Professory Newell is a great teacher, always ready to teach and makes the class fun. Still young enough to relate to us as students and smart enough to be able to relay the information in a straight forward easy to understand manner.

Mrs. Newell is awesome and so nice and easy to work with. Definately take classes from her!

The easiest class I'll probably take in college. I haven't done a single non-mandatory homework, nor have I taken a single note and I have a 98 currently.

I didnt open my book a single time all semester and finished with a 97. Doesnt collect homework and quizes are take home (and she drops the lowest 2). Average class time was about 25 minutes, because she covers the material in a very straight forward way and writes 10000 miles per hour. Great, easy class!

Ms. Newell is great! Notes are well-written, clear, and very helpful. Homework is not checked nor required; just weekly quizzes. Do and understand the test reviews and you're set to ace the class; tests are exactly like the review! Newell is helpful and very friendly! Keep up attendance, and she'll bump your final average!

Grandma Judy is one of the best profs you can ever have at SMU. Even if your only option to take her class is at 8am it is WORTH it! She is extremely helpful during office hours and I actually looked forward to going to math. She does look at the sign in sheet and compare signatures, but you usually get out 20 min early from class, so just GO :D

She is incredibly helpful with any questions you have. Take home quizzes generally once a week but if you're stumped go into her office hours and she will do it with you for a guaranteed A. Tests are exactly like her review sheet so know that and you're set for an A in the class. She adds points to your overall grade if you don't miss much class!

Newell is simply the best. She doesn't make things complicated, and isn't tricky with her questions. Also, her reviews are identical to the test. AND she's amazingly helpful in her office hours. I learned so much and made an A... really, she's a must-take.

BEST TEACHER EVER!

I had absolutely no background in calc and I was still able to do well. Take home quizzes are the only "hw" you need to do and you only need to study the reviews to prepare for the tests. She is friendly and approachable in helping with the take home quizzes or anything else. This 8 am is worth it, plus there is no such thing as a pop quiz.

Had her for precalculu. The only bad thing I can say about Mrs. Newell is that she teaches VERY FAST. Other than that, she's very friendly and approachable. :)

Grandma Judy Newell was just voted as one of the top 3 professors at SMU. Very true in every sense of the world. Attend every class, (she will drop 3 quiz grades, also will boost your final grade). She talks fast but is clear. Easily the best math professor at SMU.

Professor Newell is one of the best calc professors at SMU. There is never any kind of surprise on exams and all of the quizzes are take home. She tells you exactly what you need to know and the only difference between the review and the exam is that she changes the numbers. Having class at 8am twice a week is worth it.

Very sweet lady, and helpful. However, I did not like her "use" of class time. Mrs. Newell rushed through problems just so our 50-minute MWF lecture class could get out early. We were often let out of class after just 20 minutes! Math does not come easy for me and I would only recommend this class for those looking for a refresher course.

Best prof I've had at SMU, really loves what she teaches and understands that not everyone is a math genius or cares to be one. Tells great stories and brings her dog to class! I am an art student, and it was a great class to take in order to fulfill the credits of the university. Understands that not everyone is interested in math, but also understands that some is necessary to learn. Very clear, concise, and sweet. Class generally ends early. Take-home quizzes and tests are very easy, just like the review. Take her!

AMAZING professor! I have never been good at math in my life, and she made it enjoyable to go to class. Its extremely easy to get an A in this class and I would Highly suggest it, especially for Arts majors and Sports people. She understands scheduling and respects your art/sport.

She is great. The tests really do make or break your grade. You have a quiz grade (all take home quizzes, basically homework) but it is 10% of your grade so not necessarily enough to save it if you don't do well on tests. She is more than willing to help you and is always available.

Great Teacher for Business Math. Gives extra credit at end if you attend classes. Best bet for Math teacher.

She's a great lady and easy teacher, but if you actually want to learn math I would avoid. She teaches a systematic pattern to solving problems, not actual problem solving techniques. If you need to take a math class for you major, take her. If you want to learn math, look elsewhere. Don't buy the textbook. Tests count for most of the grade.

I took Mrs. Newell's Precalculus class after not having taken a math course in 2 years. Professor Newell can make anyone learn math! She's that good! Take-home weekly quizzes are your "homework" and thorough test reviews are always given before exams. Study your quizzes and reviews and you'll be set!

The first time I took pre-calc in high school I got a C, but with Professor Newell, I finished with an A. Her lectures do tend to be fast-paced but they're still easy to understand--and if not, she's always willing to help at office hours. If you have perfect attendance, she'll boost your lowest test grade. Her stories are also hilarious.

I love Mrs. Newell! She is so clear in lectures and knows everyone by name. If you ever have questions, she answers them as best as she can. I am a math major and I asked her about career opportunities and she sat and talked with me and gave me examples. She even recommended who to take for my upper level math!

My view may be slightly tainted because of my severe math aversion. Class moves really fast so I never really knew what was going on. Time moved really slowly. She obviously is a master in what she teaches. I just wish her office hours didn't conflict with my other classes. She is very helpful the time i could make it

If you have a chance to take professor Newell for Calculus, definitely take her. I had her for Business Precalculus and Business Calculus. She's very clear with her grading criteria, gives awesome notes and examples so you know what to expect, is super helpful during her office hours, and is an all around great person and teacher!

Easiest math class at SMU, and sweetest professor who wants everyone to get a good grade. 10 quizzes throughout the semester that are all done in groups, 4 tests that are only about 10 questions each and word for word the study guide. All homework answers are posted online. Final is open book/notes, but 94% and above are exempt from the final.

Professor Newell presents as a kindly Texan grandmother who just happens to be a math whiz. Expect 14 take-home quizzes (4 of which she drops), 4 exams, and 1 comprehensive final. Homework is available, but is not part of your grade. A few points will be added back to your lowest exam if you do well on the final and your attendance is above 90%.

I failed calc TWICE before taking her summer class, then made a B! She breaks down the material into easily digestible material and focuses on the actual math instead of abstract theories. If you have a 94% average at the end of the semester she does not make you take the final and a 94 is so easy to get if you just show up. Professor Newell is an amazing teacher and I would highly recommend taking her for any math. Mrs. Newell is the best math professor, so nice!! She will help outside of class during her office hours if you don't understand. There are take-home quizzes for each section, but you can ask for help. There are three tests and a final, all manageable if you study. Homework every class and even though it's not due for a grade, it helps to study.

This class is a very basic math class. She puts examples on the board for notes and she goes through the steps. You are expected to turn in the weekly (sometimes bi-weekly) quizzes which are not taken in class and done on your own time. The test are hard but if you study using the quizzes and practice tests you will do well.

Judy is amazing!! Her lectures are pretty good, although she goes pretty fast, but going to her office hours is a life-saver!! She truly cares about helping her students make an A, and is just the sweetest person in general!!

Very good choice for Business Calculus. Kind lady who runs a very straightforward class. Weekly quizzes and a very test heavy class. Reviews were very similar to tests. Attendance wasn't mandatory whatsoever, in a COVID year at least. Probably the best Business Calculus professor you can take.

Dr. Newell is a great math teacher. She explains concepts very clearly and goes over review questions before the tests that are identical in format to the actual test. If your test average is higher than a 95, you don't need to take the final, which so many students end up being able to do. Definitely recommend her for Business Calculus

Professor Newell is one of the kindest teachers I have ever had. Failed the first test but managed to get As and Bs on the next three. Tests make up 60% of your grade, with 12 Homework assignments worth 10% and the final worth 30%. Go to office hours and this class will become a lot easier.

Professor Newell is one of the best Math teachers! She is very good at explaining the content. Even though she teaches fast, you can return to her recorded videos. Also, her office hours are very helpful. I would highly recommend taking her class.

Super straightforward class. If you don't show up, you won't pass because every test review/quiz is gone over in entirety in class. She's great!

Mrs. Judy is AMAZING! As long as you do the test reviews and see her during office hours, you will do perfectly fine on the unit tests/final exam. You just have to put in the work! The textbook she suggests is only for practice problems, which are not required. If you want the extra practice to review, just ask her for old tests or quizzes.

Dr. Newell is the BEST. You can test out of the final with a 94 test average. She is so sweet and helpful. Homework is optional. Quizzes are take home. I think Spring 2022 is her last semester. Take her if you get the chance.

Professor Newell was the best Calc professor I ever had. The take home quizzes are useful for studying for the tests, and the tests themselves are also similar to the study guide. Her lectures are clear to follow as well.

I love professor Newell! She is funny without trying and genuinely cares about her students. Professor Newell is very easy to understand and her course setup is very simple. If you struggle with math, I would highly recommend her. Her notes are mostly practice problems, so make sure you write down the things she says alongside what she writes.

Her test reviews were exactly like her tests. She gave harder questions on the take-home quizzes. She is just quite generous with her grading and help in general.

Solid professor, made me enjoy the course content even if I'm not a big Maths person.
