Judy is a great professor, the class is hard, but she makes it fun and interesting, highly recommended. Bonus points available throughout the quarter.
very friendly, very helpful, very interesting class, she does a great job presenting the material. Very funny if you like stilly jokes. :-)
interesting class if you LOVE plants well regardless still a fun class to take. study guides are helpful for the exams. love her jokes! xD
I agree with all the comments written so far. Great professor; she definitely know her material. I have never had a lab where the professor taught it. Labs are sort of long but she makes it fun. Tests are very fair.
Judy is a great instructor. The labs are long but essential to understanding the material. Class size is always small and it will be obvious if you don't go to class. Class attendance is important since it's where all the material is presented, be prepared to take ample notes. This isn't an easy class. Judy is kind and makes it fun.
Judy Jernstedt is one of the most interesting, knowledgeable, engaging, humorous (you know what I mean if you've met her), and flat out fun Professors I have ever met.
Wonderful professor who only wants to help you out. Class has a ton of material and labs are long but she makes it fun with jokes and snacks during lab. Always upbeat and engaging. Class might be better suited for plant bio majors than if you are just looking for something to fill your area of emphasis.
Wonderful person and great teacher!
great professor- very engaging and very helpful. class isn't easy but it's also not extremely hard, go to class because lots of material gets covered. As long as you go to class and do the study guides, you'll be fine for the tests. don't be afraid to ask questions. Be sure to have some interest in plants.
Judy is a great professor who obviously truly loves her field of study and has a way of making it available to students. The material is not a breeze, and devotion from the student is a necessary counterpart to ensure success in this class. If you find yourself struggling, then ask questions! Judy loves to engage with the students so let her!
very nice teacher. Very enthusiastic. Very fun class!
Judy is really helpful and takes a great interest in her students learning. I found the class very interesting and enjoyed it a lot. The field trip to the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden was great too.
The cutest and hippest little old lady. Take her just to be entertained by her presence. Class was not too hard to follow along but the midterms were a bit tricky even though she says they're not meant to trick you. You're allowed a note card for the tests, but you really have to know more than you think you can handle in order to do well.
Judy has been one of the most delightful profs, very helpful, and enthusiastic about plants. Labs were filled with treats, and helped to make sense of lect info. Midterms were fair. Notecard is allowed for exams.
Judy is an amazing teacher that takes a lot of time to make sure her students understand the information. She also tries to present her material in an intersting and funny way. I truly recommend this class, even if plants are not your favorite kingdom to study, you'll end up loving it and having a whole new respect for the subject!
Be sure to read the book and use the review module! The tests cover -everything-, so be sure to study carefully. Judy is a great professor and goes out of her way to help you understand. Don't be shy about asking questions!
This is one of the hardest classes I've taken at Davis, but Judy is a great professor who is funny, extremely knowledgeable and wants to help you learn the material. She's open to answering any questions and is very approachable. Lab quizzes are really tough. Review sessions for tests are really helpful and usually pretty small.
Best professor at Davis!!!
Best professor at UC davis, she is very enthusiastic about plants. However, the class is really tough, you have to really love plants to do well in this class. The lab quizes are very challenging. Overall, the class is tough and will take most of your time but it's very rewarding.
Judy is by far the best PLB professor at UC Davis. Not only is she extremely fair, but also understanding. She is not one of those teachers that believes that her class is the only class that her students are taking. I LOVE JUDY JERNSTEDT.
This is not an easy class. There r lots of memorization and information. You have to study to get a good grade (not guaranteed though)The exams are hard but you are allow 3X5 note card. BUT!! She is really nice and enthusiastic about the topic. The labs are fun. She let us try many different foods. It is the best class I ever had so far.
Judy is a great professor; very approachable, and extremely flexible with her office hour--just stop by whenever you can. For exams, know the materials well and don't overlook anything; any thing appears on the exams is fair game. The lab is fun, and always has yummy foods! Overall, the class is good, and the professor is hot with "plantic" world.
Judy is a wonderful professor with many handouts that will help you understand the material and labs are fun. but the 6% curve is not enough the class and labs are jam packed with material. the midterms are hard even with the 3x5 note card. and the lab quizzes are even harder (no note card) if you are looking for an easy A look somewhere else
prof is great, even though the class is intense. She takes your hands and walk y'all thru all difficulties of learning plant biology materials. Come to office hours, and ask questions. First lecture is about denial of witchcraft n an overall view of class. Class field trip to Berkeley is awesome! Exams are graded based on "grammar" n correct info.
I've never taken a PLB class before and so this class was challenging to me. But during lab/lecture Judy is very helpful and supportive. Her lectures are thorough and there's never a dull moment. Textbook is uploaded to Smartsite (it's pretty useful if you actually have time to read). Take this class if it's an option, it's worth it!
Judy is a wonderful professor! She really knows her stuff and is friendly, helpful and makes an effort to learn everyone's name. Don't hesitate to ask questions! Definitely have to study, but you get a note card for the lecture exams (not for lab quizzes though). Text book is free online. Ask her to draw a flower with both hands some time!
"winner takes all"--the theme of the class. Student who scores the most total points sets the curve. You are not really try to beat the exams; it's a friendly competition between you and your classmates. Fight with nails and teeth, and the experience will thrill you. Prof rocks! I enjoy the class. Class is tough, but too bad, i'm tougher! I love it
Judy is great; really helpful and super duper nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She works really hard. The department is short on money or something, she has to teach the lectures, a also has to teach a lab section too...and co-grade the exams with the TA. Love Judy 4 her dedication to education. She is hilarious; she tells great jokes! U rock Judy!
Dr. J is a firecracker with a heart of gold and the knowledge a thousand plant-specific encyclopedias. She's like the fairy godmother, and you are the lost Disney princess bumble-derping around looking for plant-love in all the wrong places. She shows you the way!
Great professor. she loads you up with a lot of material but thats what you're here for in college. Drink it up.
Dr. Jernstedt is very helpful during OH and understands that every student comes from a different background. The class may be challenging for people not familiar with plants or free response tests. Labs could use a little more organization, but overall the online module helps. I got confused a couple times in lab, but if you ask Dr.J she helps.
Great professor! She really interacts with students to get them involved and learning. The tests are a little tricky, but if you study, they are totally doable!
Dr. J is very knowledgeable about all things plants, and ties in interesting real world asides as well. She acts informal and friendly, but is also respectful/ commands respect, and full of information. Asks great thinker questions in person. Tests difficult, and on edge of reasonable/ too much information. Many helpful resources made available.
Dr. J is an pretty good professor. Her knowledge of plants sometimes blows me away. However, the test require a lot of studying so be prepared for that. Also the lab are a bit fun because we eat our way through them.
One of the best professors I've had at Davis. She has an incredible amount of knowledge and loves to share it with others. Lots of information in the class, but Judy makes it amazingly easy to learn and study. Book is not necessary but its a nice resource for clarification. Had her for PLB105 too; just as rewarding/amazing. Dr. J is THE business!
I am a senior and I place Dr. J in my top 3 professors of all time. Her knowledge of plants is supernatural. I doubt Google knows more about plants than her. She is extremely funny and takes a lot of interest in her students. This class is not easy. Dr. J grades the exams hard so make sure you are willing to learn otherwise pick another course.
Tons of info to learn, but you're probably here because you like plants, so it's not too big of a deal. Judy is a great professor - really enthusiastic and always willing to help.
Dr. J is one cool cat. Her lectures are filled with material but she doesn't mind slowing down if you need clarification. I was more of an animal person before this class, but Judy has peaked my interest in plants with her awesome course.
She was difficult but really knowledgable. Work hard and you'll learn A LOT.
Great teacher! Her knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject helped keep me motivated. It's an interesting subject but the tests are challenging. Just be prepared and take study guides seriously. The lab section was really fun, and Judy was around to help in lab which was really cool. I recommend this class if you're interested in the subject.
Judy is an awesome professor! There is so much material to learn especially if you're not a plant bio major, but her lectures are interesting and she's very helpful. Her tests include just about EVERYTHING but she lets you use a notecard which is nice. Take the class even if you're not interested in plants - you will be by the end of the quarter!
She is amazing and makes me love plants more! Recommend to everyone who wants a plant morphology class.
Amazing class with amazing professor. she is the sweetest and she is brilliant, every single thing you ask shes able to answer. She made me fall in love with plants. More difficult than I thought but worth taking it.
She is a really good professor. It appears clearly that the students' successes in the class is really important to her. She made herself available to help. Clear lectures. However, she tended to speak fast.
Very helpful when needed, her puns are a great way to start off the class lecture. She is very knowledgeable about the subject matter and teaches it in a clear way.
Great Professor, helpful and very knowledgable.
Awesome professor! She cares so much about her students and it really truly shows. Her lectures are all handwritten and hand-drawn on the board which makes going to lecture very important especially because it doesn't get posted online. Make sure to note the many details she presents because you never know what will be important on exams.
Judy Jernstedt is a good lecturer even though she can sometimes make some mistakes in her notes--she really tries to make lecture interesting. It's a bit hard to know exactly what to expect from her exams though, but if you go to office hours and review sessions, you'll have a much better idea. Would really recommend this teacher.
The content for this course is dense, but the continuity is great and most topics covered in lecture are reinforced in the lab. The textbook is helpful as review. Her lectures are full of cool examples, interesting facts, and some pretty charming jokes. This class has me looking at plants in a completely new light!
Really awesome Professor, very helpful and caring. The lectures are a little dry and easy to miss something if you're not paying close attention but overall interesting and a good class to take.
Very helpful, fun class but a lot of studying!!
Great class if you like plants or not. Lab was super fun and interesting. Lots of eating and snacking throughout lab. Not a boring moment in either lab or lecture.
I came into this class with virtually no knowledge about plants, but not once did Judy look down on me or make me feel dumb for asking basic questions. She really helped me to fill in the gaps in my knowledge, and it seemed she truly wanted us to succeed. Her excitement about plants is infectious! She also brings in lots of awesome food to lab.
Like many in this class this quarter, I knew pretty much nothing about plants. Judy and Mitch helped my understand the plant kingdom significantly better than I ever thought that I could! It was a spectacular class, even if it was difficult for me. The labs more often than not had interesting things to do and try, while still learning about plants!
Judy was a great professor who was willing to help out a lot. There is a lot to learn in this class but its doable. This class is much easier if you have taken PLB 105 before hand. Labs were really fun and Judy made a lot of food for us to eat.
Make sure to review plant material before taking class, just taking BIS series is not enough. Midterms are tough and you need to review often, Lab quizzes are fair just use the study module she provides. Weekly lecture quizzes, some were hard some were not. Lab is very relaxed and not too hard, just make sure and pay attention. Judy is a great prof
I would highly recommend this professor. Though the class is extremely difficult, Judy goes above and beyond to ensure that lecture and lab are interesting and fun. Definitely one of the best most engaging professors I've had at Davis. Regardless of your final grade you will finish the quarter feeling like you learned a lot.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but you need to show up to class if you want to pass. She's a fun teacher there is just a lot of material covered. Make sure to pay attention to cladograms and be ready to compare and contrast different groups studied.
Judy is a top notch professor! She has an excellent understanding of the course material, can communicate the information clearly, and is very receptive of student questions. Take a class with her if you want to learn the fundamentals of vascular plant evolutionary history. Her jokes are excellent as well!
This is a difficult class. Judy is wonderful. She's very engaging, excited to teach and fun but I found many of her lectures to be a little confusing. She crams a lot of information into each lecture so you need to show up alert and prepared. She's always very happy to answer questions and help you understand concepts.
Extremely difficult class having taken only BIS2C. Never in my life I had to put so much time into a class. Great lecturer but study guides for exams are often confusing. 2 midterms, 1 final, 3 lab practicals, all of which are graded strictly. Very willing to help students, approachable, and encourages questions. Take only if absolutely have to.
Judy is probably one of the best, if not the best professor I have ever had. This class is tough, and there is a lot of information so make sure you study at least a few hours/week. Quizzes vary in difficulty. It's essential to take detailed notes and go to the review sessions for exams. This class is difficult but very interesting and very doable.
Judy is incredibly knowledgable and genuinely cares about student learning. Really awesome professor!
Judy makes the class very entertaining. The information is a little tough since I was not a plant bio major but Judy is more than willing to help you out with the information if you just ask.
Judy was an amazing teacher and always was willing to help you out if you didn't understand a subject. Writes all her lectures on the board so you have to go to class. The midterms are usually exactly what she puts on the study guide, but asked differently. This class is great but you do need to put into a lot of work in order to succeed.
Judy is really nice. She expects her students to come to class. Tests are a little challenging but she is willing to help you in office hour and lab. Lots of food is provided in lab.
All lectures are written on the board, hence why this class is mandatory. The study guides were questions that were convergent with topics covered on the exams. I found the review module to be particularly helpful though. There is a lot to cover in this class, so it is important to revisit notes and handouts periodically.
Everything is based off of chalk board drawing and verbal lectures, it would go a long way if she talked slower while drawing on the board or started using powerpoint slides more frequently.
She was going to give out class pop quizzes but settled for scheduled weekly quizzes. She wants to help and is very passionate about the course but her lectures are usually at least a little disorganized. There are a lot of diagrams and a book that help as references but she doesn't expect you to know more than what was discussed in class.
Judy is the best! She knows plants better than most people know anything. This class is a tough one, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone not genuinely interested in plants, as you will be spending quite a bit of time studying. The lectures come straight out of the textbook, and she hands out a study guide for every exam.
Judy is very passionate about plants, and her class makes you too! Almost all of the material covered on the exams and weekly quizzes is on the chalkboard (besides a few picture slides) and from handouts so it is really important to come to class or else you will get behind very fast. Textbook is provided online and is very helpful before lectures.
The class overall is tough but she is a great teacher. She is very knowledgeable and helpful. She brings snacks to her lab related to the topics discussed and also arranges a class trip to UC Berkley Botanical gardens! For her lab test I suggest you use the website she gives on the syllabus. Also there is no book required to buy.
Judy is a great lecturer, very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Her tests are a little long and difficult, and she grades pretty tough but it is manageable and she gives opportunities for bonus points.
Expectations are high in this class, but you'll do well as long as you put in the effort. Judy covers a lot of material in 50 minutes, but fret not, her lectures are perfectly paced and very clear. Take diligent handwritten notes in lecture so you can replicate her sketches. The lab portion is excellent, just make sure you come prepared.
Very good instructor. At times the notes can be a bit messy (it's all hand drawn and written on the chalkboard) and she abbreviates a lot so even if you're copying everything down you may not know what's going on if you zone out even for a few seconds. Fortunately she's always available for questions and willing to help
Lecture info is very important, so you need to go to class to do well. Tests are hard and there is a ton of information in lab, but she's very willing to help students.
She is a very good professor, but it's easy to get lost in all the info you need to know if you don't have prior plant knowledge. I felt like the labs could be more structured since you were allowed to do anything, and could easy miss important information.
Judy is a great teacher... this class has a ton of material and get ready to work
Judy is a decent professor. Sometimes she will go over material way too quickly so that you barely get to glance at it before she moves onto something else. Her tests are fair, but, will be hard if you don't prepare. This is NOT a class you can breeze through. Lab is fun and engaging, but, long. Pay respect and take this class seriously.
PLB116 with Dr. Jernstedt is a lot of work. Because it is a lot of work and the fact that the material isn't organized well enough, it makes the class difficult. Do not slack off in this class and you constantly have to study. Don't take this class if you don't have to. Teacher is nice and caring though.
extremely difficult class intended for plant bio majors. disorganized and confusing lectures on whiteboard. provides conflicting pieces of information and expects you to find the correct information using textbooks/online resources. very nitpicky about exam fill-in-blanks and short answers. doesn't seem to respect or care about non-plant students.
very disorganized. took the professor 19 days to grade a 4 page midterm with the help of 5 TAs. professor does not seem to care much about students (or the TAs), and has shown signs of hypocrisy (will not increase the small curve she gives as she cannot defy the syllabus per campus rules but changes the schedule of quizzes/exams all the time).
Judy is a knowledgeable professor who is very willing to take extra time to help/talk to students interested in learning the course material. Tests were graded strictly, but if you want to learn about plant anatomy this is the class for you -- great if you're in a plant-related major, but people who aren't interested in plants might struggle.
FIRST TIME THE PROFESSOR WAS TEACHING THIS CLASS, AND AS THE COMMENTS SAID BELOW IT WAS INSANELY HARD/ALL OVER THE PLACE. MEDIAN FOR HER MIDTERM WAS 55%. THE PROFESSOR KNEW SHE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE CLASS AVERAGE, TRIED TO SOLVE IT BY ALLOWING US TO BRING 1 SMALL NOTECARD TO FINAL, THEN MADE HER LAB FINAL EVEN HARDER THAN HER MIDTERMS. NEVER TAKE
Lectures on blackboard were often confusing and difficult to follow. Exams were graded harshly with little leeway for earning partial credit. There wasn't clear communication of expectations making it difficult to find a path to success. Overall stressful course that was much harder than it needed to be.
Lectures were on chalkboard and she would post podcasts but not lecture notes? She also expects students to do reading without saying so in lecture. Readings were never brought up in lab or lecture. When asked for help, she would always refer you to readings instead of actually helping. She also grades extremely tough and isn't clear on grading.
Horribly structured class. Used the chalkboard and you basically could never see what she drew but she expected us to draw like artists on the exam. I struggled to piece together the information provided in class because this was soooo disorganized. Unless you are a plant biology major, do not take this class. she doesnt care about non-plb studens
This was the most disorganized class I've ever taken. Judy had insane expectations of us that were not clear. Any time you thought you knew what she wanted, it would be completely wrong. Lectures are so fast that I just had to scribble down her drawings instead of actually learning. I was a plant biology major, and this prof made me change my mind.
Judy is brilliant. She's incredibly caring, smart, and one of the top plant anatomists in the world -- but this means she expects a lot from students. I put in way more time and effort than I was expecting to in this class, but it paid off and I absolutely LOVED it. She was selected to teach it without a lot of notice, but she did great!
The only thing I learned from this class was to have a photographic memory for every single plant cross section and that the professor was not helpful b/c you are expected to get help from reading a confusing old textbook. Class materials was harder than needed to be & the professor writing on a chalkboard with poor handwriting did not help either.
Class was simply not taught well. Shes also very disorganized and she can sometimes have an attitude. Half of the students ended up failing the the class, and as a result couldnt graduate on time. I managed to survive only because of the curve. Quite possibly the worst professor in the STEM field at UC Davis.
Judy's tests are EXTREMELY harshly graded. You need to write down EXACTLY what she says in lecture on your exam to get full credit. However, you need to be careful because she often teaches incorrect material in lecture and fails to correct herself. Lab is exceedingly difficult as well. Avoid at all costs.
This is my second class with Judy! Taking Plant Anatomy (PLB 105) before PLB 116 definitely helped with a lot of the concepts. This class requires a lot of memorization, but it's a lot easier if you go through the labs thoroughly because they're set up to help you make connections and remember the material better. Recommend if you love plants!
Lab exams are fine but lecture exams are exceptionally difficult. Questions are worded vaguely, there is a tight word count, and then you essentially guess what needs to be included. You will get the problem wrong if your answer is correct, but not the answer she has in mind. There is a max 6% curve - no matter what the avg is.
This is literally one of the hardest classes Ive ever taken at UC Davis. Her tests are graded very particularly with some of them being graded as right answers minus wrong ones. Meaning if you only got 70 right but missed 30, you only got 40 points. She can be accessible outside of class and granted online teaching is hard -but would not recommend
By far the absolute worst class Ive ever taken in my entire academic career. Its online right now due to the pandemic and it is so disorganized and often vague. The class average is an F even with the lecture exams being open book/ open note/ open internet. The lab exams are hard but manageable if you study extremely diligently. AVOID AT ALL COST
