worst math class i have yet to take, she wan't helpful
She's willing to help the sincere but won't take BS from the lazy.
She's easy to follow and very helpful
makes calculus understandable
She's tough, but makes Calculus seem a little more simple
Nice lady
ininterested in students or material, unhelpful, rude
Hard class, very nice lady and willing to help you if you really want to learn
SOOO hard to understand! Very unclear; teaches material too fast; avoid!!
Nice lady. Sometimes goes over material too quickly. Will help if you ask.
Impossible, do not get her!
I thought she explained things well. I would take her again.
goes too fast and gives long and hard exams
Hard, not easy to understand
Couldn't care less about anyone or anything, does give some extra credit
explains problems well, gives extra credit oppurtunities
teaches the material fairly well, but sometimes quickly; gives bonus points alot
She sucks, too fast, boring, AVOID
Too fast
plan on many hours in math lab, way too fast, tests are hard long and tricky
Goes fast, ask questions and she will help, tests are very hard so study
She's hard but helpful. You definately have to learn the material to get an A.
Easy class, but I had taken Calc. before, she cant always answer your questions
She goes through Calc. like a Bat outa hell....she need to slow down
so easy, adding and subtracting is always fun to learn, lol
study everything for the tests, lots of bonus points available, will help you
teaches too fast, doesn't explain much, especially in office hours
If you are one of the slackers like me who took calc in high school and now have to take it again, take this woman. I went to half of the classes and still had over a 100% average. If you haven't taken calculus...avoid. She doesn't teach much.
teaches REALLY fast! I've had calc before & it's still tough... Expects you to know it all really well!
HARD HARD HARD...have to study alot. Moves way to fast for someone that hasn't taken Calc. Avoid

even if i had gotten a 100 on the final i wouldnt have passed. shes way too hard, and moves way to fast if youve never had calc and arent a good math person. AVOID! ITS AWFUL!
worst class ever. she is EVIL
unclear in much of her teaching. hard class. would not recommend.
this class+Phillippi=THE DEVIL! She teaches really quickly, is pretty unclear, and makes even what used to be simple difficult. STAY AWAY!
If you go to class and do you homework she is easy, I don't know what everyone else is talking about, the tests are common sense but half the class still manages to fail
Did well in high school calculus but really struggled with this teacher. She expects you to remember everything you ever learned about math in order to get through her class. She acts like all college students are just slackers. Dropped the course.
This lady is ridiculous she is not a good teacher and her tests are hard. She is very unforgiving wish I would have not taken the class.
She's a good teacher, sometimes fast, just participate and do the homework and you should be fine. The tests are common sense, and the work is easy if you've passed 7th and 8th grade math.
no, daily quiz, hauls ass through everything, nonono. classic math teacher
Hardest teacher ever. She is riciculously unfair as well. Hard hard tests and moves way to fast in class. I dropped and would not suggest her to my worst enemy.
She requires you to do alot of work out of class and moves rather quickly. Confusing material but isnt impossible.
She changed her teaching style part way though and sometimes her assignments change, so check blackboard frequently. She offers extra-credit in some cases, so if you don't do well, jump on it...lots of work... not toooo hard.. but confusing
She is not hard at alllll......as long as you put one second of effort into things you will do completely fine...you just can't not do anything...she gives tons of opportunity to make a lot of extra points and truly wants everyone to do well
She's a nice woman but she rushes through material way too fast. It seems like she just wants to get everything done regardless of your understanding. People would look around in dismay because she didnt explain everything. AVIOD AT ALL COSTS
im really upset peole are saying they love her when most of you guys are in 107, for 205 she was hard as crap and all she ever cared about was going over material at the racing speed of light. go to her office hours, she seems to be more jolly there
Lightning fast pace. Daily quizzes are based on homework. Hard exams. If you do the homework every day, you'll do fine. Very helpful during office hours. Harder than other calc teachers(70 problem final?! come on.)

Great teacher. She is always will to help you if you don't understand something. It's basic math so it should be that hard. I got an A by doing all the homework and making flashcards to study for the tests. Easy if you passed 7th or 8th grade math!
THE CLASS IS NOT THAT EASY, AND YOU HAVE TO COME EVERY DAY CAUSE SHE TAKES ATTENDANCE BUT SHE IS EXTREMELY HELPFUL DURING OFFICE HOURS STUDY HARD FOR THE TESTS AND YOU'LL BE FINE
really good teacher, straight forward, follows the book, tests are no surprise, but quizes everyday so go to class
Great teacher. In the begining, it seems like your going to fail. But, she does test corrections sometimes, and 4 attempts at the basic skills test. She gives extra points in the end. Realy helpful for teaching math, best IDLS methods class ever.
goes very quickly but ask her to slow down and she will.she makes you feel like youre in first grade again but thats what class youre in.she's very helpful if you go to her, do the homework and know your stuff bc she gives daily quizzes. very nice lady!
Horrible teacher. Allows no make up work and is very short with the students. She goes extremely fast over the material and her accent on certain words (multiplication and fifth for example) is almost unbearable. Avoid.
The class is hard, but she's really helpful.
sometimes she goes fast, but ask her to slow down and she will. i always felt a little stupid in that class b/c its stuff you learned in elem school but she makes it sound so difficult that you feel dumb
this course SHOULD be easy, however she makes it so hard. talks way too fast, gives quizes the day you learn the material! really dont recommend her. avoid if you can
She doesn't have a good teaching style. Kind of hard to follow, and her grading sometimes does not make sense. I reccomend not taking her if you can avoid it.
She's very clear in class and i understood everything when i was sitting there, but when it came to the tests i got everything wrong. she makes you think you know what you're doing and then you fail the test. i had to switch out cuz my grade was so low and i changed my major.
Hard to understand even though class is on and easy subject. I understood stuff until she talked about it. Very nice lady, talks fast, daily quizzes but no attendence, gives extra points at the end which you really need! Try to avoid if you can.
Barely passed, yet went to every single class, took good notes, asked questions and studied. good thing for those extra pts at the end of the semester!
just dont do it... shes so not cool
I had her for 107 so I know her style...points really help at the end of semester, she's really helpful, tests will get you but there are plenty of other things to balance it out. If you've taken her for 107, take her for 108, it becomes much easier and she's familiar with you (always helps!)
IF you study on your own each day and make note cards for the tests, it isnt that bad. The tests are difficult but they are doable, you just need to put work into it. The quizes every day are annoying because you never get a break, but she does give you extra points at the end of the semester!
this material should not be any harder than it was when we did it in the 4th grade, but she seems to take some sort of satisfaction in making you feel like you never should have even passed it back then. unless you have had her before, you will spend atleast half the year learning her teaching style
Goes very fast, makes the subject matter way harder than it should be. Occasionally makes you do problems in front of the class, and i truly believe she enjoys humiliating you.Not good at explaining things even if you go to her office. Final is cumulative and is an extremely hard grader.get out now
I had her for 107, so I knew what to expect, if you had her first semester take her the next you'll know what to do! Umm stuff is kinda tough, but extra quizzes = LOTS of extra points! Final was tough, but I still pulled a B+ for the semester =)
She is a hard grader, there where times when i would get the problems right but still not get credit because they were not done the way she wanted, too picky of a grader. goes way to fast, makes the class way harder than it should be , not good at explaining things. she is the worst prof. i have ever had when it comes to explaining things. get out
wow, she really knows how to make 3rd grade math tricky and confusing. Ide say dont take her if you can help it, but if ur IDLS major, ur basically screwed for 2 semesters having her. Learn to kiss @ss and do what she says, it will make ur life much easier.
super easy material. go to class because there are quizzes that you cannot make up. really boring, no extremely boring teacher however.
Took this course over the summer in four weeks--which I think made it easier. She does go very fast and I think she does try to humiliate you in front of the class. She has a problem giving perfect scores (at least my class thought so). Not so bad though, I'm used to her now so I'm taking her for 108.
Does not care about her students.
Had her both semesters, sooo evil during class, but if you go to her office she is actually really helpful. She tries to make you look like an idiot in front of the whole class, and never will you have the right answer.
She is a really good teacher. Explains everything very clearly. As long as you do the work, pay attention in class, and ask questions you will have no problem.
I HATE THIS TEACHER AND HER CLASS!!! do not take her...she is scatter brained and you basically have to teach yourself. she will not explain anything to you so you either have to teach yourself or go to her office hours. i would NEVER EVER recommend her!
Ive had her for 107 and 108, both sucked terribly. Group work is easy points. Her tests are often confusing. I thought I knew material well and got D's on her tests. Very picky. Doesnt have convient office hours. Will not give students a break when borderline. Takes attendance daily. Go 2 class! Or ur F%#ked!
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. I have always beeen good at math, and my previous knowledge is the only thing that saved me. She doesn't explain anything, and is extremely rude when you ask questions. DO NOT take her!
worst teacher of my life period. do not take her she makes fun of students, is unhelpful, and grades hard. Makes the subject so much harder than it should be. Save your gpa. get out now!
she is great! i had her for 107 and 108 and she actually taught us. she goes fast and you have a quiz a day but that pads your grade. people who don't like her or think she is hard are probably not trying very hard, because she really is a good teacher who tries to help. after having kidd, phillippi is amazing.
She cannot teach, and she is mean, and rude to her students. You can study all night for her test, and not pass the next day because she puts random stuff on it. I wouldn't recommend her at all.
The WORST teacher I have ever had. She makes simple math seem impossible. Her goal is to make you feel stupid. She presents information in the beginning of class and then quizzes you on it. My grandpa died and I had to go home (6 hrs away) for the funeral. She would not let me take a 20pt quiz early or make it up. VERY UNREASONABLE!
She is the most picky, worst teacher you will ever have. If there are ANY other options for 107 and 108, TAKE THEM. She is HORRIBLE
A lot of people find her picky, but I've had her for two semesters and I don't think she's bad at all. Do the work; a graded assignment every class. There are a lot of chances for points. I would definitely recommend her.
by far THE WORST teacher I have ever had at JMU. DO NOT TAKE HER FOR 107. She is very hard, picky and she loves to make you feel really stupid. I dropped her class and THANK GOD..shes a real B****.

She is TERRIBLE. Take my advice, read the material before hand and ZONE OUT during class. If you already understand the material don't listen to a word she says, she is the most confusing teacher EVER. She is extremely picky about how she grades and makes you feel stupid when you ask questions. Do NOT take her if you have a hard time with this math
I will recommend that you not take this women. She puts students down and like to tell students how aweful they did on quizzes and test, but never encourages you. As future teachers, we need good examples that are going to help us in becoming a teacher. She is picky, rude, and lazy. PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW YOUR GPA TO BE DESTROYED FOR THIS GOOD ADVICE
The most important thing to know is that you can't use calculators in this class. In the beginning of the semester you have to take a basic skills quiz worth a lot of your grade so make sure you know basic math!!! A lot of independent learning. The only thing that keeps you coming to class are the quizzes and group work.
worst prof. I have ever had in my life. Does not help you at all! She gets frustrated when you ask her questions and treats you like you are stupid for even having a question to begin with. I cant believe the university lets this woman teach mathematics. Absolute worst teacher I have ever seen . Save your GPA get out now while you can.
Phillippi is not a bad teacher. She is willing to help if you don't understand something, all you have to do is ask!
Had for both Math 107 & 108. I got an A on just about everything. Two tests, a final, and a group presentation teaching one lesson. Gives quizzes or group work daily (easy). MUST do homework, graded assignments, & come to class to get a good grade. Is very helpful in office hours if needed. Has built in points in case you do miss a class. Recommend
I really liked taking her class. I am in 108 with a horrible professor now and wish that i had taken her again. her class is fair, and you learn alot. if you go to class and stay on top of homework youll do fine. she offers alot of extra points at the end of the semester that brings up your grade alot!
She's really not as bad as everyone makes her seem. There are a lot of quizzes and group work to boost your grade. She grades kind of hard on tests but there are only 2 and a final. She's willing to help but always wants you to try to find the answers yourself beforehand. She'll pinpoint you in class if you get on her bad side, so avoid that.
Really easy class. Lots of short quizzes and group work to help your grade. A little studying is required, but not much. Teacher can kind of make you feel dumb a times for asking questions.
I really like Professor Phillippi. She is very helpful and clear in what she expects. She relies very heavily on the textbook and spends most of each class discussing the sections she asked you to complete as hw. Daily group work boosts your grade and she drops your two lowest quiz scores. Take the time to talk and get to know her and she won't see
Professor Phillippi is a good teacher. She cares turning her students into effective teachers rather than just letting them get an A without working for it. I got an A in 107 and 108 with her and I was not an A student in high school math, so it's not hard. Just keep up with the work and ask her questions and you'll do fine.
I personally don't like her teaching style. She goes very fast and is very picky about how you answer questions. Some people like her and some don't I guess it depends. She is better then some of the math teachers but there are others that are better than her.
Good teacher. Her teaching style is different from most and she cares about how her students do. She picks out people to answer random questions, but I personally liked this because it made me pay attention. Group work and quizzes to help boost your grade. She's very picky about answers on tests, but overall this was a great class and I learned a l
Judith is a interesting lady, she tries to help you, but often times confuses you more than helps you.You will have an outrageous amount of home at least 3-4 hours a night and tests are killer.I missed one class and have a D right now. This class is really hard and she grades based on right answers even though she says she won't.
GO TO CLASS. She covers a ton of material and talks a million miles a minute, but she will also help you out if you're struggling. Very nice lady, but if you're not good at math, you're probably not going to get a very good grade. Group work will help boost your grade.
I cant believe she doesnt have a frowny face.my WORST professor so far.bashes teachers and complains about ones that cant teach when she herself cant teach.SO much homework.takes off for every little thing.never gets through her lesson plan.scatter brained.she was my only b this semester.
BEWARE: WORST TEACHER I EVER HAD!!! This woman has no businesses trying to tell students in the education department how to teach math to children. I never felt comfortable asking her questions in class because she always shot students down when the answer wasn't what she wanted. Insane amount of homework and incredibly hard tests. DON'T DO IT!
I had Phillipi for 107 and 108 & am not sure why people disliked her. I enjoyed her as a teacher, she has a strong personality and knows how to teach. She had good examples and group work was a plus. She was always in her office to help out & tests were fair and covered material we went over in class. I would definitely recommend her!
Easy class. Great teacher. She goes fast, but it's elementary school math-how slow do you want her to go? She tells you everything you need to know very clearly and gives great examples about how to teach your future students. The tests and quizzes are very fair-nothing unexpected.
Worst grade I've ever received in school. Her tests were extremely hard and the final was insanely hard. She's a nicer version of Ford, but it's mainly just the work that's really hard.
Professor Phillippi is definitely not the best teacher in the world but she isn't as awful as everyone says. Her tests are incredibly difficult but if you go to her office hours she is very very helpful and so is her grad assistant. It's not impossible just takes a lot of focus and effort.
this is a difficult class, there is just no way around that. Phillippi is not the best math teacher ever, but not the worst either. Tests are hard but she gives a decent amount of group work in class that can help boost your grade.
She is not awful at all!!! She is soo helpful if you go to her office hours and ask questions in class. She wants you to do well. You kinda teach yourself the material (homework) then ask questions in class. The material in general is challenging so that is why her test are hard. She gives Exit Problems and checked homework to boost your grade.
People get the difficulty of this class confused with the effectiveness of the teacher. She really teaches this topics in the clearest way possible, the class itself just goes against everything taught in elementary school. So for the class she teaches, she does it well. The class itself, is challenging.
She is a tough teacher, but I have definitely learned A LOT from her! It is definitely not an easy class, but she is not as bad as people make her sound. There are lots of graded assignments, and homework is pretty much mandatory! Always read the book when she assigns it!
This class was very challenging and it was very hard to get a good grade. The tests were very difficult and many of the quizzes were on information we had never seen before. If math is not your strong point then it will be a struggle to do well in the class. She also goes very fast and is not always clear.
DO NOT TAKE HER! She moves extremely quickly in class. When you ask her questions in class or during her office hours she makes you feel stupid for not knowing the answer and is not helpful at all. Tests are impossible as well. If you do take her definitely use the student assistants!
DO NOT TAKE HER. She does not teach anything in class, yet it is mandatory. She makes you feel stupid when you ask for questions. Has horrible office hours and does not meet with you by appointment. Her tests are impossible and even when everyone fails she does not curve and blames in on the class itself not herself.
Phillippi really isn't that bad. If you get to know her and study and try your best, it's a really good class! You learn SO much from her! TAKE HER if you want to be a good teacher!
She is by far the worst teacher i have ever had. You are basically the one teaching her what to do.
I dreaded coming to class, she's not helpful, she makes you feel dumb for asking questions. No extra credit offered, two tests equal 50% of your grade and the final is 30%, DO NOT TAKE HER
I was extremely afraid to take this class after reading this site, but it was honestly nothing like I expected. She is NOT that hard. As long as you do the homework and ask questions if you're confused, you will do perfectly fine. Do not be afraid of her!!!
There's a rumor that Prof Phillippi is hard. I disagree: she has high expectations for your work because she wants us to be the best teacher you can be. This might be translated as "hard" if you don't put in the work or you don't ask questions. I would definitely recommend her. You will learn a whole lot and it will change your perspective on math.
She is thorough and has a good pacing to her lessons. Lots of hands on geometry activities. Gives frustrating exit problems and 3 hard tests. Good luck. If you put in effort on homework and ask questions, you will do adequate.
If you do the work and keep up and ask questions, you will be fine. Just don't go into the class thinking "oh this will be easy" and blow it off, because then you won't do well. Go to office hours and ask the student teachers for help and you will honestly be fine, especially if you have a good grasp on math already.
Before taking this class, just know that Math 107 is NOT an easy class. Phillipi has an interesting personality that takes a lot of time to get used to. She is really condescending, but if you do your homework and go to class you will do alright. Just don't think the class will be easy.
Hard class, great teacher. She is clear about what she wants you to do & what's on tests, you just have to put in a lot of work in order to be able to do it. Go to every class & prioritize it from day 1. If you want to be a good math teacher, take her. She may seem harsh at first but she's a really nice lady (and she brings candy to the final)
She is a good Professor although her class is very challenging. Expect lots of exit quizzes.
Phillippi was a decent professor and made sure that if you had a question it was answered as best she could in class. Her Student Assistants all knew what they were talking about and were ready to help and had great hours. Phillippi makes conversation out of the class and helps the class learn from other mistakes.
I put that she's a tough grader but here's why- it's not that she's actually tough on anything and she doesn't even check homework even though it's assigned every night. But on tests and graded assignments she will take off on very petty things like not being specific enough, being too specific, or showing too much work.
I really loved her as a professor for this class. She was very clear on what she wanted from her students and how she wanted work to be presented to her. She gave exit problems every once in a while, sometimes with a partner. Also gives graded homework too. There's a lot of opportunity to do well in her class.
