Graduate TA but very knowledgable. She is really smart and her class is really interesting. The tests aren't too hard but it is difficult to get an A because she doesn't curve.
She is very helpful but her grading is a bit bizarre sometimes with what she expects. Her British accent always makes class seem interesting.
Exams are extremely hard and tricky. Her lectures are VERY VERY boring. You won't ever want to go to class, it sucks.... stay away!!!
this professor is IMPOSSIBLE. do NOT take her unless you are looking to fail and fall asleep during every class. you can study day and night for her exams. but the more you study, the worse you will do.

She lectures with no visual aids except for random words that she writes on the board. The random words that she writes on the board are not that helpful. The most confusing exams that I ever had to take, ever! She made my headache with every lecture.
Pushes students to read the book as a reference. Her powerpoints are crammed with photo's and diagram. Class discussions helped me alot. Always helpful in offcie hours. Some of the theory is a little dry, but I guess that always is.

Her notes are typed-not off the internet (saw them in office hours!) You don't have to use PPT for every class, listening and interacting are just as important as looking at PPT:) Using the book as a reference worked well. Her foreign perspective got us thinking about another POV; smart lady.
I would study hard and come away with C's. I was always unsure of what was going to be on the test so you would have to read everything covered more than once. Most teachers seem easier than she was, but it could have been the subject.
used a lot of slides that were pretty much pointless and confusing.
This was quite possibly the most dissapointing class I have ever taken. I was very excited about the subject matter, and her vague test questions and inability to tell her students which chapters were on upcoming tests let alone provide any sort of study guide for them, completely ruined what could have been one of my more interesting GECs.
This professor really jumps around in her notes and its hard to make sense of the material. Not a fun class, very boring-amount of study time does not correlate to test scores.
HORRIBLE! Don't take any of her classes! She is out to get you! She is only a photographer and she doesn't know half about the stuff she says! You can study all you want but it is almost impossible to get an A on an exam. She isn't clear about homework and when you do it she will give you 0 out of 10 b/c she didn't explain it well enough!
She goes through the slides faster than most of us can write and that is a little annoying, but other than that this class was not too terrible. I didn't expect an A, I am not very good at memorization. I am hopeful that I will get a B or maybe B+. And I guess I am the only person who thinks she is kind of sexy in a sort of brainy chick way.
Horrible! Her powerpoints don't give you any information. She doesn't give you study guides so you never know what will be on the exams. The questions on the tests are hard and some of the most random things that you barely talked about during class. Do not take any of her classes.
I don't know what all the negative comments are about. IN my class she was thrilled when we got above average on the test and gave more A's than are usual. Her handouts are great, and office hours are also good for making sure you inderstand what's what. She told us many times, "if I teach it, it could be on the exam" - so no surprises at all.
Very Interested in the material and willing to help.
Very entertaining and insightful- this class covered a lot of material but Jules did a great job with keeping it managable.
Interesting, informative. Really helped me to see things from a new perspective and realize how ethnocentric we can be without knowing it. Tests were fair--taken from the articles we studied. She posted questions online for us to study from. Would have preferred to have a textbook, but it is a class about the contemporary world...
Thought she was a great teacher and fun too in the beginning until she sent out an email stating how disappointed she was at us for having been fidgety during a movie and how we should be respectful since its the U.S's fault. Felt like a kindergarten student and having the teacher yell at me. also has favorites so better hope your one of them.
The subject matter in this class is riveting -too bad she can't really manage to lead a discussion. The class isn't necessarily difficult, but grading seems arbitrary sometimes. She has a tendency to send out patronizing passive aggressive emails if class doesn't go quite the way it should, if attendance is low, etc.
Did not like this TA at all. Rude condescending emails and boring class.
the worst teacher ever.has her favorites and you better hope your one of them or your not going to do well in the final, attendance etc. likes to send out stupid emails about low attendance, being fidgety during a movie and making us feel like we were young children.discussions horrible. if you want to get the class of track just say: walmart!
Should not be a difficult class but her endless amount of work and tough grading make it quite difficult. But then, she is knowledgable on what she is teaching. If that count as a bonus. And be prepared to wait several days for her to respond to your email, if she will ever reply at all. You will be ok if u GO TO CLASS, PARTICIPATE AND DO HER WORK!
Great class, great GTA. It's unfortunate that the material (which was really interesting) was wasted on students that mostly had no interest in learning about those less fortunate than us here in the USA and were only taking the class because it was required. Encouraging to see a Prof. take their job seriously. Attendance is highly encouraged.
Lots of reading about diverse subjects and questions from readings are posted on a website and these questions are on exams too. She is very STRICT about attendance, but if you don't go you miss quizzes, notes and ideas etc. Sometimes the subjects are very depressing, but I guess not all course can be happy. She knows alot and seems nice.
If you want to do well in this class be prepared to attend class and pay attention. Jules was willing to answer questions and keep discussions on track. Some of what was covered was depressing but important to be aware of. Would reconnebd for serious student only.
She let the students run her class and she barely taught or kept the discussion on track. She had her favorites and if you were not one of them then she made it seem that your opinions were not valid ones. Even though she is a horrible GA, the course material is very intersting and the class is easy as long as you participate and show up.
only take this class if you are interested and i mean very intersted in women's issues in developing countries. ATTENDANCE is required. if you are a senior looking for a very depressing serious class take this one. she was not very helpful and actually downright judgemental and grades on a person to person basis so get on her good side. NO GOOD!
She was very helpful to alot of people from what I saw, and the grades are based on whether you got a question right or not; that's simple. The depressing matrial is really not her fault, that's reality for you. Go to this class for some eye-opening stuff. If you don;t study or go to class, expect a bad grade.
What is wrong with you people? Blaming the TA for a depressing class? Blaming her when you get a bad grade cos you didn't come to class? God forbid when you get a real job the boss will actually want you to come to work and do unhappy jobs for apaycheck. Should college always be fun and entertaining - go work at Disney land.
she was really easy with her materials but she was really silly when it came to attendence for the simple fact that she treated us like little children. and as for the person whos comment was before mine, you must have been obviously one of her favorites cuz im not writitng this cuz i got a bad grade im writing this bad review cuz she was horrible!
i loved this class! jules was always so willing to meet and help with whatever you were having a problem with. the only problem i really had was staying alive for the entire hour and 48 minutes without a break.
I liked her. She's enthusiastic and helpful. She has relatively high standards for performance which is reflected in her tests. But I didn't think they were too hard. Don't take her if you're looking for an easy A; however, if you are interested in getting something out of a GEC and aren't painfully stupid, you'll like her.
If you are just interested in showing up for an A then don't bother with her classes. She makes you work at getting a good grade - but isn'tthat good? As for the previous comment - you have to show your true value thru your work, what else is there to grade? Tough teacher, but you get alot out of it
I learnt alot. thanks
This class was fun, and you got to meet alot of experts. I thought this was a place for students to find out about a class? Can we please talk about the class and not have private conversations?
This was probably the hardest, most stressful class I took during my college career. The reading material was needlessly complicated and jargony, and she made us give oral presentations on barely understandable stuff. I had a nervous breakdown mid-quarter. The only good thing was that she gave us lots of choices as far as exam questions went.
This is the worst class I've ever taken! You have a different guest lecturer everyday even though Angel makes the exam...and she puts the most obsecure stuff on her tests that the lecturers barely go over! She is awful. Avoid this class!
You can bring one page of note to the exam. However, the exams were not easy.
Very hard course. Textbook is a MUST. Also must rely on your own study and drawing (you heard right) skills to learn things almost entirely on your own. Has a ridiculous mandatory attendance policy that she doesn't have any leeway on. Nit picky on spelling. Very stressful course.
Considering most of the bad reviews are posted 5+ years ago, I think her teaching style is no longer the same. Attendance is not mandatory, yet if you attend regularly she will be more likely to bump your grade up. Overall good teacher, straight forward exams. Biggest help is reading the textbook.
Dr. Angel likes to present most of her lectures verbally, with minimal powerpoint notes so you must pay attention in class or your notes will suck. The book isn't stressed at all in class but is helpful to read through when studying for exams. Attendance is mandatory! She is a really nice lady, so go to office hours right away if you're struggling!
I don't know what to make of previous comments, but Dr. Angel is a great teacher. Attendance is mandatory and she can be a stickler at grading, and while we never used the book, it's all I studied from bc her notes are sparse and she gives most information verbally. She isn't a cultural anthropologist and gets her tests and notes from a supplier.
Cool class with lectures by different experts. There's alot for an intor class, but that is usually the case. Have to keep up tho!
Neat class; good professor. Do the work, get agood grade!
If at all possible, TAKE A DIFFERENT SECTION. Angel's lectures are so scattered, making the book essentially useless. Her exams cover the most obscure information and the class was a drag. The only pro: her British accent.
Cool class, always had a break in the middle. Asks alot of q's in class so it's not all lecture.
A lot of stuff to learn, but good class.
Good class, nice prof.
She's a really nice professor with a sweet English accent. She gives you a break in the middle of every class to go get coffee! However, her lectures are very scattered, her PowerPoints aren't very organized in my opinion. USE THE BOOK - even if she says not to, because studying just from your lecture notes will not cut it for the exam.
Expectations for papers are ridiculous. Nice person though.
Awful. Ridiculous grader on papers. Way too much information. If you need a GEC, this should not be it.
She doesn't teach 95% of the class but when she does it's hard to listen to her. She complains when students are late even though she comes late very often if she even shows up. She is unwilling to help if you have a problem. Do not take this class if you do not want to be frustrated.
Prof. Angel, as nice and helpful as she is, is probably the most disorganized prof. I have ever had the misfortune of taking a class of. She does not give guidelines, and is not helpful at all in setting expectations and giving instructions. Sit for one week in her class, and you'll see what I mean.
One of the worst teachers i've ever had in my 4 years at OSU. Doesnt teach the class, responds with negative attitude in her emails, yells at class to be on time when she is frequently late and/or doesnt come, yells at class to not surf the internet in class even though her own TA surfs the web and emails non-stop. How is she a prof at OSU??......
Experst come into class to teach each subject; some are good some are not. Angel corrdinates the class; we were never without a lecturer-she did not come some days as she was out doing forensic work, but there was a sub TA. As for her TA emailing, I guess he knows the content and so doesnt need to take notes?easy pts doing take home study q's
Tough class but interesting; some lecturers are not great others are good. do the work and you will get a good grade.
Jules was a great professor. I took her honors anthropology course, which was the first time they offered it with a lab component. The course has some quirks that need to be worked out, but Jules was extremely helpful and willing to explain anything. Doesn't use textbook at all. Great class, not the easiest but I would definitely recommend Jules.
I took the 2201H class. The professor was interested in the material, but was unclear in lecture. STUDY for the exams well in advance -- they are HARD. There were very little points offered, making this an extremely hard class. If you're looking for an easy-A GEC this is NOT the class you should take. My GPA took a beating after this class.
DO NOT TAKE. This was most boring and poorly organized class I have ever taken. The grading is unreasonably harsh for a GEC even an honors one. I am honors business student and this was my most difficult class. Professor only cares about outside research. Incredible amount of information given and tested on the most random points.
I thought lectures were engaging and the topics interesting being an Anthropology Major. BUT she grades way too hard and the writing assignments are worth just as much as exams. Make sure to know her specific writing requirements and study well in advance for exams, they are really too hard for a GE class.
Extremely hard teacher! She gives you the tools to complete the class but god help you if you ask her a question by email or by stopping her office during her office hours she will just treat you like you are stupid. She also thinks US sucks, so back to the UK then!! I changed my minor because of her!
She is the hardest grader I have ever had. Even harder than Dr. Jacobs in the Sociology department. She tests on the most scares subjects in the course and grades them extreme hard. If you ask to meet her outside of class to clear up a subject she acts like you are being a big inconvenience to her. This is the C+ I have received at OSU.
She helped me alot during office hours.
If you want to hate anthropology, she is the first choice, always.
She is a very knowledgeable instructor but does teach very well at all. Here assignments a vague and be little's you if you email with a question. She assumes that you know a lot of things that a lot of us didn't know.
She makes you think not just learn - why is that so bad. Mainly haters on here t seems
Only take this class if you want and unclear and unresponsive professor. She takes her time answering emails, she test you on unclear during class. Her exams test you on factoids, rather than your knowledge of the material as a hole. She defiantly has a chip on her shoulder against teaching undergrads.
I have NO idea why most of these reviews are so negative. This was arguably the easiest class I took this semester. I mean, you really do have to go to class and pay attention, but it's all pretty straightforward. And Jules is really interesting to talk to!
This class was good - we had discussions about current stories, videos, and used the web to find out stuff nobody knew. Loved it!
This class was one of the toughest AND most rewarding classes at OSU. Work hard & go to class, you will get an A. Her expectations are a little confusing at first but go to office hours & demonstrate that you're trying she'll help you understand. Problem is that many students want things handed to them. This is truly a university level course
Labs are easy. basically show up and you get the grade. Literally, I act like I am working. Easy reading every week for homework. Lectures are dumb, she just talks for the whole hour. Exams are HARD. she doesn't tell you anything that is going to be on the exam. She expects you to know EVERYTHING from notes, the book, the lab. I hate her class.
Fairly easy A as long as you go to class and do all the labs. The exams, although you can do bad on and still do well in the class, are hard. She doesn't give any review guide and gives you know idea what will be on them. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK - everything is on powerpoints.
She's really interesting and seems like a super cool person. She seems to actually care about her students. That being said, I feel like she makes the class unnecessarily hard. She says "she doesn't teach the test," but she writes the tests...Also, you MUST go to class to do well, she's super strict about attendance.
One of the worst professors I've had here at OSU. Not a fan of the expert lecturers; v. difficult to learn from them. Lectures are too dense for what the tests cover. Honestly, the book is your best friend. She's super strict about attendance but she's rarely there. Would not recommend this section unless you want to be frustrated.
The experts have good stories about cases - some are tough tho. Do everything the syllabus says or you won't pass. Not easy, but why should it be
I didn't enjoy the labs because they were just busy work and often needlessly confusing for how simple they were. Her tests are NO JOKE. You better have good notes. She is also easily diverted from topic during lecture, due to honors kids needing to show off. That part of the class was painful.
liked it - loads of experts to talk to
lots of homework but we had no classes
We had a guest speaker almost every day, all but 2 days. Must attend class in order to pass, just based on points. Speakers were interesting because they are in the forensic fields they were teaching us. Does not give study guides. Literally anything could be on the exams. Study questions are confusing in the textbook but the book is interesting.
Labs were graded on participation, over 50% of overall grade consists of labs/easy prelab quizzes, exams could be difficult due to lack of study guide but were fair
One of the worst professors I have had here at OSU. Lectures are boring and basically consist of her just spewing out information, and then she expects you to memorize everything for her extremely hard tests, the same tests that she gives no study guide for. Everything is from the ppts, but she doesn't put them online. Avoid at all costs.
By far my least favorite professor. The class alone is based on scattered information but she offers no help by making every assignment super vague. My biggest problem was she did not answer a single email, making it nearly impossible to contact her if you had questions. No study guide for exams & she grades hard. If you see her name at all, run!!!
Prof. Angel was a joy to learn from. She was obviously an expert in the field and had a myriad of interesting stories and jokes to go along with her lectures, all of which were clear and easy to follow. The textbooks she uses are good supplements to the course, but if you go to the lectures you can be guaranteed a good grade. Easy labs. Great class
It's hard to rate this professor since she brings in guest speakers, who are experts in their field, to teach that part of the class. She doesn't give any info as far as what to study for the test and each test covers a substantial amount of info. Take home pop quizzes are easy. No extra credit. I study very hard and still might end up with only B
One of the worst professors at OSU. I would never take any class she is teaching. Stay away from her class. Very rude when she replies to your emails (in case she does). Very strict on attendance, even though she is hardly there. Not willing to help you at all.
I really enjoyed this class with Dr. Angel. She is really sweet and very funny. Her lectures were always very interesting, and she does grade attendance. She gives very little homework, with one assignment per week that is not difficult at all. Her exams can be tricky.
Dr. Angel is an okay professor. You will have very few grades, and it's not going to be easy to receive an A. She has strict policies, and gets EXTREMELY POLITICAL in class. Maybe it was because this course was during election season, but I felt that 90% of this class was spent discussing non-related political issues that put us behind in material.
She is the absolute worst. Spits out information during lecture and scratches it on the board in handwriting you cant read, then expects you to remember for an exam in 3 weeks. Her exams are impossible and she is a rude teacher to talk to. If you go up and talk to her about a bad exam she will lecture you on how you suck at taking notes.
Dr. Angel makes Anthropology accessible and engaging. She does give study guides for tests, so test prep can be difficult, but labs and prelabs serve as buffers for your grade. She is very helpful if you ask for help. But you have to ask! You cant expect to have your hand held through this class.
Extremely inaccessible. She is rarely there because she has experts in the field teach the lectures. She often admits she doesn't know much about the different fields of forensics, so why should she test students over it? If you don't have an excuse for your absence, be prepared to miss take home quizzes. Tough attendance policy. Miss four and done
The book wasn't needed; anything on the test was covered in class. Dr. Angel is very knowledgeable and personable, so if you have questions, ask! Be prepared for lots of note taking and memorization.
Brings in outside lecturers, which I enjoyed. The exams include a wide range of information but if you're well prepared you'll be fine.
Not sure why there is so much negativity about Dr. Angel. She is funny and will tailor the class to what you want to talk about. She doesn't give a study guide for her tests but the material comes from the notes (not the readings) and I did not struggle much with them (although I had some anthropology background). Lots of opportunities for points
If you are taking this as a gen ed don't! It was a lot of work and took a lot of my time up that shouldn't for a gen ed. A lot of writing every week, and exams were really hard.
I don't understand some of these comments. She will pretty much excuse any absenc e with a drs note, flight email, etc. anything. And she emails back at nights and weekends too
Good choice for this class!
Tough but you'll learn alot.
Her instructions for assignments are like 5 paragraphs and often contradictory and confusing. Grading criteria is unclear. She takes off points for EVERYTHING. Miss one comma? Well then, the highest grade you can get is a B. No matter how hard I work in this class, I still have not managed to get an A on a single assignment. Do not recommend.
Loads of info, loads of experts, work on a case throough class!!
Dr. Angel is my queen. She is clearly knowledgeable on the subject and has experience. She had many -isms that I found amusing and made lecture an enjoyable experience. No study guide, although the content is pretty much straight from the textbook. Tests are fair and hard; but, labs count for half of your grade and they're free points.
She knows her material but can't teach very well. Her homework is hard and directions are very unclear, she gets mad when people ask questions. Gives no direction for studying, lectures are all over the place. If you fail a test good luck passing. Also homework is worth a crazy amount of points so don't mess up.
Dr. Angel is one of the worst professors that you will ever have. Every assignment she has is worth a ton of points, and if you do not do well, it drops your grade down by a lot. She does not even offer extra credit to help bring your grade up. Also, her test are super hard and she does not offer any study guide to help you.
Lots of homeworks, but take home and loads of time to complete. Not sure why people didn't like this class. It was fine for the level and major.
I want to be an arcaheologist so this class was great info, and Dr. Angel was way helpful. I guess others here were not that into it.
Took honors version and it was the most boring class ever. Half the class is easy A quizzes and labs. The exams are very tough because there is a lot of material. If you put in a decent amount of work you'll be fine. It is just a very dry class and the teacher isn't very fun.
Online is fine, pandemic and all that
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE. I took this class as a GE and it quickly became more work and stress than any of my other classes. The labs are graded pretty leniently but are confusing and difficult to do. Dr. Angel herself came across as a little condescending and rude. Tests don't have enough time and can be graded very strictly.
Only two assignments (two exams) that focus on lecture content. All other points in class are easy story/presentation assignments. Online lectures are okay but she sometimes just reads through the PowerPoints. Exams were difficult if only the lecture notes were studied. Still not a hard course to do well in. Do your homework and attend Zooms.
Dr. Angel is very knowledgeable, but I will say she is a tough grader and the grading is not always consistent. if you email her about your grade, she is very kind about it, letting you know what you missed and is willing to give back points for any mistakes/confusions. zooms were very insightful, chatting with experts from diff forensic fields
Incredibly long and boring taped lectures that did not help much come exam time. Quizzes were easy and labs were incredibly confusing but were not graded hard. Exams were extremely difficult to get a good grade on even with hours of studying. The labs and quizzes would help to offset the terrible exams. Professor was very nice but not much help.
Took anthro 1100 class from her online as a graduating senior to fulfill a GE. HATED the way this class was laid out. The way she uses Carmen is super confusing. Referring to the syllabus was no help because its was like 25 pages of rambling that wasnt even organized well. Expects too much for 3 credit hours, did way better in my 5000 lvl classes
Easy lectures, tho some were a bit long. Stuff every week, but easy access thru Carmen. Solid into class.
She is the most inconsistent grader I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. She does not make things clear; she says one things, but expects another. She has made me hate forensic archeology. We did 4 weeks of just mapping a scene (which was absolutely unnecessary and a waste of everyones time). She is intellligent, but a BAD teacher.
nice professor and really understanding if you have questions about grades, but a very tough grader. almost never gives out 100% on assignments
Dr. Angel is th MVP, she calls us her "lovely students" and always asks about our day. Hardly spent any time working for this course outside of lectures. No exams, quizzes were fine, and the only other assignments were posting comments on lectures, making visual study guides, and occasional quizzes. Labs based on completion.
Her grading style is horrible. She will always find something wrong
2200 Anthropology is a very easy class just do most of the work and it is mostly participation except for the quizzes. If you can do decent on the quizzes then you will be fine. She is a good professor
This class was pretty easy and enjoyable. The only grades are for the weekly culture "stories" that are easy to do well on and an open note midterm and final. It's mostly just lecturing but I found the subject matter interesting and Dr. Angel to be an engaging lecturer. There is technically a textbook for this course but you do not need to buy it.
Our TA was a tough grader, and the visual study guides account for too much of our grade for what they were, but overall an incredible class. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but I still went to every lecture because I enjoyed Dr. Angel. She's delightful and obviously passionate about teaching. Other than the visual study guides, a pretty easy class.
Dr. Angel was a great professor! Her lectures were very engaging, largely because her passion for the material really came through and created a welcoming, accessible classroom environment. The assignments for this class are relatively straightforward with clear expectations and are quick to complete. Be prepared to think outside the box on exams.
Don't take any of her classes to just fill a credit. She came off rude and uncaring. May the the lord have mercy on you if you show up to the class 5 mins late, send an email asking a question or you utilize her "office hours" to get some help with her class.
Don't take this class lightly - the professor has a very strict attendance policy and can come across as unhelpful at times. However, the material is manageable with the textbook and using study tools like unstuck AI for practice.
