with the class until we got to the final exam. For some reason, the testing format was changed, and anything that I had studied for was virtually a) incomprehensible, or b) not on the test at all. That really turned me off - GRRR!!. Now I have to retake the class because I'm in Honours and the final killed my A- after hours of studying.
I don't know if I can continue studying linguistics after having this teacher. She killed it for me.
Expect to study a lot and do work out of class to understand the material. Tutorials help.
Such an fascinating topic, I can't believe how boring she made it. She was so vague about what was on the tests that we were all mystified. She spent most of the class chatting to her favourites in the front about their weekends. She refused to answer questions about exams by email and I will NEVER suffer through another of her courses. AVOID HER!!
Going to her class is painful. She clearly has no passion for linguistics nor does she have the desire to teach it. Talks in monotone the whole time and rolls her eyes at questions. It's obvious that teaching is just a paycheque to her. AVOID AVOID AVOID
Lectures are clear and concise. Not the most fascinating class, but that's just my opinion. Easy to do well in this class with a bit of effort. I agree that she's not the most inspiring lecturer, but she's not terrible either. Overall, a positive experience.
Think you know your grammar? She'll test your assumptions. Okay, so you might feel like a dufus but it's better to speak up than be quiet, which was the majority of the class. This class begs for more participation to perk up interest. Dry humour, yes, but she needs some energy! I'd take another course from her, now that I know what she's like.
Although seems dry and uninspiring at first, is actually just unwilling to unnecessarily devote energy to people who couldn't care less about the class. Is a fantastic teacher with vast linguistic knowledge and experience when you are engaged and attentive in class.
...how to describe this prof... Like an unsalted premium plus cracker. My degree was going to be in Linguistics until I took this class. Hello Geography! If you want to keep your major as Linguistics, AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!
Her lectures are clear, she is fair with work and she gets the job done, but I can't say she's a particularly engaging lecturer. She puts useful resources on the blackboard site and is good about clarifying in class.
Possibly the worst linguistics course I've ever taken. The tests are purposefully designed to trick students and are harder than anything seen in the textbook or in class. The entire course appears to be designed in order to accommodate the prof's weird psychological need for validation through the confusion of her students. Avoid this class!
This prof is hard to describe. In my opinion, she's easy to judge. She comes across kind of cold, and rude at first.. but then as class goes on a bit more you realize that she is extremely knowledgeable and is simply just being straight-foward. She doesn't exactly engage very much and definitely keeps things impersonal, but I'd suggest her for sure
Despite an obviously vast knowledge of the material, her presentation is pretty flat. She'll generally whip through slides, leaving you little time to take even point-form notes, and gives off an unapproachable air. Most students are afraid to ask or answer questions, unless they really, really know the material. She can be tough, but is fair.
Very difficult and not very helpful. Has a tendency to not explain things in a way that helps the students understand - instead she'll look at you and just repeat what she said, instead of clarifying. She played a major role in my decreasing interest in linguistics.
She was quite unfriendly and inapproachable.
Horrible Prof.. She goes through the slides so fast you have no chance of writing them down, and doesnt believe in putting them online. Makes you feel useless if you ask a question. Taught myself the entire course. This is not an easy course, so I dont recommend taking Ling 100A with Nylvek.
I will avoid her in the future. She was never properly prepared for lectures and was very scattered. Instructions were never clear. One big assignment which we didn't really know how to complete. When asked questions, answers were very vague.
TERRIBLE prof. Class was a waste of time and we didn't start covering 'Canadian English' until about the last 3 classes. Midterm was fair but final was incredibly hard. She was useless when you asked a question. Final research project was a major headache. She was very unclear and I ended up doing terrible on it. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER!
Unlike what other people have been saying, I really enjoy Judith's classes. The research project was something new she tried, so she was learning along with you. She is very friendly and helpful if you make an effort in her class. Answer her questions and ask questions & you will do just fine. Got an A+ in both her classes.
I found this course extremely difficult and unclear. I'm not sure if it's Judith or the actual course but the content is over the top and my interest in this course went from high to extremely low. She has a monotone voice and is VERY difficult to pay attention to. I do not recommend taking this course.
Not the greatest prof. Tests were extremely difficult even if you attended the tutorials led by the awesome TA. Think you know your stuff? Prepare to have your self esteem bashed.
Not an engaging teacher at all. She gets it done. Do not expect much.
Judith is well organized, very clear and quite funny if you pay attention! She may be a little monotone, but she is very nice and consistent. The material was hard, but if you put effort and time into studying, the tests will seem easy. Going to class is not enough, you have to practice over and over. Tests will be easy if you put in the time!
SHE knows what SHE is teaching and doesn't seem very interested in making sure you get it as well. Monotone, unclear, and is constantly complicating the material through her "explanations". If you were to stick to the textbook and study on your own without attending class, you'd actually get more from the course (which is sad). Would not recommend.
Judith is exactly what you don't want in a teacher. If you must take this course, you better be ready to study for hours on every chapter and still get a B-. This course is not useful, unless you want to analyze grammar. Judith is not useful unless you want to get some sleep at school. The TA is awesome though!
Very dull, doesn't show interest in others' opinions but still expects you to contribute to class. Her presentation assignment was useless and inconsistent with what she was teaching but the other two assignments were well thought out, though she marked tough. She is slow at getting assignments back, some you will never see again.
She is monotone and reads off her notes and she gives her notes to us as lecture notes and posts them on moodle. You basically could skip class but she takes attendance and does in class participation exercises. AVOID HER IF YOU CAN.
She is very monotone, but does try to make jokes even if they're not that funny. Everyone laughs, I think it gets you brownie points. Class is very tough. I would NOT recommend taking in the summer session. Not enough time, she goes very fast. Participation exercises are graded. Kind of an intimidating prof.
I think Dr. Nylvek gets an undeserved bad rap. She can seem "unfriendly" but she really isn't. She's quite nice and helpful if you show interest in the subject and put effort into it. She's especially good in LING 100B as opposed to 100A. I think she might enjoy those topics a bit more and it makes class more fun. She really knows her stuff.
she stated right in class that previous students she had disliked that she would try to give them the worst marks she could. For some reason she decided I was one of them, I am an A average student and she gave me Cs. She would ask for opinions and shoot them down. very closed minded and has favours students which reflects in the grades
I love this prof. She is wrongly judged. She is actually quite funny once you get to know her and she is very intelligent. I have had her for three classes. I am an average B student but she provides lecture notes on moodle and great study guides so with her I have always received an A. Love her, just be patient with getting to know her demeanour.
Avoid taking her for your linguistics requirement. Thanks to her I don't like linguistics as much anymore. She seems to prefer linguistics majors, does not go out of her way to help you understand concepts. She relies mainly on the course study guide, did not have the text on reserve (not helpful if you are on a budget).
Seems very unenthusiastic about her job. Gives pop quizzes all the time. Is rude to students who ask her questions. She makes what should be my favourite class a very negative experience. I'm very disappointed with her because I pay a lot of money to go to school. It is unfortunate that she may turn many students away from a great subject.
Read your textbook and do all of the in-chapter practice questions. Judith gives you a participation exercise almost every class. The content is boring, but if you don't show up to class you simply won't pass the exams. She is a tough grader and tries to slip you up on some questions in the exam. Read exam questions carefully!
Hard to follow along in lectures. Learned nothing from her, I had to self teach.
Very well organized. Not a hard marker. Go to class, do homework, you'll be fine. Really knows what she's talking about. Study guides helpful for exams. A bit monotonous but actually funny. Loves dogs :) I'm not a linguistics major and I liked her class. I think people are basing their opinions on her demeanour and not on her teaching ability.
As a teacher coming to Canada for certification, Judith Nylvek is a wonderful practitioner at exemplifying what not to do in a classroom. Feedback: Nylvek's teaching style lacks any form of positive feedback. Motivation: her attitude sucks the motivation from her students Evaluation: her marking schema is not effective and overly harsh.
I am a international teacher currently enrolled at uvic and Dr. Nylvek taught me a lot of things, none of which related to the class material. She teaching style exemplified everything I learned not to do while in training. Chastising students, lack of teaching compassion, stifling atmosphere and teacher ennui are her calling cards.
Funny, gives clear notes in class, very interesting material! Would recommend.
Terrible, will NOT take her course anymore and does NOT like linguistic amymore. She hate electronic devices so don't use phones during her class. It is unfair for International students, they cannot search words they don't understand. If she found that you are using phones, she will be angry and shout to you rudely.
Dr. Nylvek is a very nice woman and interesting to speak with outside of class but she has extremely strict rules about any technology in her classroom. She is a very tough marker, exams are not by any means easy and the average grade for my class was 65%. If you do not attend her classes you will not pass.
I really like Judith as she seems relatively down to earth. Something about her makes me feel like she's been through a lot in her life. She just seems sad a lot. All that aside, she is one of the best linguistics profs at UVic. Knowledgeable, will answer questions, doesn't give tons of homework. Tests are hard, but she provides study guides.
She wont allow cellphones or laptops because of the distractions they can cause as well as the fact that you can't draw the symbols with a laptop, so don't show up with one. PSA - don't spend extra for the online access code in a new text book. The online material is EXACTLY what is in the text/study book; no extra readings available or answers.
Great teacher. Funny and straightforward. If you want easy "do nothing" class, this isn't the class for you. She made Linguistics fun.
Super hard material, poor at explaining, picky when grading, do not recommend
Judith is an absolutely lovely lady. As much as I do enjoy her, I had a hard time following her lectures. Textbook had 90% of lecture materials, but lectures didn't help me retain info. I felt like I was drowning in the factual information. It would be wise to re-organise notes/handouts in a more digestible way. Use handouts for most of the course.
Do yourself a favour and avoid this prof. Engages class by standing at front staring and reading her notes, rarely looks up boring. Test questions poorly written; multiple interpretations but only one right answer. Intimidates students who ask questions in class. Requires private office visits and then forgets what she tells you.
Took LING 100A first year, and it was one of the worst classes I ever took. Rude, insipid professor. Exams and test questions could be interpreted in several ways but there was only one right answer to her. When confronted about possible solutions or questions she was defensive and unhelpful. I would suggest not to take this course with this prof.
I tried to take LING 100A w/ Judith but dropped it by how awful of a professor she is. She gave me hard time about my accommodations I have through CAL. We weren't allowed laptops to take notes. Note taking by hand is extremely difficult for me (no note takers avail). I had to drop 3 courses in 2nd term b/c of her & now have an extra year of degree
CONS: Every class Judith would read off slides that contained information that could be found in our textbooks. -Sometimes her responses to questions can make one feel dumb or disrespected but I don't think she means any harm PROS: LING100B was not difficult. Very fair tests and assignments.
A difficult class but I learnt a lot. She's passionate and knowledgeable about grammar, the thing is she can appear grumpy and make u feel dumb when u ask a question but she's actually pretty nice. The tests were difficult if you find the class difficult but cover content and exercises from in class and the textbook.
This course didn't have any structure at all. Using the textbook is essential to succeed. There were few prepared power points so it was taught verbally. However, Judith gave out great summaries of what to prepare for exams which made it easy to study. Tests and grading were VERY fair. I really recommend Judith despite everything else being said.
With Judith teaching you nearly fall asleep, she does not make her classes exciting and reads off of the slides which is literally straight from the book. Only reason I always ended up going to class was because everyday she does Iclicker questions.
Judith acts like she couldn't care less about what she's teaching, she's so monotone and dry its funny. When people ask questions she also seems very condescending, but I don't think she means to be, its just her vibe. You aren't allowed laptops or phones and you can't take pictures of anything, I'm surprised we didn't have to sign a NDA.
The class was interesting, she goes through slides quickly but as long as you pay attention youll be fine. Seems kinda grumpy at first but genuinely wants us to succeed. In-class exercises really helped my understanding.
ONLINE: The amount of new content you're required to learn is overwhelming at first. The slides she uploads every week are not very detailed and there is no synchronous classes you're required to attend so I ended up relying heavily on the textbook. Optional Zoom sessions on Fridays to go over exercises. Overall easy course.
Took this class during the first full semester during the pandemic so it was all online. I actually didn't really feel like Nylvek played any active part in my learning. It was a very much teach yourself type of class (text, slide pdf.'s, etc.) which for this type of course wasn't too bad, I think.
Yikes. This semester was entirely online and this course was asynchronous. The only "lecture" content she provided was a pdf. version of her slides - no voice over or explanations. The rest was reading 100's of pages from 3 different books. I pretty much taught myself. Quiz q's also ambiguous.
Class was asynchronous. Judith isn't very personable so it is hard to communicate with her, I mainly asked the TAs for help. You can tell she has the best intentions, so maybe communication would be better in-person. The course itself is enjoyable and has its ups (morphology and syntax) and downs (phonetics).
I took this course as an easy A, which is true. But I entirely taught myself this course. It seems like the online format is not suitable for her and she only really posted (horrible) slides and gave us textbook readings with the occasional 5 minute video and an optional Friday zoom session that isnt anything you cant do yourself.
Asynchronous with optional Zoom meetings. She posts weekly material (slides, video recordings showing how to diagram different structures, additional readings). Grammar can be difficult no matter who your prof is... either you get it or you don't :)
