look at her? i mean.. does she look like a good professor? I think NOT!

DIFFICULT class; nothing you turn in will ever be good enough
Thought-provoking, challenging, and more than fair. I especially enjoyed her careful selection of novels for this course (Aspects of the novel).

Her class is hard, but it is challenging and rewarding. Those who don't do well cannot hold her responsible, they need to look to their own lame selves. She is quirky, zany and entertaining. Only serious students should take her classes.
This class was difficult, but I would not discourage one from taking it. Dr. Pike gave eveyone in the class the chance to excel. I loved her teaching methods and in order to excel you must go to her for help on papers and take many notes.
Her expectations are extremely high, and you won't know what they are until she tears apart draft after draft of your work. Nothing is ever good enough and her critiques can be insulting and hurtful. Several people were in tears following conferences.
This is the hardest I ever worked, but the best I've ever felt about my work. She is absolutely the smartest and most caring teacher I've yet encountered. I'd take any class she taught!
This class would be great if you were taking it merely for the experience. But this awful class is a requirement for graduation. Dr. Pike is rude, insensitive, and mean. She needs to be replaced with someone who can inspire learning, not frustration.
The worst teacher I've ever had. Not only is she eletist and pretentious, she is downright mean when it comes to commenting on your work. She constantly tries to make herself apear smart. Awful...avoid her at all costs.
hard class, must take notes on everything she says, must write like an english major, very nice and funny, knows alot about topic, excited about subject
Dificult but challenging class, bad grade was totally my fault. Knows her stuff
Extremely challenging, but very rewarding too. Dr. Pike is always available to meet and talk through ideas; she makes sure you know what you're doing. Seriously helped my academic writing.
Only serious students need apply. Yes her expectations are high and it was worth it. I learned to read and write on a whole new level!
i've never read so much in my life. grades very hard, but she is very helpful when you go to her office and get help
Dr. Pike's "Aspects of the Novel" class involed more reading than I could've ever expected. While she was nice, and a fair grader (usually) she could be a bit condescending at times.
lots of reading, unwilling to discuss main concepts in novels, more interested in off-the-wall concepts and ideas than making sure students have a solid understanding on material...rude to students, "higher than thou" attitude
way too much reading, too many assignments at once, how are we supposed to be able to read a 300 page novel and write the best essays of our lives at the same time?? she has a "holier than thou" attitude and is very condescending.
There are basically two grades given and if you don't do well on these parers you are simply out of luck. I have been an English Major for four years and have never had such a problem. She honestly believes that she is the be all of the Enslish Dept.
For her Aspects of the Novel course, she wasn't willing to fluctuate a bit to help students and she never was very clear in her directions. I advise all those who take her class to go in there prepared and heed everyone's warning.
Tough class, constant work, but a good teacher. If you try hard, and figure out what she expects early, you'll be good to go.
I wish there were more little peppers I could put next to her name.
If papers aren't written exactly how she wants them you fail. The only problem is she doesn't tell you how she wants them, you have to guess. Conferences are a joke, you can change everything she says and still fail. Horrible, elitist, avoid at all costs
very nice professor who really wants to see her students succeed. I hate doing work but it was actually interesting. Take her... she doesn't teach bs. you'll actually learn how to write well
Avoid her at all costs. Made me never want to write again. My other teacher loved all my writing, and she hated it all.
She is super mean about your papers. She won't help you...just tries to make you feel stupid.
Dr. Pike is an excellent teacher but very difficult. Do all the reading and ALWAYS talk with her before submitting a paper. She will help you but you must come to her. She can be a bit intimidating but she is truly a nice person.
I was very interested in learning what literay analysis is, but now I just want to avoid the class at all costs. She does not help you with your papers, conferences are pointless, and she makes you feel like a moron. AVOID this class
I don't know how anyone can stand Pike's class. She says she's available to help you but if you try to get a second appointment don't hold your breath! The first appointment doesn't help at all. If you take her, be ready for her to tell you your stupid.
Pike is the worst professor I have ever encountered. She made me cry and I changed my major b/c of her. She's stuck up, and treats you like you're unworthy of her instruction. She expects too much and teaches nothing. She shouldn't be a prof.
This lady is nuts. Will tell you to write differently than everyone of your previous english teachers. And don't think about participating because its her opinion over yours.
Very mean and patronizing. She talks about women and feminism a bit much, then again she does gender studies and G.O.T. Meetings with her are a joke, and I eavesdropped on her making fun of me to a collegue in the lounge beforehand.
Second rate person. Won't even begin to get into what kind of professor she is...
Horrible professor. High expectations she won't explain even after she rips your papers apart. She is highly unprofessional and routinely singles out students in class to try and make the feel stupid. She is an elitist, mean spirited, spiteful harpy.
Lit Analysis is a really difficult class, because Dr. Pike has extremely high expectations. She seems intimidating at first, but she is really willing to work/conference/talk with her students to help them improve. My writing and critical thinking skills have improved because of her.
Holier than thou attitude combined with super hard grading is a bad mix. She seems to enjoy failing people and making students feel stupid in front of the class.
Dr. Pike is a hard grader and although she claims if you come to her for help she will help you, its a lie. She will look you in the eyes and tell you, your paper is awful. What makes her even worse is that she will not tell you how to make it better. Unless you are a really strong writer, avoid her
Horrible teacher! She will tell you your writing is awful, then if you do everything she says to try and fix it, she will still fail you. Plus she is mean about it all the way. She plays favorites! Avoid her like the plague.
She is hard, but she makes you a better writer. I loved her class. I would take her again. Most people who do not like her are the ones who do not want to do the work or the reading. Tough, but worth it.
I did ALL the work and ALL the reading and no matter what she hated my writings and interpretations. Not only that, she would go out of her way to make me feel stupid in front of the class. She'd tear your papers apart and then when you'd try to fix them, she'd criticize the changes!
I love reading and I thought taking a closer look at literature would be fun. Maybe it would be if anyone else taught it. From day one she picked people who shared her interpretations and everything they said was gold, while everyone else she made out to be an idiot. She is a horrible teacher.

She is challenging and expects you to earn your grade, but will definitely help out if you ask for it. She makes herself available and is extremely approachable. As to the course, it is very straightforward and enlightening. I'd highly recommend the course.
Horrible teacher. She expects sophomores and juniors to write like professors. If your writing isn't good enough she insults you in conferences, and in front of the whole class. She tries to make people feel stupid. She may be well educated, but she cannot teach at all.
Dr. Pike inspired me to become an English teacher. She opened my mind to many different ideas and concepts and I am forever changed because of her. Thank you!

The worst professor I have ever had. Makes you feel stupid and worthless like you can't write at all. This was the first time she taught this class, and did the worst job ever. Didn't clarify anything, and didn't help when needed. I am NOT a slacker by any means and I still can't seem to do things right for her. Like someone else said, AVOID HER!!
This capstone was kind of thrown on her at the last minute, but i feel that she really tried to accomadate us. Capstones are not meant to lead you by the hand so although she was very unclear it was fine.
Capstones aren't supposed to hold your hand. However, we did NOTHING in class she told us there is no paper til the last month of class then SURPRISE- a 10pg paper. She chose our topics for us so we could research masculinity-- so she can teach a class on it. Totally useless class, made more than one student cry. Likes to make you feel stupid.
FUN class, learned more about social theories than the literature about those theories, but that was okay. She really cares about what she teaches to her students, and why. Recommended.
This was a really informative and eye-opening class. Yes, she does expect you to work and to think, but she is also willing to help you if need be. Definitely get her help on the papers. Your grade will reflect how hard you've worked, but the class is definitely worth the effort.
This is positively the worst professor I have ever encountered at any college. I have learned absolutely nothing except exercises in totalitarian and monolithic thinking. If you think that you know anything about English, Dr. Pike will attempt to prove that you do not.
Dr. Pike's classes aren't just literature classes. They're more like a fusion of literature, sociology, history and philosophy. You learn about the social context for the novels you read. Much more informative than your usual lit. class but also more difficult.
Dr. Pike is a hard teacher, but you can tell she knows what she is talking about. She makes you look more than just the words on the page, she makes you actually thing. Her papers are tough, but she will help you whenever you need it. Not an easy teacher but who said college was easy!!
Dr. Pike may seem intimidating at first, but she is actually quite approachable and will go out of her way to help you. Her high expectations will make her seem hard, but she is fair, and she cares about what you get out of her class. This woman truly loves her job--it shows!
Do not take this woman unless you like Professors that make you cry. She gets a kick out of proving she's smarter than students. Once belittled student for marrying and taking hubbys name, if you arent a femanazi english major she hates you. AVOID
Dr. Pike is amazing. She knows her stuff and makes you feel SO much smarter just for taking her class. She is hilarious and runs around the room screaming sometimes to get her point across. Beware though, she has you do a lot of papers and really wants you to be analytical in your responses but it makes you a better writer. Best of all, no "final"!
Took Feminist Theory with Judith. She's interesting, but definitely pushes the feminist perspective a little far. Sort of eccentric, sort of insulting, but an interesting experience. She is probably one of the only professors that actually teaches grad school prep level classes, though.
I have always gotten A's in English and Lit and with her its impssible. She plays favorites, she is into feminism, and very belittling. If you don't write what to her is grad level you won't get a good grade! She is loud and expresses her opinion too much in a rude way. Knows her novels well, but expects you to know them at her level! DONTTAKEHER!!
Although Dr. Pike seems to be extremely difficult, she will meet with you as often and as much as you think you may need. She demands a LOT from her students; however, most students leave with a highly elevated understanding of literary theory. She is an outstanding professor, yet she is usually brutally HONEST, so be prepared to WORK in her class!
Very unhelpful in lessons, intentionally gave out assignments with vague instructions in order to confuse students in the hope that they would see what she wanted them to see, usually with poor results. Was very stubborn when it came to alternate viewpoints and only wanted her students to do things her way, giving little freedom for students.
Very nasty teacher, was big on making students look like complete fools compared to her (at least in her mind) because of how she would talk with elaborate, usually outrageous reasoning and wanted papers and assignments done her way, hence the nastiness part. Also had a habit of forcing beliefs, didn't like other views and didn't help at all.
Very loud and opinionated. She expects alot from her students and pushes you to you limits. Takes the time to ensure that you understand, and knows the material extremely well. Don't take unless you do well under pressure.
I love this woman! She gave us 10 short papers, but only 5 are graded. I'm such a better writer and she is only loud and proud because she thinks we are bored and to entertain her students. The first paper I go a B and got high A's afterward!
You must take her if you're an English Lit Major. Seriously. She will improve your writing by leaps and bounds, hook you up with internships, and is connected to everything writing wise that there is. Be prepared for HARD work, but she will help you every step of the way. She does more for her students than any Professor I've ever met.
This woman is horrible!!! So far one of the worst teachers I have ever had. She babbles on endlessly in class. Told us we only had to write 2 papers (we ended up writing 7). She is flaky and ditzy, yet expects her students to be perfect. She changes her mind continually about assignments, she never knows what she wants... DO NOT TAKE HER!!
Save yourself & do not take Pike. She has high expectations of her students yet she is consistantly late & unprepared for class. We are behind at least a week in our syllabus & she expects us to meet her demands yet she teaches nothing because she uses lecture as time to drone on about how we are not what she expects of us.
She was ok. Definitely plays favorites, and is not all that friendly. Her attacking style is largely due to wanting you to be interested. Fem Theory was a hard class, and at times it was over the top in ideology.
Absolutely incomprehensible as a teacher! No kidding. If you take her voluntarily you're nuts. Cannot communicate. Confusing. Eerily frightening at times; uncomfortable to be around. Must think she teaches at Harvard. Paper assignments are esoteric mysteries. Might as well be written in German. Not necessarily bad, but a really strange lady.
very boring
okay, Pike is getting a bad rep on this site. I liked her a lot, she definitely expects a lot, she gives a lot of work, but you come out of her classes a much better reader and writer. Definitely expect to work, but in the end i was so impressed with myself i really felt as though i learned something.
She has high expectations of everyone in her class, extremely helpful outside of class, a bit intimidating at first. Aim is to make you a better reader and writer, and she does. The novel choice is good to make you understand her purposes even if they are not the easiest novels to read. She wants to hear what you have to say. Loved having her.
Pretty crazy teacher trick is to actually bring your rough drafts to her. Not the type of teacher that gives any breaks and she most definitely plays favorites. Become her friend if you intend to pass this class and raise your hand to chime in on her long tangents.
Best professor I've had. She's smart, passionate, and cares about what she teaches. She will make you a better writer and a more attentive reader. Don't leave Salisbury without taking her at least once.
Well. Where do I start. If you take her Women in Literature class, you might as well start your papers now or start digging your grave. She knows her stuff, but this class is so out of her control and to only her benefit. I hate the class and she only wants papers written the way SHE would write them. What happened to free thought?
had her for grad engl class, forgot the course number but can't forget the teacher. So unbelievably bad. Like someone else said, "where do you even begin?" If you are seriously considering taking her you need to ask around first. No kidding. Here's a handful of not infrequently used adjectives: psychotic, unclear, confusing, discomfiting, weird...
If your an english major, she helps, but if your not, its best to keep away. She was often late and unprepared for class. Her assignments and tests were unclear at times and she wants papers done her way. Its not an impossible class but at times its tedious and boring and drags on and she often tells you to "re-read" novels as if we have time to.
This class is horrible. The books are boring and she expects you to be an expert on each one. She literally stands in front of the class and tells you that you don't know anything. Avoid this professor if possible.
this class could be good but the professor is not. Stay away from her at all cost
I read these reviews before taking Dr. Pike's class and I was really scared at first, but after being in her 252 class the bad reviews just aren't true! Pike is the best teacher I've ever had! She actually cares about every student and she is very fair and reasonable. She has postponed tests and papers so she can make sure we are ready. TAKE HER!
I've never rated a Prof before on this site. I don't plan to do so again. But I have to speak up for Dr. Pike here, as some have already done. I'm an English major and took Literary Analysis with Pike. It was very challenging. But my writing got significantly more scholarly and she has been in my corner ever since that class. Helped a lot.
She is really demanding, but her lectures are interesting and insightful. She also really helps a lot with papers as long as you bring them to her office. I'm an Eng major and she's prob the hardest teacher I've had, but helped me the most with my writing. Take her if your up for a challenge & really want to improve your writing skills
I took her Gothic Literature class in the spring semester and it was a blast! She taught the class how to write analytical papers that incorporate the history and culture surrounding the book. You'll be fine so long as you do the work and don't slack off.
I took her ENGL 342 class to require a Gen Ed...bad idea. She is obviously very well suited for her occupation, but she is NOT an easy teacher. She assigns an excessive amount of reading and expects you to know an incredible amount of information for the exams. Do not take her if you are looking for an easy Gen Ed.
Took her for my Lit 342. She is very boring and unprepared. She acts like you have no other classes besides hers. Assigns an incredible amount of work and reading in short periods of time. Constantly treats you like you know nothing. Do NOT take this teacher.
Wonderful professor. If you are an English major take her. I learned a lot from her. Very helpful and caring. My favorite professor ever.
Best professor I've had at Salisbury. Keep up with the reading, ask questions if you don't understand, and ask for rewrites on messy papers. Fun class and a lot of learning!
Not an easy professor-you actually have to study, do your work, and come to class. If you actually try, you will get a decent grade. Everyone on here who got bad grades is just slacking.
At first I did not like her, or her class. She will not go easy on you as far as workload, but will help you if you need it. She also allows rewrites of papers in some cases. There is a LOT of reading, so plan accordingly. I felt like for all the hard work, I came out a better writer, with practical knowledge. She genuinely cares for her students.
This was a 300 level course, and the workload was consistent with such. Dr. Pike is an enthusiastic teacher who cares about the progress of her students. Take her if you genuinely want to learn to improve your analytical and writing skills. You won't be disappointed.
This class is hard. Extremely hard, to the point that it makes my brain hurt, but you will learn an incredible amount from this woman. Learned more history in this class than all my other history classes combined. She is sweet, quirky, hilarious, and I have no idea why she isn't teaching at Yale. Amazing teacher.
Dr. Pike is awesome. Okay yes, this class is pretty challenging but it's a 300 level class; what do you expect? She's beyond helpful, take FULLLL advantage of her office hours. She keeps thing interesting in class, one of the most hilarious professors I've met thus far. Overall, you learn ALOT in this class and you get your money's worth. TAKE HER!
Dr.Pike is hands down the best professor I have ever had in all my years of school. She is hard and makes you work for your grade, but is ALWAYS willing to help. She uses humor, wit, and sarcasm to make her class the most interesting it can be. She is super intelligent and you can tell she actually loves what she is teaching. Highly recommend her.
I dread this class so much. She is funny and has passion to help up learn, but I and NOT an English major and expects to become experts at literature. My analysis is never good enough.
I am a psych major but taking this class has made me consider majoring in English or minoring. She has been one of my favorite and best professors. She wants to see you succeed but you have to be willing to work for it. She is exciting funny and never boring which is rare for a lit class. She is extremely helpful when it comes to writing papers and preparing for exams. I recommend meeting with her at least twice before turning a paper in. LOVE HER!
Professor Pike is going to push you to your highest potential. She is very particular in what she looks for causing the class to be extremely hard to begin with, but as time goes on you grow and it becomes easier. She has a lot of character and isn't afraid to speak her mind. She's an amazingly intelligent woman that will help when you do your work
This teacher is bangin. She is the coolest professor in all of SU. I wanna party with Dr. Pike. She is the smartest person you will ever meet, and super funny. Her class was fun yet challenging. ATTENTION CAT LOVERS: she loves her kittens too. All English Majors should take her class!!
Dr. Pike cares so much for what she teaches, and wants all her students to understand and excel. If you ask questions in class, she is happy to answer for you. You can't be afraid to speak up! Be prepared to take a lot of notes, but if you take good ones, the exams will be a breeze. Would recommend!
Such a crazy, intelligent, little woman. You have to work hard but you learn so much.. At the beginning of the semester you'll think she's annoying but by the end you will want to kiss her feet, she opens your eyes so much to the world around you. what you learn improves your work in all of the classes. Awesome professor.
Dr. Pike is so intelligent. When I first began the course, I was like great, another English course; but I've learned so much and she's opened up new horizons, I had never I even knew I cared for. She is funny, keeps it relative, but yet you learn so much about past and present things. I would greatly recommend you take this course!
Looking at the other reviews has me thinking that maybe she was just having a hard semester but my experience in Pike's Brit Lit course was horrible. She was extremely unorganized, went on long tangents about her family, and the instructions for assignments were not clear at all. She also lost hard copies of a few of my assignments-along withothers
Worst English professor i have ever had in my entire life. Very unorganized, and unprofessional. She is a very hard grader, and always gets off topic. I would avoid her if you can.
I absolutely love her class. Sometimes she may seem to go off topic, but in the end everything is related and makes sense. She seems to really care about her students and wants them do be the best that they can.
Dr. Pike is a great teacher. She really cares about every student and forces you to think deeply about everything. I didnt mind her tangents because they were often interesting and about real world issues.
Definitely hated her the first two weeks. I really believed she was racist and self-righteous but this is far from true! She is a lovely professor, has an odd but enjoyable sense of humor and really cares about student's progression. She also tries to accommodate to everyone's needs. Takes some time to warm up to her by I love her so much!!
I've taken her multiple times and I love her. She lectures everyday with powerpoints, and his hilarious. She keeps class fun. She will work with you and is very helpful when she does. She grades fairly, and she gives out her grading guidelines. You have to come to class and put in effort to pass.
Very intelligent lady, but she goes off topic often and very lecture heavy. No PowerPoints or handouts, so you have to listen very carefully. I would only take her if you are an English major, because she is tough! Also, be prepared to read for her class! I don't think I would take one of her classes again, but she really does know her stuff!
Dr. Pike drove me insane. She is so unorganized and you never have any idea what she's going to lecture about. She grades based on what she wants but doesn't specify in the assignment. It feels like she just pulls the assignments out of her ass. It's the end of the semester and I have absolutely no clue what my grade in the class is.
I really like Dr. Pike as a person and she is very intelligent, but this class was so disorganized and unclear, it drove me insane. Our grade was based on 4 assignments, which all had incredibly unclear criteria, and whenever you asked her about it, she would change something. Has potential to be such a neat class, but not executed well.
Dr. Pike was a great professor. Each class was entertaining . All of her exams are based of her lectures so be ready to take lots of notes. 2 in class writing assignments. The final exam was super easy it was based definitions and short answer super easy if you come to class and take notes
She is so unorganized and unclear when giving directions. In the middle of lecture she just shouts out oh add that to your homework too! And wonders why half the class hasnt completed it. She also gives a lot of homework. Her sense of humor comes across quite rude. A lot of the stuff she lectures about isnt even relative to the class.
This course is probably more difficult for non-English majors, but Dr. Pike understands that and is so good at making knowledge accessible. Due to COVID-19 we moved to online classes, and she went above and beyond to make it possible for us to learn as much as possible. She's a really great lady and cares a ton about her students. Also super funny!
In the beginning the class seemed very unclear and I found some comments to be offensive, but as the semester progressed I realized how much she actually cared about us and was the most entertaining and engaging teacher I have ever had. The exams were easy if you didn't skip class. Honestly one of the best.
Very unorganized!! She did not grade us on much 3 exams. There is a lot of reading that she expects done by the next lecture. Lecture were very vague. I found a lot of her statements to be very vulgar and offensive
I am at the beginning of taking the class, Women's Literature, and might I warn this course is not synonymous with the Women's History course offered on campus. This professor is straight-up disrespectful, incredibly rude, talks down to us (all of her students), and doesn't have an understanding that literature IS NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN BE WRONG IN.
This professor is absolutely terrible. If you have an option to take another professor over her, choose the other. She is extremely unclear of assignments, just blabs all class and expects us to write down every single word. Does not know how to use my classes. Her class is a guessing game I would not recommend it.
Judith is the absolute worst professor I've ever had. She talks all class yet what she says makes no sense and has nothing to do with what we're actually learning. She expects you to know how to do anything english related perfectly and if you don't understand something, she'll complain that she got a Ph.D. to reteach high school. DONTTAKETHISCLASS
Before taking this class, I looked up Professor Pike on this website and it was heartbreaking to see that she had awful reviews. However, the reviews are very accurate. Professor Pike is very unorganized and unpredictable. You can never trust her lectors because there is a high chance her exams will be based off information that she never discussed
Judith Pike is the most unclear and unorganized professor I have ever had. PLEASE avoid taking this class if you can. She creates her own terms for exams so if you did not go to class the day that she defined it, you will fail. Her assignments make zero sense and I have no idea how this is considered an English class. She shouldn't be teaching :)
Do NOT take this class. This professor is the most unclear and unorganized teacher I think I have ever had. She is not very understanding when we claim we are confused and lost. She doesn't make any sense in lectures and the only thing we are graded on is tests. The tests are close to impossible, and aren't even about anything we talk about in clas
Please believe the reviews. I gave Dr. Pike a chance, against what virtually every review told me not to do. Do not make my mistake. Does not know how to use MyClasses (or even Powerpoint!), does not grade things for months, does not respond to emails, guidelines for assignments very unclear. The most unorganized person I have ever met. DROP ASAP.
This professor is... interesting. She often says very offensive and controversial things from my experience and it is almost as if she doesn't understand. She prioritizes the wrong things in papers and bases the entire course around revisions. Personally, she did not make class extremely difficult for me so I would take her again if needed.
Don't take. Dr. Pike is very disoriented and has trouble relating to her students. She doesn't understand technology or how to put in grades so nobody knew our grades until final transcripts. She spent the whole semester talking about revisions and we never really got anywhere with the class. The syllabus changes constantly throughout the semester.
She laughs at you when you get a question wrong. Do not take this course with this professor. Never gives a definitive answer. I wish I could have dropped this course but she did not give any assignments until after the add/drop date.
She is very unorganized and strict. You will not know what assignment you are working on until she tells you in class and also multiple times she has told us one thing in class then never put anything online for a prompt or for a place to submit assigments.
She literally makes things up as she goes, The essays have no real claim and have nothing to do with what we are reading, she has no examples so you are completely lost and do not know what it is that she is expecting. And she doesn't read emails so don't expect any questions to be answered
Amazing professor over all. She really knew her stuff and knew how to teach it well. My reading comprehension went way up, which has helped me in my other courses.
Unorganized and strict professor. Assignments unclear, with lack of prompt details and submission instructions. However, Unstuck study was a helpful study tool to navigate the class.
I had a family emergency and tried to convey this to her. She told me to just drop out of the class or fail. I took the exact same class but with a different professor and received a 96%. She was very unsympathetic. I thought I was the issue until I found out she had a restraining order against her.
