Ok if you do your work, if you slack, its your own fault. Very nice, friendly
so detailed, a detail freak!
Explains things very thouroughly and exams, although hard, are fair.

She put me to sleep, i couldnt handle her. Take it with someone else
i recommend you drop her, despite the rumors around campus saying shes the easier one..Take heady. This woman focuses too much on details. Exams are like 8 pages long, all essay.
Very hard.I put 15 hours/week to study for Bio and I'm a low A in class, but she is very knoledgeable and very helpfull. If you want to learn Bio 130, take this class. After finishing it, you'll know it.
Great professor. Pay attention in class and do all review questions, adding notes to text material and you will get an A. Just put a some work into the class and you'll be more than fine!
Pay attention in class and you'll do well. Very nice and was always there to answer questions
She is an extreamly intelligent woman. You could ask her anything, and she will explain it to you, and make sure that you understand what she meant. Even if the topic had nothing to do with the class. She is a hard teacher, but you learn alot!!
Definately not an easy class, but if you work hard, read, do the review questions, and make an effort, you'll do well. Her tests are NOT all essay; long? Yes, 6-8 pgs. Essay; No, but she does require more than one word answers on 75% of the questions.
One of the first classes I took at UMD. She writes down everything, is helpful, is strict in lab, exams are precise indeed but if you study the correct way you can get a good grade. Wish she taught upper level classes since she is so clear. Overall, A-
She seems like a hard teacher, but as the class goes on.. it gets easier. I got C*s on all my tests but I did good in lab and i ended up gettin a B in the class. you need to pay attention in class and take LOTS of notes!!
First professor I had at UM-D after transferring from Wayne State. Really nice lady, makes you work for your A, but it can be done. BIO notebook was lonngggggg, but exams aren't too bad. Miss those times-
After taking this class you WILL learn bio. Although, you can work really hard in this class and still get only a B. She does not grade on a curve and does not give out A's
She is a great professor and truly understands what she is talking about...you will completely understand bio once you take this class. She is always willing to help her students, but she is not an easy A. You will have to work, but it is worth it.
Extremely Smart lady knows what she is talking about, very knowledgeable. very nice to talk too. Tests are hard though
PLEASE TEACH UPPER LEVEL BIO COURSES!!! IM BEGGING YOU
She actually makes sure that you learn the material, therefore, you actually have to go to class. If you're looking for a super easy class, this is not it! She makes it interesting and you WILL learn a lot. Also, she does give out A's!
This class is a 100 level class that is taught as a 300 level Majors class. She is a good teacher who knows the subject well, but expect to work VERY hard to get a decent grade. If you're not a Biology major - don't take this class!
The person below is right. This class is for Bio majors! Nesmith makes that clear in the very beginning of class. She is an awesome professor and her class is easy! She does give out A's, and they are not very hard to get. All you have to do is do the review questions...they cover the whole exam
She is a very smart woman & knows what she is talkin about. Understood its for bio majors, but its taught like its a 300 level course! She grades really hard on the tests & wants you to be very specific. Be prepared to take alot of notes & tests are pretty much short essay formant.
Nesmith was a good professor. She is articulate and clear. However, she lacks social grace.
FIrst off do not get stuck in her lab class, almost everyone scored lower in lab than all the other lab sections. Plus you almost never get out of lab on time. Get your hands on the previous exams and your set. No need to pick up a book, good notes are only needed.
Um, I found lecture pretty boring, but as a person she was extremely smart in what she was lecturing. I liked her alot, but as everynoe else said, her tests are really hard, and getting an A, isn't impossible, but you will have to work really hard for it!
Good (but boring) lectures, extremely difficult tests. Doesn't seem to take an interest in the non-science majors. Even one of her grad. students said she teaches this class way too hard for this level.
Difficult tests. No multiple choice, all fill in the blank and short essay. Very clear in explanations and lectures.
Very smart and very arrogant about it. The tests were easy, it was the GRADING that was ridiculously hard. You'll do well on those tests if you know exactly what she was thinking that particular moment that she was writing the questions. Not horrible, but avoid if possible.
i thought it was kinda odd how she ran the classroom - it felt like 4th grade. she needs to remember she's teaching adults, not kids! not a hard teacher tho.
very clear, great way in explaining.
Don't ever take her in the summer, way too much info. to grasp. Also, her so called reveiw for the exam is the class asking questions. No questions asked=No reveiw. However, she is nice and seems to want to help, but I think her exams are difficult and tricky. It was a very stressful class. GOOD LUCK!!
Nesmith is hott!!! I'm not a BIO major but managed an A in her class. She will make you work really hard for it though. So don't BS around, take notes WORD FOR WORD or else you will not do well on her tests.
Her class is ok..but you have to be wide awake to make it though that class. She likes to repeat herself over and over and over. It is Nuts!! O yeah and make sure that you explain every detail in your anwsers on anything you trun in. She will mark you down for the smallest things!
Hmmm....what can I say. She explains things very well, and is very friendly. However she needs to remember that this is not Bio 500, its an entry level class!!!!! The class is way to hard for what it is, its nuts. Then you have a 4 hour lab every week....hmmm...thats 7 hours of class a week, then add the time for studying, 72% class test averages.
She is a very good instuctor, and even though it is a difficult class, her review questions are very helpful. You just have to study alot, and she is very picky about your answers to test questions.
Coming from someone who couldn't care less about science... she is WONDERFUL. If you're serious about teaching than she'll take you seriously. Missing class is bad idea: its pretty much a new concept everyday. TAKE HER
Shes a wonderful person-she teaches really well and explains very good-her tests r hard, they require alot of studying-shes not an easy A but and easy B!i would take her.
She acts as if this an an English course. She grades the science portion of a portfolio & quality of writing the same. I would think the science would have more value. She favors students over others. If she likes you she will help you more & if she doesnt ur screwd. If you had, Professor Kaller, & thought she favored students then ur WRONG!!
nice helpful teacher who explains very well, tests are hard but arent ridiculous, just require students to study, which they're supposed to do anyways, she requires too much detail in essays tho , but over all good class
She is not a hard teacher...Her tests might look bad but all you have to do is study...We all should be used to that by now. There is a lot to know per test but like i said just study and you should do just fine... Try finding a study partner or group cuz that really helps with me.
Very good professor, she is extremely helpful! Do not blow off this class you learn a lot of ideas in class and the tests are a lot easier if you have listened. Also study from the book the tests are not easy
Stupid teacher, complete waste of time. She treats the class as it is a upper level class, not intro level. Complete jerky teacher, is a snotty lady.
Try a diffrent teacher or you will be forced to devot ALL of your time to studying for these hard tests.
Just stay away from this teacher.
CRAZY TEACHER
Terriable
She grades hard on her tests and always keep up with review questions!!! Her tests are part multiple choice and part short answers. It's not a easy class. have to put 110% to get a B!
Great professor. She's hard, but you always know what's on the exams and quizzes. She's really nice and will help you after class if you need it. Book reading is not very important, everything on the exams is on her review questions.
forget it, shes a waste of time, she doesnt know to to teach
..She is awesome..good professor and she smiles.
She was the best NSCI teachers i have had at umd. I hate science, but her class was not bad. I learned a lot and she made it an enjoyable experience. Take her over Hartshorn...trust me it the best choice you make!
Very clear and organized teacher.Once you have a teacher like Adler, Nesmith looks very easy. She actually gives you review questions to help you focus on what material will be featured on exams. She is always willing to help in office hours/e-mail.She gives relatively difficult exams, but they're not impossible by any means.I would take her again.
Professor Nesmith's lectures are very good--she stresses any important points you may need to know. Exams are worth 15% of your grade each, so make sure you do the review questions since most of the exam is based off of them. I also recommend her for lab; she's very helpful and brings treats every morning for us :).
Professor Nesmith is the bomb! Very helpful, she will stay after class as long as she can to talk. Lab attendance is part of the grade, but she makes early labs better with goodies. :)
nesmith has weird exams, i got an A with adler and a B with nesmith...thats just not right :(...
This professor is awesome, she is very clear and makes the class interesting. Not an easy class but challenges you enough to keep you interested. She is very good with explaining things and also returns papers and tests promptly with all of the answers. All in all Nesmith is awesome!!!
i dont even know where to start this is by far the worst class i took in my life the amount of info covered on each test is insane and u have to bust ur a** studying just to get a c. no matter how detailed u are its never enough for her. her tests are disgusting and graded so weird. shes a nice lady but her class really grosses me out
im not a lazy student and i usually get A's but this class was the worst. theres so much info to study that u cant comprehend it.ever heard of a final stapled to a regular exam to take together..thats what she does!ever heard of 75 review questions for one exam..thats her!its a basic subject made complicated.her answer choices are literally a-j!!
DO NOT EVEN BOTHER!!!! even if u can stay awake long enough to grasp what she says u cant even hear her she literally whispers. dont even come to class if ur gonna sit in the back. getting passed this u have to devote all ur time and its almost impossible to get an a. but i did like her gingerbread pin that she wore : )
Great teacher and has awesome teaching skills if you want to learn. Will take her again.
She was sure to cover all test material in class and in lab (both mandatory) so if you're sure to pay close attention the material is not very hard to understand. Would definately take her again.
Loved her. I wish she taught the lecture too! She is always willing to help you and answer your questions. She's known as a tough grader, but she just expects you to do what is asked. I recommend her!
Unnecessarily hard exams. Very vague during lecture about what you need to know. Exam questions are written in the most confusing way she could think of. Worst of all, she does not curve. I wish I could have have gone back and took somebody else. Even Adler would have been better.. Too bad he doesn't teach 130
She is so nice and her lectures are great! She is really easy to understand. She expects a lot from her students so be prepared to do a lot of work. When you take her tests you feel as though you do well but your grade never turns out as good as you would have hoped for because she is a VERY hard grader.
As a 1st semester freshman, taking this class was a big mistake. This class requires all your time and energy just to get a passing grade. Her tests are beyond hard and are designed to confuse you, not to make sure you know the information. However she was a very nice person and was always available for questions.
her test are extremely intense you have multiple choice a-g she does it just to confuse you. i would take another professor if you could
Very clear in her speech. Make lots of sense and comes to class very well prepared. Makes every effort to help student understand materials. If you really like biology or nature, you will absolutely enjoy her class.
Nesmtih does a great job at lecturing the material, makes it pretty easy to understand while writing. She gives A-G usually on the mult.choice tests, but just focuses on knowing the material rather than being able to guess from 4 choices. Her labs are the longest i've seen, but are smooth and feel quick, definitely worth it.
Professor nesmith is an excellent professor at umd.. Shes nt easy though.. U need to take notes in class.. Her tests are like 7 choices last 3 of them are a but c b but c d but not a .. So u have to study.. Overall if u keep up on reading the chapters and notes do the review questions ull be more than fine
She is very hard when it comes to testing, you have to know the material inside and out. Her multiple choice includes a,b,c,d,a&b, b but not c etc...very hard to decifer...do not take unless you are a strong bio student
I hope you read the blogs about this lady before you take a class with her. If you are looking to receive a bad grade, waste your time and your money with trying to study for multiple test that go A through H, this is the class for you. DON?T TAKE THIS CLASS!!! P.S. if you are not one of her favorites, watch out!!
Professor Nesmith was one of the best professors that I've had in a very long time! Her test are only difficult if you don't study. It isn't helpful to just memorize the material you should also try to understand it! I ended up with an A from the class and I would take her again.
Her exams are insane!! she calls them "multiple, multiple" cuz there are like 6 answer choices!! But she is very helpful and she actually teaches the class. She is very passionate about bio.
Dropped because it was too much for an entry level course. Oh and to those who said take her instead of Hartsorn for NCSI, What is wrong with you people?
She seems knowledgeable regarding the subject however she is unable to convey that knowledge to students, and a lot of her slides are copied out of the textbook word for word. Her exams are ridiculous. I wouldn't recommend her or this school to anyone.
The class is not very difficult, yes hard multi choice questions but not impossible, go to S.I even if you think you are too smart for it, she gives the S.I. instructor questions from the test that will 100% show up on the test. The material is boring though unless you love studying worms and nematoda in detail and at great volumes
The class was extremely hard and I felt as though and immense amount of information was being crammed into my knowledge at once making it very hard to remember it all. Once the exam was given, there was so much to know which made it very stressful. Very nervewracking course. I have never had this much touble in Biology before...
This class was a mess. She not only teachers as fast as she can and expects you to know the material just like that, but her tests are insane!!!! She has multiple choice tests with like a-h options and the end ones are a and b, b and c, c and d not e. Trust me, its not fun. If the class average was like a D on every test, I think theres a problem.
She's not a bad professor, really. She actually KNOWS the material and teaches it pretty well. But it's her exams that are awful. She wants you to apply concepts and not just memorize for the sake of the exam. Do not take if you aren't a bio/science major.
If you like the biology subject, you do not want to miss her class. She is highly knowledgeable with the subject which makes the class interesting. I didn't care much about biology before taking her class in 2004 that I found interesting. The best advice I can offer is to tape her lecture and hear it over which is something I wish that I did.
This class is fairly easy (for a science class) if you pay attention and study the notes. Sometimes her test questions can be a bit tricky because there are usually 5 answer choices per question. If you fill in and really study the reviews she posts online before the exams though, you should be able to do well on the exams. Take her for lab too!
Honestly my favorite teacher. Never have i had such a detailed and enjoyable bio class. Nesmith knows everything there is and is so passionate and excited about biology. I love this professor.
I hated this class. Avoid if you're a bio major or not. VERY hard tests. Multiple choice answers range from A to G. Tests designed to kill your grade. Expects you to sink in info easily, especially with the terminology, and it shows with her testing and lectures. Don't blink an eye, or you'll lose a grade level.
Knows A LOT about Biology, makes her exams harder than they should be. Just work hard and study her powerpoints thoroughly. Class will not be easy, but it is very possible to do well.
AWEFUL. Exams are very difficult. She gives multiple choice options A-H! Very confusing and boring lectures. If it weren't for having a different lab professor I would not have passed.
She is overall a very good teacher but not an easy one. Taking the time to review lectures and read/skim the book will help you understand the class material and prepare you for her difficult exams. Although the class is hard, she is very friendly and willing to help if you are struggling. Lab is super easy and will help boost your grade.
Really don't like the way this professor teaches. She presents info on a powerpoint and expects us to memorize literally hundreds of terms about the unit. Expects you to become a walking encyclopedia for her tests. No concepts are taught, just terms that you'll forget right after the test. People like her are why science classes get a bad rap.
The A-G multiple choice is no joke. She is a sweet woman, but I felt so unintelligent in her class. This class definitely made me dislike bio, and I love science.
I actually really liked Professor Nesmith! She is great at explaining the material but you do have to study. She does have the A-G multiple choice options but it's only hard when you haven't studied. Take a little extra time to study for lab quizzes because they are a worth a good part of your grade. Not hard, just a lot of memorizing.
I really enjoyed this class. She is very helpful and there's an SI there to help you too. Although her tests are A-G, they aren't too hard if you've studied and if the majority of the class got a question wrong she would give everyone extra points for that question. If you don't study the night before and study a bit daily you'll do great!
Multiple choice does range from A-H, but they are not difficult! Professor Nesmith makes sure that everyone understands the material. Her class is extremely interesting and I would recommend her to anyone! She offers an extra credit question on every exam and usually curves it by one or two points. Her class is very fair.
Tests include short answer and multiple choice. However, the multiple choice is A-G which is pretty confusing. Attend SI and ask questions when you need to. Gives quizzes every week and lab quizzes every lab you attend. Labs are very long and she lectures the whole time. I would not recommend taking her, but if you do, study hard. Not an easy A.
A great teacher, taught the material very well, and her examples are excellent. A classy lady. Def would take again. Tip: Study the powerpoints very well.
Not very approachable. She expects you to be an expert on every single subject. Her multiple choice sections are ridiculous. She doesn't care if you succeed and she does the bare minimum to get you prepared for he exams
Her multiple choice ranges from a-h but thats not the hard part. The hard part is that you need to be an expert on every topic in order to discern the correct answers due he ridiculous difficulty of the choices you're presented with. Terrible professor would never take again
She is great professor. You just need to put your mind to it and study the learning objectives for the tests. Seriously!! Those objectives will help sooo much. She explains everything in detail and gives relatable examples. Attendance is a must and studying at least an hour everyday.
I absolutely hated this class with a passion. Hardest class I've ever taken. Exams are crazy hard and detailed. Took her class not warned. BEWARE! Take anyone else if you can. No curved even if you are at a .99.
Absolutely hated this class. The information is simple but she makes it so much harder!!!! Do not take this class or lab with her. I probably Will retake this course. This is an a student speaking.:(
Dr. Nesmith is the best! She knows so much about the subject and makes sure that you understand it. She is hard on her students but if you are planning to go to med school or grad school, you may need that extra push! Her tests are hard but fair and she is always there to help you! I did well in her class, you just have to put the time in!
Professor Nesmith is one of the best professors i ever had. Her lectures are crystal clear and she answers all questions. Pay attention in class, and absolutely study the power points and be able to think critically in class you will do great.
Her tests are what make this course unbearable. A-F , multiple choice, and more than one answer may be correct. The class is designed to fail students, and is 95% memorization. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone.
I LOVED her. Ppl on here complaining just didnt study. She is a great biologist. I got a high A in her class. If you love bio, take her. Learned a lot, had her for lab too and i recommend. She is a sweet lady, helpful, and i would take her again for sure. Didnt use the book at all. Exams straight from lectures. Tests were NOT hard if you study!
Understood all of the concepts, and discussed them with peers effortlessly in study sessions. Her exams didn't capture what I learned -- I had a C in the class and I asked her how I could improve, i.e. go to SI, go to office hours, etc, and she told me to just drop the class because I would fail; horribly discouraging.
This class was such a pain. I love bio so i understood the subject matter, but her grading was so hard. MEMORIZE and be able to understand the power points. Go to class because she makes you do clicker questions, and you lose points for not doing them. Overall, unless you really plan on working hard, or going into this field, don't take this class
Okay.... Professor Nesmith is a great biologist. But, her exams are rough!!! If you have no other choice but to take this class, I encourage you to ONLY study from her powerpoint notes & lecture notes. Honestly, shes great at being a biologist, but as a professor she is one hard grader, especially for a 130 class. POWERPOINT NOTES ONLY!! No book!!!
Nesmith is a very nice professor, if you need help and ask for it, she is willing to help. The class itself needs too much work, her exams are unbelievably difficult. Don't expect an easy A.
For an into class there are a lot of items covered. By far the hardest class I have ever taken here. She will ask you to teach yourself several concepts that she does not get to in class and it is tough. The book did not help much but SI really did. Her exams are long and she has over ten short answer. Her questions range from A-G.
Absolutely wonderful professor! I had her for lab as well as lecture which made learning biology much more comprehensive. Yes, her tests are longer, but that should not be a reason to avoid taking her. You're in University now, expect to apply yourself. Fun fact, Nesmith owns 5 different colored Fitbits that she coordinates w/ her outfits every day
Nesmith is a great professor! She is almost always available during office hours, and is very helpful in clearing up confusion/explaining difficult concepts. Lectures are very detailed but you have access to her power points so its OK if you get behind on notes. 4 challenging exams- multiple choice/free response. STUDY HARD. Attend SI sessions!
People complain that her exams are difficult, which they are if you don't study. They are completely based on her lecture powerpoints, so don't buy or read the textbook. Make sure to review her slides a lot before exams and you will be fine. Show up to class to get credit for clicker questions. Exams have multiple choice and lots of short answer.
Not sure why Professor Nesmith gets such a bad rap. Shes a great professor, knows what shes talking about and is very passionate in her field. She truly cares about her students and is very kind. Her class is tough, but this is a university and youre expected to work hard. Exams are hard and long, but if you know the material, youll be fine.
Don't get me wrong, her lecture style is great, but her tests are borderline impossible. This is an INTRO class, yet she relies on the fact that some of us may or may not have learned a lot of the material in high school. Way too much information for an intro class. The tests are too in depth. I pull all-nighters and still do not do well on exams.
Ok, so first of all she is a nice person. BUT!!!!!! She has one of the worst systems ever. Exams are A-E because she claims that she wants you to understand it better like for real? Who cares? I just want to study and get my grade lady..... All in all! If you peeps want a miserable semester, white hair, extra stress and anxiety, this class for u
Prof Nesmith is super nice and caring. As a prof shes passionate abt bio & good at explaining Her tests are *extremely* difficult so study ur butt off & no cramming unless u want to fail. Lab is worth 2 tests basically. Clicker questions are worth a test (14%) so dont bs. Class is 4 tests and a final (final was canceled for us). Forget the book.
Her test are difficult, but if you take good notes and really listen to her lectures, you can pass them. Her SI sessions also really helped me grasp the material that was taught, but if I still did not understand something, she was very easy to get ahold of. She also offered a good amount of extra credit.
This is a bio class so just expect it to be hard. Any college bio class will feel impossible. Professor Nesmith is an excellent professor though. Her tests are crazy hard but it sort of balances out because shes a wonderful lecturer. If you listen, and take notes on the slides BEFORE going to that lecture, you will be fine. Just go to SI and study
By far worst professor Ive had at UMD. Toughest grader with unrealistic expectations. She is very rude, especially when you confront her about how poorly she graded ur assignment. Had a high A in bio lecture but was failing lab because of her. DO NOT TAKE.
I absolutely adore Professor Nesmith! She posts everything online. She specifically lectures in a way that a 5 year old could understand. She wants to make sure that you clearly understand the material. Exams are SUPER tough IF you don't study her powerpoints nor go to SI sessions. GO! Prepare beforehand! The exams are not bad at all if u do prep.
Professor Nesmith is an excellent lecturer and such a nice person. She is very clear about what is expected of you and the class is very structured. SI sessions will help a lot to understand the concepts, but attend class, put in the work to learn the concepts and you will do well on the exams.
plz don't take this professor, like forget you even looked at this page, i promise you'll hate it
Professor Nesmith is an excellent lecturer. She always gives analogies in class to make the material easier to understand. If you put effort in to studying you will do good on the tests. She provides you with plenty of resources to make sure you succeed. I learned a lot from her and overall found the class enjoyable.
Great lectures. She is very engaging and easy to talk to. You need to show up to class every day. Also a tough grader. You must study!
Absolutely loved this professor. Tests are multiple choice A-G but she gives you learning objectives that outline everything you need to know. Questions are very straightforward. Always available outside of class and loves to help her students. A challenging course, but definitely do-able. Wish I could have a prof like her for every class!
The study guides are essential as all of the content ended up being on the exams. Pop quizzes before every lab but if you studied the material beforehand you should be fine. Also, she didn't waste time in the lab which was helpful to get the work done and out.
she is very sweet but you are better off taking it with someone else. If i could go back id take a different professor. Her exams are very difficult with multiple choices from A-G and can have multiple answers and if the short answer isn't word for word from her lecture, its wrong. unless you spend 3+ hours everyday for her, you wont do so hot. RUN
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Don't trust the people that gave her positive reviews. Half of the students dropped the class because of how bad it was. Her quizzes are really difficult and she doesn't help, it's like she sets you up for failure.
There is no way that you will pass this course no matter how much you study. She doesnt care about her students, she expected us to drive to campus for wifi connection during covid. She doesnt give extensions. No test or quiz make ups. Will not respond to your emails. This is a warning. If you still decide to take her God help you and your gpa.
The other reviews must have had another professor. This woman was patronizing when asked a question - if she didn't just ignore you, dismissive of students who needed help and unwilling to go over questions many got wrong. I went through this whole class without knowing what was wrong or why on every exam. Everyone isn't meant to teach online.
She failed me and gave me an E, because she caught me violating the university policy on WhatsApp.
She was a very nice professor, but she does make sure that you work for this class, so be prepared! She is a little bit here and there sometimes with her lectures, but she really goes in depth to help you understand this topic.
She didn't listen to half of her class telling her that we had not covered the material in lab that she was going to be testing us over. She told us that we should have attended a different lab section if we wanted to know the material, the class avg was 40% on the exam. She claimed to not know we hadn't covered it yet. Lost my respect.
Doesn't know how to adapt to remote school
Her zooms were tough to be in due to her condescending behavior towards the minorities in class. It felt as if they were being disrespected for no reason
Worst professor I have ever had. I can't believe she is an educator because it seems as if all she wants to do is see her students fail. I mean most the students in her class have failed it before so that should tell you all you need to know.
Coming from an Ann Arbor graduate, this is by far the hardest science course I have taken in my academic career. Unless you have all the time in the world to devote to this class I suggest you stray away from this course and Professor.
Terrible lecturer, doesn't take time to explain concepts, constantly refers you to the SI's who also don't know what's going on and are given incorrect answers directly from Nesmith. She also made students buy a lab book because her name was credited on it so she could make an earning from her in-debt students. Please save yourself and your future.
Wallah forget you ever came here. Don't even consider it
Horrible educator. She has been flagged by the university and has been reviewed multiple times by the university due to her extreme difficulty of tests and teaching styles.
Professor Nesmith is a true master in the trade. Tons of resources are provided to be successful in this course, such as providing the class with supplemental videos.I forgot to mention that she provides extra credit. I do agree that her exams are hard but it's doable, so good study habits are enforce as an incentive do good on her exams.
I cannot find the words to describe the poor conditions of this course and professor. As a student, you are supposed to reach your teacher halfway, in terms of learning, however, Nesmith will not meet you near halfway. You will end up spending many more hours on this course than compared to any course you have previously taken in your education.
Please save yourself the money and time and avoid taking this professor or course. Do not recommend this teacher to anyone else as she has proven to be one of the most difficult teachers to work with. Lack of care for her students and impossible tests leave you wondering if you chose the right class and even school.
As a freshman coming into a university for the first time I did not know what to expect. I was expecting a welcoming environment and encouraging teachers, however, Nesmith is the complete opposite. As a minority woman, I did not feel as if I got treated equally compared to the men in this course. Nesmith's behavior only encouraged the behavior.
The single worst educator I have ever had in my entice academic career. She does not care for her students or provide help when the class average for a quiz is 40%. It's tough to be an aspiring medical student when you have put in hours upon hours studying for exams because there are no helpful provided resources.
She holds onto her authority with so much grip as if it is the last thing she can control given her white privilege. I will try to make this not about race, however, it is hard for me to talk about anything else when it comes to this professor. Listen to me or listen to former students... this professor is known for her prejudices.
I wouldn't recommend taking her since she acts like she is the gatekeeper for medical school. She tries to discourage students from pursuing a career in medicine instead of uplifting them in their desires. She wears a persona of an innocent old professor when in reality she is the complete opposite--except for the old part, she is truly a dinosaur.
I am lost at how Judy Nesmith is able to sleep at night knowing her entire class is failing and crying for help. Wouldn't a normal professor be bothered by this? You see, that's where the distinction lies with this prof. Trust me, save yourself this GPA-ruining class by completing your registration early so you can avoid ever taking this professor.
Listen to all of these people's reviews. What type of professor has 10+ dislikes on the top rating? In short, she takes advantage of her students through her "authority." All I have to say is, "RUN, FORREST, RUN!"
She comes off as very prideful and is often patronizing. We recently had a quiz (another impossible A-F format) and she provided no explanations for the questions that I got wrong. I tried asking her and she referred me to the SI. I can't go because I work full time and am a full time student. Why can't she just do her job? Oh yea, she's privileged
Ineffective lecture style especially with online school. Her class design is very old and flawed and encourages students to fail. Avoid taking her and don't recommend her.
Caused my depression. Just don't take her. Her attitude is uptight and strict. She will laugh at you for asking a question.
Everyone I talk to has the same thing to say about Nesmith: don't take her. Even if she is your last option for Bio130, I strongly advise not taking her. I would wait another semester or take it with another college but trust me-- do not take this professor.
Ineffective teaching styles that produce low exam class averages. Hasn't adapted to online teaching or, more likely, does not want to. As a result, students struggle mightily. Simply a bad learning environment.
Professor Nesmith is not as bad as people makes her out to be; she is actually a nice and caring person. She provides the class with supplemental videos, which I found to be very informative. The one thing I dont like about her is how she formats her exams, she should completely remove the possibility of multiple answers existing for a quest
I found her teaching style to be really effective in terms of understanding some of the concepts that the book did not do a good job in explaining.
Professor Nesmith gets a bad rap for many reasons. She is inconsiderate, lazy, and inattentive when it comes to teaching her students. She pretends to care when in reality she simply cares about clocking out on time.
Awful at teaching the concepts that are going to be tested heavily with an impossible format of A-G choices. Expects you to be an instant biologist but does not take the time to teach you effectively. This overall classwork is much more than 3 of my other upperlevel classes combined. She's inconsiderate of her students' time and seems disinterested
Look, I understand that the premed track is not supposed to be easy and that some intro level courses are designed to weed out the students who don't truly want to go into a science field. However, the level of difficulty that Professor Nesmith chooses to incorporate makes her course border line impossible unless you devote 25 hours a week to study
Evaluating Professor Nesmith in just a couple hundred characters is impossible since there is no way one could express all that is needed. To keep it very, very brief: she is lazy, disinterested, unfair, condescending, unreasonable and unconcerned about the performance of her students. I had to begin therapy after this course bc of the toll it took
This professor is a cruel person to her core. She laughs and smiles when students complain about the difficulty. She is lucifer in flesh. I 100% believe she was a demonic witch in her past life--actually she probably still is.
I believe that I could write a book about my experience with bio 1500 but I am sure that nobody would take the time to glean on the contents of that book. So, what I am going to do is to summarize the main ideas here: Professor Nesmith is not a snake compared to other professors, she grades with her eyes open and because of that I no longer hate
Nesmith is not the hardest intro Bio professor I've ever had, but she's definitely ruthless. Lectures heavy, so take notes and review PowerPoints. Being an online class she changed her exams to be all multiple choice and you couldn't go back to see or change your answers which made exams unnecessarily difficult. She's a fine professor, just tough.
Horrible professor. Impossible tests, tough grader, bad lectures, list goes on. Does not care for her students. Class averages for exams/quizzes are usually around 50-60%. Patronizing and condescending tone when talking to students--especially minority students. Would never recommend.
I don't like to hyperbolize, but this professor has got to be the single worst professor/teacher/educator that I have had in my entire life. Her inattention to her students' concerns and questions leaves her students clueless and stressed resulting in 60% class averages on exams and quizzes. Please do not take this professor in any course. Please.
The single worst professor I have ever had. Please do not take as you will soon find out that you are paying money to become stressed and depressed without any guidance or help from the professor. You're essentially paying to fail the course and hurt your GPA. Take someone else or at another school. Nesmith is not the way I promise you, don't do it
Im not sure how she is head of the biology department. I took her and had trouble I went to SI and after not feeling like I still didnt understand the concept I went to her and the first thing she told me was well Im not gonna give you any answers I was there to understand a concept not get answers overall I felt like she didnt want to help.
she doesn't show you mercy if you have to unfortunately miss a class or test you will not get back the iClicker pts if u miss them and she makes the make-up exams on the day u missed them for 5 percent off and next day for 10 percent off but doesn't give u any more chances after one day has elapsed
I am an all-A student, this is the first time in my life I've ever gotten a B. THE CLASS AVERAGE GRADE WAS A 65%. She is honestly ver nice, but she is absolutely insane. She gives out four exams, almost one every 3-4 week. As soon as you study for one and take it, you need to start studying and preparing for the next ASAP. Her exam avg grade is 68%
This class was honestly tough and a lot of studying, had a hard time balancing it with other classes
Although I got a b I think she was reasonable tbh. She gave exams based on learning objectives( based on lecture) and lab so Id suggest reading the book and posted readings before class and then coming to lecture. Overall a thorough and passionate professor
Not as bad as people makes her out to be.
PLEASE DON'T EVER TAKE HER. This professor is by far the worse professor you'll ever take in your life. I have so much to say that I don't even know where to begin. First, let's start off with her exams, multiple-choice options are from A-G. She played with my mental health, I hated school because of this class. AGAIN, PLZ DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!
Yes, this is a content heavy course. However, courses such as BIO130 are meant to test your determination and discipline. We are in college now, not k-12. Professors are not always going to spoon feed you. Judy noticed that I was having personal issues and reached out in support. She genuinely cares about her students and has helped me greatly.
She's tough. She is preparing students for the challenge that is college, especially people going into the STEM/MED field. So I would not recommend this class to people that just need a DDC science credit. You have to come to class, you have to show effort, AND YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO DO THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES. Test is built off learning objectives
Professor Nesmith was the best professor I've had so far. Amazing lectures and fair grading. If I had the option to take another professor like Nesmith, I would. You need to understand the PowerPoints and learning objectives if you want to get a A. I almost didn't take her because of her reviews on here, but I'm so happy I did.
Do not take her. She doesn't care about her students and how she can help them. Her exams are impossible. Her compared to all my friends bio teachers is horrible. The other bio teachers are way better. Everyone warned me about her and she was my only option, so I was stuck. You will hate your life.
Her lectures were really good! Just make sure to pay attention in her lectures and understand the slides thoroughly! The SI sessions help in reviewing the concepts too! Very helpful and tried her best to answer my questions
DO NOT TAKE HER. If you walk around this school and ask anyone, they won't even have to take her they just knows she's horrible. Only thing in grade book is participation points and exams. Exams were HORRIFYING. Around 70 questions. 20 in writing, rest multiple choice. you would think multiple choice were easy let me just tell you.
She doesn't even explain the material, just goes over the slides. Her exams are impossible. If you ask her for help she will tell you to read the learning objectives. That's it. She was my only option for this semester so I had no choice but to take her.
I was kinda nervous taking this course after reading the reviews and considering it would be in the accelerated summer semester. I was nervous for nothing! Everything on the exams is from the lecture slides and can be further clarified in the textbook. She offers extra credit on every exam and overall, I really enjoyed her class!
Reviews make her look bad but she isn't at all. I took this course in the summer where it was accelerated. Grading criteria is clear and exams are very straight forward. Very nice and helpful, also offers extra credit on every exam.
By far one of the worst classes I have ever taken. this is most DEFINITELY a weeder course. The textbook is mandatory to buy to access the participation part of your grade, but we NEVER even used it. Practice problems were never provided answer keys, so you never know if your material is correct. Few tests and your grade will fully depend on them.
Prof. Nesmith is a great teacher if you are willing to put in any effort. She gives clear slides and allows room for questions and student interaction during lecture. Her test grading allows for partial credit on questions and is mostly multiple choice. She is very kind and knowledgeable about her subject. I would take her again in the future.
Nice lady. She does a good job of preparing her students for the exams. Although she does not lecture much, she gives a lot of in class assignments which help on the exam. She also posts the slides and the exams are basically directly off of them. She was also quick to reply to emails, even at night. Overall good professor.
She doesnt teach! She reads maybe 2 slides and forces attendance. never gives practice exam answers so you dont what she wants till you get the grade. bases your entire average on maybe 2 things.
Dr. NeSmith's class is a nightmare. Her chaotic lectures and massive, unclear assignments leave students confused and stressed. Grading is a mystery with no fair criteria. Avoid at all costs if you care about your sanity and GPA.
Avoid Dr. NeSmith's class! Disorganized lectures and relentless, vague assignments make learning impossible. Grading feels random and unjust. A total GPA destroyer! makes you buy the textbook for nothing
reads off of slides, iclickers are random so if you miss lecture for a personal reason you will get a 0. exams are difficult and make no sense at time
Very nice person. Tests rely heavily on slides and the iClickers do too. Answers questions quickly and nicely. Great for BIO 130.
I didn't mind her. She was helpful if you asked questions and, actually, I didn't mind her exams. Her LO's were pretty extensive, but at times a little jumbled. I wish she would've actually lectured MORE. The course has barely any homework so you really have to do well on the exams or the iclicker questions. Take her for lab, her labs were great!!
She doesn't like something and it rhymes with Lijabis. lol. so prejudice. She has bad reviews for a reason. Don't do it.
Professor Nesmith is a pretty solid BIO130 lecturer. The exams are mostly based on slides and iClicker questions, so staying on top of the material is key. unstuck study was a great study aid alongside the textbook. Overall, a manageable class with a helpful professor.
If you have the option to take a different professor, I recommend doing so. I love biology and have taken previous classes in the subject, where I did quite well. However, she is a tough grader and her exams are extremely difficult. To be honest, I'm appalled that she still teaches at this school. Please do yourself a favor and take someone else.
U must already know how to study and how ur brain retains information. She will help u by posting learning objectives and being available outside of class. this Is going to be an overwhelming class if u don't study and fall behind. She is very caring and offers extra credit. Class has 4 exams and offers lots of study material for exams. Love her
charges 100$ for a book I used once. 1/5 of a point and she wouldn't round it up even though I gave her evidence from one exam in which why she should round it up. she is a very rude person. for example, She made fun of me and my friend calling us "deaf" in a disrespectful way. ask any question she won't answer correct. do not take it with her.
Bought a 100 dollar book used prob 1 and if u don't do it, ruins ur grade bc whole class based off ur exam grade. U ask a question takes 10 days just to get to the answer. The exams consist of 40 multiple choice and 25 short answer that u only have an hour to do & then asks everyone did u run out of time like what do u think????
not bad, not great. a bit passive-aggressive at times. will explain things to u if u ask but doesn't always give a clear answer. makes u pay 90 for a book we NEVER touched except for like 2 short assignments. gives learning objectives that tell what exactly will be on the exams but is very picky about frq answers. 89% is an A- and 90% and up is A
makes u stay the whole 3 hrs and 45 min EVERY TIME. will purposely waste time so we have to stay the whole time. the directions for each lab were soooo long and confusing. theres a lab quiz every week on the previous lab which arent too bad if u study. she (usually) gives the correct answers for u to study and will tell u exactly what's on them.
Rather condescending and passive aggressive at time. not my fav professor
Don't let her rating fool you, Professor Nesmith is a sweet person who wants students to do well. There are many resources for students outside of class and in, and many opportunities for extra credit. The class is really easy if you just study the provided material. If students don't do well she adjusts her teaching style. There's group work too.
Took this course as my sequential class for CIS. If you plan to take bio, don't. Only offered in the summer. She is very nice and can easily be reached via email. This class is 100% outdoors so be prepared to walk a lot and take lots of notes. Exams are open note. WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN!! Can't stress this enough. Group project and a quiz a week.
I knew most of the material in this course from high school, so it wasn't too bad. However, if you didn't take bio or don't remember, her lectures are very long and can be confusing. You need to be present and on time or she will call you out, but the good thing is in-class assignments are really easy and mostly done for completion. Tests are hard.
shes nice but if ur late u will get called out. if u want to pass her exams make sure to use her practice problems, they'll most likely be on the exam. her tests r difficult if u just go in with memorization you need to understand what shes talking about in lecture to understand her questions other than her exams her class was easy
