Not a good professor at all. Doesnt explain anything, you're treated as thought you're retarded.

This woman was the worst teacher, had the hardest tests, and expected everyone to have a PhD understanding of what she was teaching. Paraphrase this "you should have never become a teacher!"

THIS WOMAN SHOULD NOT BE TEACHING!! She has a geart knowledge of what she teaches, the problem is that she doesn't know how to convey this to her students. Also, she practically forces you to her see her (grading), and everything that she'll tell you is right in her "mandatory" office visit, she will then mark incorrect later on. I could say more

She is never able to answer your questions, is constantly talking in circles, making seemingly simple concepts way more complex than they have to be, and is incredibly liberal. Worthless class, take PSY 100 instead.

This was the worst class I have taken. She talks down to us as if we're idiots and have no idea what is going on. She is never willing to help you out with anything. Her tests don't clearly represent the material at all, therefore forcing students to usually fail all of them. Please stay away from this class she's crazy and it sux.

worst class ive ever taken in college, mind you i took it the summer before the fall semester of my freshman year. completely ruined my summer because all i could think about was her stupid readings and quizzes... STAY AWAY from her class

IF YOU CAN TAKE A SOCIOLOGY CLASS WITH ANOTHER PROFESSOR, THEN TAKE IT WITH ANOTHER PROFESSOR. By far the WORST professor i have ever had. finds ANY excuse to mark a question wrong on an exam. Has open note exams so you would think it would be a piece of cake but it is not. if u want to save your GPA stay away from this professor.Ruined mine.

WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. I have taken classes of this nature before and was very interested in the topic until this woman. She is self righteous and useless. She claims that the issue is the student, but if every student has a problem with her, I think the blame lies somewhere else. She is just plain awful.

I came to class, took notes, did the reading and went to office hours. She claims this is what needs to be done to get a good grade. That is false. She has an attitude of superiority and gets off of failing people. Not only a terrible teacher, but a terrible person. I am typically a B+ student, she ruined my GPA.

Her teaching methods are flawed and not unstanding. The open notebook quizzes are really the worst thing ever. You basically have to re-write your text and hope that what you think is important to be on the quiz, she does as well. It becomes a guessing game. She does not care about the students; or at least it doesn't seem so. She's a joke.

This professor was awful. The only reason why some people passed her class was because she made attendance 70% of the final grade. She tried to blame the lack of her skills to teach the class on our unwillingness to come to class to learn. I would advise to stay away from this teacher if you do not want to hurt your gpa.

WAY TOO HARD FOR A 200 LEVEL CLASS. Class time was wasted with pointless discussions. if you want to save your gpa don't have her as a professor.

She really is awful, I'm a CJ major, awful/hate math and i look forward to my econ class more than hers. Her lectures are a joke, does an awful lot of talking but not much explaining. Expects ridiculously specific answers on pop quizzes. Really seems like she doesn't want student to do well. The class material is very interesting but she ruins it

The worst professor I have had at URI. Quizzes are impossible especially with the amount of time you get. In class is a joke, only reason I went was for attendance which counts for 20% of your grade. Avoid taking this class! URI should definitely get another professor to teach it.

HORRIBLE!! I put more effort into this gen. ed. class than all of my other classes and this was my lowest grade of the semester. Her online quizzes are TERRIBLE. Learn things her way or else you are wrong. Good teachers change their teaching styles to adhere to students needs- no, in this class you need to change your learning style to survive.

One of the worst professors I've ever had. Does not even know how to teach which is why she relies so heavily on the book. Attendance is mandatory but lectures consist of her standing there, talking aimlessly and waiting for us to ask questions. Do not take this class if you don't need to. URI needs a new professor for this course.

The most useless professor at URI period!

This teacher does not teach. She has found a loophole in the education system that allows her to make the money she does to teach as a tenured professor, without actually teaching. She forces students to learn the material on their own and teach the rest of the class through papers and presentations. I am a straight A student.

Definitely the worst professor I've ever had. I went to every class, kept up with the readings, participated in weekly discussions,and studied for the exams and still got a bad grade. She doesn't actually teach. She assigns readings then has you take a quiz on it to prove you've read it. She's a nice woman but awful teacher. Avoid her at all costs.

If you want to take criminal justice courses to learn new things about the system itself and learn the curriculum this course provides, then don't take SOC 370 with Van Wyk because you won't learn anything. All you'll hear is her presenting a point of view as if it was fact!! Therefore, if you take 370 AVOID VAN WYK AT ALL COSTS! SHE IS THE WORST!

Her teaching style is giving students papers to present to the class. Books, tests and assignments are almost impossible to pass. Extremely opinionated. Changed the style of her exams each time. Impossible to talk to her unless you agree with everything she says, which, most of the time, you wont. Do not take her unless you desperately have to.

The worst professor I have ever had. My flight home was cancelled due to weather so I missed the midterm and she would not let me take it any other time. "It's on me". Words can't describe how terrible she is. Avoid at any cost!

Your homework assignments every class are basically 2-3 page essays. The instructions are longer than the syllabus. Hard grader and barely teaches. Talks more about her own life.

I would literally pay her out of my packet to teach me the material instead of just sitting in her 8am listing to her talk about her personal life and watch her get annoyed over none of us understanding the material, even though she gives you a ridiculously difficult assignment before she even attempts to explain anything the material covered in it

Hardest class ever taken. You have to work for the grade you are given which seems almost impossible. Class was based on 4 grades, 2 random HW assignments collected, which seems unfair because some are obviously easier than other (50%) and a midterm and final which are not bearable at all. Its simple: do not take any classes from this professor

Expect to have feedback that tears you apart. She will make you feel uneducated. This class makes me not want to learn. She spends the entire class lecturing about unrelated topics, then expects you to finish her online tests in less than an hour? Think again before taking her class.

Aside from being the most inconsiderate person I have ever met, this professor is condescending, rude, and her assignments MAKE NO SENSE. All of the homework questions are pulled from the most random crevices of the book and are on the smallest details that don't help you have any bearing on the material. Aside from this, she doesnt even teach.

Sadly this is a really interesting course that just happens to be taught by the wicked witch of the west. Be prepared to regurgitate information and form to original thought on your papers and assignments. If you have the option to take the class with another professor do so, but i think she is the only professor.

She wasn't the worst lecturer ever when she was on topic, I actually enjoyed it. But she's so unprofessional, half the time she is either whining about tech support aggravating her or being rude to a student who only asked a question. Big thumbs down from me, I learned more about how hard it was to set up her wifi than I did about Sociology.

This professor doesn't really care about her students, is rude, and grades pretty harshly. For a 100 level course, it took up too much of my time when I should have been spending more effort on more important classes. Do not take soc 100 with this teacher

Awful professor. So rude, inconsiderate, and uppity. She expects you to regurgitate the things she says, uses her own research and expects you to find random articles and tidbits of knowledge. Steer clear of this professor.

She has no teaching ability whatsoever, but then will stand in front of the class and talk down to you all about how you "still aren't getting it." Guess what? We "still aren't getting it" because you are a poor professor and aren't cut out for this career path. Unbelievably rude and condescending. Absolutely do not take any of her classes.

I have had her for 2 lectures and I feel suffocated by her. She tries to be nice ,but with everything else it doesn't help. Wish I could actually feel excited but I just dread the class. Hate to hate right now. The reading seems long andwinded. Apa book is confusing as hell but is required.

this professor is so disrespectful, even after being met with the utmost kindness and sincerity. She lectures about how we should be graded on our overall LEARNING AND UNDERSTANDING of the topic of sociology, but greatly penalizes our grades because of aspects not related. Class taught themselves from the textbook. Rarely notes taken. 50 question quiz from each chapter that counted and was not easy. Papers counted as 13 percent of one's grade and if you site something wrong you receive a zero. For the exams, she doesn't really go over what you need to know. Midterm was based off ten chapters, no guide, all fill in.

Seems to be more strict regarding APA usage when she should be focusing on developing better lesson plans. If you take this class with her, you will be learning everything on your own and attending class to pick up 2-3 key bits of information that she may or may not put on one of her ridiculous tests. If you value your GPA then avoid this prof.

Taking this class was my biggest regret of the semester. I tried giving her the benefit of the doubt, despite reading terrible reviews on her/the class, but she lived up to her reputation. She is the toughest grader ever and we only have 5 quizzes the entire semester. Attendance counts and she will mark you absent if you look at your phone.

Hard pass, take something else if you can.

whatever you do, do not take this course. this is supposed to be a 100 level course, but quite frankly it was anything but an entry level course for freshman and sophomores. the only grades you have are 5 quizzes and they are only a few impossible questions so if you get a few wrong, youre screwed. one of the hardest and most stressful courses

This was the worst class I have ever taken in my life. Our grade for the entire course was based off of five quizzes, the final exam, and attendance. I emailed this professor explaining how I needed to do good in this class and how I had been doing everything I possibly could to study for the quizzes but could not pass one. She was extremely rude.

This professor is absolutely the worst! She extremely rude to her students! She has a horibble method of teaching. She only grades you off of attendance which she is very strict about (including using the bathroom) and the five quizzes throughout the semester. Her quizzes are extremely hard! I asked and very few passed her quizzes!!

Wanted to do good in her class but she is a ridiculously tough grader and her quizzes are based off nothing she goes over in her lectures, which are very boring and non interactive. She goes by the slides so fast the I couldn't even write down half of a slide and we aren't allowed to take pictures of them and she won't send them to you DO NOT TAKE!

She is very condescending to her students if they don't know the answer to a question or get an answer wrong. She is a very strict grader, she will deduct points if it's not up to her standard of teaching. She is very rude and quite frankly entitled, she's stated how she can't get fired and how she can do whatever she wants. dont take her class

She basically told students if they're not dying they do not have a legitimate excuse as to why they can't do work or be in class. All while being in a global pandemic. Which basically sums her up as a human being. Very nasty spirited professor. Please dont take her classes.

This professor most certainly did not meet my expectations. She does not answer questions in a timely manner and gets off topic often. She does not have any clear instruction on assignments and feedback she gives is condescending. If you are struggling in the class don't even try to ask her for clarification unless you enjoy feeling less than.

She is the least compassionate and understanding professor I have had throughout my education. She ignores student questions at best and ridicules them to the point of humiliation at worst. She had implied that her students are soft and dramatic and the pandemic only affects those who die, no one else and there are no excuses for even a question.

For all the years I've been in school, I have never met a more condescending and less helpful teacher/professor. She makes you feel stupid for asking questions, she did not teach a single thing in this class, gave us piles of reading and then graded us on the structure of our papers rather than the content. I advise you not to take her classes.

This professor does not care about her students at all. Reached out for help and did not receive it. HORRIBLE when it comes to grading and does nothing follow or have a clear rubric. Half of my class failed and she told us we would never make it through college and we should pay more attention to our studies even though we did as she asked

I really found the material of this class so interesting and recommend, but not the professor. Get ready to take textbook notes word for word if you want to pass. Cumulative final exam with no prior exams, three huge papers, no group projects, no extra credit, no dropped quizzes, absolutely no exceptions. Enough said.

I fall asleep every class. she expects you to memorize every single definition and any type of information from lectures and textbook chapters. she does quizzes every class and uses random questions from the textbook that no one knows. its too later for me to drop. please, SAVE YOURSELF THE TORTUREEEEEE

She's the most condescending person I have ever met. I took her SOC 100 class and expected to read every chapter or you won't do well in this class. Do not take a class with her. She will do everything in her power to fail students. She does not care about her students whatsoever. She will make students feel awful about themselves. I spent hours upon hours for this class studying and doing everything she said and she essentially told me there was no hope for my future. Never take this class.

She is a very tough grader and especially with a 100 level class is incredibly tough. She has a very difficult way to follow style of teaching and it is hard to grasp the information. The whole class is reading based and she gives a quiz every class.

Literally does not teach students, has genuinely absurd expectations regarding papers and the reading quizzes are impossible to do well on unless you memorize every single word of about 25-30 pages of textbook reading. And when we get our quizzes back, she won't explain the correction to wrong answers. She is quite literally heinous

This was the worst class I have ever taken. She is not easy to work with, very rude, and a very strict grader. We only have class once a week but if you miss class you will fail. There is a pop quiz every week and they usually dont relate to what you are learning that week.

Probably the worst professor I have ever had. The quiz questions were so hard, you would need to define a word that was mentioned once. If you missed literally one class you would get a 0. Mine was excused by the school, and still gave me a 0. She started with like 50 kids and ended with less than 15.

Professor Van Wyk was the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. There was 45 pages a week of huge, detailed scientific journals and quizzes every week with less than five questions on it. Wasn't helpful at all in office hours basically saying if you read it, you'll pass which is not true at all. I avoid her classes at all cost.

She just is very old school. No electronics allowed because she is paranoid of all these online chat GPT sites.

She is just not good at explaining thing in ways younger Audiences can understand. The TA basically runs her class for her because nobody understand anything she ever says. She hands out quizzes every class, and she will bug out on you for any kind of electronic being brought into her classroom. Watches included. Horrible grader as well

This is a 100 level course and she grades as if it is a grad class. Half of my class dropped out in the first week. There are no computers or cell phones allwoed in the class, every class there is a worksheet to do independtly and sometimes with no notes. The content is VERY vocab heavy and she expects you to know what every little thing means.

Never again. Graded paper every class. She would always refer us to the textbook but since it's online, we could never use it in class since she doesn't believe in electronics. Tough grader. I dropped after two classes. If you had a question she would just smile and say refer back to notes and textbook. Handouts made no sense.

The teacher does not provide feedback on her quizzes, once I went to her help hours to ask why she failed me on a quiz which seemed quite easy. She responded with the fact I added too much to my response even though she said it was correct. I liked learning about Sociology, though it seems like she is testing her students with her outrageous class.

Harshest grading teacher I have ever had(graded assignments in every class). She will grade for "perfection" and then not provide feedback. Attendance is crucial, I had lice and I still got marked unexcused. I studied in this class the most compared to others, submitted everything possible, completed all readings, took notes AND I STILL GOT A D+

Was excited to take a social movement class but her lectures were irrelevant to reading assignments & quizzes. She makes it her mission to see students struggle & her grading is like nothing I've seen before.10 pages papers are nothing to me at this point and she gave me an F on the first one and gave awful feedback. spare yourself and don't take!

This was my last semester at uri. I was the most excited for this class and it turned out to be the most dreaded. She seems to get off on making her students feel stupid. The worst professor I ever had. She's unapproachable and will give you a zero with a smile on her face with zero explanation.

This women acts like a middle school teacher. Her grading brought down my GPA. I got an A in stats and couldn't even get a B in this class. Her in class assignments are way too specific and half the classes she talks about her life not the content. Listen to me when I tell you to not take this class. This class is for those who wish to suffer. Run

Don't take SOC with her unless you want to fail. We had to take assessments every class that was 60% of our grade and i got one question wrong and would get 50 or 60s. If you don't answer in her way ur getting a zero and doesn't even teach, the whole time she talks about nonsense and doesn't help you even if you go to her office hours.

I was warned by multiple students to not take her class but I ignored them(100 level class should be easy)Very little compassion, she's a tough grader, attendance is mandatory, no extra credit, she rambles off about personal stories during lectures & the list goes on.
