She's new and she's awesome! Super enthusiastic and super clear about what she wants. She's also really accomodating and FAIR!!! Her tests are totally fair and lecture based. You can use notes! She's so great. :)
dr. kim is terrific - totally enthusiastic and really takes time to get to know the students. grading curve was a little tough, but i've hated physics-related anything so my grade was actually pretty nice. would take her any day.
The stuff covered in lecture is very basic and hardly related to labs. Quizzes are cake. Lab experiences are largely based on TAs- they can be randomly strict or easy going. Not a hard class, but put some effort into your lab reports.
Must do well on the lab reports and presentation. Overall, Dr. Kim is very helpful. The material is difficult but manageable with the TA and professor's help. Experiments are not long at all.
Her tests are incredibly hard for an undergraduate class. The problem is it's multiple choice so theres no partial credit. I COMPLETELY guessed on midterm and happened to score higher than those who actually knew how to do everything but made one calculation error and missed the entire question. Other than her tests, she is a pretty good lecturer.
her exams reflect neither her lectures nor her homework. they dont even reflect what she goes over during exam review. ask her a question in class, and she'll tell you to come to office hours. she even makes mistakes on the problems she works on in class. she's not fit to call herself an educator.
This professor has no business teaching lower division. She totally killed my interest in science. Her tests are ridiculously hard and she has no interest in her students actually learning anything. Overall... she sucks.
I do not believe in rating Professors as I think it quite harsh and unfair. HOWEVER, this Professor is RIDICULOUSLY difficult and unhelpful, thus for the first time I am compelled to say something! Of what has been said about her re CHEM 6B, I am in complete agreement. If you can, rather wait to find another Professor, even if it means postponing
prof kim is hard but a great teacher. she is very prepared and even holds her own review sessions for tests on the weekend, when i'm sure she has better things to do. her problems on the test are tricky, but she went to mit. i would rather be held to those standards than get an easy A. would definitely recommend her and will be taking her in the fu
ITS REALLY REALLY HARD. Lecture is not helpful at ALL. Compared to 6A, this class is very difficult. Due to the difficultness of this class, I lost interest in studying. Even if I studied, I failed the first midterm!!
she is the worst teacher i have ever had at ucsd!! horrible!! doesnt know how to teach undergrads and test are ridiculous! do not recommend ever!
Some of these comments are truly horrible. Yah, ur grades might be suffering because Prof Kim likes to test hard, but science is a very competitive field and you'll benefit from the kind of knowledge she's trying to give you. I'm struggling too, but this is the best class I'm taking this quarter. Just read the book and do the examples & u'll do ok
hardest chem teacher i took at ucsd...all her questions from the test are not in the hw or lecture...first midterm average was 38%, and over 60 students drop out..avoid at all cost for lower division science courses..but as a person, she's very nice and willing to help students
i had a B+ going into the final. I believe I just failed my final exam. Her tests never reflect what she teaches. After her first midterm, her reply to why her tests didn't cover the topics she talked about was "That's ridiculous! Why would I review the stuff I'm going to put on my test?" Because that's what a midterm review session is, you moron.
This was one of the hardest classes I've taken. Sometimes I got frustrated because all my studying didn't seem to make a difference on the tests. However, I think Kim is a good lecturer and she cares about her students. The averages were low but the curve makes up for it. Just read the book multiple times and work practice problems like crazy.
Great lecturer, HORRIBLE TESTS! Never taught undergrad class, graduated MIT, no wonder her tests are hard. She says science is a competitive field: i agree but a 30% ave for undergrad gen chem is a little "too much".
Here's some perspective: Midterm 1- multiple choice. Around 15 questions (i think?), TOTAL guess, got around four correct- ended up a B+. When guessing gets you higher grade then studying, something's wrong.
she is nice but crazy hard. she went to MIT + thinks everyone else did too. tests are unlike sample tests/ hmwrk. test probs are totally unique. grades on standard curve. removes any scores from those who drop which screws the curve b/c A LOT drop. she goes faster than you can learn. her notes = exactly the book. i get straight As and im struggling
Her lectures are VERY quick. It's hard to write everything down on the board. It's almost impossible to listen to her talk while writing everything down. HOWEVER she writes everything on the board very concisely. She really isn't as hard as other people say she is.
Her class is impossible. Midterms + Final = All Open Ended questions. She expects a lot! A LOT! It's as if we should understand as well as she does. Even her homework is ridiculously hard. I had to read the book to understand what she was teaching. She grades on a curve though so it's okay. But she's probably one of the hardest prof I've taken.
Ridiculously hard. Midterms and finals were completely different from what she taught.
The class wasn't that bad. Midterms were out of class and even on a friday night which sucked, but overall the tests were pretty fair. The final was pretty much questions straight out of lecture, even using the exact same numbers. I still felt I learned something and overall she taught well.
She really has a passion for chemistry. Be prepared to work hard and do a lot of calculations. Her midterms and final were mostly representative of the lectures/book and had good curves. Its not an easy class, but is not impossible either, just devote a lot of time to reading and understanding the formulas and concepts.
Very methodical class in terms of getting good grades. The quizzes are derived straight from the hw so as long as you do the hw and understand them. The exams are avg in difficulty, she drops hints here and there about what she may ask. Class was painfully boring but she was a good lecturer in terms of presenting info not entertainment.
8 minute quizzes on quantum mechanics. Good luck, lol
Difficult class for sure. Pop quizzes and in-class questions. Keep up with the hw but also REREAD lecture materials for the quizzes (I could have done so much better on quizzes had I reread the lectures). Exams easier than expected. Good prof overall. I got A's in both 126 and 127 with her.
easiest upper div chem class you will ever take. dont need to study at all to get an A+. quizzes were a joke, as well as the midterm and final. this IS THE CLASS to slack off in.
Kim makes you think she likes you, but she doesn't. She is completely incapable of teaching, cannot explain anything, knows nothing. Does she have a BS? Worst professor ever, probably got hired because a minority female. Unorganized lectures that go nowhere. Took her frustrations out on us on the final. Can't talk to her without her getting mad.
She is working against students' will for sure.
Quantum is a tough class and I don't think she's the best teacher, however at least she tries! She's super smart and thinks we are too...so some of her explanations go over our heads. But she holds extra weekend sessions to go over lecture material which help a lot. Her exams are also very fair. However, to do well you have to show up to class.
Fast-paced lectures, podcasts are your friend. Don't skip lectures or discussions. That said, Dr. Kim puts a lot of effort into making sure the tests are fair and the material is properly taught. You'll work for the A, but she'll help you work for it
Professor Kim is very passionate about chemistry and makes an effort to make sure her students have a grasp on the material. She holds reviewstudy sessions on sundays for extra practice. Her lectures move pretty fast so i'm very grateful that the lectures are podcasted. She has a pretty traditional lecturing style-- not very much humor.
She cares about her students and really tries to help them. She held study sessions every Sunday in addition to her own office hours. You can tell that she really wants her students to succeed. Curves are really generous. Homework is optional. However, the class is pretty fast-paced, and it's very difficult to stay awake in her class.
If you plan to take this class, expect to read ahead (really helped to anticipate what the lecture would cover) and go to office hours for clarification on some topics. Prof. Kim is always there to help, either through office hours or email. She is a fair grader, so the amount of effort you put into the class will be reflected by your grade.
Pretty good lecturer IMO but most of her slides are straight from the book. Talks really fast, so you might need to relisten to podcasts later on your own time. Make sure to read the book because she pulls a lot of stuff from the textbook for the tests and quizzes. Midterm and quizzes are like the homework and what she talks about in class .
A hard class for sure that definitely requires a study time commitment if you want to do well. Read the book, do the homework, watch the podcasts, and go over the keys for quizzes and exams. The curve is very generous. Overall, your grade is very reflective of what you learned in the course.
Attentive teacher, cares about your grade if you reach out to her first. Can't find myself grasping any concepts during lectures, but podcasts are super helpful and straight to the point. Do your homework, listen to every podcast, and study and you'll do fine. Material is hard, but I learned way more in this class than any class I've ever taken.
Professor Kim really expects you to understand the concepts. Her tests are difficult but the curve will be your friend. The only way I survived was reading the textbook, doing the homework, and listening to the podcasts multiple times. Although the class required a lot of hard work, I would definitely take it again because I learned so much.
This was a very challenging yet rewarding class. Honestly, the topics covered in chem 6ah are mainly quantum physics related, which I will probably never use again... but it was really interesting to study.
considerable and lovely. very difficult test . amazing lectures
Judy is an amazing professor for Chem 7L! It's her first time teaching it. She's so nice (she extended the lab deadline 3 times)! She really cares about chemistry. Lectures are helpful but kind of optional as long as you remember all of your material from chem 6C well and understand the experiment just by reading the manual. Labs are hard but fair.
For chem 7L, I understand this is her first year teaching the course, but for the exam she has no understanding that it is practically impossible to finish a short answer exam within 40 minutes. Also, her labs require a lot of time, and expects you to fully understand the lab to do well on the pre- lab quiz. I probably failed the class. GOOD LUCK!
Honestly, she's not a bad lecturer, but she has a poor understanding of timing. Just like the other review, she gave a 7 page free response exam in 40min (started late). She also mentioned that this first part of the exam was ALL calculation (verbally in lecture/physically in lecture slides) but the exam was more like 3/4 conceptual. Don't take.
The lecture is good but the exams are extremely hard, and the lab report would takes you more than 5 hours to finish. Do not take her class!!!!
I walked out of the final realizing how much I have learned in this class. Prof. Kim has been great in terms of her intelligence, consideration and clarity. She is definitely challenging and its hard because in order to keep up we put in so much effort in lab reports and end up being graded so meticulously but SHES FAIR so pls omg give her a break
Judy Kim looking like muriel dawg , she aight
This class was the worst experience I've had at UCSD and I'm in my third year. The most unfair and harsh grading you could ever imagine. DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR KIM. This class was taken WAY too seriously for a general chem lab, everyone in my section failed every lab report and the final was insane. The site wouldn't let me give her a 0.
All of these second year's and some third year's need to give Judy Kim a break. She was not the greatest, nor the worst. Given it was her first time teaching this lab; I wanna see some of y'all scrubs try. Yes, grading was rough... but stop being cut throat pre-meds and take it as a learning experience. 7L is tedious, was not going to be cake walk
A lot of students here seem salty about the harsh grading (she hasn't even released the lowered cutoffs yet guys!). Yes, it was difficult and required a lot of work for an introductory lab course, but it was also her first time teaching the lab. Her expertise made it a challenging but rewarding learning experience.
Her lectures were mostly boring and unhelpful, which I wouldn't mind, but she grades EXTREMELY harshly on lab reports, taking off huge chunks of your score for small mistakes. Not only this, but there was no feedback on what you did wrong, so you're bound to make the same mistakes. Final was poorly made, nobody had time to finish. Don't take her.
Way too tough on the grading for a introductory lab. Grades were always posted late, so you can't look at the feedback to improve on the next lab report. She takes off points extremely heavily on reports. I had 17% deducted from my FIRST lab report because i misplaced a decimal place (small calc error). Final was also unnecessarily difficult.
She is not a hard grader to be honest because she doesn't even do any of the gradings. If you faced any difficulties be ready to just suck it up because she will not understand it. The final is not hard but just long, most people would do much better if she didn't tell us to study for the wrong thing. She's definitely the worst professor I've had.
Podcast, podcast, podcast, or just go to lecture. Her lectures literally tell you everything you need to put on a lab report. That being said-work quickly. Quizzes and final aren't hard if you can work fast and do pre-lab questions. Take her-all lab reports are submitted electronically/typed, which is an advantage previous 7L courses never got.
Judy Kim was a mediocre lecturer and it was clear that she had never taught chem 7L before. She did not give clear instructions for what she wanted for each lab report which was essentially leading her students to fail. Her final upset a lot of students because it was 2 parts and although it was not extremely hard, we were not given enough time.
by far the worst prof i have ever had--dont take her!
She was objectively a really bad professor. Avoid her class if possible.
This class was taken way to seriously. There is no reason why an introductory lab needs to be graded at a C average. Plus, the exam/quiz questions were designed in a way that made it very difficult to study because the questions were frequently off topic or poorly phrased.
She isn't a bad person, but her lectures are not good at all, and her exams/grading methods are just way too serious for an intro chem lab. Have to choose all possible answer choices on her MC, and if you don't select one, you got it wrong (i.e: no reward for getting 2/3 answer choices right). TAs are super picky in grading lab reports too.
She is a too strict professor. This was much TOO HARD for an introductory course for chemistry. The TA are just as harsh without offering any help. Points were taken off for the stupidest things. She was never clear on the grading. Feedback on labs was freaking useless since it was never helpful. I wouldn't have minded the work if there was help.
Though she does have times when she offers help to students, she quickly moves on to the next person, because there are so many students there. This results in poor help for papers. In addition, the Help Center where tutors offer guidance is a shot in the dark. You either get someone who helps you well or confuses you ever more. Don't recommend.
The content of 7L is doable, but she makes this class so damn hard for an introductory Chemistry lab. ALL her tests and quizzes are multiple answer, with NO partial credit. Miss one word in a lab report? Lose 5 points! This class doesn't test ability to understand but ability to memorize the manual/her podcasts to minute detail. Wouldn't recommend.
Super hard. Lose points extremely easily. Don't take this course. My least favorite course this year.
There is more busy work in this class than anything else I have done at UCSD. Take it with a light as possible load. Every week you have to re-write the lab procedure in your own words and the TA actually checks it. Then a tricky quiz that tests nothing. Then a lab report that takes at least 6 hours to write. Other professors make this way easier.
CHEM 7L being a lab class, the course is more heavily impacted by your TA than the professor. That being said, Professor Kim is a decent choice for 7L. Lectures were fairly clear, if not extremely useful. Lab reports were graded harshly. Exams/quizzes were generally fair, but prepare for many "choose all correct answers" multiple choice questions.
She gives too many tough quizzes and is really critical of the lab reports. Once I handed in a regrade form because I thought I was right about something. But she refused my request and took off some points because she found a new error! I felt like I had spent quite some time for a worse result! She really cares too little for students.
Take CHEM 7L with anybody else. Good luck writing a 5 page report every week in this class. She assures the class the grading will be lenient then does not curve?
That class was totally a mess. She made everything unnecessarily complicated and tested us on too many details that only those chem freaks would know the answers. Lab reports were heavy and i basically had to start a new report immediately after submitting the previous one. That class smothered. Ended up dropping.
Talks too fast, doesn't provide a good rubric for the experiments until after they are graded, harsh grader, asks for questions without looking up from her laptop, doesn't give students time to think of questions before she moves on.
Just do not take her class.
Professor Kim tests are difficult if one does not prepare for them by reading the lab manual and the lecture slides. Labs are fun but tedious print lab manual and bring to lab. Lab reports are even more tedious, but plenty of opportunities to get help. In summary, actually, study for exams, read and print lab manual, and get help when you need it.
Professor is honestly not very understanding when it comes to the grading scale. She bases the curve off of the highest grade in the class (usually some person who loses 50 points out of the total 1000). The labs are enjoyable but she makes everyone super stressed with the way she grades quizzes and lab reports. Don't take her if like good grades.
I enjoyed working in the lab. However your grade depends on lab reports and quizzes which are super arbitrary. Office hours helped some but it seemed impossible to satisfy her mysterious lab report rubrics. I put as much time into this class as organic chemistry where I got an A, and I got a B+ in 7L :/
YOU WILL REGRET TAKING HER CLASS!! Her quizzes are ridiculously hard. Lab reports are graded hard. She doesn't specify the specific information she wants us to include in lab reports, and then points were taken away. DON'T TAKE HER.
Judy Kim is a good professor. All the info to do well in the lab reports is literally in the podcast. Her quizzes are difficult, but usually everyone does bad on them so it's ok. Also, people talk about her being a hard grader when in reality it's all about the TA you get. If you're struggling go to OH, she's very helpful and genuinely cares
The grading scale is way too tough, and it seems almost impossible to get a good grade on the lab reports.
I can't account for her in the past, but Judy Kim is a pretty fair teacher. Instead of giving pre-lab quizzes, she now gives post lab quizzes. About half your grade is determined by lab reports which are graded strictly, but not to bad if you follow and understand lecture. As a teacher, she is nice and passionate in teaching students about lab.
Im actually surprised to see that many people disliked her in previous classes. All the information you need to do good on the quizzes and midterm are literally in the podcasts. I do believe that the lab reports werent graded as fairly as they could have been since she doesnt release the rubric. But overall, she is a GOOD professor!
Prof Kim has definitely made 7L a more manageable class. Yes, this class is hard, but she provides all the resources necessary to do well in the class. The quizzes are now post lab and are literally based on what she says in lecture/podcast. Office hours are great and the lab reports are generally clear on what she wants. It's possible to do well!
Can't speak for previous quarters but honestly she was pretty reasonable. Quizzes given after lab and class was curved by a few percent. Past reviews might not apply anymore as it seemed she has changed quite a bit.
Judy Kim's CHEM 7L class was a pleasure to be in. Albeit, the grading is difficult at times so it is crucial to work your way for a good grade. Luckily there is a good time for office hours before large assignments, such as lab reports are due. Nicely, quizzes are after the lab is done, which is different from the past years of her instruction.
Judy Kim is much better now. She genuinely cares about the students. Lectures are not mandatory. However, she gives her tests during lecture. Her quizzes are very doable if you memorize the lab procedures. Final is pretty chill. Lab is actually fun if you get a good TA. Overall, the class is not bad and i would take her again. She is really nice!
I did well in lab without attending lectures. Her lectures could be definitely helpful, but she didn't keep me engaged in the class. Her expectations are really high, thus her grading can be pretty tough. I had technical difficulties that resulted in a late lab report submission-- i emailed her 3 times and received no response.
I had an 8,000 character CAPE review for this professor, but this site has a limit of 350. In summary, she gives you too little time to complete exams and quizzes, puts far too much of an emphasis on significant figures to the point where your grade will drop from an A to a C just because of it, and will test you on things not even done in lab.
I would rather take a 25 unit quarter and swim in a pool of lemon juice with paper cuts all over my body than take another class with her.
sig figs :( Regrade forms for lab reports never work. 1000 pts in total, I lost 20 points on all the tests, quizzes, midterm and final, but 5* that number on lab reports due to some weird staffs she would never explain.
Your GPA will sink in this class. Just don't even consider taking it with her. Her lab reports will kill you because she's out there trying to find little mistakes like sig fig and then deduct you 50 points for having one less decimal place.
Not sure why people give her 1 star reviews. Yeah, she's a tough grader and I didn't do so hot in the class but she's actually really good at explaining chemistry concepts, especially the assumptions. I think she needs to put less emphasis on the lab reports, especially sig figs, but I think everything else in the class is okay.
The class has a lot of information. She is very good at explaining the material and what is required to do well on quizzes/ lab reports. Podcasts are really helpful for writing lab reports and studying for tests since there is so much information to cover. Overall, she is very clear with what info you need to know and really good at teaching it.
From my experience, Judy Kim does not care about her students. I actually enjoyed labs because I had a really good TA. A lot of the points are graded using data uploaded to TritonEd, so if you make a tiny mistake in your calculations you wont earn any points. If you can afford to wait and take CHEM 7L with a different professor, you should.
I dont know why her reviews are so negative, I thought she was a completely fair professor. My only complaint would be the heavy emphasis on sig figs. Other than that, she is EXTREMELY clear on how she will grade, what will be on tests, etc. If you just go to class / podcast she will spoon-feed you the answers. Dont be scared of her.
Honestly, this was my first quarter at UC San Diego and this class was so difficult for me. Most of the material is review but the tests/quizzes she gave out were completely different than her practice quizzes/tests. It's expected that you know the material inside out and know how to follow calculations without numbers.
She is pretty tough, with numerous lab reports that are very specific (down to the decimal) and it's easy to lose points if you aren't detailed. It is possible to do well but you must address everything from sig figs to why an error has an impact. No attendance for lecture. Pre-lab quizzes are simple; post-lab quizzes are understanding based.
She is somewhat a tough grader and she does care about details. However, her lecture is awesome and she makes everything clear. She cares more about calculation and concepts. For the crystal making experiment, you get all the points for doing the right calculation even though you totally messed up the expt.
Shes a good teacher. Shes very clear about what to do with the labs so you wont find yourself lost. But, the tests do have a time constraint if you arent that fast of a test taker. Especially the midterm & 2nd quiz. Labs are graded a little too seriously imo. They arent really legit reports so I dont understand the attention to meticulous details.
The hardest part of the class are the lab reports, which have a mysterious grading scheme. However, if you work hard on those your quizzes/exams will be easy. If you mastered gen chem/ap chem the lectures won't be worth your time, but still scroll through the podcasts since she gives tips on the lab reports.
Judy Kim's lectures were semi-helpful but overall didn't make much sense. The lab reports take a lot of time and do not have a very clear grading criteria. the final was very difficult and only had about half of the thing we had actually learned in lab, everything else were very minor details. must be on top of things in this class.
In this class, a huge chunk of your grade goes to quizzes and your final which makes it difficult. There is a standard deviation curve, so if you want to pass, score close to average. Also, practice problem sets were very helpful. She is not the best teacher, goes over very in depth topics very fast, but she does make herself available for help.
solid prof - comprehensive lectures that do move quickly, but she is more than happy to help students outside of class. also curves generously
The quizzes were fairly difficult but the final was one of the hardest tests I have taken here. The class itself is hard but doable if you make a study group and go to discussion. Understanding the homework assignments and practice problems in lecture is important.
Obviously 126 sucks, but Prof Kim really tries to ensure you know the content and will do well. Office hours are long and helpful. Class overall is curved and while exams are close note and challenging, everyone does bad so the curve is large. Overall would recommend Prof Kim for 126 as she actually cares about the students.
The worst professor I have taken at my 4 years at ucsd. She constantly makes mistakes during her lectures and skips over calculation steps to save time. I mean if you want your class to be graded on 95% exams then by all means take her. Her exams are extremely difficult.
The final was the hardest final I have ever taken. It was suppose to be a cumulative final but instead focuses mainly on just the last 1/4 of the class which made no sense. The class it's self is very hard and encompasses a over a lot of material and it is difficult to manage even for the studious.
All she does in lecture is read from the lecture slides, her explanations are not in depth. There is an exam EVERY TWO WEEKS, starting from week 3 of the quarter. None of the exam grades can be dropped either, and all of the exams are CUMULATIVE. The homeworks worth only 5% of the grade are at least 10 pages long. Do not recommend.
CHEM126 is a tough class, but Prof. Kim genuinely wants students to succeed. Attend lectures, form study groups, and use tools like unstuck AI to prepare for the challenging exams. With effort, the curve makes it manageable.
