very nice and seems to be easy
Really uptight in his laboratory. Has major passive aggressive issues and has a tendency to explode when provoked with a simple question or if the slightest thing is wrong. Will never help you with administrative issues such as registration if it's a prob
He as a really funny prounonciation of some words. He was very eay in my opinion. He gives an extra credit paper...trust me do it! my avg was around a 72 in the class because i failed the final and i received an A+ in the course.
The class is basically memorization. He's nice and explains anything if you need him to. His tests aren't hard, but he's a strict grader.
he doesnt really know whats hes talking about
Guy has memorized his stupid slides and if you ask anything other than his slides...he says "lets not get into that". tests are weird, questions are multip choice but can b more than one answer or cud b none...really weird guy..
bad I did not like his lectures
TWO THUMBS DOWN.he doesnt give any extra credit.gives you your grade according to his own mathematical equation.Gives 2 pretty hard midterms and a KILLER FINAL. For the Final you have to know 260 pgs of bio inside out. the final is worth 50% of your grade
His teaching was easy to follow for a difficult subject. Very helpful and tries to meet one's schedule if his office hours conflict with one's class schedule. Very clear and passionate about his subject.
He is an excellent professor. His teaching method shows that he commands the subject. Need to study: difficult mid terms and final. Very accessible and although very busy will take time if you show up at his lab to answer questions and go over material.
EXCELLENT, Very Enthusiastic Professor! One can tell that he has spent a great deal of time preparing his lectures. Makes the class interactive by asking questions from us (the students). Very accessible and easy going. Must study 'cause tests are not easy. Highly recomended.
Clearly not his area of expertise. Can't go off the cuff.
The class was not curved but the exams were so easy that most of us did not need a curve anyway. Go to his online site, which he updates using student feedback, for extra study materials and questions. He is clear, interesting, and very nice.
The tests are really straightforward. Polle is a nice and will always help. It's true that he doesn't know a lot of the details; that's why he can't answer some questions. Nonetheless, the coursepack and lectures sufficiently explain the material in order to answer the exam questions.
He is a good Professor. If you read the course packet and do the questions on line, you can do well in class. When it comes to tests, they are fair as long as you study.
Polle is not there to trick you. He is easy if you read the packet and do all the questions. He is helpful and overall one of the best bio professors in BC.
Polle isnt necessary. Just study the packet. Nice guy but I think he's more interested in what we think of him then what we learn from him. Perhaps if he knew the material better. much easier than 17 especially the tests.
Boring but easy.
Although the course fairly easy, and the tests passable, his lack of proficiency in the English language causes confusion tests, of which he is very unhelpful and coldhearted. Beware, A misunderstanding on your part can cost you your grade, and he will tell you so with that stupid smile on his face.
Hate him, cruel cold hearted professor who doesn't know his stuff, that is when I'm actually able to stay awake in his class
overall a good professor who puts alot of work into preparing for lecture and enjoys teaching, if u study its easy to do well, the tests are extremely straight foward, enjoy him cause he's one of the best in the bio dept.
come to class, the stuff he stresses in class is on the tests, dony have to know e/t in the reader but it is a good idea to read it quickly b4 the test, make sure u do the online questions and the questions in the reader, very similar and s/t same as test, overall a good prof. who actually cares
EASY!Attendance doesnt matter. I missed like three months of class; A+. The material is easy; Just cram 10 hours straight before the two midterms and the final and you have easy A+. Make sure you have some good notes and you read his online material and answer practice questions <<<-- at least 40% you'll see! and don't miss his review sessions!
when I took him there was no extra credit and no curve(even though syllabus said subject to curving) now I find out he is giving a huge curve where you can get as high as a 110. you are very lucky.
He doesnt have any visiting hrs so if ur confused make sure you get notes or ask someone questions or ask in class but his reader is very clear n helpful n his tests r straight from the reader but it takes full memorization of assigned chapters to do well on his tests besides that hes very fair :P
pretty boring but very thorough and smart
No Comments
he is very organized..
He is one of the best Bio prof. He is very helpful and actually cares about the students. I think if you are really serious about med school or grad school, you should be able to ace his class. One of the best prof. one can ever have.
he's a weirdo, he thanks people for coming to class, and his lecture is bull. EASY A+. Anyway get his book, read for a few hours before the exam. Go on his website and memorize the practice questions, out of 36 questions, you will have seen at least 15. 3 of the questions are xtra credit so, easy 100. But only 100 or higher average gets A+.
Straight up Easy and to the point, If you have a good memory skills, then you are guaranteed an A cuz everything come from the 100 plus book that is in black and white- lectures are boring as hell. Bring some food with you to keep urself busy. Or study a night in advance for about 10 hours and u get an A- thats what i did. hollar at the boy
He's funny. like everyone else said, attendance does not matter, just ace is exams. u have nothing else to worry about. U should attend the lectures because some of the diagrams he draws are on the exam! Pay attention to them!
please dont take him. he is a.....he thinks he is the best professor in the world which is not true. he gives only 3 exams if u do bad in any you dead........
BOOOORING..easy A, just teach yourself from his $110 scam of a book...dont waste time going to class, go to review, study online material, and read book b4 test...If you have half a brain you got yourself an A...goodluck highly recomended if you know how to read & understand on your own
Class was a little boring, but I found that for the last test, when I had actually gone to elcture and taken good notes, to have done considerably better. It helps to have somehtign aside form his book to study from. Not an 'easy A', but relatively, he's one of the easier ones in the Bio department.
He is very knowledgeble and really enjoys teaching. I really enjoyed his class, he teaches very clearly and understandable. Everything he teaches is in his reader, he says its not but it is. I reccomend him if you really want to know what BIO is about. Not an easy A but if you study, youll do well.
hes very unhelpful, for those who never took a biology class before in their lives and are stuck haveing to take that class.I mean c'mon all I asked was which other books I could read to catch up.
He is totally the man. Great sense of humor, compassionate, VERY intelligent and has lots to offer the field. I wasn't that interested in the course when I signed up for it and by the time I was done I was HOOKED on the topic! I'm happy I took this course with him.
Go 2 his classes. Take as many notes as possible, even if they r in the reader. Make ur own notes using the notes u took in class, his reader, & his online notes. After u r done with creating ur notes, start studying 2 days b4. Memorize everything. U'll definitely get at least an A-. He helps if u e-mail him or ? him after class. His exams r fair.
Very smart prof. Knows his stuff very well. Tests are extremely fair and most of the material is in the reader. Only a few things are from the lectures. You must take notes and memorize the reader before the test. Doing that will assure you at least an A-
He is clear and tries to be really fair. he explains everything in deatil and repeats, because he hates to give bad grades. He will do everything to get the message across. Unlike his collegues in the Bio department: He is open to critique and to changes! This man is meant to teach and he loves his work and research.
Prof Polle wa cool. His class was pretty decent. Just read the reader and you'll be good. Pay close attention to the questions on the test, one word can make a big difference. Really serious about attendance, but you can always get a friend to sign you in. Once again, make the reader ur best friend, and you got your A+......
This dude is EXCELLENT. His class is very interactive so be sure to study. He is very organized and very intense about his work. Always available during office hours and by appointment. Need to study for tests as they are straight forward but lots of material to cover. Very clear and fair.
Prof. Polle was born to teach. He likes what he does and it shows in the way he conducts his class. I highly recommend him; I was hesitant about taking the class. Glad I did. Very approachable and he does keep office hours the moron that said he did not is not in this planet. He is cool and if you study and memorize ur guaranteed an A+
Classes are ok, but his textbook is awful, with many grammatical errors making it hard to understand. The test are not very hard, but there is no curve and if you do poorly on one you are finished. The class requires straight memorization--doesn't give enough background for the material and expects you to understand it in all its complexity.
Easy? YES. Basically to get by in this class just listen to the lectures (recommend taking notes) and read your reader! Even he says it, the tests are based on the reader and all tests have built in extra credit. Definitely use the online resources like practice tests and his sumaries, he tells you all you need to know for tests, and he nice too!
Professor Polle was relatively unhelpful, however his online review gives you all information. Even though he doesn't seem like a nice guy you should still be able to get an A without any effort.
Very easy. He puts online all needed information for the midterm and final exam, including sample tests. If you run the tests 20 times, you will get 100.
He is a straight forward profesor. There are no tricks. Whatever is in the textbook is what you get. If u can memorize a few chapters, there is no possible way of fail. Its an easy A.
Very straightforward. 3 exams, all easy. He practically gives the same questions as on his website. Lectures are not boring. Don't get used to this though, other bio classes are a lot tougher.
Very nice guy. test are STRAIT forward!!!probably the easiest Bio class you will ever take at BC.EASY A!!! DONT HESITATE TO TAKE!!!!
Yes, it is easy to get a good grade, but the actual class time is pretty bad. It's quite boring. Not to mention, Polle seems to be unique in his ability to teach just enough info to get us confused, but not enough to give us a sufficient understanding in order to relieve the confusion.
He is a very excellent professor. He tells you what is going to be on the test in class, very, very, emphatically. If you listen well, and study, and do all the workshops, you will get an nice grade. His class is also a good review for Biology: structure and function will help you on the tests. He is always very busy but he will help you. I liked h
He is a great professor. He explains things very clearly, always answers questions. His tests are straightforward, and most of the questions are from his notes. I learned a lot from his class and I highly recommend him.
Prof. Polle is easily accessible outside of class and is very friendly. His workshops are completely useless, but easy points. The midterm and final-the only 2 exams-are extremely easy. He posts an online exam that has all the questions on it. Workshop attendance is mandatory, but lecture attendance isn't. Definitely take him for an easy A.
hate this man
Great Professor! Wish the rest of the professors of Brooklyn College will take the example from his way of teaching!Only useful info!! Nothing else!!!
easiest class you'll ever take as a bio major or pre-health student. get someone to sign your name on the attendance and you don't even need to show up to class (showing up is useless anyway, can't understand the guy and his crazy chicken scratch hand writing)
He is not engaged in the class as I would like, but his exams are extremely fair. He doent ask anything that he hasnt mentioned in class and everything is right out of the textbook. He doessnt always take attendance. You're garunteed an A if you just read the chapters he assigns. He doesnt go over tedious details.
CONS:I'm nit sure whether or not attending the lecture helps.BC policy on several absences=FAILURE.PROS:You should read the out of the book and do the online Quiz and Pre-Test questions(and focus!) for each chapter that will come on the test;that will get you above an 80% per test GUARANTEED.That's on a last night cramming! imagine regular studying
Dr Polle is special professor; has his own style and methods. H.w. is vital to get with an A from his class. He actually teaches; and doesn't just read from the book, compared to many others. TAKE HIM , BEST
do not take him! take McEntee, or Mclean or anyone BUT HIM. he can't teach. He goes through his slides, doesn't give them out, & then skips half the material in his powerpoint. His tests are VAGUE and they're not even testbanks. You honestly have no clue what is on his tests; we had an 11 chapter final. take mcentee, she teaches and u can get an A!
proff polle is horrible stay far far AWAY!! i happen to love bio but his class is horrible, he doesnt teach and his tests are incomprehesible, doesnt respond to emails and is a very unpleasant person. doesnt know how to teach worst proff ever
stay AWAY! doesn't teach clearly, you'll never know exactly what or how to study for tests. going to class is pointless because he's confusing
Although he didn't teach well like other professors, he focus on what will be on his exams. This would help you save time to focus on the specific topic on the exam. Final exam is much simple and easy than the midterm exam. As long as yo attend his class and take note, you will be fine.
he is more focused on whats important for the exams. study the online master biology homework. that's where most the exam comes from. his teaching methods is unclear. attendance obsessed i got a B.
okay im a bio and chem major and I can tell you right now that I spent more time studying for his bio one exams then for any of my other science courses I have taken. hes very unclear about everything! literally memorize the whole book the only way to get a decent grade
This professor is very confusing. He doesn't know how to teach. Even the his test questions are confusing just like him. It's a big mistake taking his class. Even if you study the book inside out, you can not get a decent grade because of his unclear questions.
This professor expects you to read through all the textbook chapters and does a terrible job actually teaching the material. I don't feel I managed to learn a thing from him- expect to teach yourself. Do not not NOT take him if you don't have to! Save yourself the trouble. All those hours of studying and I managed a B. Not worth it though.
You literally don't need to go to class. I had to study out of the book all by myself the entire semester because he would often say "we don't have time, read the textbook at home". More and more seats became empty as the semester went by. However, they were all magically filled up on test day! Tells you a lot...
Lecture basically consists of pre-made slides, which he reads out, and which he refuses to share with the class. So you don't know whether to listen to him or take notes, and you end up getting nothing out of the class. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Professor Polle is an AWESOME instructor. I have taken two of his courses and have received A+ in each class. He is passionate about his subject and it shows. If you read the chapter before lecture everything will be so clear after lecture. I am a pre Med Bio major and I wish all the other Professors where like him in the department.
Polle is as worst as they get. unhelpful, rude, makes you feel stupid, and doesn't teach. Even though I got an A, I would't recommend him to my greatest enemies. Biology class with him is a cruel and unusual punishment.
I would not recommend this class to anyone with this professor. He does not care if you are failing his exams, does not curve and assigns a lot of homework that has nothing to do with his exam. He said more than 50% percent of the class is failing. He is horrible outside of class as well. He does not want to help or care of it.
as a lab instructor he gives more work than other bio lab professors gives homework assignments on top of pop quizzes every lab short answer questions are expected for every exam cumulative final exam makes you do way too much work for a lab course
He is not helpful, a terrible lecturer. he is not clear in his lectures. he is not present at office hours to be helpful. 50% failed his first bio test. He does not test according to his lectures. to do well, you have to memorize the book yourself
For the love of god, do not take biology with him. He is rude, stubborn, and is NOT there to help you. He skips past slides, does not explain well at all, and does not share his powerpoints. Like everyone says, memorize the whole textbook if you want to have a chance at passing this class. Beware of the tests as well.
umm, i though Biol 1 is the simplest class.... however, i found it harder than calculus .
The professor's lecture is all over the place and when you've been told to study for this as "exam-relevant". On the test, the way he words his question is very weird. You must at least read it 3 times to get what the question is asking. Whatever he says, it becomes the opposite of what he tells the students. I'd say don't get this teacher at all.
Most of the class has a failing grade, his tests questions are ambiguous and are all multiple choice.
didn't wear my seat belt on my way to class because i wish i died before i got there.
I cannot emphasize enough how horrible he is at teaching. He will leave you more confused than you would have been just reading the textbook. He tells you what will be exam relevant but will not actually put it on the exam, and he'll put a lot of questions on topics that he didnt empahsize in class. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Juergen Polle is the type of man Who will walk in without a lesson plan He will talk and he will mumble Several times he might even stumble Then he says time for the exam! So you go home and cram cram cram! Lo and behold you still managed to fail So you start crying in your lunch pail He sucks dont put yourself through this. trust me.
Prof Polle's high standards/expectations should not entice a student looking to take on a challenge. There is a theory that he's not American so he translates things (questions) differently causing mass confusion. He isn't a bad man, but his tests differ too much from what he offers. Firm. Stubborn. Authoritative. Confusing. Unclear.
He's such a charmer.
Brooklyn college should be ashamed for hiring a person like that. He is the worst professor I've ever had. If you do not like teaching just give up!! do not torture people just to get a paycheck at the end of the week. Whatever he says will be on the exam will not be, and the opposite is true. Please stop teaching!!
I was automatically assigned him my first semester with no choice in the matter. If I can tell you one thing please don't take him. I am ultimately repulsed by even the mention of his name now. The class average for the first two exams was a 50! How is that even possible. He was hired for research so he does not care about teaching and doesn't.
These reviews aren't too off from reality but he tries, really. It's the end of the semester and he's been making the class laugh a few times. He gives advice on how to study and use your mind and form study groups but because he says it so seriously: it appears as though he's being mean. You need to study hard if you want to come close to passing.
Need to buy access for connect with textbook and assignment are posted right there (that costs $120) Tests are not easy, and 1/5 of the questions are "according to lecture", that the professor emphasized a lot and may sometimes overwrite the content in textbook.
Lectures are fairly dull and not too clear. Ive learned more from the textbook than i've learned from his lectures. His tests are very long and quite confusing. It consists of 50 multiple choice questions that include definitions, theory, and logic. He's a fairly strict teacher with no curves or extra credit assignments. So study well for his tests
Tough.
Don't ever take this course if you value your GPA. I'm a freshmen student and this class will be the reason why I'm starting off which such a low average. Do NOT expect Dr. Polle to answer ANY of your questions. He either embarrasses you or dismisses it without acknowledging it. On his second midterm, no one got higher than an 84! He doesn't curve!
Worst professor I've ever encountered in my life.
His tests are confusing. He asked question like " according to what we learned in the lecture...." which is will be a different answer from the book. Also, he often has his own answer which is different from the book, so you will mark wrong if you choose the book answer. I would not recommend this professor and good luck for those chose him!
He puts up slides to just skip through them and says memorizing things won't help you in anything
I took him last semester and had to drop the class. There are 3-4 midterms, and a final at the end, they are all REALLY hard. I had to hire a tutor for the class and it still didn't help. After i failed the 2nd test i dropped him. Also, the website he uses with online quizzes, doesnt work. His HW took me 2 hrs to do & nothing to do with the tests.
Brooklyn college should not hire professors like him. He should be sued for the emotional breakdown of students.
He's terrible and his orange crocs are incredibly distracting. Avoid him at all costs.
Very nice professor
Class only meets a few times in the beginning and to review for midterms and finals. Review sessions were completely useless since he goes over the super basic stuff like what is an atom rather than what is actually going to be on the test. Gets really mad when people ask questions. Not a nice guy at all and his orange crocs are a huge distraction.
When it comes to the exams, the questions are super tough. You won't understand what he is trying to ask. Maybe he should get his tests reviewed by someone who knows English grammar before giving them. Avoid at ALL costs!
It is a hybrid. He gave us the wrong syllabus with the wrong dates and passcode. Ended up not submitting something late by a few hours and he would not give me any credit or extension even though I was, in my mind, submitting it a week earlier than his syllabus. He also doesn't show up to class, respond to emails, or respect excused absences.
We met a few times in the beginning of the semester, once before the midterm, and once before the final. I consider him a reasonable and fair professor. I had an issue with submitting my first lab, contacted the instructor for three weeks with no reply, emailed him once and the lab was unlocked and I was able to submit. He's passionate about bio.
He teaches based on Connect PP slides and majority of his exam questions comes from connect. If you don't review the material from connect, you're most likely not going to understand what he's saying and there is a lot of note taking for the Connect assignments.
Professor Polle is a very respectful professor. During his office hours, he is more keen to listen to one's situation. A lot of students complain about his exam structure, however this is due to one's work ethics. Exam are pretty fair. 40-50 questions. Be ready to READ THE CHAPTERS BEFORE THE CLASS!
I have professor Polle for Bio 2 Lab and he is absolutely amazing. What you are being graded on is very clear and his quizzes are more than fair. He will give you partial credit for almost anything close to the topic. Study just a little and you can easily do good in his class. Makes me enjoy biology.
very unclear, makes u take ur own notes after class because he shuts the slides off during class. doesnt curve, tests are so confusing. way too much hw, tests have 10+ chapters on them. extremely mentally draining and just does not care for his students and does not try to help us improve with our grades. do not take this professor.
I am not sure why Dr. Polle has such bad reviews. I believe that it depends on your work ethic. Obviously, this is a General Biology Lecture course, so it will be tough. Dr. Polle had his doors open for office hours and would answer any tough questions you had. Dr. Polle strived to make this course as simple as possible. Gave condensed slides.
Professor Polle is great, he does his part in teaching. He doesn't just read off the slides and actually draws and explains really well. He literally tells us what to study for. I would definitely take him again because he genuinely cares for his students and answers emails really quickly.
I had Professor Polle for bio 1002 lab and I recommend taking him. He is very generous with grading on quizzes and assignments. By that, I mean he will offer partial credit or still give you the full points on an assignment despite it being too short or so. As for the quizzes, just spend time on the review sheets he hands out. They help out a lot.
Polle is a very knowledgable professor, you can tell he knows a lot about Biology and presents himself very clearly. He will go in depth during lectures providing drawings and important details on the board, not just reads off slides. He posts the slides online and you can use them to study. Just remember to always study for his exams, 50 q MC
I took Professor Polle in spring 2023 and this is my review. I found Professor Polle to be a great lecturer he really wants you to pay attention and he loves drawing on the white board and making images. He explained concepts well. yet, i found his exams to be hard for no reason. half the class dropped the course. if you take him, study well.
Polle is okay. His lectures might seem boring at times, and he is good at explaining certain topics. He enjoys drawing out concepts and asking questions. Tests, being majority of the grade, are rather hard. To do decently, dedicate a couple days to memorizing the slides. I wouldn't take him again because of the hard tests.
AVOID
This professor has issues. His teaching style is one of the most unhelpful I've ever experienced. He goes on tangents and fails to teach us all the material needed for the test on time. He is inaccessible outside of class. He is in one word the most useless professor at Brooklyn College. Do not take him, because you will regret it.
Professor Polle is very knowledgeable, I agree with a previous review that he often goes on tangents. He tends to focus entirely on one topic and neglect other ones that are present on the test. He prefers to teach visually, drawing a lot on the board; This is somewhat helpful. Your grade is dependent upon very few assignments.
Prof. Polle is a decent instructor for lab and does what is necessary for students to understand the assignments. He can be strict at times but he is also flexible with his grading on quizzes.
No clue where the good reviews come from. Exams are HARD this is said from somebody with a gpa of 4.0, there's no make-up or extra credit. He's dismissive, never answers questions, just says "not now." This is the worst class I've ever taken lectures are confusing and hard to understand, and he mostly just draws on the board. Avoid him if you can.
He draws a ton during lectures, about half of his slides aren't actually exam relevant, his favorite saying is "we don't have time to discuss that right now", and grades are purely based off homework assignments and tests.
Prof Polle, isn't one of the best professors I've had he's just okay I guess, he's only nice during office hours, his exams are unnecessarily hard. As the semester went on, the class size kept reducing until I could count everyone in the room lol. If you take him, be prepared to study really hard. Overall I'll rate him a 5/10 (POP MY BALOON)
Professor Polle can be a hit or miss, but if you engage with his teaching style, you'll find the class rewarding. The lectures are visual-heavy, so staying focused is key. Utilize resources like the textbook, slides, and tools like Unstuck study to prep for the challenging exams.
Lectures are boring, but he stops taking attendance after a while. All you need to pass is read the textbook ($184), review the slides, and do the Connect assignments. 40% of grade is tests, 10% is all Connect assignments. His tests are insanely easy if you read the textbook. His office hours are when most students have class which is kinda weird
His lectures are kind of a time waster to go to, he explains stuff vaguely. However, his connect assignments are very easy -- easy 100% in that category as long as you do all of them, and his exams are very straightforward -- multiple choice only, meaning just work on recalling, and you should be fine. Overall he seems like a nice guy.
Prof Polle class is slide heavy. I would say he's a good professor and he does give good information. 4 exams once a month (worth 40%) and then online homework (10%). Attendance isnt mandatory, but I would recommend going because he draws and talks about stuff that is not on the slides. Exams aren't hard, but they are also not easy. Lot of studying
This professor killed all sense of hope I've had. Study guides and study materials often do not correlate with the exams. The professor pointed out that many people failed the last exam, so he should "Make the final exam even harder." This professor is very condescending and hostile when you ask him a question. Just choose a different lecturer.
Worst professor in my 4 years of college. Refuses to be helpful, his tests are impossible unless you're retaking the class, lectures are spent either screaming or whispering material, and overall wants to see his students fail. If you can avoid him please do. I wish I could go back in time and avoid this man at all costs!
There are 3 midterms and 1 final. The final is weighted equally to a midterm. The Connect homework is also weighted the same as a midterm. The tests are difficult. 80% of his test are based on the slides and 15% on lecture. Attendance is required to score 90%+ but you could skip and still get 80s if you memorize the slides. Each test is 50 mcqs.
The study guides & study material barely correlate with the exams. His midterms are hard to pass. In class he pointed out that almost half the class got certain questions wrong that were "easy" (some like that). Then he said that he should "Make the final exam even harder" which shocked me. If I could go back I would not take him. AVOID IF YOU CAN!
His tests are MCQ, they're straight forward as long as you study. Attendance isn't mandatory after a few weeks, he stops doing sign in sheets. But he draws important diagrams in class, which come up on the exams.
His feedback is awful, he doesn't know how to teach and loves listening to himself. When you have. A question its always dismissed with either you know too much, we'll talk about it later, or im not sure. His exams are all conceptual, 50 mcq, and difficult. He praises himself and his lectures just confuse you. Don't take him.
