This was Judiths first year back at a university. I had taken a human sexuality class at Palomar and it was the funnest class I had taken. This human sexuality class is quite borning and mostly lecture based. Interesting information. The writings are pretty easy and there are only 2 tests. Pay attention and study and you will get a good grade.
I was looking forward to this class turned out to be soooooo boring. The professor did not make the material interesting when it could have stimulated the mind so much. BLAH BLAH BLAH thats all Judith Phillips gets.
This class is easy, but looong. She goes offon tangents that aren't relevant and she makes you do lots of group work. She treats you like a child in elementary school and she has you do projects like drawing a toy and coloring it with crayolas. This class was a waste of my time.
She is very nice ans I really liked the pictures of her grandkids (she's a proud grandma). Class went a little too slow though. Too much explanation on siple concepts.
I adore this professor! She is so sweet and kind. Her expectations are extremely clear, and she is very patient and open. Her class is easy and you will learn. Go to class!
Nice teacher, hard on grading papers. Very picky. Tests are whatever. Go to class and write good notes on the power points.
Very nice, caring teacher.Tests(2)are off lectures so dont miss class.Doesnt post powerpoint slides on webct. Intersting articles to read, lead one class discussion.1 research paper & poster due.Gives checklist/study guide so you know exactly what she wants. In class papers CANT be made up worth lots of points. Interesting class very enjoyable.Got B.
She is a pretty good teacher. She understands the class material very well and is very good at explaining it. She is a decent grader, although she can be strict.
great teacher-good and clear lectures. Easy papers and if you take good notes from the powerpoint you will do good on your tests. She covers some vey interesting topics and ideas. Always in a good mood and is very encouraging if you talk with her outside of class.
Attendance is mandatory. No talking in class or she will call you out in front of EVERYONE. Test questions are a little confusing. Be on her good side and she will love you
I agree that Dr. Phillips is a nice person and the course content is not difficult at all. However, she has VERY specific technical guidelines for the papers and if they are not followed exactly she will make you down a lot. I found her to be rather unapproachable about discussing grades and papers as well.
Amazing teacher. Power points are really easy to read. Do some of the readings, and study what is on the study guide. You should do fine. Total Sweet Heart
she is just precious! her lectures are not that great, but there is some interesting information on it. her project is pretty easy and interesting if you get a good lot. overall this class was good and easy.
She is a very nice person. Her tests are ridiculously hard. Go to class and you should be okay on the tests. She grades the child observations hard and there's not much work in her class.
I've taken 3 of her classes s far, she is wonderful! She expects you to know your stuff and be prepared but she is ALWAYS available to provide you with whatever help you need to be prepared and sucessful. Her tests are easy and there are always extra credit opps. Expect to put in the time for projects. Lectures are interesting (ppt, plus comments)
She is an extremely nice person. Her class was rather easy 4 exams, 2 observation papers and a research group project. The exams are difficult: read, study, and do the study guides. The papers: she grades those hard, be specific. Research project: piece of cake.
The class was good. Attendance isn't required and shes very fun and helpful. Theres only one big assignment, and she stresses that you should start it early, but I was able to do the whole thing the day before it was due and still got an A. Definitely take her class.
Amazing, thourogh, and beyond helpful. She has a high expectation, but only because she provides the support and motivation to ensure you are capable of doing well. She never gives up on her students and we always walked away from class understanding the material. You can ask her anything about human development and she will never embaress you for asking. Exams are application oriented, pay very close attention to examples she uses in lecture and you'll do great on exams.
I was excited for this class, but after a week I was tired of it. Her lectures are pretty boring, but needed to do well on tests. I studied my notes, her lectures, and the book and never got higher than an 86 on a test. I worked my butt off for the big essay for her class and only got a 72. She also seemed to pick favorites with students.
Great class- not too hard, and the project and writing activities are good practice for APA papers and fun to do. Most of the questions on the tests are applied theories directly from notes- attendence is not required, but helpful for the tests. As long as you are a good writer and study your notes, you will do well without too much effort.
Need to go to class because not everything is on her lectures. Everything she lectures on will the on the exams. One big paper/project which is pretty easy but really crazy about APA. Only downside is she doesnt know anything outside of whats in the book. She always has to say I dont know, I'll have to look that up about something interesting.
she is terrible. class is so damn boring. loves to shatter your hopes and dreams with quotes like "when your mom or dad dies it is the worst pain you can imagine" or "if your a senior don't even try to get into graduate school, its too late." this is all coming from an old ass who has a degree from australia. get out of here with that crap
DO NOT TAKE HER! She seems decent at first but it's a lie! The other 330 teachers are so much better. Idk why people rated her so high. She randomly took down ppts halfway through the semester because she thought the were "distracting"....Very unhelpful. She automatically thinks all her students are in the wrong.
Boring, APA crazy, arrogant, thinks she knows it all, response to every question is "good question, i'll have to look it up and let you know"..ENOUGH SAID!!! Don't take her!
if you take her class make sure you get ALL of your papers prof read more than one before turning it in. she was an alright professor lectures can sometimes get a little bit dry and be sure you follow APA to the tee
I thought psychology was supposed to be fun!! But her class is pretty boring. Not hard at all but just soooo boring. All power points and worksheets and tests nothing special
I was so excited to take this class but did not like her way of teaching it at all. Cared more about perfect APA then knowing the material on papers. No discussion, no one even wanted to raise their hands because she would always say NO to everyones answers, didnt seem to know some of the material very well at times.
Very informative and nice. She is a great public speaker. Be very specific with the papers she assigns. She gives very explicit instructions as to how to do them.
Yes it was a little boring, but cannot complain. She was very clear on her expectations. One assignment or test a month, so the workload was doable. A lot of information, but most is common sense. Do need to study for exams. Lectures directly from text, so attendance is not mandatory.
Overall the class was decent. Lecture notes are all drawn from the book. I opened my book probably 3 or 4 times throughout the semester. Test questions are all MC taken from the lecture notes. There's surprise response papers 3/4 of a page so going to class isn't mandatory, but to get all the points you should. There's only 2 papers; generally easy
pretty boring class but a nice professor. her tests are basically what was in the notes and quizzes, and she has surprise response papers that have to be 3/4 of a page.
Very interesting class. Rarely read the book since most of the tests are based on lectures. 4 tests, 1 essay, & 1 final. Very doable but slightly boring since the lectures can take up the whole class time period. I would definitely take notes on power points since it can be extremely helpful in understanding the course material.
This professor is a traditional, old-school professor. She is tough and precise, but very good. This is my last semester and this is the class I've learned the most in. I wish I could take her for other PSYC courses. Almost all test questions come from lectures - attend class to pass and listen to every single instruction she gives on papers.
She is old fashion lady. If you speak she will take away points. There is absolutely no talking or any electronics, she will call you out. All her power points are directly from the book, so the book is only necessary when studying, but all the notes will be the tests. Go to class if you wanna pass. Great professor, knows what she is teaching.
While I completely respect Dr. Philips' ambition, I'm not sure she shares the same caliber of expertise as the rest of the CSUSM psych professors. She's endearing & funny at times, but I think she may be out of touch with some of the material. I wasn't convinced she knew much more than I did on the topic. Fine class overall, but I was underwhelmed.
Judith is really nice and approachable! Her grading is a bit tough, even when asking your opinion on a homework assignment she won't give you full credit. Attendance is mandatory for your grade. Does not make her own exams so make sure you study slides and book!
SUPER EASY. Go to class, she has random in class assignments reflecting on lectures and it offers EC opportunity at the end of semester. Her exams are all in her lectures, does not post on CC so don't depend on that. Very few assignments out of class, very simple papers. Overall great class, she adds personal stories to help with concepts as well.
She's a strict grader although it would seem otherwise. Her grading criteria is unclear which creates lower grades.
She doesn't really add anything beyond the textbook. This class could be taken online if she didn't take attendance.
Papers are pretty easy. Tests are based on the notes. Notes are pretty much straight out of the book. Takes attendance. No electronics. Meet with her during office hours for extra help.
She is not the greatest professor! She will take it out on the whole class if she catches someone on their phone. Tough grader, she is there to discipline rather than to teach. She can definitely have favorites in the class.
She is a really good lecturer and her expectations for exams are clear. My only complaint was her grading on the papers... She can be very tough, outspoken, and and can come across as rude. Other than her strict grading I enjoyed the class. But be prepared to work for your grade!
She doesn't like cell phones, she will call you out in front of the entire class if she catches you looking at it. She also doesn't like hearing anyone's voice but her own. Fairly easy class if you take notes on her lectures, she does not post her lecture slides online.
This class should be online. You must go to class as she does not post the power points on Cougar Courses. The power points are dry for being a personality class! I corrected a question on the test and did not get the point for it. You must meet with her during office hours to see how you performed on the test to see what you got wrong.
I don't hate her. She's boring as hell though and no Fitzpatrick. Literally relearning everything I learned in Psych 331. Doesn't post lectures on CC, but if you took any CHAD classes before and Biopsyc, you'll be okay. I recommend taking this class AFTER you've taken everything as an Easy A refresher or before as a detailed intro. Book use: eh
For her writing assignments make sure to follow the directions to a T. There are 3 exams. Make sure that you know your notes and can apply the concepts because that is what you will be tested on. There is one oral presentation, but it's fairly simple.
She is a sweet professor overall but she does not specify what she wants in her papers you have to write and she is a super strict grader. You have to go to every class to get the powerpoint because she doesn't post them. I would recommend her because of her sweet personality but it definitely isn't an easy A.
Dr. Phillips is a very nice lady. However, I would note recommend this class with her. She takes attendance randomly about 5 times which is 10% of your grade. Her lectures are catered to the book so it seems dry & she gives very vague instructions for the 100pt paper. Her tests are pretty clear but there are some ?s completely out of left field :)
She was always very clear with instructions as she wanted everyone to succeed. Make sure to go to office hours if you are confused about anything, she will literally show you exactly what she wants on assignments so you can do great. Slides are what test are made up of along with some things in book. DON'T USE YOUR PHONE IN CLASS. Shes adorable!
I have had Dr. Phillips for 2 online psyc classes, and, most recently, an actual class with her. She is extremely knowledgeable, informative, and witty. She is firm but fair, caring and inspiring. As an older student, Dr. Phillips provided me with inspiration to not worry about my age, and keep focused on my goal. I learned a lot from her.
Lots of note-taking, so if you like to miss class... this is NOT for you. The notes are not on Cougar Courses. Exams are mostly out of notes, so take very detailed notes about the examples she uses. Great professor!
Professor Phillips was great! You DO have to attend every class so you get all your notes to study for the exam-never used the book. BUT you should always attend class anyways. Easy A, just have to study your lecture notes and make sure you literally follow/answer all questions for writing assignments. GREAT Professor! learned a lot!
There is a "quick write" every class that you get credit for, you can only miss 3 of the quickwrites without a penalty against your grade. There is only 1 midterm and 1 final exam (not cumulative) but no study guide. Online quizzes every chapter that are unlimited time & open book. One observation and analysis paper. Extra credit is offered.
Nice professor. You write a total of 28 "quick writes" in each class and can miss 5 without penalty. Two exams: one midterm and one final, which is not cumulative. She doesn't give study guides or put powerpoints online, so if you miss a class, ask a colleague or go to office hours. Also, one observation/analysis paper.
She is a sweet lady! She has powerpoints, but doesnt post them online, so make sure you go to class to get them bc you need them for tests. Dont really need the book tbh. There are in-class individual & group quickwrites. (2) short reflections, 1 big paper, 3 tests, no final. Her writing assignments have specific word counts. Would take her again
Professor Phillips is a very respected individual. If you like to be distracted by your phone, laptop, or side conversations... good luck, you WILL get called out (either way, you shouldn't be disrespectful in the first place). Her lectures are not posted online, so you have to go to class or get the notes. Tough grader, but such a great professor.
At first I thought I would enjoy this teacher because she was such a charming old lady. But nothing is clear in her class. So much grey area when it comes to the test. A portion of my class didnt attend the final cause they didnt have to points to pass. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Tough Grader on paper BORING Mandatory Quick Writes A student Received a C
Dr. Phillips is pretty straight forward about what is to be on each of her exams (all applicational). Attend class, participate, study her lectures and you will pass. She is a pretty reasonable professor and very sweet. Students just need to stop whining shes a terrible professor just because she makes you think. Deal with it.
Hard class, mandatory in class quick writes, no study guides, doesnt post PowerPoints online, and online quizzes. One midterm and a final and an analysis/observation paper. Dont talk in class or shell call you out on it, dont miss class or youll lose points and miss the notes. There was so much to study for the exams, intimidating woman!
in class quick writes, 2 tests, 15 online quizzes, and a paper. she doesnt post the powerpoints online, so you have to go to class. there are no study guides for the tests, but you should study off of your notes and the online quizzes. class material is interesting, but she makes it boring. if you can take this class with another professor, do it.
Subjective/TOUGH grader. The type of prof that finds ways to force attendance which is ironic because coming to this class is SO boring. Lectures are 100% book based. NO STUDY GUIDES FOR TESTS and questions on tests are confusing application questions rather than definitions. Honestly, so unnecessarily hard for such an easy subject. Avoid if u can.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Shes not very helpful when it comes to students success in the class. Lectures are boring and and will call you out if youre talking or on your phone. No study guide or pp to look back over for exams
if you want to have a class thats graded on 3 exams and a paper, with no study guide, be my guest. Shes very knowledgeable but unreasonable when it comes to access to the material YOU HAVE TO BE IN CLASS. If you miss one day, youll be far behind
Professor Phillips is a nice lady but her class is difficult to get a good grade in even if you are a good student. She does not give any study guides and even when studying her lecture slides (she doesnt post) it did not help on the exams. Our class average on exams were always 70% and below and she still did not change anything. Don't take her.
The key is to not miss class for both the quick writes and notes. If you do, go to her office hours and take notes because she doesn't post them online and you really need them for the tests. As long as you write down everything and pay attention, Psych 210 is easy with her. Her test questions are all from the notes and quizzes.
This class and professor is overall passable. She does not provide lectures online, but if you show up and do the work in class, you should get the grade you deserve. Lecture is a bit dry sometimes, but she does include lots of personal stories that help you remember terms. Also, you could probably get by without the textbook.
I've had prof. Phillips before &took her class again I suppose hoping for a change and there was none. She lectures for all 3 hours when she could cover it all in 1. She incessantly complains about being a professor and how she "could" retire but won't. took WEEKS to grade our papers, & there are only 5 things in the grade book. Cant wait to gra
She was a good teacher. Very organized, easy to follow along. One quiz every week on the each of the chapters online, and write ups after every class. 2 exams all semester, do all the quizzes, write ups, and you should be fine. Attendance isn't mandatory, but its best to go because you can fall behind.
Judith is EXTREMELY particular and picky about her 1 paper. Measures length with a ruler and will take points off for paragraphs being too long or too short. Must be in class for quick writes. Tests are very wordy and she seems confused on why people struggle on them. Super nice and her class is interesting but extremely particular. Go to OHrs
She is a nice lady however her lectures are very boring. Her tests are difficult because they are super wordy! She did not grade the one assignment she had us do. I am about to take the final test and I still do not know my grades which is giving me more anxiety. I would not take her again!
Honestly, I felt like Professor Phillips was pretty passive aggressive and sometimes rude to students who just had questions. It was really upsetting to me. Not to mention she took about three months to grade our big paper and then gave out pretty low scores because "no one did the prompt right" for a pretty confusing assignment.
Professor Phillips is the worst professor Ive had at CSUSM. She doesnt upload any powerpoints and the ones she shows in class are unclear and we will spend an hour on one slide going off top. extremely hard to take notes on. Tests are confusing and worded strange. No study guides provided and an EXTREMELY picky term paper 4weeks to grade.
Don't take her class! No power point, no study guide, 3 dominate term exam and very very picky on the only one term paper.
whole class500 pts 1paper100pts In class assign.100pts 3exams300 pts Tests are written in a way that makes them diff. She said she would avg the exams4everyone on the 2nd exam since most students did so poorly, but@the end of the semester she changed her mind&said it wouldnt make much of a diff anyway. Im 4.0student&got a B, dnt recomend
It was her first time teaching history of psych and it was very clear. Anytime a student had a question about the class or assignments she would say she has to ask the professor who teaches the class, It felt like substitute teaching. The quizzes all together are worth more than 1 exam and there was 16 quizzes, so almost every class. It was awful.
I would not recommend this professor to anybody. Her exams are the worse I don't understand how this class was so difficult. When I enrolled I thought this would be my easy class since I was taking upper division labs, those were much easier than this class. The professor needs to rethink her teaching method, everyone was worried about their grade.
Judith is a great professor. She is very clear about what she expects and is very available in her office hours.
Very hard class but Pro. Phillips is an amazing professor. All of her exams are based on the lecture notes and assigned readings. She does not post the lecture slides online, so you have to go to each class to get the notes. There are weekly quizzes on the readings but they are easy if you do the reading. There are two papers, 1250 words each.
Would not recommend this professor. She would often single out students and this made the classroom environment uncomfortable. Exams are difficult. Often worded in an odd way. There is 1 paper due in the middle of the semester, but its not graded till finals.
Dr. Phillips is not a very good professor for PSYC 490 (history). She is a very tough grader and isnt clear what she wants done for the papers. She gives so many quizzes throughout the semester and her questions are worded strange.
TAKE PHILLIPS OVER WILLIAMS!! Tests are based on the lectures. Come to class, copy the slides, and you will pass with at least a C. Tests are curved which helps. Essays are really hard, but not weighted as strongly as the exams, so I only went from an A to an A-. Gives extra credit on quizzes and class assignments!! Stays after class with students.
Judith is a fantastic teacher and she is passionate about teaching. Unlike other teachers, she will check her mistakes if students bring them up and give credit for those. She makes students work hard but in an effort to learn the material. Shes fair but has high expectations.
Professor Phillips was an outstanding communicator. Her topic material was clear, humorous and insightful. Her creative style for making an on-line class room feel real-time was brilliant. I took several classes for my degree, and found her sylabis setup relating to course materials, chapter reviews and quizzes, organized and easy to navigate.
Lectures the whole time. Test based on ALL lectures, no study guide. But some stuff on test is never covered in lectures. Extremely rude if you use phone or talk. Even if you simply have a short question for your neighbor.
Phillips is very nice but don't let that fool you! She can be tough on some students! Class is pretty straight forward. She doesn't give points for attendance but I highly recommend you don't miss class as tests come almost exclusively from her powerpoints and she does not post those on cougar courses. She's super tough with essay grading!
She is the sweetest and does care about your grade. She does not give much work and all her videos/lectures are super interesting. I would definitely take her again.
last semester I took this class, pretty straight forward and boring. No lectures, just reading and quizzes. One final paper in which is a tough grader with little instructions. Follow APA format or she will fail you
Judith is a professor and she has plenty of experience, but she lacks the ability to clearly speak and give feedback to her students. Her quizzes are easy, but her paper and other homework is graded harshly. Only take her as a last resort. She is not hard, but she is not lenient on grading. Overall she is an average teacher, but I give her less.
lectures are pretty straight forward but very long. she drags them out more than they need to be. Her grading criteria is very strict, dont expect any sympathy from her. READ READ READ, there is so much reading in this class and a discussion board every week. she grades these harshly. tests are chill if you did the reading. would not take again
Having the online format, there wasn't much if any interaction with her. The class was easy and straight forward if you read. A quiz each week based on reading, one midterm exam, a term paper, forum posts, and a final. The content was all from the book, no lectures, but the book is an easy read. Solid online class.
3 exams on 4 ch.s each(worth 60% of total grade). No notes allowed and all info is presented in Powerpoint during lecture. Miss class & you have to ask classmates or go to office hours. Class average on first exam was a C-. One big paper worth 20%, and activities. No study guides for exams. If u struggle with learning material, pick another class.
Not great. Exams are tough/specific. Very few if any EC opportunities, most in my class recieved a c. passable class but she teaches in very old school way (3 exams, one paper). in this day and age it's very outdated. Her paper is very specific but with her help you'll be fine. took 5 weeks to grade paper though. sweet lady, but by no means easy a.
Do not take her her format is 3 test and a paper if you fail one of theses you will not pass the class she is very old school and does not care if you pass her class or not. She needs to retire no one should have to go through her ever. She does not post the power points online which she tests off. Good luck if you can't read your own hand writing.
Please don't take this teacher. She is a super tough rater and the lectures are so boring. She teaches the old school and doesn't care about the students, she keeps in mind that if she misses a class, she will be way behind because she doesn't publish her lectures and if she doesn't do well on a test or paper, she will not be able. spend :/
Amazing professor! She's super sweet and I loved her lectures. She was very understanding and responsible about an exam. Study her slides and handouts they will help a lot on the exam. She's very willing to help outside of class especially for the paper. Loved her class and you can tell she loves teaching history of psych!
She is very old school. If you missed class, it will count against you. I did not appreciate this Professor degrading me when I came to her for help. She even questioned my career choice during our meeting.
