Very difficult 100 level course. Be prepared to spend many hours slaving over homework. She is nice enough though and willing to help.
hard class only good thing is that the class is curved so that an 85 is an A
Hard Class! She teaches straight from the text book and her slides are exact examples from the book. Also teaches about 2-3 chapters ahead of the test the whole semester, making it difficult to really learn the material when she teaches it. Also very confusing conceptual questions on test.
Oh, Judy Wu :) She's a really cute lady. Honestly, for a Physics course, I thought it was pretty easy. She practically reads the book in lecture, so definitely study the book if you have trouble with her accent, which in my opinion wasn't that bad. Overall, decent physics experience, which is more than I was hoping for!
Dr. Wu is an excellent professor for students new to the world of physics. You can do well on her tests if you know the major concepts (I suggest reading the textbook for more better clarity). Although, HW was quite difficult. But, the lab and quiz grades should help your overall grade in the class. Additionally, 85% and above is an A for her class
Dr. Wu is such a sweetheart! If you're scared to take physics, take it with Dr. Wu! She is so helpful and answers her email all the time! She understands students & their troubles and tries to accommodates for them as best as she can! HW is hard but rely on the textbook for better understanding! Love Dr. Wu and you will too!
She is a very good teacher. She really cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed so she is very accomodating. If you ask she will provide extra credit on the homework and tests. The homework is hard but you can usually find similar problems on yahoo answers. If you can do the homework you will do well on the tests. She is great.
Judy Wu is so sweet! She truly enjoys the topic of physics and is there to help you understand as well! She has multiple exams, but they are 10 questions each, multiple choice. They are challenging, but not terrible!
Judy was an awesome professor. What she expected of you was clear from the start of the semester so you could work towards it. She listened to opinions of all students and was there to help outside of class. The homework is decently challenging and there will be worksheets at the end of every class. Just put in the work and you will do just fine.
I love Judy!!! Shes so cute and sweet and really cares about her students. The class tests are hard af but make sure you look at her lecture slides and webassign hw and youll do fine. Im gonna miss Judy!!!
Judy is funny and goes through her lectures with lots of detail and explanation. Sometimes lectures run a bit over schedule. Tests are pretty easy and she gives equation sheets. There are in class assignments every day, but TAs and Judy are available to help. Judy responds to emails very quickly. Only problem is webassigns are long. Judy is a saint
I loved Dr. Wu so much! Unlike most physics professors, she puts in the effort to make the content accessible and her expectations are reasonable and clear. Come to class for the worksheets, invest some time on WebAssign, and use her prep materials for the exams and you shouldn't struggle with this course at all!
Class was super easy and she made it that way. Nothing bad to say about Prof. Wu.
I loved Judy Wu. She is such a fun (and funny) professor. Very understanding. There are in-class worksheets almost every class which are usually not hard. The tests are 10 multiple choice questions and very fair. I received more extra credit in this course than in all of the courses I have taken combined. It was an easy A and I'm a student athlete.
Due to the in class worksheets at every lecture, attendance to lectures is mandatory, but that's not a bad thing because Judy Wu is a very capable teacher. Her class was fairly easy but I felt like I learned a lot from her lectures. I would definitely recommend her for someone looking to take Physics or Physics 1 to be more specific.
Very generous grading scale--85% was an A. However, there were daily worksheets in class (for credit!) and 5 midterms worth 48% of the grade (dropped the lowest) and a final exam that was 22% of the grade. Exams were 10 multiple choice question, but they were all question from worksheets and practice exams. Study those, and an A is easy.
Very passionate about PHSX. She is very good lecture and have patient for student who slow or ask questions. TAKE HER AS YOU CAN
Be prepared to learn physics on your own outside of class. I left class everyday feeling like I hadnt learned anything and frustrated with my grade. She ran through her slides so fast and it was impossible to keep up. I failed almost every test even though I spent hours studying and even had a tutor. Would not recommend this class.
I took this course this spring and it is VERY difficult if you do not have a background in physics. I spent many nights trying to teach myself concepts before the test, and I feel like I did not retain any knowledge from this course. If you are required to take this course for your major make sure to ask from help from peers and study in groups!!!
I'm going to be real. PHSX 1 and 2 will be easy because of her. I will say you need to be good at algebra and know how to plug and chug numbers into equations. Her test average is typically 85-93%. 87% for an A. People think it's hard because they're not good at basic algebra or they're lazy. The class is stupid easy if you try. GET THIS TEACHER
Judy Wu will make physics in college not so bad for you. The other ratings speak for themselves it feels easier because she is teaching it. There is heap of extra credit available on worksheets and bonus questions on every test, and the answers to the homework are generally online, so that helped, too. She will make this class bearable for you.
I'm not sure how her class is while in person, but online the lectures do not teach you anything, she goes super fast and even though she's just explaining the slides and not even teaching or explaining problems, it is still hard to keep up. Seems like a nice person and is generous with extra credit during each class, it's hard to succeed on exams.
Dr. Wu is nice, but her lectures are difficult to pay attention to. Presenting problems over slides rather than writing them out is difficult being a visual learner. In-class quizzes are after every lecture, she is generous with extra credit. Tests are difficult, but manageable if you prepare. I'm taking PHSX 115 with her in the fall, not by choice
Judy Wu gives out so much extra credit it's crazy. You do a daily quiz worth 4 points, then a bonus problem for 2 extra points. The exams are a little tricky, but if you review her old exams and quizzes the problems are so similar if not exact. She uses +/, but a 90 is an A and an 85 is an A-. Her lectures are horrible, but if you read the textbook
I had Professor Wu for PHSX 114 and 115. Received an A and A- respectively. I was nervous going into Physics but Judy made it bearable. Quizzes every class, but it's graded on effort more than accuracy. Online homework is easy. Exams are 10 questions, 10 points each and a big part of your overall grade. But Judy is fair and offers extra credit!
Dr. Wu is a great professor and does everything she can to help her students succeed. She gives daily quizzes, but they are open note and you get half points just by answering the question. The online readings/homework could be frustrating and weren't very helpful, but as long as you consistently go to class and do the practice tests, you're good
Take this class from her if you want a easy grade, not if you're trying to understand physics.
The class was fine. I don't think I learned anything, but I was still able to get an A. She gives out participation points for coming to class with occasional extra credit. The class is fairly test heavy, but you do get a test drop. She gives a sheet with all the equations you need for exams, so you just need to understand how to plug stuff in.
Dr. Wu is a very nice person, but this does not mean she is a great professor. She goes through lectures super fast with little practice problems and the class has 10 minutes to do a daily quiz with classmates. There is extra credit, but the exams have an average of 60-70% which she considers good-not a good score for a general 100-level class.
I suggest that you come to class as the exams are based on the questions and quizzes done in class. There is no homework or outside class assignments. She is really great at explaining the physics lecture material.
Judy is a nice person, but she is not a good instructor. She always preaches how every test question can be found throughout the lessons, but the test questions are always completely different. Her 6 tests are multiple choice so she gives zero partial credit which can bring down your grade fast. Definitely take the other physics class if possible.
Judy Wu was by far the worst professor I have ever had. She makes thing way more complicated than they are and she thinks we are all on the same intellectual level as her. She is terrible at explaining things everyone in my class was either talking or on their phones because she was so monotone and nobody understands what is going on in class.
Judy is good at getting right to the point, however she struggles with articulating what's important to know versus what is negligible. I mainly struggled because there was so much to study for most exams, and it ended up making my grade suffer because I would study the wrong thing. In class quiz each lecture, with opportunity for extra credit.
Ignore old reviews saying she drops a test and doesn't give homework, she stopped doing that. She rushes through lectures and covers way more than what's on the test so you do not know what to study, and the homework is from a third party so it doesn't relate to what you learn. She's nice, but you don't learn anything and your grades will show it.
Judy is the best option for this class, but she is pretty meh. If you have no prior experience with PHSX, you will struggle. The lectures make absolutely no sense at all. Going to TA hours and scheduling a tutor will help tremendously. Ignore most prior ratings for Judy, she's not good or bad.
Judy Wu is not a bad person, and she cares for the class. Nevertheless, the whole content and the execution of the class doesn't make sense. Most of the class consists of her reading slides that have an awful arrangement and are not self-explanatory. Tests were mostly easy, but the final exam was hard.
you can tell how much she enjoys teaching and wants us to be engaged, the tests were pretty easy except for the final. there is a quiz every class which she uses as a substitute for attendance, and some questions include extra credit which helps your grade a lot.
Judy is a decent prof. Lecture slides can be confusing and unorganized. The worst part is not Judy, but the class layout. The exams are 10 multiple choice questions. That's it. If you miss one question you're at a 90. I don't know what moron thought this was a good idea, but that's how 114 and 115 are. You're better off taking PHSX at a CC.
Dr. Wu clearly cares about her students and really tries to keep us engaged, but the grading structure is terrible. Attendance is mandatory; no assignments or exams are dropped. The main exams are like the practice exams, and the homework is useless (harder than exam). The final is WAY harder than the other exams. Find a good YouTuber for studying.
She took away all the extra credit. Attendance is mandatory, no dropped homework, no dropped attendance, no dropped exams, no dropped quizzes, and final exam is mandatory. The final is also not easy. 92 to get an A but its extremely hard and stressful because you can no mess up anything. The TAs are helpful but thats it.
Dr. Wu is a very nice person, but the class is structured very poorly. There are no bonus points, no dropped attendance points, no dropped tests or final, and no dropped homework assignments. The slides are confusing and the lectures are hard to understand. She gives a formula sheet but it is confusing and does not include some formulas.
Do not take this class with her. Although, there isn't a good option, you are better off taking this class at a Community College. She is rude, and she is not understanding of situations. Tests are worth 70% of the grade, and there is no room for error. Her lectures don't even make sense, so you have to teach yourself a lot of the course.
The exams are set up in a very unfair way and the questions are very hard. The homework is not representative of the material learned in class. She offers no dropped exams and not curve enough half her students failed one exam this semester. She is kind, but maybe a little more leniency would be nice. I would not recommend though.
Class structure is horrible, tests are weighted too much and there is no room for mistakes.Tests are multiple choice, with 13 questions each worth 8 points. No partial credit on the questions so you either get all 8 points or none. You have to attend lectures, and there is no extra credit like before. Better off at a community college
went to this class without my seat belt on hoping i got into a car accident
Tests and final are worth almost 70% of the grade, there are no drops, and they are multiple choice with no partial credit. Dr. Wu has mentioned that she aims to make the class average 60-70% for each exam, which is fully not passing. She used to give extra credit, but did not this year, and she won't fix iClicker issues, which drops your grade.
I too drove to this class without my seatbelt hoping I'd get into an accident, topped it off by holding down the gas pedal down with a brick
Can hardly understand what she says due to her strong accent during the lecture. The homework is hardly ever the same as what we learn in class. (chatgtped most of it) You will need clicker points. Some are for extra credit. The exams are lowkey hard if you don't study for it and even then some of the conceptual aspects of it will get you.
Professor is terrible, almost impossible to understand, on top of information being on tests that we never went over in class. During the final exam, she made changes to certain questions and then came back around to change those changes again. She would also never include what we actually needed. Worst class i've taken at KU
Judy Wu is a very nice person, but she does not know how to run/structure a college class. First, her class is extremely exam heavy; ~70% of your grade is from 4 mid terms and a final. Second, the homework is from a third party source, and it loosely relates to what we covered in class. She does give a good amount of extra credit which is nice.
The way this class is structured is heinous. Four midterms and a final. Each midterm is 12% of your grade and is 13 questions long. If you mess up one exam, your grade is cooked. There is absolutely no room for error in this class. I have never stressed more about a 100 level class in my life. I took a 600 level bio class that was easier than 115.
I honestly cannot believe I made it through 2 semesters with this professor. The reviews of this class do not do it justice. This class was the most unorganized, poorly run disaster I have ever encountered. She does not proof read her exams and often has to correct then mid-testing. Judy is TERRIBLE professor. She's tenured so do not expect change.
This class is an absolute joke. It is only difficult because of how poorly run it is. Lectures are incoherent and useless. Literally every single exam has had a major typo that she had to correct MIDEXAM. Its truly unbelievable how Judy Wu has taught this class for so long and still has zero clue what she is doing. Hardest 100 level class ever.
I have never seen worse slides than the ones for these classes. One slide will include 5 different text colors, sizes, and fonts. They're so disorganized that trying to understand what is on them seems impossible. The homework doesn't correspond to the lecture/iclicker content, so its a waste of time but still required. The lab is BAD BAD, too.
I went to Dr. Wu multiple times in attempts to express concern and find guidance, she waisted my time. She is nice but should not be a professor. Exams were inconsistent with practice exams. Knowing people that had previously taken the class saved me. She altered her class to make it more difficult, less extra credit and no more dropped exam.
Worst class ever. Lectures were incoherent, messy and unintelligible. Homework was rarely related to exams and VERY difficult. Exams determine your grade. Difficult, no room for error, terrible professor. Worst professor I've met, barely knows what's happening in her own class, mostly brags about her research. Read every other review here.
One of the worst classes I have taken here. No room for error, she thinks 60-70% is ideal for a class average, knowing that most of her class is pre-health of some sort. Test worth almost 80%, if you miss one question, you are down 8%. Don't expect her to curve. Made errors on every single test, and makes adjustments in the middle of the test
One of the worst classes I have taken here. The class is structured poorly, and the tests are difficult and she often changes questions during the middle of the exam. Take it at a community college if you can because the physics department here is not good.
Add this professor for physics 1 and 2, they were probably the worst taught classes. She used to give extra credit every class, but she randomly changed. Tests are worth almost 80%, and if you miss a question, you drop 8 points on the test. Best way to study is reading through her slides, IClicker questions, and practice exams. Homework is useless.
Good luck, worst class I have ever taken. Need to lock in from the beginning even though her lectures are super boring. Be prepared for the tests to be changed halfway while you are taking it. One of those professors that are only here for their research.
She makes more of an effort to explain concepts than Besson and the homework tool will at least tell you if you got something wrong, but the tool will not tell you *why* and it's super finicky. The online textbook is kind of helpful but doesn't go into much detail and some of the HW problems are wayyy more complex than the book.
Honestly entire physics department is terrible. Numerous people have the flu and are required to take the test even with an excuse able doctors note. Even if you have a doctors note you're required to take the exam otherwise you'll most likely fail. Lectures are so messy and confusing. Don't even get me started on the iclicker
terrible. absolutely terrible. doesn't do any actual teachings and just rambles on during the 1.15hour lecture. while giving confusion information. goes about solving problems the most info heavy way possible to confuse students then has slides that are so horribly done it makes you disoriented just by looking at all the different colors and font.
Without a doubt, this is the worst teacher I have ever had. She is hard to understand and has a terrible structure in the class. If I were you, I would not even take Physics at KU. While in the military, I witnessed 19-year-old kids with no college experience do a better job than whoever runs the Physics program at KU. They should all be fired!!!!!
This class is absolutely miserable. The lab is so hard and TA's suck. She doesn't speak clearly and the lectures are pointless to try and learn. She takes attendance for points, but only if you get the questions correct. 4 midterms that are only 13 questions with NO partial credit. Assignments are all online and not even ai helps. Final worth 20%.
Judy Wu is an abysmally poor physics professor. Her lecture slides are just word vomits of equations with no spaces or clear distinction between equations. She is incredibly hard to understand during lecture. Her answer keys for practice exams are the same way. Example, =24.7rad/s-0.902rad/s2x25.0s- an exact copy, no spaces/commas. Just word dump.
actually horrible, dont take it with her if you have the choice
This is by far the worst course I have ever taken. No partial credit on exams so you could literally get a 0%. The tests are nothing like the practice exams and Ta's and tutors are not helpful. Judy does not respond to emails and if you do poorly on one exam your grade is ruined. I would take at a community college if you want to keep your sanity.
There's no way to contact her directly, they just give you an email that the TA's have access to. She often cancels her office hours. The practice problems for the test don't prepare you for the concepts or types of problems you will have on the exams. She doesn't explain concepts very well, so you have to learn on your own outside of class.
Get ready to teach yourself everything. No exaggeration, she is the worst professor I have ever seen. Her lecture slides are incoherent. 80% of your grade comes from exams. Homework does not reflect exams at all.
Please don't take Physics 114 at KU, especially with this professor. I am about to graduate, and this has been the worst class I have taken by far. Lectures are confusing. Grade didn't reflect effort until I started learning from YouTube professors. Tests are heavily weighted. No corrections, partial credit, or late work on anything.
the absolute worst class i've taken at ku avoid taking phsx with her at all costs
Is she the best professor? Not necessarily, but she's definitely not the worst. I've taken her and Besson, and I definitely recommend Wu. If you don't go to class, your grade will 100% tank. I do wish she would take the geo-location off of iClicker, but it is what it is. KU Physics sucks, but I will take Judy over again in a heartbeat.
This class has been challenging in finding academic support. I reached out to many people and was given different answers each time.
This is the WORST class I have taken at KU so far. Each time I would show up to class, I would leave feeling confused with little guidance. Also, the exams never line up with any study guide or old exam she gives us. She gives no partial credit on exams, so if you miss more than three problems, your overall test grade is practically screwed..
DO NOT TAKE THIS AT KU! This is the worst class I've ever taken. The reviews are nothing like the miserable tests, which are worth most of your grade. Homework is worth basically nothing. The lab is awful. Judy is so unhelpful. You must pay $70 just to access your homework online. This class made me want to jump off of a bridge.
Judy is by far one of the worst professors I have ever had. Do not ever take physics at KU. Each day I went to her class I wanted to ram myself into a bus after. I learned absolutely nothing and the TA's are absolutely rude and not helpful at all. Worst class ever
Worst class ever! Lectures were confusing, Judy was rude, and is really only here for her research. Her rating here dropped from 4.7 last year, so that speaks a lot about her switch up. Only read the more recent reviews and know that you have to do so well on the tests to do well in the class. Her slides are confusing and so is she. Good luck yall!
Before taking this class you should know that it's VERY lecture heavy. We'd cover 1-2 units in one lecture and there are in class quizzes that you have to be present for. Some are bonuses so make sure you show up to class. She doesn't ever respond to emails. Going to tutoring (that's what SAVED me) and got me a C-. Good luck, trust, you'll need it.
Dr. Wu is knowledgeable of the content she covers and is well spoken during her lectures. She uses iClicker quizzes as a way to track attendence and they are worth a fair number of points; this is not a class you should skip. It can be very easy to fall behind, but hard work and utilizing the very generous practice exams allowed me to catch up.
If you're taking Physics 114 and have to choose between Wu and Besson, choose Wu. Her exams start off easy, but become more and more difficult. Use the explained practice problems in her slides, the iClickers, and previous year's exams to study. I mean it when I say memorize the lectures. If I had done that I would've gotten a better grade.
Got an A both semesters, but I saw more grey hairs on my head. Don't take it with her, but if you have to, go through all lectures slides, Clicker questions, and practice exams. Not a nice person at all.
Literally do not take her
dumb ahh class and dumb ahh teacher. she sucks and so does the whole physics department, so ur better off at a community college.
I love Dr. Wu. Her class is hard, don't get me wrong, however, she is extremely clear about what you need to do to succeed in the class. All of the exams are very similar to the practice ones she posts online. She is always available to help work through problems.
Don't listen to the person below me, she really is a bad professor. Not only is her class super difficult, she is a terribly rude person. She told me that she wouldn't want me as her doctor and she accused me of being someone that I am not. However, the whole physics department sucks, so if you had to take this class, I guess do it with her.
She is not the type
