Hard class, learned a lot. Killer course in summer. Very helpful and wants you to understand.
I read some reviews saying she likes half her class to fail. That's not true. She helps her students that are trying, not those who slack. I flunked the first time because I didn't do the work, got a B the second time. Well worth the effort involved. Take her!
So,u take Judy's 120 & realize u get a bum deal. No worries. Use text, Kolonko's fine ppt, enough discipline to self-study & u'll pass the assesmt. She thinks it's great that 1/2 her class are repeats! If u want to learn chem w/o the dysfunctional envirnmt, eat a W, study hard & test out. I did.
Take from Kolonko if you really want a decent instructor and want your interest in chemistry enlarged, not diminished.
This class was hard but great. She's very professional. Helps her students to no end. Changed my major form bio to chem because of this class. take her and work hard, you won't regret it.
Well for those who dont know what they are doing and just want to screw around and expecting an easy A, dont take this class. You're in Judy's lecture to learn Chemistry, so dont expect a free A. Work hard, read your book, do the practices and go to her during her office hour, then you can get an A. She is a Wonderful and helpful instructor. A+! ;)
Nice lady
I don't know what that last rater is talking about. I got an F the first time because I didn't do the work. I took her again because she wants to help you understand! That must be why so many repeaters take her again. Duh!
Kind of a nut, nice person, though. not clear about when to read or not, lots of take home problems, labs are not explained. She is hysterical, though. Usually talks about her dog Charlie and J. Geils Band. She is stuck in the 80's. Anyway, maybe not the best teacher, but she does know her stuff. Also, very stressful and random tests and quizzes.
Mrs. George is funny and knowledgable. She expects a lot out of you, and expects you to follow the info in her syllabus. Doesn't have patience for students who do not do read or do homework! Very helpful to those trying though. Go to office hours!
Sort of funny but not really, she says she makes herself available for office hours but she doesnt help when u go in to ask her ?'s. Really hard, not clear, lab and lecture quiz every week, only helps favorites, helps favorites during tests while others watch and struggle during tests. My suggestion..become her favorite an dont study ur better off.
She rocks! It's hard though!
Very helpful and always will to take time and meet with me and all students. She is a good teacher. hard class, study!
this class takes so much time. Use office hours and do homework, it helps.
Love Judy as a person she ROCKS! But needs to step up her teaching game :(
Took her for 120 easily passed with a B. Taking her for 142, near end of sem and still not sure what my grade is yet(not posted). Very hard class, takes A LOT of time, work, and dedication. This class is like a full time J O B times two!My Suggestion be on top of things. Once u dig a hole theres no getting out.
very tough class, it's chemistry! Had her for 120 too, got a b. Ask for grades and she sends them to you. Simple. Great teacher, go to office hours. Read book, don't get behind. Impossible to catch up.
study, use book go to class. Tough but good teacher. Expects you to do your part. Very helpful!!
Judy's a great person, but her teaching is a little bit confusing, so your better off using the book! But she definitely has her fav students so be one of them by showing her your effort!! She is a helpful teacher overall, but doesn't have any patience for slackers, but Chem is hard no matter who you take it with! good luck!
Lets put it this way each day before class i asked myself whether i should continue going to class or jumping over the guardrail and ending it all! Made every effort to do well, hope i got a C. If i did its from reading the book multiple times not her teaching. She is just not clear! She rushes through lectures and leaves you i the dust.
LOL! I find the comments below very interesting! The comment which says she sends grades to you....I as well as others have asked for them and am still waiting..It was finals today and i still have not gotten my grade from her. Infact she told our class to calculate them by ourselves...Have no clue what that user is talking about...
probably the best science teacher I have ever had. knows her stuff and is helpful.
Went to every single lecture, studied my rear end off, read the chapter over multiple times, spent tremendous amount of hours on labs and got a C. Was it worth it? NO. BUt sure as hell glad its over with.
Probably the worst teacher ive ever had, she knows her stuff but does not teach it well 2 students...
great teacher. super cool, wants you to understand. tons of work. should be 6 units. lab book sucks!
she is intelligent and funny, but you have to do like 55 problems from the book every chapter, the pre lab, online questions from her worksheets and OWL so if you do it, its about 4 hours of homework every class meeting. and its not her fault, the district requires some of this crap. she is HARD. her class is HARD. but she is amazing
Professor George puts herself out there to help students by saying come 2 her office hours, but when you go you find yourself standing there for 15 minutes holding a book while she talks about horses and other nonsense with students...thats what happend to me...thanks Judy you helped out tremendously.
WORST professor ever! she doesnt give a crap about her students. it seems like she purposely wants everyone to fail. instead of testing you on what you r supposed to know from what youve learned, she tests u to see if u can derive the hardest crap, like we're scientists, however its just beginning chemistry.
way too much work. takes forever to respond to emails. i worked harder than i have ever worked, and i am a very smart person, but still received a C. the material is very easy but she makes it very hard. past posts say if you go to her office hours she will like u and you will get a better grade. i went to a lot of office hours but it didnt help
i attended every class. she considers a C a good grade. im warning you, any good comments about her on this was written by judy because every student of hers i have talked to have all agreed with me. do not take this class!!! she should be fired.
Probably the WORST teacher I have ever had at Grossmont! I agree 100% with the people below...she should definitely be fired because she does NOT make it general chemistry I am an A student and I got a D in her class!!!She kept telling me "you'll be fine," but obliviously NOT!SAVE YOURSELF AND AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!!
I think everyone should be unertsnading of Ms.Judy this semester. Dude, she almost died half way through and was in the hospital for like almost a month and still andswred my e-mails!!! I got a B and worked really hard for it cause ..ready...get this...Chemistry requires work!
For the person who wrote two comments down, you are rude judging your classmates. I thought everyone in the fall 141 class was helpful and nice. Her class is hard, but in the end you will know your chemistry backwards and forwards. I didn't do so well, but it's worth taking her class again. :0)So is willing to help you at anytime as well. :0)
Judy is a really nice person. The class is really hard and she grades tough. But if you take the time to talk to her if you need help, she will take the time to help you. She even came in to meet me the morning she had to go to the hospital last semester, even though she was in pain, but met with me anyway cuz I was stressed and needed help.
Chemistry is definitely not one of my strengths, and her class is hard. I worded my ass off just to pass. High drop rate.
For the love of god and yourself, do not take her. She is a great lady and person, but not a great teacher. I think she has too much stuff going on, because she is one of the heads for the chemistry dep, scatter brain at times. Figured out how to work the overhead towards the end of class, which could have helped in the beginning.
My class was suppose to be General Chemistry, but she teaches like you're suppose to be in chem 141 already. She thinks your suppose to know what she knows already. She is a great lady though, just not a good teacher. Does not explain labs thoroughly.
Ms. george is a brilliant teacher there is no doubt that she does not love chemistry. only reason you students are complainin is because she actually makes you work. She expects you to be an adult and work. She won't give you the answers as other teachers do. I managed to get a B in this class only bc I had 5 other classes. An A is very possible
Definately knows what she's talking about, works fast though. Be prepared to put in a lot of work outside of class to understand stuff. She's not going to hold your hand, she'll treat you like an adult and hold you accountable for practicing the stuff on your own.
hard class
tough lady
I took Judy for 141 and she was extremely difficult. She's very specific and expects you to know what she knows. She writes her notes on the board but doesnt really explain them. Prepare to do work because you will do tough labs, quizzes, tests, and mastering chemistry online homework.
Very difficult. Very high expectations. If you slip up it will snowball...She understands chemistry at a graduate level. Beginning chemistry students do not....She has way too high expectations of the intro chemistry student. Good luck.
She is friendly and and seems to know chemistry front and back, but when portraying it to her students there seems to be a disconnect. I would suggest a good tutor, doing online homework AHEAD of time, and LOTS of reading the book at home if you want to get through this class. I'm normally an A student and this class is seriously screwing me over.
I LOVE Judy George! she is so awesome! she may be hard, but hey its chemistry. Study hard. she is very helpful if you need it. Best teacher at grossmont.
I think Judy George is a great teacher. She cares about all of her students and is very approachable and helpful. This is a hard class but if you read the book and do the homework you will do well.
Brutally difficult; T.A. guidelines for grading are even more brutal. Average grade on labs in intro class was below B. She is absolutely not exaggerating when she tells you the workload you should be expecting: Between online homework, book homework, lab reports, there is ALWAYS chemistry to do. That's not including time spent reading the book.
She expects you to do the work to get through this course. But it is chemistry so if you're not ready to put in the time don't take this class. Her lectures are pretty quickly paced but she is always willing to answer questions and she encourages office visits and tutoring. Although I'm not excited about it I think I'm ready for 141.
The subject is difficult in itself, and the class was very frustrating. She obviously is very intelligent, but I had a very hard time learning from her. She will help you when you need it, but I often find her explanations unclear. You can possibly get an A if you work really really really hard!! And use notecards!!!!!!!!!!
Judy is incredible! Yeah her class is super tough, but chemistry is a tough subject. I you do homework, pay attention in class, and ask for help when lost, it's easy to pass the class. You have to do homework to pass! She's just a great person all around! I still stop by her office hours to just chat :)
This class is tough! Professor George is not very helpful either. I have been to office hours a number of times and she is alway checking her emails when I am talking. In labs she is constantly out of the room and unavailable to help students. When she is there she is socializing with other faculty, T.A.'s or past students. Good luck!
Tough class. It's very evident it's a non-slacker course. Very nice women though. READ material ahead of lecture, SHOW ALL WORK, and sit in front of her class so you can see the board...I'm always stretching my neck out to see past the people with annoyingly big 'ol heads that sit in the front -_- Still haven't finished class yet, but Hope I pass.
Judy uses an overpriced online website for assignments. Be expecting to spend $200+ on that and materials. She also leans towards criticizing people over instruction. I feel that I've learned a lot in that class just by watching other students get criticized for doing something wrong, that I could have known with more thorough prep.
She is very good and knows her stuff. I fonder her helpful. For those seeking chem 120, she is teaching a 10-week session this March 2013
Do not take her. Too much work not enough time for other classes. Her class is designed like an online class which you have to attend. Unless you are only taking her class, I subject you take different professor.
shes alright
Prof George definitely lives up to her reputation. She is the most difficult professor/class I've ever had. Average of 2 hours of hw a night between reading the textbook, labs, and online hw. She doesn't curve tests but she curves class grades to 88=A/ 78=B etc. If you're a science major like me, take her. If for GE, choose an easier professor.
Very helpful, she wants to help me pass this class.
If you want to learn chem, take her as P/NP. Makes life difficult. Will chop points off for very minuscule reasons. Don't take for GE, don't take for Sci major. Treat it like an 8-unit course with her. Very harsh grading. Unmanageable between other math or science courses. Overall: avoid.
She one of nicest professors you can have just as long as you keep up with her. She is easy to approach and always willing to help. read chapters ahead of time so you can understand the lectures and you will do fine. People may not like her because they have pour study habits and have no clue on what they are doing
Fairly difficult instructor, overall unremarkable class, difficult content. Online homework impedes the actual learning of the material. Book costs were unreasonably high. Class sessions cursory at best, often skirts over minute but important details. 1/10 wnd.
So this is the kind of instructor who fails half her students and says "Don't worry, everything will be fine - happy holidays!" while it happens. This is who we're talking about here. Take her or leave her.
I dropped her 141 chem shouldn't be as hard as she makes it. taking another teacher this semester and have an A and I understand the material a hundred times better nice lady but if you struggle with chem don't take her she looks down on you for asking to many questions
Chem is hard but worth the effort. Glad a prof is finally making sure future dr and nurses are up to par and does not waiver on quality of content. Higher Chem classes def make u test your abilities, not for everyone but if you are willing to be serious and studious also worth it
real tough lady. Im taking this class as a GE with pass/no pass and I'm afraid that I may not pass this class. This class is pretty hard, not the material though. She chops off points for sigfig alot so be aware
Not Even once
Never taken a chem class in my life. This professor is awesome. Chem is not suppose to be easy. Her lectures idk how but it sticks to the brain. I barely read the text book and I got a good grade. I sat in the front table, our table bothered her a lot but she put up with us. She really cares about each student in the class personally. Thanks prof!
Professor George is an amazing person. She really cares about her students. I’ve never met anyone that had so much faith in us. She always encouraged us to ask questions and to go the tutoring center. she really is the best! If you’re reading this Judy! Thank you for an awesome summer. Im still going to bring you some Pistachio Sweets!!
Judy is a great person, but not a great teacher. Her lectures for intro Chemistry were probably lectures at the level of a third semester Chemistry class. She does not explain concepts very well and she grades tough. But you will love her as a person.
hardest chemistry instructor in Grossmont-Cuyamaca union. She LOVES chemistry
She expects students to go above and beyond to simply do well enough to pass. You will have to work extremely hard to get a decent grade in this class. Homework takes a great deal of your time. Do not take with another difficult class.
If you care about your GPA then don't take this class. oh yea and one more thing MAKE SURE THIS IS YOUR ONLY CLASS FOR A SEMESTER! The lab reports must be 8 pages and more for you to even be lucky to receive a descent grade on them. I promise I am not making this up. TRULY a tough class.
I went into the class knowing more than when I came out of it. Needless to say, I didn't pass. After a certain point I gave up. This was one of my first classes at Grossmont and it became a horrible experience. She was very rude, and when students would ask questions, she would treat them poorly. Too much work for the amount of units.
I love Judys teaching styles, very sweet professor and is there for you if you need help.
I came into this class hateing chemistry as I failed it in high school, but left considering changing my major to chemistry! Very caring and passionate teacher who really tried to hep students as long as they showed effort. The course was challenging but I'm happy I chose her over other professors. Highly recommend Judy she is an excellent educator!
She was incredible. Her lectures were organized so notes could be taken easily and I still use the notes from her class in other chemistry classes. I recommend you sit on the left side of class, she stands a lot on the right side- blocking the board. She did get a little annoyed when questions about the lab were asked though. Expects you to know
Her notes are very clear. I recommend reading before going to class. She really cares that her students do well as long as you put in the effort and don't miss class.
Good person, bad teacher. She doesnt explain well. Very unorganized. Shes not clear at all. Shed announce something to a student standing next to her, and expect all students to hear it. Even though I passed with an B, but she loves to take points off. I passed on my own, not because she teaches well. Dont recommend her at all.
If you dont understand something, dont ask. Shell make you feel bad in front of everybody. Youll need to watch plenty of YouTube to understand concepts. I dont recommend her. In fact, if youre majoring chem, dont take her because you might end up hating chemistry because of her.
Expects you to skim key points and math b4 lecture. Alright but fast paced. Need a solid understanding of prior chem to pass weekly quizzes/chp test. Known for difficult questions. Good thing about her class is that she can be lenient and is super forgiving about late assignments. If you live/breathe chem sure but her class can hurt the gpa.
Judy is a tough grader. She can be kinda snarky when you ask her questions, but in the end you get the answer. Her lectures can be kinda disorganized so read before you come to class, trust me. Shes always on time with quizzes which I like. She also drops lowest test, lab, and quiz scores which is nice. Good person, okay professor.
Anti-technology. No Canvas, no powerpoints. She writes out all the notes for her lectures & communicates thru email. Great person, ok prof. Very hard grader. Lots of hw, which helps. Exams are tough. Kinda confusing on explanations. Expects you to know a lot beforehand. Drops lowest scores which helps a lot. Overall a tough class.
Stay very far away! Most of the student's drop, grading is unfair and if she doesn't like you, be ready for constant disrespect from her. I am a 4 year grossmont student that has been through all kinds of classes and she was by far the worse. Students complain of depression, anxiety and Chem majors are questioning themselves. Time to fire her!
She spends all lab time talking to other professors and when you ask for clarification she says you should drop out. She made fun of me once for asking a question, she mocked me saying that I wanted to cry. I already reported her to the chemistry department. Others should follow soon.
Rude, not helpful , and has a passion for making your experience at Grossmont awful. People should avoid her class like the plague.
Judy doesn't like it when you ask questions and pretty much expects you to know everything for the class before you even take it. She also hangs out with other professors during labs so if you need to ask a question you'll need to wait a while. During lecture, she goes quickly whether or not anyone wrote down or even understood what was said.
Don't walk, Run!I am very stressed and almost got an ulcer. She disappears during labs and is firm on tests that have no multiple choice questions. I am afraid to ask her any questions because she would get very upset that you even had to ask in the first place. I would write more, but the character limit hinders my ability to leave indepth review.
By far the worse professor I have ever had. Very confusing, and not very supportive of her students at all. Our classes average this past exam was a C- and her initial reaction is to the blame the students for not 'putting in the work.' During labs she leaves for 30 minutes at a time, and students have gotten injured during this time. AVOID HER.
By far the worst professor I have had. Shes blamed and called out on me multiple times in front of the whole class for asking for more time on tests. Does not give adequate time for her stupid long and poorly formatted exams. Have had more negative effects on my life than COVID caused. You will need your classes help and stick together or fail.
I had this teacher during the pandemic for chem 120 online. She's a great teacher, but very workload heavy. I did fall behind several times, but she was super understanding of letting me turn in work late. I felt like she would've been a great professor in person. It definitely was a change for her to do online classes. Please be patient with her
Do not take her class, made me absolutely hate chemistry. Her notes and lectures were all over the place, very unorganized, even office hours did not help ended up dropping and taking with another professor and I'm doing much better. Assigns a lot of assignments took her class during the pandemic and it was completely a mess.
She's a nice lady overall, but her class is extremely difficult. This is NOT AN EASY A, you will have to work very hard to get a good grade in her class. The labs are hard and very time-consuming, the midterms are worth a lot and they're very difficult. If you're willing to try your best then go ahead and take her, get ready to study study study!
